News Of The Area hopes to fill the gap left by the closure of the Nambucca Guardian News, and provide Nambucca Valley locals with a source of accurate and entertaining local news and sport.

A successful, Covid-safe Scotts Head Festival

The selection of delicious foods on offer at this year’s festival on 11 April, was mouthwatering.

THE Scotts Head Food, Wine, Music and Arts Festival was first launched in the picturesque beach town of Scotts Head in April 2014.

Unfortunately, Nambucca Valley News Of The Area launched several weeks after this year's festival took place.

Not wanting to miss out however, I spoke to Scotts Head Festival founder, Tina MidsonMatley, about what it takes to pull off the iconic annual event.

It varied from the ice-cream stalls, lolly stands and delicious home-made goodies to the Potato Van, kebabs, Moreish Pizza and Greek Souvlaki.

Local farmers from ‘Paddock To Plate Catering,’ showcased their delicious local produce.

Even local icon ‘The Kombi Keg’ made an appearance.

There was a petting farm and superheros to entertain the children, as well as show rides, jumping castles and the magic of

Troppo Bob. The Essence of Ardour belly dancers graced the stage and amazing talented musical artists, both well-known and up and coming, lined up to entertain the masses.

New to the festival this year was a 9D cinema and a rockclimbing wall that was enjoyed by attendees of all ages.

When asked what effect Covid-19 has had on the festival, Ms Midson-Matley replied,

'Bowraville Murders' documentary to air on SBS in September

AN eighty-minute documentary called ‘Bowraville Murders’, produced by Dan Goldberg and Stefan Moore, directed by

Allan Clarke, is set to air on SBS in September this year.

This documentary investigates one of Australia’s most infamous criminal cases, the unsolved serial killings of three local Aboriginal

children from 1990-1991 in Bowraville.

The film crew followed the victims families over the past three years, through the court system, and alongside the Australian MP who led a parliamentary inquiry.

The documentary is currently in the final stages of

post-production.

‘Bowraville Murders’ has been sent to the Sydney Film Festival and a feature length version will be screened on SBS’s Australia Uncovered strand.

This documentary will also be distributed worldwide

by TVF.

An initial funding goal was set at $138,180.00 for the production of this film.

Not only were there funds contributed by Screen Australia, SBS, Screen NSW and Documentary Australia Foundation, there were more than 1,300 individual donors from the Australian

community contributing funds to this film in order for it to become a reality.

A total of $139,295.00 was reached, surpassing the campaign’s expectation.

By Tamara MCWILLIAM FOLLOWING the devastating fires that tore through the Nambucca Valley in November 2019, the Nambucca Valley Council commissioned local author Carrolline Rhodes to compile the stories of the local people affected.

The resulting book, ‘Eighth

Mayor Hoban described the book to, “At times make you laugh, and at times feel a sense of terror and horror.”

Rhodes spoke of her experience in writing such a novel, saying, “People need to be heard, it is a vital part of healing.”

Ms Raewyn Mackey was one of many people directly affected by the fires of November 2019, not only as a rural resident but also as a volunteer Rural Fire Fighter.

She happily shared her experience with Ms Rhodes and found it a fabulous way to start the healing process.

Ms Mackey told News Of The Area, “The speed of the fire was incredible, there was no time to think…no time.”

When asked what words best described the events of that day Ms Mackey replied,

“Chaotic. Madness. There was no time for fear or decision making.”

The toast to the launch was one to be remembered.

A small pot of honey from beekeeper Lothar Schmidt‘s farm was placed before each attendee.

This being the first batch of honey produced since the fires devastated his farm in 2019.

A toast was made to ‘Regrowth and Renewal’ as everyone raised their honey spoons.

Delicious refreshments were then served and entertainment was supplied by the Salvation Army Band before pop quartet PIRRA continued into the evening.

“We are looking great for the future,” Vance said.

Nambucca Valley property market: “Best we’ve seen in 20 years”

By Brooke LEWIS THE property boom in the Nambucca Valley is showing no signs of slowing, according to local real estate agents, who cite an undersupply of rentals and a rise in remote working as key contributing factors.

LJ Hooker Nambucca Heads real estate agent Troy Vance said it’s currently a “seller’s market”, presenting

an opportunity for prospective vendors to get a “a very good price” for their property.

“This is the best market we’ve seen in 20 years,” he said, adding that stock is moving quickly.

“Two years ago, properties could be on the market for six months, now they’re on for days.

“Sometimes we list a property and sell it that day or that week.”

Pamela Pearse, licensee at Roberts Nambucca Real Estate, said it’s a great time for homeowners wanting to sell and urged prospective buyers

to get in touch with local real estate agents proactively, so they can be contacted as soon as something becomes available.

“Stock is at an all-time low.

“Our office has been operating for 50 years.

“Never have we seen the market like it is,” she said.

“Buyers are walking in with pre-approved finance, ready to buy in a hot market and have the ability to action a purchase faster than ever before.”

Rhys has joined Nambucca Valley News Of The Area as a Junior Reporter, and over the next few months will be writing stories about issues affecting young people in the Nambucca Valley.

ON October 12, in just under five months, year 12 students around the Nambucca Valley will be sitting the first of their HSC exams over a period of three weeks, ending at the beginning of November.

Students have received their exam timetables in recent weeks, so they now know when each of their exams are on.

“Overall I think my timetable is pretty good upon my first inspection,” said Nambucca Valley student Max Englert.

The HSC serves as a completion to secondary learning, and is an achievement for year 12 students to finish their exams and high school years.

When it comes to a major exam period like this, preparation is key.

“I look at my notes, check the syllabus points to see what the exam’s actually highlighting so I

“I deal with stress by working,” said Max. “If I do some work each night, and I’m stressing about an exam and how I prepare for it, I just work and it actually relieves some of that stress.”

ANZAC Day Service at Nambucca Heads

By Rachel MCGREGORALLEN THE cenotaph at Nambucca Heads, located near the Nambucca RSL club, stood in great company on ANZAC Day 2021 for the 10:30am service with an estimated 350-400 people in attendance.

It was a glorious day, with sunshine lighting the service in a warm glow.

Many veterans attended, alongside their families and community members.

Ivan Kinny, 97, attended the ceremony with his son and carer Paul Kinny.

Ivan, a decorated war veteran, fought at the Battle of Slaters Knoll in Bougainville in 1945 with the 25th Battalion. “He’s someone to be proud of, he has just been a leader,” Paul said.

Following WW2, Ivan was a principal for approximately 22 years.

“He has passed on some special stuff to his students.

“The elation of surviving that night I think just impacted all those men forever.”

Brad D’elboux, Secretary of Nambucca RSL Sub Branch, spoke about his experience in Timor Leste.

“Incredible going to another country and seeing how the third world lives.

“It gives you a sense of humbleness, when you come back to Australia,” he said.

When talking about the behind the scenes work that goes into organising the ANZAC Day events Brad said, “It means a lot of organisation, it all comes together on the day and it all looks great.

“ANZAC Day really gives me a sense of pride.

“I’ve spent close to twenty years in uniform, doing ANZAC Day as a soldier.”

Brad also discussed the significance of the catafalque guard to ex-servicemen, “For those guys it means something special, they honour the fallen.

“Every cenotaph is considered a memorial to the soldiers who have fallen.”

Students from the local schools attended the ceremony, laying wreaths during the ceremony as a mark of remembrance and respect.

School Presidents, Dominique Byrt and Tarryn Cook, of Nambucca Heads High School were in attendance. Dominique said the opportunity to represent the school at the Anzac ceremony was “Rewarding”.

Tarryn found the experience “humbling”.

Keynote speakers for the ceremony were Nambucca Heads High School students Olivia Bowen and Abigail Hazelwood.

They began by acknowledging the Gumbaynggirr people of Nambucca Valley.

The keynotes referred to history, before applying these experiences and learnings to the present and future.

Bowraville named as NSW Top Tourism Town Finalist

NSW Tourism Industry Council is thrilled to announce the finalists for the inaugural Top Tourism Town Awards for NSW, with 42 ambitious towns from across the state now in the running to take out this prestigious award.

Amongst the finalists is the Nambucca Valley’s own Bowraville with the town named in the ‘Top Tourism Town less than 5000 residents’ category.

The award application, put forward by the team at Visit Bowraville, highlighted the natural beauty and charm of the town.

Regional Development Australia Mid North Coast calls for applications

By Andrew VIVIAN REGIONAL Development Australia Mid North Coast (RDAMNC) is seeking regional leaders with vision, drive and business, government and/ or community experience to apply to join its Committee of Management.

The organisation is part of a national network of 52 Regional Development

Australia committees across the country and has a charter to drive innovation, growth, and development in the Mid North Coast Region through the facilitation of regional projects, collaboration, communication, and advocacy.

The committees of the national RDA network are made up of local volunteers giving their time and energy to develop local solutions to local issues.

They work with industry, communities, and all levels of government to improve

liveability in their designated regions.

Applications are being sought from business and community leaders who have a proven track record of achieving meaningful outcomes in a complex environment.

Kieren Dell, Chair of RDAMNC, said, “Regional Australia is poised for a period of growth and renewal following natural disasters and the pandemic, with Government rightly focussing on our regions, making this a wonderful time to be involved in an organisation like Regional Development Australia as

Torelli said Platform 21 was developed in response to a scarcity of opportunities for artists to perform original material locally, with most clubs and pubs booking musicians to play covers.

Deebee Bishop, a musician who’ll be the promoter and MC for Platform 21, said the event will bring exciting talent to the area and provide much-needed opportunities for local musicians.

“My plan is to approach musicians who have a high profile anywhere from Newcastle to Byron Bay area and then we’ll also book a local musician to support them,” he said.

Rob’s Music Station, a unique venue that also houses a barbershop and a music store, has already hosted live shows to rave reviews from musicians and audiences.

“It was designed by a musician for musicians and that’s created the atmosphere,” Torelli said.

“I wanted to create a place where people can come and it’s all about the music - not about the pokies and the Keno and all the TVs and other things going on.

“Being a muso, I knew what I wanted.

“The sound in here is second to none.”

He also has over 35 years experience in financial services at senior and CEO level, including running two industry bodies.

Live music program coming to Macksville

MACKSVILLE is set to host some of the best musical acts in New South Wales, following the recent award of a Live Music Australia grant to Rob’s Music Station.

The funding is part of a government initiative to support the Australian music industry in the wake of Covid-19.

Business owner and musician Rob Torelli plans to use some of the $33,560 grant to upgrade the amenities and create an

“It’s got an intimate vibe that creates more connection with the audience. It’s got nice lighting, beautiful sound – the acoustics are really good – and Rob’s a legend,” he said.

“I love that he’s giving people a platform for original music.”

Torelli’s longer-term plans for his venue include adding in a commercial kitchen and bar.

“The goal is to create a hub for musicians and lovers of music,” he said.

“This area is just screaming out for something like this, so I have every confidence it’ll be a success.

“It’s my passion.

“It’s been a lot of hard work, but enjoyable too.”

The inspirations behind Keiana’s Nambucca Heads murals

KEIANA Bateman is a proud Gumbaynggirr/Yuin woman whose public murals can be viewed at the Lions Club look out at the top of Main Beach, Earthbound Bowra Cafe in the main street of Nambucca Heads, and at Nambucca Heads Public School.

Keiana’s work is bright, colourful, and shows her connection to Country and her heritage.

“Being a saltwater woman my inspiration always comes from the rivers and oceans,” Keiana said.

“I see, feel and gather inspiration from the animals, colours, sites, movement of the water and the strength of our ancestors roaming alongside us.”

Keiana has received from her Uncle Bud who, “Always helps inspire me and continues to pass on his knowledge and stories to me that will live on

forever,” and from watching her Aunty Nat paint, mixing paints and creating when she was younger, Keiana developed a love for painting.

The importance of students developing a pathway and being assisted by their teachers can be seen in the support that Keiana received from her teacher at Nambucca Heads High School.

“Angela Bagordo was my art teacher and she was amazing,” Keiana said.

“She helped expand every aspect of my art knowledge and helped push and guide me to create the best art work

He is hoping that a concert like this will be able to happen again soon.

“My journey is about me connecting back to Country down here because my mother was stolen from down here, so for me to come back to this community it is very hard for me to fit in."

Robbo grew up in Brisbane with his siblings, sometimes at home with his father and other times in foster care when his father was unwell.

When he was in his early 40s, Robbo decided it was time to come back to the Nambucca Valley, where his Gumbayggirr mum was born.

“I feel like the last eight years that I’ve been down here I’m still on the other side of the fence, that I don’t belong

here even though my whole family from my mother’s side is descended from where we are standing right now right through Gumbaynggirr country.

“Now for me, being 50 years old, still trying to find connection to Country is a daily struggle in some ways.

“It is very important that people who are here on Country should welcome people back to Country by showing them around.

“How do you connect back to Country from your mother being stolen from down here?”

Robbo said.

“Mum was the eldest of Victor Buchanan and Daphne Robinson.

“She was taken with her siblings, my mum was about ten or eleven years old and

taken to Brisbane.

“My grandfather was a Gumbaynggirr man, he walked from here to Brisbane to go and get his children back.

“He was denied his children back, so he had to walk all the way back here, he was a broken man.”

Robbo is planning to hold an open mic concert called One Tribe at Morgo St Park Urunga 3 July 2021, the day before the official NAIDOC Week begins.

He wants to make this a day of celebration, to celebrate everyone coming together.

Robbo the Didgeridoo Man and his journey back to Country

THE NSW Government has introduced a new $1,500 Small Business Fees and Charges Rebate to help small businesses, sole traders and not-for-profit organisations with the cost of government fees and charges, supporting their recovery from the impact of COVID-19.

This rebate is aimed at helping businesses by encouraging growth through the reduction of the costs of running a business.

Qualifying businesses can

use the rebate to claim back the cost of eligible NSW and local government fees and charges due and paid from 1 March 2021.

These include, but are not limited to, food authority licences, liquor licences, tradesperson licences, event fees, outdoor seating fees and council rates.

It cannot be used for fines or penalties, fees and charges that have the key purpose of discouraging behaviours or inducing behaviour changes,

Nambucca Valley Orchid Society’s Autumn Show

THE Nambucca Valley Orchid Society (NVOS) celebrated the opening of the Autumn Orchid Show on Thursday 6 May. The show ran for three days at the Nambucca Senior Citizens Club, 11 Kent Street Nambucca Heads.

The bi-annual Orchid Show has been running for approximately 40 years, and unfortunately was prevented from opening last year because of Covid-19 restrictions.

The Society puts on the event for the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day weekend each year.

The President of the Nambucca Valley Orchid Society, Grahame Beatton, said that being able to put on the show again was welcomed by the public and all members.

When asked what the show means to members Grahame said, “It’s friendship and

meeting the public.

“We get some people here who are in wheelchairs and they come down here and appreciate looking at the fine plants.”

The space at the Senior Citizens centre was well lit and offered plenty of room for the wide array of orchids that were put on display.

The Nambucca Heads Lions Club replaced the timber on the ramp leading into the Seniors club in preparation for the event, removing some damaged timber and therefore ensuring the long term safety of access to the centre.

The Seniors Club has applied for a grant to complete renovations on the centre to make it even more accessible for disabled members of the public.

According to Grahame, the Nambucca Valley Orchid Society is the biggest club on the coast, with members coming from Coffs Harbour, Kempsey and Woolgoolga to participate.

There were large tables set up with a range of orchids perched on them.

Grahame said the number of orchids on display was down in comparison to past shows owing to the weather.

With overcast days and a change in climate, Grahame explained that the flowering habits of the orchids had

changed, with plants flowering at different times.

2021 is the first time that the Orchid Show has been held at the Seniors Centre, and Grahame acknowledged the Seniors Club for their willingness to work with the NVOS to ensure that the Show could be put on in the space.

The rest of the amazing display of orchids were for viewing pleasure and judging for the growers.

With the location at the Utungun hall locked in, it was time to connect with a local charity to create a fabulous day full of fundraising.

It was then that Ms Lane approached the ‘Guiding Grans’.

“They are a local non-profit organisation who raise money to support local families and children in our valley schools by providing them with backpacks, uniforms and school supplies,” Ms Lane said.

With the location and charity organisation in place they decided on a theme.

One of the many songs played was ‘The Sky Boat Song’, dedicated to the Outlander connection in Ms Lane’s book.

There was a large variety of stalls in attendance at the fundraising day.

The Pets and Critters petting zoo came along, as well as local farmers and producers including Rainbow Valley Jams and Pickles, The Men’s ShedHandmade Wonders, Farmer Pete’s Pet Treats, Myra’s Honey and of course the ‘Guiding Grans’, who had a fabulous cook off, supplying a large range of sweets.

There were also many handmade giftware items showcased on the day.

“It was wonderful to see so many stall holders joining in our Scottish Country Fair,” Ms Lane said.

“The community support was fantastic.”

Nambucca Youthie supporting the youth of the Valley

THE Nambucca Valley Youth Services Centre, better known locally as the ‘Youthie’, provides essential support and outreach programs for youth in the Valley aged between 12-24.

According to Chris Hewgill, Chairperson of the Board at the Youthie, said the centre, “Has been in a holding pattern with a lack of funding.

“We have managed to get enough funding recently to start up the Youth Mobile Cafe again.”

The Youth Services Centre applies for funding through grants and has never received consistent government funding.

The Mobile Cafe will be up and running shortly for youth who would like to be trained in skills valued in the workforce.

The Youth Mobile Cafe is staffed by youth, with a youth worker also in attendance.

“So what happens is young people can come in and that’s a place where they feel safe.

“They walk in there and there’s no perceived judgement.

“And that’s a really important thing to have in a community.

“Where often they’ll go into a service and they just don’t feel that same welcome and that’s the reason that we’ve tried to keep that type of philosophy as a bit of an open centre for young people.”

The Youthie is open Monday - Friday, 10am- 5pm.

Youth worker Kane is there Tues-Thurs from 10am4pm, and at other times there are other youth centre staff in attendance, including outreach groups, who are available to assist young people who drop in.

Kane is keen for youth to know that if they visit the ‘Youthie’ and he is not there, or if it is temporarily unstaffed, to please call and leave a message on 65687777 or make contact through the Nambucca Valley Youth Centre Facebook page.

The ‘Youthie’ is also on Instagram.

There are computers available for use, with free access, and for those youth

who are not engaged with school there are programs that the Youthie can link them up with at the centre.

Kane encourages all youth who are in need of assistance to contact the Youthie.

The Board is always on the look-out for new members who can bring their skills to the table to help the Youth Centre to continue running relevant and important programs to support youth in the Nambucca Valley.

Some of the outreach services that are currently running at the centre are; Project X, a drug and alcohol program, Reconnect Services, Momentum Youth Housing, Wesley Community Services, Gen Health, and a youth health service with a youth worker which will be starting soon.

After-school programs are currently being planned.

The ‘Youthie’ is located at 48 Ridge Street Nambucca Heads.

$770,000 to improve Macksville CBD roads

SAFER journeys are on the way across the region with Nambucca benefiting from the latest round of the Australian and NSW Governments’ accelerated Fixing Local Roads program to improve local roads and create thousands of local jobs in the regions.

In this latest round of funding, Nambucca Shire Council received $770,000 to upgrade roads around Macksville CBD. Federal Member for Cowper, Pat Conaghan said roads are so important to the connectivity of regional communities, and the latest round of Fixing Local Roads funding would help local councils tackle the increasing amount of work required to provide safe roads for their communities.

“With more than $7.6 million being allocated to projects within the Cowper electorate, it is pleasing to see the ongoing commitment and partnership between the Australian and NSW Government in looking after and improving our regional roads,” said Mr Conaghan.

Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey said Fixing Local Roads was helping councils repair, maintain and seal the roads that really mattered to our communities.

“The four local councils received a total of $8,445,777 to improve our road network – this just won’t just ease the burden of maintenance for local councils, but it will deliver safer, more reliable journeys for all local road users.”

“Safe, reliable roads are essential for communities in regional New South Wales – by improving roads, we are making a big difference to people’s lives in ensuring they get home sooner and safer,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

“The funding will improve the safety of roads in local communities, including repairing, patching, maintaining and sealing local roads.

Round 1 of the Fixing Local Roads Program saw $243.6

million of joint funding allocated to 253 projects in 83 Local Government Areas, and Round 2 will see $150 million allocated to more than 100 road projects in 90 Local Government Areas.

All successful projects will be completed within two years to ensure local communities see the benefits as quickly as possible.

THE Australian Federal Police (AFP) is undertaking a recruitment drive to increase the number of female police officers protecting the country.

The AFP plans to recruit hundreds of female officers under a new strategy to help outsmart serious crime and bring offenders to justice.

Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews and AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw have announced a new sworn-female workforce target of 30 per cent by 2028.

The enhancement will ensure the AFP is more representative of the Australian community and help build greater diversity of thought and skills in the fight against terrorism, foreign interference, transnational serious organised crime, cyber and fraud and child exploitation.

Minister Andrews said a new recruitment website has been launched showcasing successful

female role models to inspire young women and girls to consider a career in policing and keep Australians safe every day.

"Increased female representation in law enforcement and national security roles is not only good for women, it's good for our entire society," Minister Andrews said.

"My message for any young woman or girl considering such a career is simple, 'apply'.

“Apply your skills, expertise, imagination, and perspective to the serious challenges we face as a nation."

Commissioner Kershaw said boosting the number of female sworn officers within the AFP and keeping them in the job was one of his priorities when he was appointed in October 2019.

"Diversity makes the AFP stronger and more successful,” he said.

“Different perspectives, different cultures and lived experiences are integral to a modern police agency.

"The AFP already has a number of senior, experienced women within the organisation and incredible women coming through the ranks, but we want and need to do better.”

Commissioner Kershaw said the AFP also wants to attract more people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, including Indigenous Australians.

“The benefit of diversity challenges the status quo, it helps with problem solving, especially during investigations,” he said.

Sworn women currently comprise 22 per cent of the AFP, a 2 per cent increase since 2016.

This includes police and Protective Service Officers.

Recent AFP research revealed there was a misconception, particularly among women, that combating crime was primarily achieved with physical force.

"While some women viewed that as a barrier to pursuing a career with the AFP, not all women do,” Commissioner Kershaw said.

“At the end of the day we want to offer choices to our personnel.”

FLOOD affected small businesses across NSW can now apply for grants of up to $50,000 as they begin to rebuild and recover in the aftermath of the NSW storm and flooding disaster.

The Disaster Recovery Small Business Grant is designed to provide short-term targeted assistance for recovery activities, including safety inspections, repairs to premises and internal fittings, and replacement of stock to help the community return to

business as usual.

Federal Member for Cowper, Pat Conaghan said the road to recovery for communities hardest hit will take some time, which is why repairs need to start as soon as possible.

“Small businesses are the lifeblood of our community, and the Australian and NSW Governments are committed to ensuring they receive the best possible support for their longterm recovery,” said Mr Conaghan.

“We want to see these businesses back on their feet and we’re prepared to do what it takes to protect local jobs and deliver assistance where it is most needed.

“Wherever impacted small businesses are across the midnorth coast, support is available to help them rebuild, replace lost stock and keep their doors open.”

The Disaster Recovery Small Business Grant is available to businesses within the Bellingen,

Coffs Harbour, Kempsey, Nambucca, and Port MacquarieHastings Local Government areas.

COVID-19 vaccine supplies to increase across North Coast

COVID-19 vaccine supplies to local general practices are set to increase substantially from this week, allowing more people to get the jab.

GP clinics that have been receiving 50 doses of vaccine a week will see that figure triple.

Clinics receiving 100 doses a week will now receive 200.

The increase will happen over the next three weeks as new supplies are delivered to more than 110 participating general practices on the North Coast.

The change will increase the number of weekly doses offered by general practices to the community from 12,950 to 22,550.

The number of vaccine doses provided to local general practice respiratory clinics (GPRCs) will also increase by several thousand a week.

So far more than 40,000 people have received COVID-19 vaccinations across the region.

Healthy North Coast Chief Executive Julie Sturgess welcomed this week’s Australian Government decision to boost the number of COVID vaccine doses.

“There has been a great response to the vaccination program, with many people trying to secure a vaccination appointment,” Ms Sturgess said.

“Close to 10,000 extra doses of COVID-19 vaccine a week will now be offered by GPs across the North Coast, which is great news for our community.

“Combined with the increased vaccine availability at GPRCs and through NSW Health, we will see people getting vaccinated at the highest rate since the rollout commenced.”

FEA say legal logging shows flaws in laws

ENVIRONMENTALISTS are distraught that private land in Congarinni North is being selectively logged.

Tracey Reynolds lives directly opposite the property from which trees have been removed and is a Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service (WIRES) carer.

Ms Reynolds has released owlet nightjars, bandicoots, an echidna, swamp and redneck wallabies and antechinus (marsupial mice) on her property and the neighbouring property in question.

She says she has also seen a koala and koala scratchings on trees on the neighbouring property.

Ms Reynolds is deeply concerned that native animals in her immediate vicinity have had their habitat destroyed by the selective logging.

However, the logging is on private property, which is covered by the Private Native Forestry Code of Practice (PNF).

This code requires evidence that “a species has visited or regularly uses a site, and includes observations of, for example, faecal pellets or scats, chewed seed cones or a nest, or evidence that the site has been used as a latrine”, before logging can be questioned.

According to a spokesperson from Forest Ecology Alliance (FEA), a group of ecologists, community members and citizen scientists who are working towards the conservation of native forests, “PNF logging approvals are often granted years before logging commences, yet there is no requirement for community consultation or environmental assessment other than desktop data

checks.

“Until concerned residents contact the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) no on ground assessment is conducted and by then it is sadly too late,” the spokesperson said.

In the case of Congarinni North, local residents contacted the EPA, whose representatives visited the logging site and found that there was compliance with the PFN. News Of The Area spoke with the property owner and the logging contractor, and both said that they had not encountered koalas or any other endangered animals on the property.

The owner said that he had purchased the property ten years ago for the purpose of timber harvesting.

He said that the contractors use chainsaws to limit the damage to the forest.

The FEA spokesperson said, “Locals are increasingly concerned about the rapid

acceleration of land clearing in our region.

“We hope that landholders will communicate with conservationists to discuss ways we can all protect healthy biodiversity,” the spokesperson said.

Local Service Women Come Home to March

IT was an Anzac Day like no other for two local Nambucca Valley service women.

Crystal Wright, a Leading Seaman Communication and Information Systems sailor (LSCIS), and Sarah Welsh, a Flying Officer, friends since school, celebrated their first Anzac Day together in their home town of Macksville on April 25.

Their day began together, attending the Dawn Service in Macksville followed by breakfast with their families at the Macksville Ex Services Club enjoying a traditional tea, Anzac biscuit and rum and milk.

When asked what it was like to be home for the Anzac Day march, Ms Wright replied, “It makes me feel very proud to be at home seeing all of the locals who served and remembering the ones we have lost.

Barru Working Kelpies have been situated in the area for over 20 years.

They have been critically selected for their inherited working ability originally

by Tony Parsons (from the Karrawarra Stud) and for the past two decades by Scott Amon for a combined period of more than 70 years.

The dogs are big-framed athletic types that are utilised commercially throughout

Australia, and worldwide, for their instinctive ability for calm and assertive gathering, shifting and general management of sheep, cattle and goats.

It’s a visual joy to watch for all ages, and a great experience for training pet dogs.

“The purpose of demonstrating at the shows is to let the general public appreciate the value and talents of our national working dog, the Australian Kelpie,” said Scott.

“The public’s feedback was heart-warming in regard to the pleasure we were told people took from our dogs and interaction and connection with them.”

The owner and contractor are legally going about their business, and conservationists say that this demonstrates that native forest protection laws in New South Wales are ineffective and are urgently in need of review.

Ms Welsh told News Of The Area, “I spoke about the Anzac spirit as well as the RAAF’s birthday as we have just celebrated one hundred years.”

The Taylors Arm RSL Sub Branch President, who has been organising Anzac Day ceremonies for over twenty years, commented, “As a Welsh descendent it was a privilege to see the next generation of strong Welsh women achieving high accolades and carrying on to great success in their chosen careers.”

Ms Wright was able to stay home a little longer than the day of the march and was honoured to visit her nieces’ school where she gave a talk on Anzac Day and handed out special Navy bags which were given to the student of the week for each class in the school.

Ms Wright said, “ANZAC Day is a day that should and will always be about something bigger than ourselves.

“They served so we can have our freedom, and we serve so others can continue to have it.”

Joint venture tests the friendship

Gabby and Ted are best friends and after a number of discussions, decide to embark on a small business venture together. Gabby has saved enough to fund the initial capital to put into the business.

In return, Ted plans to work fulltime in the business while Gabby will only work around 15 hours a week.

Gabby and Ted decide that each will own 50 percent of the business.

Due to their close friendship, they feel that there is no need for a formal written agreement between them.

The business starts slowly but by year three it is running successfully and employs six people.

Gabby now wants to raise additional capital to set up another store.

Ted thinks it would be better to invest into online sales and streamlining logistics.

As each party owns 50 percent, there is a deadlock as to the direction of the business.

Neither party wants to sell their share in the business.

Gabby seeks legal advice to break the deadlock, and to ensure the business opens new stores. The lack of a business agreement such as a shareholder agreement is proving very problematic.

A well-drafted agreement can ensure deadlocks are avoided through a chair with a casting vote or distribution of voting rights.

Further, an agreement can provide a clear path to dispute resolution that can involve an independent person who is agreed by both parties.

Gabby and Ted eventually go to mediation, an arduous process considering neither want to give-in.

Unfortunately, the friendship between Gabby and Ted deteriorates and Ted eventually sells his share of the business.

VIEW Club calling for volunteers to reconnect as COVID restrictions ease

Members do this through community fundraising, spreading awareness, and volunteering.

This year, one of the key themes for National Volunteer Week is ‘reconnection’, which Nambucca Macksville Evening VIEW Club President Jan said is more important than ever before.

“Last year, COVID meant we couldn’t have that handson connection with the community, which was really hard for a lot of people,” Jan said.

New Technology & Design Labs to Open at NVCCS Things have changed a lot at NVCCS since Robin Williams became its first teacher thirty years ago, with the construction of several new learning centres in 2020, just the latest chapter in the school’s growth.

The School is also expanding its K-2 program and has developed a tertiary partnership with students studying at Southern Cross University for Occupational Therapy. Specialist classrooms, new amenities, a state-of-the-art Library, an auditorium and new industrial technology rooms and learning spaces for wood, plastics and metals have also contributed to the increased capacity of the school. During the second half of 2021, a new two-storey building will be constructed to incorporate another three learning areas and a second library into the school’s infrastructure.

The School has also attracted a wide range of experienced and qualified staff to serve its students across a wide range of subjects. Safety and security for all students are promoted and seen as key priorities. Bowraville kids take on Cross Country challenge BOWRAVILLE Central students spent an afternoon running up hill and down dale recently, over muddy holes and around beautiful golfing greens in valiant attempts to finish the annual School Cross Country.

Megan Cochrane, Community Liaison Officer, Bowraville Central School, said the young runners handled the wet conditions well.

“Luckily the sun was shining and the muddy holes weren’t too deep.

“The Bowraville Golf Course and the nearby ‘Townley’ farm provided the perfect ‘cross country’ terrain for budding runners,” she said.

Kindergarten students commenced the day with a fun run around the Golf Course.

The serious competitors followed with Primary School students (eight years and up) right through to the Senior Secondary students in Year 12.

The students ran in age groups around the Golf Course

and through cow paddocks completing a three kilometre run.

Nambucca Squash Club serves up a new competition

SQUASH players of all ages entered the final round of the Wednesday night competition last week at Nambucca Squash Club.

The Squash Committee, headed by Bruce Graham, Club President, and Diane Budd, Treasurer, have been heavily involved in organising the competition for close to thirty years at the picturesque location, next to the Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club.

Col Hocking is leading line one on 43 points and former women’s state player Katherine Noonan is leading line two with 39 points.

Garry O'Connor leads line three with 38 points and young gun Jayden Sparks is leading line four with 37 points in the popular mixed

competition.

starts on 26 May and we are holding a grading night on

“We changed the format to a timed event because of Covid--19 and players seem to like it, everyone plays three games of eight minutes, it can be great for all round fitness and we play all year round.

“Grading is important so everyone plays in a group with players of a similar ability, that’s what makes for a good comp.

“Line one has the most experienced players and we have lots of emerging young talent in lines three and four.

“Squash is a game for everyone, it is not uncommon for a ten year old to play a sixty year old, it’s an inclusive game and there’s lots of parents who play on the same night as their kids,” said Bruce.

“The results were a growth from about 15 juniors to 77 plus an additional 17 MiniRoos ranging from five to seven year olds,” said David.

General Manager for North Coast Football, Andrew Woodward highlighted the efforts of volunteers through the pandemic.

“With the global pandemic in 2020, our registration numbers were down by 10 per cent, I thought we could get half of that back this year.

“To get all of it back so quickly and add a few hundred more than what we had in 2019 is a tribute to the hard work of the clubs.

“Club volunteers worked long and tirelessly in 2020 making football happen, their hard work has been rewarded and that’s why we have over five thousand registrations, which is fantastic.

“We’ve seen many people

switch to football from other sports, we’ve also seen new arrivals from Sydney, Melbourne and beyond as

OVER five thousand players have registered to play football on the North Coast as records tumble across football clubs in the region.

Registrations increased by 40% on the North Coast resulting in the strongest year on year growth in Northern New South Wales.

2021 registrations also surpassed 2019 volumes resulting in a full recovery in registrations from last year’s COVID-19 impacted season plus an additional growth of 7%.

THE Coffs Harbour Comets made it four wins from four as they overcame the Macksville Sea Eagles 14-0 in the Tooheys New Group 2 Rugby League, Ladies League Tag competition.

It was a gritty performance from the Sea Eagles who took the game to the undefeated Comets who described it as their toughest match in the competition so far.

Hayle Grace made several piercing runs through the centre and Charlie Dent’s passing game gave the Sea Eagles ball movement across the park to complete their sets.

Olympic Trials await for Macksville Marlin Swimming Club’s Declan Sutton

FROM Page 32 training regime was like, he replied, “I do eight sessions of swimming training a week.”

Declan has Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday to relax or attend swimming meets and for the remaining days he puts in a two hour session of swimming at 5:30am and then another hour and three quarters of swimming in the afternoon.

These swimming training sessions include sprints for speed, endurance and technique training.

“Training for endurance is really hard,” he said.

But that isn’t the end of it for this young man, he also hits the gym to build up his strength.

“You need to get your technique right, there are so many small things you need to know and get right so you don’t get disqualified.

“I even count my kicks and strokes to prepare for my turns,” he stated.

With his dream of being an Olympic swimmer in sight, Declan recently attended the Australian Championships in Sydney where he swam the 100m freestyle event in 52.2 seconds.

Not only was this his personal best but his time qualified him to attend the Olympic Trials Carnival, where the top two swimmers will represent Australia in the Tokyo Olympic games in 2021.

With the Sydney Open Carnival on this weekend Declan will be heading down to see if he can beat his 100m Backstroke PB of 1.00.41sec to make the 58.74sec Olympic qualifying time, as well as his butterfly PB of 57.54sec to make the 56.87sec Olympic qualifying time.

“I look at this as an experience carnival,” he said of the upcoming Olympic Trials Carnival.

“I am going to be against some really fast kids, and really fast older guys.”

When asked why he wasn’t

going for Breaststroke as an Olympic qualifier, he replied with laughter.

“I can’t do breaststroke, it’s too hard.”

Declan is currently attending Charles Sturt University in Port Macquarie

where he is undertaking a degree in Physiotherapy.

“I am very fortunate to be under the Elite Athletes program,” he said.

“The program helps me balance study and the swimming training I need to do

Our course’s flood recovery was going along quite well with 18 Hole competitions held on Tuesday and Wednesday, but overnight rain of over 30 millimeters on Wednesday made the course unplayable for Thursday’s Medley Stableford.

After a course inspection on Friday morning, it was decided that the back 9 holes were unsuitable for play, and Saturday’s event reduced to a 9 Hole Stableford on the front 9 holes – walkers only.

Tuesday 4 May was a Medley Single Stableford which was won by Cliff Howard (12) with 38 points, with Russell Lane from Coffs Harbour (20) runner up with 36 Points on countback from Walter Bortoletto and Heather Gray.

Ball Run-down to 34 points on countback.

NTP’s went to Gary Rumble on the Newsagent’s 5th, Steve McNeil (Coffs Harbour) got the Pizza voucher on 13th, Stuart Johnston won his own ball on

the 15th (not sure how that one works!), and Walter Bortoletto on the 18th.

Wednesday 5 May, the Ladies played their Monthly Medal round and it was hard going in the soggy conditions on the back 9 holes.

The Medal winners were: Division (1 scratch to 25) was Susan McWilliam (13) with 69 Net; Division 2 (26 – 34) Heather Gray (32) net 7 and Division 3 (35 to 45) Peta Giddey 69 net.

Gross winners were Susan McWilliam, Wendy Ritchie & Peta Giddey.

The Ball Rundown went to 77 net on countback.

NTP’s went to Dianne O’Leary and Wendy Avery on 5th, and Judith Boyle got the Pizza Voucher on 13th.

Thursday’s scheduled Medley Single Stableford was cancelled as the course became unplayable following overnight heavy rain.

The scheduled qualifying round for the Men’s Singles Knockout and deferred first round of the TopGun Shootout set down for Saturday 8 May

has been postponed until Saturday 22 May and was replaced with a 9 Hole Single Stableford.

Peter Thompson (17) revelled in the conditions and scored 21 points to win on a countback from Graham Watson (13).

Other good scores from Peter Bush and Leslie Mohr 19 and Paddy Byrne with 18

were on the board at the end of the game, the Lions morale was high, the lads heads didn’t drop once and maintained their tough and physical game play for all four quarters, an effort that was truly commendable and inspirational.

The odds were stacked against the Lions and even though all players gave it their all, one man elevated himself to another level and that was, everyone’s favourite Scotsman, Ander McDonald.

In only his second year playing AFL, his first being in Reserve grade, Ander proved to be a mountain for the Saints forward line to climb, he played with such courage that even the great William Wallace

would have been proud to see.

A big thank you to and well done to young guns Alex Parker and Harrison Lee for backing up from their u17s game earlier in the day to help the Lions out, such a step up in grades can be intimidating but these two young Lions kept their composure and provided some much needed speed for the older Lions.

An honourable mention must be given to Blake Tooheys, a club favourite.

Tooheys turns up to every game and gives his all, he put his body on the line during the game and that tough effort landed him in hospital with a gnarly split chin and multiple

stitches, hope you make a speedy recovery Tooheys and when you do, you’ll be the only man I’ll know who can give two smiles at once.

Despite two losses in a row, there are a lot of positives for the Lions to draw upon, a few more games under their belts, an improvement in fitness combined with players coming back from injury should see them become a competitive First Grade side, a prospect that keeps their heads high in these opening rounds.

They know they can do it, so get behind the lads, Nambucca, and support a great club!

SATURDAY 1 May saw the mighty Nambucca Valley Lions travel to Sawtell to take on the Saints in their second game of the year.

The lads have stepped up from Reserve Grade into First Grade this year and after a tough loss to Port Macquarie in the opening round, they were keen to travel to Sawtell to test themselves against one of the powerhouses in the competition.

Unfortunately, due to injuries and player unavailability, the Lions hit the field undermanned and went down to Sawtell 128 - 1.

Based on Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel, Sanditon is a visual feast. With all the dazzling trappings of a period drama – the costumes are beautiful, the lush seaside setting is a treat – and a ridiculously goodlooking cast, screenwriter Andrew Davies has created a wonderfully escapist drama. Just beware the ending.

The story begins with a chance accident bringing young Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams, Reign) to Sanditon, a seaside resort on the brink of change. Charlotte is keen to experience everything the town has to offer, but is stunned by its duplicitous and ambitious inhabitants. Also stars Theo James (Divergent).

Telling the colourful life story of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, this biopic will certainly rock you.

Charting the band’s formation and meteoric rise through the 1970s, the film lovingly recreates iconic concerts and music, all the way from seedy bars to their 1985 Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium. Previously best known for his work on Mr. Robot, Rami Malek’s redefining role netted the star an Oscar, Golden Globe, Screen Actor’s Guild Award and the BAFTA Award for Best Actor for his transformation into the flamboyant singer, who had to grapple with his ego, sexuality and illness at the height of his fame.

q Declan Sutton, a member of the Macksville Marlin Swimming Club is ready for his Olympic trials for the 100m Freestyle.

LOCAL athlete Declan Sutton has been swimming with the Macksville Marlins Swimming Club since he was six years old.

“I just love it,” he told News Of The Area.

Over a period of seven years, Declan enjoyed going to swimming meets from Coffs Harbour to Taree with his Club and team mates.

These carnivals occurred most weekends through the

summer months.

By the age of thirteen he started swimming more competitively, qualifying for State and National swimming carnivals.

During this time, he swam under two coaches, Renee Pickvance and Tony Kirkadye, who are still training him to this day.

“They help work on my technique, endurance and strength,” he said of his coaches.

“To become an Olympic swimmer has been a dream since I was twelve.”
