THIEVES, drug dealers, outlaw motorcycle gangs, domestic abusers and other offenders, take note: there’s a new top cop in town and he’s coming for you.

The Officer in Charge of Nambucca Valley police, Detective Chief Inspector Darren Jameson, who started the role on August 15, is a veteran of 32 years in the force, including seven years as Crime Manager for the Coffs Clarence Police District, where he oversaw a 40 per cent reduction in alcoholrelated crime and a 30 per cent reduction in overall crime.

Now he’s on a mission to reduce crime in the Nambucca Valley.

“I think people will find out pretty quickly I’m the straighttalking cop with a no-nonsense approach to crime,” he said, adding that he has “zero tolerance” for outlaw motorcycle gangs and domestic violence.

“I really struggle to understand why somebody would physically or mentally abuse a supposed loved one.

“It has no place in our community and it needs to be stamped out.

“The home is somewhere people should feel safe.”

Tackling issues related to drugs will be another key focus.

“Drugs, in particular cannabis, underlie a lot of issues we have

with crime, particularly with youth,” he said.

Jameson, a PhD candidate with a special interest in researching and implementing the most effective methods for crime reduction, said working with the community and gaining trust through doing good police work is the first step.

“My role will be about community engagement, including business, education and Indigenous communities to understand the issues facing the Valley,” he said.

“I’ll be looking at engaging youth to reduce youth delinquency and street offences.”

This work will be assisted, Jameson said, by the quality of the Nambucca Valley Police team.

“I was impressed when I came into the role with the level of engagement and care police here have for the community,” he said.

“I look forward to supporting the great police we have in the area.”

COVID Exposure Site in Nambucca Heads Local Health District Chief

Executive Stewart Dowrick advised the public this week of the new venue of concern associated with a confirmed case of COVID-19.

That venue is the BP Nambucca Heads Travel Centre, 2 Corkwood Road, Valla on Thursday August 19 between 2pm to 2.15pm.

Anyone who attended the following venue at the time listed is a casual contact (unless they have been contacted by NSW Health as close contacts) who must immediately get tested and isolate until a negative result is received..

In extra health advice the MNC LHD advises those close contacts to continue monitoring symptoms even if they receive a negative result and to immediately isolate and get retested if symptoms persist.

MANY people have heard of Equal Pay Day, but few realise that the date changes each year, because it is held on the day that marks how many days it takes from the end of the financial year for women’s pay to catch up to men’s.

This year’s Equal Pay Day falls on August 31, 61 days since the beginning of the financial year.

In 2021, the national gender pay gap is 14.2%, up from 13.4% in 2020.

On average, women working full-time earn $1,575.50 per week while men working full-time earn $1,837.00 and the full-time average weekly earnings difference between women and men is $261.50.

Australian Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW Australia) is marking Equal Pay Day 2021 by joining Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) to call on Australians to ask #WhatsYourPayGap in their workplaces and industries.

They see this as a crucial step towards bridging the divide and say that research indicates that when organisations analyse and take action on pay equity, the gender pay gap closes.

Major factors that contribute to the gender pay gap are discrimination and bias in hiring and pay decisions and that women and men work in different industries and different jobs, with femaledominated industries attracting lower wages.

“BPW Australia surveyed women earlier this year on their experiences and expectations of the future of work and we found women were telling us they lack the confidence on current policy settings valuing their work, for example the skills and pay for someone pushing the wheelbarrow vs someone pushing the wheelchair.”

However, some workplaces are moving forward.

The President of BPW Coffs Harbour, Sofia Ellington, said of her workplace, “At ANZ, the representation of women in leadership and achieving gender equality is a business imperative - it’s about accessing the talent, markets and economic opportunities that gender equality brings.

“Equal remuneration is a key component of improving women’s economic security and progressing equality and ANZ is proactive in this area, with appropriate strategies and policy in place to ensure no gender bias occurs,” she said.

Gary went on to explain that even to this day the impact of war on Vietnam Veterans is ever present.

“Many of our mates shiver at the sound of a helicopter overhead, a plate dropping, a bus backfiring, and many don’t sleep peacefully because the memories are still with them.”

It wasn’t until October 1987 that Vietnam Veterans were recognised, when Prime Minister Bob Hawke set aside August 18 for Vietnam Veterans to commemorate ‘The Battle of Long Tan’.

This has now become the designated day where the service men and women of the Vietnam War are remembered.

Gary remembers quite clearly the debrief he was given when he returned from his National Service time in Vietnam.

“I recall it was a bit like ‘Get on with it and harden up Digger.’

“If you were a ‘Nasho’, (National Service conscription) then they didn’t want you anymore.

“Throw the Greens away, don’t salute your boss and forget that there were people who we didn’t know trying to shoot us a short time ago.

“So back to your civilian job.”

The lack of support after their return and the impact it has had on the mental health of these Australian soldiers has been highly debated over time.

“We need to be proactive and say ‘Are you ok mate?’.

“This simple action may save one of our mates,” Gary said of the mental health issues many returned Vietnam veterans struggle with.

“We don’t wear our medals to be seen as heroes, we wear them so we do not forget that there is no glory in war and that sadly some of our mates did not come home as we did.

“We should be proud to have served in Vietnam.

“We left our families and loved ones, we put our lives at risk, we should hold our heads high and thank our mates who looked after us and didn’t come home.

“We will remember them.”

Pop-up Neighbourhood Pantry

A NEW ‘Neighbourhood Pantry’ has been inspiring community spirit in Stuarts Point during the statewide lockdown, with locals enthusiastically giving and taking contributions of everything from nonperishable pantry staples, toilet paper and sanitary pads to gourmet sweet treats, boxes of fresh fruit and a pot plant.

For now, the Pantry is a wooden box that 26-year-old local Briana Earle knocked up using what she had in her shed, propped up by a chair from her back deck.

She placed it on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Marine Parade on Wednesday, August 18, with a sign that says ‘Neighborhood Pantry: Give what you can, take what you need’ and filled it with what she had in her cupboards at the time: a couple of packets of crackers and noodles, tinned soup and corn, tubs of tomato paste and applesauce, and some fancy handmade soap she’d bought at a local market.

The community has taken it from there, with the highturnover of items appearing and disappearing from the pantry showing how locals have embraced it.

Within days, the only original item remaining was a packet of noodles.

Earle said the pantry was inspired by an idea she saw on Instagram about six months ago, and she was spurred to put it into action by concern for people doing it tough during the lockdown.

“Everyone needs to know

that we're all in this together, especially the younger generation, because they’re just copping it really hard at the minute,” she said, adding

that she hoped it would be helpful for anyone struggling to get access to groceries at the moment.

BREASTSCREEN NSW, as part of NSW Health, has made the decision to temporarily suspend all routine breast screening services in NSW. The decision to close was made in response to the increasing risk posed by the COVID-19 Delta strain and redeploying staff to support the pandemic response at each local health district.

Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) is encouraging women to continue with their breast cancer checks despite service centres being temporarily closed across NSW. A walk to remember down Wallace Lane

JUST when you thought Wallace Lane couldn’t look any better with the large array of murals adorning the large building walls on both sides of the road, the next stage of improvements have been completed, with a stage three on the horizon.

“The artwork embossed in the Wallace Lane road pavement resembles and represents a link between Wallace street shopping precinct and the Nambucca River foreshore,” Keith Williams, Manager, Technical Services of the Nambucca Valley Council told News Of The Area.

“The artwork together with the raised intersection platform on River Street form the initial visual improvements to the proposed Wallace Lane Shared Zone,” he added.

This project has been funded by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) and the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) as a ‘Streets as shared space program’.

There has been a state

wide roll out by the Public Spaces Division of the DPIE. This pilot program is to promote temporary activation projects in the local government areas to improve the safety and attractiveness of our streets that are key connectors and

“With the laneway closed to traffic for events, it will essentially provide the town with a temporary, additional 650 sqm of open space,” Mr Williams shared.

Taking this once off grant funding through the ‘Streets as shared spaces program’ supports the NSW Premier's priority to increase the walkable access to quality open, green, and public spaces in urban areas.

This is a fabulous opportunity for Macksville and has been greatly supported by the retailers, the Chamber of Commerce, property owners and Business Advisory Committee.

History of the Nambucca River Foreshore Walk

By Rachel MCGREGOR-ALLEN THE July announcement of $2.45 million for further improvements to the Nambucca River Foreshore Walk comes 36 years after locals had the idea to install a “proper path” in the location.

The concept of a Foreshore Walk began as a Lions Club of Nambucca Heads project, following the suggestion of then President Lion Terry Perkins in 1984.

Mr Terry Perkins told News Of The Area, “There was a terrible track along there. q

Cement being laid by the Lions Club.

“It was a gravel track.

“I remember seeing a young mother pushing her pram along the path, and I saw how she was struggling, and that started the idea for the walkway.

“A proper path was obviously needed.”

Originally proposed as a cycle and walkway project, the first stage of the project was set out by Shire Engineer Dan Walker and was accepted by the Club’s Board in October 1984 for a 100m section below Piggott St. Mr Perkins said, “The path first started off at the garden centre, just south of that.

“It continued on to Davidsons seafood, almost to the park.

“It was a big project that successive Lions Club Presidents added to over the years.

“The path continued east to alongside RSL and up the hill continued onto the V-wall.

“The project had a lot of community support, and included community members donating cement.

“Council supplied all the form work and the Lions Club did labour.”

Work began in February 1985 with 28 hours expended on formwork and levelling.

On the second day of the project, 5.4m3 of concrete was poured, covering 43 metres and guide points were installed.

“Lions members enjoyed the ‘hard yakka’ with lots of sweat, joking and laughing,” said Lion Peter O’Neill.

The walkway was officially opened in April 1988 under the guidance of President Lion Barry Duffus.

Over four years the cost was $12000.

Its length was 1331m, using 146.7m3 of concrete and 1450 hours of labour.

In 1988 the Lions Club received a Sydney Morning Herald Service Club Award for the Bi-centennial Walkway Project.

Lion Harold Fowler accepted the award in Sydney.

Project Chairman Lion Chris Garrett was reported as recommending that, “The area of grass and lantana between the walkway and the river would make a nice little park area where people could be able to stop and rest or maybe have a picnic lunch.”

Another project later resulted in Anzac Park.

Nambucca Shire Council expanded on the walkway by both widening and lengthening the path.

Berries Australia Welcomes Ag Visa

BERRIES Australia has welcomed the announcement this week of an Agriculture visa by the Australian government.

The Australian Agriculture visa will be available to workers across the agriculture, fisheries and forestry sectors and provide a basis for the ongoing growth of Australia’s primary industries as they strive to reach $100 billion in value by 2030.

Peter McPherson, Chair of Berries Australia, said the announcement was positive news for the berry sector which had been struggling to find harvest workers since the borders closed due to COVID. “The $1.4 billion berry sector has a heavy reliance on manual pickers due to the soft nature of the fruit and whilst historically we have employed backpackers, a stream of dedicated workers who want to work in the sector is very welcome,” Mr McPherson said.

“It is important to remember that these workers are creating jobs for Australians not taking them away as these pickers and packers mean we can employ more locals in longer term roles and they generate significant economic activity in regional communities.

“The Australian berry industry’s priorities are that the visa has high standards to

continue with their trial exams, even though they’re not able to do them at school.

HSC student Eden Kenny expressed concern that openbook exams opened up the possibility of students cheating.

“The lockdown has become a hard task, especially when we’re close to graduating.

“There’s really not much to do at the moment.

“There’s nothing we can do about this lockdown and I wish instead of going round and protesting, people just stay in their house and do what they’re supposed to be doing.

“Our last week of trials has been put online and that just seems useless to me.

“They’ve cut down the exam questions and the time and made it an open-book.

“I don’t see the point in this as it gives people a chance to cheat and we all know that’s

protections to ensure workers are protected, not subject to exploitation and that the visa is not misused.

“Pay and conditions, health, and work and safety will also be in line with similar requirements and protections under the Seasonal Worker Programme,” said Mr Littleproud.

The Australian Workers Union (AWU) however is not convinced and states the scheme is designed to replace the flow of easily exploited workers that will be lost to the system after a new free trade deal with Britain scrapped the 88-day work requirement from British working holiday visas.

AWU National Secretary Daniel Walton said, "Johnson rightly told Morrison he needed to scrap the 88-day requirement for Brits to work on Australian farms, because they were being routinely exploited and abused.

“But now David Littleproud is telling Southeast Asians to come on down for the same treatment,” he said.

"Much of the labour shortfall on farms could be made up quickly by providing Australian-standard wages and protections.

“Where there are still gaps, programs like the Pacific Labour Scheme and the Seasonal Worker Program are much better than simply opening the gates to vulnerable Southeast Asian workers without adequate rights and protections."

Valley Youth Talk Lockdown Restrictions

“I'M coping okay with the whole lockdown,” claims Nambucca Valley student Montana Wall.

“The most difficult part is definitely not being able to see my friends everyday, for me they help lift me up a lot so it can be a bit hard some days not being able to see them but can still always talk over the phone which helps.”

Last Thursday, the statewide lockdown was extended to Saturday August 28, with fingers in the Valley crossed that restrictions will end as scheduled.

This comes after a continued rise in COVID-19 cases across the state.

“Although it’s an extremely trying time, I ultimately hope to be able to see the best in it

inevitable.

“Due to the trials being delayed a week, it has cut back on time we could spend learning the last of each subject's syllabus.”

Valley HSC students are finding different ways to achieve their study goals through the restrictions.

There are those who plan an itinerary, and those who play it day by day.

“As someone who is relatively able to self-direct their learning, lockdown will probably not be detrimental to my HSC marks; however it can still be very difficult to stay focused and it can be quite unmotivating not having a distinct idea of what will happen for our HSC in the coming months,” said Madeline.

“Personally, I plan to cope with lockdown by sticking to a schedule of when I wake up,

when I study, when I exercise, and when I relax in order to provide some structure and incentive in my day.

“I also aim to use this time as an opportunity to regroup

and refocus on studying for the end of the year, while also taking time to make a conscious effort to hang out with my family, get outdoors and stay active.”

Flood grants

APPLICATIONS for grants of up to $15,000 each for community groups and not-for-profits in remote, rural and regional areas of New South Wales and South-East Queensland that were affected by the flooding in March will be open until September 15

through Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR).

It’s the first round of funding available as part of a $1 million disaster recovery partnership between FRRR and Suncorp designed to support rural Australian communities impacted by significant natural disasters.

LEARNING from home has become easier for parents and teachers of primary school students, with the introduction of guided weekly learning packs in NSW public schools and additional training for teachers.

The one-week guided learning packages are specifically designed for K–6 students and have been developed by a team

THE Morrison Government has enacted a blanket rule that will allow child care centres to waive gap fees in regional NSW, now that the statewide lockdown has been in effect for over 8 days.

It means services will have the option to waive gap fees for more Australian families impacted by COVID-19, when they keep their children home during lockdowns.

The gap fee is the difference between the Child Care Subsidy (CCS) that the Government pays to

a service and the remaining fee paid by the family.

Minister for Education and Youth Alan Tudge said this aligns with recent changes that allow families to use additional allowable absence days, where child care services are in a location that has been declared a Commonwealth hotspot of more than seven days.

“Together these changes provide certainty for families.

“This will take some additional financial pressure off families who are struggling during COVID-19 lockdowns,” Minister Tudge said.

“It is also good for services

NSW students perform well in NAPLAN despite pandemic STUDENTS in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in NSW have achieved some of the top NAPLAN results in the country, despite disruptions caused by COVID-19 over the past 18 months.

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell congratulated students for their results, after

the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), responsible for NAPLAN, released preliminary national data for 2021.

“Once again, NSW students are achieving above the national average in all five domains, at all year levels,” Ms Mitchell said.

Key takeaways from 2021 NAPLAN results for NSW are:

• NSW mean scores were above the national average in each test domain in all years.

• NSW ranks in the top three jurisdictions by mean scores in all domains for all year levels, except in Year 9 Reading.

• NSW has the highest mean score in Spelling and Writing for Years 3 to 7.

• NSW has the second

highest mean scores in Numeracy for Years 3 to 9, Grammar & punctuation for Years 3 to 7 and Spelling in Year 9.

“Since the pandemic began last year, students have shown incredible resilience in continuing to focus on their education and adapting to new ways of learning,” Ms Mitchell said “Students are faced with

The Swans entry into the AFLW coincides with the club’s involvement in the recent recruiting of AFL North Coast talent.

Local players such as Phoebe Baptiste, April Devine, Poppy Johnston, and Shania King have previously been identified for the Sydney Swans Academy Top End Program.

The AFL North Coast adding a Under 14 girls competition for 2022 comes on the back of the phenomenal success of the Youth Girls Under 17 competition in 2017, and the women’s competition which is now in its fourth season after its introduction in 2018.

Northern NSW Development Lead Matt Crawley said that female participation in the AFL North Coast continued to grow following the introduction of female competitions.

“After just five seasons of Youth Girls footy we now find that 28% of participants in our junior competition are girls, and despite the women’s competition starting a year later, 25% of participants in our senior competition are women,” he said.

“Our fastest growing demographic are girls aged 12 to 14 years so it’s time they got their own age group and chance to play in a girls only competition.

“Other regions that have already implemented the younger girls only divisions have seen an explosion in the numbers of girls who are keen to play and we know it will be

the same on the North Coast.

“A number of clubs have ready-made teams so the ground work is already done.”

Further supporting the local expansion will be the introduction of a Sydney Swans team into the AFLW competition in the 2022/2023 season.

The Swans will join the competition along with the three other AFL clubs that don’t currently have a women’s team, meaning more elite content on free to air TV across the summer months which will generate significant interest locally.

More importantly, with the North Coast being part of the Swans’ Academy zone there will be enhanced opportunities for girls to progress through the talent pathway, with the potential to go all the way to the AFLW. Crawley said the Swans had recognised the talent the AFL North Coast was producing.

“Our region has punched above its weight when it comes to producing female talent,” he said.

“Nikki Wallace, Brianna McFarlane, and Georgia Breward all started out in footy on the North Coast and each was drafted to an AFLW club.

“In the last 12 months we’ve had local girls April Devine, Shania King, Poppy Johnston, and Phoebe Baptiste in the Swans Academy Top End Program, so the Sydney Swans know that our region is a hotbed of talent.”

THE growth of female football in the region is set to receive a big boost in regards to two recent announcements for 2022, which will help with their pathways to elite football and the overall development of female football.

AFL North Coast female players have been presented with two fantastic opportunities, with the Sydney Swans being granted an AFLW licence and AFL North Coast starting a Youth Girls under 14 competition in 2022.

the challenges of learning from home again this year and we are prepared to help students recover any ground lost during this period.”

Last year, the NSW Department of Education introduced online reading and numeracy check-in assessments to help teachers understand what support students needed to get back on track after time spent

learning from home.

“The feedback from schools has been extremely positive and the check-ins have continued this year,” Ms Mitchell said.

Work is underway on several recommendations from the NSW Government led review into NAPLAN. This includes investigating the feasibility of conducting the test earlier in the year and providing the results to schools within two weeks.

Native Sportfish season to re-open

THE Australian Bass and Estuary Perch season is set to reopen on Wednesday 1 September 2021.

The annual four-month fishing closure from May August has been in place in all NSW rivers and estuaries to protect the species during spawning.

Mr Adam Marshall, NSW Minister for Agriculture said, “The sport fish season has reopened after a four-month closure to protect the species when they form schools and migrate over late autumn and early winter to trigger spawning.

“Now their spawning period has finished, most fish will return to their spring and summer feeding grounds higher up in the catchment.”

Mr Marshall reminds fishos that there are strict bag limits in place.

“A total bag limit of two Australian Bass or Estuary Perch per person or a combination of both species with a possession limit of four is in place.

“When fishing in a river, only one fish is permitted to be over 35cm in length.

“Our fisheries officers will be out in force to monitor compliance as we continue to protect the health of our sport fishery.

“These rules are designed to protect, conserve and improve our fisheries resources for future generations.”

The Marine Area Command - NSW Police Force listed permitted boating activities for LGAs outside of LGAs of Concern/Declared areas on August 17 2021.

• Recreational boating and fishing are allowed.

Boating includes power, sail and paddle craft.

It can include any type of activity that may be considered recreation, swimming, sunbaking etc.

• You must remain in your LGA or, if you need to go outside of your LGA, up to 5km from your residence.

• Boating/fishing activity is limited to the same household members or if from different households a maximum of two people.

They must be able to socially distance from each other.

• A boat ramp location is not a consideration, you must be within your LGA or 5km from your residence.

• Coastal Waters are included in the adjacent LGA or to anyone living within 5km.

Police will treat coastal waters out to 3 nautical miles.

• A person cannot travel along a water system outside of their LGA or further than 5km from their residence to reach coastal waters • Where a body of water (harbour) is bounded by several LGA’s a person may be on that main body of water but cannot travel through or past other LGAs to reach other rivers, estuary’s or open sea.

• You must always be within your LGA area, 5km from your residence or if applicable coastal waters connected to your LGA.

Provision for multiple wives

JAKE belongs to a religious group that practices polygamy.

He meets and falls in love with Amy, another member of the group and they are eventually married.

A few years into their marriage, Jake has taken two more wives.

A religious wedding ceremony is held for each subsequent marriage.

Although the law does not recognize polygamy and only Jake and Amy are legally married, in the eyes of their congregation, all three women are his wives.

They all share a home together and are, for the most part, financially dependent on Jake and collectively raise their children together.

Decades later, Jake is tragically killed in an accident.

He did not have a will.

He had often stated that he didn’t believe in wills and that everything would ‘sort itself out’.

Over his life, Jake had accumulated a substantial property portfolio which was now worth over 3 million dollars.

Amy is advised by her solicitor that she, and the other wives will need to apply to the Supreme Court for a Grant of Letters of Administration.

In an Affidavit, Amy explains to the Court that, while she was Jake’s legal spouse, the other wives had been living in a de facto relationship with Jake for decades.

She goes into detail about the wedding ceremonies.

Although the ceremonies were not legally binding, they are given weight by the Court.

The Court also considers that all three wives were financially dependent on Jake, they all had children to him and they were all considered to be his spouses within their community.

The Court makes a Grant of Letters or Administration that entitles Amy and the other wives to an equal portion of Jake’s estate, which they are able to administer with the help of their solicitor.

What about the workers?

DEAR News Of The Area,

WE had news last week that a tender has been accepted for the Nambucca Library Upgrade and so preparations are now underway for the start of the building work.

The Loading Zone which is planned for vehicular access to the courtyard will operate with a time limit of 30 minutes. This leads us to ask what will happen when workmen need to access the site for lengthy maintenance work on the library or the two halls after the building is completed or when deliveries need to be made to the library?

The courtyard is to be landscaped and public seating is to be installed, so there will be no possibility of parking in the courtyard as these worker’s vehicles do at present.

Clearly such vehicles will have to park at a distance.

The only close-by parking places have a one hour limit on them.

Also we need to bear in mind that such workers often have tools and materials on their ute and need to go back and forth from their work vehicle.

Sometimes they need to use battery power directly from their vehicles for their power tools.

The halls and the library are old buildings so repairs and renovations are often necessary.

In addition we unfortunately have vandalism to contend with from time to time and glass in the front doors or windows may need replacing.

How could a glazier manage with this limited access?

Often workmen need to be on site for several days at a time for roofing or plumbing repairs.

How can this be managed in a loading zone with a half hour limit on it?

The design planned doesn’t take into consideration these practical issues.

Many members of the community are concerned about the practicality of the design and following on from this about issues of public safety.

Further thought needs to be given to these proposals - as present design plans will present considerable problems into the future and can with compromise and consultation be avoided.

The kindness of strangers (and friends) DEAR News Of The Area, MY brother-in-law was taken ill on the beach on Saturday when he was out walking.

Quite by chance one of the women on the beach nearby came to his assistance and told him she was a Trauma Nurse at Macksville Hospital.

She called an ambulance as he was too unwell and had collapsed.

She gave them very explicit instructions - even with GPS Coordinates so that an ambulance could hopefully come along the beach and pick him up.

This did not happen, there seemed to be a lot of confusion about how to get onto the beach - even though they were told that it was possible to drive on at Nambucca Surf Club and that directions there were also available on GPS. Many phone calls went on and then a woman from the Urunga SES walked down from the Valla beach entrance and also got onto the phone because the message relayed from Sydney was inaccurate and said there was someone ill at Valla Beach where the flags were.

There are no flags at Valla beach.

In the meantime a doctor out walking came

over and helped my brother-in-law, also getting on the phone for help.

In the end he contacted the President of the Nambucca Surf Club (also our neighbour) who managed to contact a couple of lifeguards at the Club who were doing some training and they hopped into their rescue vehicle and came straight round.

This all took about an hour - but at least they came and ferried him down to the ambulance which had finally arrived at the Surf Club.

Scary to think it could have been a life and death situation - luckily it all ended well and after being under observation at Macksville Hospital my brother in law was allowed to come home.

The bottom line is - 000 calls go through to Sydney and then have to be relayed to the area where they are required.

If the ambulance station responding to the call doesn't know the area too well - then there are long delays.

Urunga is only 22kms from Nambucca but there was a lot of confusion because of a lack of local knowledge .

There appears to be a need for local control and local knowledge.

THE most attractive person in our workplace is not at all tech-savvy and so she hasn't realised that she can apply a 'touch up' filter when we have online team meetings.

For the first time ever, she is looking terrible in comparison to the rest of us.

Last week our manager asked if she was feeling unwell, and in the same conference call, he complimented me on my youthful glow.

This really depends on how you have been treated in the past by Miranda.

Can I call her Miranda?

I'm imagining her as the loose-limbed and lithe muse in Picnic at Hanging Rock.

The males (and probably the females) in your workplace no doubt used to imagine Romanian panpipes as she sashayed into the office, her hair hanging provocatively and wispily around her shoulders.

They were no doubt entranced while she took the minutes with a Tim Tam crumb resting on her lips, just begging to be smoothed away by Roger from accounts.

And now, on Zoom, she looks more like frumpy Edith, particularly with her computer angled in such a way as to give the impression she has a double chin, and the fluorescent lighting from her bathroom (she's locked herself in there to get away from her husband, who is also working from home) showing up every imperfection from the rash caused by her mask to her hair roots, now letting everyone in the office know that her glossy blonde locks were from a packet.

Meanwhile, you, with your advanced computer skills have a French Polynesian virtual background that brings out your blue eyes, your flawless complexion, and your glowing tan thanks to some handy filter work.

If she is one of those annoying types that used to say things like, 'Claudia, you're looking tired today; would you like me to order you some Rise & Shine supplements? They support your metabolism and build your immunity' then I'd let Miranda suffer until the end of lockdown (which at the rate we are going could be 2023).

However, if Miranda is actually quite lovely in personality and looks, then maybe give her the heads up in about two months - let's not rush things.

By Aiden BURGESS THIS year’s AFL North Coast season has been an historic one, with both the Lismore Swans and Casino Lions joining the competition for the first time.

In a year in which the AFL North Coast celebrated its 40th season, eight seniors teams from Port Macquarie to Lismore took part while a record six women’s teams played in 2021.

The Nambucca Valley Lions made the step up to first grade action this year.

The Grafton Tigers women played their first season as a stand-alone club after previously combining with the Northern Beaches Blues women in 2019.

The Nambucca Valley Lions also made the step up into the seniors competition after winning last year’s reserves premiership.

With the finals series underway, what better time to look back at the 2021 home and away season, starting

with our local pride of Lions.

Nambucca Valley Lions: After winning last year’s reserve grade premiership, it was a tough transition stepping up to first grade this season with the Lions winning just two games in 2021.

The Lions showed tremendous heart throughout the season, managing with reduced squad numbers throughout.

As the Lions’ Jacon Newbury said after a round

three loss to the Northern Beaches Blues in May, “Entering first grade for the first time in 10 years was always going to be a tough nut for the Lions to crack but the determination they showed today proves the boys are committed and learning.

“The lads are excited for what the future holds.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day and the same can be said for a successful football club.

Coffs Harbour Breakers: The all-around powerhouse club of 2021, the Breakers seniors, women’s and reserves teams all finished their seasons as minor premiers.

The three Breakers teams had just 4 losses between them all season.

The Breakers seniors’ team will look to add a third premiership to their 2017 and 2019 flags, while the women's

side look for back-to-back flags after their 2020 premiership.

Sawtell/Toormina Saints: Last year’s runners up started the season slowly but were the standout team of the second half of the season, winning seven straight games heading into this year’s finals series as the seniors team finished second.

The Saints will be out to add to their record 10 AFL North Coast seniors premierships.

Lismore Swans: Made an instant impact in their inaugural season on the North Coast with both their seniors and women’s team finishing third on the ladder, as the club now looks to make history by winning a premiership in their debut season in the AFL North Coast competition.

Port Macquarie Magpies: Took until the last game of the season to secure a finals berth, finishing fourth with a final round win against the Northern Beaches Blues.

Was one of three clubs whose seniors and women’s sides both made finals.

Northern Beaches Blues: Looked like a finals side for much of the season, but a losing run late saw them just miss out on this year's finals series.

The Blues women were the only side to beat the Coffs Harbour Breakers this season on their way to finishing second.

Grafton Tigers: Like their AFL namesakes Richmond, the defending premiers failed to make this year’s semi-finals. The Tigers under 17s finished as minor premiers, while it was the women’s first season as a standalone team.

Casino Lions: The Lions first season in the AFL North Coast seniors competition was a tough return to senior footy for the first time since 2017, with the Casino club going winless in 2021.
