IN JULY 1946 the Nambucca Heads RSL Women’s Auxiliary held its first meeting and was mostly made up of wives and relatives of those who had served in the first World War. Fast forward to 2022 and the Auxiliary, one of the district's oldest not-for-profit organisations, is still in existence but unless they get some new members their future is not certain.

Over the years the Nambucca Heads RSL Women’s Auxiliary has raised money for the RSL sub-Branch to provide assistance for veterans when needed, particularly when urgent and immediate help is required.

Over the last 76 years other areas of the community, including the aged care sector, have benefited from funds raised by the Auxiliary.

New hotline to fast-track power reconnection for northern NSW flood victims MASTER Electricians Australia (MEA) has launched a free hotline to connect home owners affected by flooding with local electricians, in order to get the power turned back on as soon as possible.

MEA CEO Malcolm Richards said the service would help flooded residents find electricians faster so they could get their power checked and turned back on as soon as possible.

“If the power to the home has been cut off due to inundation, home owners will need to have the electrical fittings checked and declared safe before the home can be reconnected,” Mr Richards said.

“If the power to your street has been restored you should call the Master Electricians Australia hotline - 1300 889 198 – and we will help you find a contractor to get you back on the grid.

“In many cases it will be

a simple matter of testing that everything is safe. In some cases, work will be required to replace damaged fittings or disconnect them.

“Either way, it will require a licensed electrician and the fastest way to get one will be to call the hotline.”

Mr Richards also invited electrical contractors in floodaffected areas to register with the Master Electricians Australia hotline, so they could be connected to homeowners in need.

“You don’t need to be a Master Electricians Australia member – this is a service we are providing for free to the community in order to get everyone up and running as soon as possible.

“So I urge all licensed contractors in the area to call the hotline and let us know that they’re available to help.”

While MEA was not charging for the referral service, homeowners would be required to pay the electricians for performing the checks and any necessary repairs.

Mr Richards said Essential Energy was offering a rebate to homeowners of up to $350 to cover

the cost of having an appropriate contractor reconnect the electricity.

Winners of the Youth Lions Quest announced

FOR 49 years the Lions’ Youth of the Year Quest has been running throughout Lions Clubs Australia-wide.

This year was no

different, and three local students entered in the quest locally, from Nambucca Heads High School and the Christian Community School.

Seminars were held in late November 2021 to inform the interested students about the Quest.

Hayden Bailey, Lystan Scott and Rohan Shelton firstly attended a 40 minute

interview and then answered two impromptu questions.

They had two minutes to answer each question.

The questions were: 1.There is no place like home - please discuss.

2. Integrity and honesty should be required of our politicians - please comment.

Each entrant was required to then present a

five-minute prepared speech at a public speaking evening on 22 February.

Mr Grahame Beatton from the Nambucca Heads Lions Club said, “The quest focuses on recognising and developing leadership in young people aged 15 to 19 years of age.

achievements as well as skills in leadership, sportsmanship, public speaking and community involvement.”

On 22 February, Hayden Bailey was awarded the overall winner, with Lystan Scott winning the award for best public speaker.

“The value of the Quest in developing and recognising important skills in these young leaders is widely recognised and will hold the participants in good stead in their future endeavours,” said Mr Beatton.

Rohan Shelton will represent the Nambucca Heads Lions Club at the next level of the quest, owing to Hayden being unavailable to attend.

The Nambucca Heads Lions Club acknowledged the great support given to the students by their schools and teachers when they were preparing and participating in the Quest.

Boaters urged to avoid North Coast waterways until conditions subside

MINISTER for Transport and Veterans David Elliott is urging boaters on the North Coast to stay off waterways until dangerous conditions and extreme weather subside.

“As the severe weather moves into northern NSW, we implore boaters on the Mid and Far North Coast to stay off waterways with moderate to major flooding impacting the region,” Mr Elliott said.

“Submerged debris, strong currents, wild weather, strong winds and big seas are causing treacherous conditions along the coast, while the extreme weather is expected to travel further south to the Mid North Coast.

“Heavy rain is expected to continue and waterways are saturated, with the risk of life-threatening flooding and hazardous submerged debris making boating unsafe.

“We urge boaters to stay off waterways in hazardous conditions because doing so places yourself, your passengers and anyone who attempts to rescue you in the event of misadventure, in danger.

“The significant amount of debris floating

downstream is a major threat, as is the likelihood the extreme conditions could have obscured or moved navigation markers to guide skippers around hazards.”

Mark Hutchings, Executive Director NSW Maritime, encouraged boaters to monitor weather conditions, look out for each other, wear a lifejacket at all times and only take to the water when it was safe to do so.

“Skippers must check weather forecasts and only head out on the waterways when the dangerous conditions subside,” Mr Hutchings said.

“In particular, crossing a coastal bar, heading offshore and rock fishing should be avoided.”

Currently across the North Coast flood zone: ● Dangerous conditions and flooding are being experienced from the Hastings to Tweed rivers. ● The main area of concern is centred around the Lismore, Tweed and Clarence areas with evacuations taking place.

THE NSW Government’s $155 million program for Before and After School Care (BASC) vouchers is now live for parents and carers of children enrolled in a NSW primary school.

The $500 vouchers are available now to use at participating providers to assist families

with access to BASC services by covering a parent gap fee component of their session fees.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the $500 vouchers are more important than ever in supporting our working families as they get back into the office.

● The main rivers affected include the Tweed, Richmond, Brunswick, Clarence, Bellinger, Nambucca, Macleay and Hastings rivers.

Transport for NSW Boating Safety Officers are continuing to assess damage to infrastructure, take note of hazards and reinstate navigation aids, but it will take some time until the process is completed.

Every skipper is responsible for the safety of their vessel and everyone onboard.

As severe weather continues to move down the coast of NSW, we remind boaters across the state to: ● Ensure your boat and equipment are suitable for the conditions. ● Log on/off with Marine Rescue NSW via marine radio, phone or mobile app. ● Ensure that you and everyone onboard your vessel is wearing a lifejacket at all times, even if conditions are calm. ● Ensure your vessel’s mooring is secure because of the potential for strong winds.

NAMBUCCA VALLEY COUNCIL DRAFT LOCAL APPROVALS POLICY DE 04 Nambucca Valley Council has resolved to exhibit amendments to Councils Local Approvals Policy. The proposed amendments include the following matters relating to exemptions from needing to obtain approval from Council for certain activities under section 68 of the Local Government Act 1993: • The provision of an additional year (two years already provided) for people who have been displaced as a result of a natural disaster to live in a movable dwelling on land without approval subject to provisions which ensure the occupants are safe, that effluent is appropriately managed and that details demonstrating the rebuild process has been substantially commenced and is on track for completion at the expiry of the extended period.

• Removing the need for an approval to install a solid fuel heater on land within the RU1, RU2, RU3, R5, E2, E3, or E4 zones under the Nambucca Local Environmental Plan 2010 (LEP).

• Removing the need for an approval for an A-frame sign subject to compliance with to provisions relating to number, location, maintenance and liability.

• The provision of exemptions for mobile food vending vehicles to stop for longer than 15 minutes if they have obtained a licence from Council under the Roads Act 1993 or who are operating at a market or event that is permitted without consent under the LEP. A further exemption has been added for vendors who hold a current approval from another Local Government Area.

• Clarification on stormwater exemptions.

• A clarifying provision which makes clear that as part of an application to operate a caravan park or manufactured home estate, Council will be assessing the compliance of all dwellings

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FOR FUNDING ASSISTANCE FOR HOUSE RAISING Council is seeking expressions of interest from property owners in flood liable areas who wish to receive funding assistance to lift the residential floors of their houses to the estimated 1 in 100 year flood frequency level plus a 500mm freeboard.

The NSW Government’s Flood Management Program will provide funding at a ratio of up to 2:1 for projects with a value of up to $80,000 meaning a maximum grant of $53,333 ex GST. Nambucca Valley Council will support projects by donating all local (not State) development application and construction certificate fees.

Voluntary house raising is an effective flood mitigation strategy for existing houses in low flood hazard areas where other structural mitigation works to reduce flood risk are impractical or uneconomic.

Expressions of interest will be assessed in accordance with the NSW Government’s Guidelines for Voluntary House Raising Schemes and Council’s Voluntary House Raising Policy. Eligible buildings have to be used for residential purposes (not commercial or industrial) and have been constructed prior to 1986. Weatherboard clad dwellings sitting on a bearers and joists (timber) floors are ideal candidates for the program.

“The vouchers will offer parents greater flexibility as they return to the office,” Mr Perrottet said.

“They’ll also ease pressure on household budgets as we recover from the disruptions of the pandemic.”

Treasurer Matt Kean said the NSW Government is focused on making it easier for women to enter, re-enter and stay in the workforce.

“Covid-19 was the first economic shock where women lost more jobs than men, and providing more affordable Before and After School Care services can give working mothers greater choice when it comes to their careers,” Mr Kean said.

Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said this is a great opportunity for families to access a BASC service in their local school community.

“Every family with children at a NSW primary school is eligible for one voucher per child, which will provide each child with approximately 60 sessions of free BASC,” Ms Mitchell said.

“These vouchers are all about providing affordable access to care for families, particularly after a tough two years where we have had disrupted access to school and BASC.” Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said the vouchers are now live on the Service NSW app.

“Similar to Dine & Discover, First Lap and other voucher programs, eligible parents and carers will be able to store and re-use their Proof of Identity documents, such as Medicare Card and Driver’s Licence, to speed up the application process,” Mr Dominello said.

Families can access the vouchers online via MyServiceNSW account, in the app, or by visiting their nearest Service Centre.

Wendy Mills, CEO of the Nambucca Heads RSL told News Of The Area, “The club has always been there for its community, including providing shelter and support for victims of the 2019-20

bushfires.

“In applying for the grant, the Board and Management wanted to ensure that they have the necessary infrastructure required for their community in times of need moving into the future.

“Following the devastating bushfires in 2019/20 and COVID-19 from February 2020, the RSL has been focused on how to best respond to these emergencies and what is required to

change within the resources of the Club as well as the built environment to meet these challenges,” said Wendy.

The key elements, with associated benefits of the project include the following: 1: Remove and realign the existing roof line to overcome leaking from the box gutters.

This will create a new roof with a lifespan of over 20 years and will involve installing new roof trusses, insulation and new roofing sheets, 2: Remove and replace air conditioning units with new energy efficiency units for the comfort of evacuees; and establish a plant room to protect these air-conditioning units.

3: Remove ceiling components and replace water damaged areas.

4: Install solar panels on the new roof.

5: Replace the old hot water furnace with more energy efficient systems.

The key activities funded by the grant will include the following.

“We will engage a hydraulic engineer to assess water flows, roof realignment and gutters and downpipe sizes to work in conjunction with an architect to realign the roof line for optimal solar and water flow.

“A structural engineer will be appointed to work with the architect and

Completed drawings, approved by the Board will be lodged to the DA to reflect changes in the roof line.

The scope of works will be refined, tenders will be prepared for a roofing contractor, solar installer, builder and air conditioning company and then go out to tender, assessment and finally, appointment.

Additionally, the old hot water service will be removed, and a new energy-

efficient hot water system will be installed.

“Nambucca RSL Club would like to thank Pat Conaghan, MP for his support as well as the Federal Government for their support of bushfire affected communities,” said Wendy.

“The application was a team effort, with the vision of the Board and Management team in conjunction with C2Hills Consultancy, we have been able to develop a project that will enhance the facilities of the club that will further help our community in times of crisis.”

Leadership development for Nambucca Valley community champions UNDER the banner of ‘Regenerate Regional Leadership’ the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation is bringing a regional leadership development program to people in the Nambucca Valley.

Across eight days between May and August 2022, 24 people get the chance to think and act differently when it comes to practicing leadership and generating solutions to complex situations in their community.

The Australian Rural Leadership Foundation’s Chief Executive Matt Linnegar

said the program was an experience that offered networking, leadership skills and personal growth.

“Our regional leadership development programs bring a diverse group of people from within one region together, immersing them in challenges facing their region and helping them to discover their own strategies to find solutions,” he said.

The program is free of charge for participants thanks to joint funding from the Australian and NSW Governments under the Bushfire Local Economic

Recovery Fund.

It is also supported by GlobalGiving and Minderoo Foundation’s Fire and Flood Resilience Initiative.

“The Bushfire Economic Recovery Fund invests in projects that will support job retention and creation in bushfire impacted regions, strengthen community resilience and reduce the impact of future natural disasters,” Mr Linnegar said.

“This program is essentially an investment in people who are interested in creating opportunities for others and want to bring

quiet community champion who takes the reins when things get tough, or someone who wants to make progress on challenges in your community – this program is for you.

“It's about widening and strengthening your local network and creating connections outside of the region that enable you to grow your impact and find solutions to issues in your community.”

Mr Linnegar said the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation brought experience and connections like few organisations in the country.

“The Australian Rural Leadership Foundation has

people together to create a better future for their community.”

When it comes to participants, Mr Linnegar said there was no ideal candidate.

“Anyone can participate in this program – it's not just for people in positional leadership roles,” he said.

“If you are curious about experiencing challenges, you are a mover and shaker or a

Macksville Music Muster postponed

MACKSVILLE Music Muster has been postponed owing to flooding across the Macksville Showground.

News Of The Area got the message on Monday, 28 February, from Vanessa Sanger, Macksville Music Muster event founder and organiser.

“Well Folks,” began Vanessa.

“This isn’t an announcement I wanted to be making however…Mother Nature has not been very kind lately.

“So much devastation with the current floods.

“I can’t even get out of QLD yet and I’ve just received the news that Macksville Showgrounds is completely under water and will not be accessible for the Muster.

“We have made the decision to postpone the event until 1-7 November 2022.

“Devastating decision I know, but in the best interests of keeping everyone safe it had to be made,” she said.

Vanessa gave a call out to sponsors.

“You have two options: either transfer your sponsorship to the new dates or request a refund.

“Please be patient while

we all work through this together,” Vanessa urged.

The Macksville Music Muster was to have been held in early March.

In a sad but in-memoriam celebratory turn of life events, the Macksville Music Muster will ongoingly be held in honour of Glen Albrecht.

International singer songwriter to play Valla Public Hall

VALLA Public Hall will be opening on Saturday 5 March to provide locals with the opportunity to hear international singer and songwriter Emily Barker perform with multi-instrumentalist partner Lukas Drinkwater.

Emily’s folk/country music showcases her clear and expressive voice.

Event organiser Phill Nicholas said, “Lyrically it’s created in the singer-songwriter mould of storytelling, like Paul Kelly, while musically Emily’s influences, while rooted in Australian rock include English folk traditions and Americana.”

Mr Nicholas said, “I first started working with Emily in 2006.

“If you have ever watched the TV detective series Wallander, then you’ve heard Emily’s music, as her song ‘Nostalgia’ soundtracked the opening titles.”

Emily grew up in Bridgetown, WA, leaving Australia in the early 2000s to set up her base

in the UK where she has forged a career as an independent musician.

She has recorded over eight albums, and according to Mr Nicholas, Emily’s previous work includes “collaborations with musicians in Nashville, performing at the 2012 London Olympic Games Opening Ceremony and scoring film soundtracks”.

The show was originally scheduled for January, but had to be postponed due to COVID. Mr Nicholas said, “Emily and Lukas’ last shows in Australia were in early 2020 just before the pandemic put a halt to live music and touring for the most part of two years.

“Nothing brings people together like live music - it’s a great leveller and a way to rise above the ups and downs of our daily lives.”

Police On The Streets

ON 18/2/22 at about 8:30pm Police arrested a 36-year-old man in Way Way following a violent family dispute in which a 68-year-old man and 68-year-old woman were assaulted.

Both victims sustained serious injuries and were conveyed to Coffs Harbour Hospital for treatment.

Damage was also sustained to the victim’s home and vehicle.

The accused man was charged at Kempsey Police Station and bail refused to appear before a Justice at Port Macquarie Local Court on 19/2/22.

The accused was subsequently granted bail by the Court to appear before Kempsey Local Court on 28/2/22.

On 20/2/22 at about 11:10am Police arrested a 46-year-old man at a Bowraville address for breaching an AVO. The accused man was charged at Macksville Police Station and refused bail to appear before Kempsey Local Court on 21/2/22.

The accused man was convicted and fined $220 and sentenced with a 12 month Community Corrections Order.

On 18/2/22 about 11:07am Police were conducting stationary RBT on Giinagay Way, North Macksville when a vehicle that was directed to enter the site sped off and decamped into Bellevue Drive.

The male passenger of the vehicle was wanted for four outstanding warrants and fled the vehicle and attempted to evade Police by jumping into the Nambucca River.

The man swam across about half way before starting to struggle and come into difficulty.

A passing fisherman in a small tinnie assisted by ferrying two officers out to the man who was able to be pulled into the boat and arrested.

The fisherman then ferried the Officers and the accused onto the River St bank directly in front of the Macksville Police Station where Officers walked the accused into the station and the warrants were executed.

On 22/2/22 a Police charged a 68-year-old man at Nambucca Heads Police Station with Mid-Range PCA after he returned a breach analysis reading of 0.087.

The accused man was issued a court attendance notice to appear before Macksville Local Court on 17/3/22.

On 23/2/22 Police charged a 39-year-old woman at Macksville Police Station with breach of bail, drug possession and a traffic offence following a traffic stop in Macksville.

The accused woman was bail refused to appear before Macksville Local Court on 24/3/22.

OzGREEN seeding local resilience

RESILIENT Communities groups for Macksville, Scotts Head and Bowraville are up and running with facilitators in place.

Resilient Communities is a community-led program,

founded by OzGREEN, designed to empower local people to take action to mitigate climate change through building resilience and preparing for disasters.

inaugurated their first meeting with fellow volunteers from twelve locations across the North and Mid North Coasts, to learn the OzGREEN process that underpins the Resilient Communities program.

Preparing to run their own community sessions the group developed their own facilitation skills and reflected on the journey they had experienced through the training.

The format is an online session that introduces each topic followed by a community session where the focus is local challenges, local actions.

Dale told News Of The Area why she has put her hand up as a Facilitator for her local Macksville group.

“Volunteering as a Facilitator for OzGREEN’s Resilient Communities program is an exciting opportunity to work within a grassroots organisation, a positive and tangible action I can make in the context of

the climate emergency and challenges encountered by our community, which aligns with my permaculture ethics of earth care, people care, fair share and a practical expression of radical hope,” said Dale.

“I see some initial positive outcomes for our group; to meet as strangers who care, leave as friends who come together to share concerns and ideas on the topics of food, drought, bushfire, heatwave, flood, storm, infrastructure damage and health resilience in our community.

“Over the coming weeks our group will collaborate to brainstorm and empower individual and community visions and actions which will assist us personally and our communities to prevent, prepare, respond, recover or build resilience,” said Dale.

Comments from volunteers attending the Volunteer Community Facilitator Training summed up the

overall feeling.

“I am excited about what this circle will look like at the end of the program…what we will accomplish as a collective, and I as an individual.

“As one, we are going to have a big impact in this region.”

“This weekend has meant a lot in terms of knowing how many incredible people we are going to be working with.

“Feeling very inspired, and very very grateful, hopeful, invigorated and inspired.”

$2500 grants on offer to community groups ELECTRICITY distributor Essential Energy this week launched its annual Community Choices program, which supports local groups across its footprint by offering funds up to $2,500 for successful candidates.

This is the first year the annual Community Choices and Community Halls giving programs have been consolidated, with a total funding pool of $245,000.

With funding available in 20 zones across the network’s footprint incorporating rural, regional and remote New South Wales and parts of southern Queensland; the electricity distributor hopes to support as many as 300 registered charities, not-forprofit groups, community groups and community halls.

Community Relations Manager North Coast,

Raelene Myers, said, “From Monday 28 February, eligible groups such as charities, notfor-profit and community groups like CWAs, community halls, community centres, school P&Cs and sporting clubs can nominate to take part in the community-led voting for a share of the $245,000.

“Once verified, they can rally their supporters to take part in the public voting online for ten days from 8 April.

“The entire process can be completed online – from community groups and charities nominating to the community voting.

“It’s a great and COVIDsafe way to raise funds,” Raelene said.

“There are many groups across our footprint that are really in need of this

funding – which is why Essential Energy is asking the community to choose a cause that counts and nominate them,” Raelene said.

The Community Choices program includes $245,000 in funding across 20 zones in the network area, with funding packages ranging from $300 to $2,500 available depending on votes.

There are separate funding streams available for community halls and for groups located within small communities with populations of less than 10,000.

Nominees must be able to receive payments by electronic funds transfer (EFT) and provide photos and stories about their organisations and the work they do.

Laugh it Off Comedy Fundraiser

SO many businesses and industries have been badly affected by the COVID pandemic, with one of the worst hit being the entertainment industry.

The volunteer operated Bowraville Theatre was just getting back on its feet and began to reopen in mid 2021 when more restrictions forced the iconic building to close up its doors once again.

The bills kept coming and with no income from performances, things were starting to look grim.

Enter stage left Human Rabbit Entertainment who have thrown the Bowraville Theatre a lifeline by presenting

a side splitting night of standup comedy at the theatre to raise dollars that will help keep the theatre going as they shake off the pandemic.

With the very appropriate name of ‘Laugh it Off!’, Coffs Comedy and Human Rabbit Entertainment will deliver five hilarious Mid North Coast comics in a night of stand-up that promises to be as unique as it is entertaining.

It was Human Rabbit Entertainment who brought last year’s epic Koorie Comedy Showcase to Bowraville and this offering is rumored to be even better.

Laugh it Off will feature stand-up legends Uncle Rudy Surina, Dave Human, Ben Stevenson, Bruce Miller, Kelly

THE Premier’s Reading Challenge celebrates its 21st anniversary this year, with the challenge starting on Monday.

28 February and is open for student entries until Friday, 19 August.

MORE than 40,000 businesses across NSW will be supported to phase-out single-use plastics in line with the NSW Government’s recently announced Plastics Reduction and Circular Economy Act 2021.

Environment Minister James Griffin said the NSW Government is partnering with the National Retail Association to co-design and deliver a campaign to help businesses transition

away from single-use plastics.

“Almost every piece of plastic ever made is still with us.

“More than 2.7 billion plastic items end up in NSW waterways each year - wreaking havoc on the environment and endangering wildlife.

“To protect our environment, we’re getting rid of certain single-use plastics later this year and this campaign will help ensure NSW businesses are

ready to go,” Mr Griffin said.

Over the next nine months the National Retail Association will visit more than 650 retail precincts providing factsheets, signage, and advice to help businesses transition.

Alongside this, the National Retail Association has launched a free hotline 1800 844 946 to offer businesses, community organisations and consumers advice on the single-use plastic bans.

From 1 June 2022, the

supply of lightweight plastic shopping bags will cease, and come 1 November, the supply of single-use plastic cutlery, utensils, cotton buds and expanded polystyrene food containers will end.

This will also include products containing plastic microbeads and plastic plates and bowls.

Exemptions will apply to people who rely on plastic products for disability or health reasons.

“While we recognise a

number of large and small businesses have already phased-out single-use plastics, for many the ban will involve significant change and they’ll need government and community support,” Mr Griffin said.

BY popular demand, an additional 5,000 fee-free Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) courses are now up for grabs to help people get jobs in the hospitality industry.

Minister for Skills and Training Alister Henskens and Minister for Hospitality Kevin Anderson said thousands of people had taken up the opportunity to

gain the free qualification courtesy of NSW Government funding, since it rolled out three weeks ago.

“These RSA courses have been more popular than happy hour at your local pub or club, and now we’re shouting a second round to help thousands more people get jobs,” Mr Henskens said.

“Whether you are a school-leaver or looking for

a career change, now is the perfect time to gain your free qualification to enter the dynamic hospitality industry.”

The RSA courses are available through TAFE NSW and other registered training organisations, which will be delivered either online or face-to-face in less than a day.

People who have

previously worked in the industry are also being encouraged to return to the sector.

Anyone whose RSA competency card has expired within the past two years, or will expire before 30 June can complete a free online refresher course.

"The hospitality sector supports more than 300,000 jobs across NSW and it's

fantastic that so many people have already taken up the free RSA courses," Mr Anderson said.

“We know staff shortages have been impacting the hospitality sector and that is why we have extended the free RSA courses to get people behind the bar, to serve the drinks and collect money for the till.”

Spending includes the purchase of aids and equipment which can be loaned to families for use in their own home, travel costs for treatment and help and advice for patients and families.

WE are really feeling the forces of nature this week, with La Nina venting it’s fury upon the east coast of Australia.

We have managed to get in most of the week’s Golf events but had to cancel this month’s Dolphin Day on Thursday due to the river levels and high tides closing our causeway access - one of the joys of being on an Island.

As I write, minor flooding warnings have been issued for Macksville and Bowraville, we wish everyone to stay safe.

Our week’s featured sponsor was Allied Air Conditioning who also look after the Club’s cooling and heating systems.

On Tuesday 22 February, we played the 'Island Challenge' single stroke event sponsored by Toyota Service Advantage – a multi round series where your best 5 scores throughout the year count towards winning a Drive, Stay and Play Golfing package.

Tuesday’s stroke event was well attended, with most players being able to finish before the afternoon deluge.

This month’s winner was Greg Smith (10) with a fine round of 64 net to win from Nathan Ison (17) with 66 net.

Gross winner was Luke Fry from Coffs Harbour 68.

The best lady golfer was Heather Gray with 70 net.

Only two other players managed to play to their handicap or better – Gary Scott and Jeffrey Vanderwyk, with 67 net.

Other good scores from Ray Guiana, Peter Moxon and Jaydan Taylor from Sawtell with net 70.

The next Island Challenge is on Tuesday 22 March.

The Ladies were extremely lucky to be able to hold their Opening Day Single Stableford on Wednesday 23 February, sponsored by Blondies Hair & Beauty.

Around 120 players were originally down to play, but uncertainty about the weather reduced the field to 64 very keen ladies and included 38 visitors in the field - from Coffs Harbour down to Port Kembla.

Henny Oldenhove (16) with 38 points was the winner of Division 1 (0 to 19) from Machelle Nichol (18) from Coffs Harbour with 36 points.

Dianne O’Leary (20) was the winner of Division 2 (20 to 25) with 38 points from Joanne Habgood (23) from Bonville with 36 points.

The best score of the day went to Christine Mackay (28) from Kew who won Division 3 (26 – 35) with 42 points from Heather Gray (27) with 34 points.

Thursday’s 'Dolphin Day' Medley Stableford was cancelled due to flooding of the causeway and adverse weather.

On Saturday 26 February, once again the field was decimated with player concerns about the predicted weather –

but the course remained in good condition, not withstanding the downfalls of the previous days. There were 42 very dedicated golfers who finally l eft the first tee, with the weather being kind until later in the day – only a few did not finish.

Burial at sea: The legalities

BARRY, a retired professional fisherman, makes a will which includes a provision to the effect that upon his death, he wishes for his remains to be the subject of a burial at sea.

Barry appoints his son, William as his executor.

Many years later, Barry passes-away and William makes enquiries regarding Barry’s burial wishes.

William discovers that he must submit a Burial at Sea Permit Application Form to the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment with an application fee of $1675.

The application form must include the reasons for applying for a burial at sea.

The fact that Barry could demonstrate that he had a ‘connection to the sea’ by virtue of his occupation assisted William’s application.

The fact that his wishes were clearly noted in Barry’s will, also assisted William’s application.

William contacts a local charter operator who provides him with the vessel type and registration number for inclusion in the application.

The application is granted four days after the application is lodged.

William discovers that the sea burial can only occur in waters of a depth greater than 3000m and that his father’s body must be sewn into a shroud made of heavy canvas, containing sufficient weight to ensure it sinks rapidly.

A local funeral director prepares the body in accordance with the Ship Captain’s Medical Guide.

A small group of Barry’s closest friends and family depart the shore and upon reaching a suitable site, a ceremony is conducted, before Barry’s body slides into the sea.

The funeral director completes the process by submitting a full report to the Department, outlining the details, which includes the latitude and longitude of the burial site, the depth of the water and the distance from the nearest land and closest city.

If you are considering a burial at sea, it is important to record your wishes in your will.

The cost of a burial at sea may be prohibitive and if so, consider a cremation and the scattering of your ashes at sea.

WOMEN battled from 1827 - 1902 to gain the right to vote and run for Parliament.

It took 75 years and four generations of women to achieve this victory.

In 1975, the United Nations officially declared March 8 as International Women’s Day. The right to vote for both sexes is a precious and powerful means of electing your local, state and federal representatives.

Rachael Burns, in the February Edition of the Nambucca Senior Citizens local news magazine, reflected that 20 percent of those on the electoral roll did not vote in our last Council election in December 2021 for various reasons.

This represents one in five potential votes lost.

In a population nearing 20,000 over the Nambucca Valley equals approximately 4,000 votes.

This is a grossly large number of wasted, precious votes and voice.

Many people said that they simply didn’t know who the candidates were or what they stood for due to the lack of publicity across all mediums inclusively and comprehensively.

I only became aware of the election via Susan Jenveys prominent and very professional billboards throughout the electorate.

There was no information on Council's website as this role is supposedly the territory of the Electoral Commission.

Although a Meet The Candidates evening was held at the Macksville Showground it was not widely advertised and was only attended by

a small gathering, which the convenor acknowledged as a ‘sea of grey heads’.

There was a headcount of two 1820 year olds together with a likely parent figure.

Due to Covid conditions candidates could not physically attend polling booths to hand out their information but printed flyers could have been made available in lieu most probably, as the whole voting system was in the form of print medium.

Without this information to make an informed choice many people just filled in the ballot from top to bottom in the order presented.

This is called the donkey vote.

Although I am told Council doesn’t have a legal obligation to post election information on its website it would be a significantly useful, informative and supportive initiative for its constituents.

It is an obvious first research portal.

As demonstrated by women’s past historical struggles to earn the right to vote and our 2021 local council election, every vote is a significant and valuable instrument to be asserted.

Let’s aim for full election coverage across all mediums in 2026, including Nambucca Council website so that electors are well informed of election date, profiled candidates and their platforms, polling booths locations and details of any Meet and Greet the candidate evenings well ahead of the election.

A realistic plan for koalas DEAR News Of The Area,

I WAS delighted to read the response from Michael Jones (‘Holes in Conaghan’s koala plan’, p16, 25 February Edition) to Pat Conaghan, Federal Member for Cowper, about the future for koalas in the Cowper electorate.

Land clearing continues, trees which are the homes of koalas are being logged by Forestry Corporation which is subsidised by us taxpayers and condoned by our elected member.

The establishment of the Great Koala National Park would save koalas, create jobs and increase tourism.

How's about supporting this plan Pat? Perhaps we need an alternate member for Cowper who had a realistic plan to save our koalas.

By Mick BIRTLES ON the afternoon of Saturday 26 February a group of Nambucca Valley crossfitters were given an opportunity to take on the world when Two Wolf CrossFit hosted the annual CrossFit Open.

Each year Two Wolf CrossFit in Nambucca Heads provides the opportunity for their members to compete in the CrossFit Open which runs over three weeks and provides competitors with a world-wide ranking.

News Of The Area spoke to the owners of Two Wolf CrossFit, Adam and Miranda Smart, about the CrossFit

Open.

“During the three weeks these CrossFit athletes are tested in their endurance, strength and skill ranging across gymnastic movements, weightlifting, cardio and all mixtures in between,” said Miranda.
