Emily told News Of The Area about their time in the Nambucca Valley.

“Andrew and I spent the afternoon driving south from our accommodation at the CBD Motor Inn in Coffs Harbour to the beautiful seaside town of Nambucca Heads where we stayed at the colourful Cubana Resort…I will be back to stay here on a holiday.

“We were travelling here for the third concert stop on our tour for Music in the Regions.

“With all polling booth and pre-poll numbers now in, and a large percentage of postal votes now counted and assigned, it is time for me to officially agree with all the media reports and call the seat of Cowper as a ‘Nationals Retain’,” said Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan, who will serve his second term as Cowper MP. “I am humbled to be given a second opportunity to represent the people of Cowper.

“I have learned an incredible amount over these past three years and have listened to views from all sides.

“I will be taking those views and using them to form decisions for the electorate moving forward.”

Mr Conaghan thanked his election opponents for their “passionate advocacy” on key electorate issues throughout the campaign.

“Every candidate has the community at heart, first and foremost, and for that every candidate should be applauded and congratulated.

“I do not take the privilege of representing the best region in Australia lightly.

“I am proud to be able to continue to represent our region in the Federal Parliament and will continue to fight for a fair-go for Cowper,” he said.

In a concession statement released on Tuesday, Independent candidate Caz Heise said she had always accepted that beating Mr Conaghan would not be easy given he held Cowper by a margin of more than eleven percent.

“It’s been an incredible privilege to run as the Independent Candidate in the seat of Cowper and I am extremely heartened by the movement we have created in our region and the very close race we were able to mount,” Ms Heise said.

“I am relieved to see the values of the people of Cowper are more closely reflected in the government of Australia again.”

Ms Heise thanked the “generous and wonderful” volunteers who had worked with her throughout the campaign.

people whose generous donations enabled us to run a dynamic campaign which dramatically slashed the Nationals margin in Cowper.”

Cowper has now gone from being a safe Nationals seat to a marginal seat, with a significant swing against the sitting member of around of 6.54 percent.

Throughout the campaign Mr Conaghan acknowledged that some national issues might have contributed to the drop in his votes.

Ms Heise campaigned on issues of climate change and integrity, and came very close to winning.

Despite a campaign to paint Ms Heise, and other ‘teal’ Independents, as puppets of Climate 200 and founder Simon Holmes à Court, her media manager, Graeme Singleton, said the campaign was a real community-based effort, with more than 700 local donors to Ms Heise’s campaign and more than 800 volunteers.

Ms Heise told her supporters on election night, “I’ve looked for people all my life who are different and want to change the world and now I’ve found them in ‘Caz4Cowper’.”

She said she will run again, commenting, “It’s about the beautiful region that we live in and the planet we live on.”

“Our program, Suite mágica, combines our instruments of classical guitar and harp in a recital program full of beauty, versatility, and energy exploring music from Granados and Ravel and new works by Australian composers Elena KatsChernin and Ross Edwards.

“Our performance took place at the Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club, not the usual kind of venue for us classical musos.”

The event included a three-course dinner and matching wines paired with a

classical music performance.

“Andrew and I performed two sets between courses for a warm, inviting, and very receptive audience,” Emily said.

“The room was filled and we even had some new friends surprise us by coming along all the way from La Hacienda 101 in Emerald Beach, the best Mexican this American has ever had in Australia.

“We were also treated to dinner and sampled some of the sticky wine and cheesecake after our performance - seriously highquality food and exceptional service.

“Andrew and I stuck around after the concert for a couple of reasons one being the fact that the driveway off the island was underwater because of the king tide, but also because we were able to chat with the patrons, sign CDs and answer lots of questions about our instruments and our lives in classical music.

“The audience was absolutely fabulous and we really hope an event like this can happen again soon.”

Andrew and Emily also performed 'Suite mágica' at the Bowraville Theatre on Sunday 15 May as part of

'Wajaarrgu Darruyaygamgu - For Healing and Country', a community event for bushfire affected people of the Nambucca Valley.

Commenting on being a part of the event, Emily said, "How special for Andrew and I to bring our music to be a part of this healing process."

Music in the Regions has been seed funded by Create NSW to extend the reach of classical music into regional areas, and to create opportunities for musicians and audiences while developing new touring routes and activating interesting new venues.

By Tara CAMPBELL ANTHONY Albanese has been declared the 31st Prime Minister of Australia.

The son of a single parent who grew up in public housing, Mr Albanese has reached the pinnacle of his government career after 26 years in the parliament.

"It is an incredible honour," Mr Albanese told reporters after leaving his house to head to speak at a party event.

Mr Albanese said he hoped his story would inspire a future generation of Australian leaders.

"My mother dreamt of a better life for me, and I hope that my journey in life inspires Australians to reach for the stars.

"I want Australia to continue to be a country that, no matter where you live, who you worship, who you love or what your last name is, places no restrictions on your journey in life,” he said.

Anthony Albanese entered politics in 1996 when he was elected as the Federal Member for Grayndler and in 2006 earned the title of Labor’s Shadow Minister for the Environment.

He eventually became Australia’s first Federal Infrastructure Minister and in 2013, under the new Rudd Labor Government, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and finally, unanimously in 2019, Anthony was elected as the new Leader of the Australian Labor Party.

Growing up, Albanese said that it wasn’t easy; being the first person in his family to finish school, let alone university.

“When I was about twelve years old, I helped to organise a rent strike that kept my mother's public housing property from being sold off to

developers - a first step towards the world of Justin Trudeau described the two countries as "being close friends" and said he was looking politics.”

He got involved in student politics and forward to tackling global issues together.

"I'm looking forward to building on that with aged 22, he was elected president of Young Labor, the party's youth wing, and worked as a you, moving forward with progressive ideas, research officer under the economic reformist tackling climate change, and delivering results for government of Bob Hawke, Labor's longest- people in both our countries," he said.

Albanese’s election sees the first change in serving Prime Minister.

In 2021, a car crash nearly killed Albanese power since 2013, where the last Labor Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was defeated by Liberal Tony and he says that it changed his life.

Teachers making maths fun with Eddie Woo

By Rachel MCGREGORALLEN EDDIE Woo, the leader of Mathematics Growth at the NSW Department of Education, teacher at Cherrybrook High School and well-known mathematics Youtuber, visited Nambucca Heads High School on Tuesday 24 May. Part of this visit saw Eddie running a session with Year 7 students, where he demonstrated his love of teaching mathematics with the aim to create enthusiasm for learning maths in the pupils he teaches.

During the session Mr Woo reflected back on how he learnt mathematics in school.

Just like many of us this was usually straight from the textbook.

For many students this method of teaching mathematics does not make learning easy, whereas the approach that Mr Woo and the

NSW Department of Education (NSWDOE) are implementing, is aimed at making the learning interesting by making it fun and engaging.

Mr Woo explained the NSWDOE’s Mathematics Growth Strategy to News Of The Area.

“The overarching purpose simply is that we want students to have the best possible experience of mathematics.

“The Mathematics Growth team is about supporting teachers to use engaging and effective teaching practices in the classroom so that kids are interested in maths and are also equipped to learn.

“We want to have students who want to go to the highest level of mathematics possible.

“They are not going to do that if they are not motivated,” Mr Woo said.

Simon Bogert, a trainer in the NSW Mathematics Growth Team currently working from Nambucca Heads High, said the NSWDOE’s Mathematics Strategy is aimed at “helping with ways to engage students

in mathematics”.

“To make it playful in a different way,” Mr Bogert said.

“There are many different ways to deliver the maths curriculum.

“It is always good to get an expert like Eddie Woo to help design this delivery.

“It is great to have someone to promote that mathematics can be fun.”

That is certainly what Mr Woo was promoting to the Year 7 students.

Mr Woo said to the

attentive and focused group, “Mathematics is about playfulness and exploration.”

The students were provided with a game, number boxes, and the students were all completely engaged and having fun, with the time for the game allowed during the session.

Mr Woo followed this fun game with an exploration of how people keep climbing Mt Everest, presenting the mathematics about the height of Mt Everest and the

relationship this had to the reduction in oxygen.

He suggested that it was human nature to want to explore, that this is a natural instinctive behaviour.

Connecting this to mathematics learning, Mr Woo suggested that if a student feels lost when learning something mathematical, rather than this meaning they aren’t good at mathematics, it meant that they were exploring maths, and in fact learning.

Mr Woo encouraged all

the students to have fun and explore when they were engaged with mathematics.

The current NSW Mathematics Growth Strategy will see the team working with schools in and around the Nambucca Valley, plus other schools across the state, for two years to provide professional learning to teachers in both secondary and primary schools to improve mathematics teaching and student outcomes.

Bellingen Cup Race Day at Bowraville THE Nambucca River Jockey Club is pleased to confirm that the ‘Diggers Tavern Bellingen Cup’ race meeting will be held at Bowraville on 4 June 2022.

The Jockey Club is delighted to partner with Diggers Tavern to

Carers caring for carers

THE Zeny’s House of Photography charity Baby Photo Competition recently raised $700 for the Nambucca Heads Everlasting Carers Support Group.

Carers Rosemary Porter and Fran Bishop were all smiles when Baby Photo Competition winner Braxton Atkins and business owner Zeny Paraiso-Ward presented the cheque.

In the background, Bev Reedy, coordinator of the volunteer run Nambucca Heads Everlasting Carers Support Group, was also smiling.

“I want to thank the community from the bottom of my heart,” Bev said.

“Thank you to all the parents who entered their bubs into the competition.

“This money is going to mean a lot to the carers.

“I’m planning a relaxation day, which is not something that carers get to do much.”

News Of The Area spoke with Ms Porter about her role as a carer, a role that has seen her relocate to Nambucca Heads so that she can care for her elderly parents.

Ms Porter shared how her mum fell and broke her clavicle, followed shortly after

by her dad needing to receive radiation for skin cancer and then having a fall himself.

Ms Porter then went to a local care facility to organise some respite care for her parents and broke down owing to being overwhelmed by the paperwork and lack of support she was feeling.

She then called Bev Reedy for help, having recently found the Everlasting Carers Support Group, and was offered support to help her through a hard time.

Ms Reedy organised for Ms Porter to receive assistance with the paperwork, provided gentle advice, and in this way took a little of the hardship away.

Ms Reedy said, “We want to offer carers assistance to access programs and information that will help them.

“We want to help and work to share ideas for what the group should be doing, and offer a safe supportive space.”

Carer Fran Bishop has only recently joined the group, and has done so to connect with others.

Ms Bishop has been caring for her husband, who has dementia, for nine years.

Originally from overseas, neither Ms Bishop or her husband have family close by to ask for help.

because I feel that I need to talk to other carers about their problems.

Voluntary Assisted Dying Passes in NSW

THE Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill has passed in the NSW Parliament.

On Thursday, following a mammoth late-night debate, New South Wales became the final state in Australia to pass voluntary assisted dying legislation.

Six months ago the Bill passed the state’s lower house, and officially passed just after 12:30pm on Thursday May 19.

The Bill was spearheaded by

Independent MP Alex Greenwich with 28 cosponsors last year after a series of failed past attempts.

He said the bill marked a moment in which NSW “finally passed a threshold of honesty and compassion”.

“Honesty that not all people die well, and compassion that people with advanced and cruel terminal illnesses will have the same end-of-care options as those in every other state,” he said.

The Bill limits access to voluntary assisted

dying to people with terminal illnesses who will die within six months, or twelve months in the case of a person with a neurodegenerative condition experiencing unbearable suffering.

The person must be found to have capacity to make the decision to go ahead voluntarily without duress, and the application would be assessed by two medical practitioners.

Supporters had hoped the bill would pass on Wednesday night, but after a large-scale debate in

which opponents moved some 90 amendments in a late-night filibuster attempt, it passed the upper house on Thursday afternoon.

One of the Bill’s opponents, Employee Relations Minister Damien Tudehope, said the Bill “betrayed” people suffering from a terminal illness.

“Some will say this is a great moment for NSW,” he said.

“I will leave here today thinking this is a dark day for our state.”

Nambucca Valley Radio turns 30!

By Karen GRIBBIN OUR local radio station, 2NVR Nambucca Valley Radio, will be celebrating 30 years of broadcasting on 5 June.

A community comes to life when they can listen to their fellow residents; whether they play classical, jazz, country, rock and old-time music, sport

and interviews, or even radio plays.

Most of all community radio is a connection between the presenter and the greater community.

In 1984 a few local residents said ‘yes’ and exposed themselves to the rigorous procedure of obtaining a broadcasting licence and starting a radio station.

2NVR co-founder Rob Turnell said, “It all started with

a few locals who believed it was paramount to grasp the opportunity to establish such an important social connection in our Valley.”

With vigour and determination, a public meeting was called in the Bowraville community hall.

The support was there and the hall was packed to the rafters.

Music fundraiser raises $2831 for flood victim

IN the recent wake of the North Coast floods, our great Aussie spirit has been out front when it comes to helping our mates in need.

One Mid North Coast musician, the exceptionally talented Heather Rose, has taken that spirit to the next level coming up with a very special way to help.

Heather knew older women of a certain age were the highest growing homeless population in the country, and decided one woman who had lost everything in the floods would be the recipient of any funds raised.

And so, the two-hour feast of music called ‘Women for Women of the Big Wet’ was born, with the event taking place at the Music Station Macksville on May 1.

News Of The Area spoke to Heather Rose, who said, “I really wanted to help someone with music.

“I put my ideas out there and most people I contacted said yes they’d help, and off we went.”

After contacting a Coraki pharmacy, she found Tilly (name changed), a woman who had lost everything to the devastation of the recent flooding.

Before the doors even opened the event had raised $1600.00 from all over Australia.

“We received raffle donations from all over Australia,” Heather said.

“I was blown away by the response, we even had people coming up in the street to make donations,” said Heather.

The event raised a total of $2831.20 with 100 percent going to Tilly.

“The best thing was, after talking with Tilly, the money was transferred to her account and could be used by her instantly.”

Heather would like to thank all those who attended, bought raffle tickets, and made donations.

This was a rigorous process culminating in a tribunal of legal essence.

With community support a temporary licence was granted by the Australian Broadcasting Authority.

A board of management was formed to establish

premises, a studio, and prepare willing presenters who were aware of the legalities of broadcasting.

The next step was to test the broadcast.

With no transmission in Bowraville, the committee went up Yarrahapinni Mountain and camped for three days and nights to test.

“Being on the mountain at night was hair-raising, but we

all had fun,” said Rob Turnell.

As a local community radio station, 2NVR performs an essential service for our region, connecting rural and remote areas with emergency services in times of bushfires and flooding events.

Today the radio station broadcasts from Tewinga with three studios, excellent facilities, and a safe environment to provide training and support for its members while welcoming new people with interest.

2NVR’s Birthday Celebration will take place on 5 June at the Bowraville Theatre between 12pm – 5pm.

There will be live music all afternoon and an opportunity to catch up with the pioneers of the radio station.

Everyone is welcome.

Finger food will be provided by 2NVR and a coffee van will be available outside.

You are welcome to bring BYO drinks.

The celebrations will be broadcast live on 105.9fm and streamed via www.2nvr.org. au.

The Tewinga studios in Rodeo Drive will be open from 10:30 am to 11:30 am on the day for any visitors who want to check out the studios.

Festival of Small Halls coming to Stuarts Point THE Festival of Small Halls Resilience Tour will kick off locally with renowned songwriters Ash Bell and Sara Tindly as well as emotive troubadour Melanie Horsnell set to take

the stage in Stuarts Point on Sunday.

2022-23 contract with the NSW Government approved, is celebrating its achievements

The NSW Department of Education recently released the results of its annual student outcomes survey, providing an important snapshot of what students thought of the college.

Results showed 92 percent of students who trained at the college recently said they were satisfied or very satisfied with the quality of the training.

Leanne Statham, 58, studied a four-week work ready program at NV college in October and November 2020.

She went on to complete a Certificate III in Individual Support in 2021.

Ms Statham is now working as an Assistant in Nursing at Legacy’s aged care facility in Coffs Harbour.

“I was made redundant in 2020 as a result of COVID-19 and so I needed to re-train and enter a new industry to gain employment,” she said.

“Through the suggestion of a friend, I visited Legacy to talk about a potential job in their laundry and by the end of the interview, I ended up being offered a traineeship as a carer instead.

“I studied at NV College in Macksville and found both my managers at work and the college staff to be very supportive and invested in my outcome.

“I enjoy working with elderly residents in Legacy’s nursing home. I love the difference it makes in their lives – and it makes me feel good too.”

Ms Statham has been nominated for the state trainee

awards, due to be held in November.

Earlier in May she was interviewed by Training Services NSW representatives as a finalist for these awards.

“The college has grown over the years and now it is the aged-care specialist in training, plus a provider of great hospitality and food, home and community care and first aid training courses.

“Having our contract with the NSW Government’s Smart and Skilled program renewed means we are able to continue providing fee-free or low-fee training opportunities to locals,

THE Watt Creek Cycleway Project, an investment by the NSW Government, will soon be completed according to Nambucca Valley Mayor Rhonda Hoban.

The Project is funded by a grant received from Transport for NSW. Mayor Hoban explained to News Of The Area why the project had been put on pause.

“When Council staff commenced negotiations with property owners for the acquisition of property frontages it became apparent that some properties extended into the former Pacific Highway and there had been no

adjustment to land titles as the highway alignment had changed over the years.

“This created delays and some additional costs but in recognition of the problem Transport for NSW provided the additional funding to rectify the issue.”

According to Mayor Hoban, Council has now finalised negotiations with remaining property owners and arrangements will soon be made to complete the cycleway.

“A commencement and completion date will be dependent on weather conditions.”

The cycleway, when completed, will run unhindered from Nambucca Heads to Upper Warrell Creek Rd, Macksville.

A soggy but successful Bellingen Show

UNDER incredibly testing conditions the Bellingen Show has been heralded a success by organisers despite inundating rains forcing the show committee to cancel Sunday’s programmed activities.

In the weeks leading up to the Show, the committee made the difficult decision to cancel the cattle section

and postpone the horse competition recognising the need to put the wellbeing and safety of the animals and their owners first and foremost.

Saturday’s show activities went ahead mud and all, with local GP Dr Trevor Cheney officially opening the show on Saturday afternoon.

Free show entry for all and a free shuttle bus was offered to ferry people across the river

The new Artisan Tent was a huge success, with visitors enjoying demonstrations all day as well as having the chance to get their hands dirty making a pot or tie-dyed bag.

From beekeeping to weaving, lead lighting, mosaics, printmaking and felting, there was time to chat with makers and pick up a purchase.

Always a highlight, the Pavilion and EJ Mantova Memorial Art Competition once again impressed with the sea of talented growers, makers and artists showcasing their wares.

From award winning roses, patchwork, lego and vegetable sculptures, there was a category for everyone.

Around the grounds, Kiera the circus performer entertained the children with giant bubbles, stilts and hula hoops, kids climbed on machinery and were thrilled by the petting zoo and reptile world.

The day’s entertainment was rounded out by the fabulous BackTrack dogs display with adults and kids cheering the dogs on to reach new heights with their amazing trick jumps.

The afternoon ended on a high with Kaya Boom leading a drumming expo which had the audience banging, tapping and clapping along.

Show President Gillian Anderson praised the community, the committee and volunteers for their resilience and community spirit, telling News Of The Area, “When the rain came bucketing down on Saturday night we knew we had to call it, it is such a disappointing thing to do after everyone’s incredible drive to get us to this point.

“But the rousing enthusiasm for the wonderful day on Saturday will not be dampened in the least.”

The Horse competition has been postponed and will be rescheduled to a future date, when the showgrounds are dry and safe.

Charles Davis OAM takes U3A position

WITH an Order of Australia Medal for services to international relations, particularly as a rural development adviser in Cambodia, Charles Davis OAM comes with a lifetime of experience to share with the community in his new role as Vice President of the Nambucca U3A. Charles worked with the NSW Department of Agriculture from 1969 – 1977.

Short Talks is an idea he hopes to bring to U3A. The idea is an open forum of fifteen-minute talks on any subject.

Charles said, “Everyone has an interesting story,

whether it's about themselves, their skills, or life experiences.

“A fifteen-minute time slot gives speakers a short time frame to work with.”

U3A has a list of new courses lined up for the second semester.

There will be fifteenminute talks, motion picture history, exploring classical music, Bucca books, bird watching, sustainability, day trippers, Men’s Shed, and Lesley’s Craft.

Prospective members can attend the Nambucca U3A Open Day on July 5 from 10 am to 12pm at Macksville RSL. “At present we have 280 members and we are looking forward to building on that number with the removal of Covid restrictions,” said U3A President Paul Coe. “Our most successful volunteers seem to be retirees in their early 60s who are fit and capable with a good driving record.”

Not all passengers are elderly people needing transport to medical appointments or shopping centres.

In many isolated areas and places without regular bus services, people who don’t drive or own a car rely on Community Transport to be part of the community.

Many people also take advantage of Community Transport for group social outings.

Marion explains that the need for more volunteers now has come about primarily because, post-Covid, many current volunteers are taking time out now for holidays and travel that had been put off, leaving fewer drivers on the road.

“Our volunteers are an integral part of what we do and we ensure they are trained in all the necessary requirements,” she explains.

“We cover the cost of training, such as First Aid, uniforms and necessary checks, and we supply modern vehicles from our fleet.”

Judith has been a volunteer driver two days a week in the Macksville area for more than seven years, since she retired

as a teacher at the local high school.

“If you like driving and you like chatting, you’ll love this work,” she said.

“What I enjoy most is the interaction with the people I meet.

“Community Transport is a

great group to work for – just great for volunteers.

“The community has given me a lot and now I’m giving back.”

The Community Transport Company started more than 35 years ago and has grown to a team of 125 people and 40

TIMBER producers impacted by hardwood shortages from flood-affected parts of the state will receive support from the NSW Government to secure supplies from outside the region, thanks to a $10 million support package.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said the industry, which generates hundreds

of local jobs, will continue to play a crucial role in rebuilding impacted communities right along the Mid Coast and North Coast.

“The $10 million Hardwood Timber Haulage Subsidy Program will cover the cost for businesses to transport materials from outside their existing supply areas and get them into processing facilities,”

Mr Toole said.

“This funding boost keeps locals in jobs while supplying high-quality timber for the construction industry as we continue to rebuild our floodaffected communities.”

Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW Dugald Saunders said the persistent wet weather has cut off access to state forests where timber is sustainably

harvested.

“The damaged access to forests in NSW may take many months to repair, resulting in low or no harvesting activity and a critical lack of supply of hardwood resources that timber processing facilities would normally rely on,” Mr Saunders said.

“Our hardwood processors need urgent help to haul in good

quality wood from outside the region.

“This investment will mean that eligible processing plants can claim $30 per tonne for the transport of construction grade timber sourced from alternate harvest sites.

“Those businesses can claim up to $500,000, which will help them continue to operate, keep their workers and ensure

builders can push on and rebuild the homes that were destroyed and damaged by floods.

“This assistance will allow us to support the long-term recovery of our flood-impacted regions and will bridge the gap of diminished hardwood resources.”

The Hardwood Timber Haulage Subsidy Program is co-funded by the NSW and Australian Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

“The ban on lightweight single-use bags comes into place from 1 June, and then from November, we’re banning more problematic plastics such as cutlery and plates.

“Single-use plastic is used by many of us for just a few convenient minutes, but it remains in our environment for many years, eventually breaking into microplastics.

“Single-use plastic items and packaging make up 60 percent of all litter in NSW.

“By stopping the supply of problematic plastic in the first place, we’re helping prevent it from entering our environment as litter, or going into landfill.”

According to the NSW Government the ban will prevent almost 2.7 billion items of plastic litter from entering the environment in NSW over the next 20 years.

The lightweight plastic bag ban will begin on June 1, and from November single-use plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery,

plates, bowls and cotton buds will be banned.

As will expanded polystyrene food ware and cups, plus rinse-off personal care products containing plastic microbes.

This ban will also include ‘compostable’ and ‘bioplastic’ alternatives of the above items, owing to the fact that they don’t biodegrade unless they’re treated in an industrial composting facility.

This creates just as much

of a problem as conventional plastic.

A comprehensive retailer education campaign will be run by the National Retail Association (NRA) to support small businesses to be ready for the change.

Minister for Small Business Eleni Petinos said, “The NSW Government has worked with stakeholders to support small businesses to understand how they will be affected, how to comply with new laws and what

alternatives they can use to single use plastics.

“Through the NRA, we’re running a retailer education campaign, conducting store visits, and providing online webinars and resources to help businesses make the adjustment away from single-use plastics.”

The NRA has a free hotline 1800 844 946 to offer businesses, community organisations and consumers advice on single-use plastics bans.

First ever Youth Girls Under 13 rep team announced

AFL North Coast has reached another milestone in its 40-year history, with the announcement of the first ever North Coast Force Youth Girls Under 13 representative team.

The introduction of a second Youth Girls age group this season has provided the opportunity to field the Under 13 girls only team, which complements the Youth Girls Under 17 team within the local talent pathway.

This new age group has seen former players return to the sport now that they can play girls only football, and has also attracted a whole

wave of new participants to the code.

With the North Coast Force acting as the first step in the pathway to the Sydney Swans Academy, the players in the newly announced Youth Girls Under 13 rep team are on their way to becoming the region's next crop of AFLW players.

The first Youth Girls Under 13 representative team comes on the back of AFL North Coast introducing a new Under 14 Youth Girls competition this season.

Community Football Manager, Paul Taylor, said that the formation of the rep team had come about much quicker than planned.

"We definitely had plans

to field an Under 13 girls rep team this year, but expected that we would have to wait until half way through the season once the girls had played more games and had the chance to realise how much they love footy and just how good they are," he said.

"When we called for trials for the mixed Under 13 team in early April, we were overwhelmed with the number of girls who nominated for selection.

“Since the club season has started, we've seen the interest in rep footy grow week on week as the girls have played their club matches and realised just how much they love the sport."

Taylor said it was exciting

to announce the first ever Youth Girls Under 13 rep team.

“It’s always an exciting time when we get to announce a rep team, but when that rep team is the first one of its kind, the excitement is even higher!” he said.

“We’ve been blown away by the response to our new Youth Girls Under 13 rep team, so much so that we’ve brought our plans and timelines forward by about two months.

“This is a really great reflection of how much the girls are loving having their own girls only club competition to play in.

“With this region having already produced three AFLW

listed players, these girls are the latest to start out on that talent pathway.”

Three former North Coast locals have been drafted to AFLW clubs with Nikki Wallace and Brianna McFarlane both being recruited by the Brisbane Lions, and Georgia Breward spending time on the Gold Coast Suns list.

Following a selection trial, eighteen players were selected in the first North Coast Force Youth Girls Under 13 representative team.

Unprecedented weather conditions have saturated many fields, forcing councils and clubs to close grounds and postpone matches.

The initial season start was also pushed back from early April until after Easter

due to the wet weather conditions.

Draws for all competitions are current only until the end of June and will be reframed for July, August and September to take into account required changes.

North Coast Football’s community football competitions for all ages twelve years and up will

conclude three weeks later than planned in midSeptember, with the finals series to be played in October.

North Coast Football General Manager, Andrew Woodward, said they were working hard to get players back on the pitch.

“There’s a lot of disappointment and frustration, but we’re

determined to play as much football as possible,” he said.

“We did it in 2020 with the pandemic, and we’ll do it again in 2022.

“We know players, teams and match officials are itching to get on the pitch and get some momentum.

“Clubs and councils are working hard to get pitches ready, and North Coast

Football is doing what it can to move matches around and adjust competitions.

“We ask everyone to be patient as we navigate the unprecedented weather and its significant impacts.

“Our number one priority is to play as much football as possible and deliver maximum value to all participants.”

2022 Australian Swimming Championships

THE 2022 Australian Swimming Championships were held in Adelaide from 18 - 22 May. These Championships were held to select teams to go to World Championships in Budapest, Hungary and Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

These will both be held over the next few months.

Also at these Championships were the 18-20 years Boys finals and the 17-19 years Girls finals.

Swimming North Coast had four swimmers competing at these Championships.

Sophie Mayes and Niquola White from Trinity Lismore.

Declan Sutton from

Macksville Club and Olivia Sullivan from Kingscliff.

Sophie had a really good meet with 6th place in the 50 fly age group final.

She also had five other swims - 100 free 66th, 100 fly 40th, 50 Breast 62nd, 50 back 55th and 51st 100 back.

Olivia swam in five races - 41st 50 back, 41st 100 back, 43rd 200 back, 79th 50 free and 35th 200 medley.

Declan had six swims 59th 100 fly, 75th 50 free, 56th 50 fly, 50th 100 back, 97th 100 free and 40th 50 back.

Niquola - 61st 50 back and 92nd 50 free.

All these placings were overall across all of the swimmers.

Well done to these swimmers in such stiff competition.

LUCAS is involved in a serious car accident at three years of age.

He suffers a severe brain injury which significantly affects his cognitive development.

Lucas is placed under the care of the Department of Child Safety.

His mother is not involved in his daily care amid accusations of neglect and drug use.

His father passes-away a few years later.

Lucas spends several years living with his grandmother and his sister before moving into care. He remains close to his grandmother and sister, who visit him frequently.

As a result of the car accident, Lucas is awarded $10 million in compensation.

The NSW Trustee and Guardian is appointed as his financial manager.

Lucas does not have a will and in the circumstances, if he passed-away while his mother was alive, she would receive the whole of his substantial estate.

The Secretary of the Department of Communities and Justice makes an application to the Supreme Court, seeking orders approving the making of a will on Lucas’ behalf.

The Court accepts that the medical evidence put before the Court demonstrates that Lucas suffers from an intellectual disability that prevents him from making a will.

Nonetheless, the Court hears evidence that Lucas wants his grandmother and his sister “in his will” and that he was “unsure” about his mother.

The Secretary submits to the Court that it would be inappropriate for Lucas’ mother to be the sole beneficiary of his estate and proposes a will which only leaves ten percent to her.

It is also proposed that in the unlikely event that Lucas has a spouse at the time of his death, they receive 25 percent and his children 25 percent, if he has any.

The remaining terms of the proposed will leave the rest of Lucas’ estate to his grandmother and sister and includes a provision stating that if any of the shares do not take effect, the other shares increase proportionally.

Lucas’ mother does not appear at the hearing and the proposed orders are made.

THIS last week we saw so many Australians reject the politics of fear, inaction, and corruption and, at this election, they have set a mandate for leadership with integrity, vision and a commitment towards economic equality.

Voters demonstrated that they had simply had enough of mismanagement, corruption, disgraceful treatment of women and lack of direction in terms of international affairs.

In Cowper the majority held by the Nationals was 11.9 percent and so it was a huge mountain for any challenger to climb.

The Labor Party and the Greens worked hard to win the seat and were out in force every day but in the end were unsuccessful.

The Independent candidate Caz Heise also mounted an impressive campaign with an amazing team of active supporters.

A huge thanks must go to all the volunteers who turned up all last week to help with prepolling for all the parties and on voting day itself.

Some party supporters turned up every single day to press their cause and showed immense commitment and dedication.

Australia has finally decided on a new course for the Federal Government for the next three years.

We should celebrate this result - it gives us hope for the future .

REGARDLESS of the final result, it is clear that the people of Cowper have won.

Thanks to Caz Heise and her team of hard-working volunteers, Cowper is now marginal and well and truly on the election map.

It will no longer be taken for granted by any party, and the issues of climate change, integrity in politics and equality must now feature prominently, whoever takes the seat.

This was not about money.

We just saw Palmer spend $100m for nothing.

This was a movement of people who have had enough of politics as usual, who want real action, and who were willing to put skin in the game to get it.

Everyone in Cowper will benefit.

THE NSW Government has passed significant legislative amendments to enable RSL NSW sub-Branches across the State to improve their governance and accountability.

Following the passing of the Bill on Tuesday, amendments have been made to the RSL NSW Act 2018 which will see RSL NSW sub-Branches who are looking to reconstitute as companies limited by guarantee under the Corporations Act 2001, be exempted from duties that would

You never know what to expect with this fun-loving lifestyle series – other than a generous serving of childlike shenanigans and playful banter between the presenters. Amanda Keller, Chris Brown (above centre), Miguel Maestre (above left) and Barry Du Bois (above right) have the kind of chemistry that morning-TV execs wish they could bottle, but it’s a meeting of minds that can’t be manufactured. This week, the segments run the gamut from silly and witty to heartfelt and thoughtful. Dr Chris Brown is with man’s best friend – coming to the rescue of a dog that needs a helping paw – and Miguel visits Batemans Bay NSW Fire Brigade to say thanks for their hard work during fire season.

You could be forgiven for momentarily wondering whether you are watching Home and Away, or a commercial, rather than a well-acted ABC drama.

Infused with a sun-kissed atmosphere and tales of drugs and drinking, Barons is not a hardhitting drama; rather it’s a nostalgic, soft focus look back on the heyday of ’70s surfing in Australia, polished off with great costuming and an excellent soundtrack. The Vietnam War is merely a backstory as we witness the implosion of a friendship and the birth of rival surfwear brands. Tonight, a tragedy will change Buddy (Lincoln Younes, right) forever as he and Shirley (Catherine Vån-Davies) get caught up in Mac’s (Kick Gurry) Bali dealings.

This uplifting, visually gorgeous series takes pleasure in the simple act of walking and appreciating nature, and Kate Humble – a woman who has written a book on the subject – is the perfect presenter. CONDITIONS reduced the Jeff Gore sponsored 4 Ball Best Ball competition to a three round 6 hole event at the Macksville Country Club Golf.

Eagerness for a game of golf saw more than expected looking for a game and rule changes allowed for tee ups for all shots.

Winning team was junior Luke Laverty and Allan Clarke with Jeff Gore and Phil Bambury runners up.

Individual winner was Steve Ellis.

Darren Pike was the only nearest the pin winner.

Latest ladies competition winner was Jo Montague with Helen Ferrero runner up.

Straight shooter Rhonda McAuliffe scored nearest the pin with Desma Hughes having the fewest putts on the day.
