In second place for the grant, Nambucca Scouts are grateful their application was successful.

Nikky Stapleton, Nambucca Scouts’ Treasurer, who manages the clubs financial accounts and fundraising, told News Of The Area, “If we were going to miss out on first place, we’re happy it was to the rural firies (Coomba Park Rural Fire Service Brigade) who always do an awesome job and have had it so tough this year and last.”

Saturday, 18 September after they had seen the damage that had been caused.

Many of the solar LED lights along the V-Wall walkway leading up to Wellington Beach had been needlessly vandalised.

The number has been counted at 23 solar LED lights damaged… smashed and with parts missing.

Early morning walkers were greeted with smashed glass all over the path.

News Of The Area has been advised of further vandalism and theft at the holiday park.

A camper had their tables and chairs removed, plus some fishing gear stolen from their car, on the same night.

Detective Chief Inspector Darren Jameson from Nambucca Valley Police is aware of the incident and it is currently under investigation.

The incident has led some locals to question whether the installation of security cameras at the location would be an effective deterrent.

Michael Coulter, GM Nambucca Valley Council said, “Scale of vandalism is far bigger than what people see in the Nambucca Valley.

“Toilet blocks, playgrounds, parks across a large area are vandalised,” said Mr Coulter.

“Security cameras can be helpful in policing sometimes.

“But depending on the age of the people involved they are not always a solution.

“People wear hoodies to cover their faces, they disguise themselves.

“The security cameras don’t always act as a deterrent, and are often damaged themselves.

“The cost to install and maintain the cameras is questionable when dealing with low level vandalism.”

Mr Coulter said that the LED Solar lights will be replaced.

NAMBUCCA Valley Mayor Rhonda Hoban OAM is pleased to announce that Nambucca Valley Council is trialling a shared zone on Wallace Lane, Macksville.

“The project is part of a state-

wide program to test and pilot new and innovative ideas for streets as safe, shared public spaces,” she said.

Macksville Medical Centre opens Pfizer clinic for the community THE Macksville Medical Centre, an approved Covid-19 vaccination provider, successfully opened a Pfizer clinic last

week, and is now taking bookings.

“Vaccine bookings are available for everyone in the community, not just current

The Greater Bank is giving away $3,000 in grants every month, inviting

“If there’s one thing that I learnt in the army it is to lead by example.

“I am just trying to set the right example of just being very open about my struggles and all the stories I hear on the way.”

When News Of The Area caught up with Anton earlier on his journey, he was walking alongside Northern NSW Masterchef Contestant Brent Draper, who pulled the pin on his Masterchef journey when he realised that his mental health was suffering.

The hardworking Aussie tradie was initially hoping to explore life away from the tools in the MasterChef kitchen.

Brent was seen by some as a strong contender to win the series however after a challenging cook in the Masterchef kitchen he famously put up his hand and said “I can’t cook”.

In the months since Masterchef, Brent has spent time on himself and is now in a better place.

When Anton arrived in Coffs Harbour he had walked barefoot for around 2065km’s and 2141km’s when reaching Nambucca Heads.

IT’s been a simple matter of putting one foot in front of the other.

It’s just that Dutchman Anton Nootenboom has been putting one bare foot in front of the next all the way from tropical Far North Queensland.

He left Cairns on foot in May, and has reached the Nambucca Valley, on his way to Sydney in a world record barefoot trek.

Anton has already beaten the world record for a barefoot walk when he passed through the Gold Coast but the full trip from Cairns to Sydney will set a record that will be very hard to beat for anyone brave enough to follow in his footsteps.

With feet worn down by concrete like sandpaper and bruised by stones, this epic journey is no race, rather a slow and steady effort that sees Anton walking with no set stops other than the final destination, his adopted hometown of Sydney, 2,600 km’s from his starting point.

This isn’t Anton’s first barefoot trek either.

In 2019 he was the first person to walk barefoot to the Mt Everest Base Camp.

On that journey he raised awareness of men’s mental health issues.

Anton served in the Dutch army for ten years, including three missions to Afghanistan and he has spent the last five years working in construction, both of which are seen as very 'masculine' environments.

Throughout his time in these industries, Anton saw and experienced men's mental health issues firsthand.

Anton is strong in the belief that men need to talk about their issues.

He welcomes people to walk alongside him on his journey, and to talk about mental health, which he believes needs to be destigmatised.

STEVE and Thea Kimber have launched a new business to complement their community based and well stocked Nambucca Heads Newsagency.

E-bikes.

The Kimber’s moved to Nambucca Heads in November 2020 after taking over ownership of the Nambucca Heads Newsagency.

Moving from Victoria, which in many areas is renowned for its flatness, they noticed the varied topography of the Nambucca Valley.

This gave them the idea of launching an E-bike for hire business as an addition to the newsagency.

Mr and Mrs Kimber spoke to News Of The Area about the decision to launch an E-bike business in the Valley.

Mr Kimber said, “E-bikes are a great asset in the Valley because of the hills.

“It makes it possible to ride a long distance in the area, see the beautiful sites, and have the benefit of a little help.”

Mr and Mrs Kimber ride their own e-bikes from Kingsworth every other day.

They love the benefits of physical exercise, and the fact that “we can’t remember the last time that we had to pay for petrol”.

There are 24”, 26”, and 27” bikes for hire, or hire to buy.

It is possible to rent the bikes for a range of different times.

There is also the option of renting to see how it goes, and then to set up a payment scheme to buy.

Mr Kimber said, “It is a clean, green way of getting around.

“The battery is put on charge overnight, and this will give the rider 50-60kms of riding.”

The choice is there for the rider as to the

intensity of the ride they want to have, with varying levels of assistance available.

This makes the bikes available for all ages and abilities.

Mrs Kimber, who was a keen cyclist in the past, told News Of The Area, “The bikes are kind to your body.

“I used to ride a lot but knee problems stopped me.

“Now I can ride every day if I want to, with the additional power that is provided to me with the e-bike.”

Kids Music Workshops

GROW the Music workshops hosted

by Nambucca Valley Council for the Valley’s children, will take place on Tuesday 28 September.

With COVID having its impact across the state many children have missed out on school time with friends, out of school activities or regular holidays away, so these workshops have been created to give families a fun time out of the house and a chance to get creative.

Nambucca Valley Council said it was a plus to be able to take the workshops out to the region’s rural communities, with one workshop to be held at South Arm and the other at Taylors Arm. Often families in these rural areas have to travel much further for activities and it can add to the stress and the cost of an event.

Having a local activity is an easy and cheap option for the holidays, and the workshops are free.

Grow the Music’s Emily White describes the workshop as a great way to engage with young people, working together to make and play tyre drums.

Participants will get hands on creating and decorating the drums, learning and playing new rhythms, and the drums are recycled and can be reused – a sustainable package.

THE Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) has released figures that show rapid decline in koala populations.

Their information shows that since 2018 koala numbers across Australia have reduced from populations of between 45,745 to 82,170 to a currently-estimated 32,065 to 57,920.

The AKF has invested millions of dollars and 30 years of research into the creation of the Koala Habitat Atlas, and periodically revises the koala population.

The AKF has estimated koala numbers in each of the 128 federal electorates that have, or did have, koalas since white settlement.

The numbers show a disturbing trend, with a 30% decline in total national koala population since 2018.

NSW is the worst with a 41% decline and every region across Australia saw a decline in population.

Koalas are now extinct in 47 electorates and only one electorate, Mayo, has more than 5000 koalas.

Some regions have remaining populations estimated to be as small as

just 5-10 koalas.

AKF figures show that Cowper has the largest koala population in NSW, but numbers are still dropping.

Cowper is one of only four electorates with more than 60% of its original koala habitat remaining.

Chair of the Australian Koala Foundation, Deborah Tabart OAM, said she is hoping Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley will take notice of these numbers and do more to protect koala habitat.

Ms Tabart said, “Each and every federal politician in these electorates should now be on notice to protect not only the koalas in their electorate but the habitat that remains.

“The good news is that in many cases there is good habitat left – now.

“The terrible bushfires of 2019-20, of course, contributed to this outcome, but they are certainly not the only reason we are seeing koala populations on the decline.

“Land clearing is lethal to koala populations,” she said.

“Over the past few years, we have seen huge land clearance, particularly across NSW and South East Queensland, for farming, housing development and mining.”

“We pride ourselves on ‘sticking up our hand’ to support a variety of causes in all our local areas via our cinemas, and we have done so for many years,” said Kieren.

“I knew we could do more, especially at a time where we

are all feeling the stresses and strains of lockdowns.

“Reach for Help week will be an annual event held in honour of my daughter Maddy and every other family that has lost loved ones, in the hope we can help to prevent it happening in future.”

The inaugural event will take place across the middle week of the September school holidays with Majestic Cinemas hoping the timing will help raise significant funds for the charity organisation and this important cause.

Children’s voices poster competition winners CELEBRATING the power of children’s voices in shaping the way they want to be treated, the Nambucca Valley poster competition has announced the winners of its National Child Protection week activity.

Mel Kemp, Bowraville’s St Mary's School Child and Family Support worker, initiated the competition across the region’s schools to ensure that every child and young person's voice of the Nambucca Valley is represented and heard by every parent, community member and service provider.

“Children's voices hold the power to guide adults on how to best respond allowing every child, in every community an opportunity to thrive,” Mel said.

“The poster competition

allowed for children and young people to express their needs in a creative way.

“All students communicated that it takes more than just your family to have your needs met and to feel safe.”

Community, school, nature, fruit trees, gardens, playgrounds, food and sports fields were the most common themes of the posters.

“Service providers across the Nambucca Valley collaborated to assist in reaching as many children and young people as we could and were involved in selecting the finalists and donated prizes.”

Services include: Jaanymili Bawrrugga, Lifetime Connect, Pathfinders, CASPA Aboriginal services and support program, Interrelate, Bowra Youth Hub and OneMob Radio.

Nambucca Valley Arts Council has extended

‘Australiana' to allow more people the chance to view the fine pastel works on display, as public health orders have now been relaxed.

Steve Sheppard will then be Artist of the Month for October, displaying mainly small-scale drawings, alongside acrylic paintings and reliefs.

Finalists were selected via Zoom with all service providers on the Monday and Nambucca Valley Mayor Rhonda Hoban judged the winners on the following Thursday, 16 September in the council chambers.

Winners were announced on OneMob Radio, with prizes and certificates delivered on Friday as well.

Family Court asked to Bust the Trust AFTER 30 years of marriage, Daniel and Rachel separate and divorce.

They cannot agree on the division of their assets and Daniel commences property settlement proceedings in the Family Court.

The Court hears that Rachel has an interest in a testamentary trust by way of an inheritance from her father.

The assets of the trust are valued in excess of $3 million and Rachel and her sister are the trustees of the trust and the “primary beneficiaries”.

Daniel argues that Rachel is entitled to half of the assets of the trust and that for the purposes of the property settlement, $1.5 million should be assessed as being Rachel’s property.

The Court hears evidence that Rachel and her sister have already received substantial, equal distributions from the trust.

Rachel argues that although she is a trustee, the terms of her late father’s will create a discretionary trust whereby the beneficiaries can include her children, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews and charities.

She says that she has no power to decide who receives distributions from the trust, as the decision requires unanimous agreement with her sister and accordingly, it is not “her money” but family trust money.

The Court concludes that Rachel’s interest in the trust cannot be characterised as “her property” and that it is not proper for it to be identified as an asset of the parties, for the purposes of the division of the matrimonial pool of assets.

The Court nonetheless decides that Rachel’s interest in the trust is a significant financial resource that is relevant to her future financial needs and after considering the contributions of the parties during the relationship, concludes that Daniel shall receive a 10% adjustment in his favour regarding the division of the matrimonial pool.

Life Saving Patrols now in place across Nambucca Valley beaches

Still time to apply for local bushfire recovery grants OPINION

DEAR News Of The Area, YOU may be aware that under the Morrison Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Recovery (BSBR) program, grants ranging from $20,000 to $10 million are available for projects in local government areas which were disaster-declared for the 2019-20 bushfires.

Community groups, businesses and councils can apply.

From feedback received through our Recovery Support Officers, we know lockdowns due to the pandemic have created difficulties for people preparing applications.

For this reason, we have extended the closing date to 5pm AEST on Wednesday, 6 October 2021.

The notional funding amounts identified against each LGA in the grant guidelines are just a guide – they are not a set allocation.

We aim to fund projects across all 110 eligible LGAs, based on projects received, demonstrated need and project merit.

The total amount of grant funding awarded to projects in each LGA may be higher or lower than these indicative amounts.

Support for applicants continues to be available via online workshops, as well as short videos and answers to Frequently Asked Questions on our website: recovery.gov.au/blacksummer-grants. Applicants are also encouraged to call the Business Grants Hub call centre with any questions, which is open from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday: Call 13 28 46.

This $280 million grants program builds on the $2.4 billion the Australian Government has to date provided to help communities impacted by these devastating bushfires.

Nationally, this includes over 27,000 grants and loans to small businesses and primary producers, over 4,900 properties cleared of debris, increased battery-back up to mobile phone towers across regional and remote Australia, and over 3,200 payments to emergency volunteers.

Isn't it interesting that in a pandemic it is not the politicians or the academics or the fashion designers that we miss.

1. ON 11/9/21 at about 9am Police arrested a 35-year-old man at a Bowraville address in relation to a domestic violence incident involving a 39-year-old woman.

The accused man was charged at Macksville Police Station for damaging property and is currently on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 23/9/21.

2. On 10/9/21 at about 9pm Police arrested a 27-year-old man at a Macksville address for breaching an AVO during a domestic violence incident.

Due to the accused man’s level of intoxication he was conveyed to Kempsey Police Station where he was charged.

The devastating blazes of 2019 and 2020 which swept across Australia are the motive behind this star-studded six-part anthology series. Co-creator/ executive producer Tony Ayres (Glitch) wanted to tell the real stories of the people affected “so that we never forget what they went through and always remember our responsibility for change.” In tonight’s premiere, volunteer firefighters Tash (Eliza Scanlen) and Mott (Hunter Page-Lochard, pictured with Scanlen) nearly lose their lives, but form a bond. Top notch.

Darkly comic and boasting a plethora of deeply dysfunctional relationships, Frayed was a hit when it premiered in 2019. Fans were anxious if the ’80s-set dramedy from Aussie-born, London-living stand-up comedian Sarah Kendall (pictured) would ever return: viewers were left hanging by a thread in the season finale when Sammy Cooper (Kendall) discovered she had been misled out of her dead, cheating husband’s fortune by his smooth-talking lawyer Rufus (Robert Webb). In tonight’s return, Sammy is back in London on mission, but money is still scarce.

Back in Australia, the police are watching the Cooper family over the missing person case.

It’s a quirky, comical treat.

Patrols from Minni Water to Nambucca Heads got underway last Saturday, 18 September.

More than 2200 local volunteer surf lifesavers have been enlisted to help protect North Coast beachgoers this summer.

Michael Coulter, Patrol Captain, Macksville Scotts Head Surf Life Saving Club said, “Our Patrols are made up of six volunteers, patrolling Little Beach from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm Saturday and Sunday.”

When News Of The Area caught up with the Scotts Head Little Bay Patrol on Sunday, they had already attended an on beach medical emergency.

“A man who was having trouble breathing was administered with medical oxygen.

“After a while he had recovered enough to make his own way home, with a medical follow-up,” said Mr Coulter.
