GREENS MLC Cate Faehrmann, the party’s planning spokesperson, has recently been touring the Mid North Coast on a fact-finding mission, meeting with communities who believe they are under threat from inappropriate building developments.

Last week Ms Faehrmann travelled from Yamba to Bonny Hills meeting with community members crying for help to stop developments that threaten to swallow their small coastal villages, and wipe out extremely important wildlife habitat.

“Up and down the

NSW coast, I’m seeing developments that will be economic, social and environmental disasters if they’re allowed to go ahead,” said Ms Faehrmann.

Many residents believe their concerns are not listened to by local councils, and feel powerless to affect the planning development process.

Cate Faehrmann said, “Stay tuned for our new campaign to ensure local communities can have control over the planning decisions that affect them and their local environment.”

“South West Rocks is to grow by a further 1900 people, 50 percent of the Kempsey Shire’s new development allocation,” said Councillor Arthur Bain, Kempsey Shire Council.

Ms Faehrmann said, “NSW coastal villages and the bushland environments which make them so special are facing death by a thousand cuts.

“Thousands of hectares of threatened species, and habitat clearing fuelling the extinction crisis and changing the face of our coastline forever,” she said.

News Of The Area caught up with Ms Faehrmann in South West Rocks, after she had met with Tom Roberts, a local resident of Scotts Head active in the campaign against the Ingenia over 55’s development proposed for the town.

The Ingenia development has the capacity of installing 250 dwellings, equating to approximately 300 residents over 60 years old.

There has been vocal community opposition to this proposal, which locals believe could change the character of Scotts Head forever.

Nambucca flooding declared a natural disaster, funding assistance now available FROM Page 1 for the weather event that started on 27 June 2022 is now 37.

Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Senator the Hon Murray Watt, said the severe weather and flooding continues to impact many areas of New South Wales with flood evacuation orders still in place.

“I’ve been out in impacted areas this week and it’s

clear this is a widespread event, which is going to take some time to recover from,” Minister Watt said.

“As the damage continues to be assessed, the New South Wales and Australian governments are working to quickly and efficiently provide access to financial and other assistance.”

New South Wales Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery Steph Cooke

said the scale of this flood event requires significant recovery support.

“Declaring a natural disaster is an essential first step towards getting a range of support out the door and in the pockets of individuals, families, farmers and business owners,” Ms Cooke said.

Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding

Arrangements (DRFA).

Assistance available under the DRFA may include: • Help for eligible people whose homes or belongings have been damaged (eligibility criteria apply); • Support for affected local councils to help with the costs of cleaning up and restoring damaged essential roads and

public assets; • Concessional interest rate loans for small businesses, primary producers and nonprofit organisations, and • Freight subsidies for primary producers.

The Australian Government’s Disaster Recovery Payment of $1,000 per adult and $400 per child is administered by the Commonwealth and is

separate to the DRFA. For information on personal hardship and distress assistance, contact Service NSW on 13 77 88.

A MASTERPLAN is in the works for a 1.373-hectare block of commercially zoned land at 1 Railway Road, Nambucca Heads, which developers believe will “assist the main street commercial precinct, which has restricted parking capability and is difficult to expand due to geographical limitations”.

Sensory Cove Developments, who plan to develop the site, have yet to lodge a Development Application for the property located halfway between the Pacific Highway and

“The urban sprawl has moved down from Brisbane and up from Sydney to arrive at its halfway point in

Nambucca Heads.

“With an increase in residential housing and very little commercial progress, it is hoped that this development will help cater for the growth in population and holiday popularity.”

Planning commences on Friday 27 May 2022 and a Masterplan is set to be prepared by October 2022, pending the level of interest.

MEMBERS of the Kalang River Forest Alliance are passionate about protecting the area that feeds the Bellinger, Nambucca and Kalang Rivers from potential damage by logging.

Kath Kelly, spokesperson for the Kalang River Forest Alliance, said, “The Kalang Headwaters are renowned and well scientifically-documented as being incredibly steep and prone to massive erosion and destabilisation following mechanical disturbances.

“Bulldozing done by the Forestry Corporation (FCNSW) in response to the Andersons Creek fire in late 2019 has shown us how vulnerable this landscape is, with massive erosion, sediment pollution of the Kalang River and extensive destabilisation of this landscape caused by these works.

“Recent flood events have caused major landslips and mass movement in areas of historical logging disturbance,” Ms Kelly said.

According to Ms Kelly, the FCNSW ‘PlanPortal’ indicates that the area of the Kalang Headwaters to be logged has doubled by 192 hectares compared to a few years ago.

The Alliance’s view is that, if the current logging plans of the Forestry Corporation proceed then the Kalang River will be irreversibly degraded, harming the environment and the immediate economy.

Ms Kelly said the forests, as well as being native species habitat, are also the lifeblood of local agriculture, with lots of fruit and vegetables grown in the valley.

She said they are also critical to the future of local recreational and commercial fishing

Ms Kelly said it is vital to prevent industrial logging in the extremely steep landscape of the Kalang Headwaters to avoid landslips, erosion and pollution of the Kalang River.

The Alliance points to mounting evidence that forest logging operations of FCNSW are financially unviable and loses millions of taxpayers’ dollars annually.

They say that money allocated recently for forestry road construction is more than enough to buy out all current wood supply contracts,

remediate existing landslips and land degradation and facilitate the eradication of weeds across the headwaters.

Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh indicated that the Alliance’s fears are unfounded.

“There are strict rules and regulations to protect the environment backed by a rigorous enforcement regime,” Mr Singh said.

“Currently, we need forestry products until we find suitable replacements for timber products.”

He pointed out that current replacements for structural timbers such as

steel and aluminium have their own environmental issues because of processes such as mining and smelting.

He also said money allocated for forestry roads is for road and bridge repairs in State Forests, for all uses, from forestry to ecotourism.

The Alliance has called on James Griffin, the Minister for the Environment, to gazette the Headwaters Conservation Reserve to ensure that the Kalang Headwaters are protected, water security is maintained, taxpayers’ money is saved and the extinction of koalas and Greater Gliders is halted.

With an overall funding pot of $250,000, the individual grants provide up to $15,000 for projects aligned to four focus areas: Environmental sustainability - initiatives that restore and conserve the natural environment or which contribute to lower carbon emissions, water stewardship and waste minimisation; Financial wellbeing - particularly

for under-represented and disadvantaged people in the community, including initiatives that improve economic participation; Housing access - initiatives and programs that support those experiencing or at risk of homelessness or that provide supports for people living with disability; or projects that assist local communities to thrive.

The ANZ Seeds of Renewal program focuses specifically on helping to build vibrant and sustainable rural communities and ensure the ongoing prosperity of regional Australia.

ANZ Head of Agribusiness Mark Bennett said, “Now in its twentieth year, the ANZ Seeds of Renewal program has provided hundreds of groups in regional and rural Australia with funds to deliver projects to help their communities thrive.

“We are incredibly proud of the partnership and the contribution it has made to regional Australia.”

Celebrating 40 years of music

LOCAL musician Deebee Bishop is celebrating 40 years as a professional musician this month.

Leaving school at the early age of fifteen years Deebee started an apprenticeship as a ship's carpenter and went to Ultimo College in Sydney.

He worked as a musician/ carpenter until 1989 when he auditioned as a saxophone player at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music, studying composition and jazz studies under the acclaimed Australian violinist Don Harper.

Deebee describes himself as an Australian musician, performer, writer, woodworker, and Dad. “I’ve been a professional musician for almost 40 years, my instruments are vocals, acoustic guitars, stage piano, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, and more.

Deebee’s musical career has spanned four decades of musical expertise incorporating vocals, instrumental, performance and writing.

In 1981 Odds n Ends was the first band Deebee formed with three other friends, and the attic Coffee House Drop-in Centre in Hornsby was their rehearsal room.

Odds n Ends eventually became Sneak Preview in 1982, and was very popular at pubs in and around Sydney, recording an EP at a small studio in Sydney’s North Shore.

Out of Sneak Preview came the Nu Motives with Martin Kirkpatrick as guitarist.

“Martin Kirkpatrick was a focus driven musician who would not take ‘no’ as an answer, and coaxed me to leave Sneak Preview and start a ska rock band with Steve Lewis (drummer), and Dirk Dubious on bass,” said Deebee.

Nu Moves (1982-1985) immediately fell into a groove, rehearsing and writing six hours a day, seven day a week.

Within six months the band was touring Australia with touring manager Leith Krakuer, a fiery, highly motivated manager who was able to get support acts with bands like INXS, Kate Ceberano, The Triffids and The Violent Femmes.

Later embarking on a solo career, busking allowed Deebee to play and write music all over the world, spending long periods in Tasmania, and touring Spain, France, Ireland and Scotland.

When finally returning to Australia he continued making a living out on the streets busking.

“Busking is where it’s at if

you want to learn how to work an audience,” said Deebee.

Between 1994–1996 he started to seriously write songs, “every day, a new song”.

Deebee soon had thousands, and recorded them all with a new band ‘Twang’ at Troy House studio in Newtown.

“In 2013 I moved to the Mid North Coast and started working on ‘Thirst’,” said Deebee.

‘Thirst’ is a songwriting journey with lots of original music on acoustic guitar, piano, banjo, tenor uke, and blues harp.

When completed, Deebee began to perform ‘Thirst’ in small theatres up and down the East Coast.

U3A Life Membership for Hazel

Open Day on Tuesday 5 July with a number of new people joining, bringing the membership up to 313.

q Hazel Bow, aged 100 years, receives her Life Membership of U3A Nambucca Valley from the club’s President Paul Coe.

Lots of attendees met the course leaders and signed up for upcoming classes.

It was also a day of celebration, with Life Membership presented to centenarian Hazel Bow. “The U3A Committee had been discussing the possibility of granting some Life Memberships to particularly deserving people at the time of the 25th Anniversary next year,” Wendy Montague from U3A Nambucca Valley told News Of The Area.

“Hazel’s name was discussed due to her longtime membership and the Committee felt she merited recognition now as a part of the celebration of her 100th birthday, earlier this year on 29 March.”

Hazel and her husband moved from Brisbane to Nambucca 23 years ago to be near their daughter.

At the time she didn’t know anyone in the area.

Hazel was chatting to a friend about Roman and Greek Emperors when the friend suggested she accompany her to a class she was attending through U3A Nambucca Valley which she felt she would enjoy.

“She went along and was amazed that she had just been given all this information for free.

“She loved the experience and has now been a U3A member for 22

years.

“Once she found out all U3A offers to the community, meeting new friends, going on outings and learning new things, she has attended many classes over the years and is still spreading the word on the benefits of U3A membership,” said Wendy.

One of the many courses Hazel had attended for over ten years is the ongoing Italiano Per Piacere run by Jan Thomas.

Jan described her longtime friend as vibrant, gregarious, stylish and intellectually stimulating.

“Hazel enjoys conversations with

substance, likes to read a lot, particularly biographies,” said Jan. Hazel has always kept active.

She was introduced to QiGong through U3A and enjoyed Mathew Carr’s classes for many years.

She still does QiGong, though now at home, due to some mobility issues making it difficult to attend classes.

She attributes part of her physical wellbeing to continuing to do it.

Hazel modestly said she didn’t know what she had done for the honour of receiving the gold Lifetime Membership Badge, but she was thrilled and very thankful.

Ron Purkiss Celebrates 90 Years

LOCAL dairy farmer and beekeeper Ron Purkiss turns 90 years this Saturday, still living in Eungai Creek as he has done for the last 40 years.

Ron is a well known resident in the area for his

big heart, helping hand, and his beekeeping and dairy farming.

In his younger days he was a great dancer, cutting the boards at the many dances held in local halls.

Tennis was another great love of Ron's, a game he

played quite a lot over the years.

Ron and his late wife Gladys raised six children, who have grown and extended the family with the love of grandchildren and great grandchildren, who have brought Ron great

happiness over the years.

“Dad will enjoy his afternoon tea celebration with family and friends,” said his daughter Lenore Donnelly.

“Thanks, Dad, for being a great Dad and Grandfather to us all, we love you,” the family said.

Raiders win the Women’s State Community Plate

THE Urunga Raiders have done North Coast Football proud winning the Women’s State Community Plate at the Women’s State Cup in Newcastle.

The Raiders were amongst the top teams at the annual Women’s State Cup, which featured teams from across Northern NSW including semi-professional sides from the National Premier League (NPL) Women’s Northern NSW competition.

The Raiders started their State Cup campaign in fine fashion with a 7-0 win against Dudley Redhead.

Urunga continued their dominant form with an 11-0 win against Nelson Bay in their second game of the tournament.

The Raiders had their only loss of the tournament in their third match, going down 4-0 to NPL Women's side Adamstown.

The Raiders last pool game saw them have a 1-0 victory against NPL Women's ladder leaders Warners Bay. They qualified for the Community Plate final with a 3-0 victory against the

The Urunga Raiders would win the Women’s State Community Plate in dominant style with a 4-0 victory against Cooks Hill.

Raiders coach Trevor Martin said winning the Community Plate meant a lot to a club which had seen

recent success in North Coast competition.

“It’s going to sit at the top of the trophy cabinet, due to the large pool of teams and higher level of competition,” he said.

“From a club perspective it shows where sitting at a very high level.

“When we lost to Adamstown, they tipped us to win the Community Plate and said we would be competitive against the top five sides in the NPL Women’s, which was a big compliment.”

DURING recent Covid-19 lockdowns Christopher Robinson took the opportunity to utilise his many skills, vision and local home workshop by sourcing and resurrecting broken and abandoned bikes of all shapes and sizes.

“After noticing many discarded bikes on the side of local streets and roads, I realised the potential for rebuilding and reclaiming these for parts.

“My belief is that we all need to stop being a ‘throw-away society’ and start reusing the resources we have,” Chris commented.

Locals and visitors to Stuarts Point are now enjoying the services of Stuarts Point Bikes, a local small business established by Chris specialising in push bike hire, repairs, maintenance and custom cycle building.

Along with a sincere respect for recycling (pun intended), and a whimsical affinity with ‘Winnie the Pooh’, Chris has a reverence for working with a variety of his

International Singer/Songwriter To Play Scotts Hub POPULAR Scott’s Head caferestaurant Scotts Hub will host a much anticipated intimate solo concert by world-travelled musician and composer Paul Fogarty on August 20.

It’s almost a year since prolific singer-songwriter Paul Fogarty moved his family from Europe back home to Australia due to the adverse effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We had always planned to move back to Oz at some point but Covid gave us a definite push,” Fogarty says.

Paul spent most of the past 20 years based in Germany writing songs for television, film and commercials and playing concerts and festivals throughout the Euro zone.

His songs have been heard by half-a-billion people after featuring in ground-breaking prime time TV shows, dramas and mini-series.

Both his daughters grew up near Stuttgart where Fogarty established his own recording studio and headquartered his songwriting and production operation through most of the 2000s.

Born on a small farm near Toowoomba in the 60s Fogarty began writing songs at fifteen and has played 3000 live gigs in the interim.

Although the songwriting bug has never abated, Fogarty secured a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Queensland in 1992 and worked mainly as an investigative reporter, public relations manager and national editor for ThomsonReuters.

“I wasn’t even aware you could be a full time musician and make an income through publishing, live performances and royalty payments,” Fogarty says.

“I was a kind of poor man’s Clark Kent,” he says.

“By day I was a mildmannered reporter but by night I was writing heart-felt love songs and delicate chord progressions and playing them for people in dark little cafes.

“Hundreds of songs came into his head during his dreams.

“I would wake up every morning with a new song in my head,” he says.

“It had a way of sorting my brain and my emotions out and it certainly beat spending a fortune on psychotherapy.”

Fogarty kept writing songs in his spare time, playing festivals and showcases and working on his music until his girlfriend convinced him to go full-time with his music in September of 2000.

Fogarty’s songs were picked up by ABC Music publishing and received national radio airplay for q Paul was a successful journalist before turning his talents to music full time.

Crucial results in latest round Bowraville of Group 2 Rugby League Saturday Golf

WITH this year’s finals series getting underway next month, last weekend saw some crucial results in the latest round of the Tooheys New Group 2 Rugby League season.

The South Grafton Rebels snapped Woolgoolga Seahorses eight game winning streak with a 32-26 win at Woolgoolga Sports Ground.

The Orara Valley Axemen moved equal on points with the Seahorses at the top of the ladder with a 44-10 win at home against the Nambucca Heads Roosters.

The Seahorses remain on top of the ladder with a superior for and against, as this year's minor premiership looks set to come down to the wire with both sides meeting this weekend.

AFTER another week of inclement weather, The Macksville Auto Salon Single Stableford went ahead with the course in better condition than expected.

Club captain John Fortescue surprisingly declared the whole course playable.

John Dowzard had no trouble coming in as the winner with 40 points.

Mike Simpson was runner up.

Straight shooters were Mike Simpson nearest the pin in A grade, Steve Hunt (B) and Neil Cuneen in C grade.

The only other competition for the week was the mid week competition won by Andrew Black ahead of Luke Laverty.

The Ellis's Steve and son Curtis weren't far behind.

Thursday Social bowls has had great numbers and again, a fun morning is had by all those who attend.

Sure, there is the odd wrong bias and long and short bowls, but we are all there to keep improving and enjoy the game with friends. q Three of our wonderful champions for 2022.

North Coast Force teams take part in Northern NSW Championship

By Aiden BURGESS NORTH Coast Force representative teams have spent their school holidays taking on the best young footballers in Northern NSW. The Force sides represented their region on home ground at the Northern NSW Championship in Coffs Harbour.

The three-day carnival got underway on Monday at the C.ex Coffs International Stadium and Bruce Barnier Fields.

North Coast Force’s five teams were among the 27 teams in six age groups, as they took on other regions including the Central Coast, Hunter, Hunter Country, Hunter Metro, and Illawarra.

The carnival hasn't been held since 2019 due to COVID-19, with Community Football Manager Paul Taylor stating this year would be the biggest yet.

"Since we last staged this event, Hunter has split itself into two programs, Metro

and Country, and we've also added the Youth Girls 13 and 15 age groups," he said.

"In addition to the Force, Hunter Metro, and Hunter Country, we'll also have the Illawarra Storm and Central Coast teams.

“There will be over 600 junior players taking part in more than 80 matches across the three days."

North Coast Force sides are coming off a solid showing at the recent Hunter Carnival held over the June long weekend.

The North Coast Force is part of a representative program run by AFL North Coast, which offers teams at the Under 13, Under 15, Under 17, Under 13 Youth Girls, and Under 17 Youth Girls levels.

Strikers Win With Ten Players

NAMBUCCA Strikers women defeated the Sawtell Scorpions 1-0 despite only having ten players on the pitch for most of the match.

Coach Rhys Jones was given a Saturday morning headache with several first team regulars unavailable, who he replaced from the junior ranks.

“We again struggled to get a team on the park with seven players out of the side, so the team had to step up against a rejuvenated Sawtell side,” he said.

“Taking the field with the youngest side this season, the game started at a frantic pace,” he said.

The match started with Sawtell in control, pushing the ball around the park and hoping to exploit a gap in the Strikers defence.

As the game wore on, the young Strikers outfit began to find their stride.

“Lily Woodward and Allie Hancock started to dominate the middle of the park.

“Allie, who is fifteen, started to gain more and more possession which in turn started to put pressure on her more experienced opposition.”

With the midfield combining well with the free-running Jewelle Nelson, attacks started to build, with the Strikers forwards beginning to cause chaos in the Scorpion’s defence.

A free-kick just outside the area was then slammed against the crossbar by Sally Bell.

Chances continued to go begging, with Jewelle Nelson narrowly missing after a freeflowing movement from deep in the Nambucca half.

A first half injury meant the Strikers were reduced to ten players, before the Nambucca side took the lead from a rare corner, with Sarah Mander smashing a well-timed header into the back of the net.

“Again playing with ten, Nambucca’s controlled defence kept up the pressure until the end,” said coach Jones.

“1-0 to the strikers.”

Coach Jones praised the spirit of his young side.

“We played with determination and controlled the defence.

“We played to our plan and our youngsters stepped up, having seven out again this week and putting together a team to do the job was very satisfying.

“Our strength has always been defence and commitment, now we are slowly developing a style of play that is uniquely ours, which is happy to sit with the girls that thrive on their strengths,” concluded Jones.

The win propels the team into the top four in a still very close contest in women’s division two.

Terms of Will create confusion LARRY passes away leaving an estate worth $1.5 million.

Larry’s will leaves a large portion of his estate to “those of my grandchildren as shall survive me and attain the age of eighteen years”.

When Larry made his will, he only had one grandchild, aged two.

One year after Larry’s death, another grandchild, Mary is born.

Larry’s executor is unsure whether Mary is entitled to receive a share of the estate and seeks a ruling from the Supreme Court, by way of “judicial advice”.

The Court states that to interpret the will, the intention of the will-maker is paramount and that to understand the meaning of the language used in the will, the whole of the terms of the will must be considered.

If then, the terms of the will remain ambiguous, the Court can consider the surrounding circumstances.

The solicitor who prepared Larry’s will fifteen years ago, files an affidavit with the Court addressing the preparation of the will but unfortunately, the file, including the file notes, were destroyed after seven years of making the will and the solicitor could not recall Larry’s specific instructions.

The Court receives submissions from the other beneficiaries of the estate, to the effect that Mary should be excluded because she was not alive at Larry’s date of death and that because he had no relationship with her, it was not Larry’s intention that she should benefit from his estate.

The Court notes that Larry’s will refers to “grandchildren”, when at the time of making the will, he only had one grandchild.

The Court ultimately rules that Larry did not intend to exclude grandchildren born after his death.

However, the Court also rules that when the eldest grandchild attains the age of eighteen years, the “class closes” and the executor is able to distribute the estate so that any grandchildren born after that time will miss out.

By Nambucca Heads Emergency Services Red Cross Team Our local Community Resilience Network membership The Australian Red Cross – Nambucca Valley Emergency Services Team is a member of the Nambucca Valley Community Resilience Network (CRN).

The CRN grew out of the ‘Get Ready Nambucca’ Community consultation meetings held throughout the Valley in 2021.

The CRN is a local interagency group which aims to improve communication, collaboration and understanding of disaster management practices.

Rhiannon Treasure-Brand has been the Community Resilience Officer for Nambucca Valley Council, coordinating CRN meetings for a diverse range of local agencies and organisations who meet bimonthly.

The formation of the CRN has been a valuable step forward for our community and assisted many in their ‘journey’ of recovery.

The Emergency Services Team has benefited from our membership of the CRN, linking Red Cross with other members to aid and assist them in disaster preparedness, as well as providing support in recovery.

In times of emergencies and uncertainty, the Community Resilience Network has played an important role in connecting member groups, as well as providing vital information sharing and

support.

Upper Mid North Coast Regional Forum Members of the NV Emergency Services Team joined other Red Cross Emergency Service Teams from Coffs Harbour, Woolgoolga, Grafton and MacLean to hear presentations by guest speakers, share experiences following recent activation and deployment during the March floods, and to plan for the year ahead.

Teams are planning activities for Emergency Ready Week in September 2022.

Awards were awarded to members of our Team during the Forum.

Eight members have received the National Emergency Medal and one member received a 10 Years’ of Service Medal – congratulations to the recipients!

The next important step is to commit it to memory so you don't forget again.

You can do this by associating the name with something. For example if his name is Peter, you can remember his name by coming up with a jingle like: Peter makes particularly pleasant pies.

Of course, if you have an issue remembering the name Peter, perhaps expecting you to retain an entire alliterative sentence is a bit presumptuous.

q The winners of this year’s NSWVGA Shield were both from Tanilba Bay, NSW - William Osbourne and Christine Osbourne. Trophies were presented by John Daley (centre), the NSWVGA Program Coordinator.

​THIS week the Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club hosted over 120 golfers from 50 different Golf Clubs across NSW and interstate for the Annual Veteran’s Week of Golf.

The fine weather of the previous two weeks enabled club greens staff to present the golf course in excellent condition following weeks of wet weather earlier in the month, with numerous compliments received from players.

Unfortunately, mother nature intervened on Tuesday afternoon, and the course was deemed unplayable for the events scheduled on Thursday and Friday.

The planned two day 36 Hole NSWVGA Shield was reduced to the Tuesday event only.

Thank you to our numerous sponsors who contributed to make this annual event so successful for both our Club and our local businesses.

Over Saturday and Sunday, with the course back in play after over 40mms of rain that washed out two of the Vets Week of Golf events, the ‘Member’s Bowl’ was played.
