Possum Protection GROUPS across the Nambucca Valley have joined forces in support of our precious wildlife to remedy a drastic shortage of possum boxes.

There is an ongoing need for these boxes to provide substitute tree hollows for possums in care with WIRES that have either lost their habitat or been orphaned as joeys and are now ready for release.

Local WIRES volunteer Tina Birtles approached the Men’s Sheds of Macksville and Nambucca Heads for their assistance.

“The response was terrific and they immediately sprang into action and started work on 20 possum boxes,” said Mrs Birtles.

“We were delighted with the professional quality of the boxes and they were completed just at the right time, as our supply had recently run out – we are very grateful to Men’s Shed.”

On Friday 24 September a lucky community member from Nambucca Valley was the 1st prize winner of the Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot draw.

The total prize money was $200,000.

Such a large prize was last won at the Nambucca Heads Newsagency in 2019.

It is the first big win since owners Thea and Steve Kimber took over the newsagency late in 2020.

The newsagency staff and owners were excited to learn of the win.

Owner Steve Kimber told News Of The Area, “The person visited the store and picked up a claim form.

“I think we were more excited than they were.”

According to Mr Kimber, the winning lottery format used, “was originally founded by the New South Wales government to raise money for hospital and infrastructure funding - most notably providing funding for the iconic Sydney Opera House”.

Mr Kimber said, “We are very happy that in these times a local has had this fantastic opportunity and it was purchased at our store.”

The black cat can be viewed by some as unlucky, but Lucky the feline face of Lucky Lotteries was the complete opposite for a local on 24 September.

Upon receiving the news of winning, the lucky winner said, “Thank you very much, that’s incredible.”

When asked what would be done with the prize money they said, “I would say we will start by helping out the kids.

“We will really be able to enjoy it, there’s no doubt about that.”

Suicide is the leading cause of death amongst Australians aged 15-44, and 60% of Australians that report symptoms of mental illness do not seek help (figures from Black Dog Institute).

With funds raised from ‘One Foot Forward’, the aim is to conduct research into early detection, prevention and treatment of common mental health disorders.

THE NSW Government and NSW Farmers have launched a free workplace safety program.

The Work Health and Safety (WHS) program will provide education and advice to the agricultural industry to reduce farm related death, injury and disease.

Kevin Anderson, Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation said the NSW Government has invested $2 million over four years for the Farm Safety Advisory Program to support farming businesses in developing an effective work health and safety culture and keeping workers safe.

“This $2 million investment from the NSW Government is part of our mission to create a safer and stronger regional NSW. “All NSW small to medium farming operations with fewer than 50 workers are eligible to participate in this free program,” said Mr Anderson.

The Nambucca Valley has a very diverse agricultural sector, featuring largely in the regional economics of the Mid North Coast.

The program will provide farm safety practices by providing education directly to farming businesses.

Allowing the NSW Government to continue to work alongside the agriculture industry on a wide range of farm-related safety issues.

Mr Anderson said, “The agricultural sector is the backbone of our regional economies

and is a significant employer in regional communities.

“It is imperative as a government we do everything we can to support farm workers and keep them safe.”

NSW commits to halving climate pollution this decade NSW is set to attract more than $37 billion in investment while slashing emissions by 50 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030, under updated projections and objectives released as part of the Net Zero: Stage 1 Implementation Update.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the state’s new objective of halving emissions by 2030 – up from 35 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030 – shows that NSW is serious about setting itself up for the future while helping the world decarbonise.

“Our Net Zero Plan is expected to attract more than $37 billion in private sector investment into NSW, support more than 9,000 jobs, save households about $130 on their electricity bills and help NSW become Australia’s first

trillion-dollar state by 2030,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“This is about putting the policies in place to give industry and investors certainty, not only to protect our planet but to future-proof our prosperity and way of life.”

Deputy Premier John Barilaro said regional communities will reap the rewards of the new industries set to emerge over the coming decades.

“Whether it is in modern manufacturing, minerals or agriculture, regional NSW is home to the skills, infrastructure and resources needed as the demand for low emissions technologies like batteries and hydrogen grows,” Mr Barilaro said.

“The entire State will benefit from the economic and

employment opportunities in low carbon technologies, and we will continue to take action in a way that delivers more jobs and more investment for people in the city and in the bush.”

Energy and Environment Minister Matt Kean said NSW was one of the first jurisdictions to commit to net zero emissions by 2050 and we are now on track to double our economy and halve our emissions by 2030.

“We can be a renewable energy super power and as global demand for low carbon products and investments grows, the fortunes of the state are increasingly tied to the fortunes of our planet,” Mr Kean said.

“In NSW, we also aren’t just

setting targets.

“As a result of our policies, the state’s emissions are projected to fall by 47-52% on 2005 levels by 2030 under independently peer reviewed modelling.”

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW has welcomed the NSW Government’s commitment.

“NSW’s progress is a brilliant demonstration that protecting our planet also creates jobs and attracts investment,” Nature Conservation Council Chief Executive Chris Gambian said.

“Today’s announcement shows what is possible when a government accepts the reality of climate change and decides to take action.

“The UK, USA and now

NSW all have committed to halving climate pollution by 2030.

“This stands in stark contrast to the inaction of Prime Minister Morrison and the Federal Government.

“The Federal Government’s 26-28% target is now so weak it is untenable.”

While the Nature Conservation Council say the announcement is a step in the right direction, they believe more can be done at all levels of government.

“50% is a great start, made possible by the genuine efforts of the Berejiklian government,” Mr Gambian said.

“There’s now no reason not to ratchet up ambition across more sectors.”

“With some leadership from the Federal Government

it is well within reach for NSW to achieve a 75% reduction in emissions this decade and netzero far sooner than 2050.

“That’s both scientifically necessary and in the economic interests of NSW residents.

“There are plenty of opportunities for cutting climate pollution even further: from building better quality homes, to ending land clearing, to truly accelerating electric vehicle uptake.

“In NSW we could speed up our planned exit from domestic coal fired power stations which would dramatically reduce carbon emissions whilst creating new jobs.

“And we could plug the hole in the bucket by reducing the land clearing rates that have exploded in recent years,” Mr Gambian said.

COVID-19 restrictions that would still be in place limiting the number of participants and their ability to enjoy the festival in the way in which it is intended.

“Hopefully by February restrictions will have been lifted so we can all enjoy the day.”

“The good news is that this month has seen a doubling of general practice Pfizer dose supply from about 10,000 doses per week to over 20,000 doses per week.

“This will triple in October to over 30,000 doses per week,” said Julie Sturgess, Healthy North Coast Chief Executive Officer.

“This is in addition to the vaccines being administered by Commonwealth Vaccination Centres, NSW Health clinics, community pharmacies and Aboriginal Medical Services.

“We anticipate about 11,000 doses of Moderna will be available per week through about 91 pharmacies, with the Pharmacy Guild of Australia (PGA) playing the lead role in enabling distribution of

this new vaccine.

“We are pleased at the rising vaccine uptake rate across the North Coast, with 79% of those aged over 16 having had their first dose and 49% having had their second dose.

“This is slightly higher (3%) than the national average but a bit lower (7%) than the state average. This difference is due to the significant push and increased dose supply supporting Sydneysiders to get vaccinated.

“The Mid North Coast area is closer to the state average, with 84% of people having had their first dose.

“Overall, rates in our region have been increasing about 5% a week, which is on par with national vaccination trends.”

NSW has a clear path to follow out of the pandemic and lockdowns, with the roadmap for easing restrictions at the 80 percent double dose target revealing a brighter future for the community.

From the Monday after NSW hits the 80 per cent (aged 16 and over) double dose vaccination target, eased restrictions will allow those who are fully vaccinated to have up to 10 people visit their home, participate in community sport, and access hospitality venues (where drinking while standing up will be allowed indoors).

Quality Time Action Plan Announced schools’ in order to free up teachers’ time for planning and teaching.

The plan is based around using technology and digital tools to streamline teaching and administrative tasks.

The Action Plan identifies a number of areas for improvement such as overhauling assessment systems to allow teachers to generate individual studentfocused assessments quickly, an online tool to allow teachers to easily store, find, share and tailor lesson plans and learning programs and streamlined administration

requirements for teachers to maintain their accreditation.

However, the New South Wales Teachers’ Federation does not quite share the Minister’s enthusiasm.

Ian Watson, Country Organiser for the Federation, said it may not be a coincidence that the announcement came the day after the Federation’s launch of its ‘More Than Thanks’ campaign which points out that teachers are overworked and underpaid.

Mr Watson said, “The Quality Time Action Plan is a desperate attempt to

deflect attention away from the crippling workloads the Government itself is responsible for.”

He said that administrative tasks add 15 hours a week to teachers’ workloads and, if the plan works, this will be cut by one hour a week.

Mr Watson described this as “Quite insulting!” and said that after the launch of the “More Than Thanks” campaign, teachers at five Coffs Coast schools have voted to take short industrial action to protest.

Federation says that, compared to OECD countries, NSW primary teachers spend 11% more hours in the classroom, lower secondary teachers 14.5% and upper secondary teachers 20% more than the OECD average.

A local teacher who spoke to News Of The Area agreed that hours in the classroom were high.

He said that schools already used technology to simplify and streamline practices, such as record keeping and planning lessons.

MORE than 50 beaches will be patrolled this season and 200 UAV pilots employed to watch over swimmers and surfers through an expanded shark surveillance program in NSW. Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW), with the support of the Department of Primary Industries, will provide UAV coverage in every coastal LGA in the state, with flights commencing this weekend to coincide with the start of surf patrols by lifesavers and lifeguards.

The extension to this program will see over 200 pilots employed along the NSW coastline, predominantly in regional areas with these pilots expected to deliver in excess of 25,000 flights across the 50 locations.

The UAV Program will continue at Sawtell SLSC, Urunga SLSC and MacksvilleScotts Head SLSC. The additional 16 locations this year include popular tourist destinations on the far north and far south

coasts and in the Greater Sydney region.

The cost-effective, noninvasive UAV technology has proven to be successful at keeping swimmers and surfers safe, while minimising the impact on marine life.

Since the program commenced three years ago, the public response has been overwhelmingly positive,

with people reporting greater confidence entering the water at locations where UAVs are operating.

“We want to applaud the Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall and the NSW Government for committing to do everything they can to keep people safe by boosting UAV capability and we are looking forward to playing

our part in the program,” said SLSNSW President George Shales OAM. “Alongside their primary use for shark mitigation, the UAVs are an additional tool to assist volunteer lifesavers and lifeguards identify other hazards such as rip currents, patrol outside flagged swimming areas and are an integral part of search and

rescue operations.”

TEACHERS and students at schools across regional NSW will benefit from a complete overhaul of how the government attracts and retains teachers in the bush.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro said the NSW Government commissioned the Review of Rural and Remote Incentives in NSW Public Schools, which focused on improving the benefits for regional teachers by ensuring they are fair and flexible.

“We are already investing record amounts in school infrastructure and technology in regional parts of the State, so it’s time our incentives program is upgraded to attract top quality teachers to the bush,” Mr Barilaro said.

“At the heart of these investments are our regional

Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell said she commissioned the review in response to conversations and feedback from teachers working in regional, rural and remote areas.

“The government is accepting all recommendations put forward by the review, and we will immediately begin implementing reforms to attract and retain teachers in regional NSW,” Ms Mitchell said.

“We have the most generous incentive system in Australia, however over time it has grown in complexity.

Teacher Housing Authority NSW to upgrade, repair and build new accommodation for teachers in areas of high demand.

Principals, teachers, key education stakeholders and experts will be consulted with and help co-design longer-term initiatives, including: The revamping and simplification of the transfer point system to reduce inequity, better communication on what is available for teachers in the regions, and allowing employees to work on a bespoke package which suits their individual circumstances; The creation of a more holistic approach to regional relocation which focuses on ‘families’ rather than just individuals; and,

The establishment of a centralised team to oversee regional staffing.

“Regional NSW is an incredibly attractive place to live and work.

“I want to see more people experience teaching in Regional NSW and I want to remove barriers for anyone wanting a teaching career in the bush,” Ms Mitchell said.

The review recommendations support the initiatives included in the Teacher Supply Strategy due for release later this year.

Action on social and affordable housing options “Everybody THE COVID-19 pandemic and the financial stress it’s caused millions of NSW residents has highlighted the urgent need for more social and affordable housing options across the state, prompting the Country Women’s Association (CWA) of NSW to advocate on the issue during its annual Awareness Week in September.

This year’s Awareness Week campaign runs in September and has a particular emphasis on the social and affordable housing need in rural and regional NSW, as well as on women over 55 who are the fastest growing cohort of homeless people in Australia.

“We acknowledge governments at all levels are committing resources towards social and

affordable housing, but it is not keeping pace with the current demand, and the demand expected in the future,” said Gail Kirby, President of the Macksville branch of the CWA of NSW. The statistics emphasise the stark reality of the current situation, with a 2020 NSW Council of Social Services (NCOSS) report showing there was a shortfall of more than 200,000 social and affordable homes in NSW and almost 60,000 households were waiting for social housing.

Waiting times in certain regions of the state can be as long as 20 years.

Community housing providers believe the COVID-19 pandemic

and ongoing associated restrictions are only going to worsen the current situation.

“Housing affordability is an issue of real urgency for communities right across NSW. COVID-19 restrictions have actually prompted many people in our large cities to look to the regions for a change of lifestyle, which has had the effect of pushing up housing prices in these areas and impacting locals who are either looking to get into the housing market, or looking for somewhere to rent,” Gail Kirby said.

“For those on the waiting list for social housing this is all bad news, as individuals and families struggle to keep a roof over their heads in the face of rising private market rents or have to rely on the generosity of family and friends. Worse still, some of these people will run out of options and be forced onto the streets, contributing to

the already unacceptable rates of homelessness in our state.”

According to statistics from Macquarie University, research has shown that at least three quarters of HSC students have exceeded normal to moderate stress levels.

“As we strive to achieve our desired ATAR, most of us are struggling to deal with the pressure and stress that comes with all that hard work,” said Nambucca Valley HSC student Tracy Nguyen.

“HSC students see the ATAR as the most crucial result in getting into the course we want to do, at the university we want to attend, and it all depends on whether we achieved that minimum standard for that course or not.

Nambucca Valley Police News ON 23/9/21 at about 11am Police spoke to a 48-year-old male unlicensed driver in Nambucca Heads after his vehicle was sited without displaying any number plates.

The man was also witnessed to be breaching

RECENT changes to the NSW Road Rules, which remove outdated weight limits for power wheelchairs and motorised mobility scooters, known as Motorised Mobility Devices (MMDs) used by people with physical disability, are welcomed

by the Physical Disability Council of NSW. PDCN has been advocating for the onerous weight restriction to be lifted for several years, emphasizing the practical problems these rules caused its members.

Previous weight limits for MMDs used in NSW prevented people with

disability from using certain, essential models of MMDs or in other cases, needing to do as no other suitable option was available, and risking legal action if an incident occurred when they did.

It also effectively cut residents of NSW who use MMDs off from a significant part of the overseas MMD market that offered major

functional and technical improvements.

In highlighting the practical impact of the weight rules, Physical Disability Council of NSW CEO Ms Serena Ovens said, “We literally had situations where people had gone to the cost and effort of purchasing MMDs, and were told ‘this is too heavy,

SATURDAY was another great day for the single Stableford sponsored

by Macksville Automotive Services, with 60 teeing off. After being one off the money last week David Maloney continues his good form to win this week's event with a net 42.

With a net 41 last week he should be losing shots off his handicap. Mick Manning's one over par round for a net 41 earned him the runner up.

Mick told me his game included a wipe (no score) on the fourth and four birdies.

That's a score most of us only dream about.

Second runner up was one of our senior members Graham Vincent, who is still fit enough to walk the course with his group of early starters.

The mid week competition was won

by Jeff Gore, who left his form at home on Saturday.

On Tuesday the ladies finished

with three tied after 18 holes, Carmel Fruedenstein, Desma Hughes and Lorraine King.

Carmel who won on a countback says it's that long, the last time she won she might still have been a teenager. Gary again asks that players please book playing times for Saturday competitions.

South Africa's loss is Macksville's gain - Roy Rudner confidently putting on the third green with Steve Ash and Brian King admiring his style. The cream always comes to the top.

Meanwhile, the Clarke ‘boys’, Gary and Allan, seem to be

A Bright Future for the Nambucca Strikers

By David WIGLEY AS the football season came to an end for the Nambucca Strikers women’s team, coach Rhys Jones reflected on a bright year and a bright future as he summarised the season and paid tribute to the players.

Although the season ended on a high note, it almost didn’t take off due to a player shortage.

“2021 was a completely new start for women’s football at Nambucca Strikers, only two players returned from the previous season with a new coach.

“Recruitment was extremely difficult, with only three weeks before the season started we only had four players.

“Opposition coaches would constantly comment on how hard we played and were always stunned when I told them of the age and experience of the team,” said Rhys.

The Nambucca Strikers saved their best performance for the toughest team in the competition in Coffs United, which they narrowly lost 1-0.

“Off the back of a 5-0 loss to Sawtell the team turned up and I have never seen more shocked opposition coaches or players, in a battle where Coffs United got home by the skin of their teeth 1-0.

“There were many great performances during the

year, I felt our backs formed the strongest defence of the division, hard, tough and tireless best describes Kiarra and Kyesha Cohen, Liz Smith, Jenna Welsh, Tash Brittian, Zahara Kete and our first year Kick On Graduate Virginia Arkel,” said Rhys.

A trio of teenagers were in the team’s engine room with some playing juniors in the morning and seniors in the afternoon.

“The midfield was our engine room who competed for everything, they ran all day and fought hard, they were our babies of the team, Alex Habgood aged 16 would play juniors in the morning and then play afternoons in the opens.

“Lily Woodward, 16, and Toria Kete, 15, matured and took on greater responsibility as the season progressed.”

Rhys was full of praise for his players' performances,

both on and off the pitch.

“Simone Jordan's hard work both on and off the field will always be remembered.

“Jenny Brabent’s persistence and calming influences (was key) especially with a humorous comment when things were hard.

“Our ‘Eveready bunny' Jemma Burtonwood, who would just flick the switch and she would run all day,” said Rhys.

The Nambucca Strikers goalkeeper also had a stellar year, saving an incredible six out of nine penalties she faced.

“The team didn’t enjoy the luck they deserved,

the team gave away nine penalties during the season of which goalkeeper Rhiannon Cooke Jones saved six, which typified her performances during the year.

“Centre forwards Lauren Heath grew with confidence and experience throughout the year, Deslie Townley showed a big heart and big commitment and skipper and leader Kyesha Cohen led from the front and played everywhere and was a great support to her coach and team.

“Not to mention the hard luck story of Kaisa Waka who tore her calf muscle in her very first game but still supported the team.

q Sixteen year old Alex Habgood doubled up playing for the Nambucca Strikers juniors in the morning and seniors in the afternoon.

“Special mention goes to our over 30s players Simone Jordan, Liz Smith, Tash Brittian, Jenny Brabant Deslie Townley, Jemma Burtonwood who made a commitment to be part of the opens team, however when times were hard and availability was an issue the players united, thank you very much to Danielle ‘muzz’ Gourlay, Carolyn Blackadder, Julie Ann Panitz, Sharna Halverson and Dianne Wilkinson and our Junior Jewel Nelson who made herself available.”

In his first year at the helm, coach Rhys Jones has laid foundations for a bright future and is already looking forward to next year.

“It's a spirit like this that shapes a group, our future looks very bright with juniors coming through, the culture that has developed and we are looking forward to the future.

“Our team has already started to prepare for next year with something called kickabout so they can be ready for their coach in the preseason, roll on next year,” said Rhys.

Club President Jenna Welsh echoed Rhys’ sentiment and invited nominations to join the Club’s committee.

“From hard work, especially from our women’s coordinator Simone Jordan, we were able to field a team for the first game of the season, which really set the tone for the rest of the season.

“We came up against a Boambee side that had been together for several years, we lost 3-0, however what a great performance from a team which contained six players tasting their first experience of 11 a side football.

“Courage, commitment, and attitude were the key words that describe this team, all year the team never gave up, even when going down a goal they fought hard

“This is a fantastic club to be part of, our AGM is on 26 October at 6:30pm at the Nambucca Heads Leagues and Sports Club.

DEAR Jasminda, During my recent Council roadside pickup preparation, I tried to discard some of my son's belongings that he hasn't touched in over five years.

He wouldn't allow me to do so, saying it would ruin his childhood memories.

Grieving partner faces risky claim GEORGE and Lily dated for about 9 months before George moved into Lily’s house.

Lily’s parents had given her $100,000 to assist her with the purchase of the house.

George and Lily had talked about travelling overseas once COVID was ‘under control’ and then planned to begin a family together.

Unfortunately, after one year of living together, Lily died in a car accident.

Lily did not have a will.

George seeks legal advice about the distribution of her estate and George’s solicitor asks him about his relationship with Lily.

He asks about their financial dependence on each other and is told that while Lily had purchased the residence, they shared the performance of household duties and living expenses.

They held a joint travel savings account and Lily contributed towards the purchase of a 4x4 dual cab utility for weekend camping, which was registered in George’s name.

The had attended a family Christmas at George’s parents’ home and were observed as a committed and loving couple by their family and friends.

George is advised that in the circumstances, he and Lily were in fact in a legal de facto relationship at the time of her death.

However, George is advised that in the absence of a will, he had no entitlement to Lily’s estate because their de facto relationship did not exceed the requisite two-year period and therefore Lily’s parents are entitled to the whole of her estate.

George retains the balance of the joint bank account by way of survivorship and the ownership of the 4x4 vehicle.

George is finally advised that he can make a family provision claim against Lily’s estate, despite the short length of their relationship but that the costs involved may exceed any award that might be made in his favour.

Cost blow-out of Nambucca Library project OPINION DEAR News Of The Area,

IN recent correspondence regarding the extension to the Nambucca Library, little attention has been given to the enormous cost blow-out of the project, and the impact that this will have on other works that Council has in the pipeline.

Council was initially confident that the project, including new toilet facilities, could be delivered for $2 million, and it had received detailed, professional advice to that effect.

Some in the community, however, urged caution, based on professional experience, the complexity of the site, and sky-rocketing construction costs in the wake of the bushfires.

Wise counsel, however, did not prevail, and we now have a development which, when we factor in the cost of the new toilet block to the east of the library, will cost

taxpayers in the region of $4 million.

That’s double the original estimate, and nobody is batting an eyelid!

The cost blow-out is to be funded out of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program from the 2021 and 2022 allocations.

That’s $2 million that would otherwise have been spent on improvements to roads, bridges, footpaths and other community amenities in the Valley.

It is very concerning that, at every stage of the development of this important project, our Councillors have simply waved through the many progress reports tabled by Council officers.

It seems to me that they have been asleep at the wheel.

George and Fay Wilson celebrate 60 years NAMBUCCA Heads locals George and Fay Wilson celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary later this month.

First meeting in Revesby Heights, Sydney in 1959, Fay was working at the local grocers at the top of town when she noticed a young man who came in frequently to buy things he didn’t need.

tea,” said Fay. “I always made sure I was at the front of the shop around that time so I could catch his eye.”

The man in question was George Wilson, who had also spotted Fay and taken a shine to her.

“I decided to ask her out and our first date was at the drive-in at Bass Hill,” said George.

“I was training horses with my father at that time, when we had a big win at the track, I used to flash the money in my wallet so she’d think I was flush.”

Fay and George continued to go steady, with the two marrying in 1961.

“We moved about a bit after that,” said George.

“I drove the trotters for a while and ran a pig farm in Leppington.

“We kept a couple of horses and cattle.

“Fay used to milk them every day and make her own cheese and butter.

“I used to drive the local 44 Door Saloon, which was a challenge back in those days when trucks didn’t have great suspension!”

Fay and George moved to Nambucca Heads with their five children in 1978, buying a plot of land where George built their family home.

They soon became well known around the community.

George, a jack of all trades, held down work locally as a truck driver, builder, labourer, fisherman and purveyor of a fine homebrew.

The problem here is that we are attached to objects for a range of different reasons, and none of us can really judge the desirability another person puts on something in terms of its sentimental value.

What you may see as a clapped-out tennis-table table, is, in your son's eyes, the remnants of his childhood, specifically the day he beat that show-off Johnny Smythe.

It is the same reason I keep a pair of very short shorts with frangipanis on them in my wardrobe. I know I will never wear them again, but it's nice to hold on to the memory of the tanned legs and flat stomach that once accommodated those shorts so perfectly.

As they say, one person's trash is another person's treasure, and this becomes all too apparent when you do put your belongings on the grass strip awaiting collection.

Before long, passers-by will start rifling through your memories, and in some cases load them into the car boot, at which point you will feel a sudden surge of affection for that camping chair with a rip in the fabric and contemplate chasing after them.

There is also an equivalent of buyer's remorse, known as chucker's remorse.

The calculation goes something like this: Item value minus the number of years you have last used it multiplied by the number of hours it sits waiting for collection plus the number of people who stop to look at it equals the likelihood of you running back out to the front of your property and retrieving it before it gets carted away.

The longer you wait, the more likely you are to return your junk back to the mezzanine for another two years where it will gather more dust and rat poo, and the decision-making process will start again.

Maybe suggest to your son that he can have a designated area in the shed, and if his belongings don't fit into that space, they need to go.

Also, once he leaves home, DO NOT under any circumstances let him store those items and the associated memories at your place.

They are his to deal with at that point, and he can then decide how much they really mean to him.

George and Fay were also keen globetrotters, travelling around Australia and the world multiple times in the last 60 years, visiting the British Isles, Europe, India, the Americas and East Asia.

“We’ve had a good life,” said George, “full of honest work, adventure, friends and family”.

“We’re lucky to still live together at home.

“We’ve got five children, twelve grandkids and seven great grandchildren, many of which still live in the area and visit regularly for a cuppa on the balcony.”

George and Fay celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary in Nambucca Heads on 28 October.

Nine years after Letters and Numbers last graced our screens with new episodes, the format is back with a comedic twist. Its loyal audience, who demanded the show’s return, can let out the victory squeal: the new and improved edition has arrived. Wordsmith David Astle is back on board, as is maths marvel Lily Serna, with Michael Hing (The Other Guy) the new host.

Tonight, Suren Jayemanne, Jennifer Wong and Merrick Watts are joined by Bridie Connell.

Host Sophie Monk returns with her dry wit, megawatt smile and bombshell wardrobe for the third season of this reality dating bonanza, but the same can’t be said for the exotic island location promised in the show’s title – previous seasons have taken place in Mallorca and Fiji.

Nevertheless, we’ve all become adept at compromise and adapting during the pandemic, which has closed the door on international travel.

In tonight’s return, the singles head to a villa in northern NSW where they hope to find a match and resist the temptation of new potential partners to win the public’s affection, and the $50,000 prize.

COASTAL IRELAND WITH ADRIAN DUNBAR

With millions spending more time at home these days, it’s fair to say some are doing it more spectacularly than others. There’s nothing like a pandemic to inspire you to return home (and stay there); Irish actor Adrian Dunbar (Line of Duty) isn’t a particularly charismatic presenter, but the scenery in rugged Ireland delivers the goods. From the rowdy ocean to velvet green-dipped cliffs, the camera work in this series is top-notch, but we could probably do without the over-the-top theatrical soundtrack. Tonight, Dunbar visits Malin Head, the Giant’s Causeway, Mount Stewart gardens and the Mourne Mountains.

Funds breathe fresh air into Bowra Netball Club

WHEN Jo Simon became President at Bowra Netball

Club nine months ago, she walked into a club that

literally had no equipment.

March with the vision to build this little club up.

“Having a supportive committee, we went to town.

“All they possessed were their netball dresses, which is a requirement to play in the Saturday morning competition at Macksville each week.

“The dresses are absolutely lovely and were designed by a local Aboriginal family and are just beautiful.”

The Club didn't even have a ball or set of bibs.

“So we approached the local businesses and they helped us out.”

An early win was a donation from Bowraville RSL who donated $1,000.

Bowraville Junior Rugby League Club donated their Rebel Sport credits which can be traded for equipment.

Local businesses have also rallied to the cause by running raffles to raise money.

“We couldn't be more appreciative.

“We now have training equipment, fitness equipment and first aid boxes on standby.”
