By Andrea FERRARI CLUB Scotts in Scotts Head was used as the local 'Neighbourhood Safer Place' for the duration of the 2019/20 bushfires, supporting the community including residents, tourists, emergency service crews and other people impacted by the fires.

The Club has just announced that it has been successful in gaining a Black Summer Bushfire Grant for a project called ‘Community Emergency Preparedness in the Isolated Town of Scotts Head’.

By Karen GRIBBIN BOWRAVILLE Pioneer Community Centre (BCDAI) has been named in the draw to receive funding from the Greater Bank’s Community Giveaway for March.

The Greater Mid North Coast community funding program gives away $3000 every month to local organisations helping to make a difference in their communities.

The month of March is voting time to help raise funds for the Community Centre.

Bowraville Pioneer Community Centre was built in 1915 and had many different uses before it was donated for the community as a gathering place for the town and surrounding area.

“If we’re successful the funds will be going towards our ‘Fix the Leak’ fundraiser,” said Marion Syratt, Secretary, BCDAI. “We’ve been working hard after the downpours over the last few months, and we urgently need repairs to the roof and

upper façade.”

You can vote as many times as you wish, just scroll down to Bowraville Pioneer Community Centre and click the thumbs up symbol.

On 30 March the winner with the most votes will be awarded $3000.

Club Scotts Are Successful Applicants For Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Fund FROM Page 1 with the Scotts Head Community Resilience Team, Club Scotts identified key built environment and infrastructure improvements integral in facilitating disaster preparedness and promoting the location of Club Scotts as the town's Neighbourhood Safer Place,” Club Scotts President/Chairperson Laura Peisley told News Of The Area.

“The first action to develop the infrastructure suitability of Club Scotts was through the provision of a generator which was installed in 2021.

“Considering Scotts Head has one road in and out, a large elderly population, and is a popular tourist destination, the Community Resilience Team identified further strategic directions to promote resilience and preparedness in our community and ensure cohesion in an emergency.

“The board of directors and general manager are pleased to reveal that the proposed key objectives as per the grant application will be going ahead using the $972,375 grant funding,” said Laura.

HOUSING affordability continues to be an acute issue across the Mid North Coast with the price of rentals and mortgages soaring out of the reach of many people who live and work in the region.

Regional Development Australia Mid North Coast (RDAMNC) has an important advocacy role in the region and is looking to maintain their focus on housing in 2022.

“Affordable housing for essential workers (people who drive our caring, hospitality and agricultural industries) continues to be one of our key focus areas for this year,” said Kerry Grace, CEO of RDAMNC. “These people are being pushed out of the rental and home ownership markets with dire consequences for business and service delivery across the region.”

RDAMNC has an ambitious program of events and programs in 2022, aimed

at gathering information, encouraging collaboration, and showcasing existing innovative solutions.

“We are producing a Housing film to be launched in August this year, exploring alternative ways of living and to help us start thinking about our homes differently,” said Ms Grace.

“RDAMNC is also conducting a key worker accommodation survey, to assist us to understand what the problems are, and how they are affecting essential workers.

“Lastly, we will be hosting a series of housing-related webinars featuring a range of people representing business, government and community, with the aim of exploring new and existing housing solutions.”

Macksville High School pupil wins Lions Club Regional Finals FROM Page 1

Maya Farmer from Toormina High School, supported by BonvilleSawtell Lions Club, won the public speaking section of the competition.

Rohan Shelton from Nambucca Valley Christian Community School, supported by Nambucca Lions Club, was the third contestant winning through to the Regional Finals.

The Lions Club Youth of the Year contest recognises the achievements of young people in Australian communities in education, sports, community service and public speaking.

Youth initially compete at a local Lions Club.

The overall winner then

proceeds to the Regional Final.

This year the Urunga Lions Club hosted the Regional Final with the three contestants: Charlotte, Maya and Rohan.

Chief judge Michael Trist congratulated local Lions clubs for their recognition of some of the district's outstanding young citizens, and for giving them a platform to showcase their leadership skills.

"It was a privilege for the judges to interact with such positive and accomplished young people,” Michael told News Of The Area.

“We were very impressed with their desire to make a difference at a local level and beyond.

Hayley from Nambucca Valley Libraries spoke to News Of The Area and said, “I’ve been working hard at keeping the PRC books up to date for the local libraries, and making sure that the community's requests are met.”

There are many books on the PRC book list, and these vary each year.

230 new titles have been added so far to the PRC book list in 2022.

Sue, also from Nambucca Valley Libraries, added that the task of cataloguing the books for the PRC is huge but well worth it so that the titles were readily available for any students that were taking part in the Challenge.

“I found out that my wonderful friend Shár Horne was planning to go up there and I suggested we go together,” Sian told News Of The Area.

“We ended up joining forces with an amazing Coffs Harbour group called Alone We Can Do So Little, Together We Can Do So Much, co-ordinated by Stacii Lee. “These beautiful people had organised storage containers full of donations from the local community of non-perishables and specific items that were much

needed at the beginning of the flood recovery.

“People were donating from everywhere and we even were granted a free trailer to take it all up.”

“Battling yet more heavy rain on the way up and dangerous roads that had only just cleared from the waters, we navigated vast potholes and large eatenaway sections.

“We dropped off to evacuation zones of Lismore, Wardell, Coraki and Woodburn.

“Debris everywhere, the smell of deceased animals in the air, piles of destroyed belongings in front of each house after it had been gutted and vacated.

“Aircraft from the nearby airport in Lismore, wrapped around trees like paper from the velocity of the water.

“Cars abandoned and washed up in paddocks, shipping containers washed up in people’s yards and streets inaccessible due to the volume of damage and debris…bulldozers slowly making piles from the neverending sea of waste and destroyed belongings.

“Everyone was still in fight or flight mode up there with determination and an energy of organised chaos about them.

“Tensions were high and loss was visible in the locals’ faces.

“It was a high-paced environment, with military and fire trucks blaring their sirens speeding up the streets to perform further rescues.

“There was also kindness in the hugs and the tears.

Earth Hour - an hour for Climate Change THE energy efficient lighting on the Macksville Traffic Bridge will be turned off for an hour on Saturday, 26 March 2022, in recognition of Earth Hour.

This is the fifteenth consecutive year that Earth Hour has run.

From 8:30pm on this date everyone is invited to switch

off the lights for an hour, to make a statement and draw attention to the impacts of climate change.

The Nambucca Valley community is being welcomed to CASPA’s Foster Carer Shared Lives workshop taking place in Coffs Harbour on consecutive Saturdays: March 26 and 2 April 2022.

“Becoming a foster carer is both rewarding and lifechanging,” Elise Taylor, CASPA spokesperson, told News Of The Area.

Mid North Coast foster carers Jade and Brad Collon said, “We made room in our home for them and they made room in their hearts for us.

“An immeasurable gift that taught us about the true meaning of giving.”

Mickalena Hodges, CASPA Foster Care Program Manager added, “Even if you don’t feel you are ready to provide a child a forever home, there are still ways you can support a child in need.

“Becoming a respite or emergency carer is a great way to help a child in need and support other carers whilst also to dip your toe in the water and see if foster care is right for you.

“Foster Carer Shared Lives training is structured as an opportunity to ask everything you want to know about fostering.”

The CASPA Foster Care support team focuses on the challenges, rewards, and the role of a foster carer while also touching on the foundation around trauma and childhood development.

“Often people want to become carers because they want to help children in need.

“They don’t realise that by helping a child, you are helping an entire family to heal.

“There is a stigma attached to parents of children in care, so we will discuss why children come into care.”

For various reasons their families are unable to safely

care for them at that point in time.

“The family may be affected by homelessness, a death of a parent or guardian, family breakdown or violence, or maybe there is illness or disability affecting the parent or child's and there isn’t capacity to provide the required level of care.”

Shared Lives training has a strong emphasis on carers developing positive working relationships with parents and families and the different permanency pathways for children.

Foster Carer Training is a free, accredited training program and the first step in the process of becoming an authorised carer.

To become a foster carer, you must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, in good health and willing to undertake a Working with Children Check.

Aboriginal carers are encouraged to apply.

“It is vital, and culturally appropriate, that Aboriginal children are placed with Aboriginal carers where possible.

“Having a wide range of carers allows us to meet the individual needs of each child and ensure they are in the best placement for them,” said Elise.

Bethany Tomlinson, CASPA Foster Care Support and Assessor said, “By becoming a carer, you will not only change a child's life forever, but you will also be changed forever.

“The pride and joy you will feel as you watch a child benefit from the positive impact you provide, see them achieve milestones in life they never thought possible will change your life and you will help kids to thrive.

“No matter how long a child stays with you, you can make a profound difference in their life.”

"So, I knew we needed to

Craft competition success for Nambucca Heads CWA

THE prestigious Rose Bowl trophy was presented by Tracey Bonfante of the CWA Mid North Coast Group, to Nambucca Heads CWA members at their last group meeting.

The Rose Bowl is awarded to one Branch from the Mid North Coast group of twenty CWA branches.

Each Branch is encouraged to enter eight items of different craft for competition judging; either embroidery, bead work, knitting, crotchet, tatting, or a

selected discipline.

This year’s items were judged by Mrs Ruth Shanks, described by local CWA members as “a fair but tough judge”.

Then from the twenty branches’ entries, eight items are selected to send off to the state competition, representing the Mid North Coast Group.

Two of the items from the Nambucca Heads Branch have been selected to go to state level.

State judging will occur in May at the CWA State Conference.

This year CWA celebrates 100 years of service to the country, by country women, of all walks of life.

“Finally after COVID, lock downs and restricted meeting times, the CWA members at Nambucca Heads are enjoying the freedom again,” said Kathleen Miller, CWA Branch Secretary/Publicity, Nambucca Heads CWA Branch.

“Craft meetings are held in the CWA Hall in Ridge Street at Nambucca Heads.

“Monthly meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at 10.00am,” Kathleen said.

“The new committee for 2022 was elected at their recent AGM and all committee members are keen to make 2022 a year to remember,” said Publicity Officer Janne Henn.

OUR seniors are a very valuable part of our community here in Nambucca Valley and they live in a diverse range of circumstances.

Some live in the family home or have independently ‘downsized’, some are rural and others town-based, while others live in retirement villages, assisted living and in-home care situations.

In day to day life these choices are manageable but in a disaster, the normal routine is easily thrown out of whack or can break down outside our control.

Some key issues may be transport, getting cut off from regular routes or no public services.

Support people such as carers, family or friends may not be able to reach you as they themselves are cut off or impacted.

Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club

IT’S great to be able to report that we were finally able to get onto the Golf Course on Saturday, thanks to a huge effort from our dedicated Greens Team and volunteers, who removed flood debris from the Course

on Monday.

Our Greens Team managed to get most of the fairways and a substantial amount of rough areas cut later in the week, and it was quite amazing how well the Island track dried out without daily rainfall.

Well done everybody!

Clean Sweep!

NORTH Coast Football made it a clean sweep in their opening fixtures of the National Premier League last Saturday against Lake Macquarie FC. The North Coast scored 24 goals as they cruised past Lake Macquarie in all four age groups with the under 13s winning 7-2, under 14s winning 9-0 and the under 15s and 16s both winning 4-1.

NCF appointed their first female coach, Helen Moseley, to coach the under 13s and it’s been a big turn around for the side, considering they went down 17-0 in their opening fixture this time last year.

The only golf played during the week was a Medley Stableford on Saturday 12 March – all other scheduled events during the week were cancelled due to the wet course conditions.

Over 80 players ventured out and were pleasantly surprised how well the course was presented, although the lack of run was very noticeable. Jeramy Ashman (14) scored 37 points to win Division 1 (0 – 16) from Graham Watson (8) with 36 points. Division q

2 (17 – 45) was won by Stefan Hamilton (22) from Wauchope with 38 points from Rhonda Rowe (25) with 36 points.

Other good rounds from Adam Jones & David Rosser 36, Nate Beverley, Brock Wilson & Paddy Byrne all with 35 points.

“Putting 24 goals in the back of the net on day one and only conceding four goals across the four grades is something to be very pleased with.

Juniors again showed the way with Jordan Welsh on net 40 beating Luke Laverty by one shot.

Jordan played to a net 13 one shot out of A grade.

Deathbed gifting dispute

WHAT is the correct method for giving guests a hint to go home when they have stayed well past your bedtime, and you have to work the next day?

HOWARD is terminally ill and in the final days of his life, he decides to give his friend Sarah, a gift as she had been by his side during the last twelve months.

Howard hands Sarah his debit card, tells her his PIN number and says, “I want you to spend the money and enjoy yourself.”

He also gives her his house keys and says, “Thank you for spending so much time with me here in my house, I want you to live here and enjoy the view.”

When Howard dies, the executor of his will seeks to recover the proceeds of Howard’s bank account from Sarah and take possession of the house for distribution to the beneficiaries named in Howard’s will.

Court action ensues.

In determining whether the ‘inter vivos’ gifts to Sarah were valid, the Court had to decide whether Howard possessed the necessary intention to part with the assets, whether he had the capacity to make these decisions, whether he understood what he was giving and the implications of his decision.

In relation to the bank account, the Court considers the available evidence and ultimately rules in Sarah’s favour, declaring the gift valid on the basis that Howard demonstrated a clear intention that he wanted Sarah to have the funds.

However, in relation to the gift of the house, even though the Court determined that it was Howard’s intention to gift the house to Sarah, under New South Wales law, real estate can only be transferred by way of a written instrument.

The Court therefore ordered that the gift was invalid and that the house formed part of Howard’s estate.

If Howard had incorporated the gifts into a deed, or updated his will to include the house, expensive Court proceedings would have been avoided.

Prior to making gifts in contemplation of death it is important to seek legal advice.

This scenario is a challenge; it really depends on how close you are to your guests.

If you have known them for years, it is more than appropriate to say, "Good night, everyone. Some of us have work tomorrow, but feel free to stay and drink into the early hours. The recycle bin is in the carport. There's a swag in the shed if you don't want to catch a taxi home."

If, however, they are relatively new acquaintances, you may need to use a bit more diplomacy. Start by glancing at the wall clock every few minutes and stifling yawns, saying, "Goodness, I've had such a great time that I didn't realise how late it was."

If this doesn't work, ask if anyone would like a tea or coffee, which is understood by most people to be 'time to wrap up the evening' lingo.

If they say they'd rather stick to the gin and tonics, then you will have to up the ante.

Perhaps you could introduce an activity you know they will hate.

A Quordle challenge, for example.

Or Monopoly. Or Just Dance Nintendo.

If they are up for any of these suggestions, make sure that next time you catch up, you make it at their house, so you can leave any time you want to.

Burrapine Community Hall to celebrate Centenary

IN May this year, Burrapine Community Hall, situated approximately fifteen kilometres inland from the famous ‘Pub with No Beer’ at Taylors Arm, will be celebrating its Centenary.

Originally thriving dairy country, Burrapine now boasts a population of around 80 residents, mostly beef cattle and a few hobby farms.

It all started for the Hall back in 1920, when six locals each donated £5 and formed a fundraising committee.

William Lynch donated the land and the timber was cut by George Kilmore. £125 was eventually raised, which in those days was equal to a year's income.

Gone are the days when people from near and far travelled by horse and sulky to attend functions at the Hall.

About 150 people turned up for the Opening Ceremony on 10 May 1922, where the blue ribbon was cut by the community’s

oldest resident, 89-year-old Mrs Helen Steward.

Sports were held on the sports ground in William Lynch’s paddock, followed by a dinner and dance.

Food, music and entertainment were all supplied by the locals and the last dance was called at 3:00am.

Due to modern technology, home entertainment etc, those days are a part of local history.

The Hall has, in recent years, been host to a number of memorable occasions.

There have been stage performances, talent quests, dances, music hall events and sit down dinners, to name a few.

The dedication of Committee Members and volunteers to raise funds, have kept the Hall alive.

Today the Hall is still holding Book Club, Tai Chi and Craft, and hopefully this year will once again be able to celebrate Christmas.

Coffea arabica HOW long could you go without coffee?

With the recent climate change induced flooding shocking everyone, how resilient are our supplies, really?

If the trucks stopped for a while the shops would be empty of essentials very quickly and I imagine coffee could be a rare luxury.

In good news, coffee grows really well all by itself in this area.

So well, that it's considered a sleeper weed.

Net trees while they are in fruit to prevent birds from spreading the seeds in the cherries which they are quite attracted to, and which then germinate and grow almost anywhere they land, because coffee happily grows in the shade.

How many trees?

One mature tree gives 250 – 600 grams of dry green beans each year.

Each tree can be kept pruned to 3m.

How long to a cuppa?

At least four years to maturity from seedling and the tree should last ten to fifteen years.

It can also be grown from cuttings.

Most dropped coffee cherries will germinate so there should be no trouble in replacing trees.

What it hates Frost. Even short periods below 0°C will defoliate the bush.

That's bad, really bad!

Waterlogging. A well drained soil is essential. They have no tolerance for soggy ground. Wind. The bush is a bit sensitive to wind damage. Wind also knocks off the flowers or cherries that would otherwise become your beans.

Which one? That's easy.

Due to climate requirements, C. arabica is the only species used for commercial coffee production in Australia.

Home preparation of coffee beans to drink is a bit of a process.

You might need a coffee to home-prepare coffee!

The coffee bush will flower over a period of time and the cherries which contain the coffee beans (the seed) ripen throughout August to October in this area.

This means they will need to be regularly picked over the season and can't just be gathered in one session.

Once picked, they will need soaking, peeling off the fruit, soaking again, drying (unless you're ready to roast immediately) and roasting.

I hear a popcorn maker is goldilocks for roasting coffee beans.

Green beans can be dry fried in a frypan over a flame.

There is also oven roasting.

This week marks the halfway point of this enjoyable homegrown crime drama, which unabashedly taps into tropes and formulas. After all, there’s a reason why the disgraced ex-cop and eccentric private investigator are recurring characters; it is gratifying to immerse in the motivations and stories of those who step out of mainstream society. The scenic, unforgiving setting in outback NT doesn’t hurt, either, adding another sense of otherness to the mystery. Tonight our American ex-cop, Ted (Thomas Jane), and PI with a shady past, Amanda (Nicole Chamoun) find their investigation getting more difficult, just as Ted receives some bombshell news from his wife Kelly (Radha Mitchell).

The world feels like a crazy place at the moment.

But if tuning into a series that helps you forget the headlines and news is a high priority, this American science fiction drama could be your remedy. Just beware: it’ll probably make your head spin. So far, the story of two families’ lives torn apart by a massive sinkhole in LA – which also happens to be a portal – has either frazzled or thrilled viewers. But it’s so over the top, weakly acted and confusingly written that it’s a sure-fire distraction. Tonight, a super storm causes chaos, while Gavin (Eoin Macken) embarks on a journey into his past, which might be the key to saving his family in the present. It’s exhausting, in a diverting way.

ANOTHER championship down and what a final it was.

The Minor Pairs finished on Sunday 13 March with a sigh of relief from Bowls Organiser Mick Boyle.
