grants from the second round of the $20 million Supporting Cinemas’ Retention Endurance and Enhancement of Neighbourhoods (SCREEN) Fund.

Mr Conaghan said the latest grants would allow independent cinema operators to keep providing a popular, low-cost and COVID-safe way for people to go out and enjoy a movie as part of their local community.

“I’m pleased to announce that

and Sawtell have all been approved for grants as part of the Federal Government’s $20 million SCREEN Fund,” he said.

To date, the Federal Government has allocated $17.7 million from the SCREEN Fund to support 200 independent cinemas across the country to help them keep their doors open, continue offering employment opportunities, and entertain their communities with diverse stories.

In a second round of funding, announced in December, independent cinema operators

have experienced significant declines in revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Keiran Dell, the CEO of Majestic Cinemas and the VicePresident of the Independent Cinemas Association told News Of The Area, “It’s been a pretty tough period with COVID, bushfires and floods during the past two years.

“We’re not like a restaurant that can open up and go back to serving its previous menu.”

Mr Dell said cinemas rely on a global supply chain of films,

overseas, Hollywood in particular, are not always available.

He said the Independent Cinemas Association lobbied the Federal Government for the SCREEN Fund to be set up and that the first round helped cinemas.

He said that about half the committed funding was spent, so the Association asked for a second round and Mr Conaghan was instrumental in it being approved.

Mr Dell said, “We hope we are near the end of this period, and people are returning to cinemas, so we are very positive.”

The audience were also

invited to talk about their own experience of living in and around the Scotts Head area.

Rally attendee Angela, who has lived and raised three children in the area, asked the audience “to think about why they came to the area, and why they stayed”.

“Our children leave and then come back with their own families, this is an area that holds traditional culture, this is not about not wanting growth, but how that growth is done.”

Concerns over the village’s lack of infrastructure and medical services, habitat loss, and the potential loss of cultural lifestyle were presented to the audience.

Rally attendee Danielle Cranston said, “I’m concerned about the proposed bushfire conditions, (and) an increased aged population of this size is

not sustainable.”

Michael Crowley has only resided in Scotts Head for the last six months.

He moved here for the village lifestyle, but has already found sourcing medical services difficult.

“My wife and I moved here six months ago, for a small village lifestyle, and community connection.

“I’ve had a few accidents

MISSABOTTI farming couple, Brian and Raffie Harris, are up in arms about what they consider to be a disappointing effort by the Nambucca Valley Council to remediate their property following last year's replacement of Helliwells Bridge.

In June 2021 Mr and Mrs Harris signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Nambucca Valley Council agreeing that during the works Council could use a part of their property to store materials, make a burn pile, remove approximately 50 metres of fence and reinstate on completion, and put a temporary fence around the construction site.

The document also details how both parties would meet on site once agreed work had been completed and sign a document that indemnified Council of future recourse.

Brian and Raffie feel very strongly that Council has not lived up to their end of the bargain.

Brian Harris told News Of The Area, “A large burn pile of timbers was placed on my property and not fenced off which resulted in many uninvited people coming onto my land after hours and stealing timbers and other items from the site.

“I noted that much of the timber was treated and advised workmen they were not

of materials during the bridge replacement works.

“Council work practice is to enter into a MOU with the property owner which then ensures that the area is reinstated to the property owner's satisfaction at the completion.

“The team walk through the project with the property owner to ensure that they are satisfied and then we get them to sign off to close out the project.

“In this case the property owner was not satisfied and requested additional fence work which is being investigated by staff.”

Brian Harris states he has not had a walk through of the site with anyone from Council.

Mr Gallagher’s response went on to say that Council Officers have offered on several occasions to meet on site with the owner to go through and address any further concerns that they may have.

“Council's priority is to reinstate the footprint area that has been used during the construction to the property owners satisfaction and reinstate any fence work directly associated with (the) project.”

Brian said that on one occasion a Council Officer did arrange to meet him on site however did not show up.

“I am concerned there is a lack of morals being displayed here and I fear for other landowners who find themselves in similar circumstances,” Brian said.

Brian reports the pile was burned and sometime later the ash was crushed into the ground by heavy machinery, not removed, so he now wants the residue tested before he is able to allow cattle back into the affected area.

Brian noted during the construction of the bridge there were no toilet facilities made available for workers, with the nearest public amenities being four kilometres away.

For him one of the most concerning aspects of this process was when workers lit the very large burn pile of timbers.

“They lit the fire and just left in the afternoon leaving my wife and I to tend to the fire into the early hours of the morning so it did not get out of control and affect mine or neighbouring properties,” Brian said.

“I want Council to take responsibility for what they have done and test the soil from the burn and if necessary clean up any toxic waste.”

News Of The Area approached Nambucca Valley Council’s Assistant General Manager, Engineering Services, Mr Paul Gallagher for comment.

Ingenia hold Scotts Head forum

By Karen GRIBBIN INGENIA Lifestyle held an informative open day last Saturday at the Scotts Head Surf Club.

As reported previously in News Of The Area, Ingenia Lifestyle is proposing a new lifestyle village for over 55s at a site on Scotts Head Road, Scotts Head.

Proposal information states this site will be the only land Ingenia is acquiring, and the only land in the area they are intending to develop.

Land to the west of the site will be preserved under a conservation agreement to enhance biodiversity by replanting vegetation to create a green buffer from the proposed building site.

Ingenia states they are not acquiring land east of the site.

News Of The Area spoke with Kate Melrose, Executive General Manager with Ingenia Lifestyle.

“I understand the concerns of the Scotts Head community, today was to answer some of those concerns,” Kate said.

“Ingenia is the owner operator and will be here for the long term, the proposed

lifestyle community will not be sold on at a later date, Ingenia will manage the site long term.”

ORGANISERS are expecting tens of thousands of women and allies to participate in Women’s March4Justice events across Australia, to be held on February 27.

As Women’s March4Justice prepare to take to the streets again, they are demanding that the next Federal Government lead a review of sexual assault laws, secure increased funding for domestic violence, and introduce a national Gender Equality Act. Organisers are hoping to build on the historic action taken last year, when marches across the nation were sparked amid news of systemic sexual assault and

harassment at Parliament House, including Brittany Higgins’ alleged rape.

“Last year’s march was a catalyst for women and their allies to pull together and get organised,” said March4Justice founder Janine Hendry.

“This year, on the anniversary of that historic march, women are asking what’s improved?

“What’s changed for the better?

“They will be taking these questions with them to the ballot box.”

Bronwyn Currie, Melbourne event organiser said, "This federal election women will not be smiling and asking for change - we will be in the streets and

Kate said this is in fact not the case, instead housing will be built on site from scratch in line with the Management Manufacture Housing Sepp NSW, available at www.planning.nsw.gov. au/Policy-and-Legislation/Housing/ Housing-SEPP. “This proposal will in the short term create local employment for those in the building industry, and in the long term with on-site ground staff, social programming, and site maintenance,” said Kate.

Ingenia say they are very aware of the cultural heritage of the area and understand the concerns around a lack of medical infrastructure, parking, bushfire resources, and maintaining the village’s small community lifestyle.

“We will be holding other information days, there’ll need to be further community consultation.

“Community consultation will be done in a culturally respectful way, there is still a long way to go in this process,” said Kate.

Caz4Cowper launches campaign

By Andrea FERRARI A DRAMATIC increase in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, accidental injuries and mental health conditions will all put enormous pressure on our health system unless real action is taken on climate change.

That was the dire warning at Sunday’s campaign launch

by Independent candidate for the Federal seat of Cowper, Carolyn ‘Caz’ Heise.

"The northern campaign launch for Caz4Cowper was a huge success on Sunday,” Caz told News Of The Area.

“I'm heartened by the community support for me as their Independent candidate but also sense that Cowper is ready for a grassroots change.

“There is definitely a

growing dissatisfaction in our community and across Australia with the current state of federal politics and party politicians.

“Only an Independent can represent the voice of the community as a first priority.

“Our Southern launch is being held in Port Macquarie on Sunday 6 March, there is much ground swell there too.

“I really believe the time is right for Cowper voters to rise up, speak out and take positive action for our futures by voting 1 - Caz4Cowper.

A crowd of more than 200 enthusiastic people heard Dr Jon Ferguson endorse Caz’s as the best person to lead the fight for change in climate policy and create better outcomes for Cowper.

“Climate change is already impacting on the health of people in Cowper,” Dr Ferguson said.

Caz, a nurse and health services administrator, who was a former Director of Nursing and Midwifery at Coffs Harbour Health Campus, said it was time to take advantage of the opportunities which came with real action on climate change.

Healthy lifestyle support for seniors

FLEXIBILITY, balance, eating a healthy diet and generally living well can slip from our daily lifestyle choices as we age.

To inspire the motivation to eat well and keep nimble, the Healthy and Active for Life Online program has been created.

Registration is open now and closes on 14 April.

Healthy and Active for Life Online is a free healthy lifestyle program for people aged 60 years and over, and Aboriginal people aged 45 years and over, living in the Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD).

The program is a NSW Health initiative designed for people who are living at home

and who wish to increase their confidence, knowledge and skills to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.

The program includes access to ten self-directed online modules on healthy lifestyle topics and a home exercise program.

Participants will also receive a weekly phone call from a trained phone coach at a time that suits them.

MNCLHD Health Promotion Officer Margo Johnston said the ten-week program offers a great opportunity to get active and learn about healthy lifestyle habits from the comfort of home.

“As well as learning about healthy eating, the program will also teach you some simple exercise programs

that will keep you moving for longer,” Margo told News Of The Area.

“All you need is internet access, a computer or tablet and some space to exercise.

“The program is so convenient as you can receive advice from trained coaches at a time that suits you in our own home.

“I would encourage anyone thinking about becoming more active and healthy to sign up,” said Margo.

ON 17/2/22 Police arrested a 33-year-old woman at a Nambucca Heads address who was wanted for a number of outstanding matters as well as breaching bail conditions.

The accused woman appeared before Macksville Local Court the same date with the matter subsequently adjourned to 24/2/22.

On 17/2/22 Police issued a 51-year-old woman with a court attendance notice following a domestic violence incident that occurred at a Nambucca Heads address the previous day.

On 17/2/22 at about 4:10pm emergency services were alerted to a motor vehicle accident on the Pacific Hwy, Nambucca Heads near the Corkwood Rd exit ramp.

As a result the vehicle became airborne before rolling and coming to rest back on its wheels.

Nambucca Senior Citizens Open Day a Success

q Members of Northern Rivers Burlesque delighted visitors at the Nambucca Senior Citizens Centre Open Day.

DESPITE the inclement weather, organisers of the Nambucca Senior Citizens Open Day are declaring the event a success with a steady flow of interested locals filing through to take in displays and stalls put on by frequent users of the centre.

Nambucca Valley Mayor, Rhonda Hoban OAM, officially opened the event which also included the launch of the centre’s new permanent display, The Eichmann Exhibition, with many of John Eichmann’s descendants present.

For $5 a well produced booklet about John Eichmann is available to complement the exhibition with proceeds from the booklet going to support the Headland Museum.

Nambucca Valley Radio 105.9 FM conducted a live broadcast from the event throughout the day interviewing stall holders and providing background music.

There were dazzling performances by Ruth’s Dancers and visually spectacular acts from Northern Rivers Burlesque.

Visitors also enjoyed visiting stalls by the Stringer

Gallery Art Classes, Nambucca Writers Group, the Orchid Society and many more.

Marine Rescue Nambucca and Wires Mid North Coast had volunteers on hand to provide visitors to the centre advice and information and both organisations were also actively looking for more volunteers to keep up their vital work in the community.

President of the Nambucca Senior Citizens Centre, Dianne Gulson, told News of the Area, “It was wonderful for the visitors to see how the centre had been improved over the past few years to once again become a valued community space.”

Covid-19 Settings Updates THE NSW Government has further eased restrictions as the state continues to manage the impacts of Covid-19.

From the beginning of Friday, 18 February 2022, the following adjustments were made to the settings: • No density limits (previously one person per 2sqm for hospitality venues); • QR check-ins will only be required for nightclubs, and for all music festivals with more than 1,000 people.

Hospitals, aged and disability facilities may use their existing systems for recording visitors; • Singing and dancing will be permitted at all venues, except music festivals, where singing and dancing can recommence from 25 February; • The recommendation to work from home will change and be returned to the employer’s discretion.

From the beginning of Friday, 25 February 2022, the following adjustments will be made to the settings: • Masks will only be mandated on public

transport, planes, and indoors at airports, hospitals, aged and disability care facilities, corrections facilities and indoor music festivals with more than 1,000 people; • Masks are encouraged for indoor settings where you cannot maintain a safe distance from others and for customer facing retail staff to protect vulnerable people who must access these premises and services; • Each State Government agency will review where it may be appropriate for public-facing staff to wear masks and will implement as necessary; and • The 20,000 person cap on music festivals will be removed, with singing and dancing permitted.

Vaccination requirements will remain for indoor music festivals over 1,000 people, with attendees required to have at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Hotel quarantine for unvaccinated returning travellers will be reduced from 14 to 7 days from 21 February.

With hospitalisation and ICU rates easing and booster uptake now above 50 percent a staged return of non-urgent elective surgery across all NSW public hospitals has commenced and will be increased through February to March.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the NSW Government is continuing to adopt a flexible and measured approach to protect the community and our health system.

“We don’t want

restrictions in place for any longer than necessary and with hospitalisation and ICU rates trending downwards now is the right time to make sensible changes,” Mr Perrottet said.

“As we continue to move forward out of the pandemic we are ensuring that we keep people safe and people in jobs so life can return to normal as quickly and safely as possible.

“Our frontline health staff have done an incredible job protecting the community and we need everyone to step

up and do the right thing and get their booster shots to help keep themselves, their family and the community safe.”

Deputy Premier Paul Toole said the NSW Government has worked hard to strike the right balance between re-opening the State and keeping everyone safe.

“Regional communities have already welcomed back visitors with open arms, and these further freedoms are a big win for everyone who has done the right thing to get us this far,” Mr Toole said.

“This measured response will reinvigorate our regional communities, with country shows, festivals and other major events able to return bigger than ever.”

Minister for Health Brad Hazzard said we needed everyone to play their part as we dealt with the challenges the pandemic would continue to throw at us.

“As we are moving more into the endemic stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, these changes are giving us more of our old life back but it still makes a lot of sense for us all to be cautious,” Mr Hazzard said.

“The best outcome is still to avoid getting the virus by protecting yourself, your family and the broader community.”

People aged 16 years and older can receive their booster dose at three months after receiving their second dose of any of the COVID-19 vaccines.

HIPPY Taking 2022 Enrolments

THE HIPPY (Home Interaction Program, designed to support and empower for Parents and Youngsters) program is currently enrolling families for 2022.

HIPPY is a free, a free, two-year early learning program, designed to support and empower parents as their child’s first teachers.

In the first year of HIPPY, the year before school begins, families learn skills to get their children school-ready.

In the second year, parents learn more about supporting their children’s learning and development at school and at home.

“As the HIPPY Coordinator I believe parents love their children and want the best for their children,” said Nadia Farrah, HIPPY Coordinator.

With programs and activities designed by Early Childhood Educators, HIPPY supports parents in the task of getting their children to school readiness, and carrying that support throughout the child’s first year of schooling.

“We work with a holistic approach to support and empower parents in being the first teachers of their children,”said Nadia.

Sophie, a HIPPY participant, shared with News Of The Area her personal journey with the program.

“It was during a visit to the newborn health clinic with my baby that I first heard about the HIPPY program.

"I had my three-year-old son with me at one of my visits there and Virginia the baby nurse mentioned the HIPPY program as my son would soon be turning four.

“She handed me a flyer and I liked the sound of it so got in touch with Nadia the HIPPY coordinator and signed up.

“Initially I was a bit worried about being able to commit my time for the two years but soon realised that the

CHILDREN’S book packs began to be dropped around the Nambucca Valley on 16 February.

A neat little parcel, carefully wrapped and laid in locations easy to find, ready to fill a little heart with joy and provide some new stories to read with your child or children.

The Lifetime Connect Ready Set Go program, which is Federally funded through the Department of Social Services, has been delivering a variety of programs over six years in the Valley.

The main focus of the program is school readiness, and helping parents decide when is the right time for their child to start their formal school journey.

Fortunately for the

community of the Nambucca Valley, the Ready Set Go program now includes a Book Hunt.

News Of The Area asked Ms Eddie Dangar, Early Years Coordinator for Lifetime Connect, why the Book Packs were added to the program.

Ms Dangar explained that good quality books were donated to Ready Set Go by the community, including from Nambucca Family Day Care, and Lifetime Connect educator Heidi Steele was inspired by the ‘Big Book Drop Nambucca Valley’ on Facebook.

The Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction at Frank Partridge VC Public School was contacted to see if Lifetime Connect could continue with the initiative.

Lifetime Connect was given the go-ahead and the Lifetime Connect Book Hunt was created.

Macksville and Nambucca Heads Libraries organise ‘story time’ and in the coming weeks HIPPY will be taking part, facilitating a session at both libraries in the same week on a monthly basis.

Grants To Plant Trees For The Queen

THE Planting Trees for The Queen’s Jubilee Program is one of a range of national and community events planned by the Australian Government to celebrate the legacy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, and her 70 years of service to Australia and the Commonwealth.

Eligible groups and organisations are invited

to contact the office of the Federal Member for Cowper, Pat Conaghan, to discuss potential projects for nomination for a grant to plant trees in honour of the occasion.

The Queen has visited Australia on sixteen occasions, and, on many of these visits, has planted trees at community events and ceremonies, leaving a long-lasting reminder of

the special occasion for the people in those communities.

In fact, the Queen is said to have planted 1500 trees throughout her reign.

Mr Conaghan welcomed the opportunity for local community groups to play a part in the celebrations.

He said, “A wide range of groups and organisations are eligible to apply, from community and environment groups through to councils and schools and we’d love to see Cowper well represented.”

THE Scraps to Soil Composting Workshop is a free instructive session to be held at Nambucca Heads Growing Together Community Garden, run by Nambucca Valley Council, MidWaste and the Let’s Get

Composting team.

“Come along to this free workshop to find out how to get started composting and worm farming at home to create rich compost to make your garden grow,” said Ali Bigg, MidWaste Coordinator.

“You will learn the value of composting and

how it works, setting up your system, managing and maintaining your new compost bin or worm farm, how to use compost products, troubleshooting and more.

This program is part of the Let’s Get Composting Coffs Coast initiative, which is designed to support the Nambucca, Bellingen and Coffs communities to make the most of their kerbside bins and save money in the process.

Students learn vital bus safety life skills KINDERGARTEN students at Nambucca Heads Public School learned some vital bus safety skills last week, just in time for Bus Safety Week.

Assistant Principal Leah Millar booked the Busways’ session to help teach the school’s newest students how to be safe on and around buses.

“It’s so important that students learn these lessons as buses are big heavy vehicles that are always around schools,” Ms Millar said.

“The safety lesson for our kindergarten students was highly engaging, the kids loved it and took home some real safety tips!”

Local bus operator Busways offers the free incursions to any primary school within their service areas in Sydney, on the Central Coast, on the NSW North Coast and in Adelaide.

THE landmark mandate to include consent education in the Australian curriculum has passed in Parliament this week.

This is a historic win for not only young people across Australia, but for campaigns including Chanel Contos’ ‘Teach Us Consent’ campaign,

which has been the largest advocating petition for this mandate.

VW Spectacular date set

VW SPECTACULAR is on.

Running from 24 July to 1 August, this is the 23rd show of the bi-annual event, which has run over 39 years.

The venue is Macksville Showground.

The VW Spectacular is one of the nation’s classic enthusiast events.

It’s a total immersion in the world of the iconic vehicle that’s held in the hearts of many Australians.

“It is great that the locals get behind us and VW people come from all over the country and join in everything,” Donna Pell, cofounder and organiser told News Of The Area.

“This year the theme for our Saturday night sitdown dinner at Macksville Showground is ‘Country and Western’ and there’s prizes for Best Dressed Couple and Best Dressed Family.

“Also new this year for the kids is Christmas in July with Santa coming on a fire truck.”

Regular events are back, such as the People’s Choicejudged Show and Shine.

“The vehicles that get the highest scores win the top 10 presentation and will receive hand-made unique trophies.”

They will be presented at Macksville Showground on

the Sunday morning.

“We have cruises in convoy from the Monday right through to the following Sunday.

“We try to show as much of our beautiful area as some of these people come from as far as Tasmania and there’s someone from every state; they might not have seen our beautiful area.

“We go to Bowraville, Macksville, Nambucca, Bellingen and Dorrigo and throw in a couple of mystery tours – at the moment I have no idea where we’ll go, that’s why they’re called mystery tours,” Donna laughed.

“People can expect a great family, car-orientated week with car events, tourist events and an opportunity to catch-up with VW friends from past years.”

As a tourism opportunity for the local accommodation businesses the week is a high point during the quietest season of the year.

“People book into everything from campsites, to renting homes through the local real estates, to B&Bs, hotels and motels.

“Some people come for one day, others for eight and they come in everything from the worst VW to the best show cars.

“Everyone is welcome,

as long as they love VW’s,” encourages Donna.

“Over the past 38 years we have had over 750 VWs coming from just about every part of Australia.

“One of the biggest changes we have noticed is that originally most vehicles were Beetles, now the VW Kombis have been resurrected.

“Some of the older models of Kombis are now (worth) in excess of $80,000.”

Safeguarding impounded animals

LAST week a historical Bill has passed in NSW Legislative Assembly legislating that that councils must take certain steps towards rehoming a seized or surrendered animal before euthanizing the animal, including working with rehoming organisations.

This is a large first step towards safeguarding the lives of impounded animals across the state.

The Companion Animals Amendment (Rehoming Animals) Bill 2021 now includes a number of reforms to ensure that local Councils are held accountable in taking steps to rehome surrendered animals.

"This is a huge step in the right direction and will help build on a lot of the good

work that many councils have already achieved," said RSPCA NSW CEO Steve Coleman.

"Every animal deserves a fair go at a second chance, and we can only achieve this by working together.

"More than anything, this Bill sets up the framework for a solid network dedicated to saving more animals' lives,” Mr Coleman said.

RSPCA NSW welcomes the opportunity to work with the NSW Government on the implementation of the Bill to ensure the accompanying regulations assist councils and rehoming organisations to best achieve the Bill’s intent.

“These changes display the reliance of the NSW Government and the local government sector on animal

rehoming charities and organisations,” Mr Coleman said.

Reforms to the Bill include the following: - Before action is taken to destroy a seized or surrendered animal, councils must give written notice to at least two rehoming organisations to inform them that the animal is available for rehoming and take reasonable steps to advertise the animal as available for rehoming.

- The written notice must specify the period of time, not less than seven days from the date the notice is given, during which the animal is available for rehoming.

While net migration to the regions remains strong, the number of people relocating to the regions in the December 2021 quarter was down ten percent compared to the previous quarter.

This was partly due to the high movement already seen in previous quarters, as well as seasonal conditions, and accelerated regional housing price growth.

Looking at the full year, the Gold Coast remained the most popular destination among metro-movers in 2021, welcoming eleven percent of all people who moved from capital cities.

The Sunshine Coast wasn’t far behind (five

percent), followed by Greater Geelong (four percent) and Wollongong (three percent).

Australia’s two largest capital cities saw the majority of net outflows in 2021, with Sydney and Melbourne representing 53 per cent and 46 per cent of net outflows respectively.

Throughout 2021, New South Wales absorbed 50 per cent of the net inflows of people moving to regional Australia, while Queensland and Victoria each picked up 20 and 21 percent of the inflows respectively.

The areas recording the strongest annual growth in migration through 2021 were located in Queensland and South Australia, with SA’s Port Augusta topping the list (54 percent growth), followed by the Queensland local government areas of Douglas (49 percent) and Western Downs (48 percent).

NAMBUCCA Valley Council’s Assistant General Manager, Engineering Services, Paul Gallagher, advises that the ongoing wet weather continues to impact the condition of a considerable part of the 345 kilometres of unsealed rural roads in the LGA. The March 2021 flood event had a significant impact on the road infrastructure and the

recovery process is ongoing.

Council is aware there are numerous potholes, corrugations and gravel loss on some roads.

Humid weather conditions have also increased vegetation growth along the road reserves which, in some cases, has impacted the travel lanes.

“Council continues to receive many calls reporting the road conditions.

“However, the priority is on higher use roads and bus

routes to enable residents to get into town, and other repairs may take a few months,” said Mr Gallagher.

Council apologises for the inconvenience to residents and road users and asks that they remain patient and drive to the road conditions as maintenance works continue around the Valley.

The latest Regional Movers Index – a partnership between the Commonwealth Bank and the Regional Australia Institute (RAI) – analyses the quarterly and

annual trends in people moving to Australia’s regions.

OUR refurbishment of the 17th Hole reached completion with the Bunker being returned to play on Saturday.

The bunker has been substantially reduced in length and will still test the skills of anyone failing to reach the green. The new turf in front of the green is coming along nicely, assisted by good rainfall to promote quick growth.

Second bite at cherry after divorce PETER and Michelle separate after a 20 year relationship.

Twelve months later, a divorce order is granted.

Peter puts an offer to Michelle regarding the division of their property.

They both seek legal advice.

The parties ultimately settle on a 60/40 split in favour of Michelle.

Consent orders under the Family Law Act are drafted to finalise the arrangement.

Peter takes the opportunity to discuss his estate planning with a specialist.

The solicitor advises him that despite the finalisation of the property settlement under Commonwealth legislation, Michelle is still able to make a family provision claim against Peter’s estate upon his death.

Peter believes that he was generous in relation to the property settlement and is concerned that if Michelle also made a claim against his estate, the result would not be fair to his children.

Peter is advised that Michelle can only be prevented from making a claim if an order is made by the Supreme Court of New South Wales under State legislation.

Peter decides that due to the relatively high value of the assets involved in a property settlement, the costs of making the application are justified.

The solicitors draft a Deed of Release, with the effect that Michelle is precluded from making a claim against Peter’s estate, on the condition that the property settlement consent orders are made under the Family Law Act. Affidavits detailing the settlement are filed in support of the application.

In determining the application, the Supreme Court considers whether, in the context of the property settlement, the release is to Michelle’s advantage and whether the release is “prudent”. The Court also considers whether the release is “fair and reasonable” and on the basis that Peter and Michelle each received independent legal advice, grants the application to approve the release of Michelle’s rights to make a claim against Peter’s estate.

Peter makes a new will, leaving the whole of his estate to his children, in the knowledge that Michelle cannot have a second bite at the cherry.

Holes in Conaghan’s koala plan DEAR News Of The Area,

I AM writing in response to a recent article by Andrew Vivian about koalas in News Of The Area.

Pat Conaghan of the National Party has announced that he is using impressive sums of money for koalas.

I am glad Pat is clearly concerned about the loss of biodiversity in NSW and is not engaged in political ‘greenwashing’ as some would suggest.

I would, however, like to mention a couple of problems with Pat’s approach to this issue.

The North East Forest Alliance has determined that about 140,000 ha of native forest have been identified for clear-felling on the North Coast between Taree and Grafton (much of which is for woodchip).

This harvesting of our native forests is fully supported by the National Party and unfortunately the taxpayer is paying for the privilege of having public forests destroyed.

Large areas of our native forests have been clear-felled already – forest that, as Pat proudly points out, has one of the largest populations of

koalas in the State.

It is fantastic that Pat has allocated money for the planting of trees for koalas but it is possible that by the time they have grown to a reasonable size, in about 40 years, koalas may have gone the way of the dinosaur.

I am aware that large sums of money have been allocated by Pat’s political party for wildlife boxes to maintain biodiversity.

It is probably an oversight on Pat’s part that, as most of our State Forests are clear-felled, there will be no trees to hang the wildlife boxes on which will be a shame.

Pat has pointed out that money will be allocated for “koala treatment and care” and improving koala “health outcomes”.

I have been thinking that maybe a few million dollars should be spent on affordable housing for koalas as all the trees disappear and perhaps another few million for koala food as there will be a chronic shortage of gum leaves. Nevertheless, I have complete faith in you Pat, I know you are a logical thinker and your motives are admirable.

It also strikes easily from cuttings.

You can plant seedlings out any time, though autumn and spring will be the best seasons to get them going.

Tea can survive frost once it is established but it will need protection while still a young soft plant.

Tea likes full sun, a well drained position with decent moisture available.

No fussing or care required.

It takes around three years to grow to full size, 1-2m in height and width, though you can

ON the theme of food resilience for our area, for many regions they would simply have to give up their caffeinated habits once supplies were gone, but we would not.

Tea, coffee, sugarcane and other sweeteners all grow very well here.

And we have cows and goats for milk, and macadamias for a non-dairy alternative.

The effort goes into processing with a lot of these, not the growing.

Our often acidic soils around here suit camellia, and indeed tea bushes grow really well all by themselves.

As one grower remarked, it's “tough as nails”.

That's what we want!

And the plant can last for q It's the differences in the age of the leaves and varying steps of wilting, macerating, steaming, then heating or drying that create the variations in flavour.

A friend recently asked me to look after her dog Claudice while she travelled for a month.

She is due back next week, and the dog and I have bonded.

I've also taught Claudice some basic obedience including sit and stay, which my friend said she's never been able to achieve.

I think it's in Claudice's best interests if she stays with me.

She was formerly an outdoor dog, but now enjoys sleeping in my bed (head on the pillow).

I suggest you start tonight with a bed in the laundry (just for the dog, in case you have visions of both of you in there). If you need some four-legged company, you will need to get your own pet.

I'd also suggest declining any future requests for dog minding until you learn some detachment strategies.

Carpe diem, Jasminda begin making tea as soon as the plant is large enough to cope with losing a few leaves here and there.

Tea leaf growth here involves a spring and an autumn flush.

You will need to prune to encourage leaf growth so you have plenty of the young leaves to pick and drink.

It responds well to pruning which is code for it's difficult to mess this up for this plant.

You can absolutely use fresh leaves to make tea.

It's the differences in the age of the leaves and varying steps of wilting, macerating, steaming, then heating or drying that create the variations in flavour.

There’s a lot to love about Eurovision; it’s the singing competition that takes Europe by storm. Since 2015, Aussie viewers have had an extra incentive to tune in and enjoy the spectacle, with Australia joining the list of competitors (only the second country outside of Europe to do so). Tonight, hosts Joel Creasey and Myf Warhurst showcase the artists, including Paulini, and Jaguar Jonze and Isaiah Firebrace, competing for their chance to represent Australia.

Knowing when to pull the plug on a hit drama is a sign of clever and conscientious writers. Tonight, after three enthralling, unpredictable seasons, the final instalment of Killing Eve is premiering with a racing pulse of gunshots, messy relationships, gorgeous clothes and breathtaking locations; for a spy thriller, it revels in subverting our expectations of genre and characters. After an almost twoyear wait, the anticipation of what befalls Eve (Sandra Oh, right) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer) is skyhigh and, as with past seasons, there’s an exciting new showrunner in Laura Neal (Sex Education).

In “Just Dunk Me”, Villanelle has found a fresh community to try to prove she is not a monster.

Bruce Willis plays a security guard undergoing a midlife crisis who emerges unscathed from a train crash which kills everyone else on board. This brings him to the attention of a brittle-boned comic book art gallery owner (Samuel L. Jackson), who believes there must be a higher earthly purpose for the “unbreakable” Willis. Director M. Night Shyamalan (Signs, The Sixth Sense) delivers another slow-burning tale of the supernatural, with a vicious twist.

THE 2022 NSW Country Swimming Championships were held at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre from 18-20 February “These Championships are held every year this time in Sydney at one of the best swimming pools in the world,” said Faye Rowles, Swimming North Coast.

This year 118 swimmers entered 527 events from 17 clubs.

“This number was slightly down on last year which is understandable with COVID still in our midst,” Faye said.

“This year swimmers won 29 medals and 75 swimmers were placed in the top ten for their age group, distance and stroke.”

Unfortunately, whilst event 108 was being run a swimmer was sick in the pool, meaning the whole event had to be closed down with another 53 events to be run, leaving swimmers devastated not to be able to swim for qualifying times and medals.

Results for Macksville swimmers are as follows.

Leah Pickvance: (14) 3rd 50 free, 10th 100 back and 17th 50 fly.

Bailey Whitton: (15) 3rd 200 fly, 6th 200 free, 29th 50 Breast, 13th 50 free and 20th 50 fly.

Benjamin Barlow: 16th 100 Breast, 13th 100 back.
