High Street development decision deferred by Council Karen GRIBBIN

THE Nambucca Valley Council decision on the future of a development at 3 High Street, Nambucca Heads has been deferred for further assessment of residents’ view loss, and legal advice regarding the sale of a road reserve.

Development Application (DA) 2023/015 seeks approval for the demolition of an existing dwelling and the construction of a residential flat building at 3 High Street.

Councillors attended an on-site inspection prior to the Nambucca Valley Council meeting on December 14, allowing them to consider real-time view loss, and the potential impacts of this development on neighbouring residents and the surrounding area.

Neighbouring residents claim that the independent assessor employed to assess the development failed to consider any viewsharing losses from the perspective of impacted residents.

“The assessor relied totally on drawings supplied by Casa Koala (the developer),” said Mr David Pleasance, a resident of High Street who spoke at the recent Council meeting.

“He at no time assessed the view loss from my apartment.

“In my opinion, the assessor failed miserably in this department,” Mr Pleasance said.

“This development will sit fifteen metres above 1 Hill Street, with an array of windows and balconies looking directly into that property.”

Nambucca Valley Councillor Troy Vance was disappointed that the assessor, Matthew Hutchings of Utopia Planning, had not engaged with residents to assess the viewing loss from

Mr Smyth, a town planning consultant from Coffs Harbour, spoke in favour of the application at the December 14 meeting.

During the meeting Councillor Jones asked Mr Smyth: “How difficult would it be to build this development without the land acquisition?”.

Mr Smyth answered, “I’ve not assessed the development in itself, I was asked to make sure nothing was missed procedurally.

“To answer your question, no, I’ve not assessed the application.”

A motion was put forward that Council’s report be deferred until the independent consultant attends onsite and completes a view impact assessment.

The motion also stated that Council will engage a legal firm recommended by staff to provide a second opinion on the legal status and ownership of the road known as Lot 1 DP 1288566.

The motion was moved and seconded by Councillors Angel and Vance and carried unanimously.

Another neighbouring resident, Bernie Perkins, said, “I don’t believe that this DA has been properly assessed.

“Casa Koala Pty Ltd has simply shaved off a small corner of the building to meet objections from 47 Ridge Street.

“He’s done this by using the road reserve, of which the sale of the same is still a contentious issue, and has not been resolved.”

According to Mr Perkins, the development doesn’t comply with the area’s Development Control Plan or Local Environment Plan, the same regulations that buildings directly adjacent to 3 High Street were made to adhere to before obtaining building approval.

Mr Perkins suggested that Casa Koala Pty Ltd is still in breach of the Council resolution of May 25 ‘that it be shown that the building can be built on lot 2 without

their apartments.

“I can see discrepancies on those units which have been put forward by the architect, and at the moment I’m not fully satisfied that the views that they (High Street residents) are going to lose are actually demonstrated in the photo,” said Councillor Vance.

“I’m not sure about the other Councillors, but I’d like to defer it for more accurate information.”

Councillor James Angel concurred with Councillor Vance’s suggestion to defer any decision.

“The simple fact of photos from Utopia and lines drawn, and what has been said to residents in the past, we need to be clear cut with this decision,” said Councillor Angel.

Councillor David Jones then wanted an amendment to the motion put forward to ask for further legal advice on the land acquisition.

The development at 3 High Street has been a contentious issue for the Council since its inception, and Mayor Rhonda Hoban agreed with comments from the gallery that the threat

Bowraville LALC commence development of renewable energy project Apple Creek Green Energy Project (BBGEP) will be based at Burrapine and aims to achieve sustainable long term social, economic, and environmental benefits, including job creation for the local community in line with ‘closing the gap’ targets.

It is anticipated that BBGEP would consist of two sub-projects.

The main project involves the development of a utility scale solar panel farm.

The second aspect is a battery energy supplementation project for a 26 household Indigenous mission settlement at Bowraville.

BBGEP is the collaboration effort between Bowraville LALC and Red Yellow Black Green Energy, an Indigenous-owned entity set up to assist Australian Indigenous land owners to obtain maximum socio-economic benefits as well as culturally appropriate environmental

Bowraville Festival celebrates community spirit

By Ned COWIE RAIN before the parade could be seen as a poor omen for some, but for a thirsty rural town like Bowraville preparing for its Christmas festival, it had entirely the opposite effect.

The small town came out ‘en masse’ on Friday, 15 December and enjoyed the fun.

With market stalls, buskers, a visit from local Elder Martin Ballangarry as Santa, children enjoying pony rides on the closedoff main street and plenty of other entertainment, the atmosphere was alive and social.

“It was wonderful to see people from the community coming together and chatting late into the night,” remarked Phillida Hartley, one of the event’s organisers.

The festival has traditionally been held on the last day of the school calendar and Phillida sees it as an opportunity for people who don’t always see eye-to-eye to

join together in celebration of the season.

Nambucca Valley Mayor Rhonda Hoban officially opened the event, which was organised jointly by the Bowraville Lions Club, St James Anglican Church and the Bowraville Chamber of Commerce in the style of

previous events like it that have been held many times over the past 40 years.

This year the Bowraville Christmas Festival finished by 9 pm and the streets and pavements showed little sign of the evening’s festivities the next morning when NOTA stopped by.

Christmas spirit alive and well

By Mick BIRTLES GENEROUS locals have been dropping items into the Nambucca Plaza Pharmacy to be distributed as Christmas gifts for those who may be doing it tough over the holiday period.

What initially appeared to be a gesture of kindness by the customers and staff of the pharmacy was actually a part of a much larger demonstration of the Christmas spirit by some amazing organisations and members of the community.

“The Nambucca Plaza Pharmacy has had a long

association with Lions Clubs in the district and, as the community supports us, we wanted to do something to support the community and saw the collection of Christmas gift donations as a way to do that,” Nambucca Plaza Pharmacy’s Calissa Keough told News Of The Area.

The gifts collected by the Nambucca Plaza Pharmacy were then taken by the Lions Club of Nambucca Heads to Macksville to be included in food hampers being put together and distributed by an organisation known as Global Care.

Global Care works as an extension of the local church, and states that their operations are on a mission

to love and serve their local communities.

Each local Global Care operation responds to the specific needs of the people in their respective community.

Local operations have established food care programs, counselling services, low-cost shopping opportunities, and support for minority groups.

At Macksville the Global Care team, Lions and other community volunteers work hard to put together hampers to be distributed where they are needed across the district.

“We believe that love has to look like something so we reach out to help those who may be homeless and living in their cars, coming out of domestic violence

situations or families who are struggling,” Global Care’s Moira Hodgekiss told News Of The Area.

“Many people and families have never had to reach out before so we work hard to break the stigma around receiving what may be perceived as charity and show people that we are there for them and we are helping them out of love.”

Moira provided the example of a lady they reached out to last Christmas who was living in her car with her children here in the

Nambucca Valley with no food or gifts at Christmas.

“Many people don’t realise that it is happening here under our noses but we see it every week,” Moira added.

The food that is distributed comes from multiple sources including donations from generous locals, community groups and purchased from food banks.

Global Care initially aimed to produce 100 hampers however they advise that the need has now exceeded that amount.

Once the food is put together in washing baskets by the volunteers, gifts, such as those collected at the Plaza Pharmacy, will be placed in the baskets.

Global Care is not funded so the food and gifts will be distributed across the district by volunteers who will use their own vehicles and pay for their own fuel.

Anti-blueberry group addresses Council meeting

ONCE again, blueberry farming was thrust into the public spotlight when three speakers used the public forum of the fortnightly Nambucca Valley Council meeting to address councillors on the issue.

A large crowd of supporters including local regenerative farmer and documentarian Rachel Ward were present in the viewing gallery.

The speakers continued to challenge and interrogate the Mayor and councillors with a series of direct questions and accusations regarding past decisions (or lack thereof) on the matter of blueberry farming.

Lucy Shepherd of Eungai Rail, from the newly formed Nambucca Environmental Network, addressed the issue of land conflicts and used her five minutes to explain how Council, by not doing more when this topic was voted on in 2017, had set the scene for current land-use conflicts between Valley residents and the recent influx of blueberry farmers to the area.

Next Raewyn Macky gave

a powerful speech on the topic, accusing some councillors of not bothering to respond to the invitations she has been sending them.

Ms Macky lives next door to a recently developed blueberry farm and detailed how she had gone over and introduced herself to her new neighbours, but received no answers to her questions as to what they were planning to do with the farm.

In the days and weeks after moving in and before she could say or do anything else, the new owners allegedly removed every tree on the block, including a 100-year old gum, and covered every square metre of the property in symmetrical rows of black plastic and quickly drilled a bore.

She questioned how the area could support such a “thirsty crop”.

“The blueberry farms are growing in abundance here, in part because our Council makes it too easy for them,” she said.

“In doing so you are not protecting existing landholders, you are not protecting the land and waterways, you are not

protecting the existing farming diversity and livelihoods and you are certainly not protecting the people,” Ms Macky told Council.

“Has anyone gone out to any of the properties that neighbour blueberry farms in this valley?

“Does Council know how many blueberry farms are in the Valley?

“Since no DAs are required, I’m not sure that you could know this?

“Have you seen how much soil destruction, tree removal,

suspicious water activity etc is going on?” she asked councillors.

The watching crowd heckled and challenged Mayor Rhonda Hoban, who responded by calling the meeting to order several times.

The Mayor then once again addressed the gallery with her reasons for abstaining from discussions and votes when the blueberry matter is an item on the Council’s agenda.

“Like many of you, I live immediately next to a

“People would perceive that having a large blueberry farm next door would devalue my property and reduce the sale.

“For that reason and I have explained this before I have no choice but to declare a pecuniary interest in this matter where Council is making a decision,” she explained.

“If we come up against difficulties at the State Government level then we, the Council and the community, will fight the fight together,” Councillor David Jones later told News Of The Area.

Reduce waste this holiday season

By Andrea FERRARI ON a mission to create sustainable communities all year round, local environment charity OzGREEN is sharing waste-free creative ideas for the festive period.

Bellingen High School student Marie Black, completing work experience with OzGREEN, took to the challenge of creating a resource offering ten easy and enjoyable ways to reduce waste during the holiday season.

“Christmas is often a wasteful time,” said Marie.

"Reducing waste is a passion of mine, and my family has embraced traditions that foster connection while lessening our impact on the Earth.

“If we can do it, anyone can," she told News Of The Area.

Here’s the suggestions created by Marie for OzGREEN’s sustainable Christmas resource.

1. Mindful Gift Giving Choose durable gifts aligned with the recipient's interests.

Opt for sustainable materials or consider gifting experiences.

2. Present Wrapping Most wrapping paper is

non-recyclable due to its plastic coating.

Wrap with scrap paper or old fabrics instead!

3. Food Buy in-season produce from local growers.

Plan your meals in advance and consume leftovers promptly to reduce waste.

To manage this, consider reusing items for crafts, compost organic waste, and recycle materials responsibly.

INTERNATIONAL Volunteer Day aims to raise awareness of the crucial role volunteers play in every community.

This year’s theme was ‘If Everyone Did’, sharing the message that if each person volunteered a small part of their time, the world would be a better place.

For International Volunteer Day, NVC Group hosted a volunteer information morning tea to celebrate and encourage more volunteers at their aged care facilities.

“Your time is incredibly powerful, half an hour spent having a cuppa with someone or playing a game of cards could make someone’s day,” said Sonia Watts, one of the dedicated Recreational Activities Officers at Autumn Lodge in Macksville.

International Volunteer Day is an opportunity to acknowledge, thank and shine a light on the important work of volunteers.

A Christmas movie for every member of the family

IT’S a common scene in any household: the evening meal is finished, the dishes have been cleaned and everyone has bathed and are relaxing before bed.

In older times the family would gather around the TV and watch…whatever was on.

These days the ubiquity of entertainment and screens upon which to enjoy it means that every room of the house can become a lounge room, and there’s no reason why it would be any different for families at Christmas.

True inter-generational

films are hard to come by, and there’s only so many times everyone can sit down to The Christmas Chronicles before even the appeal of Kurt Russell starts to wane.

But worry not, for there is surely a film that will appeal to every member of the family currently parked under your roof for Christmas.

The little ones need to be settled down first and since no-one can enjoy anything until they’re in bed anyway, they can just be set in front of the main TV and enjoy a viewing of Stick-Man (2015 Magic Light Pictures, directed by Jeroen Jaspaert and Daniel Snaddon).

This little gem from the UK tells the story of an

anthropomorphic stick who braves the wild outdoors and faces the peril of a very playful dog in order to get home to his family for Christmas.

It’s charming, touching and short, meaning you can pack those little ones off to bed and reclaim the TV. Parents who are not concerned about their primary-aged children being suggestible may chance introducing them to Home Alone - so long as all power tools and cans of paint are securely locked away.

current financial year.

Further, monthly financial and progress reports and updates will be tabled at the Ordinary Council Meetings for the duration of the project.

Bellingen Shire Council General Manager Mark Griffioen added, “This is an important project for our Shire in addressing environmental concerns and meeting the needs of our community members.

“It is also imperative that Council ensures that a project of this scale is delivered efficiently, and that we appropriately manage the challenges of rising costs that are currently impacting many capital works projects across Australia.

“Council is steadfast in its commitment to delivering this project to our community and we thank everyone – most notably the impacted residents and business owners – for their patience as we have navigated through several unforeseen challenges.

“We believe that the revised tender received from Leed Engineering Pty Ltd along with the additional budget secured from the Sewer Fund Reserve provides us with an acceptable path forward to progress the Sewering Coastal Villages project and begin delivering the considerable benefits to our region.”

The Sewering Coastal Villages Project aims to install sewer infrastructure along our coastal villages to treat wastewater to a high standard before being released into the environment.

Bello Council to accept tender for upgrade of Urunga Sewage Treatment Plant BELLINGEN Shire Council has taken a significant step forward in the Sewering Coastal Villages project, with a decision to enter into a contract for the upgrade of the Urunga Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) resolved at the Monday 18 Extraordinary Meeting of Council.

The Urunga STP upgrade marks Phase 1 of the Sewering Coastal Villages project, a collaborative effort between the Council and the NSW Government to enhance the sewer system.

Following the completion of a tender negotiation process for the project, a report was presented to Council as a confidential matter in the recent Extraordinary Meeting, with Council awarding the project to Leed Engineering Pty Ltd. The tender process for the Urunga STP began in April 2023, with a number of challenges faced including the rising costs of project delivery due to supply chain shortages and inflation.

Urunga Wetlands flourishing with flora and bustling with birds

By Andrea FERRARI PARADISE is restored across Urunga Wetlands six years after the completion of a $10 million clean-up of one of NSW’s most polluted sites.

The filthy site was transferred to the NSW Government as Crown land to treat and contain more than 36,400 tonnes of contaminated soil and sediment, with the vision to transform the area into a flourishing wetland habitat.

The Bellingen Birders group, with up to 80 active members, has been undertaking regular bird surveys since the wetlands opened following the remediation project in 2017.

The latest surveys have found the revived wetlands are now home to 123 different bird species, a virtual alphabet from Australasian Darters to Yellow-tailed BlackCockatoos and many more.

“The Urunga Wetlands is an oasis for birdlife,” Bellingen Birders coordinator Richard Jordan told News Of The Area.

“If you take the loop walk around the reserve you will find it hard to believe that it was once a highly

contaminated processing site for antimony ore.

“Bellingen Birders has been noting the birds present on a regular basis, since the rehabilitation process was completed, and over 120 species have been recorded.

“Highlights have included Magpie Geese, Black Swans and Combcrested Jacanas.

“The geese, normally found further north, have even settled down to breed on an adjacent lake in Bellinger Keys Estate, with regular visits to the Wetlands.

“The Jacana (or lily-trotter) can be seen walking confidently on the lily pads using its enormous feet.”

The waterbirds come and go

according to conditions elsewhere.

“The current heavy rain inland will see the swamphens, coots and ducks heading off to take advantage of new feeding areas.

“How they know about them is still a mystery.

“When those ephemeral lakes dry out the waterbirds will return to Urunga.

“In that sense the Wetlands form a significant drought refuge.”

Visiting Urunga Wetlands is a delight, and an example of what can be achieved to reverse the harms of the past, according to Richard.

“If you see someone out there with binoculars it is probably one of our members. q The Urunga Wetlands as seen from above.

“Say g’day and have a chat with them about the birds you have seen.”

Jason John, Local Coordinator, Bellinger Landcare Inc told NOTA, “The support from the NSW Environmental Trust was invaluable in enabling us to get contractors to really push along the first stage of weed control and regeneration, and train up our local groups to work alongside them at regular working bees.

“We’ve had about 20 people working on riparian restoration at the wetlands and about half a dozen at nearby Station Creek.

“In the dry weather, you can walk all the way from Bellinger Keys, around the Wetlands boardwalk, along the Landcare site, down the road and under the rail bridge to Station Creek, also recently rehabilitated, and then turn right to walk along the lagoon, spotting some of the 120-plus bird species recorded

VALLEYS Cricket Club have continued their terrific start to the Coffs Harbour District Association’s first grade season.

Valleys Cricket Club remain undefeated so far this season, recording their seventh straight win with an 83-run victory against the Northern Districts Rebels in their one-day match at Woolgoolga.

Valleys Cricket won the toss and elected to bat, finishing at 5/229 from their 40 overs.

Mike Hartley was the standout with the bat finishing on 94 not out.

Connor Burgess dismissed both Valleys openers on his way to taking

2-44 from his 7 overs.

With the Rebels needing 230 for victory, top bowling from Valleys had the home side all out for 146 in the 27th over.

Josh Bartlett, Julian Hulbert, and Vamsi Ramisetty all took three wickets each, with Bartlett taking 3-24 from 5.4 overs, Hulbert taking 3-41 from 8 overs, and Ramisetty taking 3-37 from his 8 overs.

U3A Fishing for Fun

ANOTHER successful year has drawn to a close for the U3A Fishing for Fun Group. That is always an excuse to return to Valla Beach and have a Christmas Party. But before that we must earn our keep and catch a few fish.

We spread out all over the Deep Creek estuary, north, south and on the bridge. The best spot proved to be north towards the ocean and utilising a little sand bar or maybe it was the best angler that was in that spot.

Chasing 160 for victory, Sawtell reached the target after 24 overs finishing at 3/160.

DEAR Jasminda,

The Tale of the Two Rabbits ON a magical Christmas morning, George, aged eight, and his younger sister Milla, aged seven, woke up to find two adorable and fluffy bunnies under their Christmas tree - gifts from Father Christmas himself.

Their parents, however, had their reservations about these new additions to the family, considering they already had a Labrador named Paddy, who was the apple of everyone's eye.

Before the arrival of these bunnies, their parents had voiced their concerns to Father Christmas' elves, who assured them that the rabbits would not disrupt their household's balance.

They were promised that Paddy would take to the rabbits just fine, given dogs' general affinity for rabbits.

However, in the days that followed, a noticeable change overcame Paddy.

The once lively and affectionate dog began to withdraw and his interaction with George and Milla steadily declined.

Paddy became so distant that he relocated to the neighbours', where he received the attention and affection he was missing at home.

Alarmed by Paddy’s sudden change in behaviour, George and Milla's parents reached-out to the elves.

They reminded the elves of their assurances that the rabbits would not impact the household dynamics and Paddy’s wet nose would not be put out of joint.

Considering the cost of dogs and the loss of their beloved Paddy, George and Milla's parents sought advice from a local solicitor, aiming to recover damages resulting from the introduction of the rabbits.

The solicitor advised them that they could have a case against the elves under the Australian Consumer Law. The elves, by assuring the parents that the rabbits wouldn’t affect Paddy, made a promise that turned out to be false.

Under Consumer Law, businesses must not make false or misleading representations when offering to supply or promote goods and services.

The Court concluded that the elves had indeed breached their duty and George and Milla's parents had relied on their misrepresentation.

However, the Court also found that the circumstances were too remote to recover the costs of replacing Paddy.

The ruling served as a reminder to the elves to always keep their promises realistic and within perspective.

Cinnamon Scrolls a perfect treat for the holiday season

WELL, another year has rolled around and for me the smell of baking and cinnamon, gingerbread and puddings always helps me to remember what time of year it is.

Today I want to share one of my favourite recipes for all year round but especially at Christmas time Cinnamon Scrolls.

Whether you know them as Cinnamon Rolls, Cinnamon Snails, Korvapuusti, Hagabullar, Schnecken Rolle or something else – these things are known all over world and have as many names as there are cars heading out to Nambucca’s beaches on a hot day in the Christmas holidays.

You will need these ingredients for the dough: 4 cups Plain Flour 2 teaspoons instant yeast powder 2/3 cup powdered milk 3 eggs 2 tablespoons castor sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 120g soft or melted butter About 1 cup warm water Mix everything all together well q The finished Cinnamon Scrolls.

(I use a breadmaker) until the mixture makes a smooth dough.

Add more or less water as you need for this bit to make a good firm dough.

Let it sit for a while to leaven, make two long cylinders then take the first one and use a rolling pin to roll it into a rectangle about 30 cm by 40cm.

Now it’s time to make the filling.

Filling 100g melted butter ½ cup castor sugar 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon Sultanas, cut up dried apricots, chocolate chips (or whatever you like to put in yours).

Mix the butter, sugar and cinnamon together. Use a pastry brush to spread half of the wet filling all over the flattened dough before sprinkling half the dried fruit mixture over it.

Starting at the side closest to you, slowly roll the mixture up to make a long cylinder again, this one full of your filling.

Now get a good knife and cut

Roll the dough into long cylinders and cut rounds.

EVERY year our extended family gets a bit bigger and the cost of Christmas is becoming too expensive for me, particularly now I'm retired.

How can I reduce costs and still make everyone feel important?

Doris W. Dear Doris, Can you remember the Christmas gifts you were given five years ago?

I can't, but I can remember the day itself and the enjoyment of getting together with family members, some of whom are no longer here.

Without getting sentimental on you (cue Coldplay music) just having your company is what will be remembered.

No matter how small the gift, it will be appreciated.

I was trying to think of an inspiring quote to add, and cross-sections about 2 cm wide from the roll until it’s all done.

Arrange the circles on baking paper on an oven tray.

Do the same for the second half of your dough.

Bake in the oven for about 10-15 minutes at about 180 degrees in a fan-forced oven.

Keep an eye on them until you get them nicely brown and the way you like them to be.

Icing is optional.

You could use your own recipe but I often mix 3 tablespoons of milk powder with 2 tablespoons of soft butter

though many came to mind this one by Betty Reese tickled me: “If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito.”

Gifts don't have to be expensive, in fact many of the best ones can be made with things you already have: homemade biscuits, jams or herb pots, and vouchers such as a onehour head massage, or an oven or fridge clean.

For younger children it could be a voucher for a day at a waterpark, zoo or museum (with you taking them -- this doubles up as a gift for their parents as they'll get some time out).

Art classes or supplies, a craft or cooking day voucher, or a board game that comes with the promise of being one of the players, are gifts that keep on giving.

These presents also give a gift back to the environment that is overclogged with cheap presents that are now discarded and buried in landfill.

When they are just a little bit warm, enjoy your delicious scrolls with a cup of tea or coffee.

Saturday was our “Yellow Shirt Day” – a Cancer Council Fundraiser. In prior years, Neil Duffus & Colin Wormleaton competed in “The Longest Day Golf Challenge” – 72 holes of golf in one day, but this year, with the pair unable to compete, we continued the fundraising through our Saturday competition – players decked out in the finest Yellow Shirts, and using our Yellow (Gold) Tee course layout. Just about everone donated, and were rewarded with tickets in the Yellow Raffle, raising over $1,000 for Cancer Council – well done everyone - players, volunteers and Bar Staff. With a HIO and an Eagle recorded, some players certainly made the most of the shorter layout! In Division 1 (0 to 14) Peter Scott (5) scored 39 points to win from Stephen Doherty (14) with 37 points.

Top score of the day to James

McIlveen (15) with 40 points to win Division 2 (15 to 20) from Robert Coneybeare (15) 39 points. Fast improving newcomer Elisabeth Newberry (37) won Division 3 (21 to 45) with 39 points from Philip Smith (33) on 38 points. Other good scores from Colin Dunne 38, Dianne O’Leary, Peter Bush, Trevor Hopkins, & Stephen Carr 37, and the Ball Rundown to 34 points on c/b. While drawing comparisons to the classic kids’ musical is a smart move, this documentary about a Zimbabwean lion is the real, eye-opening deal. This special doesn’t shy away from the brute force and blood and gore of the life of a lion. From award-winning British documentarian and National Geographic contributor Peter Lamberti, it’s a tragic story. Before his sudden death at the hands of an American big-game shooter in 2015, Cecil was roaming in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, where he was also being filmed and observed by Oxford University researchers, who captured stunning footage.

You needn’t know the lyrics to every Christmas carol and ditty to get into the infectious merrymaking spirit of this celebration. With a few little fa-la-las and a smattering of jingle bells, this annual concert from The Domain in Sydney has got the audience covered with a stellar line-up of singers. LAST Sunday the Nippers of Macksville Scotts Head Surf Life Saving Club enjoyed a Christmas party fun day.

The kids were kept busy with beach and water activities, a monster toy raffle, a giant blow up pontoon, a BBQ and a surprise visit from Santa, who swapped his sleigh and reindeers for a surf boat for the day.

“The Nippers have been learning surf and beach safety through a fun program and competition each Sunday, with ages ranging from five to fourteen years,” said Dereck Patton, Macksville Scotts Head Surf Life Saving Club.

“These children are our lifesavers of the future and if their enthusiasm and love of the beach continues then our community is in safe hands.”
