Local beekeepers fear the future with varroa mite

By Ned COWIE IT has been several months since a beekeeper in the Macleay Valley discovered varroa mites during a routine alcohol wash of his bees.

This would mark the beginning of a varroa crisis for beekeepers in the Kempsey region, with the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) eventually declaring the transition from eradication to management of the varroa mite in NSW as of 19 September 2023.

Bus crashes into traffic lights in Macksville

q The bus came to rest outside the front entrance to Macksville Mitre 10.

By Ned COWIE LAST Wednesday afternoon, a Mid Coast Coaches bus crashed into traffic lights at the front entrance of Mitre 10 in Macksville.

According to a spokesperson from Mid Coast Coaches, the incident was caused by a mechanical malfunction.

“When this happens, as a safety mechanism, the vehicle’s brakes are automatically activated.

“The driver’s training is to direct the bus into the gutter if the brakes should ever lock,” the spokesperson said.

“There were cars stopped at the lights so the driver made the decision to take out the traffic lights and take the bus over the gutter rather than risk running over cars stopped at the lights or swerving into oncoming traffic.”

No passengers apart from the driver were on the bus at the time.

He was taken to hospital for observation but returned home the same day.

Nobody else was injured in the incident although the traffic lights were knocked to the ground and there appeared to be minor damage to the front entrance of Macksville Mitre 10.

This entrance was closed temporarily although the store continued to operate using its Star Street entrance.

Sue has supported river health and citizen science projects for over thirty years, nationally and internationally.

Sue is looking forward to working alongside Nambucca Valley residents to test five sites along the Nambucca River on a monthly basis.

“After we collect, synthesise and analyse the water quality data, we will run several events to report our findings to the community,” Sue said.

These events offer an excellent opportunity to educate and raise public

awareness about some of the issues impacting the Nambucca River, including agricultural runoff, sewer leaks, and stormwater problems.

Project Managers Elizabeth Newman and Beverly Gibbs have lived in the area for many years and are committed to protecting the Nambucca River.

“The waterway is incredibly important and significant to Gumbaynggirr people with their continuous connection to land, waters and culture,” Beverly Gibbs said.

“Our river is also highly valued by tourists, oyster farmers, fishing enthusiasts, local swimmers and residents.”

Nambucca River is likely to be further impacted by climate change in coming years.

“Collecting and uploading long term water quality data to the NSW Waterwatch database will provide Nambucca Shire with baseline data and allow us to monitor any change,” Elizabeth said.

The Save Nambucca River Group and OzGREEN share a common commitment to fostering community engagement and collaboration around river health.

Together, the project will create a network of informed and empowered individuals who will play an active role in the protection of the Nambucca River, ensuring that it remains protected and preserved for many generations to come.

such as the USA and Canada.

In June of 2022 the mite was detected around the Port of Newcastle and the NSW Department of Primary Industries began its fight to eradicate the pest.

Bees in the declared red zones of NSW (One to three kilometres from where mites had been discovered) were euthanised either by the DPI or by keepers themselves.

“With the Kempsey discovery, more than 20 percent of the NSW industry was affected and eradication as a strategy became untenable,” Kempsey beekeeper Darryl Brenton explained.

While many hoped this policy could eradicate the mite it was a heart-breaking and livelihood threatening policy for many experienced and invested beekeepers who found themselves in these

zones.

Looking forward, many beekeepers fear the mite’s introduction will drive costs to beekeepers up and make apiculture in Australia unviable.

“All the extra measures and checks we have to do take time and nobody pays us extra for our time,” Darryl said.

He found mites in some of his hives and although one apiary was euthanised, others were clean.

Rather than take on the extra work for hives in the Kempsey region, he voluntarily surrendered most of them to concentrate on his other hives outside the declared Management Emergency Zone.

According to a Varroa Emergency Response hotline, current procedure is that beekeepers are expected to notify the DPI when mites are

discovered and perform a test to determine the percentage of mites in their hives.

Once this is communicated to the DPI a decision will be made on exactly how to assist beekeepers to suppress the mites.

Monica Rich, Secretary of the Mid North Coast Amateur Beekeepers Association, also fears for the industry.

“Screening for mites is time-consuming and is recommended to be carried out every sixteen weeks.

“If mites are found, measures such as miticide strips contain pesticides which come with their own challenges.”

She wonders whether

the industry in Australia can survive the increased costs and complications the varroa mite brings.

In New Zealand, beekeepers and the industry in general have been dealing with the mites since they were first discovered in 2000.

According to figures listed on the NZ Ministry for Primary Industries website, the industry has fully recovered after an initial period of adjustment and in 2022 honey export volumes had grown to $449 million, up from around $100 million in 2010 and $300 million in 2016.

“It’s early days still,” said Monica, “the information changes regularly so we will just have to wait and see how it goes.”

EPA involved as concerns mount over sediment control in Oakes State Forest ONE of the major arguments mounted by the Kalang River Forest Alliance (KRFA) against logging in Oakes State Forest (SF) is the perceived danger to water sources.

The Alliance, who claim that logging Oakes SF is "irresponsible", have lodged numerous complaints to the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA), and have only recently received a response.

As previously reported in News Of The Area, Forestry Corporation NSW (FCNSW) has been constructing road works to and in Oakes State Forest and the Alliance is very concerned that these works could result in contamination of creeks and rivers.

Under Coastal Integrated Forestry Operations Approvals (CIFOA), forest management in NSW forests is required to be ecologically sustainable.

disturbance of the soils will result in an irreversible water pollution event in the Kalang River”.

“The dust particles are so fine that the resulting sedimentation will smother

all aquatic life, choke the river and degrade water quality and ongoing water security.

“It is clear that the instability of the soils in the Kalang headwaters is totally unsuitable for

any disturbance, let alone industrial scale logging in the headwaters.

“We are seeking an immediate cessation of all road works and an end to logging in Oakes SF.”

The EPA responded, asking for detail about the alleged breaches and reasons why FCNSW might have to vary its plans.

An EPA spokesperson told News Of The Area, “We are reviewing fresh information provided to us about concerns over sediment control in the Oakes State Forest which will form part of upcoming inspections.

“The EPA has a strong compliance and enforcement program for native forestry and takes appropriate action where non-compliance with the law is identified.”

The spokesperson also stated that broad-area habitat searches must be completed

by FCNSW within six months of operations commencing.

A Forestry Corporation spokesperson said it has undertaken road works in Oakes State Forest to improve the roads ahead of a renewable timber harvesting operation.

The spokesperson said the work has been done in line with the rules in the Coastal Integrated Forestry Operations Approval including drainage and

THE Bob Brown Foundation is excited to announce Maagunda Muruygu - Festival for Forests, a vibrant celebration of forests and the need for their protection from logging.

On 4 November 2023, the festival will be hosted at Bellwood Park in Nambucca, featuring a day of music, speeches and community togetherness.

Distinguished guests and speakers at the event will include renowned environmentalist and Bob Brown Foundation founder, Dr Bob Brown.

“It is people power, based on the fact that most Australians want the bulldozers and chainsaws out of native forests, that will save the koalas and greater gliders,” Bob Brown said.

“In doing so, we will also save a deep, important part of our own souls and honour our children’s right to have wild forests as part of their birthright.

“It’s a great feeling, taking action for the forests,” said Mr Brown.

Uncle Micklo Jarrett, a respected Elder of Gumbaynggirr peoples, reiterated the need for people to come together to fight for forests.

“Yanaa dugulla – walk together,” he said.

Doro Babeck, a Bob Brown Foundation NSW Campaigner said, “Native forests are still being logged at an industrial scale in a region that needs protection.

“The community is hurting, everyone is hurting, because the government ploughs on with destruction.

“We want to give people a reprieve from the stresses of hearing the chainsaws and seeing wildlife's homes

being destroyed.

“This festival is a moment to recharge, reconnect and have fun.

“Our event will be an opportunity to celebrate the region's commendable conservation efforts.”

City of Coffs Harbour Councillor Jonathan Cassell has been helping to bring the free event to life.

Mr Cassell spoke about the importance of celebrating Coffs Coast forests.

“So many people love our forests as places of recreation and this free event is a way to celebrate the Coffs Coast's forests from the hills to the sea.

“The festival will be at Bellwood Park on the banks of the Nambucca River which begins its life in places like the threatened Oakes State Forest and Gumbaynggirr National Park.

“The health of the Nambucca River is determined by what happens in the forests upstream and this impacts our quality of life in towns across the Coffs Coast.

“I was contacted by Uncle Micklo after the Bob Brown Foundation forest rally in Coffs Harbour in August and Micklo said we’ve got to have the next one in Nambucca.

“So, I said 'okay let’s try' and now it's here.

“It’s going to be a fantastic community event.”

Many hands make light work for beekeepers

DESPITE the increased burden of measures imposed to suppress the spread of varroa mite in NSW, the Mid North Coast Amateur Beekeepers Association recognises the value of a shared work-load as they team up to meet these challenges.

Their monthly meetings not only serve as workshops and updates on the latest apiculture information, but many hands make light work of newly imposed measures such as alcohol washes for varroa mites, one of the recommended methods recommended by the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) in the hopes of managing and suppressing the pests.

The Association falls under the Amateur Beekeepers Australia umbrella and it meets formally on the second Sunday of each month at members’ houses.

Beekeeping is one of the oldest agricultural practices on earth, dating back to prehistoric times.

Images of Egyptian beekeepers are testament to the timelessness of this tradition.

To become a beekeeper is to commit to a lifetime of ongoing learning as bees face a range of diseases, pests and can be farmed in such varied ways.

Some of the club’s members keep European honeybees, others have the native Australian stingless species and some like Monica Rich, the Association’s

Secretary, keep both.

However, Monica said, everyone is taking steps to keep their hives healthy, particularly now as they look to a future with the presence of varroa mites in Australia.

With Australia abandoning attempts to eradicate varroa mite in September, and moving to a management approach, there are increased checks and measures to be taken by beekeepers.

“Luckily for us, our current President also works at the NSW DPI so we get the latest information as soon as it is issued.

Community mural and dance project launched

By JEN HETHERINGTON THE inexhaustible team from Stuarts Point Art House, located at the truly quaint Anglican Church at 25 Ocean Avenue, have developed and launched a Community Mural and Dance Project that commenced on the afternoon of Monday 16 October.

Prominent local artist and project coordinator Elaine Carmady invited local residents to “create a magical mural by community for community”.

Beyond the launch, the interactive project will progress over the next sessions.

Monday October 30 from 3.30 5pm Monday November 6 from 3.30 5pm Friday November 10 3.30 - 5pm.

Accomplished dance facilitator Alfira O’Sullivan told NOTA, “We would love your input, your special touch; come along to paint a leaf on our Muurrbay tree and be part of our community artwork mural with Elaine Carmady as well as joining in for some fun group body percussion and traditional dance which will culminate in a performance for community.”

The Mural reveal and performance is to be held on Saturday November 11 at Stuarts Point Hall from 5.30pm, and will welcome guest artists Grace Hickey and Hugh Scott Murray who invite the community to gather and jam for a magical musical night.

WITH water deliveries taking weeks to be filled, when Eungai Preschool realised they were out of water last week, staff feared the facility would have to close.

“It’s very hard to cart enough water to flush toilets and wash hands all day,” complained the Preschool’s Director, Anna Veres.

“Preschool enrolments have grown from fifteen children and three staff to currently 68 children and ten staff,” she explained.

The Preschool was created over 40 years ago when parents at the local school commissioned the NSW Department of Education to donate the schoolmaster’s house to use for early education.

It has been a stalwart fixture in the lives of local children and the community since then.

Students, teachers and cleaning staff use water for cleaning, flushing toilets and drinking.

However, with such a shortage in the valley, it could have taken weeks to get their tank refilled.

The Preschool boasts a large water tank which has been recently decorated and restored.

“This year we have been having trouble keeping up with the demand (for water),” said Anna.

In a last-ditch attempt to keep the school open, the Preschool reached out to the community for help.

Daniel Hiron, who runs a water carrier service in the area, answered their pleas and promptly arrived with a full load of water.

When the Preschool director asked him the cost, his answer was “no charge”.

He explained that he had attended the school when he was a little boy and was very happy to give back to the facility.

Friday Feed supports those doing it tough

By Mick BIRTLES THE Nambucca Youthie Cafe opened its van and its heart to the community last Friday evening, 20 October, to kickoff a special program that promised a hearty meal for everyone who came along.

Officially labelled the ‘Friday Feed’, this initiative is aimed at providing a free and nutritious meal, particularly for those who may be facing

Ready, Set, Go program culminates in incredible live performance

The Nambucca Youthie is located at 48 Ridge St in Nambucca Heads, just across the road from the Red School.

Rather than teaching, the program emphasised mentoring and featured three mentors with vast experience in the music industry - Dee Bee Bishop, Alicia Parry and

Rob Torelli.

These mentors provided invaluable guidance, helping these aspiring musicians find their own voices in the world of music.

Liv Parker of Arts Mid North Coast, the coordinator of the program, told News Of The Area, “It has been amazing to see the journey these young people have been on and how they have grown as musicians and how they have formed many wonderful friendships.

“The standard of their performances this afternoon is

a testament to the dedication of our wonderful mentors.

“I am so grateful for their efforts and also very grateful to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation who’s funding makes this program a reality.”

A unique aspect of the Ready, Set, Go Youth Music Program is that it addresses drug and alcohol issues within the music industry and includes a guest speaker to discuss these challenges, offering valuable insights and guidance to the young musicians and preparing them for the real-world challenges that often come with a career in music.

Sunday's performances were the ultimate test of Ready, Set, Go participants' ability to perform a piece from start to finish, in front of a live audience.

The crowd, filled with family and friends, erupted into applause as the talented

youths gave it their all.

After many years of hard work my husband and I have finally bought our dream home which is a waterfront in a lovely location.

A couple of months ago a long-distance friend who I haven't seen in about 20 years sent me a message wanting to reconnect.

Now she's sent me another message saying she's heading our way for the summer holidays and would love to spend some quality time staying with us.

I've got no idea what to say.

I haven't even met her kids.

Brian appointed Paul as executor of his will, as he thought having his four children as executors would just be too many cooks in the kitchen.

Brian has considerable assets which are to be split equally amongst his children.

After Brian passes-away, Paul retains a solicitor to assist him with obtaining a grant of probate and to provide advice regarding the administration of the estate.

However, while the grant of probate was being processed by the Court, Paul decides to sell Brian’s classic toy collection, without discussing his intentions with his siblings.

Paul invites over a few of Brian’s friends who are also classic toy enthusiasts.

Paul is keen to sell the toys and accepts the amounts offered by Brian’s mates.

When Paul tells his siblings that he has sold the toys and now wants to divide the proceeds of sale according to the will, things get very hot in the kitchen.

Amy and the other siblings seek legal advice, alleging that Paul has sold the toys well below market value.

This resulted in a lawsuit filed by the aggrieved beneficiaries, alleging that Paul as the executor, had failed in his duty to protect the estate's assets and maximise its value.

By selling the property below its market value, the Court held Paul had failed to properly realise the assets of the estate, thereby breaching his fiduciary duty to the beneficiaries.

This scenario serves as a potent reminder that executors have a legal obligation to manage the estate with utmost care and integrity, while acting in the best interest of the beneficiaries. If they fail to uphold these responsibilities, executors can be held liable for any losses that the estate or the beneficiaries suffer as a result.

Local sporting grants kick off SPORTING clubs and associations across the Nambucca Valley are being encouraged to apply for funding under the NSW Government’s Local Sport Grants Program.

The Program provides $4.65 million funding to NSW sporting organisations with $50,000 available per electorate and grants up to $20,000 available to individual clubs.

In 2022/23 $3.5 million was awarded for 592 projects across NSW, including

IN his October newsletter to the people of Cowper, Pat Conaghan devotes a whole page to the current housing crisis.

Whilst acknowledging the immense pressures caused by skyrocketing house prices in the region, and recognising the initiatives that the Labor government is undertaking, our MP’s main focus, however, lies elsewhere. The issue which Pat Conaghan wants to draw our attention to is, oddly, “foreign ownership” of Australia’s residential property, which currently sits at about four percent.

There are no fewer than eight references to “foreign” and “foreigners” in his opinion piece.

And he doesn’t forget to throw in a reference to high immigration for

good measure.

Banning foreign ownership of residential property in the Cowper electorate would not make the slightest difference to the housing crisis in our communities, and our Member of Parliament must know this.

What our area urgently needs is significant investment in social housing to deal with chronic waiting lists.

Sadly, the Coalition parties have always been opposed to the spending of taxpayers’ money to tackle this problem.

Indeed, during its twelve years in office in NSW, the Coalition offloaded almost $3.6 billion of public housing stock and land.

In Australia, social housing comprises just 4.4 percent of the housing stock, compared to 16.7 percent in the UK and 34.1 percent in the Netherlands. Increasing our social housing stock is surely

VALLEYS Cricket and the Coffs Colts have both been victorious during the latest round of Coffs Harbour District Cricket Association’s first grade season.

Valleys Cricket won their second match in a row to start the season, beating Diggers Cricket Club by one wicket in their one dayer at Fitzroy Oval.

Diggers won the toss and elected to bat, and were bowled out for 120.

Jamison Dawes produced a sensational spell, taking 5/17 from his 7 overs, while Reuben Carey top scored for

Following the March 2021, February 2022 and June 2022 severe storms and flooding, the Nambucca Valley Local Government Area (LGA) received Natural Disaster Declarations resulting in the State and Commonwealth providing funding support to help with the cost of cleaning up and restoring damaged road and essential public assets.

The majority of Council’s road network has been impacted to some extent, which has resulted in an unprecedented amount of repairs to undertake. Council is aware there are numerous potholes, corrugations and gravel loss on some roads.

• Council has recorded 67 significant landslip events that will require remediation through the LGA, with an estimated repair cost in the order of $40million and further information is available on landslip damages via an interactive map located on Council’s website by following the Disaster Recovery link.

• Since the March 2021 flooding, the damage bill to date has been in excess of $4.4million predominately directed toward our emergency relief works on the road network. These works are still on-going.

In this vibrant voyage taking in the centuries-old spice regions of the world, the Absolutely Fabulous star emanates a warmth and enthusiasm that really does spice up every scene. Across four episodes, premiering tonight, the riches of the world’s spice history, from Indonesia and Zanzibar, to India and Madagascar, is explored. In her “most epic voyage yet”, Lumley’s first stop is Indonesia’s Banda Islands, once the only place in the world that the coveted nutmeg grew. With pepper, vanilla and cinnamon informing Lumley’s upcoming destinations, it’s an educational feast.

It’s a lesson in bold, brash confidence and how to sport skimpy swimming attire with the same nonchalance as wearing a tracksuit. In this dating show, everyone is unsurprisingly young and beautiful, but they also have attitude and sass to boot.

Returning to the sunny climes of Mallorca, Spain, along with breezily outspoken host Sophie Monk, this season’s contenders – five men and five women – have signed up to find love, but there’s a juicy power shift in store with the girls seizing control of the sun-kissed search for connection. The singles include Kirra (who made a splash defending sister Bronte earlier this year on MAFS), along with long-time single Ben – who is ready for marriage at 22.

Backed by The Welcome to Central Goldfields pilot project, AMES Australia and the local community, and hosted by the lovable Myf Warhurst, this engrossing three-part series follows eight diverse households’ move to small-town Maryborough, Victoria. Like many Aussie regional towns, Maryborough is ageing, with a severe skills shortage, but these city-dwellers are ready to join and reinvigorate the community in this three-month-long social experiment.

ROUND one of the North Coast Surf Boat Series kicked off at Scotts Head on Saturday 21 October before Sunday’s events were cancelled due to unfavourable conditions.

The beneficiary this year was “Shore Track” a local support organization for disadvantaged youth. Eight hundred and fifty dollars was

raised by members that will be formally presented next week.
