By Mick BIRTLES THE official Australia Day gathering for the Nambucca Valley this year took place at the Unkya Reserve, Eungai Creek.

The theme for this year was ‘Reflect, Respect, Celebrate - We’re all part of the story’.

A large number of locals from all over the Nambucca Valley and adjoining districts turned up for a day of fun, delicious food and great music.

The day got underway ‘officially’ with a Smoking Ceremony led by Uncle Martin Ballangarry OAM and a Welcome to Country by Aunty Raelene Ballangarry.

The Mayor of the Nambucca Valley, Cr Rhonda Hoban OAM, addressed the gathering and said, “Australia Day is an opportunity to reflect on the positives and the negatives of the past, be thankful that we are here in the Nambucca Valley and

Nambucca Valley Council honours outstanding members of the local David Martin, Greg Tutt, community at its National Celebration Day Awards Mulvihill, Peter Trisley, Brigid Stenberg, Doug years.

The Celebration Day Awards ceremony provides an opportunity to show appreciation for those who have devoted time and energy to the community, and to applaud the endeavours of those who have achieved success in sports and cultural fields.

Guests were entertained by the Nambucca District Band with Barry Noble as they entered the club, and Barry sang the National Anthem early in the program.

The Welcome to Country, presented by esteemed elder Raelene Ballangarry, was followed by another warm welcome from the Mayor, Cr Rhonda Hoban OAM. Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey assisted the Mayor in the presentation of the Awards, praising the strong community spirit in the Nambucca Valley.

“Congratulations to all

nominations; such brilliant people throughout the Valley,” said Ms Pavey.

In his address, Celebration Day Ambassador and Superbike Champion Warwick Nowland took us along on his journey from country kid to double world champion and a place on the world stage.

It was an extraordinary achievement by an ordinary Australian, and a fitting parallel with the citizens being honoured on this National Celebration Day – ordinary Australians who have stepped up to do extraordinary things for their community.

POLICE charged a man with two high-range drink-driving offences after being stopped twice within four hours in the state’s north last week.

About 4.40pm on Wednesday 26 January 2022, officers attached to Mid North Coast Police District were notified of a red Mazda driving in a dangerous manner near the Captain Cook Lookout at Nambucca Heads.

Police stopped the vehicle a short time later on Liston Street and the driver

when they stopped the same vehicle.

The driver – a 39-year-old man – was again subjected to a roadside breath test, which returned a positive result.

The man was arrested and taken to Macksville Police Station, where he underwent a secondary breath analysis which returned an alleged reading of 0.191.

He was charged with two further offences – drive with high range PCA and drive motor vehicle while licence suspended.

The Nambucca Heads man was refused bail to appear at Port Macquarie Local Court on Thursday 27 January 2022.

Nambucca Senior Citizens Centre Open Day

THERE is an understandable misconception that the Nambucca Senior Citizens Centre is for the sole use of senior citizens.

On Saturday 19 February the centre committee is hoping to correct that misconception by holding an Open Day to demonstrate it is a facility for everyone in our community.

The Nambucca Senior Citizens Centre Open day will run from 10:00am until 3:00pm and showcase the many uses the centre has.

You will see demonstrations and displays from the Northern Rivers Burlesque Group, the Orchid Society, Ruth’s Dancers, Harbour Performance Group, Marine Rescue, the Nambucca Writers Group, WIRES MNC, the Buddhist Meditation Discussion Group and many more.

Radio 2NVR will be there on the day conducting a live broadcast.

News Of The Area spoke to Dianne Gulson, President of the Nambucca Senior Citizens Centre, who said, “We are so excited to show the community the range of activities conducted

PUBLIC PESTICIDE NOTIFICATION 2022 Council will be conducting weed control activities on roads, reserves, laneways, pathways, drains, public and Crown reserves under Council’s management on a quarterly basis commencing January 2022 (inclusive) in the following areas: Nambucca Heads, Scotts Head, Valla Beach, Eungai Rail, Eungai Creek, Allgomera, Warrell Creek, Macksville, Gumma, Congarinni, Talarm, Utungun, Taylors Arm, Bowraville, South Arm, North Arm, Upper and Lower Buckrabendinni, Missabotti, Kennaicle Creek, Valla Rural and North Macksville.

An extensive weed control program will be performed on the Council owned or managed road reserve system, targeting weedy grass species including Giant Rats Tail and Coolatai Grass and woody weeds including Lantana and Privet. Herbicide application may be performed at any time, throughout the day or night, when weather conditions are suitable.

Bindiis and other broadleaf weeds will also be targeted within reserves and sporting fields, throughout all townships of the Nambucca Valley Council.

The herbicides used will be those registered for use on the particular plants being controlled.

The program may be altered without notice dependent upon weather and plant conditions.

Signs stating “Weed Spraying in Progress” will be displayed when actual spraying is being undertaken.

The influence of the Prussian born Eichmann is evident around the Nambucca Valley and he was instrumental in the construction of the district’s first school and was a trustee of the original School of Arts in Nambucca Heads.

Community wants to ‘Save Scotts Head’

By Karen GRIBBIN THE Scotts Head Community Group (SHCG) held information sessions on Friday, 25 January to discuss a proposed Ingenia Lifestyle over 55s development in the village, with approximately 70 people attending the first session.

A subcommittee has been formed called ‘Save Scotts Head’ to liaise with Nambucca Valley Council and Ingenia Lifestyle about the communities’ concerns and objections over the touted development.

Save Scotts Head subcommittee member Ray Fowke was the mediator for the two backto-back information sessions.

Ingenia Lifestyle is part of the Ingenia Communities group, an ASX 200 listed operator with more than 90 communities, including holiday parks, residential rental communities and lifestyle communities, located across Australia.

Ingenia’s present proposal is for a

minimum of 100 prefabricated manufactured dwellings at 11 Ocean Ridge Road, Way Way. Currently 899 people live in Scotts Head and locals are concerned this development has the potential of increasing the population by a further 200 people (assuming two people per dwelling, and excluding expansion at a later date).

As yet there has not been a Development Application presented to Nambucca Valley Council, and the Scotts Head Community Group believe extensive community consultation is required before a decision is made.

“There is no planning approval as yet, there needs to be detailed environmental assessments, and community consultation.

“This development is not a done deal,” said Ray Fowke.

Scotts Head residents are concerned a development of this type could cause a significant shortfall in funds for Council and increase costs for ratepayers.

Ingenia Lifestyle developments do not pay development contributions to Nambucca Council, nor will its residents pay LGA rates.

The proposal is for a manufactured housing estate, with buildings to be built off-site and delivered. q Potential site issues were presented to the community members in attendance.

Ingenia Lifestyle’s manufactured housing estates are mostly gated communities, and generally do not have onsite healthcare or nursing facilities.

The costs of any improvements needed in infrastructure due to this development will be borne by Nambucca Council, and residential ratepayers now and in the future.

Members of the community have also expressed concerns that a specific over 55s development excludes major sectors of the community, and does not address local housing availability issues.

Nambucca Valley Council has already identified a site of 14 hectares of vacant residential and village zoned land in Scotts Head supplying about 174 lots (Local Strategic Planning Statement 2020), which some locals consider a more prudent development opportunity.

At the information sessions community members voiced their concerns around the risk of bushfires and floods, as most of the south side of Scotts Head Road is native bushland.

Being an over 55’s proposal, concerns raised about trying to move elderly people with low mobility in a fire event, putting residents and fire services at a greater risk.

Other concerns raised related to access to

medical and community services.

Scotts Head’s only Medical Service has closed books, and the closest hospital and available health care services are in Macksville.

Concerns over infrastructure, water, sewer and roads, preserving Aboriginal cultural heritage, and native vegetation and wildlife were also voiced at the meetings.

According to the Ingenia Lifestyle website, the company has “now commenced a process of community consultation to hear the thoughts of local residents, provide an opportunity for feedback and take questions from the local community”.

“Ingenia Communities is keen to ensure its commitment to good design is reflected in its approach to this future community and that the project is sympathetic to the local context in Scotts Head.”

Scotts Head Parking Issues

PARKING is at a premium during holiday time in Scotts Head.

The Day Reserve area does not have the capacity to cater to holiday visitors and overflow parking from the Reflections Holiday Park.

The congestion caused by this issue sees degeneration of the grassed areas within the Reserve by illegal parking.

With only one access route into and out of the Reserve, traffic jams up and people get annoyed, with cars stretched from the entrance to the Surf Club, and past the boat ramp.

News Of The Area met with Moira Ryan and George Driussi, members of the Scotts Head Community Group, to talk about the issues facing the Reserve at holiday time.

“There can be up to 36 cars parked here at 7:00 am, it's fortunate that no one has been hit by a car,” said Moira Ryan.

The congestion starts at the Aiden Street entrance.

Once designated parking spaces are full, people begin to park in the no parking areas, and on the grass verges.

Bollards were put in to stop grassed area parking, but not all grassed areas were included.

“As a community we’d like to see more support from Rangers regarding traffic, illegal camping, dogs and parking,” said Moira Ryan.

Reflections Holiday Park are the managers of the Reserve area in regards to parking, maintenance, and weed control.

Members of the Scotts Head Community Group are all volunteers and the weed problems in the dune area and the Reserve are now largely beyond their capacity to manage on their own.

into three parts,” said George Driussi. “(That) being that Reflections manages the park only, and the Reserve, Headland, and Aiden Street Crown Land are put under a separate private contractor.

“As yet I’ve had no reply,” said Mr Driussi.

News Of The Area contacted Nambucca Valley Council regarding the policing of illegal parking.

Tom Cornelius, Ranger, Nambucca Shire Council said,

“Reflection has been approached on numerous occasions to have Council logo included in Park signage, to date no reply has been given.”

Reflection’s is the manager of this area and without signage changes, Council can take no action.

Residents note additional problems with storm water drainage at the Surf Club access that runs water across the boat ramp eroding the beach, and unsafe access steps covered with sand making access dangerous for young children.

Reflections were contacted for comment but at time of printing had not replied.

Art Group for Youth returns at La Casa

By Rachel MCGREGORALLEN LA CASA Youth Service is opening the doors at the Nambucca Youthie for the return of their Art Group for Youth on Tuesday 8 February.

The program, which ran during Term 4 2021 for the first time at the Youthie, was a huge success with youth that attended.

Ms Melissa Shapiro, from GenHealth, told News Of The Area, “The aim of the group is to bring young people together in a supportive and safe place where they can be themselves and connect with other young people in the area.”

Feedback that GenHealth received from participants is that the art sessions were enjoyed, offering an opportunity to form connections with others in a safe and creative space.

“The same young people came every week which shows they felt safe, comfortable and happy to attend.

“It seems to give them a chance to connect with new people that they don’t see at school and also feel a part of a community,” said Ms Shapiro.

The focus this term will be running art sessions with a purpose, beginning with a ten minute introduction on a social issue where youth will watch a video and then discuss the topic as a group.

Following this short introduction an art activity will begin that relates to the social issue.

The medium of art is an easy relaxed way for the participants to connect and enjoy what La Casa Youth Service has to offer.

“Everyone can do art and it is a great way of connecting young people.

“It is also therapeutic and a good way of chilling out at the end of the day,” explains Ms Shapiro.

La Casa Youth Service is asking that all participants register that they will be attending.

Valla author’s book launch invitation

“In 2014 I published my first book, ‘Mostly Behind The 8-Ball’, an autobiography I was coerced to write and during 'work in progress' I discovered I enjoyed writing so much, for its own sake, that I wrote another eight books and am currently working on two more.

“During the passing of time, I became a tad tired of thrillers where the hero is always a James Bond clone.

VALLA’s Andrew Andrews, a prolific author for the past eight years, writing under the name of A.J. KepitisAndrews, launches his ninth book on 16 February.

‘The Snatching of Susan Bauford’ is a novel the author describes as “a soda thriller with a whiskey punch”.

Andrew spoke to News Of The Area about his latter-life calling to write.

U3A highlight 2022 courses at Open Day

NAMBUCCA Valley University of the Third Age (U3A) held their Open Day on Sunday, 27 January, highlighting the numerous courses on offer in 2022.

U3A is open to retired or semi-retired persons looking to learn something new, and those wishing to share their own skills with the community.

This year’s message is ‘Come join us. See what you can do in 2022’.

The Open Day was held in the Macksville Ex-Services Club.

Morning tea was provided, and the day finished off with lunch in the bistro.

Pete Rundle will be presenting a new course this Semester called ‘How to Identify Birds’.

“It’s been quite a few years since I presented this course, so I thought it was time to run it again,” said said Pete Rundle, a U3A presenter and Treasurer.

“I’ve been a member of Coffs Harbour Bird Watchers, it’s a hobby I’ve had for the last eight to nine years,” he said.

There are 36 courses on offer covering arts, crafts, music, history, radio training, strength and balance classes, gardening and dancing; to name a few.

A new item this semester will be a Trivia Plus Afternoon run by Debbie Anderson at the Nambucca Valley Bridge Club, Nambucca Heads on Wednesday 9 March from 2 – 5 pm.

By Andrew VIVIAN PRIME Minister Scott Morrison recently announced $50 million to facilitate the long-term protection and recovery efforts for Australia’s koalas.

He said the funding would bring together the best of the best researchers, land managers, veterinarians and citizen scientists to protect one of the most special species in the world.

The $50 million is to be spread over next four years and includes $20 million for habitat and health protection projects, $10 million for community-led initiatives, $10 million to extend the National Koala Monitoring Program,

“The quickest and simplest way to achieve this is to commit to ending loss making native forest logging and restore these forests just as the WA and Victorian Government have announced,” he continued.

Mr Evans said, “The taxpayer already owns these forests so it’s the cheapest strategy.

“We must also address widespread land clearing of koala habitat on private land and declare new targeted protected areas such as the Great Koala National Park,” he said.

“The solution is simple, koalas need mature connected forests if they are to survive

and what we don’t need is more research to tell us they are endangered,” Mr Evans said.

Local conservationist Tim Cadman from Griffith University described the package as “too little, too late”.

“All the while the bigger problems of climate change, logging and land clearing continue unchecked, our national icon is doomed,” he said.

“Koala habitat must be identified and protected and funding museums, zoos and hospitals is no substitute.

“Political will is required to confront this challenge head-on, not sideways,” Dr Cadman said.

Men’s Shed grants on offer

THE Australian Government Department of Health National Shed Development Program’s new round of grants is open for applications, closing on 25 February 2022.

Liz MacDonald, Shed Development, Australian Men’s Shed Association told News Of The Area, “The grants program has been administered by The Australian Men’s Shed Association since 2010 with Round 23 currently open.

“Times have been quite difficult for Sheds during the past two years with Covid lockdowns and other Public Health Orders.

“As not-for-profit organisations, Men’s Sheds rely on their fundraising to maintain the activities and operations of their Shed.

“The National Shed Development Program grants provide an opportunity for the Sheds to make improvements to the facility, additional activities for their members and contribute to their communities,” said Liz. Bruce Andersen, Nambucca Heads Men’s Shed, told News Of The Area, “The Australian Men’s Shed Association Grants through the Australian Government

Department of Health have been very helpful in the past for the development of the Nambucca Heads Men’s Shed as well as many other sheds around the country.

“In round 21 we were able to purchase safety glasses, masks, a defibrillator, water tank, electrical tag testing machine and training.

“Also, in the past we were able to get a portable kitcheneating room, portable office and storage containers.

“The Association also provides helpful advice on men’s wellbeing, shed management and an affordable insurance plan.”

Kathy Oliver, General Manager, Lifetime Connect Macksville Men’s Shed, told News Of The Area, “The Lifetime Connect Macksville Men’s Shed has provided social networks and support for people in the community for 21 years.

“It is a place for men to come together to share their skills and experiences.

“It is a place for creativity, teamwork and celebration.

“The Men’s Shed attends community events and supports community activities.

“They use their skills to craft a range of products to raise funds at local markets

Participants in the program discuss local issues and strive to develop change locally.

“Previously the results have ranged from personal changes to home and lifestyle such as installing grey water systems, water tanks, insulation and veggie gardens to community projects such as garden tours, establishing local communications networks, installing neighbourhood food stalls and running free resilience building workshops for the community,” said Kathleen.

The nature of the Resilient Communities process, with

participants designing the actions they need to take, makes the program relevant to everyone, no matter how far along they are on the journey to resilience.

The timeframe for action is also not limited to the eightmonth program.

The resilience action plans help guide the ongoing journey to being prepared for disasters.

“An important outcome of Resilient Communities is that individuals and communities become informed, innovative and involved, with their own prioritised action plans to guide their onward journey,” said Sue Lennox, OzGREEN Co-founder.

Kicking off in March,

each month there will be a different focus topic - Fire, Water, Food, Energy, Economy and Health - from a global perspective online, and from a local perspective within these communities, led by local leaders.

The Resilient Communities program is free for participants and is a Bushfire Community Recovery and Resilience Fund project through the joint Commonwealth/State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements as well as the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal and the Yulgilbar Foundation.

Golden Oldies cricket comes to Macksville THE Coffs Harbour Golden Oldies veteran’s cricket team took part in the Over 65’s NSW Championships being hosted by Hastings Veteran’s Cricket this week.

Such has been the interest in veteran’s cricket that titles are now held in four divisions - Over 50’, Over 60’s, Over 65’s and Over 70’s.

“This enables participation at State level to the many players flocking back to the game they love,” said Graham Doust, Coffs Harbour Golden Oldies.

“Certainly the mind is

willing and enthusiasm makes up for those deficiencies that the body may be experiencing!” he said.

On Monday the Coffs Harbour team faced New England on Phil Hughes Oval at Macksville.

“After a slow start the batting picked up the pace in the middle order.

“The hot and humid conditions made batting in helmets very uncomfortable with several batters having to retire early to escape the heat,” Graham said.

John Leahy scored a

patient 25 before Bruce Lumb (34) and Terry Crossland (24) batted well together and a handy innings from Terry Herbert (17) pushed the score along to 158 off the 40 allowed overs.

Unfortunately the batting lineup could not replicate the previous day’s form with the accurate Sydney attack and excellent fielding smothering any chance of a large score.

Cuthbert Berenger cleaned up the lower order taking 4-8 off 6 overs and three other wickets were accounted for by sharp fielding resulting in run outs.

SWIMMING North Coast sent a big team of swimmers to Sydney to compete over the six days of the Championships.

Ten more swimmers were entered than last season, with more events and clubs involved.

The swimmers won five medals and 71 top ten placings were achieved.

OUR annual Royal Tar competition was completed on 25 January and it went right down to the wire.

There were two unbeaten teams going into the last round and there were no four game winners when they

finished. Covid again reared its ugly head with a sub needed for one side.

Again a big thank you to all the people who filled in and kept the competition going.

The winners were, drum roll: O Smith, B Blair and G Tierney with 3 wins and 41 ends.

Second place went to G Porter, K Porter and C Davis (who filled in for Jock) who had a fall during the week.

He broke some ribs, took some bark off and spent five days in Coffs hospital, but it’s hard to keep a good man down as he was there on the night supporting his side.

They had three wins and 40 ends so they were very close in the end.

Third place went to M Ellison, P (swinging) Dawe and Bonzi Coughlin with 3 wins and 37 ends.

Claim to enforce squatter’s rights TIM is part of a wealthy family and has inherited a number of properties from various family members over the years.

Tim had regularly moved up and down the coast as a younger man and later in life, settled in a small seaside township.

Tim had forgotten about a large parcel of vacant land that he inherited 25 years ago.

Next to Tim’s vacant land, a conscientious and thrifty developer, ABC Villages Pty Ltd, began to establish a golf course and residential complex.

Shortly after construction began, ABC Villages used Tim’s neighboring land as an access route and a place to store plant and equipment.

15 years pass since the establishment of the golf course and residential complex and sadly, Tim has been diagnosed with cancer.

Tim decides to organise his estate planning and as part of the process, becomes aware of the vacant land and begins to make enquiries regarding its value.

His search leads him to ABC Villages.

Tim asks ABC Villages to vacate the property.

ABC Villages commence legal action against Tim, claiming ownership under “adverse possession”, also known as squatter’s rights, on the basis that they had occupied the land for more than the statutory time limit of 12 continuous years, and could demonstrate its use and possession of the land.

However, during proceedings many locals come out to support Tim. They give evidence that they also regularly access and use the land for dog walking, motorbike riding, bonfires and general recreation activities.

The Court finds that Tim’s land was in fact accessed and used by numerous people for a variety of activities and as the property was not fenced or gated, that ABC Villages did not have “exclusive possession”.

The Court rules ABC Villages was not able to establish the essential requirements of adverse possession and dismisses ABC Village’s application.

Students return to face to face learning TEACHERS welcomed students back into classrooms across the state on Tuesday, with vaccinations, rapid antigen testing and mask wearing to play a key role in limiting the spread of the virus and keeping school communities safe.

Premier Dominic Perottet said this was an exciting day for students, and parents and carers can be assured that a wealth of COVID safe measures are in place to ensure minimal disruption to the 2022 school year.

“The best place for students to learn is at school and getting our young people back to face to face learning is an important part of the plan to live with the virus,” Mr Perrottet said.

“We have worked hard to ensure that every

school is a safe environment for students, teachers and school staff.

“We have distributed 8.6 million rapid antigen test (RAT) kits to all schools to ensure that students and staff are able to test for the virus twice a week for the first two weeks of term.

“RAT kits have also been distributed to all early childhood education centres so that educators are able to undertake surveillance testing for COVID-19 twice a week.”

Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said she was thrilled to see students walk through school gates and welcomed back to the classroom by their teachers.

“Teachers and students put in an enormous effort last year while they were learning from home, however we know that being at school

Group 2 Rugby League veteran referee Nathan Grace highlighted the need for more referees for the upcoming season.

Grace said policies in place would hopefully help keep referees in the game.

“Once it starts getting a bit personal that’s where people are walking away, hopefully with the implementation of the tough love policies in place that will help retain some of the referees.”

Anyone interested in becoming a Group 2 referee is encouraged to register online for a Foundation 1 Referee course for new and beginning referees, where they can complete E-Learning modules.

Face to face workshops will be held on Saturday, 20 February in Coffs Harbour and Saturday, 6 March in Macksville.

GROUP 2 Rugby League have put the call out for referees as they face a shortage of officials heading into the 2022 season.

The addition of three teams with the Nambucca Roosters, Orara Valley Axemen and Sawtell Panthers all returning for the upcoming season means more referees will be needed to officiate games with nine clubs to compete in 2022 after six last season.

Book Clubs are, of course, simply an excuse to eat cheese, sip wine, and pretend you've read the allocated book, when what you've really done is skim through the plot and main characters on SparkNotes.

It all sounds valid, though, so maybe you will get away with pretending to have taken a sudden interest in being a literary critic.

The same could go for your husband. If he has always shown an interest in drawing, then this could be legitimate.

If, however, the closest he has come to art appreciation is helping you hang the pictures in your home, then he may be attending for an entirely different reason.

Perhaps you could express your genuine curiosity in his new hobby and ask to see his sketches.

You will then know what you are up against.

You could always suggest that you will be his muse.

“With all these measures in place, we’re confident that students will be able to return to the activities they love while staying COVID safe,” Ms Mitchell said.

Have you ever joined a pub trivia team where one person is busy writing down the answer while you’re still repeating the question in your head? Sure it might be good for your points count but hardly good as a means to show off your own knowledge of ’90s pop groups. The Chase Australia was made in an effort to give everyone else a chance to prove their worth while the “chasers” – in this case, trivia queen Anne Hegerty – start the game with a handicap and try to catch up to the rest. Andrew O’Keefe plays quizmaster.

Who could forget the cult series Lost? As possibly one of the best TV series ever made, it’s only natural there will be other shows that copy its mysterious, sci-fi flavour. Melbourne-made series La Brea, premiering tonight, leans heavily into the sci-fi, while also indulging in a wallop of disaster drama. When an enormous sinkhole suddenly opens up in Los Angeles, hundreds of people fall into an unexplainable primeval world. Expect a raft of predictable dialogue as the Harris family are separated and must find a way to be reunited. Fortuitously, Gavin (Eoin Macken) discovers the apparitions that have haunted him for yonks might hold the key to bringing his family home.
