IN a first world country like Australia it is reasonable to expect in most areas you would have sufficient mobile phone coverage to go about your business and to call for help in an emergency.

For residents in Salamander Estate, Nambucca Heads, this expectation is not being met and they say their phone services are more like those in a third world country.

Last week a group of angry Salamander Estate locals spoke to News Of The Area about an issue they say is putting lives at risk.

Mr Peter O’Neil detailed a problem evident in this part of town for at least ten to twelve years.

Mr O’Neil said, “If you want to make a call or a text you have to come out of the house to get a signal.

In September this year the issue became critical when Mr O’Neil’s elderly mother Jean required urgent medical attention.

When Ambulance Officers attempted to make calls from inside her house they were unable to.

widespread.

Jamie, an Assistant in Nursing, was on the scene when paramedics attended to Mrs O’Neil.

“The Paramedics were aghast when I advised they would have to go outside to use their phones and commented to me that this was an unacceptable safety issue,” Jamie said.

As well as public safety the issue of poor phone reception impacts on the privacy of many Salamander Estate residents.

Jamie went on to say that, “I

will often have to stand on my front porch or on the footpath to be able to use my mobile phone and that makes it very hard to discuss confidential matters.”

Peter O’Neil has persistently sought a solution from major service providers and the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman, all to no avail.

Peter said, “It is now time to galvanise the community and different levels of Government to do something about this infrastructure problem.”

Mr Peter Sobey, an Independent Candidate in the upcoming council elections, paid a visit to the O’Neil’s home to lend his voice in support of getting this issue fixed.

Mr Sobey advised that, “My understanding is that it is a Federal issue however councils may be able to lobby on infrastructure matters.”

Mr Sobey said he has similar issues where he lives in Valla Rural, with the problem only able to be rectified at great personal expense.

News Of The Area can confirm the Nambucca Valley Council has

detailed the issue to the Federal Member for Cowper who is yet to provide a specific response.

Mr Steven Daily, a local Taxi Driver, commented that, “This problem also exists in many pockets around Nambucca Heads including the beaches and in some places the phone signal makes it impossible for customers to pay their taxi fare by credit card.”

Mr O’Neil and his neighbours hope going public about this will help get something done.

Run Beyond Project helping kids to set goals

NAMBUCCA Heads High School (NHHS) has a team of dedicated teachers coaching and assisting students in the Run Beyond Project.

The Run Beyond Project, a registered charity, ‘Uses running as a medium to help students facing adversity; learn goal setting, commitment, resilience and to feel a sense of belonging’.

The founder of the project, Mr David Crinti, began the project when he was working as part of the Refugee Transition Program.

This program focused on the transitioning of refugee students into the high school environment.

Mr Crinti convinced five of his Chester Hill High School students with refugee backgrounds to stretch themselves beyond what they thought was possible and train for a half-marathon.

This has become a program that is used by committed teachers throughout Australia to help students develop skills in their lives that will help them excel, utilising what they gain beyond running.

Teachers involved in the project from Nambucca Heads High School, Michelle Versluys, Chris Barnes and Abbie Parkes, train with the students to help them achieve their goals.

Ms Versluys explains that the program focuses on “resilience, commitment and goal setting”.

“The idea is they are embedded in the program to do with running but then the kids take those with them through life, and apply them to school, relationships and everything in life.

“They learn these core values.

“They can have great conversations with us now around those.”

Students and teachers complete half an hour of theory each week before they set off on their group run.

There is criteria set to identify those students that would most benefit from the program, and they are then invited to attend.

According to Ms Versluys other students are still welcome to become involved, perhaps in a mentoring role.

Currently there are two students, Riley Nowland (Year 12) and Ryley Smith (Year 9), previously involved in the project, who act as mentors for the other runners.

Community member Karlie Swanson, a local elite runner, is also a mentor in the program.

News Of The Area asked mentor Riley Nowland, who recently completed Year 12, how the program has helped him.

Riley said, “I have been running for quite a while now, and it definitely helps me to feel good.

“My running times have improved since I was invited into the program.”

Students incur no cost, and are provided with a t-shirt, vest, new shoes and a buff.

2021 is the third year that NHHS has run the project, and the teachers and students involved are all enthusiastic and passionate about its success.

The finale for 2021 will be a 8 km run around the Coffs Creek Loop with Orara High School who have started the Project in 2021.

The Run Beyond Project can only run through fundraising and donations, and a major fundraising drive is held in December each year.

(LGNSW) President Linda Scott said this Bill is an improvement on the previous laws that made the enforcement of compliance almost impossible.

“These abandoned trolleys pose a very real risk to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, while others clog our local waterways,” said Clr Scott.

“The widely used ‘trolley tracker’ app has taken reports of more than three million abandoned trolleys since it was launched, so that gives an idea of the scope of the recovery problem, and of the cost to councils and ratepayers.”

In the new rules there will be a threehour collection time limit on trolleys, vehicles or items that cause a safety hazard, and seven-day limit for other items.

Fines will be applied to items left over the time limit.

“Essentially these new rules put the onus right back on the owners to ensure their property is not abandoned throughout our communities.

“They’ll need to remove these items - which go beyond shopping trolleys to include items such as unregistered vehicles - within an appropriate time frame or face harsher penalties, more rapid impounding action and enforcement orders,” Clr Scott said.

Christmas cheer from the Lions

IT has been a year of trials and tribulations with the impact of COVID regulations, cases close by, and lockdowns.

But yet again the Nambucca Heads Lions Club has pulled out their wonderful Christmas decorations to brighten up Bowra and Ridge Streets in Nambucca Heads with cheer.

Walking down the street News Of The Area could hear the little children exclaiming, “Oh look mummy, there’s a Santa, and a kangaroo!”

The street has been livened up with the glimmer of tinsel expertly tied up to withstand what is a windy time in the Valley, and that lovely holiday feeling is starting to seep into the atmosphere.

The band of volunteers worked throughout the morning of Sunday 28

November to ensure that the decorations were up for the last week of November 2021.

One of the Santas, being chased by a dog eager to score a present, is happily climbing up the wall on the edge of Earthbound Bowra cafe where it is placed each year.

As a way of expressing thanks for the now glittering town centre, Earthbound Bowra offered the Lions volunteers complimentary cups of coffee.

There was a happy crew of Santa’s helpers sitting back and relaxing after a well earned break.

The Lions Club said, “We’ve been setting these up for about four years now.

“We do it to lighten up the area and appreciate all the help we receive throughout the year and would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and thank you all for your amazing support.”

Community feedback for Skatepark proposal

By Andrea FERRARI A COMMUNITY survey has been released by Nambucca Valley Council for Scotts Head Skate and Recreation Park which seeks feedback on the proposal.

Deborah McCabe, Project Administration Support Officer at Council, said the survey has been designed to ensure feedback informs Council on the needs of the community, in particular the youth, and provides a safe healthy environment that can be enjoyed by all.

“Submitted survey data will assist Council staff to determine the preferred site for the proposed Skate and Recreation Park and the size of a skate park that can be reasonably accommodated on that site. “ To complete the survey log on to www.nambucca.nsw.gov. au and follow the prompts.

Access is also available by using a QR code, or by visiting the Macksville or Nambucca Heads Library to complete the survey online or by hand using the paper version of the survey available from the counter.

The survey closes on 14 January 2022.

“We have seven possible site locations in Scotts Head, the survey discusses these and asks survey participants

to rank their preferences as well as one site where they definitely do not want the proposed skate park located,” Deborah said.

Nambucca Valley resident John Gilroy told News Of The Area, “I’m not opposed to a skatepark - my concerns are related to the lack of community consultation.

“Council’s Infrastructure Manager Matt Leibrandt had previously prepared a report to Council proposing to construct a skatepark near the Bowling Club, on the back of a superficial attempt to engage the community.

“In addition, Council’s staff were proposing to approve this development under Division 12 and section 65 of the State Environmental Planning Policy.

“This allows Council to develop without consent,

even though Council’s Local Environmental Plan specifies that development on land zoned RE1 Public Recreation can only be undertaken with consent i.e. Council approval.

“Thankfully the Mayor, Cr Hoban identified that an environmental impact assessment had not been undertaken, nor were the community adequately engaged.

“Accordingly, I appreciate the decision of Council to undertake this community engagement, as this provides the community with a voice to determine where to construct the skate facility and have input into its design.

“With regard to the original site, which buttresses the Bowling Club, referred to as sites 1 and 2 in the current survey, there are no toilets or garbage bins located in this

location.

“Also, there is no parking (excluding the Bowling Club) and Adin Street is very narrow at this point, which would mean cars would have to pass in single file if other cars were parked on both sides of the road.

“With regard to the trees and scrubs, kids already damage the natural environment by sliding down the embankment on cardboard, and the site also floods as it is a retention basin.

“In my personal view, this site is not suited to constructing a skatepark.

“That said, this needs to be a decision of the Scotts Head community,” said John.

Crystal Vowels, a Scotts Head mum of Avalon (12) and Sandon (10) keenly supports her children’s enthusiasm for skateboarding, a sport they now compete in, locally.

“In Scotts we are fortunate to have a lot of natural activities on our doorstep, but surf can be fickle and a skate park would be an awesome alternative physical activity for the kids in the community.

“Skating is an extremely physical and technical activity and caters to all ages and abilities.

“Skating and surfing are generally a compatible sport so in a surfing community a skate park would be a great asset.

“A skate park in Scotts would give kids of all ages a community meeting place to get out and be active.”

“I’d like a skate park in Scotts so I can practice skating without having to go to Macksville or Coffs Harbour.

“You can’t skate in the rain and sometimes we get to Macksville or Coffs and the skatepark is wet,” Avalon commented.

Sandon’s reply for News Of The Area readers is, “It would give us somewhere to skate instead of skating around the streets and on the road in Scotts Head.

“It’s a good way to be active and is in walking distance from home.”

Local skateboarder Solomon Hill told News Of The Area, “I think that skating is such a great way to challenge yourself whilst still having fun.

“Lots of people find they run out of things to do while the surf is flat in Scotts Head, and I think that building a skate park is a great way to provide people with a place to have fun and make friends.”

Dr Emma Gentle, President of the Scotts Head Community Group, told News Of The Area, “The skate park proposal has been in the making for some time.

“Recently, the Scotts Head Community Group completed a survey with over 200 responses where the community saw a skatepark as a much-needed facility for the young people living in and around Scotts Head.”

Woodstock in the Valley bands booked

WOODSTOCK in the Valley 2022 band list has been announced and final stages of organisation are well underway to ensure everyone has the best festival ever.

Creedence and Friends, Steve Edmunds, Not Real Young, Leeroy and the Rats and a whole lot more bands will be performing – see the poster for the latest confirmations.

Diane Potter, Project Manager with Nambucca Rotary told News Of The Area some of the booked highlights.

“Get out the 60s costumes and enter the best dressed competition,” she said.

“Book your spot on the walk-up stage.

“Buskers will be encouraged to set up in designated areas around the region over the weeks preceding the festival and the public will be asked to vote for their favourite artists.

“The top artists, as voted for by the public, will perform in a final at the festival and judging will be carried out by a VIP – to be confirmed.”

The prize will include a slot on the main stage at the festival.

Market stall holders are encouraged to book their spot by going to the website.

Visitors are also able to take part in workshops such as candle making, tie dying, Yoga and music improvisation.

LOCAL Utungun farmer Mick Green is recovering in hospital having spent three days in ICU following a motorbike accident last weekend, 27 November.

Matilda Brown, daughter of the Brown family farm owners where Mick is the manager, has launched a GoFundMe to support Mick’s family, his rehab and physio as he recovers.

"Our hope for the fundraiser is that Mick can recover without the stress of finances while he is on the mend.

“Our family is doing what they can to help the Greens in this difficult time, but Mick

has a long road of recovery ahead and will be out of work for over six months,” Matilda told News Of The Area.

“Funds raised will go towards Mick’s rehab expenses and help support his wife Deb and their four children, over the course of his recovery until he can go back to work.

“Right now, he can't even walk and anyone who knows Mick will understand what a predicament this whole situation has put him in.

“Mick is loved by many, so I know the Macksville and Nambucca community won't think twice about helping.

“They've been an amazing support so far."

Mick has incurred some serious injuries and right now he is in ICU, lucky to be alive.

Bowraville Christmas Markets Police on the Streets

BOWRAVILLE is holding Christmas Markets on 11 December.

The markets will take place on the eastern side of High Street, Bowraville, in and around the Community Hall.

Stalls will consist of homegrown local produce, and delicacies including fruit, vegetables and seasonal herbs.

There will be soaps, candles, greeting cards, glassware, jewellery, and bauble Christmas tree hangings on sale.

For those with a sweet tooth gluten free cakes, jams will be on offer, as well as chutneys, fresh eggs, toys and plants.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to welcome locals and visitors alike to our beautiful area and surroundings,” said a spokesperson for Visit Bowraville.

The Phoenix Gallery and Café and the Bowraville Hotel will be open for coffee and meals, and a few well-known food truck vendors will be in attendance.

Come along and make a day of the festivities, buy some Christmas presents, and listen

to the street buskers.

There will be about 30 stalls selling from 9:00 am – 11:00 pm.

Bowraville Markets supports the Pioneer Community Centre managed

Nippers unstoppable, even with foam and low visibility q

ON Sunday 28 November the Nambucca Nippers headed down to the beach, excited to be attending their third session of the season after the previous week was cancelled owing to heavy rainfall.

There was also excitement about the fittings and new ownership of the Nippers t-shirts for the season, sponsored by Valla Real Estate, and the group photo for the season.

Easy parking spots are always taken up early and quickly, with those arriving a little later taking parking spaces heading up the hill.

Walking down to the beach, with Nippers excited about the 1.5 hours ahead, everyone was greeted by an unswimmable surf for the session.

and the lack of visibility in the water owing to the recent storms, meant that the beach was closed for swimming.

Nambucca Heads Surf Lifesaver Honi said, “With the foam on the beach we just don’t think it is safe for the kids to go into the water.

“Some will be fine, but some may get ear infections or sore throats, and we just don’t want to risk it.

“Also the visibility in the water is so poor we wouldn’t be able to see if there was a log or something else hidden in the water that the Nippers may run or swim into.

“We have to put safety first.”

Even though the beach was closed for water activities the Nippers still exercised, listened and learnt for the session.

There were games set up on the beach by the adult and teenage volunteers of the

club which created a lot of huff and puff.

Nippers, in their age groups, also spent time observing the Inflatable Rubber Boat (IRB) and Surf Rescue emergency vehicle.

Main Beach closed.

They learnt about the different features and uses of the vehicles.

The next Nippers session is at Main Beach on Sunday 5 December, let’s hope there is no foam and more sun.

1. ON 24/11/21 at about 1:30pm, Police arrested a 38-year-old man at a Nambucca Heads address for breaching an AVO. Whilst in custody at Macksville Police Station the accused man allegedly made threats towards Police.

The accused man was later charged at Coffs Harbour Police Station where he was refused bail to appear before Coffs Harbour Local Court on 25/11/21.

The accused man was subsequently granted bail by the Court to appear before Macksville Local Court on 15/12/21.

2. On 23/11/21 at about 12:14pm Police arrested a 41-year-old man at Nambucca Heads for breaching an AVO and Intimidation following enquiries related to a family dispute involving a 40-yearold man that occurred on 21/11/21.

The accused man was charged at Macksville Police Station where he was refused bail to appear before Kempsey Local Court later the same date.

The accused man was granted bail by the Court to appear before Macksville Local Court on 24/3/22.

3. On 20/11/21 shortly after midnight Emergency Services were alerted to a motor vehicle accident on South Arm Rd, South Arm. A blue Falcon ute had collided with a power pole and fence and caught alight.

No persons were located with the vehicle and appeared to have decamped prior to arrival of emergency services.

The force of the impact resulted in the vehicle wrapping around the pole and breaking in half.

The vehicle was destroyed by fire and the power pole also sustained fire damage.

Police enquiries are continuing.

4. On 24/11/21 shortly after 6:30pm Emergency Services were alerted to a house fire in Hodge St, Macksville.

Luckily no persons were injured however the house sustained major damage.

The fire is not deemed suspicious.

5. On 22/11/21 Police arrested a 24-year-old man following a motor vehicle accident in Wall St, Macksville that occurred shortly after 5:40pm.

The driver is alleged to have collided with a power pole which caused a blackout to neighbouring residents.

The occupants of the vehicle attempted to decamp from the scene however were soon identified.

The male driver was arrested and underwent a breath analysis at Macksville Police Station where he returned a Mid Range PCA of 0.123.

Checks on the driver also revealed his licence was disqualified.

The accused man was advised he would be receiving a Court Attendance Notice for a number of traffic offences following further enquiries.

6. On 21/11/21 at about 12:40am Emergency Services were alerted to a motor vehicle accident on Hyland Park Rd, Hyland Park in which a white 4WD had rolled onto its side.

A 36-year-old male driver and 35-year-old female passenger were able to exit the vehicle.

The woman was conveyed to Coffs Harbour Health Campus with a shoulder injury.

The male driver was arrested after failing a RBT and underwent a breath analysis at Nambucca Heads Police Station where he returned a High Range PCA of 0.162.

The accused man was issued a licence suspension and a Court Attendance Notice to appear before Macksville Local Court on 16/1/22.

7. On 21/11/21 at about 10:30am Police issued a 48-year-old man with an infringement notice for offensive behaviour following enquiries related to an incident in Bowra St, Nambucca Heads the previous day that occurred about 2:30pm.

TAFE NSW Mandates Employee Vaccines

THE NSW Government will maintain measures and increase penalties for noncompliance as it continues to take a precautionary approach to quarantine arrangements for overseas arrivals in line with additional national border security measures by the Australian Government.

Consistent with Commonwealth measures, all travellers arriving in NSW who have been in South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini and Malawi during the 14 day period before their arrival in NSW must enter hotel quarantine for 14 days, irrespective of their vaccination status.

All other overseas travellers must complete a PCR test and isolate for 72 hours at a nominated address or accommodation.

People will only be able to exit isolation at the end of the 72 hour period if they have received a negative result.

After exiting isolation people must complete an additional PCR test on day six after arrival and comply with the NSW Health guidelines for recent fully vaccinated arrivals.

To help protect the community, the NSW Government will increase penalties for non-compliance with the isolation, testing and quarantine requirements to $5,000 for individuals (from $1,000) and $10,000 for corporations (from $5,000).

This will take effect from Wednesday 1 December.

Perrottet said the measures were a necessary precaution to help keep people safe until more was known about the Omicron variant.

“We are well prepared here in NSW but it is important we take the necessary steps to protect the community and adopt measures that will allow us to learn to live with COVID,” Mr Perrottet said.

“We will continue to make any necessary changes as we receive updated information.

Our overriding message, as always, is to continue to get vaccinated. It is still the best way to protect yourself and your family.”

Minister for Health Brad Hazzard said booster shots were still an important part of staying safe.

“If you are eligible for a booster, please make the booking and get the jab. As we continue to reopen and avoid lockdowns, booster shots are our best defence against what can be a deadly virus,” Mr Hazzard said.

“We will continue to monitor ATAGI advice in relation to boosters, and we have a comprehensive promotional campaign in place to remind people of the importance of boosters.

“I would warn anyone who can think they can skip the isolation requirements to think twice – we are taking this new variant incredibly seriously.

“Police and Health officials will be on the front foot to ensure compliance and significant penalties will apply for anyone found to be breaking the rules.”

Berries Australia welcomes PALM reforms

BERRIES Australia welcomed the Australian government announcement of reforms to the current Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) to create a single streamlined program.

The two existing PALM initiatives - the Seasonal Worker Programme (SWP) and the Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS) - will be consolidated and operated under a single, improved PALM scheme.

It will commence in April 2022 and be managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The scheme allows eligible Australian businesses to hire workers from nine Pacific islands and Timor-Leste when there are not enough local workers

available.

Through the PALM scheme, eligible businesses can recruit workers for seasonal jobs for up to nine months or for longer-term roles for between one and three years in unskilled, low-skilled and semi-skilled positions.

Berries Australia Executive Director Rachel Mackenzie said the industry particularly welcomes the streamlining of processes and improved capacity for workers to move more easily between farms to enable an efficient and effective workforce for the sector and maximise worker earnings.

“The industry continues to support strong worker protections underpinned by an active compliance and assurance program,” she said.

“The Pacific Worker scheme has really shown its value to the sector during

the pandemic and the funds workers have been able to send home have supported

Scholarships available APPLICATIONS for Bendigo and Adelaide Bank's 2022 scholarship program to support first-time tertiary students in pursuing their education goals are now open.

Established in 2007, the Bank has now supported 1,158 students, providing more than $10.2 million to help students achieve their study aspirations.

This ongoing investment and breadth of scholarships on offer reflects both the Bank’s commitment to the next generation and to helping build stronger communities.

The Bank offers a range of scholarships up to the value of $5,000 to support students with study and relocation related expenses.

Students pursuing undergraduate degrees and students studying certificate, diploma and associate degree courses are invited to apply.

As one of the leading privately funded scholarship programs in Australia, the Bank’s investment aims to

assist tertiary students to pursue their academic dreams.

ALL Year 12 students will be able to attend their endof-year school celebration following a year of disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard last week granted an exemption to enable all HSC students

to attend their school’s Year 12 formal, dinner, or graduation, regardless of their vaccination status.

“The HSC students of 2021 have had an incredibly tough 18 months, including substantial time without face-to-face teaching, and missing out on seeing friends

and family,” Mr Hazzard said.

“They deserve to be able to party with their friends and enjoy one of the biggest celebrations of their life.”

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said the exemption gives all Year 12 students an opportunity to celebrate with their friends

after their exams.

“I am so happy that all Year 12 students can celebrate with each other at the end of an incredibly turbulent year,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Our Year 12 students have worked so hard and I want to commend them

for the resilience they have displayed.”

The exemption means Year 12 students who have not been vaccinated for COVID-19 will be able to celebrate with the rest of their cohort, if they abide by the public health requirements of the venue

Kyah, a local lad is the young, up and coming chef who presented a pop-up degustation dinner last Tuesday 23 of November to a crowd of lucky guests at River View Island, Tewinga.

Kyah started his career at the V-Wall tavern, then ventured down to Sydney in 2019 to start his second year apprenticeship at the two hatted Icebergs at Bondi Beach.

As each dish was presented, Kyah would take to the stage and provide a description of the dish and where the produce and ingredients were sourced.

Update on further easing of restrictions THE NSW Government has updated the roadmap for easing restrictions after the State reaches the 95 per cent double dose vaccination target or 15 December, whichever comes first.

Adjustments to previous settings scheduled for this milestone include: • Masks will only be required on public transport and planes, at airports, and for indoors front-of-house hospitality staff who are not fully vaccinated (previously all indoors front-of-house hospitality staff regardless of vaccination status).

Masks will be strongly encouraged in settings where you cannot social distance; • No density limits (previously one person per 2sqm); • COVID safety plans will be optional for businesses and will be supported by SafeWork NSW; • QR check-ins will only

be required at high-risk venues including hospitals, aged and disability care facilities, gyms, places of worship, funerals or memorial services, personal services (e.g. hairdressers and beauty salons), limited hospitality settings (including pubs, small bars, registered clubs and nightclubs), and for indoor music festivals with more than 1,000 people; and • Proof of vaccination will no longer be required by Public Health Order for most activities (businesses can still require proof at their own discretion).

With more than 92 per cent of people over 16 now vaccinated ahead of the summer festive season, NSW is continuing to take a responsible and measured approach to reopening.

of immunity across the community, NSW Health is rolling out a booster vaccination program at its clinics to individuals aged 18 and older who received their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine six months or more ago.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the easing of restrictions was only possible because NSW is amongst the highest vaccinated populations in the world and the introduction of the booster shot program.

“We’re leading the world when it comes to vaccinations and that is a tremendous achievement we can all be proud of because it has allowed us to return to normal as quickly and safely as possible,” Mr Perrottet said.

“The easing of these restrictions will allow people to get out and enjoy summer, providing a boost for some of our hardest industries as we do everything we can to ensure

we keep people safe as we learn to live with COVID.” Deputy Premier Paul Toole said the roadmap was a staged and considered approach which ensured Regional NSW was able to welcome back visitors in a COVID safe way.

“Regional NSW is open for business thanks to high vaccination rates right across the state. I’d remind visitors to our beautiful beaches, countryside and outback this summer to be respectful and ensure they are abiding by safety measures, which include wearing masks on public transport, planes and at airports.

Minister for Jobs, Investment and Tourism Stuart Ayres said the updated plans for the next stage of the roadmap was great news for businesses still impacted by the remaining restrictions.

“This is a timely boost for businesses just before the busy Christmas and summer holiday

“If you had your second COVID vaccination jab six months or more ago, you should book a booster right now.

“Don't forget, if you haven’t been vaccinated at all, go and get the jab to protect yourself and your family,” Mr Hazzard said.

“By stepping up for a jab and a booster shot you help protect yourself and everyone around you, including the

elderly, those with underlying health conditions and young children who aren’t yet eligible for vaccinations.

“We will also need to continue to get tested if we develop COVID symptoms, regardless of vaccination status, and continue to follow public health advice.”

The NSW Government will continue to review the roadmap settings and make any appropriate changes based on the current case numbers and vaccination rates.

People aged 18 years and older can receive the Pfizer booster dose at least six months after receiving their second dose of any of the COVID-19 vaccines registered for use in Australia.

Nambucca Heads Island Golf

WITH so much rain, the golf course was extremely soggy and we were unable to allow golf carts on course most of the week.

Some brave and super keen golfers ventured out on all competition days, with significantly reduced player numbers. This week’s featured sponsor was Nambucca Valley Care.

Tuesday 23 November, Neil Duffus (19) was the winner of a small field of 13 players in Medley Stableford with 35 points.

Ball rundown winners were Henny Oldenhove 34, Stephen Kimber 33 and Andrew Johnston 32.

On Wednesday 24 November, the Women held their Pink Charity Day. Although many piked at playing in appalling conditions this morning the 17 brave souls were joined for lunch, drinks and money raising for our annual cancer day by the rest of the tribe. $1,000 was raised on the day with cupcakes, raffles, guessing competitions and the inaugural psychic 4BBB aggregate.

Annie Dorrington from Bayview GC and Linda Piccin were the winners with 17

stableford points. NTP 5th was Sue Brooks in Div1 and Wendy Avery in Div3, Chris Clarke won NTP 18th.

Thursday 25 November again affected by rain, and the “Dolphin Day” Open Medley Stableford was postponed due to the small field of 28 players.

Daniel Wren (17) from Bowraville scored 39 points to win from Graham Watson (9) with 36 points.

NOVEMBER is the last fishing outing for our crew this year.

As you can imagine we had trouble focusing on fishing with the Christmas lunch at the back of our minds.

The Valla Lions Reserve is a great spot to try a variety of fishing techniques.

You can take the easy way and just fish from the pedestrian bridge, you can be a bit more adventurous and wander up and down the banks casting into spots providing safe habitat for the fish or head over the sand dunes to the beach and cast into the surf and battle the drift.

Having set a possible scenario this is what actually happened.

Grey clouds, wind and sleet started the day and it was looking like a combined

morning tea and lunch then heading home early.

However the weather looked to be clearing so the adventurous few put on wet weather gear and waded into the dirty coloured water of Deep Creek.

No one was brave enough to cross the dunes for beach fishing.

Some of the less committed of the group volunteered to stay back under shelter and organise morning tea and lunch.

Surprisingly there were strong bites off the bridge without any luck but it was enough action to keep you interested. You could only fish facing upstream with the strong wind on your back.

Standing ankle deep in the water fishing off the sandbar was the only place to catch fish.

The best efforts came from Greg and Garry who caught a few bream using fly fishing techniques.

Eventually they were both outshone by Michael who fished a little further upstream where he caught the perfect flathead using a hard body lure - time to break for lunch.

Our Christmas celebration lunch was always going to be a treat with a barbeque topped off by a pavlova.

It was also a chance for the group to thank Greg for his organisation each month, Garry and Michael for their technical assistance, John for his secretarial skills and Bruce for publicity.

It was appreciated that the U3A President Paul Cole joined us for our early Christmas celebration.

The fishing group now takes a break until February.

When we reconvene I’m sure there will be exaggerated stories of fishing achievements over the holiday period with little evidence to back them up.

As a result organisers changed this to a single Stableford.

Whilst there was water laying in parts, playing conditions were still good and 30+ people enjoyed their day out.

Winner on the day was Jim Katsoolis with 42 points and Karl Cooper runner up with 40.

Nearest the pins went to Brad Fortescue (A grade) and Bob Lindsay (C) on the 4th with Mike Simpson (A) and Mick Trisley (C) on the 18th.

There were no straight shooters in B grade.

The ladies competition and mid week competition were washed out.

Saturday 4 December as well as the usual Medal and Spoon Stroke event is also the play off for the championship between previous Medal and Spoon winners.

Sunday 5 of December is the annual Open Day sponsored by Barry McDonald.

IS it wrong that I just don't feel like putting up Christmas decorations this year?

It has been such a weird 12 months and the thought of dragging out the Christmas tree is just too much. I really can't be bothered.

ROBERT’S mother passes away and he is appointed as the executor.

Robert asks a conveyancer to draw-up a contract for the sale of his late mother’s home.

The contract includes a clause to the effect that settlement is to occur either 30 days after the exchange of contracts or 14 days after Robert obtains a grant of probate and becomes the registered proprietor for the purposes of the sale, whichever occurs later.

Michael wishes to purchase the property and after obtaining pest and building reports, pays a 10% deposit of $80,000 and contracts are exchanged.

Robert obtains a grant of probate and he is registered on title.

Michael is advised accordingly and Robert’s conveyancer nominates a date for settlement, being 30 days after the date of exchange.

An error is made in the calculation of the settlement date because the 30 day period was before the 14 day period expired.

Due to problems with his finance, Michael is not ready to settle the matter on the nominated date.

Robert serves a Notice to Complete on Michael, nominating a further date for settlement and claiming default interest in accordance with the contract.

Michael disputes the payment of interest and again refuses to complete the sale.

Robert terminates the contract and seeks to retain Michael’s deposit.

Michael argues that Robert was not willing to complete the matter, due to an incorrect assumption regarding the payment of default interest and on the basis of Robert’s “repudiation”, Michael is entitled to terminate the contract, have his deposit refunded and sue for any damages he had suffered.

The matter proceeds to a hearing and the Court concludes that despite the miscalculation of default interest, Robert was “ready and willing” to complete the sale and rules in his favour allowing him to keep the deposit and obtain additional damages for a reduction of the price of the property on resale.

I ALSO attended the meet the candidates at the showground meeting and was unimpressed with some of the candidates.

The main problem I have is, do we really need politics in local government?

We have enough problems with them in State and Federal politics without bringing them into our local Council.

The last Council election saw a Labor candidate enter Council for the first time in

Council's history.

They also get funding support for their campaign by the political party, making it hard for independents without that support money.

I feel that independent candidates would have the Council and the community interests at the top of their agenda, as they don't have to tow the party line.

Reduced to a Pile of Rubble DEAR News Of The Area,

IF YOU have been down Ridge Street recently you will see that the Small Hall of the Nambucca Community and Arts Centre (NCAC) has been completely demolished.

In its short lifetime it served a multitude of community groups very well and was in excellent condition – it was an attractive hall with a good sized functional kitchen and dedicated storage space for regular users.

It was not an old building, it was only constructed in 1988, yet it is to be replaced by a building with a much smaller kitchen and no dedicated storage space for regular hirers.

We are still uncertain how community lettings of the new Small Hall will be managed into the future.

The funding for the Nambucca Library ReDevelopment Project is coming from Nambucca Valley Council and State and Federal Grants one of which is designated to be directed to ‘Community Roads and Infrastructure’.

Should we be spending ratepayers’ money on the demolition and rebuild of a perfectly good building or, as the grant suggests, on public roads and essential community infrastructure?

There was an alternative architectural plan submitted for the site from a very experienced Sydney company who had won NSW State

offer their clientele.

Coffs Harbour, Urunga and Bellingen already provide free access to computers, printing and photocopying, as part of their inclusive community service delivery.

The standpoint of difference between online services, and a physical Neighbourhood Centre, is their differing focus. Neighbourhood Centres work to build community wellbeing and strength by supporting community connectedness, offering a non-judgemental, inclusive safe space that fosters a sense of community intention, spirit and belonging.

They are autonomous, function independently and act as safety nets for the marginalised and vulnerable, unlike virtual internet sites.

It is the human connection that neighbourhood centres provide that many people need for wellbeing to deal with issues such as social isolation, homelessness, domestic violence, mental health issues, loneliness etc.

The Nambucca Valley is well recognised as a

accolades for their work on the design of libraries. Their plan was to build around our small hall and not demolish it.

These plans were rejected in favour of the Queensland company who are the present architects.

The cost of the project has already doubled from original estimates and, due to the present shortage of building supplies, is likely to escalate further.

Is this good planning and financial management by Nambucca Shire Council?

Many of us believe the money could be better spent.

The majority of submissions from residents sent to council were opposed to the present architectural plans for the NCAC site but they were completely ignored.

It's election day tomorrow (Saturday).

This could be one of the issues to be considered before you vote.

We need a new team of councillors who genuinely listen to the views of the community.

This project is a disappointing use of public money and the overwhelming views of residents have not been seriously considered at any stage of the development.

Nambucca Valley Council and our councillors should take more account of public opinion.

They should be open to genuine consultation

socially disadvantaged area with high numbers of people struggling to survive on disability pensions, single parent benefits, aged care pensions etc.

Urunga employs a suicide worker.

Statistical data collected from the Census provides the statistics of the Nambucca Valley demographic that details this disadvantage as factual.

Neighbourhood Centres are community based, often employing a trained community worker, and supported by trained volunteers inclusively.

They are non hierarchical, non bureaucratic and user friendly, with a walk in the door approach.

It seems that people fall broadly into two camps at Christmas time.

There are the Christmas zealots who post daily updates of their Elf on a Shelf, have all presents wrapped and under the tree by mid-November, annoy their neighbours with their glowing reindeers and epilepsy-inducing lights, and spend hours decorating their festive faux-snow tree covered with enough plastic to choke a bale of turtles (if nothing else, I have now discovered the collective noun for turtles, so this query has been worthwhile).

Then there are those who cut a branch from the most Christmasy-looking tree in their yard and plonk it in a bucket of water, make a batch of rumballs, do a last-minute shop that they abandon due to whinging kids, and watch Love Actually so they can cry over the blatant sexism and misogyny, yet still enjoy Hugh Grant's goofy dance moves.

I possibly don't need to clarify which of the two groups I fall into, Laurie.

And I think you do too.

Perhaps this year you could consider a themed Christmas to get you in the mood.

You could, for example, go for a plasticfree Christmas and adorn your tree with dried orange segments, cinnamon sticks and pinecones.

Or maybe a pandemic-themed Christmas with a tree decorated with handmade coronavirus balls, Delta-blue tinsel, and a tinfoil hat instead of a star.

I really think, whatever you do, make it a special day for you, Laurie, and try not to be weighed down by expectation.

We do not need to canvas debate for our neighbourhood centre justification, as the statistics speak for themselves. Instead, we simply need to reinstate what we previously had, as a pre-existing legal precedent with restoration over re-application.

We need to match the glaring need with a swift, politically effective restoration process that includes a social justice focus, that genuinely delivers personal, user friendly services to the disenfranchised and disadvantaged of this community, for the wellbeing of the community as a whole.

The penultimate episode of season two of this piercing political drama unfurls tonight, bolstered by excellent performances from its stars Deborah Mailman, Rachel Griffiths and William McInnes. At a short and sharp six episodes long, its perhaps enough time for viewers to marinate in the absurdity and selfishness of politics; one can easily imagine certain scenes playing out across the country as political leaders hustle to keep their jobs.

This week, the identity of Alex’s (Mailman, right) troll is finally uncovered, and he’s someone she knows.

Meanwhile, Alex and Rachel (Griffiths) band together to ultimately decide who will be the next PM.

Can a longrunning series be the same when an integral character takes a backseat? This is what fans are wondering as season 19 of the police procedural premieres tonight.

In perhaps a merciful move, the show’s writers appeared to kill off Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon, above) via a massive boat explosion in last season’s finale, planting the seed that the central protagonist’s days were numbered after 18 years. Tonight, in “Blood in the Water”, the team searches for Gibbs after discovering the wreckage of his boat, and find out he was tracking a killer.

By Mick BIRTLES LAST week it looked like the Nambucca Roosters Rugby League Football Club may have missed out on being able to enter the Group 2 competition.

The news was devastating for the newly formed committee and the many players who were hopeful of running on for the centuryold club.

The Roosters Committee are now breathing a sigh of relief as Group 2 has invited them to re-apply to join the 2022 season citing communications issues as being behind the initial bad news.

News Of The Area spoke to the new President of the Nambucca Roosters RLFC, Peter Bellden, and the Club’s recently selected Head Coaches, Warwick Jones and Gary Jarrett about taking the club into 2022.

Peter Bellden said, “We have some great football talent wanting to play for Nambucca and a strong committee so I am confident we will take to the field in good shape for the 2022 season.

“I give full credit to our previous committee who worked tirelessly to get us in a viable financial position so now it’s full steam ahead,”
