This will operate every Tuesday during Term 4, with the first session to be held on Tuesday 26 October, 3:30-4:30pm.

The program is open for ages 12-25, and there is no need to book, as walk-ins are welcome.

All art supplies are provided, as is some delicious afternoon tea.

Millie Shapiro, Youth Worker for GenHealth said, “GenHealth is a new program working at the Youthie.

“This is a service providing mental health support and resources for mental wellbeing, aiming to promote a healthy lifestyle.”

New Art Groups for Youth at the Nambucca Heads Youth Centre Harbour, with a new outreach service being offered at the Youthie.

When asked about the aim of the Art Group, Ms Shapiro told News Of The Area, “Our project lead Miranda Cull is an art therapist.

“There will be lots of art materials available at each session, and everyone will be able to use the materials to create what they want.

“We plan on having some proper art lessons as well, and at a later stage will get the group to work together on a large mural to hang at the Youthie.

“We are making a place where young people can just hang out in a safe supportive space.”

Ms Shapiro said there is a long term vision in place for the community space.

“The aim is to make the Youthie a

place where youth in the community can come along and get together.

“We would like to see youth feeling comfortable just dropping into the Youthie.”

GenHealth operates at the Youthie Monday and Tuesday, but the centre is open five days a week.

Watch this space, as a new group will also be organised for Monday with a different focus.

STROKE Foundation’s annual physical activity fundraising campaign, Stride4Stroke, is less than two weeks away, starting on Monday November 1.

Hundreds of people across Australia have signed up to take part so far.

Local community members can join them by registering now at www. stride4stroke.org.au

Participants simply choose their own activity goal to complete within the month.

It could be anything from walking, swimming, push ups or online yoga classes.

Their aim is to increase their daily ‘moving minutes’ to reduce their risk of stroke.

Moving minutes can be tracked on the Stride4Stroke website to keep ‘striders’ motivated.

By Emma DARBIN THE Australian Government has cracked down on nicotine vaping and e-cigarettes with new laws introduced mandating that these products can now only be obtained through a doctor’s prescription.

As of 1 October 2021, you can no longer legally buy nicotine vaping products, such as nicotine e-cigarettes, nicotine pods and liquid nicotine (also known as eJuice, vape juice, eLiquid) from overseas websites, as well as locally, without first getting a valid doctor’s prescription.

This means pharmacists in community pharmacies can supply e-liquids and e-cigarettes (containing nicotine) to their customers (18 years and over) if they have a valid prescription from a doctor.

Products not captured by the changes include nicotine replacement therapies such as sprays, patches, lozenges, chews and gums, and vaping products that do not contain nicotine.

It is illegal for any other Australian retailers, including vape stores, and online and overseas sellers to sell nicotine vaping products, with vape stores and other retailers only able to sell flavours and non-nicotine vaping products or devices.

Nicotine vaping products contain nicotine salt or base in solution and are heated using a vaping device to make aerosol for inhalation (vaping).

The Federal Government has introduced the new laws due to the significant increase in the use of nicotine vaping products by young Australians.

Between 2015 and 2019, e-cigarette use by young people increased by a massive 96 per cent in Australia.

The Government said the changes strike a balance between the need to prevent young people from taking up nicotine vaping products while allowing current smokers to access these products for smoking cessation on their doctor's

advice.

There are currently no approved nicotine vaping products on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG).

Therefore, doctors will either need to apply to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for

access to the unapproved product before they allocate a prescription, or provide a script for a three month (or less) supply of nicotine vaping products if a user intends to use the Personal Importation Scheme to buy the products from an overseas website.

Vandals target tyres at Swimming Creek

A CONCERNED community member has contacted News Of The Area to notify locals that tyres have been slashed on motor vehicles and a caravan at Swimming Creek.

The incident occurred on the night of Tuesday 12 October, at Reed St and Bemago St. In total five vehicles had tyres slashed.

Of these, according to reports, two were SUV vehicles, two were utes, and one was a caravan.

All vehicles had one

tyre slashed, apart from the caravan, which reportedly had two tyres slashed.

This is an expensive case of vandalism, said local community member Ian, who had one tyre slashed.

Ian came out to start his vehicle Wednesday morning to find that his tyre had been slashed.

He then counted the other vehicles in the street that had suffered the same vandalism.

According to Ian, “Nothing happened like this before in the area.

“I had a vehicle stolen 10 years ago and there have

been a couple of break-ins to vehicles over the years.

“I heard that a car was broken into the other night at Valla.”

Ian has reported the incident to the local police.

“I’m upset about it.

“It is costing money.

“As if times aren’t hard enough with COVID, fires, and the floods.”

With one of the vehicles vandalised being a caravan, Ian is concerned that if this type of vandalism continues, visitors will be reluctant to come and stay here.

The area that the incident occurred in is a quiet location, said Ian, with a predominantly semi-retired community living there.

FOR many of us the past week has been a constant series of scanning a businesses’ QR code, signing into a venue with the Services NSW App, before switching onto the Medicare App to show our vaccination status.

Now we can do this all in one step.

Minister for Digital and Customer Service Victor Dominello said with restrictions to further ease as the state approaches 80 percent double vaccination, the integration of the vaccine certificate with the app will make things easier for the people of NSW. “This is an extra digital service to make life easier for the businesses and customers of NSW as we open back up.

NSW is the first jurisdiction in Australia to roll out an integrated QR code solution for displaying vaccination status State wide,” Mr Dominello said.

“When someone visits a venue, they’ll be able to show their green check-in tick and vaccination status simultaneously, saving staff and customers time.

“While integrating the COVID-19 digital certificate onto the Service NSW app will be optional, it will be by far the easiest and quickest way to prove you’re fully vaccinated.”

The State-wide roll out follows a successful regional pilot with clubs, agedcare facilities and taxis in Port Macquarie, Tamworth, Wagga Wagga and Lismore, as well as internal government participants.

As the vaccine data sits in the Federal Australian Immunisation Register to integrate the COVID-19 digital certificate into the Service NSW app you will need to: ensure your Federal MyGov account is linked to Medicare; download the Express Plus Medicare app and sign in with your MyGov account details; select ‘Proof of vaccinations’ and then ‘View history’; the elect ‘Share with check in app’ and then ‘Service NSW’.

The whole process takes just a couple of minutes and will certainly simplify things as it will mean one less complication on check in.

“I would like to thank the Federal Government, in particular Minister Stuart Robert, for his support and collaboration in making this happen and sharing the data at the end of last month,” Mr Dominello said.

Customers can use the Express Plus Medicare app or the digital wallet on their phone.

Customers without a smartphone can print a vaccination certificate from their Medicare account or contact Services Australia for a paper certificate in order to prove their vaccination status.

of Liquor and Policing at the Australian Hotels Association NSW, said venue operators were reporting the vaccination status combined with the QR check-in made it easier to check and validate.

“Businesses are trying hard to meet the rules and if we can help them by eliminating a step it is a good thing!

“The convenience of having a customer’s vaccination status presented alongside their check-in will

allow for a seamless entry and take pressure off venue staff,” Mr Green said.

“It certainly makes the process quicker.”

The Service NSW app will include a number of security measures to help compliance officers and businesses with checking and validating a customer’s vaccination status, including a NSW Waratah logo hologram and rotating QR codes, similar to the Digital Driver Licence.

The Apron - A Story That Needed Telling "People approach me with song ideas pretty regularly, but usually there’s not enough depth in the idea to warrant a whole song.

“When Vicki started telling me her story, I realised that there was a lot of scope in her idea.

“She sent me a bunch of notes and ideas she had for the song and I wrote the lyrics and music to ‘The Apron’ over a week.

“I called her back the following week and played the song to her over the phone.

“Safe to say there wasn’t a dry eye down the line," said Angus.

ARIA and three-time Golden Guitar nominee Angus Gill has teamed up with 2NVR Nambucca Radio presenter Vickiree Melouney to write a touching song about Vickiree’s grandmother entitled ‘The Apron’.

The story is about Vickiree’s great grandmother Mabel, who was known for wearing an apron from dawn till dusk.

Presentation Day at Nambucca Valley Bridge Club

By Karen GRIBBIN THE Nambucca Valley Bridge Club (NVBC) held a Presentation Day on Tuesday 12 October for players undertaking the club’s ‘Learn to Play Bridge Program’.

Back in July, News Of The Area spoke with Program Presenter John Slade and Club President Leonie Harrison about the $2000

grant obtained by the club to instruct people in the art of playing Bridge.

The program started with 24 participants, with 14 graduating the program.

Starting on 10 August, the program was postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions until 14 September when players resumed face-to-face learning.

“I’m very pleased with the number of graduates considering we were put into lockdown at the start of the program,” said John Slade.

During the lockdown period, Program Presenters John Slade and Mike Siford

kept participants engaged with the process by virtually providing game plans, information and quizzes to students until they could sit back down at the card tables again.

Mike Siford said, “Graduates received vouchers for the following six club games, and 12 months free membership.”

John Slade conducted the Wednesday evening groups, while Mike Siford catered to the Tuesday group.

Mike has 12 years of Bridge training experience in both Coffs Harbour and the

Nambucca Valley.

“This current group of students have been a pleasurable, polite and funloving group to teach.

“With more experience they will be very good Bridge players,” said Mike.

Edmund Yong, Michael Paxton, Julianne Cowles, Dominique Wallace, Doris Peters, Audrey Pocock, and Lyndall Edsall were the Program Graduates on Presentation Day. Graduating student Doris Peters said, “Learning to play Bridge has shown me an opportunity to find something challenging and entertaining, plus the chance to meet new people.”

LIVE gigs returned to 2NVR Nambucca Valley Radio last Friday as restrictions continue to ease and musos return to the stage.

Kailey Pallas wowed the live studio audience and 105.9fm listeners with original songs and a range of classics from the likes of

Scholarships for the Regional Conservatorium’s music programs officially open SCHOLARSHIPS for the Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium’s music programs in 2022 are officially open, with a new scholarship on offer, specifically for classical music students in the Nambucca Valley region.

Applications are invited from students who are looking to continue their musical journey, and students from across the region are encouraged to apply, including those not currently at the Conservatorium.

Scholarships on offer are for school-aged students who either sing or play instruments in contemporary, classical, or jazz genres.

Winning applicants will receive up to forty 45-minute single study lessons working alongside some of Australia’s finest educators and performers.

For those on applicable instruments, winners also gain free ensemble entry.

NSW Crimestoppers: 'Just Hang Up' ALMOST 90% of Australians have received at least one nuisance or unwanted call every week and a further 10% receiving more than ten nuisance or unwanted calls each week, according to a recent consumer survey undertaken by Crime Stoppers (NSW).

Scam activity has a significant social and economic impact on Australians.

The Australian Competition and Consumer

Commission’s Scamwatch, reports phone calls continue to be the most common way scammers reach consumers with financial losses of $66.8 million reported to Scamwatch between 1 January to 3 October 2021 from 120,279 reports.

This represents a 104% increase in losses and an 87% increase in reports.

Scammers are finding new ways to trick people into taking their calls.

For example, Caller ID

spoofing is one such tactic which allows the scammer to disguise their identity. If the scammer is calling from outside Australia, they can actually display an Australian phone number, including a mobile number, which increases the likelihood of you answering their call.

The impact on people’s productivity is enormous.

It’s a nuisance and extremely disruptive.

Some people are even

receiving calls from their own phone number, while other people’s valid phone numbers are being reported as a phone scam because it has been used by criminals.

If your phone number has been stolen and used in a phone scam, contact your telco provider immediately.

There is no one single solution to avoid scams and blocking individual phone numbers is one solution but it only stops calls from that specific number.

NSW Crime Stoppers has launched a new campaign to help the community minimise the risk of falling victim to phone scams.

“The questions may seem harmless, but they build a picture of you, where your finances are, your financial situation and other personal details that allow them to impersonate you and extract money.

“Hanging up may be the difference between being scammed or not,” added Mr Price.

Crime Stoppers’ message to the community is simple: Just Hang Up. Reputable organisations like financial institutions and the ATO will never ask you for passwords or for access to your computer.

What to do: If there is a distinct delay when you pick up the phone and the person does not announce who they are before starting the conversation, just hang up.

If someone asks for your personal information, just hang up.

The survey found that of those who receive unwanted or nuisance calls, more than 68% have been asked for credit card or payment details or asked for access to their computer.

More than half the people surveyed engaged with the nuisance call before eventually hanging up and in 5% of the cases, people have given out their personal information, credit card or payment details or access to their computer.

The best advice Crime Stoppers can give to consumers is just hang up, then check if the call is legitimate by calling the organisation they claim to be from using contact details you’ve sourced independently, like a Google search.

Never use the contact details associated with the call.

Never give out any personal information and if you are concerned you may have been scammed, let your bank know if you’ve given away any banking details and report the scam to Scamwatch.

The not for profit, ID Care, can help you if you have given away personal information.

Importantly, share your knowledge with family and friends if you are aware of a scam.

Awareness can help others avoid becoming a victim to scams.

The number of people being scammed, and the amount of financial loss is continuing to rise.

NSW Crime Stoppers wants to help the community reduce these numbers and protect people’s hard-earned money from criminals.

THE Paying It Forward Seniors Christmas Gifting project has had its second packing day with more than two hundred gifts wrapped and tagged.

The initiative is an idea brought to fruition by Coffs Harbour local, Margaret Schumacher.

“In July Mrs Claus Coffs Coast (me) was talking to a man who cares for the elderly in our community, and he mentioned that some of the elderly don't receive Christmas gifts,” Margaret told News Of The Area.

“From that small conversation an idea grew… the Paying it Forward Seniors Christmas Gifting.”

The first Facebook post asking for donations of new gifts for senior males and females received a very positive response.

“We received messages and phone calls asking what was needed.

“Members offered to design and craft gift tags, gift wrapping paper was donated, labels for gifts were designed.

“Another member offered to

make Worry Worms and my husband made 200 Believe Bells.

“Another member eagerly offered to make Christmas masks.”

Members donated wool and Christmas material.

The gifts were purchased with love, said Margaret, “with thoughts of grandparents, parents and elderly friends that were no longer with us”.

In just over six weeks the Schumacher’s spare room was overtaken by bags and boxes of gifts.

A decision was made to commence packing early and close off the donation date earlier than anticipated.

Round One Packing Day arrived.

“In three-and-a-half hours we wrapped, tagged and boxed 110 gifts.

“There will be a rich program with something for everyone, with over 70 guest speakers and a range of interactive activities to keep everyone engaged and interested, including speed networking, an exhibition hall, round table discussions, and even a generational debate between Baby Boomers and Millennials.”

CHRISTMAS is coming early for people with a passion for business in the Nambucca Valley, with tickets for this year’s Mid North Coast Ignite Symposium being offered totally free thanks to Regional Development Australia Mid North Coast (RDAMNC).

Nambucca Youthie open for fun Wednesday afternoons

By Rachel MCGREGOR-ALLEN EVERY Wednesday afternoon from 3:30-5pm during Term 4, the Nambucca Youthie will be open for youth from the Valley to join in the fun, socialise and potentially make new friends.

There will be a variety of entertaining activities for everyone to engage with, or, as young people do, to hang out in a cool space to talk about life.

Deidre Bear, longstanding Board member, said, “There will be games such as table tennis, Jenga or board games.

“Even Scrabble if anyone

wants.

“Art and craft activities, for example painting rocks, jewellery making, cooking.”

Staff at the Youthie want attendees to let them know what they want to do, and staff will do their best to make it happen.

“Pre-Covid we had young ones who chose to do sushi the next week…unfortunately the next week didn’t happen.”

Now that Covid restrictions have eased, it is now possible for youth to join the program again.

There is always adequate supervision for the afternoon, and Ms Bear told News Of The Area that parents are welcome to drop in if they would like to see the space.

CUSTOMERS will have more reasons to celebrate catching up with friends and family this summer with two additional Dine & Discover vouchers up for grabs for NSW residents.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the expanded program will support residents across the State and encourage economic activity as part of the government’s economic recovery strategy.

“From Byron to Bega and Bellingen to Broken Hill, this is about supporting people to get out and have a meal or spend the day discovering their city while supporting businesses across NSW,” Mr Perrottet said.

Treasurer Matt Kean said the additional $250 million investment by the NSW Government would help businesses recover from

months of restrictions and encourage people to enjoy what they love most.

“We experienced the success of the Dine & Discover program when we reopened last time, which is why we are doubling down efforts with an additional two $25 vouchers - one for Dine and one for Discover venues,” Mr Kean said.

“We are backing our businesses and helping hip pockets by expanding the program, in addition to extending existing vouchers until the end of June 2022.”

Minister for Digital and Customer Service Victor Dominello said the vouchers would again be delivered via the ServiceNSW app.

“You’ll find them in your ServiceNSW app in time for Summer or you can contact ServiceNSW and they can send

them to you,” Mr Dominello said.

“To date, almost 4.8 million people have taken advantage of the voucher program since its launch in March, giving businesses a $430 million boost.”

NSW residents aged 18 years and over who are yet to apply will be able to do so until the program ends and will receive all six $25 vouchers.

Participating businesses do not need to reapply.

Those who want to join the program are encouraged to register, download the scanner app and get ready to redeem.

More information will be made available in the coming weeks on the nsw.gov.au website.

Hospitality, music and art sector targeted by Alfresco Restart Package A $66 MILLION Alfresco Restart Package has been launched by the NSW Government to support businesses and communities recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.

NSW Treasurer Matt Kean said, “Alfresco dining is not only a great way to dine, it’s a safe way to socialise as we open up.

“That’s why we are supporting new outdoor entertainment and dining precincts to pop up right across the state through our $66 million Alfresco Restart initiative,” Mr Kean said.

Minister for Digital and Customer Service Victor Dominello said it is “time to enjoy a meal or drink in the sunshine and the NSW Government is committed to helping businesses do that in time for summer”.

“We’re providing 5,000

hospitality businesses a $5,000 grant to get their outdoor dining venture off the ground - whether that’s to help set-up curb-side dining or a pub-style courtyard, we’re here to turn their ideas into reality.”

The NSW Government is doing all it can to revive the hospitality and entertainment industries, while ensuring people can safely socialise in the sunshine.

Nambucca Valley is the perfect space for hospitality businesses to set up, if they have not already, alfresco dining.

Local businesses have felt the impact of lockdowns and fewer tourists driving into town.

This grant is a welcome addition to the various supports that the NSW Government is providing to help revive the State’s economy.

THE Coalition Government is supporting the return of live music, and Pat Conaghan Federal Member for Cowper has worked to ensure that Cowper is receiving its fair share of the more than $2.5 million in Federal funding, as part of round three of the Live Music Australia program.

Mr Conaghan said the program will bring more original live Australian music to communities across the country – and more specifically, across

the Mid North Coast.

“This funding will help the live music sector to re-emerge as Australians continue to get vaccinated and COVID-19 restrictions ease, allowing venues to begin to reopen and rebuild,” Mr Conaghan said.

“It is important that our live music sector will be primed to host performances and gigs when permitted to do so, and by supporting these local venues now, we are increasing opportunities to see Australian

artists get back on stage.”

“I’m pleased to announce that two impressive local businesses have received a total of $59,470 through round three of the Live Music Australia Program,” Mr Conaghan said.

“The first is John Logan Entertainment who received $8,431 to go towards the purchase of an upgraded PA system to encourage more opportunities for live music across 10 regional venues in NSW. “The second is Bucket Brewery who received $51,039 for the construction of an outdoor stage

NSW reaches 80% double dose vaccination rate WITH 80 percent of NSW’s eligible population now fully vaccinated against Covid-19, new Reopening NSW Roadmap’s 80 per cent settings came into effect on Monday for those who are fully vaccinated.

Community sport can resume, more friends and family will be reunited, and there will no longer be a cap on guests at weddings and funerals.

Masks will also no longer be required in offices, and drinking while standing and dancing will be permitted indoors and outdoors at hospitality venues.

From 1 November bookings for hospitality venues will no longer be capped.

Also from 1 November, the NSW Government will remove quarantine requirements and caps for overseas arrivals who the Commonwealth Government recognises as fully vaccinated with a TGAapproved vaccine, helping

Australians stranded abroad get home before the end of the year.

Further advice about testing requirements for arrivals will be provided in the coming days.

Fully vaccinated travellers already in quarantine will also complete their quarantine requirements on November 1, even if it is less than 14-days.

Overseas arrivals who are not fully vaccinated will be capped at 210 people per week, and will be required to undergo mandatory 14-days hotel quarantine.

Travel between Greater Sydney (including the Blue Mountains, Wollongong, Shellharbour and the Central Coast) and Regional NSW will also be permitted from 1 November, to allow people in the regions more time to receive their second vaccine.

To support regional businesses likely to be impacted by this change the NSW Government will defer the second taper of

the JobSaver program until October 31.

Eligible regional businesses will receive 30 percent of weekly payroll, before tapering payments to the scheduled 15 percent from November 1.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the easing of restrictions and return of overseas travellers would help reunite families and be a significant boost for the economy.

“We have reached this vaccination milestone quicker than anyone thought we could, and that is a testament to the hard work of people across the State turning out to get vaccinated,” Mr Perrottet said.

“Welcoming back fully vaccinated travellers will not only mean families and friends can be home in time for Christmas, it will also give our economy a major boost.”

“We are opening up locally and we are opening up to the world.

“Now is a time for people to come together in a safe way whether it be returning home from overseas or enjoying your favourite local venue,” Mr Ayres said.

All premises continue to operate at one person per 4sqm indoors and one person per 2sqm outdoors.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the NSW community had done an extraordinary job to reach the 80 percent double dose vaccination target and was leading Australia out of the pandemic.

“The people of NSW have pulled together to achieve this fantastic outcome and bring us closer to life as we knew it before the pandemic,

but we’re not there yet,” Mr Hazzard said.

“We can’t forget that COVID is still circulating amongst us in NSW and we need to keep getting vaccinated to push the double dose rates even higher.

“We want to get as close to 100 per cent double vaccination as possible to keep everyone safe.”

NSW residents will still need to comply with COVIDSafe check-ins and provide proof of vaccination to staff in most settings.

More restrictions will be relaxed on 1 December, as previously announced in the Reopening NSW Roadmap.

HOW often have you seen a dead bat (flying-fox) hanging on power lines, or caught in a barbed wire fence or fruit tree netting?

Few people realise that there could be a live baby still with its deceased mother.

From late September to late February, mother flying foxes carry their newborn pups with them, and if something happens to the mother the little ones face a slow death from starvation and dehydration.

The Mid North Coast Branch of WIRES (Wildlife Information, Rescue and

Education Service) is asking the public to please report flying-foxes in trouble to them as quickly as possible even if the mother bat seems dead.

Power lines are a particular hazard for bats, but quick thinking and reporting to WIRES can often save the pup.

Essential Energy emergency personnel are called in to release the bat from the lines, and surviving pups are then taken into care by trained and appropriately vaccinated (against Lyssavirus etc) WIRES members.

“We don’t really know how the pups survive their mother’s electrocution, but somehow they often do,” said local WIRES Bat Team

member Jenny Beatson.

“They can be saved if we are called in early enough to take them into care and handraise the pups until they are old enough for rehabilitation and release back to the wild.

“We’re very grateful to the Essential Energy teams, who respond as quickly as possible to release the bat from the lines.”

There are several species of flying-fox in the area, including the threatened Grey-headed flying-fox, and the Mid North Coast Branch of WIRES has a team of dedicated volunteers who are specially trained to care for them.

“The public can really help by calling us in as soon as they spot a bat on power lines or otherwise in trouble,”

said Jenny.

“That’s all you need to do, please don’t touch or handle the bat in any way.

“Although very few bats carry Lyssavirus and it can

only be contracted through a bite or scratch from an infected animal, it’s a very real risk that can be avoided by not touching the animal, and never try to remove a bat

from power lines or you risk electrocution yourself.

“Just call it in and we’ll do the rest.”

SCIENTISTS at CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, have uncovered a new type of Hendra virus in flying foxes, confirming the virus can be found across a broad region of the country.

A paper detailing the findings has been published just days after the new genetic type (HeV-g2) was detected in a horse near Newcastle in New South Wales, the most southern case of Hendra yet recorded.

Hendra virus can be transmitted from flying foxes to horses, and from horses to people.

Previous studies had found the virus in flying foxes

in Queensland and parts of New South Wales.

After monitoring flying fox samples from 20132021, researchers at CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) found the new genetic type in flying foxes in Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia. ACDP is a World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reference laboratory for Hendra and Nipah virus diseases.

Reference expert and CSIRO scientist Dr Kim Halpin said spillover of the disease from flying foxes to horses has still only been reported in Queensland and New South Wales.

“However, because Hendra Virus Genotype 2 is

so genetically similar to the original Hendra virus, there is a potential risk to horses wherever flying foxes are found in Australia,” Dr Halpin said.

“It’s important to note that Hendra has never been reported to spread directly from flying foxes to humans – it’s always been transmitted from infected horses to humans.

“We expect this new genetic type would behave the same way.

"And given the similarities, while more research is needed, we expect the existing Hendra virus vaccine for horses should work against this new type too.

“This finding really underscores the importance

of research into flying foxes – it's crucial to helping us understand and protect Australians against the viruses they can carry.”

Another project, called ‘Horses as Sentinels, led by the University of Sydney and CSIRO and funded by a Biosecurity Innovation Program grant from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, detected the same genetic type earlier this year in samples collected from a horse from Queensland in 2015.

Dr Steve Dennis, President of Equine Veterinarians Australia, said the findings are a reminder there’s a risk of Hendra virus wherever there are flying foxes and horses.

“Owners and any people

who interact with horses can reduce the risk of infection from Hendra virus and other zoonotic viruses through vaccination of horses or humans where available, wearing appropriate PPE, and seeking veterinary attention for sick horses,” Dr Dennis said.

CSIRO and the ‘Horses as

Sentinels’ project team have been working closely with vets and laboratories around Australia to implement improved tests for horses with signs of Hendra virus disease.

Nambucca Valley Police News 1. ON 13/10/21 Police arrested a 14-year-old male youth following enquiries related to an assault that occurred earlier the same date at a school in Nambucca Heads.

It is alleged that the young person entered a classroom and assaulted a 16-yearold male student who sustained a minor head injury.

In 2008, Brian passed away and left his whole estate to his wife, Julie.

Julie then moved in with her son, Paul and he and his family provided her with care.

Kathryn married Nick and they tried for several years to have children before undertaking IVF. Julie was hopeful that the IVF program would provide her with more grandchildren.

In recognition of Paul’s care and support, Julie updates her will to include a gift of $100,000 to Paul.

She leaves the rest of her estate to all of her children equally and if any of those children died before her, there is a provision to the effect that that child’s share goes to their “children”.

Unfortunately, in 2016 Kathryn is diagnosed with an aggressive cancer and sadly, passes away 6 months later.

It was Kathryn’s wish for Nick to use their frozen embryos and a year later, Nick begins the process of finding a surrogate mother.

Julie remains in close contact with Nick and is supportive of his decision.

Unfortunately, Julie passes away shortly before Nick receives the news that the IVF process has been a success.

Nick seeks legal advice regarding his child’s entitlement under Julie’s will and decides to seek a declaration from the Court that his child is entitled to Kathryn’s share.

The Court decides that as Julie was aware that Kathryn and Nick had frozen embryos, Julie had the ability to make provision for those “unborn children” in her will, but because she did not do so, and there was no “period of gestation in the uterus” at the time of Julie’s death, Nick’s child was not entitled to a share of the estate.

YOUR front page (Climate Questions, NOTA, p1 October 15 Edition) revealed Federal parliamentarian Pat Conaghan’s attitude to climate change.

Ten out of ten for two contrary opinions Mr Conaghan.

A summary!

He does believe in climate change, but thinks we shouldn’t do anything about it.

This shows the mindset of a diehard sceptic.

Action and remediation, can be denied by assuming a moral position.

His argument?

Action would affect the poor.

The coal and gas lobbies shed tears for the wretched of the earth.

It’s reflected in the election funds they give to political parties.

Is Mr Conaghan aware of Coffs Harbour’s fate if there’s inaction?

The town barely sits above sea level.

Over the last thirty years, to the surprise of long term locals, Coffs Harbour’s inundations have pointed to the future and the future is here.

Shake up your response Mr Conaghan.

Electric Vehicles DEAR News Of The Area, THE powers that be seem to be pushing very hard for us all to go to electric vehicles (EV), these are my feelings and observations on the subject.

A recent NRMA Open Road story about travelling from Sydney to Hobart in an EV showed the problems with driving an EV any distance.

There are the problems of finding a charger, having it available (it will get harder when there are more EV's on the road), and also having it working.

You would have to allow

a lot more time for the trip, including waiting time for a charger if you can find one and it's available.

Around the cities, they might be okay, but for people like us, living in the regional areas and remote towns, they would be useless.

Another problem would be, if there were more EV's, there would be a lot more strain on an already stretched electrical system, in some states more than others.

Another big disadvantage is initially the cost, then the devaluation, especially as they get closer to the magic ten years when the batteries

will need replacing, who can afford to buy the vehicle in the first place then have to pay out over $10,000 for a new set of batteries?

You also have the problem of disposing of the old batteries.

You would also have the problem of getting less distance out of the vehicle as the batteries age.

In my opinion, the powers that be should be pushing Hybrid vehicles.

They don't use as much fuel as a conventional vehicle plus they have the advantage of using electricity that is recharged by the vehicle itself.

International Day of Action on Big Biomass DEAR News Of The Area,

THE International Day of Action on Big Biomass was held this week on Thursday 21 October.

Conservationists from around the globe highlighted the need to stop this industry at a time when we have reached a ‘Climate Code Red’ emergency.

The biofuel industry has been disastrous overseas and has had a huge impact on biodiversity, water and soil resources.

Massive areas of rainforest in Asia have been destroyed for palm oil plantations (more than 50% of palm oil is now used for biofuel in Europe) and vast areas of moist forest in south-eastern America have been clear felled.

According to the Bob Brown Foundation, “Forest biomass releases even more carbon than coal and is just another excuse for propping up the destructive and economically

senseless logging industry.”

The ‘North East Forest Alliance’ has determined that 140,000 hectares from Taree to Grafton is earmarked for clear-felling to provide biomass fuel for this industry. Action taken by the Forestry Corporation and the Department of Primary Industries to develop this industry is fully supported by the NSW National Party, according to Michael Jones from the ‘Forest Ecology Alliance’.

The claim that only timber waste will be used is incorrect.

There’s no shortage of moving parts in this faithful, family-friendly adaptation of Hugh Lofting’s classic Doctor Dolittle stories. Taking place in 19th-century England, it’s all about Welsh veterinarian Dr John Dolittle (Robert Downey Jr, pictured), who lives in solitude after the death of his wife Lily. John’s only companionship comes from a menagerie of exotic animals that he speaks to on a daily basis. It’s an all-star adventure that features the voice of Emma Thompson as Poly the macaw, Dolittle’s most trusted advisor.

Putting yourself out there to find love is hard work, but even with cameras following her every move, bachelorette Brooke Blurton (pictured) is not to be dissuaded. This seventh season of The Bachelorette Australia is her third appearance in the franchise and she’s hoping for better luck this time around. This season marks two milestones for the franchise as Brooke is the first Indigenous contestant and also the first bisexual Bachelorette searching for love among a group of eligible male and female suitors. In a recent interview she declared she has in fact found true love on the show.

Ambrose Action at Macksville!

SATURDAY’S Ambrose golf event at Macksville Country Golf Club was sponsored by Binalong Clothing's Amy Urquhart, and despite COVID restrictions, 84 turned up to show their skills (or lack thereof).

Amy's dad Gary (better known as Mingo), now retired, has been a generous sponsor of this event for many years. This is a game where a bad shot can be rescued by a playing partner, which results in some good scores.

For example, despite sore shoulders from carrying his partners, Matt Ward twice made the par five seventh green in two.

Rain washed out ladies' golf on Tuesday, but the Saturday golfers owe a special thanks to Carmel Freudenstein for her voluntary work in the bar when other staff were unavailable because of personal commitments and COVID restrictions.
