National Ice Action Strategy to be extended FROM Page 1 impact of ice, other drugs and alcohol in our communities.

This investment includes an additional $27.9 million being committed to support other critical drug and alcohol treatment projects in areas of identified need.

Close to $830 million is set to be invested in alcohol and other drug treatment services and programs over the next four years.

Member for Cowper, Pat Conaghan, said he had seen first-hand “the devastating impact of drug use on not just families but entire communities”.

Mr Conaghan said the investment would allow organisations in the Mid North Coast to continue “delivering innovative, community-based solutions to curb use of drugs such as methamphetamines”.

“This is particularly important for high-risk population groups,

including people in rural and regional areas and Indigenous communities,” Mr Conaghan said.

According to national wastewater drug monitoring, methamphetamine use has reduced for the second consecutive year, while MDMA, cocaine and heroin consumption have all fallen.

Minister for Health and Aged Care Greg Hunt said while this was a good sign, there is still work to be done.

THE Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) is encouraging eligible groups to apply to its Volunteer Emergency Services Fund (VESF) program, to support local volunteer emergency services groups and first responder organisations in communities affected by the 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires.

Thanks to the generous contribution of a private donor, grants of up to $25,000 are available to strengthen local emergency response capabilities, based on identified community needs and priorities, including to support volunteers’ wellbeing and mental health.

The VESF grants are available to local volunteer emergency services groups and first responder organisations across the Nambucca Valley.

Danielle Griffin, FRRR’s Philanthropic Services Manager Corporate, said that funding from this grant program had already provided much-needed support, funding 54 projects across 66 fire-affected communities.

“We’ve seen local groups upgrade their equipment and infrastructure, improve their service to communities and enhance support for their volunteers.

“This funding is a timely reminder that these communities

need continued support and investment.

“The funding will contribute to remote, rural and regional communities’ confidence in the capacity and capability of their local volunteer first responder and emergency services groups to implement solutions for adapting to changing conditions and planning for future disasters.

“The volunteers themselves are critical to these outcomes and we encourage projects that build not only the skills of this unpaid workforce but wellbeing support to sustain their efforts.

“Many of these communities have endured multiple disasters

“For too many Australians, illegal drugs are still an insidious scourge on our community, robbing families of their loved ones,” Minister Hunt said.

Estimates from 2019 suggest that roughly 300,000 Australians used methamphetamines in the past twelve months, with over half of these using crystal methamphetamine, or ice.

The four most common drugs that people seek treatment for are alcohol (34 percent), amphetamines (28 percent), cannabis (18 percent), and heroin (5.1 percent).

Diana Oakes, a member for the last four-to-five years said, “Originally I joined for my Mum who had been a State Vice President, but once I retired it was more about meeting new women in the community.”

CWA Yarrahapinni meetings are held every second Thursday of the month at 9:30 am for a cup of tea and a chat. Meetings rotate around Stuarts Point, Scotts Head and Eungai.

HEALTHY North Coast is putting the call out to Nambucca Valley residents with lived experience of mental ill-health and carers giving mental health support to share their insights.

Healthy North Coast Chief Executive Officer Julie Sturgess says that access to meaningful and relevant mental health tools and resources is vital to help people act early and seek support.

“We know that health information can be difficult to

By Tara CAMPBELL PURCHASERS of used motor vehicles in NSW are being warned by Fair Trading of scams involving odometer tampering.

This follows after a four-fold increase in the number of fines issued for the offence in NSW in the past year, with hundreds of thousands of kilometres being knocked off vehicle odometers and sold to unsuspecting buyers.

NSW Fair Trading Investigators dished out $112,200 in fines and 76 penalty notices in 2021 and 2022.

Minister for Fair Trading Eleni Petinos said as used motor vehicle sales have risen amid the COVID-19 pandemic, so too have incidents of odometer fraud where perpetrators wind back the mileage or replace the odometer with one showing fewer kilometres.

“This is a huge jump from 22 total penalties in 2020 - so anyone considering conning a potential buyer by odometer tampering should know that when you are caught, it’s going to cost you,” Ms Petinos said.

"In one case a seller shaved off more than 400,000km off a 2012 Subaru XV, reducing the odometer from 470,000km down to 52,709km.

“The vehicle was then sold for $32,000, an $11,000 increase on the original sale price.

PUBLIC PESTICIDE NOTIFICATION 2022 Council will be conducting weed control activities on roads, reserves, laneways, pathways, drains, public and Crown reserves under Council’s management on a quarterly basis commencing January 2022 (inclusive) in the following areas: Nambucca Heads, Scotts Head, Valla Beach, Eungai Rail, Eungai Creek, Allgomera, Warrell Creek, Macksville, Gumma, Congarinni, Talarm, Utungun, Taylors Arm, Bowraville, South Arm, North Arm, Upper and Lower Buckrabendinni, Missabotti, Kennaicle Creek, Valla Rural and North Macksville.

An extensive weed control program will be performed on the Council owned or managed road reserve system, targeting weedy grass species including Giant Rats Tail and Coolatai Grass and woody weeds including Lantana and Privet. Herbicide application may be performed at any time, throughout the day or night, when weather conditions are suitable.

Bindiis and other broadleaf weeds will also be targeted within reserves and sporting fields, throughout all townships of the Nambucca Valley Council.

The herbicides used will be those registered for use on the particular plants being controlled.

The program may be altered without notice dependent upon weather and plant conditions.

Signs stating “Weed Spraying in Progress” will be displayed when actual spraying is being undertaken.

“If it seems too good to be true, it just might be, so it’s worth taking extra measures to make sure you don’t end up with an expensive mistake,” Ms Petinos said.

Mr and Mrs James were returning south after visiting flood affected areas of the state such as Lismore to see first hand what RSL NSW might be able to do to assist veterans and their families affected by the floods.

While he was in Bowraville, News Of The Area spoke to Ray James who said, “Jim Cameron has been asking me to visit the Frank Partridge VC Museum for some time and I appreciate the opportunity to do so.”

The role of Churches in local history on display at Mary Boulton Cottage

IN the 1800’s places of worship were central to the social fabric of communities all over the world.

The role of churches in the establishment and development of towns and cities in the early days of Australia was significant, and a new exhibit at the Mary Boulton Pioneer Cottage and Museum will help visitors understand how the churches shaped life here in the Nambucca Valley.

News Of The Area spoke to the Treasurer of the Mary Boulton Pioneer Cottage and Museum Committee, Pat Kerr, who said, “This new exhibit is sure to bring back memories for some visitors and inform others on the role our churches played in us becoming the wonderful Nambucca Valley Community we are today.”

Pat added, “What many locals don’t realise is that our museum holds comprehensive archives and reference material and visitors often find out information on their own family while they are here.”

As well as the new Churches Exhibit visitors

will find the facility boasts the replica pioneer cottage, a lockup, a cream shed and a timber cutters bark hut.

There is also much to see in the sprawling annex and shed such as farming machinery, timber industry machinery and a pioneer wall commemorating early settlers to the area.

Pat Kerr said, “We are now getting back into the swing of things here following a slow time due to the effects of the pandemic.”

Pat went on to say, “We are hoping younger people in our community will take an interest in their history and come to see us and even volunteer here to keep our Nambucca Valley history alive for future generations.”

Following Dr Fergusson’s endorsement of Ms Heise, the crowd heard from the Independent running for Cowper herself.

Ms Heise spoke of her strong belief in the grassroots movement, and her passion for running a respectful campaign, with her aim to bring back the trust of the Australian people.

She shared that she had been researching Nambucca and learning about the diversity of the community in the Shire, including that the average age was almost nine years older than the state average.

the concerns that she had heard from the community so far that reflected worries relating to increasing living expenses, high petrol prices, and the cost of housing that is pushing some local people out of the area.

She presented her stance for solutions such as providing secure housing, jobs growth and regional security.

“We have to act now to protect our families and our beautiful environment.”

According to Ms Heise some community members can no longer afford to go to the GP because they cannot afford to pay the gap payment.

Saving Medicare is one of Ms Heise’s priorities.

Ms Heise spoke of “bringing the resources to the region that we need”, including ensuring that the region is provided with proper telephone and internet connectivity.

Action on climate change

was a key aspect discussed in the campaign launch, with Ms Heise stating there needed to be a better response to national emergencies like the recent devastating floods on the North Coast of NSW. She said, “We need a government that acknowledges climate change is actually happening.”

She assured the attendees that if she is elected she will work with local communities to do risk assessments of local areas, and that she will “rattle cages on the communities' behalf, so that you truly have a voice”.

Greens Announce Candidate For Cowper

THE Greens have announced environmental scientist and planning specialist Tim Nott as their candidate for the Federal seat of Cowper.

Launching his candidacy just weeks after devastating flooding across the Northern Rivers and parts of the Mid North Coast, part of Mr Nott’s campaign revolves around better preparing residential areas for the impact of floods.

Mr Nott said the region must heed predictions by experts and accept that flooding in Cowper will increase in both frequency and severity, inundating areas not previously impacted.

“Poor planning has not only put lives at risk, it affects work, family, childcare, education, mental health and increases the cost of living,” he said.

Mr Nott said the Greens have a plan to increase the clean power created in Australia to be seven times larger than currently, which will keep people safe, encourage jobs growth and lower the cost of living.

“This will utilise the natural competitive advantage we have to either export power to Asia or use

it to create products locally,” he said.

David Shoebridge, lead Greens senate candidate for NSW, said Tim Nott’s detailed knowledge of both the planning system and environmental management make him an exceptional candidate for Cowper.

“From working with local farmers to use their land more effectively to running a local Landcare group it’s clear that Tim is deeply committed to the Cowper community and passionate about preserving and improving our environment.

Newcastle Permanent invites grant applications q Miimi Aboriginal Corporation in Bowraville produces ingredients for a soup kitchen to supply to disadvantaged community members.

By Andrea FERRARI NOT-FOR-PROFIT and charity organisations working to overcome disadvantage or create opportunities for marginalised or isolated people, in a region that includes the Nambucca Valley, can apply for funds through the latest Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation funding round.

There’s just under three weeks to apply, with applications closing on April 14 2022.

The Charitable Foundation has $800,000 on offer to support new or existing projects in a region that spans the Central Coast, North Coast and Central West regions of NSW. Newly appointed Charitable Foundation Executive Officer Carly Bush said with the impacts of the flood emergency and Covid-19 hitting support organisations and charities hard, communities need funding more than ever.

Carly said since taking up the role she has seen the amazing impacts local groups can have in their community if given some

financial support.

For example, recent projects in the Nambucca Valley funded through the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation have benefitted Miimi Aboriginal Corporation’s Grow N Munch project.

The Grow N Munch project was funded to set up sustainable raised garden beds and to upgrade Miimi’s existing kitchen.

This meant the organisation could grow and supply fresh produce and ingredients for the soup kitchen to supply to disadvantaged community members.

“This latest grant round of $800,000 means the

Charitable Foundation will have provided $25 million in funding to support more than 520 initiatives,” Carly said.

“We’re keen to support initiatives that rewrite the future of people in need, now and for generations to come.

“Especially those with a focus on health, young people and social wellbeing.”

She said many charities

don’t have resources to make funding applications, so the Charitable Foundation makes applying online straight forward.

Campaign to stop vaping

THE NSW Government is urging young people to quit vaping and know the facts and dangers of e-cigarettes.

In recent years, the use of e-cigarettes, or ‘vapes’ has become a large trend in younger Australians, particularly secondary students, due to the easeof-access to products and a wealth of flavours which attract younger users.

The Government have launched the Get The Facts – Vaping Toolkit and NSW Health awareness campaign to assist users to quit vaping, whilst learning the dangers of the product, which can contain harmful substances found in cleaning products, nail polish remover, weed killer and bug spray.

reminds parents, carers, young people and teachers that vaping is not safe and can have harmful, long-term effects to the physical and brain development of young people.

Minister Hazzard said that research has proven that e-cigarettes are just as addictive and harmful as regular cigarettes.

“A respiratory researcher once told me that e-vaping liquids have chemicals that are similar to antifreeze, with 500 different flavours to attract kids,” Mr Hazzard said.

“It makes it pretty obvious as to the harm it can cause to youngsters’ lungs.”

Many vapes contain nicotine, some at extremely high concentrations, even if they are not labelled as such, and evidence suggests they can lead to a lifelong nicotine addiction.

NSW Health has worked with the NSW Department of Education to develop the Vaping Toolkit, which

contains evidence-based resources and educational materials for parents, carers, young people and schools, to combat the rising number of children and young people who are trying or taking up vaping.

Minister Mitchell urged parents to discuss the dangers of e-cigarettes with their children and to report any usage in schools to principals.

“The number of young people vaping without consideration to the effects is concerning.

“I encourage all parents and young people to find out more and talk about the hidden, dangerous impacts of e-cigarettes,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Educating our young people about the dangers of vaping is essential when there continues to be a large number of reckless individuals selling nicotine products to minors.”

The campaign will

target secondary students to raise awareness of the hidden chemicals in vapes, and provide a resource for teachers, parents and carers to kick start conversations.

It is illegal to sell e-cigarettes or vapes to anyone under the age of eighteen.

There are severe penalties for businesses or others who provide them to minors, including fines of up to $11,000 for individuals, and up to $55,000 for corporations, for first offences.

Between 1 July 2020 and 31 December 2021,

The 37 shark listening stations across the NSW coast will be kept and aerial surveillance utilising drones will be continued.

Jenny’s Journey’ exhibiting at Stringer Gallery JENNY Thorby has been an active member of the Nambucca Valley Art Council (NVAC) for four years, since she first came to live in Nambucca Heads, and frequently exhibits at the Stringer Gallery.

Jenny’s work will return to the Gallery from Tuesday April 5, in an exhibition called ‘Jenny’s Journey’, running until Saturday April 30.

After studying art at school, which she loved, Jenny then went on to study textile design. As a result, many of her works include q

floral motifs.

Two years ago, she began printmaking and it is this medium that she is currently working on.

With considerable passion and an obvious joy from her art making, Jenny says, “I love the mystery of printmaking.

“You never know what it will turn out like till you pull that final print.”

Jenny explores all sorts of printmaking from dry point (involving scratching onto plastic or metal) to lino printing, collagraphs and etching.

Wood engraving is a favourite, as is scraperboard (also called scratchboard).

not a print-making method, but involves scratching onto a specially prepared black surface with a sharp tool to reveal the white underneath.

This can then be hand painted or left as a black and white image.

Inspiration is drawn from her wonderful travels in the outback where old houses, flowers, birds and a never-ending love of nature beckon her to take many photographs. She then uses these to create her unique prints and scraperboard images.

Jenny has been greatly influenced by other printmakers.

She states, “I aspire to the works of Lionel Lindsay (wood engravings), Durer (dry point), Kit Hiller (lino prints) and many other artists.”

Valleys go down in semi-final thriller

VALLEYS Cricket have missed out on a grand final berth by the barest of margins after a thrilling semi-final against Sawtell Cricket Club.

Sawtell qualified for this season's North Coast Cricket Council’s Premier League grand final with a dramatic one-run victory in their semi-final at Richardson Park.

It was truly a great comeback for the Sawtell side as they looked in all

sorts of trouble early in their two-day match against Valleys Cricket.

Sawtell opened the batting and were soon reeling at 3/15, with two early wickets to Valleys bowler Trent Statham.

The wickets continued to tumble as Sawtell looked in deep trouble at 6/33.

A vital knock from Charlie Howard of 43 not out saw Sawtell finish all out for 106.

Trent Statham produced a scintillating spell taking 2/9 from his fourteen overs,

while Ben Pierce (2/24 from 16.5 overs), and Taylor Gilbert (2/19 from 10 overs) also produced top spells.

With a grand final spot up for grabs, Sawtell’s bowlers need to produce a performance for the ages.

And they duly obliged, bowling out Valleys Cricket for 105 to get home by the skin of their teeth.

Sawtell captain Richie Gallichan led the way taking five wickets, with Charlie Howard taking three and Jake McMillan two.

Despite having to defend

a low total, Sawtell captain Richie Gallichan always believed in his playing group.

“It’s funny, as I was always confident and even though we only scored 106 I felt we had done enough to defend it,” he said.

“We have a really good young group, and we can find a way to win from anywhere, and I think that comes from the things we do off the field socially and the chemistry that creates.”

The Sawtell captain recalled the final frantic

moments of the match.

“They needed eight runs to win with three wickets remaining, and Dave Angus took a blinder to get Brodie Bartlett out,” he said.

“They were 9/104 at the tea break needing two to tie and three to win, and their young no.11 played out a maiden against me.

“Ty Murphy had a chance to get a run out, then Charlie Howard produced a ripper ball to get him out LBW. “It was pretty tense and the closest game I’ve ever been involved with.”

Sawtell now plays the Northern Districts Rebels in the Premier League grand final in Woolgoolga this weekend.

Minor premiers Rebels host defending premiers Sawtell as they play off for premiership glory in their two-day match at the High Street Playing Fields.

Gallichan said that playing the recent semi-final might give his side a slight advantage.

“I think the advantage will be they haven’t played in about seven weeks, so after that win we’ve got a bit of momentum heading into the grand final,” he said.

Urunga Raiders Win the Challenge Cup

“We played really well as a squad getting better after every game we played, lots of combinations coming

together and a great team effort.

“Showing that we play as a squad and not just relying on any individuals was seen in the fact that we had nine different goal scorers over

the weekend.

“We had some close games against an Indigenous side, the Banigas, who showed they had some talent over the weekend, had good games against

both Coffs United women and Coffs United under 16s, who actually played us in the grand final, so big congratulations to them on making it that far as a young squad.

WHAT a week.

Rain, sunshine, overcast and then looking like it could rain at any minute.

The game however still goes on (usually).

Last Tuesday the Ladies started their consistency singles semi-finals but were washed out part way through and will hopefully have resumed on the 22.

running and finally beat Rowdy 25-17.

In a game that would have done any final proud, Rhys ‘The Riddler’ Riddell went down to Ty Webber 2225 whilst Paul Ward defeated Paul Holden 25-14.

The battle resumed on Sunday with Doug Cedelland defeating Fred Pope 25-24, Pushbike Michel (after a visit to hospital the previous day because yours truly hit him on the head with part of the

shade coverings) overcame Ty Webber 25-22.

Aaron ‘Boof’ Cedelland defeated Gary Tierney 25-9.

Gary had a good win on Saturday but couldn't repeat that performance.

Darcy Rostron 25 defeated Cosi 10, Neil Duffus put up a fine performance against wily Joe Frank 25- 19, Graham ‘The Good Brother’ Hunt defeated his neighbour Bruce ‘Macadamia’ Mason 25 -22 and Terry ‘The Eel’

Harvey 25 defeated Mark ‘Canadian Club’ Blackford 23.

In what was billed as the match of the day, Paul Ward defeated Tony ‘Urky’ Urquhart 25-14.

After the recent downpours and pitch closures, Urunga FC coach Trevor Martin was happy to be on the field again as the club prepared for the new Coastal League One competition.

“I think the Challenge Cup was a great success for the hosts, with the recent weather it must have been a difficult call to press ahead despite the threat of more rain on the already wet fields and although pitch two in particular was tough to play on everyone was just thankful to be playing again.

“Urunga went through the tournament without a loss, we did start a little slow, had a scare in our second game against a Nambucca composite team who took an early lead.

“In short games, that can make things tricky but we got two back late in the game to get the win.

“Coffs was a close game with only one goal in it.

“I'm always proud of the way Urunga plays, they earn a lot of respect and this tournament was no exception.

“I'm looking forward to the season, there is a good positive vibe in the team at the moment and the new Coastal League One competition with the new teams involved is definitely a part of the anticipation,” said Trevor.

Regional Sports Funded

By Tara CAMPBELL SPORT Australia has announced $1.9 million in Regional Sports Events Funding to support community sporting events, with an aim of kickstarting local economies and encouraging visitors back after the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The grants will also assist rural and regional communities that have been affected by flooding and natural disasters.

Minister for Sport, Richard Colbeck, said that LGAs outside the major cities will benefit from the $1.9 million investment from Sport Australia.

"Sport is often the glue that brings rural and regional communities together and this program aims to fast-track the recovery from what’s been a very challenging period for these parts of Australia," Minister Colbeck said.

"Local sporting clubs and associations play an incredibly important role

in regional Australia and through this fund, the Australian Government is encouraging communities to come together and celebrate through sport.

"Staging these events in regional and remote

communities will also benefit the small businesses that are central to local economies across the country."

Over 400 Local Governments are eligible to apply for stream one ($1,000-$10,000) and stream

Nambucca Roosters to host Port Macquarie Sharks

RUGBY League fans on the Mid North Coast will see the long awaited return of senior football to Coronation Park, Nambucca Heads this Saturday, 26 March when the Nambucca Roosters host the Port Macquarie Sharks in a trial match.

Saturday’s trial will be a much needed tune-up for both teams as they prepare for the 2022 season in their respective groups.

The Sharks are hopeful of a finals finish in Group 3 this year and the Nambucca Roosters, who have not had a senior team in Group 2 competition since 2018, are also feeling positive about their chances of finishing strongly in 2022.

Both clubs will field a Women’s League Tag side, an Under 18’s Mens and a Senior Team that will feature both first grade and reserve grade players.

News Of The Area spoke to the President of the Nambucca Roosters RLFC, Peter Bellden, who said, “This trial match is intended to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of our

new teams under game day conditions as well as being a hit out for the club and committee to put it all together for a home game.”

Co-coach of the senior teams, Garry Jarrett, told News Of The Area, “So many locals have wanted their beloved Nambucca Roosters back and now they have them so the town should turn up on Saturday and support their team.”

Garry added, “We are also looking for supporters of the Roosters to show up on the day and give the club a hand as volunteers to assist us in running the ground and hopefully help out for the rest of the season.”

Entry to the ground will be by gold coin donation with proceeds going to victims of the floods in Lismore.

Peter concluded by saying, “Locals can mingle with our players after the game on Saturday at the Nambucca Leagues and Sports Club, one of our major sponsors.”

Shortly after, the women’s event kicked off at 10am with teams from Nambucca, Coffs United, Kempsey Saints, Newington Gunners, Banigas, and Urunga FC in action.

“The most anticipated game of the day kicked off at 6:50 pm for the over 35’s grand final which saw Port United take home the win over Armidale City Westside.

“Speaking to the team afterwards they were absolutely stoked to take home the win and drink a beer from the perpetual trophy as they celebrated at the Strikers major sponsor, the Nambucca Leagues and Sports Club and enjoyed the live entertainment from Coffs band ‘Who’s Charlie’,” said Keily.

The Port United captain hailed the 42nd Challenge Cup as a wonderful event.

“We were so excited the cup was able to be held this year and we are very thankful to the Nambucca strikers for hosting this wonderful event and for having us come and play.

“We look forward to this event every year and we can’t wait to come back again next year,” he said.

“The best play of the weekend came from a (Christiano) Ronaldo style bicycle kick by a West Pymble player which resulted in a goal in their quarter final game against Armidale City Westside which resulted in cheers around the grounds.

Macksville junior cricketers to contest final

“The day ended at 4pm with Urunga Women’s team taking home the win in the grand final against Coffs United, it was Urunga’s sixth consecutive Challenge Cup grand final win.

“West Pymble took the win over Port United for their first Challenge Cup open men’s grand final win since 2016 and West Pymble finished off the day by singing

their famous song ‘I want to be a West Pymble player’.

“Overall a great weekend was had by all involved and a thousand thank yous were given by players who had finally been able to travel to Nambucca to play in the annual event.

“A big thank you to all teams that travelled to play football with us and to the committee, volunteers and sponsors that made this weekend such a success.

Coffs Harbour District Cricket Association’s junior grand finals are set to be decided this weekend.

The under 16s grand final sees Macksville Ex-Services and Coffs Colts facing off on Friday afternoon.

Bellingen/Dorrigo Cricket Clubs and Macksville Ex-Services play off for the under 14s premiership, while Sawtell - Sixers and Nana Glen - White meet in the under 12s season decider.

Diggers Cricket Club Inc. booked a spot in this year’s Coffs Harbour District Cricket Association’s first grade grand final, with a six wicket win against Sawtell in their preliminary final at Fitzroy Oval.

What is a grant of Letters of Administration?

TONY makes a will leaving the whole of his estate to his three children.

He appoints his brother as his executor.

When Tony passes-away many years later, his children take the will to Tony’s bank and ask for the proceeds of his bank accounts to be released to them.

The bank manager informs them that Tony’s brother, as executor, must apply to have the funds released.

The children explain to the bank manager that unfortunately, their uncle is also deceased.

They are informed that the bank therefore requires Letters of Administration.

The children make an appointment with a solicitor and ask them to write a letter of administration.

Unfortunately, it is not that simple.

A solicitor cannot write a letter of administration.

‘Letters of Administration’ is in fact a term that refers to a formal grant that is made by the Supreme Court.

The grant is similar to a grant of probate and the process involves filing a Summons and supporting Affidavits with the Court.

When the Court makes the grant, it posts a physical document, bound in red cardboard, carrying the seal of the Court, to the children’s solicitor.

Certified copies of this physical grant can then be used to realise the assets of the estate.

The children then attempt to use the grant to realise Tony’s superannuation.

The superannuation fund informs them that the balance of the fund does not automatically form part of Tony’s estate and in the absence of a binding death benefit nomination, the super fund can decide whether to pay the balance to the children, Tony’s estate or to any other dependents.

The superfund embarks on a drawnout line of enquiry spanning several months.

If Tony had obtained proper estate planning advice and updated his affairs, these headaches could have been avoided.

Many of the people who feature in this creative building series like to think outside the box. They say a man’s home is his castle, but what one person considers to be attractive, the other may find dull. With Sumita and Cameron Dale, it’s fair to say their dream home doesn’t really lend itself to any of these adjectives. The married ex-police officers shun convention by buying a plot of land to build their “lighthouse” dwelling.
