NAMBUCCA United Hospital Auxiliary has donated two important pieces of much-needed equipment to Macksville Hospital.

The volunteers, who run the highly successful UHA Bingo at Nambucca RSL Club, donated a $15,000 trauma bed and a $7,500 Ambu aView monitor to Macksville District Hospital.

The Ambu aView, a portable, high-resolution monitor, helps medical staff to see into difficult airways, making it easier for them to care for patients who can’t breathe on their own.

It has been donated to the operating theatre, where it will have a vital role to play in the care of patients who require

The trauma bed, purposebuilt to improve frontline care for seriously ill patients, has been donated to the Emergency Department.

It is also referred to as a ‘smart-bed’ because of the technology involved in its design, which enables patients to be weighed or x-rayed without needing to leave the bed.

Deputy Director of Nursing Donna Kennedy said both pieces of equipment were ‘game changers’ for the hospital.

The monitor is a very welcome addition to the operating theatre and will make a real difference to patient care,” Donna said.

“The trauma-specific bed is the first of its kind for our hospital.

“It is amazing because it is so flexible and adaptable to the needs of individual patients.

“We can’t thank the Nambucca UHA and its Bingo supporters enough for their support, particularly with

such significant pieces of medical equipment that we know will help us continue to improve the care and treatment of our patients.

“They are kind, generous people and we consider ourselves very lucky to have them in our team.”

The RSL Club say the new lease terms include: 1. A rental increase of 95% on the Crown Land sections; including the car park and Anzac Park; 2. Stipulations that the car park must be resurfaced by the Club within 12 months of the lease renewal, to repair sections of damaged pavement.

According to RSL Management there are indications the repair cost could be as high as $1M. The Board and Management team say they are seeking a fair and

reasonable lease, and do not see this current lease as being either of these.

The Board and Management team stated, “The Club needs the support of the community to obtain fair and reasonable lease terms and assistance with payment for upgrade works, reflecting that the lease is over a public car park.”

Robert Hunt, Assistant General Manager Corporate Services, Nambucca Valley Council, said the quoted 95% rental increase was inaccurate.

“The rent payable for the final year of the 25 year lease was $42,000.

“The initial rent was $20,000 in 1996 and has increased by CPI over the last 25 years.

“Council did not seek any rental

reviews under the lease in that time, so as to keep the rent affordable which, had it done so, would likely have increased the quantum of rent payable and not made it such a big jump when we finally did seek a revaluation for the new 21 year lease, in April this year.

“That valuation was conducted independently by a Coffs Harbour firm and came in at $65,000 p.a. - I do not understand how the club arrives at a 95% increase,” he said.

Mr Hunt said Council had previously made an offer to the Club to obtain another independent rental valuation and if lower, the two parties could split the difference.

“To our knowledge that offer has yet to be taken up by the Club,” Mr

Hunt said.

According to Mr Hunt, when the RSL Club constructed its extension, one of the conditions of consent of the development approval was to supply another 137 car parking spaces somewhere in Nambucca.

“Given its proximity to the Club, it was more favourable for the Club to use the adjacent Crown Land managed by Council to construct the additional car park spaces and pay an annual lease fee.”

As a condition of consent, the car park was to be built and maintained to specific engineering standards.

Mr Hunt said the RSL Club has failed to maintain those standards, and as such, repairs to the car park

are now necessary.

“The Club has failed to maintain the car park at this standard and therefore Council did not want to lose the opportunity to ensure that, in the next 21 year lease, the car park would be maintained,” said Mr Hunt.

“The proposed lease states that the Club is to have the car park pavement condition tested and assessed by engineers, and a report on its remediation, in the first 12 months of the new lease.

“It is then to provide a further report to Council identifying a staged project plan to conduct the upgrade works over the next 20 years and identify the year of each stage.

“The works did not have to be completed in the first 12 months.”

FALLING in love with the local coastline and beaches has been easy for Nambucca Heads artist Keir Jamieson.

Working mainly in acrylics, Keir will present at the Stringer Gallery throughout January a glorious exhibition of her close investigation of Nambucca beaches.

Her paintings reveal a rich quality in the layering of colour and careful observation of nature.

Collagraph prints will also be displayed.

Reflecting on what inspires her, Keir said, “We have many beautiful beaches so close to us.

“Like many people who live here, I’ve enjoyed taking regular walks with my family and friends, to unwind, to take in the fresh air and a swim is good. “We have living art all around us and to share my love of beautiful creation is something I really enjoy.”

Keir mentioned while discovering more about her art practice that she is amazed at the variety of colour in the environment and the way light will hit objects at different angles.

She particularly loves beach colours because they are so fresh.

She attributes her love of colour and careful investigation of it to a wonderful teacher, Beris Woodrow,

Vaccine Clinic Finder best way to book booster HEALTHY North Coast is encouraging community members seeking a booster shot to use the Vaccine Clinic Finder to book ahead, with demand increasing on all COVID-19 vaccines.

“With the Australian Government recently reducing the gap between second dose and booster from six months to five, and the ongoing transmission of COVID-19, we would expect to see an increased demand for booster vaccines across the region,” said Healthy North Coast Chief Executive Officer, Julie Sturgess.

“While there might be a slight mismatch in supply over the next fortnight, due to the recent changes in advice and ordering timeframes, vaccine providers are currently increasing orders to be delivered toward the end of the month.

“Most people who are looking for a booster should be able to book ahead for January.

“The first thing people should do is check their vaccination record on myGov, their COVID-19 Vaccination Dashboard or their MyHealthRecord app to see when their second dose was and then add five months on to that.

“Those who are immunocompromised are also recommended to receive a third primary dose of the COVID-19 vaccine a minimum of two months after their second dose.

“Next step is to use the Vaccine Clinic Finder to find available supply in your region and to book ahead.

“It's to be expected, though, that supply may vary from provider to provider, as demand varies day-by-day as well.”

Ms Sturgess said regardless of which vaccine people received in their first two doses, the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines of Pfizer and Moderna were currently preferred over AstraZeneca for the booster dose.

“AstraZeneca is not yet TGA-approved as a booster, but may be used as a booster for those who have had contraindications to mRNA COVID-19 vaccines or had AstraZeneca for their primary course,” she said.

“This is subject to availability in your area, however, and you should speak to your GP about your personal situation.

“It’s always best to consult your local

healthcare provider if you are unsure about which option is best for you.

“I’m sure North Coast residents also join me in thanking our GPs, pharmacy staff, Aboriginal medical services staff and other primary health care providers who have done an incredible job for so many months to ensure our community is as safe as possible from the worst of COVID. “Thanks to them and the North Coast community, our vaccination rates are up there with the highest in the country.”

All colourful, glittering displays put up are celebrating the close of what has been a huge year of ups and downs for everyone not only in the Nambucca Valley, but throughout NSW, Australia and the globe.

$200 from the Lions club for the best window display of 2021 was the Nambucca Plaza Pharmacy.

The $50 second place prize went to Zeny’s Photo Centre.

Lastly $50 in prize money, for third place, went to Hello World’s window display which was put together by the students from Nambucca Heads Preschool.

The Lions club were very impressed with the effort put in by the young students at the preschool.

The relaxed two-day festival was a celebration of all things great about Bellingen; with a focus on building community, fostering creative expression and highlighting local talent.

No two acts were the same, each bringing their own unique style and musical approach to the stage.

“Events like this are really important for people’s headspace, just to feel normal again and come together to celebrate the talent in their local community,” Ahva said.

For Uncle Martin Ballangarry, the festival was truly a family affair, with his playing group composed almost entirely of immediate family members.

“We really enjoyed ourselves,” Uncle Martin said.

“We have been playing together since the kids were in high school.

“They are all my kids, all six of them.”

there was no panic for Martin and the band.

“We bring family musicians in from every angle,” he said.

“Our bass player pulled out last night, so my other nephew said, ‘It’s okay Uncle I’ll play your songs’.”

“Anyone from the family can join in at any time, and just pick it up and run with it.”

Joining Uncle Martin and the band was ring-in drummer Leon Tussi, who also took to the stage for his own set on Saturday.

“We had Leon join us on the drums,” said Uncle Martin.

“We were honoured to have him, it was just deadly.”

With the event branded a success by organisers and attendees alike, Uncle Martin would like to see more events of the same nature taking place in Bellingen, the Coffs Coast and the Nambucca Valley.

“I have been working with Lauren and Ahva (organisers) on and off, sharing ideas about a festival of this kind.

“This is a great start, and I think it can happen even bigger in the very near future,” he said.

River Sounds to hit Bello Showgrounds “It was a difficult time.

“A huge amount of effort had gone into planning, artist curation, marketing, site planning, plus we’d sold quite a few tickets.

“There was so much work done that would need to be re-done.

“It was pretty heartbreaking to be honest.”

The event originally scheduled for August was postponed to mid-October.

Then the October date was inevitably postponed as Covid continued to be a concern across NSW. The one positive of postponing the event was gaining more time, which allowed Mr Lewis to secure a stellar line-up of artists.

Headlining the event is First Nations artist Danzal Baker aka Baker Boy, and 90s grunge-rock icons Regurgitator.

Baker Boy, a proud Yolngu man from Arnhem Land, is currently one of the biggest artists in Australia.

In 2021, he performed at the AFL Grand Final, was nominated for Triple J Album of the Year, was nominated for NIMA’s Artist of the Year, was the eighth most played artist on Triple J, and released his highly acclaimed debut LP ‘Gela’.

Brisbane natives Regurgitator rose to fame in the late 90s, renowned for powerful live performances showcasing their unique blend of punk, grunge, electro, and pop sounds which saw them grace the stage of most major festivals across the world and pick up a swag of ARIA’s including Album of the Year (1998) for their second LP ‘Unit’.

“I spent a couple of years in my early twenties living in remote parts of Queensland and Northern Territory working as a tour guide.

“This experience gave me a deeper understanding and respect of Indigenous culture and a love for First Nations music.

“I’m still passionate about this 25 years on from my first experiences.

“I really wanted to showcase First Nations artists at River Sounds.

“This led me to securing Baker Boy and Noongar man (Wyndham, East Kimberley WA) Dallas Woods.

“I’m incredibly proud to be bringing these two amazing First Nations artists to Bellingen.

“Before heading bush, my adolescence was spent watching underground bands perform in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley in the early 90s.

“It was here, in tiny, sweaty venues where I discovered Regurgitator, Resin Dogs and later on Butterfingers.

“These bands were some of my favourites growing up.

“They all became huge, and they’re still making fantastic music and touring to this day.

“Triple J and Double J are the soundtracks to my life.

“I’ve always got these stations on in the car or at home, and learn about new music all the time through these radio stations.

“It’s where I first heard some of the other River Sounds artists like Jerome Farah, The Terrys, Adrian Eagle, Teen Jesus & The Jean Teasers and Pinch Points.

“These artists are on the cusp of blowing up. It’s really exciting to have them perform at River Sounds.

“The full line-up is incredibly diverse and features most contemporary genres including punk, psychedelic rock, hip hop, RnB, surf rock, plus an electronic stage featuring some of Australia’s best DJs. “The lineup is a bit like a mini Splendour in the Grass.

“Bellingen has never experienced a festival quite like this one.”

River Sounds opens on Friday, January 14 at 2pm until 11.00pm, followed on Saturday, January 15 from 12pm till 11pm.

There are two stages at the event, both of which are undercover to provide shelter from the rain and sun.

Over the two days 30 acts will perform at the event, and over 120 individual artists.

AFTER two false starts due to Covid, River Sounds festival is finally going ahead over the weekend of January 14-15 at the Bellingen Showground.

The two day contemporary music festival is the largest event to be staged on the NSW Mid North Coast since pre-Covid, and features some of the biggest names in Australian music.

Festival Director Ben Lewis describes the event as being a long held ambition of his, which has been in the pipeline since 2017.

“The idea first came about over a beer with the owner of the Federal Hotel, Michael Sutherland.

“I’ve been booking live music at the Fed for seven years now and have formed a great relationship with Michael over that time.

“Michael and I we’re keen to put on a festival in the car park behind the pub.

“I loved the idea of staging a festival in that space, right in the heart of town.

“Sadly, not everyone agreed the car park was a suitable venue for a two day music event, which ultimately ended our original plan.

“By this stage, the seed had been sown so I decided to push forward on my own to deliver a festival at the Bellingen Showgrounds.

“This was the birth of River Sounds.”

It’s been a turbulent time for River Sounds since the event was first announced in May, 2021. Only four weeks after launching, state wide Covid health restrictions were introduced leaving Mr Lewis with no choice but to postpone the event.

Snake bites prompt reminder about importance of first aid WITH warmer weather creating a potential surge in venomous snake and spider activity, St John Ambulance NSW is reminding people about the importance of first aid.

NSW residents have been issued a warning of a potential surge in venomous snake and spider activity across the state this summer, due to the continued wet and humid weather conditions caused by La Niña.

“Australia has some of the most venomous snakes and spiders in the world,’ says Sarah Lance, CEO, St John Ambulance NSW. “Time is critical when it comes to venomous bites, and they should be treated as a medical emergency.

“That is why we are asking people to brush up on the signs, symptoms and – most importantly – the treatment of snake and

spider bites.”

More than half of deaths caused by snake bites in Australia occur in the home, and with continued wet weather conditions forcing snakes and spiders out of their natural habitat in search of drier areas, it’s expected that sightings within the home will increase.

The most dangerous snake posing a threat to Australians is the eastern brown snake, which causes

a higher number of fatalities than any other snake in Australia.

A MANDATORY Child Safe Scheme, a residential care workers register and development of a child protection audit tool are all among new measures helping to keep NSW children safe, according to a report released on December 17.

Attorney General Mark Speakman said the NSW Government’s annual progress report provides an update on actions in 2021 to implement recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

“Keeping children safe is our absolute priority.

“We have continued to make real progress while

navigating a global pandemic, but there is still more to be done,” Mr Speakman said.

“We will continue to work hard throughout 2022 to protect children and young people, support victims and survivors and hold perpetrators to account for their horrific crimes.”

Key points mentioned in the annual report include: • Introduction of new laws establishing the Child Safe Scheme, a regulatory framework requiring certain NSW child-related organisations to implement Child Safe Standards; • Boosted protection for young people in detention, including

expanding support services, trauma-informed counselling, and embedding a youth-centric and child safe approach in every Youth Justice centre; • A new child protection audit tool to drive continuous improvement in the quality of child protection casework; • Development of a new framework for preventing and responding to problematic and harmful sexual behaviour in children and young people; • Completion of the residential care workers register build.

When released, the register will support agencies

making decisions about the suitability of an individual to provide care to children and young people in residential care; and • The Department of Education continuing to deliver training and resources to improve online safety for children.

“Everyone in our community has a

responsibility to keep children safe.

“The new Child Safe Scheme starting in 2022 will help create safer communities and is a big step forward in protecting our children and young people,” Mr Henskens said.

Local skater kids head to KOBBAS Skatefest

By Andrea FERRARI CRYSTAL Vowels, Scotts Head mum of Avalon, 12 and Sandon, 10, who is passionate about giving her kids the opportunities they seek out, took the kids to Coffs Harbour for the annual KOBBAS Skatefest in early December.

“This was the first skate competition we had attended, and it did not disappoint,” Crystal told News Of The Area.

“We knew there would be some entertaining skaters, having watched the competitors training over the last few weeks at the skatepark, but our minds were blown once we saw the tricks in action with the music pumping and Chalkies Skateshop owner Bevo's

commentary.

“The under-12s kicked the competition off, followed by the 16s wowing everyone in the crowd with their tricks and bravery, but the atmosphere really started buzzing with the open men's division entertaining the crowd and inspiring every young skating competitor there.

“The photos and videos don't do it justice; these skaters are undoubtedly something that needs to be seen to be believed.”

Sandon said, “The Bowl-a-nana was a thrilling competition.

“Big moves were thrown at the crowd as they erupted in cheers.

“It was an amazing experience for spectators and competitors alike.

“As a competitor, I would love to go again.”

“We battled rain, but it came out rad,” Bevo told News Of The Area.

A warmly received event with masses of local and visiting talent, the Skatefest is held in memory of well-loved Coffs Harbour skater Koby Mitchell.

Over 100 participants competed for generous prizes including merchandise, with three going through to win great locally based Youth Creative Skate Grants: Skate, Film & Photography and Arts & Music each worth over $1,000.

$33 million boost for not-for-profits MORE than 400 not-for-profit organisations delivering services and support to the community’s most vulnerable people will share in $33 million to help them enhance their services and meet the needs of clients.

Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Alister Henskens said the NSW Government’s Social Sector Support Fund would provide a financial

boost for organisations who have worked around the clock throughout the pandemic.

“These organisations are delivering critical frontline services and support to vulnerable people and this program will ease financial pressure and help them recover after what’s been an incredibly challenging 18 months,” Mr Henskens said.

“This funding will provide 417 not-for-profits

with between $10,000 and $200,000, so they can continue to deliver critical services to the people who need it most.”

The grants support organisations which did not receive JobSaver or JobSaver Not-For-Profit and are working across child and family services, domestic violence, homelessness, health, disability and animal welfare sectors.

Attorney General and Minister for Prevention of Domestic and Sexual Violence Mark Speakman said critical frontline services experienced greater demand and increased complexity of cases throughout lockdown and this funding will give them a hand-up.

“These funds will help ensure our dedicated frontline organisations are able to recover and continue

their crucial work, including responding to the scourge of domestic abuse and ensuring women and children receive appropriate supports,” Mr Speakman said.

NSW Council of Social Service (NCOSS) CEO Joanna Quilty welcomed the NSW Government’s financial support for not-for-profits through the Social Sector Support Fund.

“The social services sector

has worked so hard to ensure continuity of services in partnership with Government and this funding is recognition of the outstanding work they have done to support people doing it tough,” Ms Quilty said.

SUBMISSIONS are now open for Australians to have their say in a Select House Committee putting big tech under the microscope as it examines toxic material on social media platforms and the dangers this poses to the well-being of Australian children.

The inquiry, which will be chaired by Robertson MP Lucy Wicks, builds on the

world-leading legislation the Morrison Government announced earlier last week to unmask anonymous online trolls Australian.

Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said this inquiry will give organisations and individuals an opportunity to air their concerns, and for big tech to

account for its own conduct.

“Australia has led the world in regulating social media, establishing the world’s first dedicated online safety watchdog in 2015. In June this year we passed the tough new Online Safety Act which will give our eSafety Commissioner even stronger powers to direct the removal of online abuse,” Minister Fletcher said.

“So this inquiry will be a very important opportunity to examine the practices of these companies—and whether more needs to be done.”

Pat Conaghan, Federal Member for Cowper, encouraged Australians to make a submission to the inquiry if they had concerns around the behaviour of big tech.

“Mums and dads across the Mid North Coast are justifiably concerned about whether social media companies are doing enough to keep their kids safe online, myself included,” Mr Conaghan said.

“This Committee wants to hear from the entire community – parents, teachers, small businesses and more – about their

experiences with big tech, and to hear their thoughts on what needs to change.”

SEVEN months ago, if someone had told me I’d be writing for News Of The Area (NOTA), I’d have said “Ya dreamin’!”, but here I am, and what a year it’s been.

My year started with stepping outside of my box, and leaving my job to do the things I love; writing, photography and travel.

For me life suddenly seemed too short to keep putting my dreams on hold.

It was like the decision was made, and NOTA fell into my path.

Interacting with people and writing about their experiences has expanded my world.

My year with NOTA has been exciting, it has opened up new and exceptional ideas, and given me the confidence to put myself out there.

Nambucca Valley people are creative and diverse.

They are passionate in their thinking whether it be about community, culture, the environment or politics.

Many of the stories I’ve covered will remain with me forever, and along the way, I’ve met many who have become friends.

A standout for me was the opening of the foot bridge at E J Biffin Playing Fields, allowing greater access to playing fields for all members of the Croquet Club.

I was also so lucky to reconnect with Uncle Martin Ballangayry, this meant a great deal to me, as Martin was a great friend to my late husband.

Then there was our very own Nambucca Spoonville set up by Sam Flagg and her two girls Molly and Zivah, as a Covid-19 project to get the community involved in an outside activity.

I have met people using their skills to teach, volunteer, and help others.

Groups like the U3A, the Bridge Club, Scotts Head Surf Club, VIEW Club, Nambucca Writers Group, Nambucca Valley Phoenix and the Macksville Breast Cancer Support all do an amazing job for our community.

Since covering the Scotts Head Paddle Board competition I’ve even bought myself a paddle board.

There were environmental issues covered, from pine trees in Scotts Head to rubbish dumping in Stuarts Point, the Valley is full of passionate people who care about their environment.

Celebrating Valley Women was another joy to cover.

Who does not want to help celebrate our exceptional women; volunteers, writers, painters and community radio stars.

Recently I had the pleasure to cover the ‘Wildlife’ Exhibition for artists with disabilities.

The work was colourful and representative of our natural wildlife and environment.

And lastly, I couldn’t end without mentioning Freya Paton, and her 80th Birthday Exhibition.

I was on my way to cover the U3A Registration Day and upon leaving the Macksville RSL carpark, a group of women commented on the dress I was wearing.

I stopped to thank them, and Freya said she was having an exhibition for her birthday.

When I gave her my card, saying I’d love to cover such a story, she was astounded.

Freya’s exhibition was a wonderful experience, the work was exceptional, what a way to celebrate a birthday, it was an event that will stay with me for quite some time.

Whoever said dreams don’t come true, didn’t know what they were talking about.

HAVE you been enjoying Coffs Coast News Of The Area and Nambucca Valley News Of The Area?

Chances are you have and more than likely one of the reasons is because of the range of stories delivered by our reporters and underpinning those is the independent nature of this regional newspaper.

In fact the free press and freedom of speech are part of the core foundations that we hold dear in our democracy.

And is it a coincidence that as social media shares of disinformation move faster than trusted sources of news, that threats to our democracy are also rising?

The 2021 Nobel Peace Prize has been won by two journalists, Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov, in distinct recognition of the role journalism and the free press play as we witness challenges to democracy amidst disinformation.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognised the journalists for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.

The committee stated, “Ms Ressa and Mr Muratov are receiving the Peace Prize for their courageous fight for freedom of expression in the Philippines and Russia.

“At the same time, they are representatives of all journalists who stand up for this ideal in a world in which democracy and freedom of the press face increasingly adverse conditions.”

It is the first time since 1935 that the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to journalists.

Then, at another pivotal time in history when threats to democracy were on the rise, Carl von Ossietzky had written about Hitler’s rearming of Germany.

This year’s winner Maria Ressa makes reference to that time in history in her award speech, available at https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=m1w3rRRBoq8.

It is a must watch for truths about the state of democracy, freedom of the press and the threats to it, including disinformation and the physical threats to those continuing to fight for press freedom — publishers,

news agencies, and journalists.

As the Norwegian Nobel Committee stated, “Free, independent and fact-based journalism serves to protect against abuse of power, lies and war propaganda.

“The Norwegian Nobel Committee is convinced that freedom of expression and freedom of information help to ensure an informed public.

“These rights are crucial prerequisites for democracy and protect against war and conflict,” the Committee said.

“The award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov is intended to underscore the importance of protecting and defending these fundamental rights.

“Without freedom of expression and freedom of the press, it will be difficult to successfully promote fraternity between nations, disarmament and a better world order to succeed in our time.”

So, independent journalism and trusted news sources are vital to our democracy.

And they need your support now more than ever.

Where is our kitchen caddy?

I AM a resident of the Nambucca LGA. I live 22 km out of the town of Bowraville.

I was astonished to read the composting article advertising residents of Nambucca Valley Council to "get your free kitchen caddy".

As we live 22 km out, Nambucca Valley Council does not do a kerbside collection to us at all. What they think we do with our

waste astonishes me.

You would think this initiative would in the first instance offer the caddy to residents who do not benefit from a kerbside collection, rather than the opposite.

We farmers are extremely aware of the environment and how to protect it.

Our neighbours have gone away for three weeks, and they've asked me to water their plants. I thought I would also use the opportunity to take daily swims in their pool, but they have padlocked the gate (I guess as a safety measure).

They've given me their keys in case of an emergency, so I could easily unlock it.

With these high temperatures, it seems like a reasonable thing to have a quick dip after I build up a sweat watering their garden.

A padlock seems to give a pretty clear message as to the status of your role in the neighbour's backyard.

I would assume that they are expecting you to maintain the hedge, water any potted plants, prune stray or dying branches, perhaps give the lawn a quick mow, and top up the bird bath.

The padlock sends a strong signal that they are not expecting you to be languishing in the pool on their inflatable flamingo (pina colada in hand), dragging your toes through the crystal-clear water while the portable speaker blares out the best of 2021's Deep House and Chill Music, and a pool boy named Julio gives you the occasional neck massage and feeds you grapes.

I think they have given you the keys as a form of temptation, and you have been drawn to that temptation like a middleaged woman wearing gardening gloves and nursing some RSI from pulling out one too many weeds in 35-degree heat while the dappled turquoise hue of their inground pool seduces you through the seamless glass pool fence.

What you could do is to accidentally throw a native animal (nothing too major, not a koala, maybe a lizard?) over the pool fence and then you would have an excuse to rescue it from drowning.

You could then legitimately unlock the fence and wade in the cool, calm water until you reach the poor, helpless wretch.

You could then contact your neighbours to let them know you had to use the pool key to save a drowning creature and it would be no trouble to add this duty to your gardening jobs as a lizard (or worse) finding its way into the filter box could be a real issue if left for too long.

Just make sure they don't have any CCTV cameras pointed at the pool, or you're just going to look like a sweaty psycho throwing native fauna into a chlorinated environment.

That's going to be a bad look, Corrine.

Packing the car, perfecting the playlist, selecting the snacks, and mapping the route to stop at as many country bakeries as possible that sell Australia’s best vanilla slice is just part of the magic of a road trip. In tonight’s series return, presenter Heather Ewart looks at how travel by road has evolved – from the beginnings of mass car ownership of the 1950s to the rise of the grey nomads hitting the highway in their caravans.

Heading off from the Oodnadatta Track in South Australia, Ewart shares some of her favourite drives to explore this country’s love affair with the road.

It’s episode two of season eight of the local version of I’m A Celeb, the show that incites schadenfreude (the feeling of satisfaction from another’s misery). A fresh bunch of homegrown celebrities have been taken into the “so-called jungle”. On their first morning in camp, reality is starting to settle in – after a night among snoring campmates, the celebrities have to contend with cold showers, rice and beans, and the long and short drop. It’s not long before the show’s gleeful hosts Chris Brown and Julia Morris turn up with a challenge – the insectinfested Hell Hotel trial.

It’s gloriously gruesome.

By Andrea FERRARI AS SUNDAY 2 January draws near, Ray Stig is excited with the progress of the annual Elly Stig Memorial Golf Day. “Within the short time Ray has had to organise the day, the donations and sponsorships received have been overwhelming,” Raelene Squires, Ray’s daughter, told News Of The Area.

Notably the two stand-out items for the auction are: Julian Wilson’s Red Bull surfboard that he has personally signed - Julian is a successful former Pro surfer and Olympic Team member; and the Sydney City Roosters jersey framed and signed by Legends of the past, including Jack Gibson, Arthur Beetson, Ron Coote, Brad Fittler just to name a few.

“There will be raffles held on the day along with a trading table.

“One hundred enthusiastic golfers have already put their names down, which proves the community are keen for another day, full of laughs and lost golf balls,” said Raelene.
