By Karen GRIBBIN THE Bowraville community came out in numbers for the Lanes Bridge Tree Planting and Information Day, to help combat the massive bank erosion the Nambucca River has experienced due to bush fires and flooding events.

The focus of the project is to revegetate degraded riverbank for stabilisation; areas where the tree canopy has been removed makes for erosion and exotic weed infiltration.

Project organiser Logan Zingius, a Landcare Project Officer, said, “The river regeneration is primarily the most important part of the catchment, it affects every aspect of the system, most

NATIONAL Reconciliation Week (NRW) 2022 runs from Friday 27 May to 3 June 2022.

The theme this year is ‘Be Brave. Make Change’.

Reconciliation Australia’s website explains that the theme, “Is a challenge to all Australians - individuals, families, communities, organisations and government - to be brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can make change for the benefit of all Australians.”

The NRW poster for the year was illustrated by Tori-Jay Mordey, a Torres Strait Islander, and shows some of the different faces that make up Australia, working for a just and equal society.

Within the Nambucca Valley, the Saltwater Freshwater Festival is being held on Saturday 28 May during National Reconciliation Week.

At Earthbound Bowra Cafe in Nambucca Heads, ‘Reconciliation Hands’ will be available for purchase to add to a display on the front window with all monies raised going to Reconciliation Australia.

Schools throughout the country will be talking with

anniversary of the tabling in the Australian Parliament of the ‘Bringing Them Home’ report.

This report detailed the forced removal, under laws enacted

by Australian governments, of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families.

Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week 2022 students about National Reconciliation Week.

Examples of what will be happening in education are demonstrated in plans for the week at Valla Community Preschool.

At Valla, children will be engaged in a range of activities, including sharing a story called ‘Say Yes’, and learning about what it means to be brave.

“The removal of woody debris and the lowering of the river bed (gravel mining) has made for a faster flowing river.

“During flooding events the waterways are like pipes to store water, without woody debris the river flow is not slowed, combine this with a lower river bed, causing higher river banks, the river naturally cuts out the banks and causes bank erosion, instead of flowing over the banks and into paddocks.”

Regeneration projects like these usually take about ten to fifteen years to complete.

Volunteer Pierre Wilkinson said, “There’s a good number of volunteers today, I just potter along with the planting now that I’ve retired.

“I used to work in land regeneration and today we’ll be planting for top bank revegetation.”

There were approximately sixteen

volunteers on hand to help with the planting of 700 trees.

Alan Kaali is a nurseryman with a passion for native plants and has grown most of the plants from local seeds for the project.

“Today we’ll be planting about 700 trees, 300 Lamandras bank stabilisation plants, and the rest are keystone species like Water housia (Weeping Lilly Pilly), and nitrogen fixing Snow Wood Mimosaceae.”

Election Day Arrives As Cowper Candidates Make Their Final Pitches

Mr Conaghan has pointed to his record of providing key funding for major projects in the electorate.

With cost of living and affordable housing major issues in the electorate, Mr Conaghan has highlighted the Prime Minister’s recent announcement of first home buyers being able to access their superannuation to buy a house.

Conaghan said he is committed to strengthening the economy to deliver more jobs, tackling cost of

living pressures, greater investment in regional infrastructure, building a better health system and bringing back manufacturing to Australia.

Labor candidate Keith McMullen wants improved access to affordable housing, world-class health services and more secure jobs on the Coffs Coast, as well as better access to TAFE and a rise in the minimum wage.

Mr McMullen said Labor will provide $700,000 for additional crisis accommodation on the Mid North Coast for women and children fleeing violence.

Mr McMullen said he

is taking climate change seriously, pointing to Labor’s Powering Australia strategy to reduce Australia’s emissions by 43 percent by 2030, and keep the country on track for net zero by 2050.

Labor says it will invest up to $200 million per year on disaster prevention and resilience and will establish a National Water Commission as part of the strategy to future-proof Australia’s water resources.

Timothy Nott said a Greens vote in Cowper is a vote for real action on climate change.

“We will decrease our

reliance on fossil fuels while creating certainty for business.”

“We will encourage construction and agriculture courses added to our free TAFE and university policy and we will empower First Nations people and ensure policy is designed for community before profit.

"I want the government to be transparent and protect the vulnerable,” Mr Nott said.

He added that the Great Koala National Park is one of the exciting initiatives the Greens are supporting to grow jobs in Cowper.

Mr Nott said, “I want all

residents to have secure accommodation, to be able to learn, work and afford to stay in Cowper.”

Independent candidates have attracted much interest across the country, with Ms Heise’s campaign featured on Australian Story last Monday evening.

Ms Heise says she wants to bring respect and integrity back to Federal Parliament and wants real action on climate and health.

She says that her approach is very simple – she views any legislation through the lens of its current and future benefit

for the people of Cowper, its fairness and its affordability.

Issues such as the cost of living, affordable housing and response to disasters are high on her agenda.

Ms Heise stresses she is not beholden to political parties or donors, just the people in her electorate.

The Labor, Greens and Independent candidates all support the establishment of a federal Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) and have a commitment to Net Zero emissions by, at least, 2050.

Bellinger River Agricultural Society President Gillian Anderson told News Of The Area, “Due to the condition of the showground after the recent floods and continued rain, and the high risk of injury to riders and horses, the horse events have been postponed to later in the year.

“The cattle section will be greatly reduced, although still a great event, with fifteen head of cattle being presented by Bellingen High School students for judging on Saturday.

“The Showman's Guild are unable to bring any rides to our Show this year as they cannot afford the insurance.”

Trade and food stalls will be available as usual.

“We will still have some great events at the Show,” said Gillian.

“Our main pavilion will be full of entries, the Mantova Art Show and photography will be on display, and our new venture the Artisan Tent will be hosting demonstrations of crafts throughout the weekend.

“Come along and see how potters and ceramicists, weavers, spinners,

painting, the petting zoo and Steve's reptile world, as well as some new entertainment with hula hoops and giant bubbles.

The schools and other local groups will be performing in the entertainment tent, along with a diversity of musical ensembles.

Back Track Dogs will perform on Saturday afternoon, “and of course, there is our iconic Mongrel Dog Show on Sunday''.

The Fun Run is still on Sunday morning but a decision about the Woodchop, the Partner Carrying and the Young Farmer Challenge will be made closer to the weekend based on how much more rain falls and the condition of the ground.

Gillian assures, “Our first concern has to be for the safety of our competitors.”

At this stage it is unlikely that the Black Street paddock will be fit for parking.

Mayor pays tribute to local volunteers

By Susan KONTIC NATIONAL Volunteer Week is held across Australia each year to give communities the opportunity to acknowledge and thank that huge army of people who give their time, energy and expertise, along with a big share of their emotions, to ease the load of their fellow citizens and boost their local areas.

As National Volunteer Week 2022 draws to a close, it’s timely to ask ourselves: where would be without the volunteers among us?

When News Of The Area put that question to Nambucca Valley Mayor Cr Rhonda Hoban OAM, she expressed her admiration and appreciation with an insight into some of the community activities we enjoy thanks to the work of volunteers.

“If you look around the Nambucca Valley, most of the facilities and events we all enjoy are only there because of a long history of volunteering,” Mayor Hoban

said.

“From the big-ticket infrastructure like the Hospital, the Showground and the Macksville Aquatic Centre to our public halls, sporting facilities, parks, gardens, museums and more, volunteers have been responsible for the vision, raising funds and in many cases the care, control and management of many of our community facilities.

“We can all enjoy art, music and theatre and participate in sport and a range of physical activities.

“There is an enormous range of volunteer-run clubs and interest groups where you can learn a craft or a new skill and there are service organisations and individuals who do everything from cleaning public BBQs to providing community transport or meals for the aged.

“Volunteers are also responsible for many of our community events that not only provide fun and entertainment for locals, but also bring visitors to spend their dollars and support our local businesses.”

Mayor Hoban said it wasn’t until becoming a Councillor that she realised just how much volunteers give to this community.

“People say you can’t put a value on volunteering, but I once tried to do just that.

“I went through the Shire Guide and counted up all of the listed volunteer organisations that look after Council-owned facilities.

“I then attributed an estimate of hours and a basic Council labourer’s

wage and realised that if all of our volunteers retired the Council would be facing a rate increase of around 30 percent to pay someone to do the things they do free of charge.

“And that was only

Council-owned facilities.

“We are not a wealthy community but we are rich in community spirit and volunteers are the glue that holds us all together,” Mayor Hoban said.

q This group of local volunteers started and now run the Croquet Club – they prepared the grounds and have raised funds and obtained grants for facilities and equipment.

q At the new hospital, the Mayor unveils a plaque that is dedicated to all the volunteers who for decades have raised funds to support the hospital and improve the lives of both patients and staff.

Free Mental Health awareness information parents, carers and those associated with youth to a free night Calling information night on mental health awareness

TIME2TALK is calling on all parents, carers and anyone associated with youth in the Nambucca Valley to attend a free Information Night to develop mental health awareness and to learn where to find help when they need it.

The Information Night will be held at Nambucca RSL Club on May 26 from 6pm to 9pm, with light refreshments provided by the Club.

Time2Talk is a not-forprofit volunteer organisation – it’s full name Time2Talk Nambucca Valley in support

of Nambucca Valley RUOK? – established by five local parents: Danny Doolan (President), Elisse Chapman from Uniting Youth Services (Treasurer), Corinne Luffman, Gemma Rostron and Minna Pritchard, all of whom have been personally affected by mental health concerns in some way.

Mental health statistics provided by Lifeline for people living in northern NSW are disturbing, and particularly so in some of the categories that affect our community.

Gemma Rostron explained that parents and carers in Nambucca Valley have difficulty knowing where to find help for their children when they’re suffering with mental health problems.

It often takes weeks for them to negotiate appointments with a GP then referral to a specialist when what they really need is urgent help.

Time2Talk is about opening doors to organisations that can help with access to advice, support and courses of action.

The Information Night on May 26 will be the first step in providing practical information to assist parents and carers to help their young people.

Leading mental health services that will be in attendance at the information night include: Lifeline, headspace, GenHealth, Wesley Mission, Uniting Youth Services, New Horizons, Divine Soul Centre (sound healing, natural healers and therapists), Connective Fitness (Macksville), and Nambucca Youthie (Nambucca Youth

Services).

Guest speakers Miranda Cull and Naydene from headspace and GenHealth will provide information on how to seek immediate assistance for youth in crisis, and on the referral system.

Liz Yebek from Lifeline will outline the do's and don'ts of speaking to youth in crisis, Lifeline numbers and statistics, as well as counselling workshops.

Mental Health First Aid Certificates for Carers

ON Tuesday 3 May, members of the Nambucca Heads ‘Everlasting Carers’ Support Group received their Mental Health First Aid Certificates.

The Carers attended a four-week program facilitated by Mark McGrath, a Mental Health Liaison Officer for the Carers Gateway Program and Carers NSW. Each year one in five Australians will experience a mental health illness.

Attendee Megan Smith said, “I wish I knew this stuff before my son got into trouble.”

Carers taking part in the program were or have been carers of someone with a mental illness, or wanting to develop strategies for their own self care.

“I have a better understanding of addiction

All participants felt the program gave them a better understanding of the options available to them, and new strategies moving forward with their own self-care.

158 arrests made in domestic violence operation POLICE have conducted more than 8000 proactive compliance checks on domestic violence offenders and made 158 arrests during a state-wide operation focusing on reducing domestic and family violence incidents.

Agriculture Matters Workshops

IN the recent school holidays 65 students from various schools within the Nambucca Valley converged on Bowraville Central School for a unique learning experience.

The ‘Agriculture Matters Youth Workshop’ was developed by the NSW Farmers Nambucca River Branch to give local students an insight into the local agricultural industry and the strong role it plays in our local economy and environment.

“The hands-on practical day gave students the opportunity to look at and experience a range of agribusiness enterprises and practical skills,” said Megan Cochrane, Community Liaison Officer, Bowraville Central School.

Students were treated with a farm visit to Barru Working Kelpies.

Owners Scott and Trish Armon gave the students insights into how they successfully farm 100 acres to produce an income capable of

supporting themselves.

The students were shown the basics of working dog training and livestock handling techniques.

One of the highlights of course was watching the twelve-week-old kelpie pups demonstrate their instinct and q Scott Armon of Barru Working Kelpies.

In the afternoon students took part in two workshops.

Steve and Trudi from Little Star Bee Sanctuary gave students the opportunity to taste a variety of local honeys.

They explained the importance of both native and European bees in the pollination and production of agricultural products.

Students then tried their hand at making beeswax candles.

Woodstock in the Valley - mud stops play

THE promise of mud brought on the postponement of yet another entertainment event.

This time it’s Woodstock in the Valley…postponed for the third time.

“Mother Nature has certainly got the upper hand causing yet another postponement of the Woodstock in the Valley festival,” Diane Potter, Project Manager with Nambucca Rotary, told News Of The Area.

After a week of constant monitoring and review following higher than predicted rainfall, the committee, which includes the festival organisers and Rotary, decided the grounds would pose too great a risk for their teams, crew and the public if the show was to go on.

“The festival was due to be held at the Macksville Showground on Saturday 14 May showcasing thirteen music bands from near and far.”

With 110 campsites booked and people travelling from QLD, ACT, Sydney, the Hunter Valley and country NSW, the festival was shaping up to be a huge success.

The festival organiser said everybody was extremely disappointed that they had come so close after the festival

had already been postponed on two previous occasions due to COVID-19.

“The team will regroup within the next couple of weeks to determine how to move forward with a new date,” said Diane.

“Ticket holders are able to request a refund by going to the ticketing site however many have chosen to hold

onto their tickets to await a new date.”

Refunds will continue to be available after the new date is announced to accommodate those who can’t attend the new date.

The festival organiser said everybody has been very understanding and for that she is extremely grateful.

LIFELINE North Coast is encouraging people to push for better mental health by participating in Australia’s largest fitness-based mental health initiative, The PushUp Challenge, which starts on Wednesday 1 June and runs until 24 June.

“We wish to encourage locals to sign up for this challenge,” Angela Martin, Communications and Community Engagement Manager, Lifeline North Coast, told News Of The Area.

It is free to register, and there is an opportunity to raise much needed donations for Lifeline North Coast.

This is one of the biggest cattle sales of the year for the region.

Jack and Jesse Stanton of GK Kennedy & Co put together a penning of 928 steers and heifers.

This was over 100 more than they were expecting, despite muddy conditions making cattle transport a challenge.

Open Letter Calling for Urgent Action on Housing COUNCILS in NSW are so concerned at the worsening housing crisis they have issued an open letter to all Federal Election candidates, calling on them to commit to a four-point plan.

Local Government NSW (LGNSW) President Darriea Turley AM said the state’s 128 councils were asking candidates for: - Substantial federal investment to deliver an additional 5,000 social housing dwellings per year, for the next decade - Investment in a far greater supply of affordable rental housing, for

hardworking Australians increasingly facing housing insecurity - A plan to improve rates of home ownership without supercharging demand and contributing to even higher household debt and worsened affordability, and - A Royal Commission into the affordability and future of housing in Australia.

“Councils continue to see low- and middle-income workers being priced out of local housing,” Cr Turley said.

“This is as true in the regions as in metropolitan

areas.

“Intergenerational inequality is growing dramatically, with young people and families finding it impossible to reach even the first rung of the housing ladder.

“There has been a continued fall in home ownership rates since the mid-1990s, as house prices soar and more and more people are forced into an increasingly unaffordable rental market.

“The knock-on effect has driven homelessness to unprecedented levels.

“And yet all we are

hearing is the same old simplistic, developer-driven approach: cut red tape and increase supply.

“That approach hasn’t worked in the last ten years and it won’t work now.”

Cr Turley said housing affordability was mainly driven by factors beyond the scope of state and local planning systems: financial and taxation systems, population growth and interest rates.

“Interest rates may be beyond the control of the Federal Government but tax reform and population growth is not,” she said.

“Relying on the same old responses will deliver the same old results – that’s how we got to where we are now.

“Communities are sick and tired of buck passing on this fundamental issue and want real action and leadership.”

Cr Turley said local government was committed to working collaboratively with the government to tackle and address the housing crisis.

“We see firsthand the impact of the housing crisis on our communities, and know better than anyone the severity of the situation.

“Chronic underfunding of social housing is worsening the impact of rising housing and rental stress, especially in the regions.

“Right now, there are more than 50,000 people on the social housing waitlist across NSW. “There is an urgent need to address this issue proactively, and to tackle the underlying causes that are fundamental to real change.

“We’re asking every single candidate, irrespective of political allegiance, to step up and speak up by pledging their support for solutions that will deliver real results.”

Baby Photo Competition Winners Announced

ZENY’S House of Photography has completed its annual charity Baby Photo Competition.

All proceeds from the competition this year will be donated to the Nambucca Heads Everlasting Carers Support Group.

This year there was

$700.00 raised, composed of a $5.00 donation from every entrance fee of $25.00 or $10.00 from those getting a $65.00 package, alongside community votes and donations.

‘Changing Directions’ on display at Stringer Gallery ‘CHANGING Directions’, an exhibition of works from Nambucca artist Lorraine Francis, is on display at the Stringer Gallery, Nambucca Heads from Tuesday 31 May to Saturday 2 July.

Lorraine will present a vibrant display of twodimensional works on canvas and board, depicting a variety of subjects.

Featuring abstracts, landscapes, fauna and collage; ‘Changing Directions’ will showcase a new direction in her art practice.

“Recently, Lorraine has immersed herself in the manipulation of collage in her acrylic paintings,” said Peta Coe, Nambucca Valley Arts Council (NVAC).

Preferring to work in acrylics, Lorraine attests that she loves the medium for the vivid colours and fast drying characteristics, which are a hallmark of this type of paint.

It has enabled her to work quickly without anticipating the final result.

Such unrestrained freedom of expression is apparent in the spontaneity and wonderful freshness of her work.

“It is quite remarkable to think that Lorraine has really only been painting for about fifteen years, when one sees how accomplished her work is,” Peta said.

“However, as she has always been a successful creative in a variety of other ways: acting, singing in choirs and as a soloist,

training children's choirs and escorting them around the world, developing choreography, etc., we should not be surprised by her latest achievements,” Peta said, Lorraine approaches her painting with much energy and drive, working virtually every day in her studio at Nambucca and always has works on display at the Stringer Gallery.

Her works are often to be discovered at the Nexus Gallery in Bellingen as well, where she has been a longtime member.

“She has delightful variety and diversity in her creative practice and has investigated all painting genres.

“Collage though is what has particularly inspired her of late,” Peta said.

When asked about what drives her, Lorraine was quick to respond, “The thing is, when you have to paint, you have to paint, you need to paint!”

A multi-award winning and prolific artist, Lorraine’s beautifully resolved works are bound to inspire.

Concurrently, another featured exhibition is also soon to be installed at the Stringer Gallery.

It is a members’ show entitled ‘Abstraction’.

“It is always exciting to see what our artists have been working on.

“This exhibition will no doubt complement Lorraine’s exhibition well.

“Prepare to be surprised!”

Bowraville Central School Cattle Team

BOWRAVILLE Central School’s Cattle Team has competed in two shows over the last month.

The team achieved outstanding results at the Wauchope Show with two firsts and a second place.

Gabby Stadhams took out first place in the 16 and over parader category, with Charlee Woods taking second place.

Toria Kete was first in the 15 and under parader category.

Makaylah Scatzman, competing in her first ever show, performed extremely well, showing that she is not only a hard worker but a fast learner as well.

The Macksville Show saw Bowraville Central enter the largest Cattle Team, parading the greatest number of cows.

The new team uniforms were commented on throughout the day by members of the public, breeders and the other competing teams.

Of the fourteen students at the show, twelve were new to the team, and to cattle parading this year.

Volunteer of the Faulty Towers comes to Macksville Year Awards

CELEBRATE the Nambucca Valley’s most outstanding volunteers with nominations for the 2022 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards now open.

Minister for Families and Communities and Minister for Disability Services Natasha MaclarenJones said the awards are an important way to thank volunteers for their invaluable contribution to our state.

“After volunteers have given their time to help communities through bushfires, COVID-19 and floods, it is time to give them the recognition they deserve,” Mrs MaclarenJones said.

“The important work volunteers do may often go unnoticed but these awards are just one way we can say thank you for their hard work.

The awards, now in their sixteenth year, are run by the Centre for Volunteering.

The Centre's CEO Gemma Rygate says the awards are a way to thank,

recognise and celebrate the efforts of the state’s four million volunteers.

“It’s National Volunteer Week, so there’s no better time to say thank you to people who give their time to make their communities stronger right across NSW,” Ms Rygate said.

FOR the first time ever, The Faulty Towers Dining Experience is coming to Macksville.

The Macksville ex-Services Club, on Friday June 3, will be the host to an interactive theatrical event where the audience is immersed in the insanity and hilarious antics of Basil Faulty, his long suffering wife Sybil, and the ‘dunderhead’ restaurant waiter Manuel.

Attendees will also enjoy a fine, three-course English themed meal.

Guests are greeted on arrival by the acclaimed actors who usher them in and sit them down while bickering among themselves, correcting one another and trying to outdo each other.

This sets the scene for what’s ahead, but the audience are in no way prepared for the ensuing chaos.

Event promoters John Logan Entertainment say it is a night unlike any other.

“I’ve done a lot of shows but this one is the funniest one I have ever been involved with,”

POOR weather in the days leading up to the 2022 Bellingen Show saw the cancellation of many outdoor events, but the EJ Mantova Memorial Art Competition went ahead as planned, and while the sun didn’t shine as brightly as hoped, the standard of entries certainly lit up the pavilion.

MACKSVILLE local Simon Walker has secured employment at Macksville Country Club maintaining the greens, thanks to graduating with a Certificate III in Sports Turf Management from TAFE NSW Kurri Kurri.

Simon decided to pursue sports turf management to harness a career maintaining golf courses and bowling greens for the love of sport.

“I was attracted to the field because of the outdoor lifestyle,” said Simon.

“The top greenkeepers get to maintain the grounds that so many history making clashes are held on and a lot of those top greenkeepers are TAFE NSW graduates.

“Most places these days won’t hire you without a trade certificate, so TAFE NSW was an essential stepping-stone to learn the skills I needed and get those qualifications.”

Along with fellow graduates Adam Lewis, who is now Sydney Cricket Ground Curator and groundsman, and Josh Edwards, who maintains the revered turf of Stadium Australia, Simon is an inspiration to the next generation of greenkeepers who have hit the lawns at TAFE NSW Kurri Kurri ready to learn how to prepare world class sporting fields.

This year has seen the highest intake of sports turf management enrolments on record with some fifty students descending onto campus last month to commence practical training.

Graduates of the TAFE NSW Certificate III in Sports Turf Management are highly sought after by leading sports turf venues throughout the country.

World-class sporting teams rely on the niche skills that are required to prepare a pitch that will either make or break a game.

AT the Island Golf Club we do not seem to be able to get a break from the continual rainfall.

I can report that thirty seven brave souls completed the course on Tuesday and only eleven ladies finished on Wednesday.

Following further rainfall overnight on Wednesday the course was closed on Thursday morning and remained closed through the

week-end.

We are longing for some drying conditions in order to get back out there ASAP. We thank Ingenia White Albatross for their sponsorship of our Tuesday Stableford Event.

Due to the very heavy playing conditions scores were not brilliant and due to limited numbers the competition was played in one division only.

Neil Duffus seemingly was not deterred however and returned a score of 34 points to win the day.

THE Orara Valley Axemen and Grafton Ghosts have both continued their unbeaten starts to the season during the latest round of the Tooheys New Group 2 Rugby League season.

The Grafton Ghosts sit at the top of the ladder with three straight wins to start the season after a 30-18 win against the Coffs Harbour Comets at Geoff King Motors Oval.

The Orara Valley Axemen won their second match in a row to start the season crushing the Nambucca Roosters 56-0 in Nambucca

Donald had nose bent out of joint THE Benders were pioneering banana growers in north-east NSW. Brian was the patriarch of the Bender family and when he died, he left his share of the plantations, and commercial properties to his children George and Isobel.

George and Isobel continued the tradition and became key members of the Bender business.

Isobel loved the life so much she was married underneath a banana tree, and in a few short years she had three beautiful children.

Unfortunately, Isobel was tragically killed in an ice-skating accident while on holidays in Florida.

When her husband Donald read her will, he was confident that Isobel’s share in the farm and commercial properties would be able to support him and the children, as he received the whole of her estate.

However, the solicitor informed Donald that the farming land and the commercial properties were left to George and Isobel as joint tenants and if one tenant dies, the other tenant inherits the property.

In this case George would become the sole owner.

George, who loved his sister, but was not so keen on Donald, wanted to support his young nieces and nephew, so he deposited $300,000 in trust for each child.

Nevertheless, Donald was upset and wanted to contest the will, as he believed he should receive Isobel’s share in the farm and commercial properties.

The only assets held by Isobel was an everyday bank account holding $5,000.

Donald would have been left with only $5,000 but as a prudent business operator, Isobel had a life insurance policy and under a Buy/Sell Agreement, Donald receives $1.5 million for Isobel’s share in the Bender business and decides not to contest the will.

George calls a Bender business meeting and asks their solicitor to detail how best to avoid these situations, as it is more economical and efficient to deal with these issues while parties are alive.

Independents Unpersuasive

DEAR News of the Area,

THE more I think about the teal independents who are standing in the Federal election, the more I find the case for them to be unpersuasive.

Establishing an Independent Commission Against Corruption is one of their major goals but if there is a change of government this will happen regardless of independents.

Independents may have a voice in parliament but not a direct voice within the government or the alternative government.

If they have the balance of power, they will have some power but only on the margins.

Where the two major parties are of the same mind, independents will have no power to change anything.

As well, independents can never aspire to a ministerial position where the opportunity to implement real change lies.

The position held by women such as Julia Gillard or Jacinda Adern would be closed and many of these independents are clearly talented women.

The teal independents are critical of the major parties in regard to action on climate, but it needs to be remembered that both of the major parties have had a leader who was seriously burned and

lost power directly due to their efforts in regard to the climate issue.

One of the leading parties put into legislation a serious and practical plan of action to reduce carbon in the atmosphere and it ended up costing them the government.

The political reality is that there are some electorates where a strong emphasis on climate policy means you will receive low poll numbers and stand no chance of election.

The electorates where independents do stand a chance of winning, in most cases already have a member of parliament committed to this issue and displacing them hardly seems like a step forward.

The Greens Party are also alarmed to see many supporters flock to independents who mostly lack the Greens’ environmental breadth, knowledge and experience beyond the issue of climate change.

Finally, if all members of parliament were elected as independents it would only be a matter of time before they coalesced into factions and parties.

If a group of independents are elected to this next parliament it is highly likely that they will work together and in effect be a party.

‘Greenie’ Aversion Syndrome DEAR News Of The Area,

WITH unprecedented floods and catastrophic fires, nature is screaming at us to take better care of the environment and to act on climate change.

So why is ‘greenie’ a term of abuse?

The Greens have detailed, practical policies on a wide range of issues, policies that have been carefully crafted over years and fully costed.

Yet with much media focus on personality pugilist politics, we seldom get to hear of them, and not many voters are

prepared to look up policies on parties' websites.

The Greens want to end native forest logging to protect ecosystems and habitat.

As we can meet our timber needs with sustainable plantations, this is reasonable. They do not want to prevent people clearing around their houses for fire hazard reduction.

The global demand for coal is set to fall.

To mitigate the effects of climate change, the Greens want to phase out coal and gas but that doesn't mean an end to all mining.

For both these industries, they advocate support for workers to make the transition to industries with a future.

I have one word for you.

Headphones.

Preferably not for the driver, who, in my opinion deserves preferential treatment and should be able to enjoy their playlist - a finely curated mix that allows them to go into a calm and possibly nostalgic state, therefore able to deal with lunatics overtaking on the inside lane, backseat arguments, and various other unwanted distractions.

If, however, you'd like to be a bit more democratic in the decision-making process, then it should be a playlist that alternates the tastes of each passenger.

What you are left with is an eclectic combination of songs that will keep you all happy for at least 25 percent of the journey, and gritting your teeth for the other 75 percent.

There is also the option of silence, or some gentle prodding about career aspirations (which will quickly lead to silence in my experience).

Without fail, though, a calm trip can be achieved if each car member has responsibility for their own listening enjoyment and this is where individual devices, though not ideal for communicating with each other, will ensure that you are all still on speaking terms when you arrive at your destination.

So why are they portrayed as looney treehuggers?

Greens' policies are guided by the ideal of what's best for Australians, not dictated by corporate donations.

The four pillars of the Greens are environmental sustainability, social justice, grassroots participatory democracy and peace and non-violence.

What's so unacceptably radical about that?

All Australians are proud of our beautiful land and its unique flora and fauna.

Can't one love trees and koalas without being condemned to the lunatic fringe?

SCOTT Morrison and his boys now say ‘they can change’.

Still they won’t commit to genuine climate crisis targets that scientists have been begging us to enforce to save our planet and us as a species.

78 percent of people say that this is the key issue for them this election.

The Coalition says the issue is the economy.

We the Cowper voters say they’re inter-related issues.

Throwing millions of dollars into mopping up disasters will be an endless economic drain exponentially and perpetually if we don’t address the cause.

We are now experiencing the climate crises scientists have been warning us of as early as 1965.

Scott Morrison and his team prefer to ignore the pleas of the people.

Nothing has changed therefore or will.

The Coalition has made itself and us in turn dependent on big business with vested interests.

The only way to change this perilous nightmare is to vote for a new government on Saturday.

If the Independants can hold the balance of power in the House of Representatives they can force real change through committed actions.

Do as I say, and not as I do doesn’t cut it anymore Scott.

It’s called double standards and hypocrisy.

The only way we will see real change I believe therefore is to vote for our Independent candidate Caz Heise tomorrow.

Every vote will be critical this Saturday and you have the power with your single vote to create the changes we have been calling for from the Coalition government.

By Adele MCCOLLOM, Nambucca Red Cross Moving Forward IN our April column we highlighted our activities in the flooded areas of NSW and the work by many in both Evacuation and Recovery Centres.

Mid North Coast teams have stepped up and been active in multiple activations in Evacuation and Recovery Centres these past few months.

Individual volunteers have been deployed further north to Byron Bay, Ballina, and Lismore areas.

Our Nambucca team was deployed to Evacuation Centres and pop-up Recovery Centres in Nambucca

Heads, Macksville and Urunga, supporting those in need as a result of the second wave of flooding in late March.

Grants Update At 5 pm on Thursday 21 April the Red Cross Flood Grant online portal closed, raising almost $40 million for our cash assistance program for people impacted by the floods in NSW and Queensland.

The Australia Unites Telethon, which was hosted by broadcasters Nine, Seven and Ten, raised $27.2 million.

Red Cross Acting Director of Australian Programs, Garry Page, said, “$20 million dollars had been distributed so far through approximately 40,000 grants, and an estimated 30,000 eligible applications will be processed in the coming days and weeks.”

Maria is based at the Kempsey office and was our guest speaker on 30 April at our team meeting.

We farewell a local Emergency Services Team Member for Red Cross, Lee Gilliland.

Lee joined the Nambucca Heads Team in 2018 and has been tireless in supporting Red Cross through floods, bush fires in Evacuation and Recovery Centres in NSW and Queensland.

Lee was awarded the prestigious National Emergency Medal due to her support in the Townsville floods in 2019 the and Black Summer Bushfires 20192020 which clearly reflected her dedication to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of so many communities in difficult times.

On paper, Keeping Faith revolves around a mother and lawyer in the Welsh countryside. Packed with ambivalence, secrets, moody landscapes and a histrionic soundtrack, tonight it’s back with its third and final season. By Andrea FERRARI IN ever more common rain-related news, the St. Patrick’s P&F Golf Day has been postponed to Sunday 21 August.

“With the weather at its worst, with rain, rain and more rain, we have changed the date, and just can’t wait to celebrate,” Carmen Kerr, from St Pat’s P&F committee told News Of The Area.

“Unfortunately, due to the inundation of rain, St. Patrick’s P&F Committee has had to postpone the inaugural Golf Day, moving it to Sunday 21 August, 2022.”

The event will be held in the same manner, commencing at 9am, with a 10am shotgun start.

Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club, along with the P&F Committee, have locked in August 21, hoping for more accommodating weather.

“The committee has also been planning internal games and little competitions to be held throughout the day such as a putting competition, a betting ring, a drone golf ball drop, longest drive comps, nearest to pin comps, and of course great prizes for the team that is dressed the best…fancy dress, themed teams, we hope imaginations run wild.

“We hope that everyone can join us at Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club on the rearranged date of Sunday 21 August.
