about the tragic murders of three Aboriginal children from Bowraville.

Evelyn Greenup, Clinton Speedy Duroux and Colleen Walker-Craig, three much loved and missed children, ranging in ages from 4 to 16, vanished over a five month period from September 1990.

Information into the murders that leads to a conviction has increased to $1 million for each child, a decision that was made after discussion with the families.

NSW Attorney General Mark Speakman said, “Around 30 years ago three Aboriginal children Clinton, Evelyn and Colleen - went missing in Bowraville.

“One person was charged with

acquitted.”

“Colleen’s remains have never been found, and no-one has been charged with her murder.”

Both four-year-old Evelyn Greenup and Clinton SpeedyDuroux’s remains were found on separate searches in bushland near Congarinni Road in 1991.

“These events have devastated the Bowraville families, and indeed the entire Bowraville community,” said Mr Speakman.

This devastation is felt widely across the community that this paper serves, and beyond.

Mr Speakman explains, “The double jeopardy rule means that the prosecution has only one go at a prosecution.

“So if someone is acquitted that

double jeopardy rule now mean that, “An application can be made to the court of criminal appeal, where the charge was a life sentence offense, where there was fresh and compelling evidence and the interest of justice to allow a retrial.”

It is in the hope of finding compelling evidence that the reward has been increased.

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said, “Can I say from a cold case perspective unfortunately there are cases where you run out of leads.

“And this is one of those cases.

“And often when this happens we need the community to step up and a million dollar reward is what we are hoping will make

Community hopes to ‘Save Nambucca River’ FROM Page 1

Council back in September 2020, providing an outline of the multi-faceted issues with river flow and quality.

Some of the issues listed were the siltation of the river with sand forming bars and islands, overfishing, and water pollution.

Mr Hughes said, “I’ve fished this river for most of my life and the depth of degradation is immense, with depletion of fish stock, and almost non-navigable channels.”

Everyone present was in complete agreement with Mr Hughes.

Oyster farmer James Ford could not attend the meeting, but sent in a statement which read, “There are around 25-50

percent of oysters found dead in the trays, and there is no marine growth on rocks.”

Gumbaynggirr Elder Uncle Bud Marshall talked about the lack of life and fish in the river.

Mr Marshall said what fish are present have large holes and sores on their sides.

Other attendants spoke about agricultural runoff and water sharing up river, reducing the flow and muddying the banks right down to the Golf Course and into the rivermouth itself.

Most people got to have their say on issues facing the river, and suggest solutions to try to rectify some of the damage already caused.

The six main threats were identified as the V-Wall/ causeway, agricultural runoff, water sharing up river,

depletion of natural sand banks and sea bars, rising sea levels and safety concerns for stranded vessels with no access at the rivermouth for Coastguard to leave the river by a direct route.

A sub-Committee was formed at the meeting with approximately fifteen members, with Darrell Hughes as President. The subCommittee will look at the issues listed, contact relevant state and federal agencies in regards to water management in the Nambucca region, and collect data.

News Of The Area contacted Nambucca Valley Council and spoke with Daniel Walsh, Manager of Development and Environment.

Mr Walsh said, “Nambucca

“There is historical activity of dredging without much success.

“Council only takes part in riverbank restoration works as part of the river being an asset to the Nambucca region.

“Council needs to get permission from state and federal agencies for any council activity or action involving the river system.”

State and federal agencies involved with river management would be Crown Lands, NSW Water, Transport NSW, Department of Industry, and NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, just to name a few.

Nambucca Valley Council

would need to liaise or work in conjunction with these agencies on any matter regarding the Nambucca River.

Anyone interested in joining Save Nambucca River can take part in their monthly meeting to be held on the first Sunday of the month.

The first meeting will be held on 6 March in Bellwood Park on Stuart Island for an 11:00 am start.

ON February 13, 2008, the Australian Prime Minister Keven Rudd moved a National Apology to Australia’s Indigenous Peoples in the House of Representatives, Parliament House, Canberra.

This was the first order of business of the new Parliament and it passed with bipartisan support.

“We reflect on their past mistreatment.

“We reflect in particular on the mistreatment of those who were Stolen Generations - this blemished chapter in our nation's history.

“The time has now come for the nation to turn a new page in Australia’s history by righting the wrongs of the past and so moving forward with confidence to the future.

“We apologise for the laws and policies of successive

Parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these fellow Australians.

“We apologise especially for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, their communities and their country.

“For the pain, suffering and hurt of these Stolen Generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry,” said Prime Minister Keven Rudd on that day fourteen years ago.

The Anniversary of the National Apology is now celebrated annually on 13 February.

The Healing Foundation CEO Fiona Peterson said, “Assimilation policies that led to the Stolen Generations continued right up until the 1970s and many of those affected by the “trauma are still alive today.

“Stolen children lost connection to family, land, culture and language and were taken to homes and institutions where they were often abused, neglected and unloved.

“The mothers, fathers, families and communities who were left behind also suffered from the loss.”

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) conducted a report which estimates that more than 27,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and over in 2018-2019 were survivors of the Stolen Generations.

“In 2018-19, there were an estimated 33,600 Stolen Generations survivors,” said AIHW spokesperson Dr Fadwa

Al-Yaman in June 2021.

Stolen Generations survivors, according to the report, are more likely to face socio-economic challenges, discrimination, face actual or threatened harm, have a severe or profound disability, suffer from poor mental health, and less likely to own their own home.

For the same period approximately 142,000 Indigenous people aged eighteen and over were descendants of members of the Stolen Generations (including 13,2000 people who were themselves Stolen Generation survivors).

According to Dr Fadwa AlYaman, in 2022, all living Stolen Generation Survivors will be 50 years and over.

Council update on Ingenia Lifestyle development

NAMBUCCA Shire Council has received high numbers of emails and submissions regarding Ingenia Lifetysle’s touted Scotts Head development, with many outlining reasons locals believe the development shouldn’t go ahead.

The volume of submissions shows the concerns of the community regarding this particular development.

As previously reported, to date Nambucca Council has not received a Development Application (DA) from Ingenia Lifestyle.

Robert Hunt, Acting General Manager, Nambucca Valley Council said, “Council will be undertaking extensive community consultation as part of the development assessment process once a DA has been submitted.

“There will be plenty of time for public meetings etc once a DA is received, we won’t be rushing this through given the community opposition.”

Mr Hunt indicated that Council and Councillors will not be making any public

comment until a DA has been received.

“Council needs to be properly informed to make a decision, and if Council makes public comments, expressing their views before a DA is received it could preclude a councillor or Council from the decisionmaking process.”

Mr Hunt stated that Ingenia will have to pay DA and other contribution fees.

As a manufactured home estate, the Ingenia development will not have to pay development contributions on the value of the houses.

“Ingenia will have to make development contributions to the Council.”

“Ingenia will be having the houses manufactured off-site and placed there later, they will not have to pay a development contribution on the value of the houses,” said Robert Hunt.

As with other manufactured home

estates in NSW, Ingenia will pay rates on the value of the whole site, not individual homes.

This is considerably less than if the Council rated each house individually.

Mr Hunt said, “Manufactured home estates don’t pay rates on individual sites, but only on the whole parcel.

“This makes more affordable housing, however, they are using all the available infrastructure that ratepayers have paid for or contributed too, so it seems unfair that these estates do not pay rates.”

Council has advised that any submissions received relating to the Ingenia development prior to DA lodgement will not be taken into consideration.

Council is requesting that residents wait until a DA is received, then make a submission to Council during the advertised public consultation period.

Ingenia is holding a Community Information Day on Saturday 19 February at Macksville/ Scotts Head Surf Club from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

STUARTS Point local Wayne Mason has deservedly been awarded an Order of Australia Medal for ‘services to the community in a range of roles’.

Wayne is a former National Serviceman who served in Vietnam as an infantry soldier.

His service to the community has been long and varied.

Third time lucky for Woodstock in the Valley

“It is very important to the organisers that the festival is held in a way that captures the spirit of Woodstock and it was felt the requirements didn’t support that.

“The line-up is unchanged and we’re very grateful to all of the acts for sticking with us,

Local Environmentalists Hope For Koala Action

By Andrew VIVIAN MANY people have welcomed the news that Federal Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley has designated koalas as an endangered species in NSW, Victoria and Queensland.

Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan said the Mid North Coast proudly boasts one of the largest koala populations of any electorate in the country but to see them now officially registered as endangered is concerning.

Mr Conaghan said there have been multiple rounds of government funding at both a state and federal level dedicated specifically to the Cowper koala population as

well as generous contributions to their conservation from non-government sources made to the koala hospital, and he is confident that this will continue.

Mr Conaghan said the $50 million of federal funding announced at the end of January will go towards restoring koala habitat, improving understanding of koala populations, supporting training in koala treatment and care, and strengthening research into koala health outcomes.

“I look forward to seeing the direct benefit to Cowper given our koala credentials and the importance our region plays in their overall population numbers,” he said.

Spokesperson for the Great Koala National Park (GKNP) Committee, Kevin Evans, said that evidence has been mounting for years to support the conservation status change.

He said the reasons for the dramatic decline of koalas are complex, but major factors are the significant weakening of land clearing laws in NSW in favour of development and big agriculture, unsustainable native forest logging, devastating bushfires and an absence of a national approach to koala conservation management.

Mr Evans points out that koalas were listed as vulnerable in NSW and Queensland in 2012 and in those ten years, the Federal Government has done little to halt the decline in koala numbers.

He said that the $50 million and the endangered listing need to go beyond announcements.

Mr Evans said that the Federal Government must work with State Governments to implement a national Koala Conservation Strategy that strengthens legal protections for koalas and their habitat,

including ending native forest logging and establishing a network of protected areas identified as important for koala conservation.

Actions to support this include the declaration of an intention to create the Great Koala National Park to protect the largest population of koalas in NSW, investing in post logging management of the forest to rebuild conservation values funding conservation connectivity efforts to connect forest habitat between protected areas and private lands, funding land owners to manage and preserve their remnant core koala habitat and implementing an industry transition plan to support the forestry sector’s exit from native forest logging to a successful plantation model.

Mr Evans said, “Time is fast running out for koalas in NSW and without stronger legal protection of their habitat,

habitat loss have resulted in fragmented patches of poorquality koala habitat.

“Other threats, such as drought, fire, climate change, disease, vehicle strikes and dog attacks are further impacting koala populations.

“Creating ‘habitat refuges’ in areas remote from, and resilient to, such threats is extremely important for longterm koala persistence.

“As residents of Nambucca Shire will know, the North Macleay-Nambucca area supports important koala habitat and a much-loved population of koalas.

“Landholders who participate in this project will be helping to protect this important koala population for future generations,” Ms Goodwill said.

To be eligible for the project your land must be privately owned, freehold tenure and support a continuous patch of ten hectares of koala habitat.

Properties with five hectares of intact koala habitat

that adjoin a protected area, or a neighbour, will be considered after further desk-top analysis.

Landholders, with property eligible for the project, are encouraged to

submit an expression of interest for the project as soon as possible.

Applications will be assessed as part of the North Coast Local Land Services

He said that, fortunately, there is an opportunity to test the resolve of State and Federal Governments to save our koalas.

Environmentalists across the Mid North Coast are asking for bipartisan support for the Great Koala Protected Area Bill (2021), when it comes before the NSW Parliament,

to provide habitat protection to help save NSW koalas from extinction.

The Commonwealth could provide policy and funding support to the NSW Government to make this happen as a national priority.

Mr Evans said, “It’s time to put aside entrenched political opposition to koala habitat protection on public lands to save our national icon.”

Call to create koala habitat refuges

NORTH Coast Local Land Services is inviting expressions of interest from landholders keen to protect key koala habitat in the North MacleayNambucca Area of Regional Koala Significance.

Applications must be in by midnight 25 February.

Successful landholders will be eligible for technical advice and funding to improve koala habitat on their property through activities such as weed control, revegetation, fire management actions and more.

“We are looking for landholders who already have koala habitat on their property and want to enhance and protect this vegetation,” Asheley Goodwill, Land Services officer with North Coast Local Land Services told News Of The Area.

Lions Awareness Day 2022

By Mick BIRTLES A QUICK look around Nambucca Heads will give you an understanding of the wonderful work and improvements to the town accredited to the Nambucca Heads Lions Club.

These are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what the Lions do for this community.

Throw in the regular upkeep and maintenance they carry out at so many public spaces and it is hard to imagine what the town would look like without them.

is Lions Awareness Day and the Nambucca Lions hope to increase their membership so the great work for the community can continue.

The Nambucca Lions have recently inducted nine new members, four of these are ladies, the first ladies in the 53 year history of the club.

to the Secretary of the Nambucca Heads Lions Club, Mr Bill Shepherd, who said, “We are hoping the Lions Awareness Day will maintain the momentum in gaining new members and we would like to see at least another ten members as a result of the event.

Bill Shepherd said, “People join Lions because they want to use their intellect, creativity, commitment and enthusiasm to get things done and by coming to the stall on Lions Awareness Day on Saturday 5 March 2022 you may just find that being a Lion is for you.”

Urunga mural finalist

A TROMPE l'oeil mural that brings the ‘old’ town of Urunga back to life has been named as one of the best public art experiences in the nation, as voted by the Australian Street Art Awards judges.

The enchanting Urunga mural by artist, illustrator and printmaker David Bromley has been shortlisted for the 2021 Australian Street Art Awards’ Best External Mural gong.

The essence of the awards is that the artists are using public art to enhance visitor appeal and bolster community pride.

The Australian Street Art Awards are designed to educate travellers about the magnificent array of outdoor art that can be found in

every corner of Australia and encourage them to see Australia first.

David told News Of The Area, “When Urunga was bypassed by the new highway the Department of Trade and Industry made some funds available through Bellingen Council for public art.”

In August 2017, Bellingen Shire Council published an invitation to local artists to participate in two public art projects, and David applied and was commissioned.

Local history and Indigenous history were included in the proposal.

This is David’s first mural.

“Most of what you see is made up.

“I have a background in architecture, and I’m told I have a good visual memory and these were assets for this project.

“I researched old photos of Urunga but the buildings as depicted relate to these photos but are not copies of them.

“The Urunga Dispensary is a complete fabrication.

“The Arnold and Co shop uses the same typeface as the original, but my typeface is set up in Photoshop and is therefore more balanced and elegant than the hand painted shopfront as shown in old photos.

“The typeface on the Post Office is close to the original and the weatherboards were measured from those on the Urunga Museum.

“I researched all the items in the shop windows.

“People recognise the antique kerosene heater hanging from the ceiling, for example.

“The first person I painted from life was Steve Allan.”

Steve is now the Mayor of Bellingen Shire. q Steven Allan, painted from life, was the proprietor of Urunga Pharmacy at the time of painting, and is now Bellingen Mayor.

“He was the proprietor of the Urunga Pharmacy at the time so I thought it was fitting that he held a dignified, proprietary pose.

“I hadn’t initially thought of putting locals in the image.”

Including local character Herbie as the centrepiece was a very popular gesture.

And he didn’t mind being made a villain in a ‘Wanted’ poster featured in the mural.

“I warned him that he would hear the same joke about the 500 pound reward every day.

“The faces in the post office are people who I got to know quite well.

“The young Vietnamese girl struck me as very bright, and her grandfather is on the phone behind her.

“Three generations of the Kelly family, the custodians and traditional owners of the land here, are represented in one doorway.”

The painting took far longer than David guessed.

Days could be spent on research or days spent on top of a ladder, wrestling with large sheets of paper which he used to get the lettering right.

“There were some days spent lying down painting somebody’s shoes or the detail at the bottom of the shop fronts.

“I told the onlookers that it was an effective way to reflect on one’s career path.

“Every item in the shop windows was

carefully considered.

“I was having trouble fitting in an image of an antique gramophone, complete with horn, into the shop window.

“A voice over my shoulder said, ‘I’ve got one of those at home’.

“He let me photograph it and told me it was a rare Berliner, which had a horn made of wood.

“There were a lot of Michelangelo jokes.

“Everyone was enjoying what they were seeing and everyone made kind comments to me.

“One amazing encounter was with a white-haired elderly man.

“He read my biography and noticed the London suburb, Hanwell, mentioned.

“During a chat it emerged that he was my old Form Master and history teacher from Drayton Manor Grammar School, Hanwell, London.”

The finals are to be announced in an online ceremony on 4 March.

As a member of the Nambucca Valley Arts Council, Marlene’s work is always on display throughout the year in the Stringer Gallery where she sells mainly local views of the Nambucca Valley painted in oils.

Marlene will display her ‘Art Adventures’ exhibition at the Stringer Gallery,

Nambucca Heads from 1 March to 2 April 22.

She frequently exhibits at the Nexus Gallery in Bellingen as well.

Marlene said, “My whimsical works also attract some sales.

“People seem drawn to my dancing chickens and mischievous cats.”

An important motivation for Marlene’s art is a most commendable one.

“Over the year, I donate any funds raised in sales of

my art works to charitable causes,” she said.

“During this exhibition I will be donating any proceeds to support refugees and their children living in New South Wales.

“Funds are needed to manage soup kitchens, pay for clothing, accommodation and other basic necessities for families in desperate circumstances.”

Defibrillator now available to the community

NAMBUCCA Aquatic is well known for being a communityminded organisation, however the purchase of an Automatic External Defibrillator available for community use has taken that reputation to the next level.

Through the combination of a generous donation from the Michael Hughes Foundation and a successful NSW Office of Sport Grant application lodged by the Nambucca Aquatic Swim Club, a defibrillator is on hand if needed at Nambucca Aquatic or elsewhere in the industrial estate.

In December last year Nambucca Aquatic held a Wellness Day showcasing a range of activities undertaken at the Howard Crescent complex which included swimming, aqua fitness,

zumba, yoga and karate.

A special guest at this event was Michael Hughes foundation's Julie Hughes who provided a well-received presentation on the history of the Michael Hughes Foundation and education on responding to cardiac arrest.

The Michael Hughes Foundation is a registered Australian charity that exists to support change in the response to cardiac arrest when it occurs outside of the hospital, with a strong mission to turn bystanders into first responders in medical emergencies.

It was Julie Hughes who identified the need for a defibrillator on site at Nambucca Aquatic and also for the surrounding industrial area.

News Of The Area spoke to the General Manager of Nambucca Aquatic, Leigh

Eastwood, who said, “In addition to now having the Defibrillator on site, members of Nambucca Aquatic have also been participating in a University of Sydney’s Westmead Applied Research Centre research project known as FirstCPR. Leigh Eastwood added that, “The FirstCPR project involves education and training in responding to cardiac arrest in the community and is open to anyone over the age of 18.”

On a date yet to be confirmed in the near future the Royal Lifesaving Society will be at Nambucca Aquatic to deliver a free training day linked to the FirstCPR project; however attendees will have to already be participants in the project.

(NSWNMA) states the COVID-19 pandemic burnout and the refusal of the government to ensure safe staffing in public hospitals and health services is what led to the first strike in almost ten years.

There were twenty rallies held across the state, attended by thousands of NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) members.

These dedicated health workers took the drastic strike action to draw attention to the fact that the government has refused to negotiate on safe

staffing.

“Our members are calling for commitment from the Premier that there will be enough nurses and midwives on every shift.

“Nurses and midwives have signalled how fed up they are with the NSW Government for ignoring the need for nurse-topatient ratios, similar to those already working successfully in Queensland and Victoria,” said NSWNMA General Secretary Brett Holmes.

Mr Holmes stated that what is being asked is not unreasonable, and is about

Statewide strike calls attention to hospital staffing crisis

STATEWIDE on Tuesday 15 February nurses and midwives walked off the job to demand that the staffing crisis in public hospitals be resolved.

Across NSW the strike action took place in 150 public hospitals and health services.

Life-preserving services were maintained in public hospitals and health services throughout the strike, which was staggered across the day.

Mr Holmes said, “For over ten years we have campaigned for shift by shift ratios for nurses and better staffing for midwives because we know ratios work, they save lives and save money.

“Our role is not to simply stay at the bedside keeping patients alive - we have a duty to everyone in our care to stand up and speak out, especially those unable to do so for themselves.”

General Secretary Shaye Candish outlined the demands put forward.

“We want you to implement our shift by shift nursing and midwifery staffing claims for safe patient care; commit to a fair pay rise above 2.5 percent and introduce a COVID-19 allowance; and withdraw the amendment to the Workers’ Compensation Act that would force health workers to prove they contracted COVID-19 at work.”

Across the Mid North Coast NSWNMA members from Bellingen River District Hospital, Coffs Harbour

Health Campus, Dorrigo MultiPurpose Service, Kempsey District Hospital, and Port Macquarie Base Hospital took part in the statewide strike.

COVID-safe rallies in the Mid North Coast were held in Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, and Kempsey.

NSWNMA estimates that around 5000 nurses and midwives marched on NSW parliament.

The NSWNMA were threatened with fines in the Industrial Relations Commission if they went ahead with the strike, and made the decision to continue.

Police on the Streets 1.

ON 6/2/22 Police were required to deploy a taser to subdue a 29-yearold man in Nambucca Heads.

Police were called to the Short Street address upon the request of Ambulance personnel as the man was highly aggressive and resisting treatment to a laceration on his right hand that was bleeding profusely.

Following lengthy negotiations with the man where he refused all requests for treatment as well as being violent towards

emergency services and other family members at the scene a taser was deployed which was immediately effective.

Police were able to bring the man under control and he received immediate assistance by Ambulance before being conveyed to Macksville Hospital for further treatment.

Police enquiries are still continuing.

A 35-year-old man was charged at Kempsey Police Station on 6/2/22 following investigations related to a domestic violence

incident involving a 37-yearold woman at a Eungai Creek address. The accused man was charged with an intimidation offence and later released on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 10/2/22.

The matter was subsequently adjourned to Macksville Local Court on 24/3/22.

A 66-year-old man was charged at Macksville Police Station on 4/2/22 for breaching an AVO following a domestic violence incident at a Nambucca Heads address.

The accused man was refused bail by Police and appeared before the Port Macquarie Justice on 5/2/22 where he was granted bail by the Court and appeared before Macksville Local Court on 10/2/22 where he was sentenced to a twelve month Community Corrections Order.

On 8/2/22 at about 3:45am emergency services were alerted to a truck fire on the Pacific Highway at Macksville.

A truck towing a tabletop trailer was northbound when the rear brakes on the trailer caught alight.

Luckily the driver was

able to separate the tow vehicle from the trailer.

A fire brigade from Macksville attended the scene and extinguished the blaze at 4:05am.

One lane of the highway was closed for a period of time and TMC created a diversion whilst the load and trailer were recovered.

A 36-year-old woman was charged at Macksville Police Station on 6/2/22 with an assault offence following a domestic violence incident in which a 22-year-old man sustained minor injuries.

The accused woman was later released on bail to

appear before Macksville Local Court on 24/3/22.

A 34-year-old man was charged at Macksville Police Station on 4/2/22 for breaching bail conditions.

Upon his arrest Police seized a knife, fireworks and a quantity of cannabis.

The accused man was refused bail to appear before the Port Macquarie Justice on 5/2/22.

The accused man was subsequently granted bail by the Court and appeared before Macksville Local Court on 10/2/22 with the matter further adjourned to 24/2/22.

Oyster Farmers Tackle Waste in Nambucca River condition every day.

With seven oyster farms perched on the banks of the river, the industry generates hundreds of jobs and is an important part of the local economy.

ON Tuesday 22 February, local oyster farmers will descend onto the foreshore of the Nambucca River in Gumbaynggirr Country, for the mass industry led cleanup event ‘Tide to Tip’.

This is the third year of the event, which is organised

by OceanWatch Australia, that sees oyster growers lead marine debris clean-ups in estuaries across the state.

Social housing needed to end NSW mid north coast affordability crisis

Farmers from 19 oyster growing regions of NSW and QLD. Together with the help of community groups 22.5 tonnes of waste has been removed from our estuaries.

Partners include NSW Department of Primary Industries, South East and Hunter Local Land Services, Clean-up Australia, Shapes in the Sand, and OceanWatch Australia.

The clean-ups are supported by the Local Landcare Coordinator Initiative, which is funded by the NSW Government, and supported through the partnership of Local Land Services and Landcare NSW.

An Everybody’s Home Budget position paper, released last Friday, says at least 25,000 new social housing dwellings are needed across Australia to help end

the crisis.

The Budget Position Paper includes previously unreleased modeling which shows underinvestment in social housing is causing foregone public sector cost offsets and private sector benefits of $676.5 million per annum currently, rising to $1.286 billion per annum in 2036.

These take the form of added costs addressing homelessness, mental health, domestic violence, alcohol/ substance abuse, but also reduced household spending and lower community wellbeing.

The submission also

notes that constructing 25,000 social homes per year would generate an annual economic output of $12.9 billion, and create 15,700 jobs.

The paper makes the case for expanded social and affordable housing, to give people on low and modest incomes greater housing choice.

It also notes the steep decline in federal funding for social and Indigenous housing which in 2013-14 was over $2 billion, but is only budgeted at $1.6 billion in 2023-24. Indexed for inflation it should be $2.7 billion.

In 1994, social housing made up six percent of all housing.

Today it is just four percent.

Kate Colvin, national spokesperson for Everybody’s Home, said an investment in social housing was urgent and worthwhile.

“A secure home is the foundation for stability and security.

“It means you can look after your health, tend to your family, join the workforce and contribute to society.

“Without a home, none of these things are possible.

“As our leaders put the final touches on the Budget,

they need to be aware of the full benefit of social housing as well as the deep human cost of not providing people with a home.

“The surging rental and property markets are swallowing up ever larger chunks of household budgets.

“Some regions of Australia, such as Tasmania, or the NSW and Queensland coasts have seen rents surge more than 20 percent.

“This is not just breaking family budgets, it’s pushing families into homelessness.

“Australia’s common prosperity is best served by a housing system that gives people on low and modest incomes genuine choice and provides them with security and stability. The increasingly brutal financial contest for housing is simply indecent.

“We can do better.”

They both began performing in the folk clubs of the 60s – Keith in Melbourne with the Seekers and Mike in Sydney. The Seekers took off to Britain and conquered the world while Mike built his career in Australia as one of this

country’s pre-eminent songwriters/guitarists.

While the Seekers would always remain the anchor around which Keith built his career he has gone on to write and record extensively, creating an enviable repertoire of timeless songs.

Mike McClellan will be forever known as The Song and Danceman after the title of his classic 1974 hit.

FIRSTLY an apology to our regular readers, if there are any, but I completely forgot about last week's paper.

Maybe dementia is hereditary.

Our travelling bowlers arrived back from the Lake and a grand time was had by all.

Some had their first and last trip because it's just too far with four days travelling in total.

Two to get there and two to get home.

Semi-finals were reached in the fours and pairs with wins in the consolation pairs and the triples so not a bad effort all up.

Well done to everybody

who went.

Covid reared its ugly head again with some catching it on the trip and all isolating for the week when they got back. This caused a bit of havoc with the first round of Championship Triples being postponed to last weekend.

Covid still interrupted round one with one forfeit occurring.

The results were Rowdy Reynolds, Owen Smith and Drum Poletti 23 defeated last year's runners up Bonzi Coughlan, John Richo and Ty Webber 21.

The good brother Graham Hunt, Steve Carr and Chris Brownlie 28 defeated Gary Tierney, John Stewart and Mick Target 15.

Mike Ryan, Billy Blair and

Peter Fredricks 23 defeated Terry ‘The Eel’ Harvey, Terry Snowden and Fred Pope 20.

Sunday saw the quarterfinals played with Drum Poletti's team defeating Chris Brownlie 23-15.

Don Lean, Cosi and Bruce Mason won on forfeit against Paul ‘Astro’ Michel, Aaron Cedelland and Doug ‘Swanny’ Cedelland due to illness.

This weekend's semi-final and Final are set down to be played.

WHAT a wonderful weekend away at the Regional Little Athletics Carnival in Tamworth.

Four athletes from Stuarts Point Little Athletics competed over the two days

in 19 events and earned 10 medals - a wonderful achievement.

The results are as follows: Charlotte Kearney U17 1st 1500m walk, 2nd 100m hurdles, 3rd Long Jump, 4th in Discus, 6th in Triple Jump and a PB in Shot Put.

A great achievement for her last year as a Little Athlete.

Damian Kennedy U17 - 2nd 110m Hurdles, 2nd in Long Jump with PB, 5th Javelin, 7th Triple Jump, 4th 300m Hurdles.

ON Wednesday, four of our ladies visited Coffs Harbour for their Ladies Open day.

There were over 170 starters in this four ball best ball event that relies heavily on team play.

Macksville's Jo-Anne Montague teamed with Rhonda McAuliffe to win the event with 47 points.

Not far behind in sixth place on 42 points was another Macksville team of Carmel Fruedenstein and Desma Hughes. q

No stick for Slick PAUL and Amy purchased a vacant block of land and are ready to build their new home.

They settle on Slick Homes as their builder.

During the negotiations with Slick Homes, Amy was adamant that the house had to be ready for Christmas the following year.

This timeframe gave Slick Homes fifteen months to build the house.

The parties agreed to and signed a standard building contract.

The terms of the contract included a 200-day handover date, however additional time was allowed for a three week break over New Year, and other time extensions for ‘reasonable’ delays.

Three months prior to the move-in date, the building works stalled.

To get the project up and going, Slick Homes requested Paul and Amy make an advanced payment outside the scope of the contract, to cover its cash flow problems.

It became clear their home would not be ready for Christmas as planned.

Paul and Amy had now spent an additional six months on rent and were incurring storage expenses.

They sought legal advice.

Their solicitor advised them that the standard contract included terms addressing building delays, however the delays were now beyond the contract exceptions, giving rise to compensation payable under the contract by Slick Homes to Paul and Amy. However, the contract schedule that sets out the weekly amount for compensation payments was left blank, and under the terms of the contract if this amount is not specified then the compensation payable by the builder is nil.

Paul and Amy now wish they had instructed their solicitor to review the contract before it was signed, as they have spent over $50,000 in expenses associated with the delay, which could have been the subject of specified compensation and the contract could have given them a ‘stick’ to encourage a timely completion of the build.

Costing a Fortune

DEAR News Of The Area,

IN recent weeks the Government awarded a $218 million contract to the Brisbane company Canstruct for the next six months of offshore detention operations on the island of Nauru.

This is the eighth contract made with Canstruct and there has been no open and competitive process involved in any of these contract awards .

At this point in time there are 107 people detained on the island and 80 of them have had their claim for protection formally recognized, which means that Australia is obliged under international law to protect them.

The figures show that it is currently costing the Australian taxpayer more than $4 million a year to hold one person on the island.

This works out at $11,000 per person per day.

That’s an eye-watering amount of money that could be spent on other, more socially useful services to our community.

It is surely time to bring these refugees to Australia where there are job shortages in many areas due to the Covid restrictions on International Travel and the drop in working visa applications.

This would give these people some hope for their futures and would be of benefit to us all.

Let’s put an end to this cruel and inhumane treatment which is costing us all an absolute fortune and causing so much trauma to those impacted.

Dawkins Park Concerns DEAR News Of The Area,

I WOULD like to address the issues of the overpopulation of ibis and egrets in Dawkins Park.

I have been aware of the problem for quite some time and have contacted the Council and again discussed it with a member of Council recently.

Macksville with the new diverted highway is now a ‘backwater’ for travellers who continue on to greener pastures.

How can we attract people to our town?

I have viewed the plans for the river frontage and I am impressed with the developments surrounding the park.

However, with the overpopulation of ibis and the breeding home for all the egrets, this park has deteriorated into a disgusting waterway.

The island is so overpopulated that the trees are diminished to filthy, stick-like structures covered in nests, feathers and faeces from the birds and there is no undergrowth.

This area is so overpopulated that the birds now are beginning to spread further throughout the surrounding areas.

I walked the park this weekend and the stench from there I can only liken to a fowl pen.

I feel there is an urgent need to address this problem.

It is no longer a draw card to Macksville where people can walk, stop for lunch and enjoy the area.

Last year I was in Sydney and I was alerted to this problem by a traveller who complained of the smell from the park.

I wrote to Council and spoke to a member who told me they are aware of the problem and that egrets were migratory and there would not be such a problem when they leave.

This weekend I walked the park and noticed there are hundreds of new nests, many young hatched birds and the waterways are filled with algae.

I believe the biodiversity of this precinct is unhealthy and the algae feeds and multiples because of the bird guano.

I do believe that this is an unhealthy environment for humans to enjoy, I am not opposed to bird life but there is a need for a correct balance.

The seats in the park on Princess Street side are covered in bird droppings.

I have had a brief look at this problem in Sydney areas and viewed online a conference which was held in Queensland addressing this

AS well as our support for local communities, Australian Red Cross supports neighbouring countries when disaster strikes.

The Australian Red Cross, together with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, provides technical assistance to nine priority countries across the Asia Pacific, helping to strengthen and deliver humanitarian services to those in need.

Early in 2022 you will recall a large eruption occurred

in Tonga at the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai underwater volcano.

This eruption resulted in launching a wide plume of ash, steam, and gas above the volcano and caused a tsunami that brought severe damage to buildings and infrastructure across the islands of Tonga.

Australian Red Cross works with national societies, such as Tonga to help them strengthen preparedness measures such as training and capacity-building for staff and volunteers.

In addition, Red Cross

strives to ensure that communities are locally-led in the areas of preparedness, organisation contingency planning and ensuring urgent relief supplies are available and accessible when required.

Planning at the local level has now ensured that the Tongan community is prepared and their preparedness has resulted in Tonga Red Cross now being able to support over a thousand families on the ground.

Australian Red Cross teams have shipped critical aid supplies, including water

containers so that people can collect safe drinking water, mosquito nets so they can stay safe from water-borne diseases such as dengue, and tarpaulins, solar lanterns and shelter kits so they can start to rebuild.

Already $346,500 AUD has been raised to support the Tonga Red Cross with personnel already starting their work to reach local communities affected by the disaster and connecting with families throughout the islands to provide support with what they need to recover and

My husband Dave feels it is too late to correct the problem and now he calls me Diane in his nanna's company, so things aren't awkward.

I feel this is ridiculous.

Names are very important and the least that people can do is to get our names right.

A name is a significant part of our identity and many of us have been named after well-known personalities or relatives.

A name, unless it is one of those newfangled ones where the parents are just asking for trouble -- Alchemy, Stardrop and Anomaly spring to mind -- is as much a part of us as our hair colour or our accent.

Admittedly there are people who change their names, but you seem quite happy with yours, so of course you want others to get it right, even if they are a forgetful (or maybe sly) granny.

What do you call this woman?

If you call her nanna, maybe you could start calling her naan (like the bread) and see if it bothers her.

This would be a good way to lead into the conversation.

If you call her Olga, perhaps you could change it to Ogle and then wink at your husband in a 'you started this, but I'm going to finish it' way.

Then call him Dove, just to bring the point home.

I think the issue will be cleared up very quickly.

I think that this is an issue that must be considered a priority, we need to be proud of our town and work toward building it into what it once was.

A river town with a caring community, where trees were planted, parks built and the town buzzed with activity and where the urban committee addressed such problems and voluntarily worked towards building a better town.

The park is on the doorway to our town.

What can we do to solve this problem?

By Mick BIRTLES ON Sunday 20 February the LoggerHeads Malibu Club will kick off their 2022 season of long-boarding with a monthly points score comp at Scotts Head.

Like so many sporting clubs in the district the last two years under the effect of the pandemic have been tough for the LoggerHeads, with the Annual LoggerHeads Classic being cancelled for two consecutive years.
