By Mick BIRTLES EARLIER this year the Nambucca Valley said a sad farewell to Mr Paul Weekley, a man with a remarkable track record of selfless dedication to the community who passed away at the age of 72.

Community radio was among Paul’s interests and, to commemorate his life, a lime tree was recently planted in the garden at the Tewinga studios of Nambucca Valley Radio (2NVR).

Paul was an on-air announcer at 2NVR for ten years.

“Paul was not a flowers type of fellow so, after consultation with his family, a lime tree was considered appropriate and Paul’s wife Anne and the Member for Oxley Mr Michael Kemp performed the honour of planting,” Donna Collins, President of the Nambucca Valley Radio Committee of Management told News Of The Area.

The dedication of the tree in Paul’s honour has links to a tree planting project he and his family were involved in during the 1970s with the Fulani nomads in Burkina Faso, West Africa, where they spent fourteen years.

Over this time Paul utilised his agricultural expertise to help alleviate the chronic food insecurity in the area.

Following their time in West Africa, the family lived in the Blue Mountains.

An active member of the State Emergency Service (SES), Paul was among those who worked tirelessly to rescue survivors from the rubble when the village of Thredbo was buried by an unprecedented landslide in 1997.

On settling into life in the Nambucca Valley, Paul volunteered as Secretary

and Researcher at the Bowraville Folk Museum.

He greatly assisted with the administration of the Museum, helping them fulfil governance responsibilities as well as helping families explore their historic links to the Nambucca Valley.

This humble gentleman worked throughout his adult life for the benefit

of the environment, his community, his church and those in need and will be missed by so many across the district.

To those who knew Paul, the lime tree planted at Tewinga will serve as a reminder of a man taken too soon and his life so very well lived.

NAMBUCCA Valley Council has nominated Councillor Susan Jenvey as representative and Councillor David Jones as an alternative to represent Council on the Great Koala National Park Community Advisory Panel.

In November, the State Government announced that three advisory panels will be created to provide consultation on the establishment of the park.

According to the State Government, “The three advisory panels representing the views of industry, the community and Aboriginal groups will give feedback on the process of assessing land for inclusion in the national park.

“They will also provide information on economic, social, ecological and cultural matters.”

Progress made towards creating free roadside camping sites in Bowraville FROM Page 1 the Local Traffic Committee.

It is expected that this space will allow for up to six fully self-contained recreational vehicles (i.e. containing cooking, dining, sleeping and bathroom facilities) to park overnight for one night only and a maximum of two hours between 8.30am and 5 pm Monday to Friday.

All wastes generated by campers must be collected and disposed of at an approved location.

The Bowraville Chamber of Commerce has been working for some time on finalising a location for free camping with the aims of attracting visitors to the town.

There have been several alternative locations

considered before this site was put forward to council.

Considerations for the placement of the site were access to shops and amenities.

An alternative location at Lanes Bridge was rejected by council members before the Cook Street sites were approved at this meeting.

Mayor Rhonda Hoban expressed concern for the owners of the residential blocks on either side of this site.

“It’s clear that the Chamber has done a lot of work on this and the community has been involved but there are residential homes and blocks around it.

“Have the people right next to it, who are going to wake up and see RVs, been consulted, because they are

the ones who are going to be the most impacted.

“We have had some issues in the past with free-campers,” she added.

Council General Manager Bede Spannagle confirmed that the owners of vacant blocks on either side of the site had been consulted with and were happy with the proposal.

He has also been assured that the Bowraville Chamber of Commerce has consulted more widely with other neighbouring residents.

Councillors expressed several concerns with this location including that the site is on a heavy vehicle route and that traffic around Bowraville Central School could be impacted.

This resulted in a specification of the hours that vehicles could park in these sites.

ON Thursday 14 December, Ullrich Kessler addressed the Nambucca Valley Council meeting on the subject of the bollards along the Watt Creek Cycleway.

Mr Kessler began his prepared speech by congratulating Council on the completion of the cycleway, which now means that pedestrians and cyclists do not need to use the busy Giinagay Way anymore.

“However, there is a major hazard on the bikeway: the bollards, mainly between Kingsworth Estate and Nambucca Heads,” Mr Kessler said.

He said that most of the bollards were constructed before the new highway was constructed and they were no longer required for their original purpose of stopping cars from entering the cycleway but their continued existence poses a danger to

users of the path now.

Bowraville Book Fair and summer holiday activities

ON 20 and 21 January 2024, the annual Bowraville Book Fair will be held at the Bowraville Pioneer Community Centre in High Street, Bowraville.

The event is a major fundraiser for the Bowraville Community Development Association Incorporated (BCDAI), the group which operates out of this Community Centre.

The building was built in 1915 and is owned by the Bowraville community, after being donated by the Grace family, who ran a cafe and haberdashery there for many years.

Coinciding with the Book Fair, running over the two weeks around it, is an exhibition by local Swiss/Australian artist Margrit Rickenbach, who will be conducting a summer sale of her artworks.

Her artwork features a variety

of themes on canvas or paper using acrylic, watercolour, pastels and gouache.

“I live far out in the bush and I have no domestic animals but a lot of wild animals visit me.

“The land and its nature inspire me but this exhibition’s pictures are a combination of all my experiences this year,” Margrit told News Of The Area.

Garden lovers unite at Stuarts Point for Christmas feast

day of the newly established Stuarts Point and District Garden Club, and Wednesday, 6 December heralded their inaugural Christmas Party, a lively lunch time event.

Along with the perfectly presented floral centrepiece, a long table was laid out with

Christmas paraphernalia, and the flurry and aromas emanating from the Stuarts Point Hall kitchen demonstrated the culinary abilities of the members, beyond their green thumb skills.

A banquet of tasty delights was served and devoured, followed by a variety of somewhat bizarre festively themed games, led by Mrs Claus (local resident Chris Parke) and her team of helpers, and

Secret Santa gifts were playfully distributed, all reflecting an object of gardening delight or purpose.

Visitors attending included Zone Manager Marion Watts from Macksville, who was keen to congratulate the club on upholding the association motto of ‘Friendship through Gardening’.

Summer holiday events in the Stuarts Point district

HERE’S a roundup of upcoming local events in the Stuarts Point and Scotts Head district.

As was so well enjoyed at the Stuarts Point Foreshore Reserve last year, the Holiday Markets will be on again on two Sunday mornings from 8am till 2pm.

On 31 December, entertainment will be offered by Georgia Raynor, with the markets running again on 14 January. Locals and visitors are invited to enjoy a day by the river, strolling through a variety of market stalls while listening to live music, with food stalls open for both breakfast and lunch.

Scotts Head Reserve is

again the venue for the Twilight Holiday Markets, to be held every Wednesday afternoon from 3pm - 8pm over the summer holidays, featuring music, meals and twilight market stalls.

Market coordinator Tina Matley noted, “Be entertained by local musicians, grab some scrumptious dinner from one of the many food trucks, BYO bevvies and browse the many stalls.”

Friday evening 12 January signals a special screening of the popular locally filmed and produced documentary, ‘Bellingen - The Promised Land’, at Stuarts Point Community Hall.

THE Nambucca Macksville Evening VIEW Club had a very busy and successful December raising funds for their seven Learning for Life Students.

Their December ‘Off with the Faeries’ meeting was a fabulous, fun filled way to end the year, enjoyed by 20 guests as well as members from Nambucca River VIEW Club and Urunga VIEW Club.

“We had forty faeries in attendance at the Macksville Ex-Services Club,” said Michelle Walker, Nambucca Macksville Evening VIEW Club.

“It was here that the first raffle was drawn, with Kay Waters taking out first prize which was a dinner voucher valued at $200 for Anchors Wharf, plus champagne and chocolates.

“Second prize was a lovely hamper won by Wallis Cummings and third prize was a pie maker which Sheryl Page took home.”

Meetings will continue on the first Wednesday of every month thereafter.

Santa in the Park at Stuarts Point

AN enthusiastic atmosphere washed over the families gathered with their picnics at the popular Foreshore Park at Stuarts Point on the morning of Sunday 17 December…Santa was coming to visit!

With a flurry of activities, set up by a dedicated crew of Stuarts Point and District Community Organisation (SPaDCO) members, event organisers, Briana Earle (valiantly getting about on tinsel decorated crutches) and Shelley Blain, had an early start preparing the stage with the obligatory tree and tinsel for the big, red-suited fellows impending arrival.

Right on time, at 10.15am, Santa was delivered riding on the back of a well festooned white ute.

As he made his way the short distance to the outdoor stage, all ages of children thronged in excited anticipation.

After helping on the ‘cookie decorating station’, Genevieve Lovell proclaimed, “It was a really great morning for the kids.

“Santa gave them all a gift and lots of others goodies were abound.

"Thanks for a great event.”

As well as the undercover cookie decorating, SPaDCO had organised a similar station for writing letters to Santa (complete with a red letterbox for convenient posting), free frozen ‘zooper doopers’ to stave off the heat and numerous field games, including a

NOTA Reporter Ned Cowie: A year in review

I ONLY joined the News Of the Area team three months ago but what an education in my local community I have received since joining the NOTA team!

I almost feel I should be paying them – I said “ALMOST!” So, what motivated me to join NOTA as a contributing reporter?

In the past I have come to the realisation that a free and independent media is one of the pillars of any functioning democratic society such as we in the west enjoy.

However, I have watched in horror as, one after another, our mainstream news sources began to parrot the same stuff and it seemed to me that none of them was really listening to the people they claimed to

represent.

Through cost-cutting to actual reporting and powerful pushes by larger corporations, most of what was reaching my family through the nightly news was just what I considered to be propaganda.

The same stories would pop up on all channels and sometimes there was a gap of a few weeks but then a similar story would air somewhere else.

It was as if they were all being told to tell us the same things.

Funding was virtually cut to local area news services, and we were all served up the same national content through most major news outlets.

So, like many others, I turned off the TV, stopped listening to the mainstream news services, and only picked

up the local papers in my supermarket.

I decided to live my life in the moment, talking to strangers and discovering what people were really doing in my local area.

Naturally, when I saw an advertisement looking for local reporters at News Of The Area, I decided to contribute where I could, to provide a voice to ‘real’ people and eyes on the ground for those who couldn’t get out to find out what was happening locally.

For all your hard work over the past year, thank you to all my wonderful fellow contributors at Nambucca Valley NOTA - Mick, Jen, Andrew, Andrea, Mary and the many others (I don’t really read the sport - but still thank you).

Nambucca Valley Bowling Club

I KEEP saying we are the “Family Club” and how much we value and try to cater to our local community and the last week has showcased exactly that.

We hold our weekly Wednesday and Friday night raffles and member draws and on Fridays we also host a local community group to sell tickets in the Hundreds Club. They have the chance to raise $100 each time to help towards their club or group expenses, and use the money raised in the work that they do in our community.

This year we have held special nights to help some of our local sporting youths, including Lexie. Last Friday Lexie came down to the Club to show us just some of the awards and medals she has won this year, and to give us her thanks for the support

we have given her. She was a worthy recipient of her School Sportsperson of the Year award, and I had the pleasure to read out the description of her year and her achievements across a wide range of sports.

Our Club is proud of Lexie, and we look forward to supporting her in the years to come, and seeing what she can achieve in the sporting field.

We also had a terrific group of volunteers from our Club help Bill Coughlan complete the construction of Stage 1 of our Family Playground area.

This is going to be a fantastic asset to our Club’s members and visitors. It will enable family groups to come to a venue with entertainment for the children whilst enjoying great food and drinks.

Our December Mega Raffles let us share the Christmas spirit, with the Club full of people- all in great spirits and hoping to go

Senior State and Queensland State Championships

2023/24 SENIOR State and Queensland State Championships were held at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic centre Homebush Sydney from Sunday 10 to Saturday 16 December Also at the same time swimmers from the top end of the region swam at the 2023 Queensland State Championships from Saturday 9 to Friday 15 December.

Fifty-one swimmers from 11 clubs swam in 218 events at SNSW State and 12 swimmers from 5 clubs swam in 51 events in Queensland State.

Swimmers from most states of NSW also swam as well as overseas countries.

Those countries were the Netherlands, Tunisia, New Caledonia, Japan and several clubs from New Zealand.

This all made for good swimming and large entries.

Some of the 50 events went to 36 heats x 10.

Here is how each club has fared so far this season.

Valleys Cricket Club: Last season’s North Coast Cricket Council’s Premier League champions have continued their fine form, sitting undefeated at the top of the first-grade competition.

Sawtell Cricket Club: Ladder leaders in the T20 Cup competition having remained undefeated as NOTA went to press.

Editor’s note: Thanks for all the support!

By Doug CONNOR, Group Editor IN June 2020, amid rapidly developing pandemic conditions, I sat at the coffee table in my Brisbane unit and spoke to Michael ‘Mick’ Wright via Zoom for the first time.

It was a tough time for newspapers, with hundreds of regional publications disappearing or becoming digital-only in the few months prior due to rising costs and dwindling profits.

The owner of two weekly newspapers in the Hunter region, Mick had a dream to go bigger, and quickly, too.

“Launching newspapers in this economic climate?” I thought.

“Crazy!

“How long?

“A month?!”

Clearly easily convinced, several weeks later I was at the Wright family’s Medowie property filling my four-wheeldrive with news stands, on route to Coffs Harbour to set up a newspaper, the Coffs Coast News Of The Area.

Having been out of the news game for several years, it was a fairly bizarre re-entry into the world of newspapers; door knocking at businesses around the region for three days to find stockists for a paper which did not yet exist.

Thankfully, the community welcomed us with open arms, and just a few days later, the first edition was published.

While a small company in numbers, there is a large appetite for practicality and getting things done.

Today, News Of The Area publishes four community newspapers per week,

covering Port Stephens, the Myall Coast, the Nambucca Valley and the Coffs Coast.

However, the story of the NOTA doesn’t start in 2020.

The roots of the paper can be traced to the twin towns of Tea

Gardens and Hawks Nest, where, in April 1970 the members of the local Progress Association “recognised the need for some type of local, informative newsletter to bring to the notice of the people of the Tea Gardens - Hawks Nest area the events and

For many people, it’s still a novelty.

One dad I interviewed was so wrapped about his daughter getting in the paper that he got six copies, with plans to frame one.

I have only one clipping of myself taken decades ago.

Start your evening at about 7:30 with a viewing of Forrest Gump (1994, Dir. Robert Zemeckis).

A tour of Americana throughout the 20th century, Forrest Gump is all about watching a culture shift and change over time, from the perspective of a man who remains blessedly untouched by the forces that surround him.

From the rock’n’roll era of the 50s, through the burgeoning liberation and then horrific war of the 60s and 70s, into the hedonism that followed and the excess of the 80s, the titular character bounces from one major historic moment to another, always observing.

But look, if you’re not that crazy about an overload of the USA, play cards with your neighbours while the movie plays in the background.

It’s mostly about that brilliant

soundtrack anyway.

Once you’re ready to get comfortable, it’s time for a real New Years movie in When Harry Met Sally (1989, Dir. Rob Reiner).

You don’t need to like romantic comedies to love this movie.

Following the March 2021, February 2022 and June 2022 severe storms and flooding, the Nambucca Valley Local Government Area (LGA) received Natural Disaster Declarations resulting in the State and Commonwealth providing funding support to help with the cost of cleaning up and restoring damaged road and essential public assets.

The majority of Council’s road network has been impacted to some extent, which has resulted in an unprecedented amount of repairs to undertake. Council is aware there are numerous potholes, corrugations and gravel loss on some roads.

• Council has recorded 67 significant landslip events that will require remediation through the LGA, with an estimated repair cost in the order of $40million and further information is available on landslip damages via an interactive map located on Council’s website by following the Disaster Recovery link.

• Since the March 2021 flooding, the damage bill to date has been in excess of $4.4million predominately directed toward our emergency relief works on the road network. These works are still on-going.

One of the things that makes Christmas Vacation such a perfect post-Christmas viewing is the catharsis of laughing at the disaster-in-themaking that is the Griswold family gathering.

that we rediscover our own sense of humour. More than laughing at ourselves, the film is somewhat inspiring in the way it presents family and a generally positive outlook on life.

Things may keep going wrong for Clark, his family has financial concerns, he doesn’t have a good relationship with his neighbours…but when the

moment of truth comes the family display support, love and grace in spite of their difficult circumstances.

It’s a good reminder to us all as we step from Christmas to the New Year and beyond: there is plenty that is out of our control in this life, but we can all choose to bear one another's burdens, and that makes all the difference.

By Andrea FERRARI BIG-HEARTED support from local businesses and individuals is building a bountiful auction for the much anticipated 30th Elly Stig Memorial Golf Day at the Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club on Sunday January 7, 2024.

“We are thrilled to share the extraordinary generosity of our major sponsors and donors towards our Auction,” said organisers Ray Stig and Raelene Squires.

“These remarkable contributions not only add a layer of excitement to our event but also significantly enhance our fundraising efforts for the Children's Cancer Institute.”

A heartfelt thank you goes to North Coast Boating Centre, Urunga, for their donation of two kayaks.

“This generous contribution not only adds to the thrill of our golf day but also highlights the diverse support we receive from local businesses,” said Raelene.

Psillakis Surfboards have

added a touch of coastal flair to the prize collection with the donation of a mid-length surfboard.

Gregory Jewellers have contributed a sterling silver thick squared curb 55cm link chain valued at $1150.

“This piece not only reflects the fine craftsmanship of Gregory Jewellers but also underscores their commitment to supporting our cause.

“For those seeking an exclusive experience, we are delighted to announce the donation of two tickets to the President's tent for the Coffs Harbour Cup 2024.”

Gratitude goes to Nambucca Heads Butchery for their generous donation of “a barbecue that adds an exciting culinary element to our special day”.

THE EXCITEMENT and big hitting brilliance of the Big Bash League is set to return to the Coffs Coast next week, when the Sydney Sixers take on the Brisbane Heat on Wednesday, 3 January at the C.ex Coffs International Stadium.

This summer’s game is a rematch of last season’s Challenger Final, which the Heat won by four wickets before losing to the Perth

Scorchers in the Final.

Both the Sixers and Heat had won their first two matches they had played to start the current season before NOTA went to print.

The two teams were scheduled to play off on New Year's Day at The Gabba, before facing off two days later in Coffs Harbour.

This season’s match will be the fourth time the Sixers have played in Coffs Harbour, having also played against the Adelaide Strikers in 2023 and 2020, and the Perth Scorchers in 2022.

Sixers opener Josh Philippe will be playing in Coffs Harbour for the fourth time, and could not wait to get back and have a bash in front of a passionate Coffs crowd.

“I think we always have good support and a good fan base up there, it’s a nice change and we always enjoy coming up to Coffs,” he said.

“It’s a beautiful batting wicket which generally has a lot of runs, so hopefully I can get a score up there.”

Philippe highlighted the importance of the Sixers taking the Big Bash to a regional area such as Coffs Harbour.

“It's nice to spread cricket around NSW, and not all games we play are sell outs, so it’s great to come to Coffs Harbour and play in front of a packed crowd and give people in regional areas a chance to see us.”

Wednesday night’s match between the Sixers and Heat gets underway from 6.05pm.
