On Wednesday, 20 October Nambucca RSL Club CEO Wendy Mills handed over the Club’s donation of a $12,400 SOZO machine to Macksville Hospital’s Acting Manager, Community Health, Linda Donnelly, and Annette Heather, Acting Women’s Health Nurse.

The device provides a noninvasive fluid and tissue analysis in cancer patients.

CONCERNED locals, koalas and the ‘Red Rebels’ blocked the main street of Bellingen on the morning of Monday 25 October.

The demonstrators said they wanted to bring attention to the issue of logging in public native forests in the lead up to the COP26 Climate Summit in Glasgow.

John Merkel, spokesperson for the group said, “Thousands of hectares of our nearby public native forests are due to be logged in the next year and we think it’s criminal that forests are being decimated in a climate emergency when we need to be increasing forest cover to draw down carbon.

“Native forests remove carbon dioxide from the air more effectively than anything else on land; they moderate temperature and keep Bellingen’s drinking water clean and they do this best when they're left alone.”

Mr Merkel said, “I grew up in the area, trained locally and worked in the building industry.

“Back when I started, forest harvesting was

Mr Merkel said that local timber workers are being let down by governments because there is no transition plan for them and their communities.

“Governments like to pit timber workers against conservationists, but jobs are lost in what could be a sustainable timber industry every time a truck leaves the area with wood that is turned into cardboard boxes or ‘biofuel’.

“People are being sold the idea that biofuel is some sort of green fuel from scraps, but you would need a five-year plantation cycle to feed it, and the reality is that plantations are on a 30year cycle,” he said.

“Biofuel companies will inevitably need other sources, which means native forests.”

public native forest logging in the Bellingen Shire has grown significantly in recent years, as tensions between government and citizens concerned about deforestation and climate change have intensified.

He said that Bellingen township was only just spared from the Black Summer bushfires and this brought the reality of climate change into the heart of the community.

Mr Merkel said, “The proven answers are already here for new energy sources, and biofuel isn’t one of them.

“Forest blockades like the ones in Kalang and Newry State Forest have been established to stave off further logging incursions in public native forests as community awareness grows around their importance as habitat for native species and as one of the most efficient carbon capture and storage systems, provided by nature itself.”

Reducing the over-representation of First Nations people in custody

North Coast on the vaccination home stretch

NORTH Coast COVID-19 vaccination figures indicate more than 90% of people aged 15 years and over in our region will be fully vaccinated by midNovember.

As travel restrictions ease across NSW from 1 November the region is now better prepared and protected to deal with the expected influx of visitors.

Healthy North Coast Chief Executive Officer Julie Sturgess said the region had made great progress in recent weeks.

“Our first dose coverage is tracking above the national average and is on par with the NSW rate,” Ms Sturgess said.

“There is every reason to believe that those who have had their first jab will also have their second.

“This is a remarkable achievement, but we can’t afford to be complacent.

“There is still more work to be done.

“To truly become a community with immunity we need to ensure that as many people as possible get vaccinated and I would urge anyone still unvaccinated to come forward and book an

appointment through the Vaccine Clinic Finder.”

Healthy North Coast’s latest figures show that first doses across the region are currently at 92% and second doses – meaning fully vaccinated – are at 74%.

“Second dose coverage is still a bit behind the NSW rate, however this is to be expected as the North Coast is playing catch up due to earlier supply constraints,” Ms Sturgess said.

“The good news is that second dose coverage in the LGAs of Byron, Lismore, Clarence Valley, Coffs Harbour and Nambucca has increased by 8% since last week.

Bellingen, Ballina, Kempsey and Richmond Valley increased by 7%.

Tweed, Kyogle and Port Macquarie-Hastings rose by 6%.

“I am pleased to say our communities continue to show strong support for vaccination and are following through with their second dose appointments.”

Ms Sturgess said she wanted to remind parents that COVID vaccines are available for children aged 12-14 years.

National data shows 69% of children in this age

group are vaccinated with their first dose and 34% are vaccinated with two doses.

Regional data is currently not available for this age group.

“With the imminent return of tourism to our region, it is more important than ever for all members of our community to have the opportunity to be vaccinated, as we know the virus will continue to

circulate,” Ms Sturgess said.

“Ahead of this influx of visitors, we are also working with GPs and clinics to help them boost their operational planning and manage the risks.

“I would also urge people to remain vigilant about their personal hygiene and to follow standard safe practices to protect themselves and others as our borders open to interstate

and international travellers.”

MORE than 125 jobs seekers from the Mid North Coast region of NSW will be supported into employment opportunities across agriculture, tourism and hospitality thanks to a $200,000 project under the Australian Government’s Local Recovery Fund.

YEP Careers will deliver the Your Empowered Pathway Starts Here program, which involves a series of career information and industry immersion expos aimed at helping displaced workers, disengaged youth and Indigenous Australians into

jobs in the region’s biggest growth sectors.

Minister for Employment, Workforce, Skills, Small and Family Business, the Hon Stuart Robert MP, said Local Recovery Fund projects are an important part of the Australian Government’s ongoing economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Local Recovery Fund is driving projects just like this one on the Mid North Coast, which support Australian communities by helping people find work and meeting the needs of local employers,” Minister Robert said.

“New South Wales regional communities have been hit hard with recent lockdowns but we’re now opening up and it’s initiatives such as these that will get job seekers back into employment, connect businesses with the staff they desperately need and help communities recover stronger than ever.

“The Local Recovery Fund is an important part of the Australian Government’s $276 million Local Jobs Program and our broader Economic Recovery Plan.”

Pat Conaghan, Federal Member for Cowper, said a

key focus of the activity will be to provide disadvantaged youth with access to industry mentors and online training to support them into a meaningful career.

“Participants will be able to conduct industry site visits to enable them to connect in person with potential employers, which is such a critical part of securing a long-term job,” Mr Conaghan said.

The program will deliver seven career expos with about 100 attendees expected at each session, as well as industry representatives from agriculture, tourism

“These sectors will be crying out for skilled staff as we come out of lockdown and return to life as we knew it and so participants in this project, and those who will employ them, are poised to reap the benefits that come with this demand,” Mr Conaghan said.

Blue Knot Day speaks up about child trauma

By Andrea FERRARI LIVING a positive meaningful life through managing Complex Child Trauma (CCT) was the message in this week’s Blue Knot Foundation Festival of Healing.

Raising awareness for the Blue Knot Foundation’s work to give hope and inspire recovery as a real possibility, Blue Knot Day (28 October) shared online events reflecting

the work the foundation does every day in creating community and giving resources and experiences that can support recovery.

Build a Trauma-Informed Community was the theme for the Festival of Healing, which promotes speaking up and speaking out about child trauma rather than hiding it and staying quiet about it.

A Nambucca Valley local, who wishes to remain anonymous, told News Of The Area, “As a Nambucca Valley local I have directly witnessed violence against women and

children that can often leave a legacy of CCT issues for these children.

“Without direct services sufferers often turn to drugs and alcohol, which can then impact mental health and well-being.

“Blue Knot aims to inform, educate and empower sufferers to learn constructive coping skills instead, and to offer the hope of recovery, to reclaim and create positive lives of purpose and meaning.

AUSTRALIA’S Breast Cancer Awareness Month provides an opportunity for us all to focus on breast cancer and its impact on those affected by the disease in our community.

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among Australian women (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer).

Nambucca Valley breast cancer patients and survivors are supported by the Macksville Hospital Breast Cancer Support Group.

McGrath Breast Care Nurse Carolyn Cross has been delivering support to the Nambucca Valley community

since 2017.

The McGrath foundation recognises that people going through a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment benefit from the support offered from other people and the sharing of experiences.

THE Nambucca River Jockey Club are pleased to advise that the Geoff King Motors sponsored Macksville Cup Meeting will be held at Bowraville Racecourse on 20 November 2021.

SOME sections of the Cowper community have been critical of the response to climate change by Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan.

In a previous article in News Of The Area, the convenor for Voices4Cowper, Gillian Anderson, suggested that Cowper voters wanted a stronger response, to which Mr Conaghan replied that he is concerned about effects of climate change action on Cowper residents.

The Coffs Coast Climate Action Group was happy to receive a reply from Mr Conaghan to a letter they had previously sent him, but also felt that his reply was not strong enough.

Spokesperson for the group, Liisa Rusanen, said, "Cowper deserves a representative with the vision and courage to speak up clearly for action on the climate crisis, for a modern,

In light of negotiations between the Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and the Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce about Australia’s climate change targets, Mr Conaghan has reiterated his position.

He said that whether the public should be told of the exact agreement that was formed within the National Party Room is a decision for Barnaby Joyce.

Mr Conaghan said, “On that topic, I should note that, when you are in the process of protracted negotiations, as the National Party have

that this priority has been deliberately misconstrued by certain groups, based on the fact that he hasn’t emphatically come out in support of the current Net Zero proposition.

He said that wanting more detail on the exact plan to get to Net Zero does not mean that he doesn’t support the need to address the issue, that he doesn’t believe in climate change or that he is a dinosaur now sticking his head in the sand.

“My head is also not in the clouds, spouting rhetoric that I know to be empty when it comes to the nuts and bolts of actual progress,” he said.

THE NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from qualified Aboriginal people to fill 10 regional membership positions on the NSW Aboriginal Fishing Advisory Council (AFAC).

The available positions cover the North Coast, Far North Coast, Far Western, North West, Central, South Western, Northern, Sydney and Central Coast, South Coast and Far South Coast regions of the state.

“AFAC is the Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW’s peak advisory group for Aboriginal peoples’ fishing related interests, providing independent strategic advice on the fishing needs and aspirations of the state’s Aboriginal community,” said Sean Sloan, Deputy Director General, Fisheries.

“It also plays an important role in advising how the broader management measures across sectors stand to impact on Aboriginal peoples’ interests, as well as guidance over funding cultural fishing related projects and business opportunities,” he said.

The EOI process is hoping to attract members with diverse knowledge and experience to address the varied matters that will need focus.

This includes cultural fishing access, and the social and cultural significance of commercial fishing for Aboriginal people.

“The AFAC members also need to have knowledge of and capacity to speak from their local region’s perspective on fisheries related issues,” Mr Sloan said.

“The regional representation ensures inland and coastal issues are considered across all fisheries related interest areas, whether they are wild harvest, aquaculture, or associated fields.”

Mr Sloan also thanked the outgoing AFAC members for their service and dedication in progressing several important initiatives for the Aboriginal fishing community, including the establishment and implementation of the Aboriginal Fishing Trust Fund to support Aboriginal communities to participate in cultural and commercial fishing.

“AFAC plays an important role in embedding Aboriginal cultural values in fisheries policy and management, and I’d like to see the past and current work of AFAC continue to be built on through members who desire to drive positive outcomes for their communities.”

All 14 AFAC members’ three-year terms recently expired.

The maximum term of appointment on AFAC is three years with past members eligible for reappointment.

Ricky Buchanan hopes to be a voice for the community

RICKY Buchanan, a proud Gumbaynggirr man from Bowraville, is running in the Nambucca Valley Council elections in December.

Mr Buchanan is very active across the community, working across many areas to help the Gumbaynggirr community to have a voice and feel supported throughout the Valley and beyond.

His work sees him involved in many different areas.

Currently this includes working in TAFE education teaching Gumbaynggirr language, running a youth leadership program, and working alongside the Roads to Home project with the Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC).

In 2020 Mr Buchanan was awarded the NSW Health Volunteer of the Year award for the Mid North Coast Health District for his work as the Chairperson for the Aboriginal Reference Group at Macksville Hospital.

News Of The Area (NOTA) spoke to Mr Buchanan, asking him why he is running for Councillor this year.

Mr Buchanan said, “A few reasons really.

“I guess one is that I don’t see enough representation of Aboriginal people in positions like that.

“We have Uncle Martin (Ballangarry) but that is one of nine that we have.

“I don’t think that is a high enough representation.

“I’d like it to be more than that.

“Uncle Martin told me that I would be a good person to be on council, he said I’ve got the right kind of thinking for the job.”

NOTA asked Mr Buchanan what it is about him that would make him suitable for Councillor.

He said, “I’m a bit of a people person, I can talk to most people easily.

“I think that is something that is really good for someone going into council.

“Rhonda Hoban has also asked me to run for council, she said she thought I would be good at it.

At just 26-years-old, Mr Buchanan isn’t your average Council candidate.

“A lot of people have mentioned to me that it would be great to see someone in my age bracket in council.

Elly Stig Memorial Golf Day announced

GOLFERS can now sign up to the 28th charitable Elly Stig Memorial Golf Day. Kicking off the year on 2 January, 2022 the annual fundraiser will again be held at the Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club.

Local legend Ray Stig created the day in 1994, after losing his granddaughter Elly to childhood cancer.

To date, the Elly Stig Memorial Golf Day has raised $419000, donated to the Children’s Cancer Institute, for research into Childhood cancer.

“Elly was eleven months old when she passed away from a rare form of Leukemia in 1993, at Prince of Wales Children's Hospital in Randwick,” Raelene Squires, Ray’s daughter, told News Of The Area.

“After Elly passed away from this cruel disease, Dad decided to organise a fundraiser, to raise much needed funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute, into research of children’s cancers.”

To take part in the Golf Day the cost is $25pp, which includes nine holes of golf and a barbeque lunch.

With a four-person Ambrose, hit off is at 7.30am or 10am, with a shotgun start.

The attendance of golfers on the day usually ranges

between 150-180 players.

Much of the fundraising is generated through the Charity Auction.

“Over the years, we have received many items from numerous sporting organisations, businesses offering experiences and very generous donations from individuals in our local community.”

With the date firmly in the diary, the organisers say they are now keenly seeking donations for the auction.

Scholarships for Cowper students still up for grabs

PAT Conaghan, Federal Member for Cowper, has reminded students from regional areas who started university this year that they could still apply for a scholarship worth up to $18,000.

Mr Conaghan said Round 5 of the Australian Government’s Rural and Regional Enterprise

Scholarship (RRES) program has scholarships available for eligible students who commenced study in 2021.

“If you haven’t previously considered what financial support might be available, this is a fantastic opportunity for students across the Mid North Coast region,” Mr Conaghan said.

Commonwealth Banks drops Dollarmite schools program CONSUMER group CHOICE welcomes the announcement by the Commonwealth Bank that it will no longer run the Dollarmites program in schools.

The Commonwealth Bank announcement occurred after the New South Wales Government banned bankrun marketing schemes in classrooms, joining Queensland, Victoria and the ACT in introducing rules to require financial literacy programs to be independent and effective.

First Lap swim vouchers for preschoolers and kindy kids

‘FIRST LAP’, a learn-to-swim voucher program offered by the NSW Government, will be expanded from preschool aged children to include kindergarten kids who missed out on lessons due to COVID restrictions.

Children who are in kindergarten in 2021, or begin kindergarten in 2022, will also now benefit from the voucher program.

“Because of COVID restrictions, our kindy kids have missed a crucial window of being able to develop the

skills they need to stay safe in the water,” NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said.

“It’s really important they don’t miss out, so we’re making sure they can also access the First Lap voucher program now that our pools are back open for lessons.”

The voucher program will run from 1 December 2021 to 30 June 2023.

The First Lap program allows families of eligible children to access a $100 voucher to put towards swimming lessons with an approved provider.

3-6 yr old children can benefit from the initiative.

THERE has been much to celebrate at Nambucca Vocational (NV) College this month.

The latest group have completed their Individual Support Work Ready course with six students receiving employment offers.

The students completed their training course, with work placements at Cedar Place, Riverside Gardens and Autumn Lodge, and were offered employment at these aged care facilities.

These jobs will contribute towards a Certificate III in Individual Support.

NV College’s course is a unique opportunity to get paid, build skills and gain a qualification too.

NV College’s Head Trainer and Assessor Amanda Dooner said, “Our students have expressed how much they enjoyed their hands-on work placement.

“We are very grateful for the support of Cedar Place, Riverside Gardens and Autumn Lodge in making this course possible.”

‘Countryside’, is the title of Evan Cleland’s watercolour exhibition, in which he presents landscapes of Nambucca and beyond.

Many works reveal idyllic country scenes, while others, a wilderness or wild coastline.

Working in watercolour (considered to be the most difficult of mediums), Evan reflects that, “The whole process takes a while.

“You see a scene, you take a photo, draw it up.

“When it comes time for the paint to go on, it can be quick.

“If something goes wrong, pause for a while.

“I used to think that watercolours were sudden death, but you can back out.”

A visit to Evan and his spouse Marie at their home,

“Kaputar National Park is within the Nandewar Range, an outlier of the Great Dividing Range.

“My painting is titled ‘Nandewar Spur’ and is inspired by a photo Marie took when we were there in 2006.

“We were last there in March 2020 just when everything was closing down because of the pandemic.

“The Park then was closed in by mountain fog making the fire devastated vegetation

rather grandly spooky.

“I first noticed the Nandewars and Mount Kaputar in 1953, on a very frosty morning when as a young Jackeroo on a nearby station, we emerged on our horses from the timber belt and saw across the grassy plain the mountains standing, glistening on the horizon and me thinking ‘that must be just what snow looks like’.

“I discovered later that it was indeed snow that had q

WELL, the Government has changed the rules again with more people on the greens but more paperwork to deal with.

The one that concerns us is that masks must be worn in the locker room (masks being an improvement in appearance to some but an inconvenience to many more) so be prepared when you turn up to play.

Now down to the good stuff, bowls!

Wednesday, Friday and Sunday were all well attended though Wednesday was washed out because of rain, a bit of thunder and the real threat of lightning strikes.

Friday was fine but windy though everybody enjoyed themselves on the day.

Saturday dawned fine but you guessed it, windy, for the semi-finals of the Major Minor Pairs.

Ken Rostron and son Adam (Steptoe and Son) 25 defeated Danny Curran and Mark Blackford 9.

In the second match Chris D’Elboux and Joe Franck (the Odd Couple) 22 defeated Alan Cosgrove and Peter (three bowls) Dawe 15.

Sunday was again fine but now very windy (wish that wind would **** ***). A good crowd was on hand to cheer both teams however Ken and Adam, playing terrific draw bowls, were too strong and defeated Chris and Joe 29/1.

The latter had no luck at all with everything they tried being unsuccessful (the Meehan's went hungry that night).

This is the first time a father and son have won this event.

A big thank you to the supporters who turned up for both days to enjoy the games and support the players.

It all starts again next Saturday with the round 1 of the Triples followed by round 2 on Sunday.

Nominations are on the board for both the Mixed Pairs and Mixed Fours so get your names in ASAP to secure a start.

Our traditional Christmas Pairs (or whatever size teams we can field) will be held on 18 December followed by the presentation so start to get a team together for then.

The long awaited President Vs Captain Challenge took place on Saturday 23 October. John Slade and Edward Beaton donated the Shield back in 2003, and it has been hotly contested since then, each

side winning 7 times, the President’s for the last three years. I am pleased to report that the Captain’s team triumphed this year, winning the top 20 scores from each side 714 to 643.

Those in attendance at the presentation enjoyed the customary ‘shout’ from President Geoff Harris.

In the Medley Stableford event of the day, Allan O’Brien (10) still showing good form since playing in our Pennants team, won the Division 1 (scratch to 14) with 39 points from David McBaron (4) from Urunga with 38 points.

In Division 2 (15 to 29), Steve Frost scored 40 points to win from Gary Beggs (19) with 37 points.

Visiting from Waratah, James Howard (21) was the winner of Division 3 (21 – 45) with a top score of 44 points from Michael Farrugia (36) with 39 points.

Vulnerable persons allege unconscionable conduct ROBERT and Helen decide to move closer to their daughter, Diane.

They had a falling out with their other daughter, Mary, several years ago.

Robert and Helen wish to disinherit Mary and Diane tells them that if they purchase their new property in Diane’s name, it will be protected against a possible claim by Mary.

She also says that it will make things easier in terms of the administration of their estates.

Robert and Helen sell their home and purchase their new property in Diane’s name.

Robert is diagnosed with dementia prior to settlement.

Shortly after Robert and Helen move into their new home, they realize that the property is not suitable due to issues with access and the internal stairs.

They talk to Diane about selling the property and relocating.

An argument ensues and Diane says, “I’m not selling. The house is mine. You gave it to me.”

After obtaining legal advice, Robert and Helen commence action in the Supreme Court of New South Wales, seeking orders that the property be transferred into their names for the purposes of sale.

They allege that Diane engaged in unconscionable conduct and plead a “resulting trust” on the basis that they paid the whole of the purchase price.

Diane defends the claim, asserting that the house was gifted to her.

The Court places little weight in Robert’s evidence, due to his mental capacity and notes that there is a “presumption of advancement” to the effect that transactions such as these are deemed to be gifts if there is insufficient evidence to the contrary.

Ultimately, the Court finds that there is insufficient evidence to establish a contrary intention.

However, the Court finds that the gift was to only take effect after Robert and Helen’s death and that they retain a life interest in the property, entitling them to rent-out the property and relocate.

Defeat The Heat Heatwaves and heat related illness are responsible for more deaths than any other type of natural disaster in Australia.

As we move into the summer season it’s vital that we get prepared for longer periods of extreme heat temperatures.

Many groups within our community are particularly at risk and vulnerable when it comes to heatwaves these include: • People over 65 or the very young • People on certain medications • Breastfeeding mothers • Alcohol and drug users • Socially isolated people • People without housing • People with lingering COVID-19 related health issues • Anyone experiencing anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress, or anyone with a medical condition that makes it hard to regulate their body temperature What can we do?

• Have a plan for how you will respond including your pets.

• Prepare your mind by thinking about how hot weather affects your mood and ability to think clearly.

• Make adjustments to our home to keep it cool.

• Check on neighbours, friends and family who might be vulnerable.

• If you go outside, wear light clothes, a hat and sunscreen, and take water.

• If you are wearing a mask, take extra precautions to stay cool.

• Water is the best hydration fluid, much better than drinking lots of tea, soft drinks or coffee.

then you need a starting point, but any suggestion when such a transition should take place, or how it should be implemented, and what it should include, appears to be elusive and a step too far to contemplate for the National Party.

Mr Conaghan was also quoted as saying, “I am all for leading the way to net zero but not to the detriment of regional and rural people. This is why we need to see a clear, determined path of action with proper protections for Australia before we commit to the rest of the world.”

In my humble opinion Mr Conaghan’s response indicates that his expectation is that someone other than himself or the National Party should be doing the work to put forward a policy for the regional and rural areas of Australia.

This leads me to question where have they been and what have they been doing for the last three parliamentary terms, two of which were before Mr Conaghan was elected but the incumbent was still from the National Party?

Why haven’t the Nationals developed a policy for the regional and rural areas of Australia rather than denying and delaying until the country’s government is now in crisis trying to scramble together something at the last minute to offer to the rest of the world and prevent tariffs being implemented by other countries that will be a disaster for regional and rural Australia, the very constituents the Nationals claim to want to protect from the effects of climate change?

Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce says his party won't be "forced into a corner" but this issue has been in the centre of the room for a decade, it would appear the Nationals are forcing themselves into a corner because of their own inaction.

Deputy Nationals leader Mr D Littleproud said recently that more ambitious federal targets were off the table, with the plan presented to the party room containing no reference to a higher 2030 target and that the only details that have been presented to the National Party is for net zero by 2050.

Mr Littleproud’s statements appear to reinforce the perception that the Nationals have done no work on developing a plan or policy for the effects that climate change will have on the regional and rural areas of Australia during the last three terms of government.

The current fiasco resulting from the federal LNP government needing to come up with a position on climate change to present to the world and COP26 in Glasgow does little to provide any level of confidence that any agreement that is reached within the federal LNP coalition will be a durable plan to provide the overarching policy position desperately needed by other levels of government and the private sector in order to drive the transition that is so long overdue.

It appears the state governments will be continuing with plans they have already announced meaning Australia will once again have a disjointed approach to something that is a global problem and should be dealt with under a national plan.

NRL stars to Group 2?

By David WIGLEY FORMER NRL star Greg Inglis will return to play for his childhood club the Macksville Sea Eagles in the 2022 season.

Playing in State of Origin for Queensland and for Australia as an outside back, Inglis represented the

Melbourne Storm from 2005-2010 with whom he won two grand finals and a Clive Churchill Medal.

In November 2009, Inglis won the Golden Boot Award as the world's best player.

Inglis went on to play for the South Sydney Rabbitohs from 2011 to 2019 where they won the

premiership in 2014.

Last year Inglis played for the Warrington Wolves in the UK Superleague before making the decision to return back to his grass roots.

Macksville Sea Eagles Club President Dean Hillery is delighted Inglis and his family made the decision to return home.

“We are absolutely delighted to see Greg return to his hometown and the club where he grew up playing rugby league.

“I played with Greg’s father when we won the Group 2 final in 1995, Greg was a ball boy in our Group 2 grand final at the time, who would have imagined he would go on to achieve such great things and now return to where it began.

“The Sea Eagles are like a big family, nearly all of the players are from the town and grew up playing junior rugby together at Macksville or Bowraville and now stand together in first grade competing in Group 2,” said Dean.

competitions which will encourage former NRL stars to give back to the communities that kickstarted their careers.

The new system includes a Notional Principal Contracts Allowance for former NRL stars to have their points recalculated to a notional value as their return has a positive impact on the club, competition and community.

NSWRL Head of Football Robert Lowrie highlighted an example of a former NRL player returning to his home club under a reduced player points system.

“A prominent example of a local junior incentive would be former Parramatta Eels five-eight Daniel Mortimer, who played almost 150 NRL games including the 2009 Grand Final and is now captaincoach of Orange CYMS,” he said.

“As Daniel came through the junior ranks at CYMS club, he would be considered a zero-point player in recognition of his development.”

Group 2 Rugby League has recently featured former NRL players Clint Greenshields and Danny Wicks who both played in Grafton Ghosts premiership sides.

Group 2 Rugby League has also featured former NRL players throughout the years including Troy Robinson, Mark Carroll, and Brandon Costin.

In addition to the new points system, the fact former NRL players Sam Burgess and Clint Greenshields are coaching the Orara Valley Axemen and Sawtell Panthers respectively next season will no doubt help in potentially attracting former NRL players to play in the competition.
