Remembering the Manusu Brothers

By Mick BIRTLES EACH April, as ANZAC Day approaches, the nation reflects with a sense of sorrow on the sacrifices made in war.

For some families the loss is almost unthinkable and that is how it was for the Manusu family of Bowraville during the Second World War. At the time war broke out there were seven children in this family.

Percy Manusu, the third oldest, would enlist in 1940 and two of his brothers, Perry, the second eldest, and Guy, the fifth born, enlisted together six months later.

Although all three Manusu boys would serve in the Middle East, they were spared the worst of it and their Brigade, the 16th, headed back south when Japan entered the war.

Mission Australia’s Youth Survey 2022 now open MISSION Australia’s Youth Survey 2022 is now open and young people aged 15-19 in the Nambucca Valley are invited to take part.

The Survey has been running for over two decades and is the largest of its kind.

Young people provide insights into their challenges, concerns, experiences and barriers to achieving their goals.

The survey is a chance for young people to share their perspective on a range of key issues like COVID-19 impacts and economic and societal issues such as climate change, housing insecurity, work and study barriers and mental health concerns.

Mission Australia’s State Director Nada Nasser said young people have been faced with challenges never encountered by previous generations and emphasised the importance of providing a platform for them.

“We know from our Youth Survey that young people are extremely resilient and they care about their futures, as well as the people and world around them. We also know that they’re experiencing unique challenges, such as high levels

of psychological distress and are less happy than they were just two years ago,” she said.

“Young people are also navigating the ever-evolving pressures of things like social media and the global pandemic, both which obviously didn’t exist when we started this survey over two decades ago.

“Teenagers have borne the brunt of the economic and psychological consequences of the pandemic and they must be included in planning and decision-making that affect them, their peers, families, communities and Australia.

“That’s why we continue to prioritise creating space through our Youth Survey for young people to share their thoughts and concerns.

“The results are provided to government and nongovernment organisations to inform design and delivery of policies, initiatives and services that impact young people’s lives,” Ms Nasser said.

Last year, Mission Australia’s Youth Survey 2021 was completed by more than 4,514 young people in NSW between April and August.

COVID-19 (47.8 percent), the environment (36.9 percent) and mental health (35.4 percent) topped the key issues in 2021

that young people feel Australia must address.

The percentage of young people in NSW who said they felt lonely all or most of the time (28.2 percent) was higher than the national average (24.9 percent).

Coping with stress (50.3 percent), mental health (44.1 percent) and school or study problems (39.7 percent) were the top three issues of personal concern for young people in NSW. The Youth Survey 2021 also revealed some cause for optimism. four in ten (43.8 percent) young people in NSW indicated high levels of confidence in their ability to achieve their study or

work goals.

More than half (52.8 percent) of NSW young people indicated overall happiness with their lives.

The survey takes 20 minutes to complete.

Young people can record their responses online, either through arrangements with participating schools or groups or individually through Mission Australia’s website.

Mission Australia’s Youth Survey 2022 is open until 12 August to all young people aged 15-19 years-old who are living in Australia.

High rainfall putting pressure on Nambucca Valley sewage infrastructure FROM Page 1 The poor condition of the water was the result of high intensity rainfall that occurred on the night of 23 -24 March 2022.

“Stormwater has entered Council’s sewage system in Macksville causing some overflows that would have discharged into the Nambucca River,” read a Nambucca Valley Council social media post.

On this night the Macksville Sewage Treatment Plant measured 96mm of rain, with 120mm measured in the Industrial Area, according to Richard Spain, Manager, Waste and Wastewater at Nambucca Valley Council.

Mr Spain said that the intense rainfall on that night, and the fact that everything was already very wet, contributed to the overflow.

News Of The Area asked Nambucca Valley Councillor David Jones if there have been any changes that have created more pressure on the infrastructure.

“There has been a small number of additional houses but the system is designed to cope with that,” Mr Jones said.

“The major change that we are seeing is more frequent extreme weather events, and this is showing up the weak points in our system.”

Mr Spain told News Of The Area that upgrading the infrastructure for stormwater

would cost a huge sum of money.

Cr Jones said, when asked about the cost of updating the systems, “The Council’s ability to upgrade our sewage system is all dependent on finances, the cost of building and maintenance is increasing across all infrastructure sectors.

FROM Page 1 Guy serving in C Company and Percy on A Company, pushed along the Kokoda Track where the Japanese advance had been so gallantly halted by those ‘Ragged Bloody Heroes’ of the 3rd Militia Brigade and the 25th Brigade.

The 2/1st Battalion would pursue the now retreating Japanese forces and engage in a prolonged series of skirmishes and battles against a determined enemy.

Eora Creek was the scene of some of the most intense fighting of the campaign where it took close quarter combat and hand to hand fighting to deal with the well dug-in Japanese troops.

It was at Eora Creek where tragedy would strike the Manusu family.

Guy Manusu was killed in action on 23 October 1942 and four days later his brother Perry was so severely wounded by machine gun fire he soon passed away.

Despite wanting to fight on following the loss of his brothers, Percy’s Commanding Officer spared the Manusu family further sorrow by sending him back to Australia, thus surviving the War. News Of The Area spoke to Miss Pauline Manusu, the niece of Percy, Guy and Perry Manusu, who said, “Of course my Dad, Cyril, was greatly affected by the loss of his brothers.”

Pauline added, “There are plaques now at the Bowraville Cemetery in memory of Guy and Perry which is wonderful to see as they are buried in New Guinea, the only members

of the family not buried at Bowraville.”

The Combined RSL subBranches of the Nambucca Valley became aware that the medals awarded to Guy and Perry Manusu were awarded posthumously and have subsequently gone missing despite several attempts by family members to relocate them.

In order to help keep the memory of these young men alive the RSL sub-Branches of Bowraville, Macksville, Stuarts Point and Nambucca Heads have had replica medals produced and presented to Pauline Manusu so family members could wear them on ANZAC Day each year.

Mr Spain told News Of The Area that when there is a sewage overflow, Council

will alert the community and advise against swimming in the river until the flood waters have receded.

Notifications will be provided on the Nambucca Valley Council Facebook page and the Nambucca Valley Council website.

A separate incident occurred on 22 December 2021, when sewage overflow discharged into Beer Creek and entered the Nambucca River, however Council stated this was caused by a blockage rather than extreme weather.

By Karen GRIBBIN THERE were many disappointed and discouraged Valla residents in the gallery of the Nambucca Valley Council’s ordinary meeting on 24 February.

Among the meeting’s agenda items was discussion of the reclassification of two pieces of land in Valla from Community Land to Operational Land, to allow for their future sale.

The first site in question was Lot 8, 22 Valla Beach Road, Valla Beach, the site of the Alithia Learning Hub. The second site was part of Lot 45 99-101 Ocean View Drive, Valla Beach.

Three Valla residents spoke at the meeting against Council’s proposal to no avail.

Tracey Suter, a Valla resident since 2009 and a Member of Valla Beach Community Association since 2010, stated in her address that the general public did not understand the ramifications of reclassification of the lots.

“In the report community land/facility was mentioned approximately fifteen times and operational only four times.

“There was no glossary of terms to explain to the layperson what was meant by operational land as used in this context.

“Once the land is operational Council can buy back from Alithia Learning this parcel of land for a dollar, allowing Council ownership and dispersal of land and building at their

discretion.

“I think it understandable that the general public could miss the fact that Council may be able to sell the current ‘community’ land to anyone if it went back to Council, if Alithia no longer wished to use the land,” said Tracy.

Alithia Inc. is a Public Benevolent Institute, a community-run charity, and is situated on the proposed reclassification site.

At the meeting there seemed to be confusion between Council staff and councillors whether this parcel was zoned ‘educational’ or ‘residential,’ with no clarification of this issue given on the night.

Dr John Bennett presented Council with 250 additional signatures against the motion to reclassify Ocean View Drive before his address to Council.

“Local Consulting’s report of the public meeting held in November 2021, concerning this proposal stated, ‘Council notes that this parcel of Lot 45 (called ‘the handle’), ‘contributes little significance to the local/ broader community’.

“Yet, at that meeting many issues were raised in opposition to the proposed reclassification – none in support.

“The petition, organised by Gary Johnston, has garnered 795 signatures, the latest batch of over 250, I present to you now.

“The land was granted to the community by the planners as seen on the original plan, and the community has said a resounding no, Council should honour this,” said Dr Bennett.

Dr Bennett then spoke about the degrading of wildlife corridors in the Valla Beach area.

Gary Cattanach, a member of the local Aboriginal Land Council, described the land as wildlife corridors significant in sustaining the varied wildlife of the Valla community.

Gary outlined the social cohesion of working with the community regarding land management.

He said the selling of land is a short-sighted cash grab, and reminded Council that once habitat and land is sold it is gone, unable to be returned.

“The Valla community is small and we are used to waiting for things.

“The money for a new foot bridge will come, we just have to wait, keeping the land is more important,” said Gary Cattanach.

Councillors David Jones and Susan Jenvey spoke against the selling of land.

“There is goal planning for bridges in the budget, there will be other grants, and we should be listening to the Valla community,” said Councillor Jenvey.

Mayor Rhonda Hoban argued that the money was needed to rebuild the Valla Beach Footbridge, as a recent grant to do so had been refused.

Council will now proceed to make the plan associated with Nambucca LEP amendment No 30 for Part Lot 45 DP 228703 99-101 Ocean View Drive, Valla Beach.

The matter is to be referred to the Minister of Lands and Planning to make the plan.

The next step for Valla community members with concerns is to engage with the Minister.

CWA hold Flood Fundraiser

MACKSVILLE CWA held its Craftarama Flood Fundraiser event last Wednesday, 23 March.

The event was a collaboration between Nambucca Valley service groups; to raise money, bring the community together and have fun.

Anne Sutton, Macksville CWA’s Event Coordinator, was happy with the community participation, as well as being able to liaise with other organisations to make the day a success.

The event was held at the Macksville ex-Services Club, who collected the ticket money and allowed the use of the venue at no cost.

“All funds raised on the day were added to the ex-Services Club Flood Appeal, and Judy Ward, the (Macksville) exService's CEO gave us the space free of charge, the club helped out with printing and morning tea,” said Anne Sutton.

Organisers extended a big thank you to all those taking part, making donations and helping on the day.

Nambucca Valley Council donated $500, the Utungan Community Hall donated $50 and biscuits for morning tea, while the Guiding Grans donated $50.

Life of Colour made a donation of pencils, pens and wooden pieces.

VIEW Nambucca Valley had plenty of ladies on hand to help participants with painting, pasting and craft works.

Funds raised on the day will go to flood relief in small communities, in the form of

first aid, fuel, food and gift vouchers.

“In disasters as we saw with our own floods and fires over the last few years it’s the smaller towns that miss out.

“This money will go a long way to bring smaller communities back together, giving families a helping hand and support that’s needed,” said Anne.

There will be another Craftarama held at a later date as there was enough donated to be able to run two fundraising events.

EACH year Business and Professional Women (BPW) Coffs Harbour supports two recipients with scholarships in the culminating year of their tertiary study.

The awards, the Maude Spielvogel Scholarship ($1250) and the Wendy Martin Education Encouragement Award ($750), honour former BPW members, two women who were passionate about education.

As a global organisation, the intentions of BPW

are underpinned by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

This scholarship programme aligns with goal number four, ‘Ensuring an inclusive and equitable quality education and promotion of life-long learning for all’.

Past scholarship winners have come from diverse areas of study including: psychology, online games development, aged care, midwifery, disability nursing, marine science and art.

Applicants need to be women who live in the Coffs Coast area (including the Local Government areas of

Coffs Harbour, Bellingen and Nambucca) and are studying at tertiary level for a diploma, degree or higher qualification.

They should have had a gap between secondary schooling and tertiary study, have overcome disadvantage and/or adversity and/or challenges, and be in the final year of study (due to complete their course by July 2023).

Successful applicants will be contacted for an interview and the two winners will be recognised at a formal dinner and presentation in June.

Dismay Over Facebook Post

A SINCE deleted post on a Facebook page called ‘Coffs Harbour Nationals’ has warned potential Federal Election voters to “not to be conned by the enormous amount of money being spent by the forces of the Evil Far Left to get another ‘independent’ in our Cowper!”.

The post also extolled the merits of the current Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan.

A spokesperson for Mr Conaghan said that the Facebook page was administered by an individual,

does not use an official National Party email address and was not vetted by the party.

The spokesperson said that Mr Conaghan had asked for the post to be removed as soon as he became aware of it, and had approached Ms Heise to express his disappointment.

Needless to say, Independent candidate for Cowper Carolyn Heise was not happy with being labelled as a puppet of the ‘Evil Far Left’.

“The mums and dads, the retirees, grandparents, farmers and business people who have chipped in between $20 to $800 to support my campaign are not part of any ‘Evil Far Left’ cabal.”

Ms Heise said her supporters were “simply hardworking people who want politics done differently, with honesty, respect and fairness”.

“To me it is rather strange that a party which takes huge donations from dirty polluters and massive corporations that profit from the misery inflicted by gambling, smoking and alcohol, would criticise my

Ms Heise said that many of her supporters also took exception to the post's reference to “our Cowper”. “(It is) as if they owned the electorate like it was a trophy or possession.

“They deserve a future which is not dictated by the demands made by dirty donors of the parties they control.”

Joshua Fairhall announced as UAP candidate for Cowper

By Andrea FERRARI JOSHUA Fairhall has been announced as the United Australia Party candidate for the Federal seat of Cowper.

38-years-old and married with three kids, Joshua hails from the Nambucca Valley and has recently moved to Kempsey from Bowraville.

Joshua shared with News Of The Area a glimpse of his background and the reasons why he’s standing for Cowper in the upcoming election.

“I'm a business owner and I own Bi-Rite Home Appliances West Kempsey, Gloucester and Kempsey Discount Furniture,” Joshua told NOTA. “I'm not a career politician, just a retailer that's sick of the lies and BS from the current Government.

“I truly feel that there needs to be more people from business in Government, and not career politicians who have no idea what's happening in the real world,” Joshua said.

Joshua said he joined the UAP as the candidate for Cowper to focus on four things, the first being ending mandates.

“Ending the mandates and getting our emergency service workers, who sacrificed their jobs to stand their ground, back into their jobs.

“It’s proven that vaccinations don't stop transmission so why stop people from working now?

Ready Set Go Youth Music Mentorship Program

IN the wake of its 2021 success, the Ready Set Go Youth Music Mentorship Program is back again for 2022 and registrations are now open for young people in the Nambucca Valley aged 13 - 18.

The program is based on the premise that being involved in music and creativity has positive effects on the mental health and emotional well being of young people.

Mentors for the program are music industry professionals Alicia Parry, Dee Bee Bishop and Rob Torelli, and the program is coordinated by Olivia Parker and Alex Parani.

The Mentors point to research that shows how music can benefit youth in so many ways including

helping improve memory and thinking skills, contributing to positive wellbeing, improved confidence and teaching discipline and inspiring creativity and self-expression.

News Of The Area spoke to Ready Set Go Mentor Dee Bee Bishop who said, “The Program has been developed by local Nambucca musicians and those who work in the industry to provide young people with varying career pathways in the music industry such as performance, sound production and event management.”

Dee Bee added, “Young people gain first hand knowledge from mentors and are able to tap into the abundance of expertise available within our community which helps build stronger networks.”

Caring for Carers

THE Nambucca Heads ‘Everlasting Carers’ group was launched just before Christmas 2020.

News Of The Area caught up with organiser Bev Reedy to talk about what the group can offer Nambucca Valley carers.

There are approximately 854,300 carers in New South Wales (ABS 2018).

Carers provide ongoing unpaid support to community members, family, spouses, children, and parents.

According to a Deloitte report for Carers Australia, primary informal carers across the country provided an average of 35.2 hours of care per week in 2020, for a total of nearly 2.2 billion hours of care.

This comprised almost 1.7 billion hours from primary carers and 491 million from non-primary carers.

Based on an average hourly replacement cost of $36.1, the report found that the total cost to replace all informal care in 2020 was $77.9 billion.

Bev Reedy is a passionate carer and advocate who is very concerned for the mental health and wellbeing of the carers in our region.

She says the caring role

can take away personal time, isolate the carer from outside activities, and can erode the carers’ mental health.

“Our group recognises the huge demand on our members, and the need for carers to take a break,” said Bev. The group offers time to sit and chat with like minded people, who are experiencing the same things.

They share information, take part in activities, and share a quiet cuppa.

“It’s well accepted that if

a carer engages in an activity, is able to keep a sense of humour, and shares ideas and information between each other, then they are less likely to burn out.”

Kathleen Miller attends the group and looks after her husband and a family friend of 30 years who lives with them.

Kathleen only has two hours a month of allocated respite care to do things for herself.

“I use my respite care to come to the carers group, I enjoy sitting with and talking with people who understand my position,” said Kathleen.

Hazel celebrates 100th birthday

CELEBRATING her 100th birthday on 29 March 2022, Hazel Bow had a tea party at her unit in Riverside Gardens, Nambucca Heads where she lives independently.

Hazel’s daughter Marilyn Cave, who lives in the Nambucca Valley, has shared some of Hazel’s life memories with News Of The Area.

Hazel was born in Brisbane where she went to Primary

School, achieving the eighth highest mark in Queensland in her final exams there.

In her two years of high school Hazel did clerical studies.

She was also a Prefect and School Captain.

She belonged to a local club where they exercised to music, played ball games and tennis.

During WW2 the club members helped prepare meals for the Servicemen.

Hazel was also a Patrol Leader in the Girl Guides.

She worked in the CBC bank (later incorporated into Westpac), earning a wage of 12 pound 6 pence per week.

Leaving the workforce to marry, as was the done thing, Hazel’s wedding to Jack Bow was in December 1945.

Married life started by living in the back of Jack’s engineering workshop with furniture built from offcuts of used timber and cushions filled with strips cut up from old material.

“It’s very difficult to organise additional respite care that coincides with what needs to be done, which means if one of us needs to go to an appointment, then all three of us go, there are too many hoops to jump through to get additional respite care.

“We have a very happy home with lots of laughter, but it can be very socially isolating, being a carer is hard yakka.”

Throughout April, Mark McGrath, a Mental Health Liaison Officer with Carers Gateway, will be conducting a Mental Health First Aid Course

for carers 18 years and above.

The course is free and will run on April 4, 12, 19 and 26 from 10am to 1pm at the Home Instead Office, 38 Bridge Street, Nambucca Heads.

There will be a cost of $4.00 per person for morning tea.

The family had many wonderful holidays travelling between Cairns, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Quickly making new friends, Jack enjoyed over three years there before he died.

Hazel likes to be as independent as possible and still drives locally.

She is genuinely interested in people their lives, work, hobbies and families - as her many friends can attest to.

In the last 20 years she has undertaken many U3A courses, embraced new technologies by enrolling in a computer course at TAFE, and at 90 started classes in Italian to keep her mind active.

She keeps herself busy reading, doing brain puzzles, crochet, playing cards and board games with neighbours.

Hazel has four grand-daughters and six great grand-children.

‘Spirit of the Anzacs’ exhibition at the Matilda Street Gallery

THE Matilda Street Gallery in Macksville will be featuring a very special exhibition from 9 April to 11 May when they host ‘Spirit of the Anzacs’ by artist Kristin Hardiman.

Kristin, now a resident of Scotts Head, is renowned as one of Australia’s leading portrait, equine and seascape artists.

She has been a professional artist and teacher for almost 30 years and is known for

her beautiful works that span the mediums of oils, gouache, water colours, lead and coloured pencil, charcoal, pen and ink.

News Of The Area asked Kristin Hardiman how she got into equine art and how that is linked to her work on the ANZACs and other Australians in conflict.

Kristin said, “I am continually amazed at the beauty of horses, particularly when they are in motion.”

Kristin went on to say that,

“From there I became very interested in the story of the Waler horses from the First World War and the Aussie Diggers that cared for them.

“I am also fascinated by the human side of conflict and try to depict that in my work.”

There is something in the exhibition for everyone and the realism and detail in all of Kristin’s art is sure to enthrall visitors to the Matilda Street Gallery.

Often commissioned to produce works for companies

such as Qantas, Sony Music and the Chase Manhattan Bank as well as being the winner of many art prizes, it can be expected that the exhibition will attract visitors from elsewhere in the state as much of the work on display will be available for purchase.

Kristin concluded by saying, “Opening night for Spirit of the Anzacs is on 9 April from 6 pm to 9 pm at the Matilda Street Gallery so please come along, I am sure you will enjoy it.”

For an artist, a themed show is a chance to revel in pure creativity: to follow a concept where it will lead without focusing on commercial concerns.

It’s a chance to play and expand technically and creatively.

“The selected artists were chosen because I respect

and admire their art and art practices.

“They are highly acclaimed in their individual discipline and this show exhibits the extraordinary diversity, both in the media used and conceptually, of the work they have produced,” said Adrienne.

Artist Sally Hook from Newee Creek made the following statement about her

work, ‘Great Barrier Wreath’.

“The images we see of chalky dead coral instead of the vibrant, kaleidoscopic corals we remember – shake us.

“Flabbergast us.

“We perceive in impotent sadness the loss of something we thought timeless and untouchable.

Borderline opens at Art Space

LOCAL artists from the Nambucca Valley join artists from the Coffs Coast in the Borderline exhibition opening at The Art Space Urunga on Saturday 9 April.

Borderline was conceived and coordinated by Adrienne Hmelnitsky, one of The Art Space’s founding members and an award-winning sculptor.

Adrienne curates this exhibition and her passion for soul stirring art is reflected in this exceptional collection of drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints and multimedia works.

When pondering what theme to set for this exhibition, Adrienne chose the single word Borderline, a word that she personally felt would inspire literal, psychological and emotional responses by the artists.

“I knew it would be broadly interpreted, giving the artists freedom to explore a myriad of ideas and directions with their artworks.”

Mural underway at Urunga Foodland

URUNGA is fast becoming the heart of outdoor art on the Mid North Coast, with another exterior mural unravelling a thought-provoking story for passers-by to ponder over.

When you next visit the small seaside Urunga, you will notice that across the intersection from the Art Space Gallery and opposite the primary school, the Foodland supermarket wall is undergoing a transformation.

Masonry borders around strange-shaped windows and doorways, dilapidated stonework, vines growing on walls inhabited with unusual creatures and large posters depicting local points of interest are covering what was previously a large bare wall space.

The style of artwork is termed ‘trompe l’oeil’ (fooling the eye) and is being created by two local Urunga artists, David Southgate and David Bromley.

and printmaker, already well known for his existing mural in Urunga.

David Southgate is a local artist who, with his wife, ran Hungry Head Pottery for many years and helped set up Urunga’s well known Art Space Gallery.

The two Davids have become a team and can often be seen working on sections of the wall, creating their illusory effects, transforming the space into an entertaining visual feast for all to enjoy.

“What began as a straightforward commission to do an interesting mural for the town has changed due to complications, including Covid and the continuing wet weather,” David Southgate told News Of The Area.

“The time frame for completing the project was made irrelevant due to these many obstacles and delays.”

The two artists find that they can now enjoy the painting process more and continue to invent the unfolding scene

as they try out new ideas and techniques, without having to justify the time frame and cost of hours spent.

“The mural will be determined finished when David and I are satisfied with our efforts in making something unique for the town’s community and visitors.

“So the town of Urunga will benefit from what has become truly a labour of love,” he said.

David Bromley explains how they created the trompel’oeil window in the mural. ”The brickwork is masked off with sticky plastic and I am using an airbrush to apply a shadow on the glass and frames of the window.

“There is also a shadow around the bricks to create the illusion of depth.

“This effect greatly enhanced the trompe l’oeil effect of the window.

“It makes it look more 3D and therefore, realistic.

“The wall is flat; everything the viewer sees is paint.”

“They were loaded with references of waste, recycling, rubbish, but I saw them as preshaped surfaces ready-made to be reformed.

“Through random arrangement according to my visual aesthetic ‘industrial’ abstracts emerged creating edges, lines and borders,” Sara said.

Borderline is a not-to-bemissed display of fine arts that is not only original but thought provoking and emotionally powerful.

The Opening Night celebration is on Saturday 9 April from 5pm – 7pm.

The exhibition runs from 9 April through until 30 April.

Newry Art Auction To Protect The Forests

AFTER being postponed because of COVID-19 last year, the Newry Art Auction will be held at the Bellingen Showground Pavilion on Saturday, 9 April.

Ten artworks available in the live auction can be viewed at newryartauction.wordpress. com.

A further forty artworks on

display can be bid for through a ‘silent auction’ which involves successive bids on a form beside each artwork.

Pre-viewing and the silent auction will begin from 10am with the main show, music and live auction happening from 6pm.

The live auction can be watched and bids can be made online via a live stream at 7pm on the Newry Forest Blockade

Facebook page.

Zianna Fuad, one of the event organisers, told News Of The Area that all funds raised are predominantly for forest protection and would go towards cultural education and awareness conducted by Gumbaynggirr elders.

She said, “This will be a special evening of artwork and music to protect our irreplaceable native forests.”

BELLINGEN Readers & Writers Festival has announced its second release of authors booked in to speak at the annual event.

Jane Caro AM is a Walkley Award-winning Australian columnist, author, novelist, broadcaster, advertising writer, documentary maker, feminist and social commentator.

Jane appears frequently on Q&A, The Drum and Sunrise.

Her most recent nonfiction work is ‘Accidental Feminists’, about the fate of women over 50.

‘The Mother’ is her first novel for adults.

Stan Grant is one of Australia’s most respected and awarded journalists with a storied 30-year career.

The ABC’s International Affairs Analyst is also the cohost of Q&A, a Senior Fellow at the Australian Department of Defence, and a powerful voice in Indigenous affairs.

“His most recent celebrated release, ‘With the Falling of Dusk’, was released in 2021, and we’re all more than a little excited and honoured to welcome him to the Bellingen stage,” said Adam Norris, Festival Programmer.

Novelist, playwright, essayist and actor Thomas Keneally is one of Australia’s (and the world’s) great literary treasures.

He is perhaps best known for his non-fiction novel ‘Schindler's Ark’, the story of Oskar Schindler's rescue of Jews during the Holocaust, which won the Booker Prize in 1982 and was adapted for the screen as the celebrated, unforgettable ‘Schindler’s List’ in 1993.

His latest novel, ‘Corporal Hitler’s Pistol’, was released in 2021 (though keep your eyes peeled for another book later in the year).

Dr Anita Heiss is an award-

winning author of non-fiction, historical fiction, commercial women’s fiction and children’s novels.

Abandoned rabbits in Nambucca in need of homes

TWELVE to fourteen domesticated rabbits were left behind when a tenant vacated their residence in Nambucca Heads recently These rabbits, some of which were pregnant, were left in open enclosures and running loose in the yard.

Contributing to these numbers were rabbits that had been previously abandoned when a homeowner neighbouring the rental property sold their house and left rabbits loose in the yard, leaving them to fend for themselves.

The local Real Estate agent contacted The Rabbit Sanctuary who set to work to save the left behind bunnies.

Rabbit Sanctuary investigates whether the finder of the rabbits would consider adoption, and if this is not possible then a call is put out to the network of pet foster carers.

Rebecca Willow, a committed volunteer for the Sanctuary said, “We never have enough carers and many carers have multiple foster bunnies as well as their own pet bunnies.”

In this case two rabbits were re-homed by the Real Estate agent privately.

Another of the bunnies, Bucky, has been adopted by a family in Nambucca, and they have also adopted one of the newborn bunnies that will be given to them once the bunny is seven or eight weeks old.

All the other bunnies that have been captured are now in foster care and Ms Willow said

that traps have been put back at the property with the aim of capturing up to six more bunnies that are still roaming free.

Ms Willow advised News Of The Area that, “All bunnies surrendered to The Sanctuary are desexed, micro chipped, vaccinated, wormed, flea treated and fully health checked.”

News Of The Area asked Ms Willow if domesticated rabbits make good pets.

She said, “They make wonderful companion pets if they are integrated into the family home.

“If they have a set up inside or are allowed to roam indoors they become very easy to look after and children will form a bond with them like any other pet. “ Are bunnies difficult to care for?

Ms Willow said, “You do need to bunny-proof in the beginning, especially to protect wires and cords from being chewed, but this is easy to do.

“They need unlimited hay above their litter tray and once settled in a home they will become totally litter trained as they are very clean animals.”

Bunnies should always be desexed.

The Rabbit Sanctuary is available with plenty of guidance and support to assist with the foster caring and/or adoption of rabbits.

According to Ms Willow, “The abandoning of these rabbits in Nambucca will be reported to the authorities this week.

“If people can no longer take care of their pets there are humane ways to rehome them through rescues and local

community organisations and groups.”

Lodge building grand opening

LAST Saturday, March 26 was the official opening of the refurbished Macksville Masonic Centre.

Over the last two and a half years Lodge Nambucca 271 has undertaken major repairs, alterations, and internal additions to the building in Nambucca St, Macksville.

Nambucca Lodge Secretary Brian Johnston and Lodge members undertook the renovations and repairs which were completed in 2021.

The front portion of the building in Nambucca Street was completed in 1910 and the rear section was finished in 1923.

Over the years the

building had fallen into disrepair and was almost unusable.

“This has been a wonderful effort for such a small group, they’ve worked so hard to bring this building back to working order.

“They have worked with the idea of having a commercial space for the use of local community groups,” said Grand Master Les Hicks, United Grand Lodge of NSW and ACT. Bill Whitby, Grand

A hole in one for young jobseeker with disability PATRONS of the Bellingen Golf Club will be familiar with Jamie, the young Club all rounder who works with the crew around the club and keeps the golf carts clean, fuelled and in tip top shape.

Living on the spectrum, Jamie was able to access NDIS support through a local agency in Nambucca Heads, CHESS Connect, which helped him engage in social activities and explore work experience opportunities after he graduated Year 12.

This led Jamie to his role at the Golf Club, where he began as a volunteer in late 2020.

Jamie, an avid train enthusiast and metal detectorist, loves all things motorised, so catching the bus to work with the golf carts in the Club’s workshop aligned perfectly with his passions.

“Jamie has always loved trains,” said Jamie’s mum Lorraine.

“It has been a life-long fascination for him.

“Our garage is full of model trains and the local newsagent knows to save a copy of the Hornby Train magazine for him each month.”

Having found his interest, it wasn’t long before Jamie was ready to take the next step.

He was linked to the Nambucca Heads CHESS Connect Disability Employment team and together they worked with Club Manager Mike MacGraw to assist Jamie into supported wages employment.

Supported wages is a collaborative agreement between employers and employees with disability to build their capacity to work.

Mike had been involved in the hospitality industry for

decades, but this was his first encounter working with a staff member with a disability, and he has learned a lot.

“After all the natural disasters and the pandemic, one of the hardest parts of running the Club is finding staff who want to work,” said Mike.

“We didn’t realise the types of employment support we could access until CHESS Connect approached us. Jamie was keen and really wanted to be a part of the Club, so it was great to have help to support him into work.”

The Club crew and a collaborative team of Disability Employment and NDIS staff devised a plan to implement tailored workplace practices.

They created step-by-step routines for Jamie in his roles cleaning and maintaining the golf carts, making deliveries, and working in the club public area.

This established framework and schedule allowed Jamie to gain confidence, build his skills

In addition to these supports, CHESS Connect was able to procure tools to help Jamie in the workplace, including uniforms and workplace equipment which has made work in the mechanic bay smoother and

Jamie was also supported to get his RSA so he can perform duties in the bar area of the club.

So far, he’s pulled two beers and is considering his options for a third.

After six months of onthe-job coaching, Jamie transitioned into open employment, just as the club expanded its fleet of golf carts – keeping Jamie and the crew busy!

“It’s not just the work where we see Jamie developing,” said Mike.

“We’re seeing a big change as he joins in with the rest of us.

“He’s a real larrikin, so to see his personality come out and watch him interacting with the team is terrific.”

Jamie now works two days a week at the Bellingen Golf Club and keeps busy volunteering at the Frank Partridge Museum, enjoying

Thursday family dinner, a spot of golf and some solid negotiation with mum to move his model trains into the house.

We asked Jamie what his favourite part of his new job was.

His answer: “Lunch.”

Can’t argue with that!

AFTER a week of good sunny weather, the golf course was getting back to normal after the previous week’s deluges, only for the wet stuff to return on Wednesday night, predicted to last for the weekend.

Our friendly Pro is adding additional information to the Portal each morning, providing players with an unofficial course rating in addition to golf cart and mode of play information.

Once again, thanks to all for your observance of the Golf Cart and scooter instructions to keep off the fairways.

On Tuesday 22 March, we played the “Island Challenge”, a multi round Stroke event where the player with the best 5 rounds during the year will win a Drive, Play & Stay package sponsored by Toyota Service Advantage.

There was only one player that managed to play to his handicap and that was the overall Winner, Neil Duffus (20) scoring a 68 net.

Runner up was Bruce Berry (4) with net 71. Gross winner was Greg Smith (9) 82.

The Best Lady’s score was from Heather Gray (27) with 75 net.

Other good scores from

David Bartos 72, Frank Taylor 73, Ray Baker, Stuart Garvey, Philip Mander, & John Moore (Everglades) all with 74 Net. The Ladies played their Monthly Medal Stroke on Wednesday 23 March, with the Pro’s track rating of Heavy 5 not really reflected in some of the good scores.

Dianne O’Leary (19) was the winner of Division 1 (023,) with 68 net, Runner-up was Henny Oldenhove (16) with 70 net. Christine Clarke won the Gross with 80 off the stick.

In Division 2 (24-39), Angela Paton (24) scored 68 net to win from Heather Gray (27) with 71 Net. Angela won the Gross with 92.

On Sunday the re-opening of the greens is on and everyone is invited starting at 11.00am with 2 games of 7 ends with a BBQ lunch cooked by our new caterers.

Coffs cricket premierships awarded after grand finals washed out

COFFS Harbour District Cricket Association’s season premierships have been awarded to the region’s champion clubs after last weekend’s scheduled grand finals were washed out.

Nana Glen were awarded the first grade premiership capping off a great season in which they finished as undefeated minor premiers.

Valleys Cricket were awarded the second grade premiership, while Sawtell were third grade major premiers.

Despite the conditions, Allan Clarke (3) heading the Macksville team, top scored for the day with 38 points to win Division 1 (0-16) from Bradley Wilkes (16) with 36 points.

scored 34 points to win from Jeffrey Vanderwyk (20) with 33 points.

Diggers Cricket Club Inc. finished first grade runners up, with Bellingen runners up in second grade and Nana Glen third grade runners up.

The Coffs Harbour District Cricket Association’s junior premierships were also awarded due to the grand finals being washed out.

Macksville Ex-Services finished as under 16s premiers, with Bellingen/ Dorrigo Cricket Clubs winning the under 14s title and Sawtell the under 12s premiers.

Junior runners up included Coffs Colts (under 16s), Macksville Ex-Services

(under 14s), and Nana Glen (under 12s).

The North Coast Cricket Council’s Premier League grand final was postponed until this weekend, as a result of last weekend’s washout.

The Northern Districts Rebels are scheduled to host Sawtell in the Premier League decider in Woolgoolga.

The grand final will be a two-day match played at the High Street Playing Fields.

The Rebels and Sawtell have met once this season in which Sawtell won by 45 runs in their one day match at Richardson Park in January.

Between COVID and the floods it has not been a good year for the swimmers.

These swimmers won six medals and 26 top ten placings.

The results from Macksville swimmers were as follows: Benjamin Barlow (13) 30th 100 back, 40th 50 fly and 34th 50 back.

Keely Sutton (12) 18th 200 free and 49th 50 free.

I recently gave away a bookcase and dining set to a couple who were just starting out.

They said they were grateful as they couldn't afford to buy anything.

Then I saw my items listed on a Buy, Swap and Sell site for an inflated price.

I feel like contacting them to let them know that I know.

Measure twice, Court once

NATALIE found a perfect block to build her new home.

Prior to purchase, Natalie’s solicitor informs her that there was a carriageway running through the western side of the property in favour of her neighbour, Barbara.

Nevertheless, Natalie proceeds with the purchase of the property.

Barbara as a generational landowner had utilised the carriageway for many years, but in a short time, built a good relationship with Natalie, and all was amicable.

After several years passed, Natalie’s family expanded and so did her need for storage.

Natalie builds a shed on her property, but unfortunately after the shed was built, Natalie examines the surveyor’s plan of the property and discovers that she had built part of the shed on the land that was subject to the carriageway.

In the meantime, Barbara was granted approval to subdivide her property into eight lots and an integral part of her development was that the owners of the new lots would have the use of the carriageway through Natalie’s property.

Barbara discovers that the shed may now impede her development and after heated discussions, not surprisingly, Natalie’s and Barbara’s relationship deteriorates.

Barbara commences Court proceedings seeking orders that the shed be removed from the right of carriageway, on the grounds that the shed had a “material and substantial” effect upon her use of the carriageway and on the proposed development.

However, Natalie demonstrates to the Court that the placement of the shed was at the widest section of the carriageway, so that vehicles could still have easy use of the carriageway, to and from Barbara’s property.

Natalie also provided expert evidence to the Court, which showed that even taking into account the increased usage which would result from Barbara’s proposed subdivision, the carriageway would remain more than adequate.

The Court found that Natalie’s shed would not unreasonably impede the proposed use of the right of carriageway and ruled that the shed could remain.

Beware the ‘Independents’ DEAR News Of The Area,

I’M another who’s concerned about the socalled ‘Independents’ popping up to run for federal parliament.

One surefire way of telling that they’re likely to be party-aligned, is when they sidestep the two big elephants right in front of them.

One of those elephants is, of course, the global overpopulation crisis – a massive elephant that’s so readily walked around by growthorientated fools on their way to exclaiming that we have an issue with climate change!

I wonder why?

Australia has a big role to play in advocating for, and ending growth – and it starts by recognising that overpopulation is real.

The crisis is well and truly real.

The growth/unsustainability-aligned parties don't recognise this.

The second elephant is the desperate need

for a referendum on the discontinuation of these ridiculous State Governments.

In a massively over-governed nation, we have this farcical mess highlighted by the recent Covid-inspired state borders chaos, and the huge numbers of Premiers, Ministers, and Chief Health Officers all trying to outdo each other as they stepped into the limelight.

It’s the political parties that don’t want their state branches dissolved, or give their overpaid mates the sack.

This is where a true independent would step in and state the obvious.

Only a true non-party-aligned Independent would recognize these elephants, rather than playing games with the intelligence of the average voter.

Beware the ‘Independent’!

Kayak in the limelight

CLUB SCOTTS in Scotts Head featured on News Of The Area’s (NOTA) front page two weeks ago with a great photo of the Club’s board and manager.

Smack bang in the centre of the photo was a kayak, which has become a talking point amongst local members of the club.

While NOTA’s story was about Club Scotts successfully gaining a Black Summer Bushfire Grant for infrastructure improvements to build the club into an approved Neighbourhood Safer Place, we didn’t mention the kayak.

Giving the kayak the limelight now, here’s the background to that fabulous photo and why we used it.

“It’s a great photo and has all board and manager in it – it was taken a couple of weeks ago,” Club Scotts President/Chairperson Laura Peisley told News Of The Area.

“Back at the Club Scotts' Monster Xmas

Dear Geoff, I remember being offered a photo frame made of elephant dung in Chiang Mai and haggling over the price, since it is poor form not to haggle in Thailand.

It just confuses the situation if you accept the price offered.

Anyway, I didn't actually want the frame, so I offered a ridiculously low price, and the salesperson was so offended that I felt instantly mortified at my actions and ended up buying the frame for double the original asking price.

At customs in Sydney Airport, the frame was confiscated and ripped apart by a customs officer whose name was probably something like Butch or Dwight.

What is the message of this tale? I don't know.

I've forgotten your question as I've now transported myself back to a time when life was simpler and the only worry I had was haggling over things I didn't want.

I think the point I wanted to make was that life is too short to be fretting about things you no longer want anyway.

Or to be taking up headspace over objects that are no longer yours.

As someone very wise, I think it was Queen Elsa, once said, 'Let it Go'.

Just when you thought this hugely popular true crime drama series was done and dusted, the unbelievable headlines and story involving high-rolling Sydney financial advisor Melissa Caddick have inspired a new instalment. “I don’t buy shares, I buy shoes,” boasts the infamous con woman in this new, high-octane two-part story. Alleged to have stolen more than $40 million from clients, friends and family, Caddick disappeared after ASIC raided her home, with her severed, runner-clad foot found washed up on a beach three months later. Starring Kate Atkinson (right) and Colin Friels (Mystery Road), the story is tantalisingly told from her perspective.

The contestants on Hard Quiz aren’t average folk. For a start, they willingly compete on this show knowing full well that host Tom Gleeson will berate, stir and make fun of them.

Secondly, they have sidestepped any highfalutin topics such as 19th-century painters or the two pillars of modern physics for the joys of Rolex watches, Thomas the Tank Engine and classic Holden cars.
