MOTHER Nature was kind to attendees of ANZAC Day 2022 commemorations in Nambucca Heads on Monday with only a small amount of rain falling during the Dawn Service and dry weather for both the March and Main ANZAC Day Service.

The COVID pandemic put a hold on being able to march and hold services for the past two years and, judging by the large number in attendance, people in Nambucca Heads were glad to be able to return to the traditional way of observing ANZAC Day. Staff of the Nambucca Heads RSL Club, led by CEO Wendy Mills, lit the area of the Nambucca

who have served in uniform in the Middle East since 2001.

Many veterans call the Mid North Coast home.

The demands of service in the ADF are unique in that personnel can be expected to serve in war zones and even training for war can place them in high risk situations.

DVA has mechanisms in place to enable ex-service personnel to claim compensation should they suffer physical or mental injuries as a result of their service; however the system is complex and bureaucratic in nature and expert assistance is usually required.

The Veterans Centre Mid North Coast (VCMNC), located in Coffs Harbour, was established with one of their primary aims to assist veterans in our district with this expert assistance.

Here in the Nambucca Valley the VCMNC is the only organisation providing face to face support for veterans in need of pensions advocacy as well as mentoring and training to those volunteers who assist veterans in matters of compensation.

The VCMNC is volunteer operated and is reliant on government grants and public donations to be able to keep their doors open and conduct their vital work for veterans.

In 2021 the VCMNC found that delays in the awarding of grants

were causing the centre to run out of the funds required to pay operating costs and they were faced with the prospect of having to close their doors.

News Of The Area spoke to the Treasurer of the Nambucca Heads RSL sub-Branch, Mr John Kent OAM, who said, “The Veterans Centre closing down would be devastating for veterans in our Valley who required assistance and we had to do something to help.”

Mr Kent went on to say, “Our RSL sub-Branch members voted unanimously to assist the VCMNC with funds raised by our RSL Women Auxiliary to the sum of $2,500 per year over a period of

three years.”

When hearing of the plight of the VCMNC, the Nambucca Heads RSL Club Limited, through the very generous Club Grant system, also swung into action in support of Nambucca Valley Veterans and matched the sub-Branch’s support.

The combined total of financial support going to the VCMNC will be $5,000 per year over three years.

On the evening of Friday 22 April 2022, VCMNC representative Mr Richard Kelloway OAM visited the Nambucca Heads RSL Club and publicly acknowledged the support from the Club and the sub-Branch.

Club Limited, Mrs Terrie Hyslop, responded to Mr Kelloway by saying, “The Club is proud to stand behind our veterans and assist them in situations like this.”

Mr Kelloway told News Of The Area, “We had got to the point where we only had funds to sustain operations for a couple more months so the support by the both the Nambucca Heads RSL Club and RSL sub-Branch has been a lifeline and we can now continue to do our vital work for veterans in the district.”

Mr Kelloway concluded, “On behalf of those that rely on our services I can’t thank the Club and the sub-Branch enough for their support.”

Heads Memorial with flaming torches for the Dawn Service which greatly added to the emotion of the occasion.

Following the dawn service the Nambucca Heads RSL Club served nearly 200 cooked breakfasts in a manner that has become a tradition in the town.

Approximately 40 veterans led the march from the top of Bowra Street to the Nambucca Heads Memorial with several service groups and school groups marching behind the veterans.

Many veterans commented how wonderful it was to have school children participate in the march and how well behaved they were during the service.

The ANZAC Day address was delivered by Captain Peter Fox from the 41st Battalion, the Royal New South Wales Regiment (41 RNSWR), who is currently 2nd in Command of Charlie Company at Coffs Harbour.

Captain Fox, who grew up in Murwillumbah, has served as an education officer in the Regular Army before transferring to the Army Reserve and is currently a science teacher

at Bellingen High School.

Captain Fox reminded those gathered about the sacrifices of our ANZAC forefathers and provided an insight to the hard work that Army Reservists from the Mid North Coast have been doing in support of Operations Flood and COVID Assist.

Soldiers from 41 RNSWR performed the role of Cenotaph Guard during the Nambucca Heads Main Service and Mr Chris Ellicott of Newee Creek, a former soldier and East Timor veteran, told News Of The Area, “The soldiers’ steadfastness during the 40 minute service was a credit to them and their unit.” q Captain Peter Cox of 41 RNSWR delivered the ANZAC Day address at the Nambucca Heads Main Service.

Election signage regulations AS the Federal Election campaign moves into full swing, candidates and their supporters are reminded they must comply with State and Council regulations when erecting political signage.

Council has issued a stern warning to all political candidates they must follow the regulations in regards to political signage.

Fines of up to $330 per sign may apply if election signage is on a public road or Council land.

Council will also impound the signs.

Council officers will undertake a program of compliance and monitoring to ensure all posters and signage containing electoral material comply with the State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008 Division 2, Subdivision 13 Election signs.

As part of these regulations, election signs must be no more than 0.8 square metres in area.

No signs are allowed to be displayed on Council's road reserves, either freestanding pole signs or those affixed to trees or street furniture.

Signage is also not allowed to be displayed on a trailer parked on a road or road-related areas.

Council officers will remove signs from public property if they are not standard-sized corflute with appropriate content, or if they are in a dangerous location.

By Andrea FERRARI THE Housing Matters Action Group (HMAG) is launching a series of videos featuring interviews with candidates for Cowper answering a set of housingrelated questions, designed to be relevant to all Cowper residents who can register to receive the videos.

Housing is a visible issue across the Cowper electorate with the obvious need for affordable accommodation seen in people, sometimes whole families, sleeping rough on the streets and in their cars around the Mid North Coast.

While the reasons for homelessness and the need for housing are complex with no quick solution, the Bellingenbased Housing Matters Action Group advocates that does not mean we can't work together to find a range of solutions.

The group has been working to support local and regional housing issues since 2018 and wants to highlight the crisis in the lead up to the Federal election.

“Housing is something that everyone needs and increasingly we’re seeing

a growing divide between those that can afford the rapidly increasing housing costs and those getting pushed to the margins,” Emma Belcher, Vice-Chair, HMAG said.

“We need to find real solutions and commitments from our elected representatives because if we leave it to the market, we’re only going to get more of the same.”

Residents are invited to register online to hear Cowper candidates talk about housing, their ideas and solutions and how, if elected, they will work to improve the housing system to deliver meaningful change to households across Cowper.

Heise calls for National Emergency Response Force CAZ Heise, the Independent candidate for Cowper, is calling for the creation of a dedicated National Emergency Response Force, resourced with a fleet of specialised aerial firefighting units, to address what she calls the biggest threat to everyday people across the Mid North Coast.

Ms Heise said while a strong Armed Forces is needed to protect Australia from foreign aggression, the threat of climate change is a larger and more immediate

danger, and so deserves its own specialist tactical response unit.

“Due to the Coalition's criminal denial of climate change the people of Cowper have never been as exposed to the impacts of natural disasters,” Ms Heise said.

“After the recent Lismore flood disaster the Government announced an extra 20,000 places for the army, but like everything this government does, it doesn’t address the real problem.

“It still hasn’t delivered

on its promise to invest in state-of-the-art aerial fire fighting units following the devastating Black Summer bushfires, and nor has it done enough to help people who lost everything to get their lives back on track.”

Ms Heise said climate change modelling predicts more severe fires, storms and flood events for the Hastings, Macleay, Nambucca and Bellinger Valleys.

“It’s time we were all better prepared,” she said.

Ms Heise envisions

“My vision would be for local leadership and knowledge to continue to drive the response effort.

“Experts on the ground would call in the National Emergency Response Force to help as needed with specialist equipment and emergency crews.

evacuation of people through to recovery and rebuilding.

“No-one knows how floods and fires will behave better than the locals on the ground, but they don’t always have all the rescue resources and personnel they need.

“All too often their local knowledge is overruled by experts based in city offices.

“That has proven to be dangerous and has to stop.

“At the moment we also rely too heavily on people freely giving of their time to

THE Matilda Street Gallery in Macksville proudly shares its latest exhibition, ‘Spirit of ANZAC’, by Scotts Head artist Kristin Hardiman.

Open now and closing on 11 May, locals who have seen the exhibition are urging others to “go see” Kristin's work.

Kristin’s inspiration derives from the devastating experience of war.

“ANZAC Day is one of the most important national days in Australia because it is a day for remembrance and reflection,” Kristin told News Of The Area.

“The day marks the anniversary of the first major action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces in WW1, but it has become far more than that because we remember the contributions made by all our armed forces; men and women over the years.

“We are not celebrating war.

“It seems that all wars up ‘til now have been started and fought because of greed or differences in opinion and the people fighting were, on the whole, like pawns on a chess board; ordinary young men and women forced to endure the devastating experience of war.”

It is their faces and expressions, exhibiting extraordinary bravery, camaraderie, loyalty and resilience; that Kristin captures in her paintings.

“We are in the midst of a new war, and we are fighting various battles with different enemies.

“We have an obligation to show the humanitarian qualities exhibited by our predecessors and we should consider ourselves as soldiers fighting to save ourselves and our planet.

“If we do not win this war there will be no winners,” she said.

Several pieces are artworks related by themes: VC heroes, the unknown soldier symbolic of all soldiers, ANZAC Day, everyday life around war, COVID, and our future.

Talking about her ‘Loss of Innocence’ soldier portrait, the subject of which she says is probably from the First Australian Imperial Force, Kristin said, “ID number PO6003.001 - identity unknown - this soldier’s photo was taken between 1915 and 1918.

“It is really sad that here is a striking looking young man preparing for war and no one knows anything about him.

“He is a casualty not only because he is probably buried in an unnamed grave in a foreign country, but his name is lost to the past.

“His striking face is a vivid reminder of the tragedy of war, and I have used him in many of my artworks to symbolise all soldiers.

“His face depicts sadness, strength, compassion and loyalty,” said Kristin.

Climate Action Forum for Cowper Candidates

By Andrew VIVIAN THE Coffs Coast Climate Action Group and Coffs School Strike 4 Climate

(SS4C) will invite candidates for Cowper to discuss their climate policies in a forum this evening (Friday 29 April).

Although members of SS4C are mostly too young to vote, young people will be impacted by the outcome of

this election and they will use this opportunity to question candidates on how they will act on the climate crisis and preserve a liveable planet for generations to come.

Polling has identified that climate change is a key concern for voters in Cowper and a large turnout is expected at the forum.

spokesperson for Coffs Coast Climate Action Group, said, “With record-breaking rain and floods devastating our region, on the back of the horrific bushfire season two years ago, it is clear that we need urgent action on the climate crisis.

“After years of dangerous and costly delay, Cowper deserves a representative

who is prepared to move Australia beyond coal and gas, towards a renewable energypowered, zero emissions future, in a fair and equitable way.

“This forum is our opportunity to hear more directly from the different candidates about their climate plans,” Liisa said.

Beach signs that make a point

By Susan KONTIC A FEW days before Easter a new sign appeared on the wire fence opposite the track leading down to North Valla beach.

It came as no surprise to local residents who have become accustomed to seeing similar signs go up and then mysteriously disappear shortly after.

The signs are always neatly done and never offensive, and they usually pose a simple question designed to make people think.

The latest sign reads,

“Do we need a coastal nature reserve or a beach freeway?”

North Valla beach is something of a magnet to holidaymakers as well as local residents, particularly those who fancy an early-morning dip or an afternoon walk.

It’s also popular with experienced boardriders, sailboarders, fishermen and kayakers.

“This particular sign is obviously aimed at people speeding along the beach in four-wheel drives,” explained a middle-aged man

RECENT comments by the Prime Minister which indicated that he felt “blessed” for his children not having a disability have not been well-received in sections of the community.

Independent candidate for Cowper Caz Heise has sought to reassure Mid North Coast parents of children with a disability, she stands with them and will never patronise them or diminish the struggles their families face.

Ms Heise, a nurse and former Director of nursing and Midwifery at the Coffs Harbour Health Campus, said she was

left shaking with rage and disbelief when she heard the Prime Minister's comments, in reply to a question about the NDIS. She said, “I couldn’t believe the leader of our country inferred that people who had children with a disability were less than blessed.

“I know how so many people across Cowper will be feeling after hearing those words.

“It’s like our Prime Minister judges people with disabilities and their parents as lesser beings.

Remembering mums

NAMBUCCA’s ageing mums, and mums-by-association, living at Autumn Lodge Macksville and Riverside Gardens Nambucca Heads, are amongst ladies who will receive early Mother’s Day gifts.

157 cakes of soap and two trays of artificial flowers were lovingly made into posies to be presented to the ‘forgotten mums’ or aunties who never had children but helped raise a community.

This is an initiative that has sprouted from

Margaret Schumacher and the Facebook group, Paying it Forward Coffs.

“Residing in nursing homes across Australia are women who have birthed a child and other ladies who were substitute mums and mums whose children no longer visit due to many reasons including social distancing,” Margaret told News Of The Area.

“These beautiful ladies deserve to be remembered.

“Last year I was talking to a long-time friend whose mum passed away in a nursing home.

q The final touch beautifully handwritten gift tags.

q Posies of artificial flowers lovingly wrapped for gifting.

q Voted the best gift cakes of soaps in ‘mum’s favourite’ fragrances.

“During this conversation she mentioned the forgotten mums…these ageing mums without children or family and we added them to our list.”

Together with friends from Paying it Forward Coffs they decided to collect cakes of soap to donate to these mums.

“When asked ‘how are you going to wrap them?’ we reached out for donations

of drawstring bags and handmade gift tags.”

Members and friends added soap to their weekly shopping.

“Rose, lavender, handmade, Australian made and soaps for sensitive skin were all gifted with love, kindness, generosity and a few tears,” said Margaret.

As the group started to prepare the gifts, stories were shared of mums’ favourite

soaps.

“We told stories of uses for a cake of soap (other than bathing) and shared memories of our own mums.”

“You may work with or know women who have lost a child,” said Margaret.

“They are still mums.

“You may know women who are estranged from their children.

“There are grandmas who haven't met their

grandchildren.”

These are the mums Margaret and Paying It Forward Coffs are calling the community to remember this Mother’s Day, Sunday 8 May 2022.

NVC Group launch Social Support Groups

AN inspired new program to promote senior social activities in the Nambucca Valley has been launched

by NVC Group, an Aged Care service provider on the Mid North Coast, NVC Group’s Recreational Activities Officer, Anne Winwood, shared details of the program to residents at a morning tea held at Daisy Cottage in Short Street, Macksville, on 21 April.

“In Macksville and Nambucca Heads there will be Social Support Groups held every second day with an array of activities,” Anne said.

“There will be bingo, trivia, craft mornings, board games, singing and gardening and more.

“I am delivering a broad range of activities to allow

residents to find something they like, can socialise and relax with.

“In May, for example, there is artist impression colouring, cards and board games and poetry readings.”

The aim of the new social activity program is to provide seniors with a variety of fun activities from games to

thought-provoking subjects, and more.

Designed to be allinclusive and welcoming, people can come for an hour or three, attend occasionally or on a regular basis, whatever suits them.

“We hope many friendships will be formed via this program,” said Anne.

Parkinson’s singing program goes online

THE Sing and Speak Online Parkinson’s Voice Program is a venture founded by Valla registered music therapist Bonnie Nilssen, and Coffs Harbour-based Parkinson’s nurse Vince Carroll.

It is an evolution of their Parkinson’s Voice Project, a face-to-face program of singing, which won the 2021 Mid North Coast Health Innovation Award for keeping people healthy.

When Covid closed down in-person sessions, Bonnie and Vince were inspired to launch the program into an online format.

Twelve months on and the Sing and Speak - Online Parkinson’s Voice Program is now delivering sessions beyond our local area, including in Sydney, Newcastle, Central Coast, Tenterfield and

Toowoomba, after Parkinson’s NSW endorsed the program and advertised it further afield.

With the inclusion of Valla Beach speech pathologist Sally Ireland, evidenced based Sing and Speak sessions are now conducted each term for a period of eight weeks.

Bonnie Nilsson told News Of The Area, “Your vocal muscles need exercise, just like any other group of muscles in your body.

“Being able to communicate with others is essential to a happy and healthy life.

“However, Parkinson's Disease makes all avenues of communication tough.

“It affects the volume, tone, rhythm and speed of speech.

“That is why singing as a therapeutic intervention is becoming one of the most widely recommended treatment paths for those

Charcoal to Diamonds A GROUP of Nambucca Valley art students have been guided over eight weeks to produce mixed media expressive works, under the leadership of Keir Jamieson.

Acclaimed as an exceptional art teacher, Keir has enabled her class to apply skills and techniques to produce resolved, unique and joyful pieces.

In the words of Claire Mellon, who attended the classes, Keir provided “just the right mixture of direction and freedom so there was space for you to apply skills to create your own personal vision”.

The group worked well together, encouraging and supporting each other throughout.

“Students were inspired by what others were doing and by the range of media on hand, where true experimentation could occur,” said Peta Coe, Nambucca Valley Arts Council.

“Many had never held a piece of charcoal before and it was a revelation to discover the qualities of this medium.”

It was also a first for many, when asked to produce a drawing in 30 seconds, then in one minute, then in three

“This freeing up exercise allowed them to realise that they really could draw!” said Peta.

Progressing onto more demonstrated and closely guided lessons in tonal work and landscapes, students then discovered a wide variety of mixed media, working on paper and canvas.

The students attacked each exercise with gusto.

The enthusiasm of the group was obvious and they should rightly be pleased with the exciting works produced.

“Another bonus was the wonderful camaraderie amongst participants who are now eager for their

works to be displayed as the featured artists of the month in May.” ‘Charcoal to Diamonds’, an exhibition featuring the students' creations, will be on display at the Stringer Gallery, Nambucca Heads from May 3 to May 28.

Concurrently, another featured exhibition at the Stringer, is a members’ show entitled ‘Rivers and Creeks’, also on display until May 28.

Valley Performers put on Spy Club

VALLEY Performers, the Macksville local community theatre group, is launching a new entertainment venture, a theatre restaurant play.

The group recently held a highly successful season held out of the Macksville Primary School. This year, still with no home due to the library refurbishing, Valley Performers have had fantastic support from

the Macksville Ex-Services Club.

“A theatre restaurant play was the obvious choice,” Ruth Stuart, Director/Vice President of Valley Performers told News Of The Area.

“So, after lots of research, Liane Mills’ Spy Club stood out, providing diverse colourful characters and an intriguing fast paced storyline.

“The experience of actors like Elwin Butler, one of our original members dating back to the 1960s, along with Karen Forbes and myself - we both joined in the mid-1980s - allows us to mentor those new to the stage.

“Our membership draws from an eclectic range of backgrounds including teachers, medical, business owners, yoga teachers, artists, retail, reception admin and accountants.

“Together, we come and, after the hard work of learning lines, have fun creating a fun filled, entertaining performance for our local community.

"The Macksville Ex-Services Club has been wonderful, always supporting community groups," said Ruth.

“We couldn’t do it without them.

“The cast has had such fun rehearsing Spy Club.

RIGHT through May and into June, friends and groups all over the country are gathering in homes and halls to share morning tea and raise funds to make a difference for those affected by cancer.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea is the largest fundraising event organised by the Cancer Council of Australia, and quite possibly the most enthusiastically adopted fundraiser in the country.

An event may be as simple as sharing a cup of tea with friends, but most clubs and community organisations will

THE Barry McDonald sponsored day is usually one of the big days on the Club calendar.

As has happened regularly this year the weather had a big impact and only the hardy ventured out.

The overall event was won by John Summerville with Noel Austin winning the front nine and Luke Laverty the back nine.

Longest drive went to John Summerville with Tannah Bradshaw runner up.

WITH the weather improving a little over the last couple of weeks we were able to get the Triples Championship wrapped up.

The first semi final saw the team of Bluey Garner, Gary Towner and Peter ‘Foxy’ Fox against Brian Nunn, Ken Grace and Ida Down in a close fought game which saw Foxy's

WE enjoyed some fine weather during the week up until Friday, when the raindrops fell upon the golf

course once more.

With some creative thinking by Greg, Paul and Johnathon, they have come up with a composite 9 Hole layout where there is limited

side alway in front but with Ida’s side nipping at his heels the whole way, Foxy holding on for a 20 - 17 win.

The second semi saw Tony Baker, Peter Carlow and Phil Brennan against Max Ward, Ken Ainsworth and Mark Coleman, with Mark's side holding a narrow lead after 15 ends.

At 13 -11 there was nothing in it, but great draw bowling by Max and

water laying on these holes and the least amount of rough which is impossible to cut under these conditions.

This allowed us to provide competitions for members on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the full course, except the 10th, back in play on Thursday.

And that was it for the week.

The course was inundated once again over Friday night, and unplayable – back to square one.

On Tuesday 19 April we played a Medley Stableford

using our newly created Composite Par 58 Course over 18 Holes. Winner was Jeffrey Vanderwyk (20) with 42 points.

Nigel said, “The first 30 minutes of the game were fairly even however Macksville five-eight Jacob Simpson was able to use his well developed football IQ to identify weaknesses in the Nambucca defence, resulting in a 20-6 scoreline in Macksville favour by half time.”

The second half saw Macksville extend the lead with their second row Sam Miles clocking up some impressive metres in attack.

While the end result of 42-6 may indicate a somewhat lopsided affair on the paddock, with the Nambucca Roosters unable to match Macksville’s well practised combinations, it was the first Roosters game

in a number of years and they demonstrated strong potential for the season ahead.

Nigel Wilbow added, “Roosters captain Jeremy Burrows was impressive in all aspects of his playing and the Roosters number ten, Eric Davis, was unrelenting in his energy and effort through the whole game.”

News Of The Area asked Nigel for his thoughts on the contribution made on the day by Greg Inglis.

Nigel concluded, “Inglis demonstrated quality over quantity and his presence on the field made a difference with the Roosters anticipating him gaining possession of the ball which in itself created opportunities elsewhere on the paddock.”

Plaintiff gambles on success of claim JOANNE goes through a difficult divorce and later that year is dismissed from employment for stealing funds.

She moves in with her mother, Mary and tells her that she has a gambling problem.

Several years later, Mary sells her house and gives Joanne and her two other children an early inheritance of $50,000.

Within a couple of months of Joanne receiving the funds, Joanne has spent all of the money on gambling.

Mary is concerned about Joanne’s gambling and makes a new will, leaving her just 15 percent of her estate.

She leaves the bulk of her estate to her grandchildren.

When Mary passes away a couple of years later, Joanne makes a claim on her estate.

Joanne is 50 years of age, residing in a Housing Commission unit and has no significant assets other than a modest vehicle which is subject to a substantial car loan.

In assessing the merits of Joanne’s claim, the Court recognises that she received an early inheritance and takes this into consideration.

The Court also considers the financial position of Joanne’s siblings and the grandchildren, noting Mary’s wish to assist them financially in her will.

The Court does not view Joanne’s stealing conviction as relevant to her relationship with her mother and makes an order that Joanne receives onethird of Mary’s estate, together with the payment of the legal costs.

However, the Court views Joanne’s gambling as a serious problem and considers it appropriate to make further orders, to ensure that the funds are not wasted.

The Court orders that the NSW Trustee and Guardian is to hold Joanne’s one-third of the estate, on trust to apply up to $30,000 towards the purchase of a motor vehicle, up to $10,000 towards the purchase of furniture and appliances and for the balance to be held by the NSW Trustee and Guardian to be applied at its discretion towards Joanne’s support and welfare.

Going for Broke DEAR News Of The Area, OUR government debt stands at over $900 billion, which is much higher than it has ever been in recorded memory.

So, does this affect us in terms of our daily lives or is it just a headache for the treasurer?

As government debt increases, so does the percentage of tax revenue that goes towards servicing the debt with interest payments.

This means that expenditure on our infrastructure, education, public health, social security and aged care suffers.

Public debt increases inflation, and devalues the dollars earned by Australians.

In the long run it leads to higher interest rates which drives up house prices.

In short, government debt results in a lowering of our standard of living and a slowdown

in economic development and community provision.

We are led to believe that the present government is a safe pair of hands when it comes to managing the economy but they have seriously mishandled our economy in recent times.

They have substantially increased our public debt, supported big corporations in allowing them to pay no tax, have misspent on Job Keeper payments and seem to believe that “borrow now pay later” is good economic management.

We need to consider whether ‘going for broke’ is always the best way to go.

Can this government in truth say they are good managers of the economy?

We need to see beyond the slogans and look at the figures.

I am now intrigued as to which party you are referring to.

Is it a party whose current leader is conducting his political ambitions via Zoom with his dog Toto?

Is it the party whose leader may know the (dubiously defined) unemployment rate, but should stop misusing the word 'blessed'?

Is it the party whose leader knows a thing or two about battered hake, and throws around the phrase 'left wing virtue signalling' quicker than you could order a side of chips?

Is it the party whose leader makes obscure Twitter references to celebrating marijuana consumption while eating kebabs?

Or is it a new independent party, with a budget that only allows for a few strategically placed billboards in remote areas?

Regardless, I have a question for you about this common area allegedly displaying an offensive political sign.

Do you assist your neighbour to maintain this common area?

Do you have a roster of who gets to trim the grass around the letter boxes and water meter?

Or do you leave this role entirely to your neighbour, in fact showing little interest unless it is to collect your mail or position your bin?

If it is the latter, I think it would be impolite to start throwing around your opinions in relation to any improvements or distractions, political or otherwise.

If, much like our political parties, you only show an interest when it directly affects your current needs, I think you should just keep quiet, and perhaps reflect on the requirement for ongoing attention and maintenance.

q Macksville Sea Eagles’ Greg Inglis did much to draw an appreciative crowd to Allen Gillet Oval on Sunday afternoon for the Group 2 season opener.

By Mick BIRTLES THE Group 2 Rugby League 2022 season kicked off last weekend with the Macksville Sea Eagles hosting the Nambucca Roosters in arguably the most anticipated season opener ever played in the Nambucca Valley.

The palpable excitement hung in the air last Sunday for two reasons.

Firstly, it was the return of hometown hero and NRL legend Greg Inglis to play once again in Macksville colours and secondly, it was the first local derby since 2018 with the return of the Nambucca Roosters to the senior competition.

It became clear how much locals had missed their football during those strange pandemic months as they turned out in big numbers to witness four exciting games of football.

The weather was kind to players and spectators alike on Sunday however the surface of the Allen Gillet Oval was still soft and slippery from weeks of wet weather and presented a challenge to players.

2NVR Nambucca Valley Radio’s sports presenters Nigel Wilbow, Donna Collins and Gary Biden called the game live to air on Sunday and News Of The Area spoke to Nigel about the long CONTINUED Page 15
