By Andrea FERRERA NAMBUCCA artists listen up, the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery is calling for expressions of interest from local artists to take part in the opening year of exhibitions at Coffs Harbour’s new Cultural and Civic Space.

“The Gallery serves the whole region, and we would love to encourage Nambucca artists to feel that they are part of the creative community by submitting their works,” Cath Fogarty, Gallery & Museum Coordinator, told News Of The Area.

“We don’t have any set parameters of what an exhibition will look like; we want people to think outside the box, not just paintings on walls but sculptures, ceramics, arts, craft and design,” Cath enthused.

“We want all kinds of local creatives to be part of this new era for the Gallery and the City showcasing the strong and vibrant creative community that exists here.

at the Coffs Harbour Health Campus and Port Macquarie Base Hospital clinics will be affected following the state government’s announcement of plans to redirect Pfizer doses from regional New South Wales to Sydney.

Up to 40,000 Pfizer doses from NSW Health’s rural and regional supply of Covid-19 vaccine will be redistributed to south west and western Sydney in a bid to help Year 12 students in the local government areas most affected by the current outbreak get back to school for face-to-face learning on August 16.

“The Pfizer doses will be sourced from supplies across rural and regional NSW to ensure no one area is impacted,” according to a statement from NSW Health, which notes that GP clinics will not be affected because they receive supplies from the federal rather than the state government.

The vaccination hubs at Coffs Harbour Health Campus and Port Macquarie Base Hospital, which administer the AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines, are the closest clinics to the Nambucca Valley receiving supplies from NSW Health.

Mid North Coast Local Health District Chief Executive Stewart Dowrick said it was unclear at this stage how these clinics will be affected by the planned redirection of vaccines to the city.

"We are working closely with NSW Health to finalise details of how our local health district will assist with the redistribution of Pfizer vaccines," he said.

Nambucca Healthcare Centre, which administers vaccines through Nambucca Respiratory Clinic, has been advised that current supply levels of Pfizer doses will not be decreased but will also not be increased as soon as had been expected, according to Practice Manager Sheree Smith.

“Our advice indicates that our supply will remain consistent, which is very important given the doses of this vaccine are only three to four weeks apart (AstraZeneca is 12 weeks apart).

“If our supply were to drop we would not be able to provide second doses at the appropriate time,” she said.

“We have been advised that our supply will not be increased given the situation occurring in other areas, as was originally expected.

“This will mean that we will not be able to increase

availability and therefore speed up the vaccination rate.

“It will be slow and steady.”

The clinic is currently providing an average of about 40 doses of Pfizer vaccine per day, in an alternating pattern of first doses for three weeks followed by second doses for three weeks.

“Demand is far beyond that of our supply, we are currently booked into October,” Smith said, adding that the clinic was prioritising aged care workers and doing mobile vaccination clinics in Bowraville “in order to ensure our most vulnerable communities have access to essential healthcare”.

The clinic has delivered more than 4,000 Covid-19 vaccinations to date and Smith said it has been hard to manage expectations given the changing advice from officials.

“Our staff are working very hard to deliver these essential services in a very difficult environment, and we ask that people treat them with respect and patience.

“We are doing our very best with the resources and information made available to us,” she said.

Star Street Medical Centre in Macksville is administering about 60 Pfizer vaccines three days

per week, according to Practice Manager Vicky Coombes, who said appointments are still available but that the clinic was only offering them to its own patients and frontline workers at this time.

Coombes said she’d been advised that GP clinics already providing Pfizer vaccinations wouldn’t be affected by the redistribution of doses but that there may be delays to additional clinics offering them in regional areas.

Other GP clinics close to the Nambucca Valley offering Pfizer vaccines include Urunga Medical Centre and the North Bellingen Medical Centre.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation recommends people aged 18 and above in greater Sydney “strongly consider getting vaccinated with any available vaccine”, including AstraZeneca, however Pfizer remains the preferred vaccine for people in regional areas aged 16 to under 60.

For people under 40, only those in priority groups are currently eligible for the Pfizer vaccine.

When asked what she loves about writing, Annie stated, “I love telling stories that enable readers to visit places they may never see, this gives me great satisfaction as does writing about the importance of family and friendship.”

Her talents are widespread and not just centred on writing alone.

Annie has mastered the

art of editing, formatting, selfpublishing, marketing and cover design.

With so much experience and expertise behind her, Annie is a key player in supporting aspiring authors on their writing journey as she enparts her wisdom to those willing to learn.

Annie said, “Meeting and forming friendships with other talented local authors is a wonderful part of living and writing in the Nambucca Valley.

“We have so much talent here!”

Her most recent novel, ‘Osprey Reef’ is due for release November 2021 and can be found in bookstores throughout Australia.

By Rachel MCGREGORALLEN NAMBUCCA Heads High School participated in The Kids Cancer Project, Write A Book In A Day on Tuesday 3 August.

The Write A Book In A Day competition is held annually and is open to students in years 5 through 12, there is also an adult writing group category.

The competition began in 2002, with 18 teams participating from across the country.

By 2019 there were 1132 teams participating which raised $475,000, and then in 2020 a record $537,000 was raised for childhood cancer research.

Each team can have up to ten members and once they start writing, have 12 hours to write and illustrate a book from start to finish.

News Of The Area spoke to teacher Sally Richardson about the competition on the morning of writing.

“The students are all sitting around the table, working collaboratively online on a Google document,” she said.

“This has to be uploaded by 6pm tonight.

“There are 7 students participating in total.”

their ideas for what to write?

“There are unique parameters set for the story that have to be met,” Ms Richardson explained.

Nambucca Heads High School has taken part in the competition for two years, and Ms Richardson is looking forward to running it again next year.

“It is such a great activity for the students to be involved in.

“They are all so enthusiastic at the moment, working on their individual chapters that will be put together later today and made into a book.

“Students sat down this morning and planned out the book chapter by chapter.

“They worked out the plot line of the narrative, what the big issues will be.

“It is great Project Based Learning.

“The students feel really empowered in their learning, and their ideas can flow.”

News Of The Area asked Ms Richardson how she gathered the group of writers.

“I called for students who were interested, and also approached some students to see if they wanted to take part.

“We gathered enough students for one team, and it would be great to have more teams next year.”

By Rachel MCGREGOR-ALLEN FORMER Bowraville Central school student Deputy Chief Magistrate Jane Mottley AM has been appointed Senior Judge of the NSW Drug Court.

Her new role will begin on 9 August.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Mottley attended Bowraville Central from K-10.

Attorney General Mark Speakman said that Mottely will be bringing more than 30 years of legal experience to the Drug Court bench.

“Deputy Chief Magistrate Mottley is the ideal candidate to take the work of the Drug Court forward.

“She brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to the role, including as an acting District Court judge and as judge of the Drug Court.

“Her Honour’s warmth, insight and intelligence will be invaluable to an area of the justice system which has a proven record of turning lives around.”

Deputy Chief Magistrate Mottley has a long history in the law courts, admitted as a solicitor in 1989.

She became a magistrate in 2000, and has sat in the Children’s Court, Local Courts before becoming appointed Deputy Chief Magistrate in 2009.

Mottley has been acting judge at the District Court since 2017, white presiding as a judge of the Drug Court.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Mottley is replacing Judge Dive as Senior Judge of the NSW Drug Court.

She said, “Judge Dive has been the father of the Drug Court and it’s an honour to be able to continue his work.

“I hope I can achieve as much as him in the time that I lead the court.”

New research, which follows offenders for an average period of 13.5 years, has found that treating drug offenders was more effective than sending them to prison.

The NSW Drug Court sits at Sydney, Parramatta and Toronto, with a new Drug Court being established in Dubbo.

The Drug Court is proven to drive down crime and be more cost effective than prison.

The Deputy Chief Magistrate said that, “The Drug Court is genuinely a multiagency partnership, involved not only in the administration of justice, but in delivering health and living outcomes that are not usually addressed through the normal processes of the justice system.”

Bread Tag Collection Point!

EARTHBOUND Bowra Cafe is proud to share with the community their participation in the Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs initiative.

Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs started a national collection network across Australia in late 2018.

It is a registered charity.

Beginning in South Africa in 2006, Bread Tags for Wheelchairs was started by retiring nurse Mary Honeybun.

Ms Honeybun used her passion for the environment and knowledge that the majority of people who needed wheelchairs in South Africa were unable to afford them to launch Bread Tags for Wheelchairs.

Transmutation donates money to Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs for bread tags received.

This money then goes toward purchasing basic wheelchairs for those in need in South Africa.

Owing to the large number of recycling and donations Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs have received they are also working with Wheelchairs for Kids in W.A. This charity donates wheelchairs to children in 90 overseas locations.

The Aussie Bread Tags donation tub is located just inside the entry door at Earthbound Bowra Cafe.

The owners and staff invite anyone who has bread tags lying around to drop off their bread tags.

Bread tags are a waste product that have long driven the owners crazy, and they are glad to help out a charity that is providing wheelchairs to those that cannot afford them.

2. On 23/7/21 at about 10:30pm Police issued a Court Attendance Notice to a 65-year-old woman following a family dispute in which a 60-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted.

The accused woman is to appear before Macksville Local Court on 2/12/21.

3. On 6/7/21 at about 1:26pm Police stopped a vehicle in Mann St, Nambucca Heads for random testing.

The 45-year-old female driver was arrested after she returned a positive oral fluid test.

The accused woman was charged at Macksville Police Station with a number of drug and traffic related offences and is to appear before Macksville Local Court on 5/8/21.

4. On 29/7/21 at about 11:05am Police arrested a 40-year-old man outside Macksville Police Station for breaching an AVO. The accused man was charged and later released on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 5/8/21.

Australians with South African connections got wind of the program, and began to spread the word, sending bread tags to South Africa.

Ms Cooper, a South African living in Australia, then set up a Facebook page and received an amazing response.

A local recycler in South Australia, Transmutation, was engaged in 2019 and there are now 500+ collection points across Australia which recycle over 250kg of bread tags every month.

32 tonnes of rubbish removed from Nambucca State Forest

OVER recent months, Forestry Corporation of NSW report to have removed over 32 tonnes of illegally dumped rubbish from Nambucca and Newry State Forests.

Both of these areas have a history of persistent illegal dumping, with Nambucca in particular having a reputation as one of the worst on the coast.

Between recent wet periods and floods, Forestry Corporation has undertaken a comprehensive assessment and clean-up for the benefit of visitors and the local environment, said Forestry Corporation Partnerships Leader, Ryan Ellis.

“This year’s efforts removed more than 32 tonnes of household and construction

“A significant volume of this waste was retrieved from sensitive wetland areas and close to local waterways, including Deep Creek.

“The majority of this material consists of household furniture, with a significant amount of children’s toys including polyester clothes,

“At one location, parts of an old 303 rifle were also discovered and police were contacted to investigate.

“Building waste, including asbestos and rubble, was removed and safely transported to appropriate facilities at significant cost.”

The operation also removed an additional 69 tyres, a burnt boat, 10 car bodies and various car parts, crushed steel and goods, much of which is free to dispose of at the tip.

It has cost the people of NSW over $30,000 in clean-

up costs alone in local forests around Nambucca and Urunga.

Community groups and local volunteers regularly conduct informal clean-up efforts and are part of the solution to keep forest areas clean.

Events such as Clean up Australia Day in March also saw locals tackle the area.

However, Forestry Corporation decided a larger intervention was required in an effort to keep on top of the volume of material dumped, primarily in the Nambucca State Forest within three kilometres of the local tip.

“It was disappointing

to find new dump sites around the Nambucca Waste Management Facility appear within weeks of the clean up being completed,” Mr Ellis said.

Several suspects were identified during the cleanup, with information passed on to authorities.

Fines have already been issued, and both the Nambucca and Bellingen Councils have been assisting with follow up investigations.

Nambucca gets Australia's first Wikihouse

WIKIHOUSES are here, and Nambucca Heads has the first.

Australia’s first ever Wikihouse is almost ready for occupation, being erected on King Parrot Parade, Nambucca Heads by owner Peter Holden.

Graham Osborne, architect and founder of WikihouseAU, told News Of The Area, “Peter’s Wikihouse structure arrived flat-packed in a six-meter-long container.”

Like a kid with a new box of Lego, Peter rolled up his sleeves and two weeks later his two-storey, two-bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and utility/ bathroom, living, dining, study and garage, 150m2 home is almost ready for plumbing, electrics and interior design.

“The frame was finished on Monday and now he’s onto sheeting inside and out, a prelude to cladding the roof and walls over the next few days,” said Graham.

“It’s coming together pretty nicely,” Peter told News Of The Area.

“Over the last five years I've been hunting for a house system that was simple, minimal impact to the environment and could be constructed primarily by unskilled persons.

“The Wikihouse system fascinated me from the onset, so I decided to pursue the possibility of constructing one with the Wikihouse Australia chapter run by Graham and Sally Osborne in Qld. “The process so far

has been very positive and satisfying because the Wikihouse system provides almost instant gratification.

“In the morning you gather manageable size plywood pieces, slot them together, fill gaps with insulation, cover the gaps with opposing pieces and voila you have a major section of a bottom floor frame, for example.

“The only scary moments were lifting the second level frames and annex legs on either side of the house which required a high level of coordination between the work crew and the crane crew.

“My view of a Wikihouse is a precision work of mechanical art - I can't wait to see how mine performs.”

Peter’s Wikihouse is based on the traditional barn-style design with annexes plus a loft.

“In London they have specialised in tiny houses and granny flats; we’ve adapted those designs and then someone from Canada wanted a ski-lodge and we came up with a two-storey design which is what we’re using for the Australian market,” added Graham.

“It’s an incredibly strong structure.”

So, what exactly is a Wikihouse?

Conceived and founded in the UK, the Wikihouse is being developed by architects, designers, engineers, inventors, manufacturers and builders, collaborating to develop the best, simplest,

most sustainable, highperformance building technologies, which anyone can use and improve.

Inspired by the concept, in 2015 Graham and Sally Osborne created WikihouseAU, the Australian chapter of Wikihouse.cc.

Wikihouseau.com is a collaboration to advance small scale architect designed and engineered, flat-packed buildings in Australia and afar, to remote, island and difficult access sites.

Graham said, “The whole concept is to involve people who work together on a home and then go on to build their own with another group of people, and so on.

“Wikihouse is an open source project to reinvent the way we make homes.

“Our aim is for these technologies to become new industry standards; the ‘bricks and mortar’ of the digital age,” said Graham.

HSC exams delayed due to COVID THIS year’s Year 12 HSC exams have been postponed one week in response to the worsening COVID-19 situation in Sydney to allow students more time to prepare for their exams.

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) COVID-19 Response Committee announced the changes to the 2021 HSC timetable on 23 July.

In recognition of the evolving COVID-19 situation and in line with health advice, NESA will: ● Extend the hand in date for all major projects by

two weeks. (The hand-in date for Industrial Technology has been extended by four weeks) ● Reschedule Drama performance exams to run from 6 to 17 September ● The Music performance exam will continue as scheduled, running from 30 August to 10 September ● Reschedule the written exams to begin one week later on Tuesday 19 October, with HSC results out on 17 December.

“We know students want certainty about their exams, our priority is to limit disruption to HSC students,” Professor Shergold said.

Professor Shergold said NESA will outline a special illness and misadventure process and any other contingency arrangements needed to ensure equity and fairness for all students.

NESA CEO Paul Martin said the priority for NESA and the school sectors is providing considered advice to students that aligns with the health advice and is fair to the whole cohort.

“The changes to the exam timetables mean all students have some additional time to prepare for exams or

complete their project,” Mr Martin said.

“We learnt a lot about our processes in the HSC last year and I am confident that we can apply those lessons this year.”

Oral language exams have also been rescheduled to start on 14 August.

Improving fitness outcomes for Nambucca Valley youth

KANE Gois and his team at Connective Fitness have established a gym in Macksville’s industrial estate with the aim of offering improved health and fitness outcomes for the local community.

At the gym, which opened last weekend, Kane has aspirations to work closely with the youth of the Valley to reach their fitness goals.

“We’ve got a couple classes that are targeted specifically

for the youth.

“One of the classes I’ve got is a class that’s targeted for younger kids from ages 6-12,” said Kane.

“The goal of those classes is to introduce exercises so that those younger kids can start getting into classes.”

Kane believes that introducing children to classbased fitness, allows them to easily introduce exercise into their daily lives.

“I’ve also got classes for teenagers that I do on Wednesdays.

“So if you’re over 13 and

want to work on building sport performance training, it's all about helping target training towards their specific sports they might be playing.

“If they don’t play any sports, and they’re looking to just get fit and healthy, we want it to become part of their lifestyle. “It’s all about building the benefits into their training and seeing the benefit of that training without making it hard.

“It’s about making it fun.”

Connective Fitness is located in Macksville’s industrial estate at 27b Binalong Way. The gym is open from 4am to 8:30pm on weekdays and 6am to 2pm on Saturdays.

THE theme for Homelessness Week 2021 is ‘Everybody needs a home’.

News Of The Area spoke with Stephanie Souris from Momentum Youth Housing.

Ms Souris confirmed that Momentum, “Receive referrals on a regular basis and we can also have drop-ins at the Nambucca Youthie who are seeking housing support.”

Momentum, which is delivered by Blue Sky Community Services, assists homeless youth in the 17-25 year old age bracket.

They provide early intervention with the aim to prevent family break up and youth homelessness.

Ms Souris told News Of

The Area, “One of the main reasons that young people become homeless is due to Domestic and Family Violence and family breakdown.”

Other reasons include new family arrangements, mental health issues, alcohol and other drugs which “within the family unit can make it difficult for young people to remain at home”.

At times a young person may be evicted from their first tenancy because they were not aware of their rights and responsibilities.

When asked how hard it was for homeless youth in Nambucca Valley to find stable living accomodation Ms Souris said, “Young people who are homeless in the Nambucca Valley find it very difficult to find stable

accommodation due to a lack of available and affordable properties, having no rental history, sometimes with a limited level of education and low employability skills.”

There is some good news from Ms Souris.

“There are also less real estate agents in this area so it can be a bit easier to build rapport and possibly be given an opportunity to be put forward for consideration to the landlord.”

News Of The Area spoke with Cassandra Collett, property manager at McGrath Estate Agents in Nambucca Heads, about the current trend in terms of rental availability.

Ms Collett said, “There is limited housing availability and affordability in the

current market.

“There are not a lot of affordable houses, everyone one wants to stay where they are.”

This is due to the insecurity presented by COVID, and the more affordable prices in the Valley compared to bigger regional centres like Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie.

For young people that have left home, Ms Collett said, “They are applying against people who are coming from metro areas that have a long history and more money.”

Ms Souris concurs with this view, “It is still difficult to secure a tenancy due to the amount of competition for rentals, and they are up against people who may be working full time or have good rental histories.”

At the time of speaking, McGrath has zero vacancies in the rental market, with only three properties leased over the past month.

Ms Collett provided tips for youth who may be applying for their first rental, these are listed at the end of the article.

News Of The Area asked Ms Souris if there was anything that the community members could do, where possible, to assist homeless youth.

“A spare room they are willing to rent out.

“This could be managed through a real estate agency or a private arrangement such as flatmates.com “People with investment properties or holiday homes may be willing to provide short-term leases.”

DEAR Jasminda,

Superfund exercises discretion against member’s wishes DAVID has been living with his de facto wife for 10 years.

He has two daughters to a previous relationship and his partner has three daughters of her own.

As part of his estate planning, David executes a non-binding death benefit nomination, leaving the whole of his superannuation to his two daughters equally.

When David unexpectedly passes away, the superfund writes to all of the parties, informing them that because the nomination was “non-binding”, the fund will decide on how the superannuation is to be divided and asks them to provide information and identification in support of their position.

The superfund identifies David’s partner, his youngest daughter and the youngest stepdaughter as being financially dependent upon him at the date of his death and although the fund acknowledges that the eldest daughter and the other stepdaughters have standing to make a claim, decides that because they were not financially dependent on David at the date of his death, they had no expectation to receive any provision from his superannuation.

Despite the fact that David recorded his wishes to the effect that his two children were to receive his super, the fund decides to pay 65% of the superannuation to the de facto spouse, 25% to the youngest daughter and only 10% to the eldest daughter.

David’s eldest daughter refers the superfund’s decision to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) and statements and submissions are filed by all concerned.

A year after David’s death, AFCA affirms the superfund’s decision, accepting that the 10% “token” payment was fair and reasonable in the circumstances.

It is important to record your wishes in a “binding” nomination and that you review your nomination regularly.

There are many reasons why people face homelessness – for some it’s family breakdown, domestic and family violence, job loss or financial pressures, while others have fallen through the cracks of our mental health system.

At Mission Australia, we hear the cries for help on the frontline. Many of our services are at capacity, with social housing waitlists ballooning.

There simply aren’t enough safe, secure homes to house people.

That shouldn’t be the case in a nation like

We anticipate August’s 2021 Census will show an increase in homelessness, yet our Federal Government still has no national plan to end homelessness in Australia.

I encourage everyone to join me and the thousands of others who are calling on political leaders near and far to make the changes needed to end homelessness.

There was a distinct lack of leadership in the Federal Budget – we need to do better.

Library Concerns

I HAVE been following the issue of the enlargement of the Nambucca Library and along with others have voiced my concerns about this development.

It is not because I do not value the library, far from it.

However I value the communities right to the large space in the small hall which will be lost.

There are no other halls belonging to the community in Nambucca Heads.

Sharing this space with the library will not provide the same venue and access we have now.

Many groups have held meetings and exhibitions in the hall and so much of that space and access will be lost.

Where do they go?

The access to the Entertainment Centre will be adversely affected.

I have been part of shows in the “big hall” and helped unload the frail aged when they could park safely in the courtyard.

Orchestras visiting from other areas also can unload players and instruments safely also in the courtyard.

Just imagine trying to do that on the race track in front of the halls and library, dangerous and unnecessary.

The Bowraville Theatre has been given a grant to provide disabled access.

We already have that and will lose it.

I understand the need to provide a larger library for our town.

IT is overwhelming, isn't it.

Day in, day out.

Waiting for 11am, which used to be reserved for morning tea and perhaps a piece of cake but is now the hour when we wait for the pressers and the politicians to announce the latest set of figures.

It can feel quite relentless, so instead of my usual cynicism and devil-may-care attitude, I've decided to offer the advice I'm trying to stick to, which has been gleaned from a range of different sources.

1. Limit the amount of time you listen to the news.

This may seem a weird thing to recommend from a column in a newspaper, but really, you can absorb all the Coronavirus news you require in a very short time span.

Just allocate 10-15 minutes a day instead of dipping into news feeds every waking moment.

There's very little good news around in the headlines and it can become quite depressing.

2. Try to find one thing you enjoy and devote an hour a day to it.

It may be playing a board game with your kids (if anyone finds that enjoyable) or gardening or going for a walk along the beach or drawing or listening to your favourite music.

It's important to have something to look forward to.

3. There are a lot of polarising views at the moment on social media, so I'd suggest removing yourself from conversations or threads that are just going to upset you.

There will be countless perspectives and ideologies floating around and if someone has a very firm view, there's not a whole lot of point trying to change it.

It is better to perhaps unfollow anyone who is making you clench your teeth so tightly that you are discovering your jawline again.

4. Try a book. Books don't argue back.

Books don't have a comments section.

Books can take you into an alternate world and give you a chance to inhabit a different experience.

If reading isn't your thing, maybe try a podcast.

There are some incredibly inspiring people around and listening to them can help your own frame of mind.

However, ruining two venues to enlarge one is bad town planning.

Due to the lack of space and difficulty in enlarging the library it may prove a better plan to move it altogether to a more suitable venue.

The existing library could be used for a learning centre of arts and crafts or other needs the community might suggest.

It seems good money after bad is being thrown around trying to enlarge the existing library.

The Courtyard space could certainly be beautified and there are enough artists and clever people around to make it a lovely open area in town, whilst also allowing for a space for unloading and picking up.

The local Aboriginal people have painted some great works, one of note being on the side of the old Tourist Centre building.

They may be interested in doing some lovely artwork.

Macksville Country Club Golf and Bowls

GREAT weather for a big weekend at the country club.

Golf saw the biggest field we've had in years for the Paul Hapgood sponsored Ambrose event.

Murray Spear, Mick Manning and Dale Bunton won with a net 53.1 from Kaz Perry, Daniel Traymor and Allan Clarke. Being a fun event it was good to see a lot of social golfers turnout for a game .

Hunt and Brownlie Win The Pairs

THE warmer weather has started to see some bowlers come out of hibernation and back onto the greens.

If numbers continue to grow, the old grass green may soon be packed with bowlers setting up vans and tents waiting for a game of bowls.

Wednesday 28 July attracted 34 players and would’ve been more if some players decided to stick to bowls than fishing misadventures, but we won’t mention anyone Pushbike Paul, Bob Ramjet Sutton and The Good Brother Graham Hunt.

The winners of the day were Ray Long, John Richardson and Danny Curran.

Second place went to Stuart Thorn, Glen Brady and Mick The Mad Rooster Boyle.

Third Place was won by a pairs game of Dennis The Menace Graham and Bill Mangroves Coughlan, which means another $10 donated to the new green.

The lucky losers were Stan Flack, Cec Smith and Bruce Mason.

The lucky bowler was Don Dollar Lean, who couldn’t win the $210 jackpot, which is unusual for Don.

Friday 30 July attracted 62 bowlers, which is only two bowlers off the maximum, as we currently only have one green. Friday was sponsored

by Laverty’s Funeral Directors and thanks to them, it meant double prizes.

Most teams won a prize, and those that didn’t quickly fired in a protest.

The first winning team of the day was Wayne Bolton, Shaun Smith, Ken Summerville and Tony Mirror Man Urquhart. The other team to claim first prize was Terry Harvey, David Moore, Terry Snowden and Fred Glasson.

The second place winners were John McCollom, Bob Ramjet Sutton, Dave The Beast Ogilvy and Grant Lawrence. The team of Stan Flack, Bill Mangroves Coughlan and Danny Curran also collected a second place.

Third place prizes went to Chris D’elboux, Gary Tierney, Mick Targett and Mick Audsley.

The second third place prize winner was the team of Don Lean, Paul Holden, Alan Cosgrave and Bruce Mason.

The lucky losers prizes were won by Jack Young, Tommy Turbo Reynolds, John Stewart and Tony Stokes.

Also collecting a lucky

losers prize was the team of Bill Miernik, Ian Take Grass Blain, Billy Blackford and Lucky Laurie Summers.

The lucky bowler was Grant Lawrence who received the most cheers and applause ever heard at the bowling club. With the jackpot only being $120, Grant was advised by teammate Dave Ogilvy that it wasn’t worth

winning and to let it jackpot to next week, which is exactly what he did.

Saturday 31 July saw the highly anticipated major pairs final between Ken Summerville and John Reynolds against Graham Hunt and Chris Brownlie.

Graham and Chris came into the final as the bookmakers favourites, even

though Ken and Johnny had been the giant killers of the tournament.

After losing the first end, Graham and Chris skipped out to an early lead of 10-2.

Ken and Johnny weren’t going to let their opposition have everything their own way, and through good bowls and determination got the score back to 14 - 12, and

were well within striking distance just after half time.

Graham and Chris quickly strung a few ends together and the margin soon became 10.

Ken and Johnny tried hard and played good bowls, but the class and experience of Graham and Chris saw them run out winners 31 - 13.

The final score was not a true indication of the closeness of the match and congratulations must go to all four players.

A reminder to all bowlers that Wednesday is club selected triples starting at 1pm, Friday is nominated Fours / Triples starting at 1pm and starting this Saturday August 7 is the first round of the minor singles.

This week's play of the week went to an incident away from bowls that involved three of the club's bowlers.

Two of the club's bowlers decided since they can’t bowl, they might as well go fishing with one of the pairs' champions.

Lucky for these 2 bowlers, Graham the good brother Hunt was there once again to save the day.

I suggest Bob Rex Hunt Sutton and Paul Pushbike Michel stick to playing bowls.

CONTRACT SERVICE – BOULTON’S CROSSING (GUMMA RESERVE) The Nambucca Valley Council is seeking suitably qualified contractors to provide a quote for contract services being for; fee collection, rubbish removal and cleaning of amenities on a daily basis at Boulton’s Crossing, also known as Gumma Reserve primitive campground.

Council is seeking a set hourly rate to provide the contract service 7 days per week, 365 days per year for a consistent regular time period between the hours of 3.00pm–6.00pm daily or, times arranged by contract.

Say this stop-motion sci-fi comedy’s title quickly enough and you’ll hear the adorable hidden meaning behind Wes Anderson’s canine caper, “I love dogs”. The stylish and surprisingly political affair follows 12-yearold Atari (voice of Koyu Rankin) and his dog Spots (Liev Schreiber), who have been separated after a public health order in the fictional city of Megasaki amid an outbreak of dog flu saw the mayor deport all dogs to an island of landfill. The bizarre setting quickly gives way to a heartfelt tale as Atari teams up with five exiled pups (Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Jeff Goldblum, Bob Balaban and Bill Murray) to scour the island for his best friend.

Twenty-two seasons in and the Midsomer Murders team still have no shortage of creative ways to off the residents of Causton and its surrounds.

The series’ sinister slayings have taken a turn for the bizarre since leaving Caroline Graham’s series of books behind, with weapons including a massive wheel of cheese, flying wine bottles, a tumble dryer and even porridge.

Tonight’s offering includes a grisly discovery at the Midsomer Scarecrow Festival in the village of Little Upton, when bodies begin appearing on poles alongside locals’ straw creations. Unperturbed, DCI John (Neil Dudgeon, right) Barnaby and DS Jamie Winter (Nick Hendrix) are on the case.

By David WIGLEY THE youthful experience of Max Hicks was enough to overcome his older opponent in the match of the round at Nambucca Squash Club last week.

Max has been playing competitive squash at Nambucca Squash Club for over three years and was introduced to the game by his father Rod Hicks who plays in line one.

Club President Bruce Graham said the earlier you start playing the better.

“The earlier you start playing the better, we all know how hard it is to keep pace with the enthusiasm of a dedicated junior coming up through the ranks.

“Max Hicks is a young player on the rise, he is a different player to the one who turned up three years ago, he is smooth around the court and absolutely knows how to put away a winning shot.

“He is very aware of the tactics needed to out-manoeuvre his opponent, although squash requires physicality, having the skill to put the ball in the corners and read your opponent is really important.

“Michael Manning has improved a lot and is on the way upwards, he’s been playing socially for about a year and prior to this has never placed a foot on a squash court.

“His improvement has been enormous and he now plays a more measured game of squash, line three is a very tight line with small margins between all of the players,” said Bruce.
