By Mick BIRTLES WHILE the devastation of the 2019 bushfires fades in the minds of many Australians, the memories and aftermath are still something many Nambucca Valley residents live with every day.

For a number of those who lost their homes, the daunting business of rebuilding has been made a little easier by a project known as the Nambucca Valley Septic Installation Initiative.

Conceived by Nambucca Valley based bushfire recovery volunteers, Kathleen

q Drew Walker is one of the local heroes making this unique initiative possible.

Crawley and Gus Smith, the initiative has brought out the best in human nature while dealing with the worst of circumstances.

In addition to assisting residents maintain appropriate hygiene standards and generate hope in those wanting to rebuild, the initiative was devised to assist the uninsured, severely underinsured and the most financially vulnerable fireaffected persons who wanted to stay on their properties.

This initiative has brought together a range of community organisations, local government and businesses in a most unique way.

It was Kathleen and Gus’s success when applying for a Reece Grant of $50,000 for septic tanks and hardware that

1. ON 17/1/22 Police arrested a 29-year-old man at Gumma Reserve following a domestic violence incident.

The accused man was charged at Macksville Police Station with assault and intimidation offences and later released on bail.

The accused man appeared before Macksville Local Court on 20/1/22 with the matter subsequently adjourned to 24/3/22.

2. On 14/1/22 Police arrested a 29-year-old man at a Macksville address following a domestic

violence incident.

The accused man was charged at Macksville Police Station with malicious damage and breaching an AVO and later released on bail.

The accused man appeared before Macksville Local Court on 20/1/22 and was sentenced to an 18 month Community Correction Order.

3. On 18/1/22 Police issued a Court Attendance Notice to a 34-year-old woman following investigations related to a domestic violence incident at a Macksville address the previous evening.

A 34-year-old man is alleged to have been assaulted during the incident.

The accused woman is to appear before Macksville Local Court on 3/3/22.

4. On 18/1/22 Police arrested a 44-year-old man in Nambucca Heads following a domestic violence incident.

The accused man was charged at Macksville Police Station for breaching an AVO and later released on bail.

The accused man is to appear before Macksville Local Court on 10/2/22.

5. On 16/1/22 Police arrested a 33-year-old man at Gumma

relocating to the Nambucca Valley.

His resume as a volunteer also includes five years as a driver for Community Transport, being a founding member and current President of the Nambucca Men's Shed, a Board Member of the Nambucca Heads Bowling and Recreation Club since 2014 and the current Vice-Chairperson of that board.

For the last three years Mr Kent has been a valued member of the Mid North Coast Health District’s Community Reference Group and is also a member of the Pressure Injury Committee at the Macksville Hospital.

In 2016, Mr Kent’s work for the community was recognised locally in the Nambucca Shire Council Award.

Congratulations to Mr John Lochwood Kent on being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the community of Nambucca Heads.

Nambucca Valley Septic Installation Initiative unearths more local heroes FROM Page 1

enabled the initiative to begin.

Funding from the Council Bushfire Levy was provided to cover installation costs and when that was exhausted the Salvation Army were able to provide further funding.

Council granted additional funds and the amazing Nambucca Valley Rotary Club also granted $10,000 to the initiative.

But to make the initiative a reality so many other wonderful people and organisations had to be behind it.

Council waived the normal range of fees associated with such an installation and even though the initiative had secured the $50,000 Reece Grant, Reece Plumbing supplied the septic tanks and hardware at cost price.

The installation required the

services of specialised plumbers and two local companies, Drew Walker Plumbing and Nambucca Plumbing, stepped in to make it happen.

News Of The Area spoke to Drew Walker and asked how this was able to be achieved given his company’s existing workload.

Drew said, “We worked in the septic installations around other jobs and my team were eager to do

food items sold were a big part of income needed for the upkeep of the centre”.

The stage in the building boasted speakers and an amplifier and they too have been stolen along with other important items.

The theft is another disappointing event for the small, hard working committee in recent months at the Community Centre.

Late last year there was a breakin on a smaller scale and since then vandals have smashed bottles in the adjoining tennis courts, requiring hours of clean up work by volunteers to remove the hazard to local children.

“The police response has been fabulous and they have been extensive in their investigations including fingerprinting the scene,” Tina said.

News Of The Area contacted the Police for comment and were advised, “Although there have been no arrests at this stage, investigations are

continuing.”

The Police added that, “While this may have been an isolated incident, residents in the area should be vigilant to any unusual occurrence and anyone who has information regarding the break-in is urged to call crime-stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

The facility itself is owned by Nambucca Valley Council who must absorb the cost for some of the repair work required in the aftermath of this break-in and the entire community should be concerned about the consequences of this thoughtless act of theft.

Thoughtless thieves target Missabotti Community Centre

THE close knit community of Missabotti have recently been dealt a disheartening blow when their much loved Community Centre was broken into by thieves.

The historic building has stood for 96 years and is considered by many to be the local social hub.

Although the thieves did not extensively damage the building they did take items vital to fundraising efforts that pay the bills to keep the centre open.

The hall is available for hire and its pie warmer and hot water urn, regularly used by those hiring the hall, are among the hard to replace items stolen during the break-in.

After the launch, participants then asked V4C to facilitate a process to find a passionate and community-supported independent candidate willing to champion these issues at the upcoming Federal election.

A campaign of awareness and grassroots connections, supported by Cathy McGowan, the former independent MP for Indi, identified two female candidates who declared their intention to stand.

Following the online town hall forum last Sunday 23 January, in which both candidates were invited to present, members were then able to vote for their choice.

A total of 65% of Cowper voters on the 709 subscriber V4C mailing list voted, which resulted in Caz Heise being selected as the new V4C-endorsed independent candidate for Cowper.

NSW Maritime Boating Safety Officers carried out the statewide compliance blitz up and down the coast of NSW and inland, ahead of the Australia Day public holiday to remind people to stay safe on the water.

Mr Hutchings said in 2021 the majority of fatalities were a result of not wearing a lifejacket.

“We want everyone heading out on the water this Australia Day to come home safely.

“Thirteen out of the 16 people who died last year weren’t wearing a life jacket.

“Wearing a lifejacket while you’re on the water is the best and simplest thing you can do to stay safe.

“We’ve also seen a number of injuries on our waterways as a result of propeller strike and involving rough conditions,” he said.

“Weather can change quickly and conditions can turn dangerous for boaters.”

Education officers joined on-water officers to target boat ramps across NSW to educate boaters about on-water behaviour, lifejacket requirements, speed and vessel safety.

During last weekend, Boating Safety Officers carried out more than 2080 random safety checks from Tweed Heads on the north coast and south to the Victorian border, and along inland lakes and waterways including the entire Murray River.

LAST weekend’s statewide waterway safety blitz, held ahead of Australia Day on Wednesday, resulted in 88 fines and 227 official warnings for boaters and Jet Ski riders breaking the law, with a non-compliance rate of about one in 10 checked.

On the North Coast a total number of 452 safety checks were completed.

Nine Penalty Notices were issued with 48 Official Cautions.

NSW Maritime Executive Director, Mark Hutchings said the good news is the vast majority of boaters and Jet Skiers across the state – about 88 percent - showed they know, understand and follow the rules which exist to keep everyone safe on NSW waterways.

“The top three types of fines issued were for either not wearing or carrying a lifejacket and expired licenses and registrations.

“Speeding was also an issue, particularly among Jet Ski riders.” Mr Hutchings said.

John Mills retires from pharmacy at 86

John then purchased a pharmacy in Nambucca Heads which he operated for 20 years, before selling and starting the journey as a permanent locum for the next 23 years, working in various pharmacies from Kempsey to Coffs Harbour.

“The role of a pharmacist is a caring one dealing with many folk in the community with health problems,” John said.

“This requires understanding, compassion and trust which at times can be difficult.

“The pharmacist is the go-between with the client and the doctor, and it is important that a solid relationship exists between the two professionals.”

John said he has seen great changes in the role of the pharmacist in his lifetime.

“Back in the 1950s pharmacies were more involved in compounding medications such as ointments, mixtures, liniments, and powders.

“There are still a few compounding pharmacies operating however the pharmacist of 2022 is undertaking a more clinical role in their business specialising in blood pressure and blood glucose testing, sleep apnoea advice along with providing Webster packs of prescribed medication for clients who have difficulty in managing their drug intake regime.

“In recent years in my local area, I have witnessed young pharmacists entering into their own business and I have been encouraged by their high ethical standards along with the respect they receive from their customers.

“The future of the profession is certainly safe in their hands.”

Away from the pressures of the business world, John always manages to find time to become involved in volunteering work, which he says is

Known locally in the Nambucca Valley as a caring, fatherly figure, who looked after all his customers as if they were family, John, a modest man, has been persuaded to share some of his history with readers of News Of The Area.

“New Years Eve saw the expiry of my registration as a pharmacist after a period of 63 years in the profession,” John said.

“Born and raised in Armidale NSW I graduated from Sydney University in 1958 after three years of study combined with a three-year apprenticeship in a dispensary in Enmore which was close to the University.

“Eighteen months after completing Uni I worked for close to four years in England.”

On returning to Australia, John applied for a pharmacist’s position in New Guinea where he stayed for some years before coming back to Lismore, where he completed locums for two years.

Nambucca Power Project Survey

NAMBUCCA Heads Men’s Shed (NHMS) is working with the Community Power Agency to investigate possible options for renewable energy that will help to strengthen local not-for-profit organisations, lower their electricity bills and make them more sustainable into the future.

Funding for this work has been generously provided by the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal.

The Community Power Agency provides expert advice and support to communities, organisations, government and industry in developing community owned renewable energy.

In order to scope out what is required in the region, Nambucca Heads Men’s Shed team would like to know more about the priorities of local not-for-profits and understand their ideas around renewable energy, as well as what sorts of skills and assets they now have access to.

“Making choices about renewable energy is not everyone's area of expertise but high power bills can cripple a not-for-profit organisation,” Peter Sobey, Nambucca Heads Men’s Shed, told News Of The Area.

“The survey we are undertaking seeks to share the knowledge so that NFPs can make an informed choice

local not-for-profits by reducing their electricity bills as well as their carbon emissions, we also hope that it will plant the seed for other groups and individuals in the community to become involved in renewable energy and develop other projects,” Elizabeth told News Of The Area.

Covid-19 settings remain in place

THE NSW Government will extend current restrictions for another month as the State continues to take a measured response to managing COVID-19 with a focus on a safe return to school and restarting nonurgent elective surgery as soon as possible.

Current settings will continue from Thursday, 27 January 2022 until Sunday, 28 February 2022, including: • Hospitality venues, including pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafes, and nightclubs must follow the one person per two square metre rule indoors;

• Masks are required in all indoor settings (except residences).

Masks are strongly encouraged where you cannot maintain a safe distance from others; • QR code check-ins are compulsory at certain premises, including hospitality venues and retail shops; • Singing and dancing is not permitted in hospitality venues, entertainment facilities, nightclubs, indoor music festivals and indoor major recreation facilities (except for weddings, performers, instructors and students).

Minister for Health Brad Hazzard said there is plenty of availability and supply of boosters in the NSW Health vaccination clinics so those eligible for their booster shot should book as soon as possible.

Covid-safe start to school COVID-SAFE measures for the start of the school year next week have been revealed, including rapid antigen testing twice a week for school teachers, staff and students and mandatory mask wearing indoors for high school students and staff.

Mask wearing will also be mandatory indoors for primary school teachers and staff and is strongly recommended for primary school students.

Vented masks and cloth masks will no longer be permitted to be worn, with surgical masks required instead, which will be available at schools.

Parents are advised to watch their child for symptoms and if their child is unwell, even with mild symptoms,

keep them home and get them tested.

The NSW Government is strongly encouraging all students and their families to get vaccinated against Covid-19, and with vaccinations for children aged 5 to 11 now open parents are encouraged to book their younger children in for a vaccination before the start of school on Tuesday 1 February.

Once eligible, all adults are also encouraged to get booster shots.

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant stressed on Monday 24 January the importance of people getting booster vaccinations.

“My clear view is that boosters are essential,” Dr Chant said.

“I really can't stress enough that boosters now need to be seen not as boosters but as a requirement to get that extra protection.

“People should see that

third dose as essential.”

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet stated at a press conference on Monday 24 January that the State was “ready to go to open schools in a very safe way”.

All staff and students are asked to take a rapid antigen test and get a negative result before attending school at the start of Term 1.

Rapid antigen tests will be provided to all staff and students through their schools and schools will inform parents on how these kits can be collected.

For the first four weeks, students and staff should take a rapid antigen test twice a week in the morning before attending school, with test kits to continue to be supplied by schools.

A maximum of two parents or carers per student will be allowed onto school grounds for Kindergarten orientation or Year 7 transition at the start of the school year next week.

‘INTERTWINED’, the new exhibition at Urunga Art Space, invites you to have your senses stimulated as you experience the artworks.

Opening on Wednesday 26 January, the exhibition continues for two weeks.

The creators are a family affair.

Leigh and Liz are a husband-and-wife team, who exhibit together regularly both here and in France where they have their second home.

Joshua, who completed his Diploma of Ceramics at Coffs Harbour TAFE in 2020, is Liz's son.

All three artists live and have their studios at Raleigh.

As the name ‘Intertwined’ implies, the exhibition is an intertwining of the artworks of three family members who express their creativity in different mediums – sculpture

by Leigh Morgan, painting by Liz Challis and ceramics by Joshua Challis.

Leigh creates sensual sculptures in Huon Pine, Red Cedar and Rosewood.

They may be small decorative sculptures or large corporate pieces, often inspired by the nature and shape of the wood.

People are drawn to experience the soft, silky finish Leigh achieves with up to forty coats of French Polish.

Liz's paintings are extremely diverse.

They range from small to large and whilst the majority are acrylics, some are watercolours,” she said.

Liz also creates interesting and unusual collages.

Her colours vary from soft pastels to bold, vibrant colours and the paintings may be realistic or completely abstract.

She trained as a graphic design artist, and this sometimes influences the techniques she uses in her paintings.

Joshua is a newcomer to exhibiting.

Joshua’s work ranges from utilitarian mugs, plates and bowls to unique one-off plates that are beautiful artworks.

He also creates whimsical sculptures that are purely for pleasure.

IF nothing else, the rain during the week will do wonders for the new turf that has recently been laid across the front of the 17th Green, bringing an end to the poor state of the fairway that has plagued us for many years.

On Tuesday 18 January we played a Medley Stableford in pleasant conditions, thankfully, for players, the expected storms in the afternoon fizzled out.

Darren Bowles (9) from Woolooware and Jeramy Ashmen (17) both scored 39 points in Division one (0 to 18), Darren winning on countback.

In Division two (19 to 45), Leslie Mohr (22) top scored for the day with 43 points to win from Keith Elphick (19) with 34 points. DON Forrester, who seldom misses the mid week ‘Chook run’ or Saturday competition, was the sponsor of the Stableford game played on 21 January.

Some of the regulars shied away because of the threat of rain, but apart from one early shower it was a pleasant day for golf with a good field.

Murray Spear had a big week winning both the Mid Week competition and Saturday's Stableford.

He's lucky the golf association determines handicaps as former handicapper ‘Big Jeff’ might not have been so kind.

Maintaining his consistency Allan Clarke was runner up with a relatively newcomer Graham Everett second runner-up.

Straight shooters were Allan Clarke, Don Forrester and John Dowzard.

Parents claim repayment of loan after tragic loss DAVID and Jenny wish to purchase their first home.

They talk to their bank about obtaining finance and are informed that they will need to source additional funds to proceed.

Jenny talks to her parents, who agree to advance her $200,000 to assist with the purchase.

At settlement, David and Jenny are registered on title as joint tenants on the advice of their conveyancer.

Jenny makes a will, stating that her parents are to be paid a legacy of $200,000 from her estate.

Tragically, David and Jenny are involved in a serious car accident and are killed instantly.

Several months later, Jenny’s parents take a copy of her will to a solicitor, seeking advice regarding the $200,000.

They inform their solicitor that David was six months younger than Jenny when they passed-away.

Unfortunately, the solicitor advises them that in circumstances where there is no evidence as to which joint tenant passed-away first, the youngest joint tenant is deemed to have survived the other.

This means that because David and Jenny owned the property jointly, the property passes to David’s estate and is dealt with under his will.

David’s will leaves everything to his parents, which includes the $200,000 equity in the house.

Jenny did not own any other substantial assets.

The solicitor also advises Jenny’s parents that even if Jenny had other assets, without evidence to the contrary, the $200,000 advance to her is presumed to be a gift because it was advanced to a child, and therefore is not repayable to them as a loan.

Finally, the solicitor advises that because they were never dependent upon Jenny, they are unable to make a family provision claim against her estate, which could have allowed the Court to designate half of the property as part of Jenny’s “notional” estate.

Proper estate planning could have protected the parties.

It is also important to document loans made to children by way of a loan agreement, signed by all parties.

ENGLISH spinach (Spinacia oleracea) is a fussy little plant who likes a climate rather cooler than ours.

Yes, with attentiveness and gardening experience you can get it to grow here.

It's not the sort of green to look after itself and simply be available for mealtimes.

It's European popularity seems to be based on being one of the earliest plants available in spring when there's not much else to eat.

In this climate we are privileged with a delicious cornucopia of over forty leafy greens who can replace English spinach in our meals and there is something available at any time of year.

These might not be as well known - yet however any of these will be easier to grow at home and can be used in similar ways to English spinach depending on your tastebuds.

We have leafy green perennials and annuals, edible leaves of vegetables you may already be growing, and edible weeds which appear with no effort to the gardener.

Imagine, with a variety of edible greens all looking after themselves in your garden, go for a wander and pluck an assortment of new growth that happens to be ready as you pass by.

It becomes effortless to collect a huge amount quickly to eat right away.

A mixed serving could look like okinawa

spinach, malabar spinach, amaranth, pumpkin tips, sweet potato leaves, silverbeet and mushroom plant.

So much more nutrition for you. And free.

There are so many different rites of passage we must navigate when it comes to children.

The first night they manage to sleep in their own bed.

The day they discover that Bluey on ABC is far more entertaining than their parents.

The first day of school, where some children cling to the gate, and others say they don't need a lift, they'll get on the bus, further diminishing your role, but nevertheless giving you something to gloat about on your socials: "Lucy is so independent that she caught the bus to her first day of kindergarten #proudparents #teachingthemyoung #bringingupanindependentdaughter #madeherownlunchtoo, which other parents will read, scoffing and sniggering so much they spill their morning coffee down their shirt.

Some kids are natural self-starters and others are tied to the hip.

There is no easy way to handle the transition when they first move out of home, but you can make it easier by organising a family dinner at least once a week, or meeting up near her new home for coffee, organising a few takehome meals so you're not obsolete, and relishing in the significant reduction in washing and cleaning, as well as the food bill.

If she is leaving for a good purpose, such as starting university or moving for work, then take some solace in the fact that you have done a good job to this point.

If she's leaving to hook up with someone who looks like Hando from Romper Stomper, then know that even if you have done a good job, most children go through a rebellious stage and generally come out the other end at some point, when it is your role not to gloat in an I-told-you-so way, but to help pick up the pieces.

Make sure you keep in regular contact and try not to be melodramatic when she leaves by throwing yourself around her ankles and begging her to take you with her.

In a quirky satire based on Christine Leunens’s 2008 bestseller Caging Skies, Roman Griffin Davis plays Jojo, a lonely young boy growing up 1940s Germany who finds out his mother (Scarlett Johansson, pictured) is hiding a teenage Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. After befriending the girl, Jojo, a member of the Hitler Youth, starts to question his beliefs and blind nationalism. Despite the dark subject matter, Jojo Rabbit is an optimistic comedy that attempts to combat hate with hope.

The clever thing about this show is the way the creators can cycle through lead actors relatively regularly after their character’s stint on the remote Caribbean island of Saint Marie is done. The regular refresh brings potential for new fans as the show is revamped.

Now in its 10th season (and fourth detective inspector), the team – now led by DI Neville (Ralf Little, pictured) – work to solve the disproportionate amount of murder and mayhem that seems to plague this idyllic island. Tonight, the team is baffled when an archaeologist is poisoned during a dig and no evidence is uncovered to prove how it was done.

Here we go again with the ninth season of this addictive charade involving pretend marriages, fame-hungry and/ or plastic surgeryobsessed contestants and a highly optimistic chance at love. In past seasons, there have been a whirlwind of fights, affairs, outbursts and jaw-dropping behaviour overshadowing any tales of everlasting love, and that’s what makes Married At First Sight such a foamy and foolish cocktail; it’s frankly hard to resist.

Guided by relationship “experts” John Aiken, Mel Schilling and Alessandra Rampolla (pictured), the brides and grooms include 28-year-old DJ Jack Millar, Melbourne florist Jessica Seracino and American-born personal trainer Andrew Davis.

Macksville to host NSW Veterans Cricket over 65’s NSW Veterans Cricket is proud to announce that Macksville, Port Macquarie, Wauchope, Camden Haven, Kempsey and Tuncurry have been chosen to host the 2022 Over 65’s State Titles from Monday January 31 through
