By Karen GRIBBIN NAMBUCCA Heads will be better protected from coastal erosion with works to start on a new $3.6-million engineered seawall at Main Beach.

On Tuesday Deputy Premier and Regional NSW Minister Paul Toole turned the first sod on the project at Nambucca Heads, a project funded by the Australian and NSW Governments’ Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund.

“This region has already endured bushfires and floods, and the new seawall will help prevent another disaster by protecting the shoreline from being washed away,” Mr Toole said.

In 2009 Nambucca Shire was declared a natural disaster area nine times within the year.

In high tides it is not unusual to have to drive through water from the beach, which has made its way past the seawall and flooded parts of the road, and car park.

REPORTING the passing of beloved local pharmacist John Mills, NOTA printed that a message, ‘Valedice John Mills R.I.P’ had been chalked outside John’s Bowraville pharmacy.

The heartfelt message was actually chalked outside number 29, Bowra Street, Nambucca Heads, where John had owned a pharmacy for 20 years.

Locals have told NOTA, John is very sadly missed, “He was one of the bricks in the foundation of this place,” they said, “a mentor for many”.

WITH the passing of Errol Noble, the Nambucca Valley community has lost a true gentleman, loving family man, highly respected and gifted teacher, exceptional cricketer and a dedicated contributor to the wide spectrum of Valley residents, his friends said this week.

Long-time friend and colleague Peter O’Neill shared some memories and celebrated the achievements of this highlyrespected man.

“Born in 1945, Errol was the second son of Bob and Freda Noble of ‘Ingleside’, Eureka,” said Peter.

“He enjoyed being raised on a dairy farm where his cricketing skills were developed by the encouragement of his family and provision of a half-pitch to practise on.

“He moved from the local, oneteacher school of 20 students to a first year of 400 pupils at Lismore High School.

“Errol was recognised as School Captain and Dux, together with being selected in and captaining the NSW Under-14 school cricket team,” he said.

“In one match in Adelaide he was thrilled to meet cricketing legend Donald Bradman.

“Aged 17 he played for the Northern NSW Emu Colts Team and toured Tasmania with his brother Warren,” said Peter.

From school Errol progressed to study at Wesley College, Sydney University, where he gained a B.Sc, DipEd and played first-grade cricket against the best of that era, including Richie Benaud and Bob Simpson.

Stan Gilchrist described Errol’s batting as “from the same mould as Greg Chappell”.

Errol’s progression to a teaching career was delayed by a National Service call-up for two years, during which time he achieved the rank of Lieutenant.

His first teaching appointment was as maths teacher at Coffs Harbour High School in 1968 and on the back of that he was promoted to head mathematics

teacher at Macksville High School in 1974, a position he kept until 1995.

At Macksville High Errol was highly regarded by students, staff and community.

Maths teacher Moyra Mendham describes Errol as “a scholar and a true gentleman … and inspiring leader and colleague”.

Past Macksville principal Peter O’Neill recalls Errol as the best timetable organiser in his experience, and with Harry Bunton, an exceptional supporter of young cricketers in the competitive high school A-Grade cricket team for many years.

In a school of more than 100 students, they remember Errol establishing order in movement with his famous saying, “stay on the left, you’ll always be right”.

Errol and Jan were married in 1966 and have two daughters Karyn and Alissa – a close-knit and loving family.

Errol also devoted much time to supporting youth in the programs run by the Rotary and Lions Clubs.

In 1996 Errol branched out into self-employment in the finance industry.

In 1997 he cemented his contact with Rotary by joining the Nambucca Heads Rotary Club, holding positions on the Board of Directors every year.

Garry Johnson from Rotary paid tribute to Errol, saying even in his last days he was still helping the club.

In 2004 he was recognised with Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellowship.

Rounding off Errol’s support of youth he served as chairman of judges in a number of local Lion’s Youth of the Year programs, with a highlight of being chairman for a state final in Nambucca.

From 2011 Errol enjoyed wide contact with local students as a casual maths tutor.

Disease threat - MPs descend on Bowraville

POSITIONING farmers so they are ready to manage a possible outbreak of Footand-Mouth or Lumpy Skin Disease had Agriculture Minister Dugald Saunders, Regional NSW Minister Paul Toole and Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey at Ussher and Townley Dairy at Bowraville this week.

The Ussher and Townley Dairy, running 1200 cows, already has FMD signage and a visitor register displayed at their dairy, and on gates and fences.

John Ussher told News Of The Area that “We’ve been promoting our biosecurity plan for the last two years or more, as our dairy is situated right on the roadway we are in a very vulnerable position from visitors coming into our dairy and paddocks without first taking precautions.”

“It is important to understand that visiting farms unannounced puts our farmers’ livelihoods at risk, you need to stay away from farms,” said Melinda Pavey MP. “It’s very important for visitors to contact the farmer before entering the property at all entry points, to reduce the threat of contamination.

“Our top priority is ensuring FMD and LSD never reach our shores, and we’ve been pushing hard for stronger biosecurity measures for all our airports to further reduce the risk of contamination,” Ms Pavey said.

“Farmers can play their part by being alert for warning signs, regularly monitoring livestock and quickly reporting any suspect cases,” said Mr Toole.

“These can be simple measures built into dayto-day operations that will help protect your farm and ultimately, our State.”

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a serious and highly contagious animal disease that affects all cloven-hoofed animals including cattle, sheep, goats, camelids, deer and pigs.

Cloven-hoofed animals are those with divided hooves.

FMD is caused by a virus.

The virus survives in living tissue and in the breath, saliva, urine, and other excretions of infected animals.

It can also survive in contaminated materials

I Love You Week, organised by Valla resident Heidi Lee, is designed to provide a low-cost entry point for people wanting to explore the range of therapies and practices that can heal and enable physical and mental wellbeing.

“Regenerative agriculture is a bit of a buzz word at the moment, and this will be the focus of the film showing and discussion tomorrow evening, Saturday 30 July, at Eungai Hall,” one of the organisers, Ainslie Ashton, local flower farmer and President of the Eungai Hall Committee, told News Of The Area.

BEEKEEPERS around Coffs Harbour are following strict guidelines for a 50-kilometre biosecurity zone, after a new detection of Varroa destructor mites was confirmed, and swiftly dealt with, off Bucca Road, near Nana Glen, on Monday 25 July.

The new emergency order means a 10km eradication, 25km surveillance and 50km biosecurity zone has been set up around the latest infection site.

Steve Fuller, Industry Liaison Officer for the NSW Apiarists Association, whose Bee Service Pollination business serves farms across the Coffs Coast, told News Of The Area, “We need everyone to be diligent; I encourage all farmers to work with the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) … biosecurity is at the heart of this industry.”

Agriculture Minister Dugald Saunders said, “Biosecurity isn’t one person’s responsibility - we all need to work together.

“The DPI staff are continuing their strong surveillance work and have put significant measures in place to stop the spread,” he said.

“Our tracing efforts have led us to this IP after hives were moved earlier this year, prior to the introduction of the state-wide pause on movement,” Mr Saunders said.

“The good news is we can still draw a direct line between every single case so far, which means we have a good handle on the situation.

“Our field officers are working hard to conduct hive inspections with beekeepers right across the State and have connected this incursion to an existing case in the Hunter cluster.”

The bees were humanely euthanized on Monday night.

Speaking with NOTA, Coffs Coast Beekeeper, Glenn Locke, who owns Orara Valley Honey based in Nana Glen is optimistic that with the great efforts of the DPI handling this “minor infestation” quickly and efficiently, there will not be a major outbreak.

“We know where the bees

came from, they haven’t just cropped up randomly, and the actual infestation was minor,” said Glenn.

“There were very low numbers of mites in the hives which have now been destroyed.”

With the DPI tracing, “they can identify any escapees, and have it controlled pretty quickly.”

The strict biosecurity zones are necessary, which means no hives within a 50km radius of the infection site can be moved.

“All 76 of the hives I own, every single hive, is in the Red Zone and technically they could all be destroyed.

“The important thing is that all beekeepers within 50kms of that infection site need to notify the DPI of where their hives currently are … they must do that, so we know where they are, and we can start tracking them.

“This is smack bang in the middle of the blueberry capital of Australia; bees are needed in this area to pollinate the blueberries and other berry fruit and at the moment hives cannot be moved, at all,” said Glenn.

Varroa spreads naturally very slowly but if beekeepers are moving hives around at 110km/h down the freeway it would spread fast, which is why the strict biosecurity and no-move Red Zone is in place.

“It’s still early days,” says Glenn, “but I am optimistic that this will not be a major

outbreak.”

Approximately 5000 honeybee hives are needed for the pollination of blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, avocados and macadamias in Coffs Harbour from now until the end of September, and the DPI is continuing to work closely with industry on the best solutions.

Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh said there would be a significant impact on local produce if we don’t stop Varroa mite in the area.

“The quicker we can get things under control the better, so I’m encouraging farmers and apiarists to please come forward and report the locations of your hives, as it is an invaluable component of our control measures.”

The response plan for the eradication of Varroa mite follows a strategy agreed to by the NSW Government, the Commonwealth and the apiary industry.

Local artists bring Serendipity exhibition to Nexus

I N T E R N AT I O N A L LY acclaimed painter, Ruth Randall-George a resident of Nambucca Heads and Monica Rundle, who lives in Valla, have collaborated with artist friends they met at Sawtell Art Gallery - Jane Hutchins from Coffs Harbour and Jill Hankinson, Mullaway resident - during their first exhibition together.

Serendipity exhibition at the Bellingen’s Nexus Gallery, at the Old Butter Factory, celebrates its opening on Sunday 14 August at 3pm.

The exhibition will open each day from 10am-4pm until 9 September.

Monica, Jane and Jill met during oil painting classes and various workshops at Sawtell Art Gallery in 2009.

In 2017 the three artist friends decided to upgrade and improve their oil painting skills with international artist, Ruth Randall-George.

The four soon became very close friends with the three girls’ individual painting styles evolving under Ruth’s expert tuition.

A few years later, during what had become social painting sessions with four friends, they decided to take their individual painting styles one step further resulting in this exhibition “Serendipity” with something for everyone.

Ruth Randall-George has been drawing and painting most of her life.

She has travelled extensively, living in Malaysia for two years painting and studying the Malaysian culture.

After four years in Houston, Texas, continuing

her art studies, she travelled to England and Canada.

Ruth enjoys painting in different mediums, her first and favourite being oils.

Her work hangs in many private collections throughout Australia, the United States, England and Malaysia.

Ruth now resides in Nambucca Heads close to beautiful rainforest where she gains inspiration for her artwork.

Monica has always enjoyed drawing, and art was her favourite subject at school.

The students received no formal tuition but were given a selection of poster paints and left to their own devices.

However, she spent many happy hours in the art room.

Oil paints are her favourite medium and she enjoys using a limited palette and mixing her own colours.

Monica loves the challenge of painting a variety of subjects, becoming fascinated when a painting starts “talking” to her and a 3D image emerges from a flat surface.

Jane’s love for art began as a young girl when she saw landscape paintings by Albert Namatjira.

When she enrolled in oil painting classes in Central Queensland with a noted artist, Coral Morris, her love for painting in oils rapidly blossomed.

In 2009 Jane joined the Sawtell Art group and attended various workshops and classes where she met up with Monica and Jill.

Jane loves a challenge, to push the boundaries with colour and to capture the character of birds, animals

and landscapes.

Jill’s passion for art took hold in the 1980s when she took classes in acrylics and enjoyed working with this medium for many years.

In 2006, having moved to Coffs, she joined Sawtell Art group where she took classes and workshops using oil paints.

Jill developed a love for

the vibrancy and elasticity of this medium.

This is where she met up with fellow artists Jane and Monica.

Jill describes herself as a

traditional artist trying to be more impressionistic.

Her favourite subjects involve nature - people, animals, birds and plant life.

DESPITE Covid Bellingen Country Women’s Association members have been busy helping others, particularly flood victims, enjoying each other’s company at craft days, learning about environmental

issues, discussing the accommodation crisis and keeping the rooms in good order for the community and health groups that use them.

A couple of highlights have been making and sending knitted and

crocheted rugs to Lismore for the flood appeal and helping buy a washing machine for a preschool in the Northern Rivers that can also be used by the community.

Bellingen women also attended the annual CWA

State Conference at which 100 years of CWA NSW was celebrated.

Besides making craft items for the Sydney Royal Easter Show bags, raising funds from street stalls and mask sales, Bellingen CWA has also sent donations to the Tongan Appeal and State Disaster Fund.

One president, Kaye Guinness, won second place in the State handicraft competition for a lap quilt.

Each year CWA members

focus on learning about specific topics.

This year the flora focus is the Banksia, the fauna species is the Australasian Bittern and the CWA’s Agricultural Foe is the Black Willow.

Annually the association singles out a country on which to focus. This year Latvia has been selected.

On the first Monday of each month Bellingen CWA meets at 9.30am, all are welcome.

Also, Bellingen CWA

invites people to its International Day on Friday 12 August, at which a Latvian lunch will be served as people learn about the people, history, and crafts of the country.

The event begins at 10.30am at the CWA rooms on Church St, cost is $15, with morning tea and lunch provided.

VALLA residents, Anna and Andrew Thompson, took part in a film made by Regional Development Australia Mid North Coast (RDAMNC) looking at the housing pressures on the Mid North Coast.

RDAMNC recently surveyed key workers, business owners and property owners to understand the impacts of housing availability on key workers and businesses on the Mid North Coast.

From these interviews they made a documentary called ‘Our Spaces’ exploring housing opportunities that everyday people in the Mid North Coast have created in their own domestic spaces.

“People shared their stories of huge rent increases, lack of suitable housing in terms of size, location or quality, inability to move from renting to buying because of price increases and needing to rely on the kindness of

friends and family to avoid homelessness,” said Kerry Grace, CEO of RDAMNC. Anna and Andrew Thompson told News Of The Area that before they moved to Valla, they lived in East Gippsland, in regional Victoria, where they shared their house with other families at different times.

“One of the families who stayed with us came because we were dropping our daughter off for a playdate and discovered the whole family in their car because the caravan park had raised their rates, and they had nowhere to go.

“We had teenage children about the same age and a back room with an ensuite, so we offered them a place to stay.

“I just couldn’t leave them to be homeless.”

Sharing their home has been an interesting experience for the couple and their family, who learned how to cook fresh gnocchi from an Italian family, as well as how to negotiate boundaries.

“My advice to someone who is thinking about sharing their house with someone, is to set a review date to check it’s working for both parties, as well as manage expectations around how long you expect the arrangement to continue.

“We’ve found the most difficult thing about these arrangements is the transition part, when they have to move on, so managing expectations is key, as is open and clear communication,” said the Thompsons.

Latest data from the 2021 census confirm housing pressures on the Mid North Coast, with median rents increasing from $270 per week in 2016 to $330 per week in 2021, and 45.7 percent of renters paying more than 30 percent of their income in rent in 2021, compared with just 11.9 percent in 2016 (ABS).

“The responses from people who completed the survey back up those figures with their own personal stories,” said Ms Grace.

A GENERAL meeting is slated for Tuesday 16 August at the Senior Citizens Hall Nambucca Heads to further progress the ever-increasing community enthusiasm, support and passion to reinstate Nambucca Valley's previous Neighbourhood Centre, which closed in 2012, Operated by Nambucca Valley Community Services Council, which is now Lifetime Connect, a large not-for-profit, it closed the centre because of a range of funding changes and a new structure.

“The Nambucca Valley is one of the most socially

disadvantaged regional areas with an over representation of illiteracy rates, domestic violence issues, marginalisation and poverty, homelessness, etc.,” a community spokesperson told News Of The Area.

“Many services are stretched.

“A key role of Neighbourhood Centres is to support community members to have informed choice about services and help to navigate services.

“As families have emerging needs, if they haven't needed to have specific services in the past it can be challenging

knowing what services exist and what best meets your needs,” the spokesperson said.

“A great deal of stress can be ameliorated if people have access to a service, a neighbourhood centre, with an open-door policy, where everyone is welcome.

“These services help connect people with support and have the capacity to save regional areas unnecessary financial expense,” said the spokesperson.

Wow factor at Tree-o Gallery exhibition

TREE-O Gallery opened its 10th Featured Artist Showcase on Saturday 23 July, which was described by Sarah Andersen, Tree-o partner, as a resoundingly successful event, attended and enjoyed by many.

The exhibition welcomes four headlining artists; Nick Warfield, Alf Blakey, David Hooper and Dell Lennox who bring, “ingenious, creative, colourful and incredible pieces with wow factor,” Sarah, who curates the exhibitions, told News Of The Area.

Natural wood sculptor Dell Lennox has always found beauty in wood.

Living rurally between Dorrigo and Ebor, “It’s something I’ve done since I was a child, lugging home bits of wood to make art with,” Dell told NOTA. She describes her passion for what she does through a prize piece which sits in the centre of a table in the middle of the ground floor space of the gallery.

“I like to keep the original look of the wood and extend its life.

“I found this piece of wood in the Bellinger River after the 2019 fire; it came off a big old tree that was burnt … a bloodwood, a big eucalypt.

“All the colours have come through beautifully; it has a special depth to it,” said Dell.

“It’s beautiful to have something come out of the devastation of the fires.”

Dell eyes her woodwork lovingly, then says, “I learned only quite recently you can’t hold on to your pieces; ‘You’ve got to let it go’, Nick Warfield told me.”

Nick is a featured artist in the exhibition whose work emerges from found objects.

“It’s a strange process,” Nick told NOTA who lives with his family in Bowraville.

“It’s subconscious,” likened to an invitation from the found object to reinvent as something else.

“That’s part of the fun,” he said, looking at his Rocking Chair With Mug, which uses an old rocking chair crafted into a kangaroo sculpture.

“You have to be discerning about the cuts.

“The old rocking chair leant itself to the kangaroo,” he said.

David Hooper is a longtime artist originally painting in WA, who has recently moved to Coffs Harbour, where his artistic evolution is being fuelled by the astonishing natural beauty of the Mid North Coast.

works featuring The Promised Land in Bellingen Shire, David said he’s enjoying his current way of working in sets of three paintings.

“The first painting is realism, the second painting of exactly the same subject is in contemporary style and finally, the third and largest painting takes the best elements of the subject into an abstract style.

“I’ve been painting since high school in realism and

contemporary styles and wanted to explore abstract, but I couldn’t work out how to,” he said.

“Then I discovered this three-stage process.”

David has two more sets in the showcase, featuring local beauties Dangar Falls and Diggers Beach.

any new furniture pieces in this Showcase, her creative flair and eye for detail is evident in the combination of artists, selection of pieces and the overall curation of the gallery’s artworks.

The 10th Showcase is on until November and new works will soon replace those sold on opening night.

Nambucca Heads Roosters to honour indigenous culture with special jerseys

THE Nambucca Heads Roosters will celebrate the club’s prominent indigenous culture by wearing a speciallydesigned jersey in their Group 2 Rugby League match against the South Grafton Rebels on Sunday afternoon at Coronation Park.

The Roosters jerseys will feature an indigenous design made by Nambucca Heads resident Denise Buchanan.

Roosters president Peter Bellden explained the background of this weekend’s special game-day

celebrations.

“We were meant to have the day during NAIDOC Week, but the jerseys didn’t arrive,” he said.

“The day will be about acknowledging indigenous culture as it is quite prominent here at the club.

“We have a fair amount of indigenous players, and the jerseys with the indigenous design were made by local artist Denis Buchanan, who is related to some of the players.”

The Roosters president said it would be a special day for the club.

“It’s our last-hope game of

the season, and it's going to be an emotional day as we have been out of the comp for so long,” he said.

“All four grades will be wearing the jersey, and there will be festivities on the day such as a smoking ceremony and Welcome To Country. ”And when the players run onto the field they’re going to have the elders there to bless the players so they won’t have any bad spirits.

“It will be a good way to finish the year, as South Grafton also have a large indigenous contingent, so it will be a special day.”

ANOTHER week gone and more ugly weather, however it didn't interfere too much with the bowls.

Wednesday looked like a no go up until the last minute, but play started on time in very windy conditions only for twelve ends to be played before the heavens opened.

Friday's men’s triples were played in reasonable weather, though the day was tinged with sadness as Billy

Blackford announced his retirement from the game as he can't see too well anymore.

On Saturday I went in the ‘grump-mobile’ to Urunga to watch our members playing in the Sunshine Fours.

The first day saw mixed results, but bright spots Graham ‘the good brother’ Hunt, Peter Meehan, Chris ‘The Wiz’ Brownlie and Rhys ‘The Riddler’ Riddell won all three games and were in the running.

On Sunday the weather

was much better with another three games to be played.

The ‘Riddler’s’ team won two games and ended up running third overall.

A great effort boys.

Better luck next year to all who played.

Sunday mixed bowls had a few travellers playing and some first timers such as Bob ‘Stingray’ Suttons’ family, had a get together on the green.

Monday was Marquis Pairs Day and 22 teams played in typical Nambucca sunshine.

All had a good day and the day's winners Terry ‘The Eel’ Harvey and Terry ‘Wickey’ Snowden went from vinegar winners to top of the class with two very good wins.

On Tuesday we played a Medley Stableford which was won by John Buganey with 37 points and other good scores from Troy Herbert and Denise Paluch with 35 points.

The ball rundown to 32 points on countback.

The Women played their Monthly Medal on Wednesday under threatening skies, and only 22 brave souls took up the challenge of a stroke event.

Winners were: Division 1 (0 to 23) - Dianne O’Leary (17) with 73 net, Division 2 (24 to 30) - Judy Boyle (24) with 73 net, Division 3 (31 to 45) – Kerry Shearer (38) also 73 net.

Gross winners were Dianne O’Leary, Judith Boyle and Lillian Lukins.

The ball rundown to 78 net on countback.

There were insufficient starters on Thursday to form a competition, but it is worth noting that Andrew Blair (21) from Bowraville and Troy Herbert (8) returned score cards with 34 points– very good effort, given the conditions of the day.

Saturday 23 was a Medley Stableford event, with persistent showers all day reducing a promising field to just 31 players.

The wet conditions earlier proved too much for some,

who decided they had drier things to do.

Overall winner was Leslie Mohr (23) with 37 points and runner up was Jeramy Ashman (13) with 35 points.

Other good returned cards from Trevor Peter 33, Stephen McNeil, Joe Street, Anthony Remm (Coffs Harbour) and William Mann all with 32, and those with 31 or better featured in the Ball rundown Next week’s events include the Open Island Challenge series (stroke) on Tuesday, Open Dolphin Day Medley Stableford on Thursday and Men’s 2 Person Ambrose (Keno qualifier) on Saturday.

Robyn and Gillian Buganey, the teacher, for winning with a good percentage of 67.5 per cent and 0.16 masterpoints.

Robyn is now on her way to be a grandmaster, with only 999.84 points to go.

Tying for first place on the day were Stephen and Amber Fox. This week was our monthly Saturday event to celebrate some of our members' birthdays.

The sessions were held at Neil and Ali Tupper’s house.

Before the merriment commenced there was some serious bridge to be played.

The winners, after some serious bridge, were John and Gillian Buganey with a great percentage of 64 per cent and getting rewarded with 0.18 masterpoints.

Second place went to Gayle Keenan and Cynthia Gill with a respectful percentage of 58 per cent and 0.13 masterpoints.

The members who had birthdays this month were Alison, Colin and Gillian.

After the serious bridge, there was some serious fun amongst members, who enjoyed the food and cake provided by members.

Our Club has registered

to play in the New South Wales State Wide Pairs event which is organised by the NSW Bridge Association to be played during the first week of August.

This event involves participating clubs in New South Wales to all play the same boards that are set by the Association.

Unfortunately, the weather predictions proved to be correct and once again, many players were reluctant to brave the elements and the course became barely playable by Thursday.

WE played twice this week but the talk of our small but friendly bridge club was Robyn Jones.

She finished lessons on Tuesday and commenced playing at the club in our Thursday session.

The comprehensive training/ coaching programme that our club provided was a big success, with Robyn winning on her first outing.

Anglicisation chaos LUCCIANO Lombardi was born in Italy and migrated to Australia in the late 1950s, when he was twelve years old.

Finding that most Australians struggle to say his name properly, Lucciano begins to go by Luke Lombard, which is the name printed on his first Driver Licence.

In 1978 Luke buys a house at 123 Fake Street.

Luke uses his Italian Birth Certificate to establish his identity.

When the purchase settles, the Certificate of Title records his name as ‘Lucciano Lombardi’.

Unfortunately, in 2020, Luke is diagnosed with cancer.

Luke decides to see a solicitor and to ensure that his affairs are in order.

The solicitor takes a copy of Luke’s Drivers Licence to confirm his identity but does not ask if he is known by any other names.

Luke’s solicitor drafts a will that is promptly executed.

The will states ‘This is the last will of me Luke Lombard…’.

Twelve months later, Luke passes away.

Luke’s executor, a friend who has only ever known Luke by his anglicised name, retains the solicitor who drafted Luke’s final will to obtain a Grant of Probate, which is granted six months later over the estate of the late ‘Luke Lombard’.

The executor asks the solicitor to sell Luke’s property.

As part of the conveyancing process, the solicitor conducts a title search and discovers that he is unable to deal with the Fake Street property because the name on the Certificate of Title is different to the name listed in the Grant of Probate.

The solicitor has to apply for an amended Grant of Probate in the name of ‘Luke Lombard, also known as Lucciano Lombardi’.

Although not uncommon, anglicised names often cause issues with solicitors who lack experience in estate administration.

Had the solicitor conducted an early Title Search on Luke’s property before applying for a Grant of Probate, he could have avoided unnecessary delay and expense.

Nambucca Council no surprises

IT’S very disappointing but not surprising that a majority of our local councillors voted in favour of the sale of community land on Ocean Beach Road, Valla, and in doing this chose to ignore and override the views of local members of the community.

There have been a number of situations in recent times where the views of local community members have been ignored and overridden at council meetings.

Exactly the same happened with past decisions by council taken in relation to the Visitors Information Centre and more recently decisions made in respect of the architectural plans for the development of the Nambucca Community and Arts Centre site.

In the latter case there was a wealth of well-reasoned opinion expressed by volunteers and community members in written submissions and in public meetings speaking strongly against current plans, but

community views and representations were completely ignored and not one compromise to the plans was accepted.

The problem is that although it’s a legal requirement for local councils to have public consultation meetings in relation to developments it’s not a legal requirement to take any account of the outcomes of such consultations.

This is a sorry state of affairs and makes it all the more vital that when council elections come round we vote for councillors who have respect for the public consultation process and genuinely listen to the views of community members.

At the end of the day we are the voters and the ballot box is perhaps the only place where we can express our opinions and be heard.

NEWS Of The Area (NOTA) welcomes veteran journalist and editor Daniel Pedersen to the organisation in a three week guest editing role while regular editor Doug Connor is on leave.

Dan will take on the editing of NOTA’s four community newspaper titles during this period.

Dan joins NOTA with decades of journalism experience under his belt, having held reporting, editing and senior management roles in media outlets across Australia and Asia.

Most recently Dan held the role of Deputy Editor at The Land newspaper.

Dan is also a published author, having been commissioned to write a book about the Karen ethnic minority in Burma.

The resulting book, entitled ‘Secret Genocide, Voices of the Karen of Burma’ was released worldwide in February 2011.

I AM a non-drinker and I get sick of having to explain to people why I don't drink. It is almost as though I am telling them that I have a socially unacceptable illness. Why can't people just accept that I don't enjoy drinking alcohol? I don't like the way it makes me feel, and I don't like the way it makes other people look and act.

Mr Jarrod P Dear Jarrod, Both anecdotally and through surveys, there's no denying that Australians are big drinkers.

An international survey found we were the heaviest drinkers in the world, drinking to the point of being drunk an average of 27 times a year.

Those are some pretty heavy statistics.

Expressions like 'wine time' or 'mummy needs a wine' make drinking a badge of honour.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying a drink, but when it turns from social to antisocial, it loses its appeal.

It's unacceptable for your friends and associates to be not accepting of your nondrinking status.

Maybe you just need to find a line that clearly states your position "I'm in a delicate way" (since you're a male, that will be sure to shut them up).

"I'm the designated driver" (I'm just being responsible; leave me alone).

"I need steady hands for what I'm doing tonight" (wink suggestively).

"The last time I drank heavily I woke up in a compromising position with your (neighbour/boss/wife/Labrador/fondue pot - take your pick).

Alternatively, you could just order a mocktail so they leave you alone, or find a group of friends who don't need to be completely sozzled to enjoy life.

Bernard Laverty P/L has sponsored the Ladies BC for many years.

In other games, Joan Haigh, Manor Smith and Pat Fletcher defeated Kerrie Dale, Nerida Blackford and Pam James 21-12; Teresa Meehan, Sandra Seckold and Elaine Fleming def Ann Marie Johnson, Margaret Dwarte and Kim Porter 20-15, and Eliza Brown, Margaret Duffus and Gloria Richardson had a draw 2323 with Rosemary Dugdale, Arlene Duffus and Bev Jones.
