By Rachel MCGREGORALLEN THE links in the chain guarding the land which houses the Nambucca Heads Lions Club storage container were broken into between 9 and 11 May. Bill Shepherd, Club Secretary, has calculated that over $700 worth of tools and equipment was stolen.

This included the box trailer, loading ramps, marquees, tool box, gas bottles, a mower, edger, pressure cleaner, generator and a first aid kit.

Upon entering the container Club members

discovered that the thieves had left a mess behind.

“They went through it all,” Bill said.

“Stuff was all over the place.

“Someone had gone in there and tossed it all around.”

This included the damaging of the Christmas

decorations used to decorate around Nambucca Heads.

When asked if the thieves would have realised that the container belonged to the Lions Club, Bill commented that as soon as the container was opened the Lions Club banners were the first thing that could be seen.

The Lions Club is very

grateful to all the members of the public who have offered donations to assist with the replacement of all the stolen equipment.

These items are fundamental to the Lions being able to run their programs which assist the community.

From 17 May local vaccine supplies have increased as participating general practices receive more doses to offer patients.

Local Health Districts are also increasing vaccination clinics across the region.

Healthy North Coast Chief Executive Julie Sturgess said, “It’s terrific to see vaccination numbers going up in our region and excellent we have passed the 50,000 milestone.

“We are a long way off the majority of North Coast residents being vaccinated though,” she cautioned.

“The threat of a COVID-19 outbreak remains a real possibility.

“Expanding the dose availability in the coming weeks will give more and more residents the opportunity to get protected, which is great,” she said.

In the Australian Government’s staged rollout of the COVID-19 vaccination program, the most vulnerable people in the community are targeted

to receive their vaccination first.

There are two different COVID-19 vaccines currently available in Australia – AstraZeneca and Pfizer.

In general, the AstraZeneca vaccine is recommended for people aged 50 and over and the Pfizer vaccine is recommended for people under 50.

Anyone aged fifty and

over can now make an appointment to get a COVID-19 vaccination.

You can make a booking with your local participating GP, one of several centrally located GP Respiratory Clinics or your local Aboriginal Medical Service.

Almost 57K Vaccinated on North Coast

HEALTHY North Coast, the delivery arm of the Primary Health Care Network on the North Coast reports that almost fifty seven thousand COVID-19 vaccinations have been administered in the region.

The strong support for the vaccination program across the region has been a mix of the AstraZeneca vaccination and the Pfizer vaccination.

A Healthy North Coast spokesperson said, “So far, 51,663 doses of the COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine have been administered, predominantly through primary care, and more than 5,300 Pfizer doses

Maureen Parkyns lives in the Nambucca Valley community and delights in volunteering as the local coordinator for BlazeAid, headquartered in Macksville Showground.

“It’s a lovely area to live in and I don’t want to see people suffering, it’s a pleasure to

give back to the community.

“They are our neighbours, to them I am a familiar face when I come to help them in their strife.

“When I came back from living in New Zealand I thought I need to do something so I volunteered for Lifetime Connect, saying ‘I’ll see how I go’.”

Well, it’s grown from there and today Shirley is delivering meals four to five times a week.

“I love meeting people and having a laugh and a talk,” said Shirley.

“Especially at lunchtime, I often find people alone, so I chat, but not too long as there’s lots of meals to deliver.”

The Anglican Church team at Bowraville also have a committed cohort of

volunteers.

Geoff Byron and his wife Trish have been volunteering at Bowraville Anglican Church since 2019.

“As volunteers we have assisted with the Evacuation Centre at the time of the bush fires, two Christmas Day functions and the Blokes Brekky at Jimmy’s Kitchen every month,” Geoff told News Of The Area.

“Not only is it extremely

satisfying knowing you are helping the local community, but we have met so many interesting people and made so many wonderful friends,” said Geoff.

THE Oxley Electorate Woman of the Year Award is an award that recognises women who demonstrate excellence in business and society or makes an outstanding contribution personally and professionally.

The 2021 winner certainly ticks all of those boxes.

On April 28, Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey presented Nambucca Valley local Judy Ward with this prestigious award.

“She goes above and beyond her role as the CEO of the Macksville Ex Services Club to represent the interests of her community and ensure appropriate help is available when needed,” Ms Pavey said of this year’s winner.

Mrs Ward is not only well known for her amazing management skills at the club but also her tireless efforts supporting her community.

The Nambucca Valley has faced its fair share of disasters over the past three years; from a drought, bushfires, a pandemic, a

club alive and still offer something to the community, even if it was only a quick reassuring chat when they collected their takeaway food.

And when the floods came raging through the community in March, the club became a key place for information, directing people to the appropriate resources.

Mrs Ward wasn’t aware of her nomination for The Oxley Electorate Woman of the Year until Melinda Pavey’s office called her asking if she would accept the nomination.

“I said yes,” Judy said, “Without really knowing what the award was for.”

Mrs Ward was later informed she had in fact won the award and was invited to the award ceremony in Sydney to accept the honour.

She was all set and ready to attend when urgent business arose at the club and Judy regretfully declined, putting the needs of the Club and her community first.

“I was setting up for the Elders Olympics meet and greet and Melinda Pavey came in with Janine Reed and presented me with the Woman of the Year Award,” she told News Of The Area.

When asked what this award means to her, Judy said, “I am really proud of the award but this award wouldn’t be for me unless I had the awesome team I have behind me.

“The things I do in the community don’t happen by one person, it is a team effort.

“Not only is it the staff around me but also the volunteers coming in from the community to help.”

Nambucca Valley Performers: A Youthful Perspective

THROUGHOUT the month of May, the Nambucca Valley Performers group held a series of shows at the theatre at Macksville Public School to celebrate comedy and showcase three different and timely settings; heaven, the 1950s and a dystopian steampunk era.

“My character, I thought, was speaking for the community, to set up a voice for it,” said Helen Kirkpatrick, a performer from the steampunk era of the show.

“For that era, I think we just drew more on the ups and downs with its different strengths and community balance.

“In terms of persona, you could be as loud and overthe-top, as it could express the community feel of balance and character.”

While the shows centre on a target audience of adults and is based around entertaining people, there was also much to be taken from the themes centred on youth experiences and messages for young people within the performances.

In Part Two of the show, which focuses on a monstrous transylvanian setting depicted in 1950s radio-drama fashion, there are lessons to learn for young people within.

“Education comes in as well in learning about how all the radio shows were done, where people dressed up in front of a live audience and that sound effects were done by a separate crew

instead of a computer,” said Lisa Yeo, who plays Nellie in the steam-punk segment of the show.

The show provides escapist scenarios for people to enjoy, with the audience having fun throughout.

For the young and old performers of the group, that sense of enjoyment appears on-stage, as does their passion for what they do.

Local CWA supports Government’s mice plaque support package

THE Nambucca Valley Country Women’s Association (CWA) recently joined other branches in welcoming support for farmers and communities via a support package from the NSW Government.

The Country Women's Association (CWA) of NSW has welcomed the acknowledgement by the NSW Government of the mice plague in western NSW with a $50 million support package for affected farmers and communities.

Nambucca Heads CWA Branch Secretary Kathleen Miller told News Of The Area the CWA supports the funding, which includes free of charge grain treatment for farmers and rebates for small businesses and households.

“There’s a lot of grief out there and a lot of issues for primary producers with farms and

food.

“You can’t sell products if they have mice droppings in them,” she said.

She said the financial and health implications for rural and regional communities was enormous and they were now hopeful the Government would continue to monitor the crisis and introduce further measures as the need arose, with the association and NSW Farmers continuing their advocacy on behalf of these communities.

“After enduring drought,

fires and COVID-19, these areas now have a plague to contend with and they’ve been doing it on their own for months.

“Along with crop, fodder and machinery losses, town businesses have suffered stock losses and damage, and then they have to deal with the mice invading their homes and impacting their health, both physical and mental.

“This assistance package will provide some relief, and lets these communities know that the NSW Government has acknowledged their plight,” she continued.

“We are now hopeful the Government will continue to monitor the crisis and be able to act with further measures as the need arises, and our association and NSW Farmers will continue our advocacy on behalf of these communities for as long as it takes.”

NSW Farmers’ Association President James Jackson said the acknowledgement by the NSW Government of the enormous impact of the plague on rural and regional NSW communities was welcome, with costs

of baiting running into the millions of dollars.

“A recent survey we did on this issue emphasised just how much stress this has been placing on farmers and other small businesses as they try to control the mice and the damage they’re doing, so the assistance announced by the NSW Government today is welcome,” he said.

“We look forward to further discussions with the Agriculture Minister on these measures and how they’re going to be implemented, but a timely and efficient rollout is essential, especially with winter planting now underway.”

The local Nambucca CWA branch will continue to support the funding package rollout in the local area.

The next meeting of the Nambucca CWA is 3 June at 10.00.a.m. at the Uniting/ CWA Hall Ridge Street Nambucca Heads.

The branch is also hosting the upcoming Mid North Coast Group Council meeting for twenty two branches from Nambucca Heads, Gloucester, Port Macquarie, Gladstone and places in between on 22 July.

They buy their food en route and have supplies of jerky given to them by local Brisbane butcher, Capalaba Fresh Meat & Poultry, the manager of which has offered young Will a job in the future.

The pair generally start their day off in a talkative mood.

“Around midday it goes quiet,” said Will, adding, “Then we’re all chatty again by the end of the day.”

“I enjoy my own thoughts and the tranquillity,” said Tim. “I started thinking existential thoughts about twelve years ago, asking the bigger questions, and I wasn’t satisfied with the answers.

“Now I find peace in nature, and think.”

Roads and sewer top priorities at Stuarts Point Community Catch-up

URGENT action to address damaged roads and fasttracking plans for a sewage system were among the key recommendations from community members at a meeting hosted by Kempsey Shire Council in Stuarts Point on Thursday, May 13.

The meeting, part of the council’s 2021 program of “Community Catchups” designed to facilitate conversations between residents and officials across the Macleay Valley, was well attended in the wake of the recent floods, with at least 65 locals showing up to share their concerns and ideas.

Fishermans Reach Road, a stretch of which has remained under water since the flood, was a major topic of conversation, with one community member noting that some elderly residents have been relying on support from neighbours to access food and medical services for more than a month.

temporary repairs was set to commence on Thursday, May 20, and will involve the road being closed from 8.30am to 3.30pm to allow for placement of pipe, rock bridging works and road construction.

The temporary repairs will allow one-lane access after completion, and council will then conduct a survey and design works to determine a permanent solution.

No timeline was provided for the repair of the potholes along Grassy Head Road or for the reopening of the streets that remain closed in Stuarts Point.

Council estimates that the connection of properties to a new sewage system will begin in mid to late 2023, replacing the current septic systems, which spilled into properties and streets due to rises in the groundwater caused by the flooding in March.

Des Bruest, chairman of not-for-profit advocate group Stuarts Point and District Community Organisation (SPADCO), said delays to the sewage plant scheme have caused some frustration.

was supposed to happen by 2021, but it hasn’t even started yet,” he said.

Other community priorities included improvements in coordination and communication among authorities responding to disaster events, the installation of kerb and

gutters to assist better street drainage during heavy rain, and the establishment of an emergency centre in Stuarts Point to ensure more timely disaster responses, with several people indicating a willingness to volunteer.

We’ve fought hard to secure extra support for regional Australians in this Budget because we know that now is the time to create jobs and stimulate growth and provide a better quality of life for people in the regions.

We know that more and more Australians are moving to regional Australia and that is why we are investing a record amount in local infrastructure.

DELIVERING LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE The Liberal and Nationals Government is delivering a further round of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program, with an additional $1 billion to fund further priority projects throughout Australia and delivering an additional 9,000 jobs in regional communities across Australia.

And we’re delivering round 6 of the Building Better Regions Fund, supporting regional and remote communities by funding shovel-ready infrastructure projects up to the value of $10 million.

ECONOMIC RECOVERY

INVESTMENT FOR JOBS

In March 2020, there were 13 million Australians employed. Over the next two months, around 900,000 Australians lost their job.

Around 19,200 businesses in Cowper are able to write off the full value of eligible assets purchased.

By March 2021, there were 13.1 million Australians employed – 74,000 more than pre-COVID. Australia was the first advanced economy to have more people employed than pre-COVID. Last year, Australia’s economy contracted by 2.5% – compared to 5% for Canada and Japan and over 8% for the UK, France and Italy.

Housing starts are at the highest level in 20 years and consumer sentiment at its highest in 11 years.

There’s more to be done, but our plan is working.

TAX RELIEF Around 56,600 taxpayers in Cowper will benefit from additional tax relief this year – up to $1,080 for individuals or $2,160 for couples.

This rewards hard work and generates activity, which in turn helps local businesses and creates jobs.

REGIONAL COMMUNICATIONS Digital connectivity in the bush drives economic growth for the nation, which is why we’re delivering a further $105.8 million for Round 2 of the Regional Connectivity Program - $45.6 million for northern Australia.

For example, this encourages a tradie or farmer to buy a vehicle or harvester or helping a manufacturer expand their production line.

These incentives will further fill our nation’s order books and generate opportunities for small businesses, to buy, sell, deliver, install and maintain these assets.

HEALTH AND MENTAL HEALTH The Liberal and Nationals Government has committed $1.9 billion to expand the vaccine rollout, including prioritising remote communities of less than 5,000 people The Budget includes record funding for hospitals, Medicare, mental health, aged care and the NDIS and $65.8 million to increase the Rural Bulk Billing Incentive. It includes new medicines listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme to treat breast cancer, lung cancer, severe osteoporosis, severe asthma and chronic migraines.

Further mental health funding will provide more headspace centres, a new network of 40 Head to Health centres and more services through Medicare.

BUILDING THE ROADS OF AUSTRALIA The Liberal and Nationals Government is continuing its record investment in infrastructure, especially in regional Australia. Our 10-year, $110 billion infrastructure pipeline will see a boom in regional construction – sealing roads and improving safety for freight and families with $1 billion for the Road Safety Program.

The Budget includes substantial measures to encourage more R&D and onshore manufacturing

SUPPORTING CHILDCARE The Government will increase the Childcare Subsidy for families with more than one child up to five in childcare.

This will benefit over 1,370 families living in Cowper seeing them better off by an average of $2,200 each year, and we’re also removing the $10,560 cap on the Childcare Subsidy We are increasing funding for preschools in Cowper and making childcare more affordable and accessible.

SECURING AGRICULTURE There’s a better deal for farmers and our regions by delivering $96.9 million to protect our agriculture industry from pests that can devastate our local producers.

And we’re continuing to protect and improve our regional environment with a National Soil Strategy and Action Plan which will assess the impact of land management on soil conditions, and boosting on-farm biodiversity with $32.1 million to support growers and producers.

IMPROVED AGED CARE A further $17.7 billion is being committed to significantly improve the aged care system.

This includes another 80,000 new home care packages (bringing the total to 275,000).

This will help the 39,482 senior Australians living in Cowper and deliver more home care places, more funding for residential aged care and increase the amount of time resident are cared for while strengthening and enforcing standards of care.

Nambucca Valley Flood Recovery Centre is open

THE Nambucca Valley Recovery Centre is available to all residents in the Valley affected by the March 2021 floods.

This centre is located at the Senior Citizens Centre at 37/39 Princess Street, Macksville. q Bellevue Drive, Macksville during the March Floods 2021.

It gives locals the opportunity to see a representative from Services NSW, Red Cross, community organisations and welfare bodies to discuss what the next step is for them.

These bodies, with assistance from local, state and Federal government, will provide those affected by the disaster with access to information pertaining to Insurance and Legal Support,

Mental Health and Well Being Services, Accommodation Advice, Replacing important lost documents, Clean Up Services, Livestock and Crop Advice, Financial Services and Business Support.

Mayor Rhonda Hoban states on the Nambucca Valley Council website, “I encourage everyone who requires support to attend the Recovery Centre so they can have access to assistance.”

The centre is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays from 9:30am-3:30pm.

MID North Coast NSW Emergency Situations, an independent information page (not associated with any emergency service) have created a platform in which locals can document the disastrous March 2021 flooding of the Mid North Coast.

Paul and his wife, Sarah are asking for local support.

“What we are hoping you can help us with, is the

documentation of this event in the form of pictures and videos through the eyes of locals, not just what the media showed during the event,” they wrote on a Facebook post.

Since being published on 9 May 2021, the post has over 350 comments from locals, sharing their stories, videos and images of the events.

It has also been shared to various community groups across the Mid North Coast.

Trash and Treasure market returns

THE Nambucca Heads Lions Club Trash and Treasure market returned to the Nambucca Plaza Centre Carpark on 9 May with joy and enthusiasm after a long break owing to restrictions imposed

by COVID. The market has not been held since March 2020.

The Trash and Treasure market is held every second Sunday of each month.

There were 14 happy stall holders displaying their wares for sale.

Approximately 500 people attended the market throughout the day, and according to Club Secretary Bill Shepherd it was, “A great success.”

The Nambucca Heads Lions club relies on fundraising activities, such as sausage sizzles, to raise money needed to complete

community projects.

The community projects and regular activities carried out by the Lions, including the daily cleaning of all the BBQs running from Scotts Head through to the Lions Park at the Headland, require the efforts of committed Lions Club members or Friends of the Lions Club to occur.

Lions Club President Grahame Beatton said, “If we don’t have membership we can’t do what we do.

“Membership is critical to what the club does.

“We clean 11 BBQs every day, all year.

“Quite a few members live out of town so it’s a long way for them to come and clean BBQs.” Alongside these service projects is the vital role that the Lions Club plays in assisting when disaster strikes in the Valley.

Bill shared that the Club is heavily involved in installing

new fencing in areas that were hit by more than one disaster.

Bill said, “The Lions club is again redoing the fencing because of the floods.

“People have been hit for the third time.

“Hit by drought, hit by fire, hit by flood.”

When disaster does hit the Valley the Lions Club is then supported by the International Lions Foundation (ILF) and The Australian Lions Foundation (ALF).

“We have never been refused,” says Bill.

The ALF contributed funds after the recent floods to assist with fencing.

Nambucca Heads Lions Club also works closely with the Nambucca Valley Council, who according to Bill, are very supportive of the Club’s projects.

The Council shows their support by providing workers and tools to complete projects.

THE Nambucca Valley Council is looking to amend its current Companion Animals on Leash and off Leash Policy.

The areas in question are the section of beach between Swimming Creek to Main Beach, Nambucca Heads, and Thistle Park Sports Field, Dudley Street, Macksville.

In the area between Swimming Creek and Main Beach, this amendment request was due to a matter raised by the Vehicular Access to Beaches Committee.

They were requesting the section of beach, a 350m long section, become a dog on a leash area between the hours of 6:00pm-9:00am as it was previous to the 2019

amendment.

The reason for this request is due to the heavy congestion of the Swimming Creek carpark as dog owners are currently using this as the access to the beach where dogs are permitted.

If the request is granted and dogs are allowed on the leash in this 350m section, it is believed that the traffic will spread between the two car parks of Swimming Creek and Main Beach Nambucca Heads.

The second area in question is the Thistle Park Sports Field, Dudley Street, Macksville.

There have been complaints by community members that dog owners are allowing their dogs off the leash to exercise in this park and leaving faeces behind.

There are also great concerns there will be a dog attack.

Currently dogs are not permitted in the sporting field area but are allowed to be in the outer areas on a leash.

The options for amendment in order to create balance between those not wanting dogs in the park and those needing this area to exercise their dogs are: - To increase the signage clearing explaining where dogs are prohibited and where they are allowed on a leash.

- Alternatively, provide and clearly mark three sections.

1) A section South of the playing fields where dogs

DRAFT BOWRAVILLE MASTERPLAN EXHIBITION On 13 May 2021 Nambucca Valley Council resolved to exhibit the draft Bowraville Masterplan prepared by Alan Rudge Architecture. The plan emphasises the opportunities created by a wide street and promoting the central median strip as functional open space.

The Importance Of Community Radio

LOCALl community radio station 2NVR Nambucca Valley Radio is a multiple time winner of the “The Best Little Station In The Nation’ award, and will be celebrating 30 years of broadcasting to the Nambucca community in 2022.

News Of The Area caught up with 2NVR Nambucca Valley Radio President, Donna Collins, for a chat about what it means to deliver a community-based station.

Donna explained, “The initial planning for a local radio station first started in 1984 with Rob Turnell (then an ABC Producer), and several other like-minded people.”

The first test broadcasts started in 1985, and regular broadcasting commenced as a licensed entity at the end of January 1992.

Donna became president in November last year, and explained that the largest responsibility of 2NVR is the broadcasting of local

emergencies and disasters.

“The delivery of emergency releases is very important to remote communities in the

“Towns and properties can become cut off quickly as we saw in the 2019 fires, and

our recent flooding event.”

Community radio plays a key role in keeping people connected in these situations, informing them of emergency services, and abreast of disaster escalation/evacuations.

Nambucca Radio is lucky to have a very functional broadcasting space in the Tewinga Community Hall, equipped with up-to-date technology that allows the station to branch out to the greater community with new and innovative programs.

Donna is very passionate about how the station can contribute to the community especially regarding outside broadcasting.

“Community radio becomes quite an addiction once you get started,” Donna said.

Everyone knows how important the footy season is, and 2NVR is the only local community station

to broadcast the football, next year the station hopes to live stream football games without interrupting scheduled programming as it does at present.

Once a year recruiting and training drives are conducted and Donna would love some volunteers for office administration, manning phones, and multimedia roles.

“There is plenty of room for volunteers to be involved without requiring them to be on-air.”

Home broadcasting started with COVID-19 restrictions in 2020.

The downside is the loss of human contact, but presenters gained in the upskilling of technology, making program delivery more flexible.

Jaanybarr Giirrwaawa - Men Gather Together

ON Monday 24 May at Valla Beach Reserve, Jaanybarr Giirrwaawa - Men Gather Together, will be having their fortnightly gathering.

At the gathering there are ten different Service Providers in attendance, to provide support for the range of different men that attend.

Some of the Service Providers present include Uniting, Health Mid North Coast, Galambila Aboriginal Health Service, and Darrimba Maara Aboriginal Health Clinic.

It is for men who are seeking connection, company and assistance.

Luke Bateman, Uniting Family Child Case Worker, said that the meeting is “open to everyone”.

The last Jaanybarr Giirrwaawa gathering was held at Scotts Head.

It was a Cultural Fishing Day, including a smoking ceremony.

Fee-free training for women in trades THE NSW Government has announced it will support 3,000 training places for women in trades to help boost female representation in construction, manufacturing, engineering, transport and logistics.

The fee-free Built For Women training program will target women aged 16 to 24, female jobseekers, women at risk of unemployment and women in receipt of Commonwealth benefits.

Women currently represent 8.9 percent of all current learners in trades and just 2.1 per cent of all learners studying a trade in the building and construction industry.

Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee

said the program would help boost the number of women working on building sites.

“The Built For Women program is about attracting women to rewarding careers in trades industries that are experiencing skills shortages,” Mr Lee said.

“There has never been a better time to reskill or upskill and take advantage of the employment opportunities arising from the NSW Government’s record $107 billion infrastructure investment, which is creating hundreds of jobs.

“Growing housing developments, new road and infrastructure upgrades as well as the new Western Sydney airport are creating skills demands in

manufacturing, engineering and transport and logistics, providing an opportunity for women to increase their skills and participation in the industry.”

Minister for Women Bronnie Taylor said the Built For Women program would help close the gender gap present in the trades industry.

“The NSW Government is committed to increasing the number of women working in non-traditional trades,” Mrs Taylor said.

“Whether you’re a female school leaver looking to pursue a career as an engineer or a woman looking to retrain as a construction worker – now is the perfect time to train and get started in the industry.”

Record Numbers Attend Womens’ Business Network Meetings

THE Nambucca Valley Womens’ Business Network (NVBWN) reported its largest turnout for their first ever evening meet up.

Committee member Sara Runciman spoke with News Of The Area about the decision to change things up.

“This is our fourth year in operation and up until now we have just been doing morning meetings from 7.30 to 8:30 and monthly meetings.

“After COVID and some reflection time we decided to alternate between morning and evenings and have been heartened by the turnout as a result,” she said.

“The evening meeting was our biggest meeting so far at the Star Hotel with the view and colour changing in the background.”

Keynote speaker Amy Pettingill talked to the group about the importance of knowing and working with

your own strengths.

“It was beautiful and we look forward to our next evening meeting,” said Ms Runciman.

“There’s a whole cohort of women that the previous model missed.

“For many women the morning meetings are beyond impossible, for example if they have younger kids or any kind of restrictions that stop women getting out of the home early.”

The NVBWN is also working hard to meet where women are.

“We do go from town to town as we don’t have a set meeting place so we felt it fit to try and make it as easy as possible for women to come.

Ms Runciman said the members and guests are a 50/50 blend of women who run their own businesses and women who work for others.

“Our next guest is a woman who has run her own business for 40 years and we are really looking forward

Belinda Foley will be speaking at the next event, taking place in June, when it shifts back to a breakfast meeting.

Ms Foley, a homeopath and natural therapist, is the second longest serving homeopath in Australia, serving her community on the mid-north coast of NSW for thirty four years in Macksville.

Mrs Foley will speak about the importance of a sustainable career path.

She continually seeks to improve her natural health business, expanding in both knowledge and modalities, combining her different

personal interests and life management skills.

The breakfast will be held on 10 June at 6.45 am at Wharf Street Cafe at Nambucca Heads and is a ticketed event.

FOSSILS, minerals, crystals and more will go under the hammer at Macleay Gem and Mineral Club’s annual rock auction on Saturday 29 May at Macksville Showground, 111 Rodeo Drive Macksville.

The Macleay Gem and Mineral Club is a not-for-profit community group, and funds raised at auction go towards the rental and insurance of rooms at the Showgrounds.

The day will start with viewing from 9am and the Auction commencing from 10am.

Light refreshments will be available.

An itemised catalogue of the 150 items will be provided and Club President Chris Mattick

and life member Dallas Kemp (Clubs Auctioneer) advise that every child will be given special prizes to help make it a fun event for the whole family.

“The club was founded in Kempsey 50 years ago and recently relocated its club rooms and equipment to Macksville Showground, which now boasts a very well equipped workshop for lapidary endeavours,” said Mr Mattick.

Widower makes massive claim AFTER a messy divorce, Tina enters into a relationship with Harry.

Tina already has two children, namely Elizabeth and Emma.

Tina and Harry get married and 10 years pass.

Unfortunately, Tina is diagnosed with cancer.

She makes a will leaving her estate to her two children equally and makes arrangements for her superannuation to be paid to Harry.

Tina also grants Harry the right to reside in the matrimonial home, registered in her sole name, for six months after her death.

Harry makes a will leaving his estate to his children.

When Tina passes away, Harry is unhappy about the terms of her will and after six months, refuses to leave the house.

Elizabeth and Emma commence proceedings to have Harry removed and in response, he challenges Tina’s will, claiming that he has not been properly provided for.

The parties are unable to resolve the matter at a mediation and a Supreme Court hearing is conducted.

The Court states that generally, a surviving spouse should be left with sufficient assets to secure accommodation and to have an income sufficient to live in the style in which they are accustomed, together with a fund to meet unforeseen expenses.

However, the Court hears that during their marriage, Tina and Harry maintained separate finances and each strictly paid half of the household’s expenses.

The Court also hears that during Tina’s battle with cancer, her relationship with Harry deteriorated and that Elizabeth and Emma took on the role of caring for Tina.

The Court found it to be relevant that by the time the hearing was conducted, Harry had entered into another relationship and had moved out of the house.

Harry’s $1.5 million claim is ultimately dismissed and he is ordered to pay $300,000 in legal costs.

THE New South Wales region of Cowper is number nine in Australia’s top ten hot spots for high blood pressure, the single largest risk factor for stroke.

255 people in the Cowper region had a stroke for the first time in their lives in 2020.

4,430 people are living with the impact of stroke in the community, while 37,067 people in the Cowper region are living with high blood pressure.

to mark World Hypertension Day, May 17, and the official launch of Australia’s Biggest Blood Pressure Check, in which local residents are encouraged to roll up their sleeves throughout May and have a blood pressure check to curb their stroke risk.

Stroke Foundation New South Wales State Manager Rhian Paton-Kelly said blood pressure checks can save lives. “It's estimated more than 37,000 people in the Cowper electorate are living

with high blood pressure, many unknowingly, putting themselves at serious risk of a potentially devastating stroke,” Ms Paton-Kelly said.

“You may think your health is fine but high blood pressure often has no immediate symptoms.

“This can cause them to narrow or break down, increasing the risk of stroke and heart disease. “The higher your blood pressure, the

greater your risk of stroke.”

Stroke can change lives in an instant. It strikes the brain, which controls everything we do, including our thoughts and movements.

Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability.

However, research shows 48 percent of strokes could be prevented if high blood pressure alone was eliminated.

Come To Tea - it’s a big one at Bowra Folk Museum

BOWRAVILLE’s Folk Museum is the venue for the local Biggest Morning Tea this Friday, May 21.

The Biggest Morning Tea, a fundraiser for cancer research, is being organised locally by the Bowraville Senior Citizens.

“Every year we use the Folk Museum,” Gail Stuart, Treasurer for the Senior Citizens told News Of The Area, and the venue attracts a loyal following.

Charging a $5 donation on the day means funds are raised by everyone attending, and then there’s all the raffle prizes and teas, coffees and cakes to buy.

“We have a donation from IGA in Bowraville, too,” said Gail.

“The Seniors bring in home made cakes and gifts to sell and maybe a bottle of wine to raffle.

“Everyone brings a plate so it’s very sociable sitting around and chatting,” said Gail.

“It’s mainly older people but we do get a few young ones, and everyone is welcome.”

“They’re also welcome to go through the museum while they’re here at no extra costs,” said Gail.

Cancer Council Australia is a not-for-profit national organisation which aims to promote cancer control policies and reduce the illness caused by cancer and advises many groups on cancer related issues.

Fundraising includes May’s Biggest Morning Tea, August’s Daffodil Day and a new initiative Junk Free June where people are encouraged to eliminate junk food from their diet.

Last year, due to COVID, donations dropped by 79%.

So, in 2021, the 28th year of its commencement, Bowraville Senior Citizens are encouraging Bowraville residents to join them at the Folk Museum in an effort to make this a very special event.

Fire and Rescue NSW Nambucca Heads Station Open Day

By Rachel MCGREGOR-ALLEN ‘PREPARED for Anything’ is the mantra that the Fire and Rescue NSW Nambucca Heads Station adheres to, and the Open Day on Saturday 15 May at the Station demonstrated the preparedness and commitment of the local team.

By mid-morning on Saturday 15 May the Open Day had seen quite a few members of the public pass through the station and gather the available brochures.

Captain Robert Couchman and Deputy Captain Ricky Forbes both said that the station was always willing to open for children to have a look at the equipment, and for people to access fire safety information.

To do this the public is encouraged to phone the Station.

Captain Couchman said it is, “Important to have open dialogue with the community.”

The Station has four firefighters available to respond at all times.

Although the station itself may not always have staff present, the community can be safe in the knowledge

that there is always a team of responders ready to assist when needed.

According to Captain Couchman, Fire and Rescue NSW is always on the lookout for more firefighters to add to the ranks, especially those that are available for at least three days a week, Monday-Friday.

If there are people in the community who are interested in becoming a firefighter the best way to apply is to go to the Fire and Rescue NSW website at www.fire.nsw.go.au.

Captain Couchman has this message for all members of the

community, “Moving onto the winter months we are really focusing on winter fire safety, getting your home prepared for winter.

“Making sure that if you’re getting your fireplace fired up again for the first time you’ve got a clean flue, a clean chimney.

“That is one of the more common types of fire that will start in the house through winter.

“Making sure that your heaters have been serviced and are up to date.

“And making sure that people have nothing nearer than a metre to a heater, to prevent anything catching fire.

“It’s really important that everyone in the home understands

this, understands their home escape plans.

“And all the smoke alarms are up to date, serviced, with fresh batteries and installed properly.”

Captain Couchman said that owing to the lack of a local paper in the months leading up to the Open Day, advertising the event was more difficult than usual, so the team was expecting fewer visitors than usual.

The Open Day is held once a year, although last year’s event was not able to be held because of COVID. COVID-Safe practices were carried out at the event, with all visitors required to sign in and the usual activities scaled back.

Ollie on the road to recovery after stroke

EIGHT-year-old Macksville boy Oliver Hawes was ready to devour his lunch over the Easter long weekend whilst visiting family when his mother Helen Hawes, an enrolled nurse, noticed he wasn’t himself.

Ollie had started eating his sausage for lunch when he asked for some sauce.

As he stood to go and look for it, Helen noticed his face had drooped, a classic sign of a stroke.

“I took the sausage off him and said, ‘What is going on?’

“He wasn’t very clear when he answered me, but he did manage to say.”

“My hand feels funny.

“My first reaction was he is having a stroke, I was in disbelief though as you only imagine ‘oldies’ and smokers having them.”

Oliver was rushed to the closest hospital and then transferred to Sydney’s Westmead Children’s Hospital where he underwent numerous scans and tests.

It was then that

Ollie was diagnosed with ‘Moyamoya’, a rare progressive disorder that affects the blood vessels in the brain.

It is characterized by the narrowing of the carotid artery inside the skull, causing an inadequate supply of blood leading to

reduced oxygen delivered to the brain.

“The doctors could see the vessel was narrow and the blood flow was there,” Ms Hawes said.

“They were planning on an angiogram in the coming days to investigate how narrow it was and make a plan from there as the neurosurgery is a last resort.”

Ollie had a major stroke that night and

immediate bypass neurosurgery was required.

He spent the next nine days in intensive care.

The stroke affected the movement of Ollie's right side and he also lost his speech.

WHILE The road to recovery is going to be a long one for Ollie, Ms Hawes told News Of The Area, “Ollie is smashing his goals.

“He started walking without assistance.

“He has attempted soccer and running, he is like Bambi, and has given me several heart attacks over the weekend as I feared he would fall and hit his head.”

Whilst many words are now popping into Ollie's brain, he is still struggling to remember what he is trying to say and which order to put his words into.

“The highlight of Ollie’s week was to take a trip to the hospital school classroom,” Ms Hawes said.

“He loved it!”

“There were no warning

signs,” Ms Hawes said of the time before Ollie's diagnosis.

“People need to be aware children have strokes too.”

Exciting new program benefiting the youth and seniors in the Nambucca Valley

YOUNGSTER.CO is a new program supported by the State Library, providing benefits to young and old in the Nambucca Valley.

Co-founder, Tony Rothacker told News Of The Area, “This program was developed to help the youth of our area utilise the skills they have.”

With so many of our youth heavily involved with technology, and potentially lacking vital social skills, and so many seniors in the community struggling to keep

up with the rapid changes in technology, this was the perfect opportunity to combine the two generations.

With the initial launch of this program consisting of group settings, it was discovered early in the piece

that it was more beneficial to the seniors if they were given one-on-one sessions with a Youngster ‘mentor’ to

guide them through the new technology changes.

“The Youngsters help the seniors send emails, read messages on their phones from family members, and even help do things like applying for the Dine and Discover vouchers, through Services NSW,” Mr Rothacker said.

This program has seen dual benefits.

While the seniors have learnt how to navigate technology, the Youngsters have also learned important life skills from the seniors.

“They have learnt to

communicate, slow down when they explain things and to be patient,” Mr Rothacker noted.

The Youngster program is running at the Macksville Library on Fridays from 11:00am- 1:00pm and the Nambucca Heads library on Saturdays 9:30am-11:30am.

Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club Weekly Report

ANOTHER week of on again/ off again golf with two lots of rain during the week forcing cancellation of Tuesday, Thursday and Friday events.

While many golfers are feeling very frustrated, just put yourself in our greenkeeper’s shoes.

Despite the odds, Greg and his team are working small miracles around the course, with reseeding and the use of the verti drain machine to aerate the fairways – this should allow air to circulate, helping to dry out the fairways.

The Ladies were lucky to get a 9 Hole Medley Stableford game played on Wednesday 12 May. Jennifer Johnston (25) won Division 1 with 17 points from Lisa Urquhart (27) with 16 points.

Division 2 Winner was Peta Giddey (38) with 16 points from Linda Piccin (41) with 15 points.

Other good scores from Marilyn McNally 16, Maxine Townsend and Dianne O’Leary both with 15.

NTPs on the 5th went to Kerry Naylor and Dorothy Bunyan.

The Medley Stableford

scheduled for Thursday and the Haval Island Challenge on Friday were cancelled following a drenching of 24 mm on the course on Wednesday evening, Return of good weather enabled the course to recover sufficiently to enable us to schedule a Medley Single Stableford on Saturday 15 May – the scheduled Men’s 2 Person Ambrose was deferred until Saturday 28 May. 61 players in 2 Divisions enjoyed great sunny Autumn weather, with golf carts and scooters permitted on course.

It’s been a tough start for the under 13s Stingers who are seeking their first win, but their spirits remain high as they keep improving under the watchful eye of coach Paul Rogers.

“The floods have made it difficult and we have a team of mixed age groups, so we are still looking for our first win.

“The team is getting better every week and they are enjoying their football, everyone is having fun and developing their game which is what it’s all about.

"The game was played in good spirit and I’m really proud of the team's effort on Saturday.

Tennis siblings taking their game to the next level

TENNIS playing siblings, Lydia, Seth and Jesse Reinhardt from Nambucca Heads travelled down to Port Macquarie recently to compete in their first Junior UTR Series (JUS).

The event is the next

step for players seeking to improve their game by gaining experience against players from other regions.

The siblings told their coach they had a “wonderful time”.

Tennis coach and venue host, Greg Alchin, said, “About 60 children participated, with under 8s and under 10s combined, under 10 boys and divisions one through five.

“The day was a big success, we had players from Forster through to Coffs Harbour competing for the trophies and points race to make it to Champion of Champions in August.

“A JUS is a really good learning curve for children entering competition tennis, they get to experience playing new kids and travelling to a new place,” said Greg.

playing AFL and the lad was a natural, if you saw how he played, you’d be scratching your head in confusion after hearing that he didn’t know what a mark was at the very start of the game!

Aaron Clarke’s return from injury was a boost for the club, looking comfortable in the full forward position and ending the day bagging 4 goals.

The lads travel to Casino next weekend to take on the Casino Lions, which should be a cracking game of footy with both sides keen for their first win of the season and for bragging rights on who is the stronger pride. Go NV Lions!

Tough loss for the Nambucca Valley Lions

SATURDAY 15 May, saw the Nambucca Valley Lions host the Northern Beaches Blues for their third game of the season at E.J Biffon Sports ground.

Despite the rain earlier in the week, keeping the ground wet and muddy, it was a spectacular day for footy and the spectators were treated to a great game from both sides.

The Lions fought hard all game, but ultimately the Blues won the day, 10.6 (66) - 5.4 (34).

Even though this was another loss for the Lions, the boys have hit a turning point.

Compared to their first couple of games, today there was a significant difference in the Lions gameplay, the lads looked sharper, fitness issues now slowly becoming a distant memory, they were hitting their targets more frequently, backing each other up and making smarter plays and they can put that down to their consistent hard work at training.

Entering first grade for the first time in 10 years was always going to be a tough nut for the Lions to crack but the determination they showed today proves the boys are committed and learning, they are starting to gel together

Ride Around The River to return in 2021

FOLLOWING its postponement in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Macksville Cycle Club’s annual Ride Around The River (RATR) is set for a big return in 2021.

For the past six years the RTAR has become a welcome fixture on the regional cycling calendar, being the only event of its type on the Mid North Coast.

“The ride this year is scheduled for 19 September and we are hoping that the large numbers of riders attracted to this event in past year will be back to enjoy the challenging cycling of the Nambucca Valley,” said

Peter Joyce, President of the Macksville Cycle Club.

The RTAR isn’t the only exciting event on the Cycle Club calendar in 2021.

Over the past couple of years there has been an explosion in the popularity of riding bikes on dirt/gravel roads.

This gravel riding encouraged the Macksville Cycle Club to organize a ‘gravel’ cycling event called the Dirty Bluff, which took place on the roads around Eungai and Tamban on Sunday 2 May 2021 Although the weather forecast wasn’t ideal for cycling, a group of 70 riders

took on the first Dirty Buff.

The overnight rain kept the dust down and the roads hard packed.

“The quickest riders on the day for the premier 50km route were Kerrod Parker of Coffs Harbour in a time of 1.38.20, the quickest local being Greg Cadecott at 1.44.18, second across the finish,” said Mr Joyce.

“While the women’s field was not as large the riding was pretty competitive with Kerry Westwood of Coffs Harbour coming home first in 2.21.18 just ahead of the first local Virginia Joyce with a time of 2.22.20.”

q Riders took on wet gravel roads in the first Dirty Bluff road cycling event.

q The Dirty Bluff took place on Sunday 2 May 2021. enjoyed the ride, several families took on the challenge along with a pair of adaptive cyclists with their off road hand cycles.

Riders travelling as far afield as Sydney joining the ride, the first event of its type in the region.

“Rider feedback was overwhelmingly positive so the Macksville CC are looking forward to next years edition!” said Mr Joyce.

“A big shout out to the Eungai and Tamban community for making the ride feel welcome in their area.”

Sunday’s event was clean and clear, but chilly conditions were felt by all.

With the Loggerheads event on the same day, the Scotts Head Boardriders were set up a little further up the beach.

Spectators enjoyed clean off shore autumn waves at around the one metre mark.

It was a great day to utilise multiple banks from the Scotts Head Youth Centre bank down into Scotts Point for the MicroGroms.

Club Treasurer Stacey Munro told News Of The Area, “The Autumn/Winter season showcases the crisp mornings as well as the clean conditions optimal for surfing.”

Interestingly, tonight’s guest may be a name many have never heard of but it will be one they remember after hearing his compelling story. Tonight, ChineseAustralian ballet dancer Li Cunxin (above) sits down for an expansive chat about his extraordinary life. Better known as “Mao’s Last Dancer”, Cunxin overcame severe poverty in communist China to become a star on the world ballet stage.

Now more than halfway through season five (after tonight, there are only three episodes to gorge on), the shenanigans in small-town Whyhope are as fun and diverting as ever.

THE Scotts Head Boardriders completed another successful monthly event on May16 held at Scotts Head Beach.

The event's heats ranged from the MicroGroms to the Open Men’s and Women’s.

The participants challenged the ocean and themselves on the day.

The Scotts Head Boardriders run in conjunction with Surfing Australia and recognises club surfing as the grassroots of where Australian surfing begins.

This Club originally began as the Nambucca Valley Boardriders and as the decades have passed the club name has changed to the Scotts Head Boardriders.

Even though the name says Scotts Head, the club isn’t exclusive to Scotts Head surfers.

In recent years, they have welcomed surfers from Valla, Urunga, Nambucca and Sawtell to the shores of Scotts Head.

“We are a strong and proud family Club with a focus on building great friendships and supporting our local community.
