By Rachel MCGREGORALLEN LIVING Languages and Muurrbay Aboriginal Language and Culture Cooperative combined to run the Youth Language Work Professional Development Workshop held Tuesday 25 May - Friday 28 May. Muurrbay hosted the workshop.

Melbourne based Living Languages is a small training organisation that trains Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that are working on or teaching language.

Owing to COVID-19 limitations, Living Languages has adapted how it runs its workshops.

Six young people came from a range of different language groups in NSW to attend the workshop.

News Of The Area had the opportunity to speak with the participants of the workshop.

One of the students, Kelsey Strasek-Barker, explained her enthusiasm for learning more of her father’s language.

This language is Muruwari from Far West NSW. According to Kelsey that language has been “sleeping for a while”.

“Families have been trying to bring it back,” she said.

“Father has been trying to get it back into the schools in the area.

Elders in the community are, Kelsey said, “So happy it is their grandkids, grandnieces and nephews that will be learning the language because they weren’t allowed to speak it.

“It is bringing people together.

“Language has made me very proud and strong of who I am,” Kelsey said.

Neville WiddersMarr is increasing his knowledge of Wanarruaa, his mum’s language.

Neville is from the Hunter Valley.

When asked about being at Muurrbay for the course, Neville said, “I love it, being in this

environment has helped a lot.”

The highlight for Neville was “listening to other people and hearing their stories”.

And Neville’s aim, “Is to share it with other people and to speak my language fluently.”

Will Simon, from Foster Gutung said, “Language is a way to connect.”

Ebony Joachim from Living Languages commented that the Gumbaynggirr, “Have been hugely successful and are determined to

get it to a high level of revitalisation.”

All the students agreed that their own community's languages are not at the level of the Gumbaynggirr community yet.

That’s the goal.

Macksville SES Flood Forum FROM Page 1 outcomes that drew praise and fired frustration as voiced by some 30 plus locals who attended the Flood Forum.

Hosted by Macksville SES and attended by Steve Patterson, Zone Commander North Zone, the Flood Forum was introduced by Steve Lawrence, NSW SES Community Capability Officer.

The objective was to hear from the local community what their experience of the SES was throughout the flood period.

According to attendee Faye Lawson, “Everybody should be encouraged to have a battery-operated radio.

“When the power goes down mobile phones don’t work.”

Local Allan Pickvance expressed frustration at the clogged state of the drainage in the area, with many voices at the Flood Forum concurring.

“When they built the roads around the back of here they created a pond, because they didn’t plan the drainage,” Allan pointed out.

The evacuation came too late for some, with Belynda Pickvance at home knee-deep in river water at 1am when she got the official evacuation message.

“It was too late; our house was already flooded – next to Busways, near where the pool

went under water, that’s our backyard – Willis Street,” she told the group.

Councillor Martin Ballangarry’s personal experience was the surprising velocity of the floodwater.

“There was a lot of fastmoving big logs coming down the flood water,” he said.

It was raised that emergency communication regarding flood waters was scattered across social media, TV and radio, with different messages on various platforms.

“Bring back the Telephone Tree,” urged Martin.

Reigan Nugent asked the question, “We didn’t get a text message at all, but others in our street did – how does that work?”

COVID-19 globally, including three million five hundred and thirty thousand, five hundred and eighty two reported deaths.

As of 26 May 2021, a total of one billion, five hundred and forty six million, three hundred and sixteen thousand, three hundred and fifty two vaccine doses have been administered worldwide.

In NSW as of 31 May there were one million, two hundred and eighty seven thousand and nine hundred and seventy five doses administered.

By Sandra MOON ACCORDING to Healthy North Coast COVID-19 vaccinations in the region have passed over seventy five thousand this week.

This is an increase of around eighteen thousand on the previous fortnight.

And vaccine availability is set to increase in a bid to push the population past the rate of only 2.4 percent of Australians currently vaccinated with a second dose.

With the evolving COVID situation in Victoria, NSW Health is currently recommending people avoid non-essential travel to Greater Melbourne or the City of Greater Bendigo while the COVID-19 concerns notice is in place.

Healthy North Coast CEO Ms Julie Sturgess said it was essential to remain COVID-safe and not let our guard down.

“For those wishing to be vaccinated, GPs will have plenty of doses available and are well informed to advise on the best vaccine for you,” said Ms Sturgess.

“Supplies to general practice are increasing from twenty two thousand, five hundred and fifty per week to twenty six thousand four hundred.

“That means three thousand, eight hundred and fifty more vaccines a week will be available for North Coast residents,” she said.

“These increases follow the 10,000-dose increase earlier this month and will significantly assist with the vaccine rollout, bringing the total number of doses available through general practices to twenty six thousand, four hundred per week,” said Ms Burgess.

Blood Supermoon from Valla Beach

WOWED by the Blood Supermoon last week, May 26, we were out in our groups with necks craned and iPhones straining their capabilities, and it seems everyone felt it was worth rugging up and looking up.

Unpolluted by city lights, our Nambucca Valley night sky is a treat to behold.

Emily Branford, from Frangidelic Photography set up her camera on Valla Beach.

“Last night was so

magical - the buzz was in the air and you could see everyone in the street, out watching it happen,” Emily told News Of The Area.

“I could feel the rest of Australia was out with us, enjoying the magic too.

“It took around an hour and a half from start to complete eclipse and as it came to full eclipse the whole Moon went a dark red colour for about 15-20 minutes before it started lighting up on the side again and going back to the original colour.

“The red went out of it

almost as soon as the eclipse started moving off the Moon.”

Andrew Jacob, Curator and Astronomer at Sydney Observatory told News Of The Area, “As the Moon rose into the sky Earth's dark shadow crept across its face until the Moon was totally engulfed.

“The Moon turned a pale coppery-pink colour.

“But there was a sliver of silvery light remaining on the Moon's limb and, to the eye, it looked as if totality never quite happened.

“But then this was a very

“I have seen numerous lunar eclipses and this one, though short and sharp, was just as enjoyable as all the others.

“Everyone was super excited to be there - both visitors and staff.

“Even the hillside outside the Observatory grounds was buzzing full of people, in groups of two or three, some with telescopes, making a night of it under the stars.”

Asyik Indonesian Arts Festival A Success

By Karen GRIBBIN THE sun shone brightly on Sunday 30 May, and many turned out for the Scotts Head Asyik Indonesian Art Festival held at Scotts Head Reserve.

The festival started with a colourful parade of children of all ages dressed in traditional costumes.

Some walked, others played instruments, and two rode in a Becak (a traditional Indonesian vehicle).

Spearheading the festival was the Scotts Head Primary School who are one of the four schools associated with the Bilingual Programme in NSW, alongside Macksville High School and Eungai Preschool.

The school has become a culturally engaged community with many school students speaking Bahasa Indonesia.

“Indonesian and cultural diversity is taught two days per week at the school,” said Deb Swan, Scotts Head Primary Learning and Support Teacher.

Composting Campaign starts with Kitchen Caddy

LET’S GET Composting Coffs Coast is a campaign created by Nambucca Valley, Bellingen Shire and Coffs Harbour City Councils to deliver a regional campaign to help educate residents about sustainable ways to dispose of food scraps and garden waste and how to compost at home to keep this valuable resource out of landfill.

Key to the initiative is the kitchen caddy – basically

a convenient little lidded container that you can pop your daily food scraps in, to empty into your green wheelie bin.

There are 10,000 free kitchen caddies available to residents who receive a kerbside bin collection service.

Noting the collective power of our actions, Nambucca Valley Council Mayor, Councillor Rhonda Hoban OAM, said disposing of all food scraps and garden waste in the green bin or composting at home is one of the easiest things we can do to reduce our carbon footprint, making a positive impact on the planet.

The Macksville Aquatic centre is missed by the community

By Tamara MCWILLIAM WITH the recent floods in the Nambucca Valley, the Macksville Aquatic Centre has taken a hard hit.

General Manager of Nambucca Valley Council, Michael Coulter, told News Of The Area, “The gym incurred substantial damage in the 1921 March rain/flood event to the extent that the ceiling and wall between the weight’s room and floor exercise room had to be demolished before it fell.”

The Council lodged an insurance claim some weeks ago and is yet to have a determination from them.

In order for the gym to be repaired and back in use Mr Coulter said, “Before the ceiling and wall is replaced there will need to be a redesign and upgrade of a box gutter and downpipes between the two rooms.”

With many locals desperate to get back into the

gym, Council is projecting that the gym should be open and operational by Spring 2021.

The hydrotherapy pool was also in need of repair.

The heat pump and gas heater needed attention before the hydrotherapy pool was back up to operational standard.

Now the hydrotherapy pool is fixed and back in working order, however the community will need to wait

until the July 1 opening date.

Local physiotherapist Tamara Urquhart uses the hydrotherapy pool on a regular basis for her patients and they have all felt the impact of the loss of this amazing community pool in the recent months.

“We use the hydrotherapy pool for rehabilitation, postoperative,” she said, “We had some of our patients go and try the

Soulitude Health patients use the hydrotherapy pool for numerous medical reasons.

Visitors include young children with cerebral palsy, elderly with Parkinson’s Disease, those in pain needing exercise in order to maintain mobility and positive mental

health as well as patients recovering from knee, hip, spine and other surgeries needing rehabilitation.

The Macksville Marlins Swimming Club have also felt the loss of the Aquatic Centre.

They use the hydrotherapy pool to train during the winter months, however now with the pool closed the Club has been traveling to Nambucca Heads indoor pool and are required to wait for a vacancy

in that pool to try and maintain their high level of swimming training.

“It has come at a bad time,” Ms Urquhart said.

All community members have their fingers and toes crossed for a speedy reopening of the Macksville Aquatic centre in order to fulfil the vast and varied needs both physically and mentally of so many people in the Nambucca Valley community.

Australia Post community grants to support mental health

MENTAL health is set to be the focus of Australia Post’s 2021 Community Grants program, recognising the important role local initiatives can play in connecting communities and improving mental health and wellbeing.

Not-for-profit organisations can apply for up to $10,000 for projects that have a primary purpose of improving mental health and wellbeing, will help people meaningfully connect, and are locally led and delivered.

Australia Post Chief Marketing Officer Amber Collins said the events of the past 18 months have highlighted just how important community connection is to our mental health.

“Through a global pandemic, fires and floods

we’ve seen how important it is to find ways to help improve and maintain our mental wellbeing,” she said.

“Our Grants program will fund projects that help build connection between individuals and their community and that encourage open and positive conversations around mental health.”

Australia Post will look to support projects in all states and territories, and across urban and rural areas.

In 2020 more than half of the grants were made to organisations in regional and remote locations.

This included a $2000 grant to the Nambucca Valley Phoenix, for Resilience: Advancing Despite Adversity, an art program and exhibition promoting and celebrating

community resilience.

The art program is designed to support people who have experienced disadvantages to connect, learn new skills and ways to express themselves and create new goals through art practice.

Ms Collins is delighted to see some of the recipient projects from the 2020 program come to life, showing the impact this program can have in local communities.

“We want to support organisations that are helping build community connection through projects with a clear focus on mental health.

“We know that when people in communities connect, they feel better.”

SES assess Flood Forum feedback

'TELL US your experience', is the SES’s clarion call to the Nambucca Valley communities that were impacted by the floods of March 2021.

The volunteer State Emergency Service is setting up community Flood Forums around the area to find out firsthand what they did well, and what they could improve on for future efficiencies in their free rescue service.

Fundraiser at The Pub with No Beer for RUOK?

THE Nambucca Valley branch of RUOK? was established four years ago by Elisse Chapman, Danny Doolan and Gemma Rostron.

They have been fundraising for mental health ever since.

Several years ago, Gemma participated by herself in the City2Surf on behalf of this fundraising group and raised $1,000 to go to the RUOK? foundation.

In the second year attending participating in the annual road running event in Sydney, 15 people attended the City2Surf as a part of

the Nambucca Valley RUOK? Fundraising group and raised $14,000.

By the third year, 50 people from the Nambucca Valley attended the City2Surf as a part of the Nambucca Valley RUOK? fundraising group and raised a massive $40,000.

The committee has grown, and has recently seen Corrine Luffman join this fabulous group of locals.

In their latest fundraising venture, the Nambucca Valley RUOK? group and The Pub with No Beer at Taylors Arm will be jointly holding a fundraising event on Saturday June 12.

“There is some exciting news,” Elisse Chapman told News Of The Area.

While the funds currently raised go to the Australian RUOK? fund, and put to good use throughout Australia helping those in need, very little is spent directly in the Nambucca Valley community.

The committee have brainstormed and established

a non-profit organisation called ‘Time to Talk’ Nambucca Valley.

“This organisation is aimed to get people out and about and to talk to others in the community,” Elisse said.

With Mental Health the key focus, getting people out and about in the Nambucca Valley, and doing things in the community with other people is this non-profit organisation's number one priority.

This organisation will be bringing the funds raised directly to the Nambucca Valley.

“The money will be spent on free events such as board riding, picnic days, beach walks with BBQ’s, education and so much more,” Elisse said.

“We will still be affiliated with RUOK? and Beyond Blue.

“We will be sending some of the funds raised to these brilliant organisations still, but with this new venture, we are excited to be using the money raised in the community for the people of our community.”

Lion stolen from Lions Park

ACCORDING to Don Parvezz, Major Project Chairman from the Nambucca Heads Lions, the club has been working to beautify the Lions Park for two years.

When speaking to News Of The Area Don said, “We wouldn’t have been able to do the project without Nambucca Valley Council and Nambucca Heads RSL Club support.”

In April 2021 Nambucca Valley Council placed two rocks in the Lions Park.

Upon these two rocks the Nambucca Heads Lions Club affixed two concrete lions.

They sourced the lions from Pelicans Landing Garden centre, who according to Don, “Are great supporters of the Lions Club.”

The two lions were still there on Saturday 22 May, but were gone by the morning of Sunday 23 May. “One of the members rang me Sunday to say they’d been taken,” Don said.

According to Don, finishing the park has been, “The biggest project this year.”

“The Lions Club has done it for the community and for tourism.

“We’ve had two weddings there already,” Don said.

In relation to the missing lions, Don had this to say.

“When they steal from us, they aren’t just pinching from the Lions Club.

Foreshore upgrades on the horizon?

OVER the last number of years people have painted inspirational messages, artwork and words around the Nambucca V Wall area.

In the near future however, we may see this area, and other parts of the Nambucca River foreshore, experience developments and improvements once again.

Grant Nelson, the Nambucca Valley Council’s Coordinator of Strategic Planning and Natural Resources, said that plans for the V-wall were exhibited and adopted by the Council in 2019.

Concepts for the improvements for the V Wall and the Foreshore Walk originated in the Nambucca River Masterplan nine months prior in 2018. q

“The Nambucca River Masterplan explores improvements to the public spaces along the foreshore in the lower estuary of the Nambucca River, proposing improvements to infrastructure in the area such as widening footpaths, adding new park shelters and seating.

“Further to improving the function of the space by looking at the infrastructure it also explores opportunities

to highlight the history, culture and environment of the Nambucca River through interpretive information, art and other placemaking activities.”

Mr Nelson said the plan provides the Council with direction for proposed improvements in the foreshore area.

“While it’s largely presented at a conceptual level of detail it provides information to support external funding opportunities.

“Often a successful grant application is followed by a review of the concepts in plan and more refinements or

“These improvements provided new shade shelters, seating, landscaping and lighting as key outcomes to the project which complemented interpretative information regarding the gumbaynggirr culture and language,” explained Mr Nelson.

Both the V Wall and Foreshore walk areas have also proven really popular with young people, especially during school and public holidays.

With these potential upgrades, the Council aims to attract more visitors to the local area than ever before.

“The benefits of public space improvements and

placemaking are extensive but essentially the improvements aim to improve the function and appeal of our foreshore as places the community want to visit and use.

“In doing so the improvements are also likely to support local economies through visitation and tourism, attract investment and business opportunities, provide opportunities to educate the community on local culture, history and the environment,” said Grant.

“In this they had to do a fire safety fire safety management plan, and it was highlighted in that plan that we don’t have a hydrant out there.

“So as soon as I found that out I got onto Council and I’ve now got an assurance that is going to happen.

“Then we can get going in mid-June.

“The best time to do it is over winter, we have no patrols, we can get it ready for spring.”

The deck will be a high tech concrete deck, with Nambucca

Formwork to complete the majority of the work.

Jeff told News Of The Area, “We are trying to use local companies where we can.

“They come and support us, and we can support them.”

Sunday Sips is held two times a month at the club and runs from 2pm-6pm.

Food and beverages are available.

CONSTRUCTION of a decking extension to the Nambucca Heads Surf Life Saving Club is due to start soon.

Jeff Cork, Vice-President, Nambucca Heads Surf Life Saving Club, is very thankful to the community for their continued support of the club.

“It is the community who has raised the money,” Jeff told News Of The Area.

Treasurer Chris Steward shared that, “We’ve raised $160, 000 in two years.

“All from Sunday sips and donations.

“We applied for a couple of grants and we missed out on both of them.”

The Club has applied for a $77,000 grant this year.

“It is called the Surf Club Facility Grant Program,” Chris said.

“It is only for Surf Clubs.

State Heritage Act up for review

THE State’s heritage legislation is now up for review and the community is being called on to comment.

Consultation is now open on a review of the State’s heritage legislation with the NSW Legislative Council Standing Committee on Social Issues formally endorsing an inquiry into the NSW Heritage Act 1977.

The Committee will undertake a comprehensive public inquiry into the adequacy of the Act, considering the NSW Government’s recently released discussion paper, and after hearing from the community and stakeholders.

The Government’s

discussion paper proposes reforms to modernise the Act, including introducing a category system, tailoring listings to protect items while making it easier to undertake conservation, and incentivising adaptive reuse of heritage buildings.

The Review of the Heritage Act 1977 will look at the effectiveness of the Heritage Act and the NSW heritage regulatory system.

The NSW Heritage Act has not been reviewed since 2007 and there have been no major reforms since 1999.

Public submissions can be made on the Parliament of New South Wales website at https://www. parliament.nsw.gov.au until Sunday 27 June.

Locals raise $16,000 for local boy Ollie

OVER two hundred Nambucca Valley locals came out for a fabulous fundraising night at the Macksville Ex Services Club on Friday 28 in honour of Ollie Hawkes.

Ollie suffered a stroke and was diagnosed with Moyamoya earlier this year.

The event consisted of raffles, auctions and fun family games to raise money for the local young man’s recovery.

Event co-organiser Tamara Urquhart told News Of The Area, “Even though the check says $15,605.25, one of the people who bought one of the jerseys up for auction bid six hundred dollars, but wanted to donate another four

hundred, bringing the total to $16,000.00.”

Many local businesses in the Nambucca Valley donated prizes for the raffles and the auction.

“The number of people that contributed to this event was amazing,” Tamara said.

Paul Ireland was the MC for the night and did a fantastic job.

There were three signed football Jerseys donated to the event for auction.

One was donated from the local Bowraville Tigers Rugby League Club along with some other memorabilia.

The other two jerseys, Tamara arranged to have signed by the Rabbitohs and the Queensland State of Origin

football team.

Ollie is doing well with his rehabilitation.

Even though he is still down at Westmead he has moved into the family residence at Ronald McDonald House.

In regards to his rehabilitation, Tamara said, “Ollie is a very strong and determined kid, he just keeps pushing.

“He is just loving going to school.”

Congratulations to all who attended, donated on the night, and were involved in the fabulous fundraisers.

Hands for Reconciliation RECONCILIATION Week 2021 ran from 27 May - 3 June with the theme ‘More than a word. Reconciliation takes action.’

Earthbound Bowra Cafe, located in Nambucca Heads, took action and many customers joined in.

As reported in last week's News Of The Area, the owners of the cafe were hopeful that customers and passers by would chip in at least $2 to purchase a cardboard hand to hang in the street facing window.

“We have been so happy with the response,” said Earthbound Bowra Cafe owner and News Of The Area reporter Rachel McGregorAllen.

“People have loved the idea of having their name put up on a hand to show their support for Reconciliation in Australia.

“I get a surprise every time I drive along the street at the moment, because the usually clear window is full

“A large part of this is building the team,” Deirdre said.

Deidre lists the main training that the members of the cafe team will receive will be in hospitality, business and teamwork skills.

Currently there are six members on the team, and interested youth are encouraged to contact the Youthie if they are interested in training for future events.

“We are trying to engage more youth, with the aim to attract more young people to be part of the mobile cafe scheme.

Valley Artist in the Spotlight: Hamish Stuart

HAMISH Stuart is the talented local musician known as ‘Youngbear’.

Born and bred in the Nambucca Valley he is the youngest child in his family.

Music was an inherited gene for this young artist with his mother being a well-known and loved music teacher, previously of Macksville High School.

“I’ve been playing music ever since I can remember,” Hamish told News Of The Area.

“I love there are no rules, you are free to express yourself without boundaries and limitations,” he said of his love for music.

With an admirable list of musical accomplishments behind him at such a young age, Hamish has released nine

songs in total.

Previously releasing music under the name ‘NVY’ a name he

made up whilst in university, you can find the songs: Blissenvy- Back to you, Famous (which includes a music video), We Good, Monster in the Mirror, and Ocean.

As time progressed and his music career started to take off, Hamish decided to rebrand his music and changed his brand

name to ‘Youngbear,’ The music he has released under this name includes the EP ‘Misbehaviour’.

The four songs released on this album are: Misbehaviour, Foreign (which includes a music video), My Line, and Love Trap, When asked why he changed the name to

Draft Operational Plan, Delivery Program and Long Term Financial Plan on public exhibition

ECONOMIC development, roads, bridges and community facility improvements are at the forefront of Nambucca Valley Council’s draft Operational Plan, Delivery Program and Long Term Financial Plan (LTFP), which is on public exhibition until 4.00pm Thursday 24 June 2021.

Mayor of Nambucca Valley Council, Councillor Rhonda Hoban, OAM encourages interested community members to

provide feedback on the draft documents, which outline the projects, services and programs Council plans on delivering in 2021/22 and states Council’s financial performance over the coming financial years.

“The draft 2021/22 budget provides $19.6m for capital works including $9.94m for the Valla Urban Growth Area Employment Land funded through grants and Council reserves, an allocation of $2.269m for the Nambucca Heads

library/cultural precinct expansion funded by grants, loans and Council reserves and $769,000 for the rehabilitation of Princess/ River/Wallace Streets in Macksville which is funded through a Fixing Local Roads Round 2 grant and Council water fund reserves,” Cr Hoban said.

“In addition to our planned bridges, drainage, sealed and unsealed road programs, Council will also be delivering various environmental works and

some improvements to community facilities and public spaces around the Valley, including playground equipment at EJ Biffin Park and Valla Nature Reserve, upgrade of the Captain Cook Lookout, cemetery improvements and new public amenities in Nambucca Heads.

“I encourage all interested residents to review these documents and comment on our proposed program of works before the close of the exhibition period.

Art from the ashes

A FREE exhibition of art created by members of the community affected by the 2019 bushfires is set run for five weeks at Matilda Street Gallery in Macksville, with an opening event at 6pm on Friday, June 11.

The Black Bird Creative Bushfire Recovery Exhibition, which will run until July 16, features pieces created during workshops that multidisciplinary artist Nancy Sposato and arts therapist Marg Coutts ran in South Arm, Utungun and Taylors Arm to provide an opportunity for about 40 community members to take time to process, creatively respond and connect

to others in the wake of the bushfires.

“This upcoming exhibition will show many of the powerful works created by the participants,” Sposato said.

“We see this as an opportunity for the participants to take some time to return to a gentle poetic space and to take the opportunity to reflect on their recovery journey, as well as an opportunity to raise awareness in the broader community that disaster recovery is an ongoing process.”

A workshop participant described the workshops as a “very powerful to bring people together through art”,

noting that “connection with others is the balm we need”.

The free exhibition opening event on Friday, June 11, will include a Welcome to Country by Aunty Cheryle Donovan and a supper for the community to share.

The Black Bird Creative Bushfire Recovery Exhibition is supported by the NSW Department of Primary Industries, Australian Red Cross Disaster Recovery and Arts Mid North Coast.

Black Bird Creative Recovery has recently secured funding to roll out three more workshops in the Nambucca Valley, currently slated to take place in September and November this year and March next year.

“The music industry is very money driven, if you have lots of money to invest, you can get the views quickly but in my opinion it’s better to build a loyal fan base slowly.

“Don’t let one person’s opinion knock you off your goals, once you put yourself out there to be judged, people will.

"Don’t be afraid of change and growth, it’s healthy and can lead you to finding out who you are as an artist," he said.

Dear Jasminda,

Home-made will and same-sex de facto claim SCOTT makes a home-made will, leaving his $3 million estate to his closest blood relatives, being his two nieces. The will is not witnessed.

When Scott passes away shortly thereafter, Harry makes a claim against Scott state, alleging that he had a secret same-sex relationship with Scott for 10 years and that the home-made will is not valid.

Scott’s estate makes a cross-claim against Harry, alleging that he transferred funds from Scott’s bank accounts to himself, shortly before Scott’s passing.

In support of Harry’s claim that there was a de facto relationship between himself and Scott, he gives evidence that they normally had dinner together after work and that they had a sexual relationship.

Harry also says that Scott gave him $150,000 to purchase a business, which they had intended to run together.

He says that Scott never wanted the money to be repaid.

In defense of Harry’s claim, it is argued that the transfer of funds constituted loans that were to be repaid to Scott’s estate and evidence is put before the Court, that during Scott’s lifetime, he had strong heterosexual relationships and never displayed any homosexual interests.

The Court states that if Harry were eligible to make a claim, he needed to establish that he and Scott were “living together” at the date of death.

The Court rules that although the concept of “living together” did not necessarily require a permanent or exclusive common residence, that Harry had failed this test and accordingly, was not eligible to make a claim and did not have standing to dispute the validity of the will.

The Court also rules that the $150,000 was fraudulently misappropriated and ordered Harry to repay the funds.

United Nations World Environment Day

DEAR News Of the Area,

THIS Saturday June 5 is the United Nations World Environment Day. This year's theme is Generation/ Ecosystem Restoration and is focused on bringing worldwide awareness and resulting action to protect our environment.

How pertinent this is now for this area in which we live.

I wonder how many people are aware that there are huge and numerous areas of logging planned by Forestry Corp for this area in the near future.

The planned percentages are extremely excessive.

This is not a minor operation.

Our local forests have been earmarked for massive logging.

Areas planned include: The Kalang River Headwaters, Pine Creek bordering on Bongil Bongil National Park, Newry State Forest and Wild Cattle Creek up north.

The irreplaceable loss of these beautiful and diverse parcels, many proven to be habitats for now threatened and endangered species, is nothing short of destruction on a scale we have not seen before.

All this is the wake of the horrendous Black Summer Bushfires.

The way we are going, our iconic koala will be extinct by 2050.

Or sooner if this wanton destruction is allowed to go ahead.

Areas of the lower mid north coast near Port Macquarie estimated koala losses around 20,000. We were fortunate that Newry/ Pine Creek and Kalang at least managed to escape the fires.

All after a massive drought as well.

Only to be earmarked for logging.

These forests are precious and should be preserved for our Koalas and other rare and endangered species.

They need to live and feed somewhere.

It has been proven there is no economic sense to log.

Twenty cents profit per tree being an estimate.

Twenty cents!

Where will our logs go?

Down to Sydney where there is koala habitat being flattened for a massive housing development.

Double destruction.

It is madness that this can be happening in the midst of a Climate Emergency (scientifically proven).

Locals are coming together to speak out and stand shoulder to shoulder together to fight for our forests and our native animals.

Our Indigenous Elders and young people are taking a stand at Newry Forest.

It is their land after all.

Many of us moved here for the beauty of this unique area.

On this day June 5 please consider what is at stake and let your Member of Parliament know how you feel.

Let Premier Gladys Berejiklian know how strongly you feel about saving our beautiful precious and sacred places.

Pen her a letter and be a voice for our native animals and their habitat.

Support the Great Koala National Park.

Let our region be a treasure for generations after us as it was before us.

Let your voice be heard.

SUPERMARKETS are such fraught places.

People see us at our most unkempt when we realise at 9pm that there's no bread for lunches, our most angry, when someone rams into our heels with their overloaded trolley, and our most impatient, when the woman being served says, 'Oh, that tomato was on sale and you've charged me the full price', which leads to a loudspeaker call for a price check and then confirmation that the customer had it wrong and her decision to not worry about the tomato after all, which segues into a refunding process, by which stage you've missed the first 15 minutes of your favourite television program for the week and eaten the Snickers bar you bought to improve the viewing experience.

Checking out the groceries of the person in front is a pretty innocent past-time, but commenting is next-level intrusion. I've often wondered about the lives of people in front of me when they purchase 16 tins of cat food, a Tiramisu and some Deep Heat cream. A crazy cat woman who has so many cats that curl around her body at night while she's eating dessert that she has sustained a shoulder injury? Who knows.

Now, I suspect if you'd had a packet of pasta, two tins of tomatoes, some garlic bread and a jar of Bolognese sauce in your trolley, that the man behind you could have been on the money, and was probably just engaging in some friendly pass-the-dreary-queue-time banter. If, however, you'd had a trolley with Four Seasons Glow-in-the Dark lubricant, mouth gargle, Natropathica Horny Goatweed For Him, and some Double-strength Fish Oil tablets, how would the conversation have gone? 'Enjoying date night tonight, are we? I'd go easy on the Fish Oil if I were you. That stuff can cause some quite unpleasant reflux.'

More irritating, though, is the man's use of the first-person plural pronoun 'we'. It seems to insinuate his involvement, somehow, in your evening meal, and, by extension, the potential for his involvement in the more intimate example offered to show just how inappropriate it is to chat to someone about their trolley contents.

Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook

A WETTER than average winter is expected across much of the country, according to the Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook: June 2021 – August 2021.

The Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre (BNHCRC) today published its mid-year seasonal bushfire outlook which covers all states and territories through to August.

“We’ve seen the Northern Territory and most of Queensland experience heavy rainfall over the wet season, which means significant fuel growth for potential fires.

“We urge all Australians to keep in mind that normal

risk does not mean there is no risk, and everyone has a role to play when it comes to bushfire preparedness.

“Small steps can go a long way to protecting your home and we can all use the winter months to our advantage by making sure that grass is trimmed and gutters are cleared.

Nambucca Strikers FC Commemorate Indigenous Round

By David WIGLEY NAMBUCCA Strikers Football Club commemorated the Northern NSW Football RTC Group Indigenous Round with a smoking ceremony prior to the kick off of the women's division two match against Sawtell FC. Strikers Senior Women’s Coach Rhys Jones explained the significance of the event.

“Our women’s senior team hosted fourth place Sawtell in the inaugural Indigenous round.

“An incredibly significant round of football in our association and our valley, our strong ties with our Indigenous community through our very own indigenous players made this round a very emotional and revered event.

“Special mention to the women’s senior team from Sawtell FC who participated and supported the prematch ceremonies and made it an event to share with everyone,” said Rhys.

In a game of end to end football the Nambucca Strikers went down 1-0, which Club President Jenna Welsh described as a “ripper of a game”.

Coach Rhys Jones based his team talk around the significance of the Indigenous round.

“The pre-match talk was centered around the significance of the Indigenous round, pride in yourselves, your team, your club, and community, giving it your all and leaving it all on the field.

“After a disappointing game the previous week against Woolgoolga the girls had a lot to prove to themselves.

“The game started well with the Nambucca midfield competing for every ball smothering Sawtell’s attacks and attempts to keep possession, fighting against a three goal advantage of a southerly breeze.

“The Nambucca girls fought hard in midfield covering our back four and Deslie Townley working tirelessly as our lone striker.

“It was not until the 30th minute that the Sawtell team scrambled a goal from a cross from the left hand side.

“However, the steel and commitment that had disappeared in the previous week had returned, and the girls continued the fight until half time with Sawtell holding on grimly to a one goal lead.

“Typically, as the day draws to an end the breeze starts to drop and the

“The last ten minutes was a nail biting affair, every Sawtell counter attack was thwarted by Liz Smith, Jemma Burtonwood and Kiarra Cohen with everyone pushing forward there was always a chance of a late Sawtell goal.”

Unfortunately for the home side, they were unlucky

not to snatch a late equaliser.

“With five minutes to go Lilly Woodward collected a ball from the left following great buildup work from Alex Habgood and Kyesha Cohen, Lilly beat two defenders only to see her shot from outside the box rattle the cross bar, never say die the girls still streamed forward and with no time left Kiarra Cohen hit a ball from all of 35 meters only to see it whiz passed the post,” Rhys said.

The Coach was very proud of his players despite the tight loss.

“Game over, one nil loss, disappointing?

“No, in a very short

time this very young and inexperienced team have proved they can mix it with the big guns, this group is growing together, developing and bonding to a very formidable unit for the future, we aren’t chasing trophies we aren’t chasing wins we are chasing improvement and the growth in women’s football within the Club and the Valley.”

Rhys paid tribute to the effort of his young players, who performed well beyond their years.

“Special mention to midfielders Toria Klete, Jewelle Nelson, Alex Habgood and Lilly Wood who are all no

older than 16.

“I could mention the whole 15 who gave it everything.”

Rhys and Sawtell Coach Graham Shanahan agreed it was one of the finest games of football they have seen in the competition.

“Both teams did not let up, played the game in a spirit connected to such a significant celebration of our Indigenous people past and present.

“This round will hold a significant place in future seasons in striving to help understand and grow with our Indigenous brothers and sisters,” said Rhys.

Ghosts went down 24-22 at home to the Coffs Harbour Comets.

After starting their season with four straight victories, the Sea Eagles have lost their last three matches to sit at second on the ladder, while the Ghosts sit at the top of the ladder with five wins from their opening seven matches.

The Sea Eagles won 2212 the last time they played the Ghosts during Round 3 in Grafton.

The Bellingen Valley/ Dorrigo Magpies host the Woolgoolga Seahorses this weekend with both clubs coming off wins in Round 7.

The Magpies beat the Seahorses 30-26 the last time they met in Round 3 in Woolgoolga.

The Coffs Harbour Comets hit the road for Round 8 when they travel to take on the South Grafton Rebels.

The Comets have started to turn their season around

with two straight victories against the Woolgoolga Seahorses and Grafton Ghosts, while the Rebels are coming off a 28-16 loss to the Seahorses.

The Rebels were 26-18 winners the last time the two teams met in Round 3 at Geoff King Motors Oval.

Sharks defeat Titans in Coffs

THE Cronulla Sharks defeated the Gold Coast Titans 38-10 in front of a sell out crowd last Sunday at C.ex International Stadium.

The Titans started brightly with Brian Kelly scoring after three minutes and Jamal Fogarty converting but that sent the Sharks into a feeding frenzy with six consecutive tries and Shaun Johnson scoring seven kicks from seven.

Sharks winger Ronaldo Muliato terrorised the Titans defence scoring two tries, utilizing his lightning pace and a change of direction that left the Titans defence diving at shadows.

It was a stellar performance from halfback Shaun Johnson in combination plays who finished with one assist and seven kicks notching up 14 individual points.

It was a memorable afternoon for Johnson who celebrated his 200th NRL match leading the Sharks onto the pitch with his daughter in his arms.

The affable Johnson was cheered on by the home crowd following his visit to Orara High School on Friday afternoon with teammates Wade Johnson and Will Chambers.

Matt Moylan combined with Johnson in the halfback position with two try assists and racked up 156 run metres.

The Moylan and Johnson partnership also combined effectively in defence thwarting runs from David Fifita to keep the explosive second rower off the scoresheet.

It was an impressive Sharks defence who left no space for Titans playmakers Jamal Fogarty and Tanah Boyd to exploit in a disciplined 38-10 victory which left the 7,362 spectators wanting more.

The buoyant crowd lapped up the whole experience which started with a Smoking Ceremony to commemorate the NRL’s Indigenous round, cheerleaders, mascots engaging with the crowd, an under 15s representative match and a half time goal kicking competition The Indigenous round held special significance for the players, as demonstrated when David Fifita asked News Of The Area, “Can you take a picture of us brothers?”

The Titans and Sharks were generous with their time after the match giving autographs and selfies to the enthusiastic crowd who returned their appreciation by lining up for NRL

merchandise after the match.

Sharks Coach Josh Hannay was buoyant in the post match conference and when News Of The Area asked for his opinion on the venue his first words were “top notch”.

“Top notch, the hospitality has been incredible, the playing surface is fantastic and it was great to play in front of a full stadium, it’s taken a lot of collaboration and thanks to the Council for helping to make it happen, they’ve been great to work with, I would like to come back again,” said Hannay.

Titans Coach Justin Holbrook echoed Hannay’s sentiment but said there was one big problem.

Nambucca Valley’s All Schools swimming champs!

ON Friday May 28 at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre a handful of Nambucca Valley teenagers competed in the All Schools Swimming Championships for New South Wales.

The All Schools Championship is the final stage of State school swimming where the very best of all schools, both private and public, meet to

swim it out against each other in the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.

Macksville High School had a large number of students attend the event this year.

Millie Edwards, Maya Lamb, Isabella Winslow and Leah Pickvance swam the 4 x 50m freestyle relay in the 14 year girls division, placing eighth on the day.

Jazmin Sutton, Millie Edwards, Courtney Clark and

Leah Pickvance swam the 4 x 50m medley relay in the 1516 year girls division, placing eighth on the day as well.

Courtney Clark swam the 15 year girls, 50m butterfly and placed ninth.

Millie Edwards swam the 14 year girls, 100m butterfly placing second.

She also swam the 200m butterfly placing third.

Darcy Welsh swam the 17-18 year boys, 200m breaststroke, placing eighth,

Leah Pickvance swam the 14 year girls 50m butterfly and placed fourth, and the 100m butterfly placing fifth.

She then swam the 50m freestyle and placed sixth.

From John Paul College, Jaxon White swam the 13 year boys, 50m freestyle event and placed eigth.

And Ethan Blockey from the Nambucca Valley

Christian Community School swam the 15 year boys, 50m butterfly placing sixth, the 50m breaststroke placing sixth and the 50m backstroke where he also placed sixth.

It was a fantastic outcome considering the talented young swimmers from the Macksville Marlins Swimming Club didn’t have access to the Macksville Aquatic Centre to train for the championship due to the flood damage

Division 1 was won

by Brett Peake (15) from Lakelands with 40 points from Kathleen Griffin (18) with 38 points. Division 2 winner was Joe Street (20) with 41 points from Jeffrey Vanderwyk (21) with 40 points.

Other good rounds from Stuart Johnston, Michael Heathwood, David Ogilvy & Bruce Mason, all with 38 points.

The Ball Rundown went to 33 points on countback.

Saturday 29 May was a Men’s 2 Person Ambrose event, and qualifying round for the “KENO Let’s Play Ambrose” event run by Golf NSW. Congratulations to the Winners and Keno qualifiers Stephen Doherty & Joe Street (9.25) scoring 60.75 Net. Runners Up and reserve qualifiers were Neil Duffus & Thomas Robbins (11) with 62 Net. We have been blessed with great Autumn weather this past week - great weather for playing golf and allowing our greens staff to “make hay while the sun shines”.

Golfers will have noticed that much of the mud from the flooding has been removed or re-positioned for landscaping purposes, and work on some bunker refurbishments is also underway.
