On Wednesday night the tireless Nambucca Valley Rotary Club rolled up their sleeves once again and hosted a fundraising evening at the Macksville Ex-Services Club aimed at keeping the vital Westpac Rescue Helicopter in the air.

Locals turn out to support the vital Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service thanks to Rotary FROM Page 1

News Of The Area spoke to Jennifer Dowd who said, “While NSW Ambulance and NSW Health cover 70 percent of their operating costs, a further 30 percent must come from community fundraising.

“What Rotary are doing here tonight is a great help and we are also very grateful for the Nambucca Valley businesses such as Midcoast Trucks, Express Coach Builders, the Nambucca Valley Council and Unite Advisory, all who have been generous contributors for many years.”

The centrepiece of the evening was a confronting question and answer session

by Rotary’s Jillian Ashley with two local men who concede

they would not be alive today without the team effort centred around the rescue helicopter.

Mick Green was seriously injured when his motorbike crashed in thick bush and was not able to be reached by conventional ambulances.

Joel Mason was mauled by a shark when surfing near the mouth of the Nambucca River.

Both men provided honest responses when Jillian asked questions about their respective rescues.

In Mick's situation, he would have been unlikely to recover if he had been carried out to a track or roadway.

In Joel’s case, it was the ability of the helicopter to arrive with blood and then stop en route to Newcastle to take on more blood which made the life and death difference.

Nambucca-based Paramedic Steve Fraser, the coordinator of both of these rescues, was also on hand to provide intimate detail regarding the masterpiece of teamwork that comes together during these rescues.

Former Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew member Graham Nicholson added his personal experiences and those at the event were united in agreement regarding the vital role these aircraft play and how fortunate it is that someone with the experience of Paramedic Steve Fraser is here in the Nambucca Valley.

Thanks to the Nambucca Valley Rotary Club, locals were treated to an informative evening with well over $7000 being raised through donations on entry,

breeding programs to boost populations as well as new feral cat and fox management initiatives to reduce pressures from invasive predators.

“These community-led activities will help improve

the trajectory of our most precious native wildlife with a range of flow-on benefits for other species that share the same habitat,” Minister Ley said.

He said, “I had the pleasure of meeting with Gerry McGilvray, project officer

with Saving our Species back in March last year and personally witnessed these special creatures in the Bellinger river.

“It’s wonderful to see this funding go toward meaningful action in their protection, including weed

control, revegetation and ecological monitoring of their environment."

Mr Conaghan said, “In addition, the project will encompass Aboriginal cultural and general community engagement, as it should.”

Snapping Turtles to Benefit From Government Grant

By Andrew VIVIAN THE Bellinger River’s George’s Snapping Turtle population is set to benefit from $210,000 in funding from the Federal Government’s Threatened Species Strategy Action Plan.

Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said conservation and restoration projects across Australia have been allocated a share of $12 million funding through the $100 million Environment Restoration Fund.

She said, “The successful projects span all states and territories and will deliver practical action on the ground to protect more than 60 priority threatened species,” Minister Ley said.

“This includes action to restore and create important habitat, captive

After reaching out to Macksville Hospital, the board decided the donations will best be utilised in the general fund so the hospital

can decide what they most require based on the needs of the community.

NSW Government Releases Koala Strategy

THE NSW Government has released its new Koala Strategy, aimed at more than 30 actions to conserve and grow koala populations.

Environment Minister James Griffin said the fiveyear plan is a comprehensive roadmap that will help deliver the NSW Government’s ambition to double the number of koalas.

“This $193.3 million NSW Koala Strategy is the biggest financial commitment by any government to secure the future of koalas in the wild,” Mr Griffin said.

“In fact, this is the largest investment in any single species in Australia, and

local communities to conserve koalas, 23.2 million for improving the safety and health of koalas by removing threats, improving health and rehabilitation, and establishing a translocation program and $43.4 million to support science and research to build our knowledge of koalas.

“This strategy will better secure ten climate resilient koala stronghold locations from the Southern Tablelands to Campbelltown and Lismore, which will receive intensive action in the next five years to support the existing populations there,” Mr Griffin said.

“Some of these actions include preventing vehicle strikes and dog attacks, and restoring and protecting 47,000 additional hectares of habitat.”

A key part of the Koala Strategy involves establishing partnerships with conservation groups and communities which include partnering with Taronga Conservation Society Australia to restore more than 5,000 hectares of Box Gum grassy woodlands around the Western Slopes of the Great Dividing Range, partnering with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Australia to protect 500 hectares of high quality koala habitat on private

Man charged following police operation

A MAN was ordered to face court on Saturday, charged following a police operation on the state’s Mid North Coast on Friday.

Just before 12.45pm on Friday 8 April, police responded to the Bowraville area, after reports a man, allegedly armed with a firearm, was threatening people.

Police were told the armed man was driving a Mazda 323 and travelling between Bowraville and Macksville.

Further inquiries revealed the man had driven north with sightings reported in Nambucca Heads and Bellingen.

The Mazda was found abandoned at Bellingen about 3.45pm and officers attached to Mid North Coast and Coffs/Clarence Police Districts established a perimeter.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police recovered a firearm.

With the assistance of the Dog Unit, a 27-year-old man was arrested just before 4pm, in the backyard of a home on Coronation Street, Bellingen.

He was taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station and charged with: ● Use offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence ● Assault officer in execution of duty x4 ● Possess unregistered unauthorised prohibited firearm in public place ● Not keep firearm safely-not pistol/ prohibited firearm ● Possess unauthorised firearm ● Stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (domestic) ● Never licensed person drive vehicle on road – prior offence

“Protecting and restoring habitat will also support other threatened and endangered species, such as powerful owls and glossy black cockatoos.”

“It’s time for the rest of the government to get behind him and sort out the land clearing rules.

“This strategy aims to protect 47,000 hectares of koala habitat over five years, while we’re currently losing 38,000 hectares of native vegetation each year to land clearing and logging. It’s a losing battle.

“The NSW Koala Strategy is welcome – particularly funds to purchase important koala habitat but the key habitats of the Mid North coast could be protected with the stroke of a pen,” Mr Gambian said.

“It’s time for the Great Koala National Park.”

BOWRAVILLE Central School (BCS) announced the winners of their Young Archies competition last Tuesday, 5 April.

All students from Kindergarten to Year 12 took part in the competition.

The winning entries from each group have been entered into the ‘Young Archies’, the junior version of the Archibald Prize, held annually in Sydney.

Art Gallery NSW prefers portraits ‘painted from life’, and that subjects have one sitting for their portrait, just like in the Archibald Prize.

The students had four weeks to create their portraits.

“This was an opportunity for students to workshop the techniques of portrait painters like Ben Quilty, Sharon Monagle, JeanMichel Basquiat and Paul Klee,” said Emily King, BCS Art Teacher.

“Many of the students chose to paint their own teachers as their subjects.”

Parents and the community were invited to come along to view artworks on display and have a cuppa on the school’s new decking and coffee shop.

“This is a wonderful experience for all our students,” said Megan Cochrane, BCS Community Liaison Officer.

Parents and the community were invited to vote for the ‘People’s Choice’ award.

Nambucca Valley Diggers Reflect on ANZAC Day

EACH ANZAC Day Australians collectively pause to reflect on the loss and sacrifice we as a nation endure during times of armed conflict.

What started out as a day to remember the fallen in the First World War now stands as an occasion when the nation laments the loss from all conflicts and as a time we say thank you to the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces in our name.

News Of The Area spoke to three veterans living in the Nambucca Valley about what ANZAC Day means to them.

Ron Donnelly, who lives with his wife Sharon in Nambucca Heads, was a National Serviceman and was sent to Vietnam as an Infantry soldier in 1969.

Ron told News of the Area, “Anzac Day is important to me at a personal level as some very close mates I was serving with during the Vietnam War were killed in action.”

Ron added, “I see their faces when I recite the Ode each ANZAC Day and I am thankful that I was not also killed.”

Nambucca Heads man Sean Norman served as an

Infantryman with the Army in the 1990’s and deployed to Somalia on a peacekeeping mission where hundreds of thousands of people were suffering from famine caused by drought and clan warfare.

Sean told News Of The Area, “When I was on patrol in the heat of Somalia I used to think about how I took for granted the comforts of home such as a cold beer, a

pizza and a pretty girl to talk to.”

Sean added, “I don’t do well in crowds these days so on ANZAC Day I stay at home, get up at 4:00am, open a beer, stream the last post through my phone and think about my ANZAC predecessors who had to live on bully beef while living in stinking trenches.”

Macksville man’s $100,000 win A MACKSVILLE man about to start his work shift has been blown away by the revelation he won $100,000 in Monday’s Lucky Lotteries Super Jackpot draw.

The lucky winner heard the news while in the middle of getting ready for work.

“I’m just about to go to work and start my shift.

“I’ll have to take a seat and process the win!

"It’s probably too early in the day to make any plans,” he laughed.

“I know this will go to good use!”

q Newee Creek resident Chris Ellicott served on two tours of East Timor as a Peacekeeper and will reflect on those who are still suffering because of injury or illness caused during their time in uniform.

Chris Ellicott served with the Army on two tours of duty in East Timor during 2000 and 2003 as a Peacekeeper as part of a United Nations led force.

Chris said, “On ANZAC Day I will attend the Nambucca Heads Dawn Service and the Main Service, then join other veterans for lunch in the RSL Club.

Chris went on to say, “For me ANZAC Day is a time when I remember my mates who died in the service of their country and those that have since passed away or are still suffering because of injury or illness caused during their time in uniform.”

Whatever you do on ANZAC Day this year, as a minimum, please pause and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and their families.

Local State Forests have been impacted by the severe weather events and there are some closures, so check first before packing up the picnic and heading out.

Forestry Corporation’s Manager of Tourism and Partnerships, Louise Faulkner, told News Of The Area, “While some State Forests on the North Coast are currently closed due to flood damage, holiday-makers who’ve packed their bikes can explore Jacks Ridge Mountain Bike Park in Nambucca State Forest.

“Managed by Nambucca Valley Cycle Club under a Forest Permit, this mountain bike network boasts a network of hand-built mountain bike trails with incredible hardwood timber structures in beautiful State Forest, close to Nambucca Heads.”

First Bilingual School of Aborigional Language in NSW launched

By Rachel MCGREGORALLEN THURSDAY 7 April witnessed the grand opening of the Gumbaynggirr Giingana Freedom School (GGFS) in Coffs Harbour.

It is the first bilingual Aboriginal school to open in NSW. Bularri Muurlay Nyanggan Aboriginal Corporation (BMNAC) Founder and Executive Officer Clark Webb, a Gumbaynggirr man, said, “We believe that when our children are strong in their identity - they engage much better in learning.

“Our work is grounded in building the cultural identities, strengths and learning capacities of our children so they are best positioned and supported to achieve education excellence.

“The Gumbaynggirr Giingana school is an expansion of the work we have been doing in our community for the past decade.

“I’m incredibly excited as we realise this dream and am grateful for the support of our community, partner organisations and sponsors who have chosen to walk this

journey with us.”

The school is now catering to years K-2, and there are thirteen children enrolled in 2022.

The plan is to grow the campus to K-6.

Learning at GGFS is centred around Gumbaynggirr language and culture, with quality teaching based on Gumbaynggirr values and philosophies, and strong links to community and parent engagement.

Financial support is received from the NSW Government and philanthropic partners the Paul Ramsay Foundation through the Learning Lives Strengthened in Culture program.

BMNAC is a not-for-profit located in Coffs Harbour that was established in 2010.

It engages in more than 500 people in cultural and educational programs annually, extending its services from Coffs Harbour to the Nambucca Valley and to Grafton in the north.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Ben Franklin, who attended the event, said that the GGFS will provide students with a culturally safe, strengths and inquiry-based learning environment, where Gumbaynggirr children will be immersed in their language.

Minister Franklin said, “We know that a strong sense of identity and pride in culture

can change the trajectory of young person’s life, and the opening of this school is a significant achievement for the revitalisation of the Gumbaynggirr language and for the education of Gumbaynggirr children.”

Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh, present at the opening, said, “The Gumbaynggirr language is considered endangered and on the verge of extinction.

“The opening of this school will bring with it increased awareness of Indigenous peoples’ rights to preserve, revitalise and promote their languages.”

Something for everyone this school holidays

A VARIETY of programs are on offer this school holidays for school children and youth of the Nambucca Valley.

These programs have been put together to include activities that cover a huge range of interests and passions that students may have.

Opportunities abound to learn a new skill while taking a break from the learning at school.

The first four days of the holidays, beginning on Monday 11 April, included timetabled entertainment such as art, jewellery making and music classes at the Nambucca Youthie for all ages. q

There was a free cinema day for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) students at the Majestic Cinema on Wednesday 13 April, and a free basketball event for eight to eighteen year olds at Macksville High on the same day where attendees were supplied with a free jersey as well as their lunch.

On Tuesday 19 April the activities begin again after a break for the Easter period.

On offer is laser tag, a free movie, the Agriculture Matters Youth Workshop, an arts and craft day, and a footy fun day (ATSI only).

The hands-on Agriculture Matters Youth Workshop, located at Bowraville Central School, is open to students from K-12 and includes an on-

site farm tour.

Students will be introduced to a range of agricultural topics, and gain an understanding about where and how food and fibres are produced.

The completion of the packed Youth Week and school holiday timetable is on Saturday 23 April at Scotts Head Surf School where a Learn to Surf program will be run.

The Learn to Surf program is open to all swimming abilities and attendees just need to bring their swimmers and a towel; boards will be provided.

Activities require registration prior to the event.

THE inaugural St Patrick’s Primary School P&F Golf Day will be held on Sunday 22 May 2022, in conjunction with the Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club and proudly sponsored

“Young, old, experienced, newbies, corporate teams, friends, colleges, and definitely families of all ages,” Carmen Kerr from St Patrick’s Primary School committee told News Of The Area.

The purpose for the day is to raise funds to go towards enhancing St Patrick’s Primary School’s outdoor areas with the addition of a passive play area, an outdoor classroom and learning area, new playground equipment, and a waterproof cover over the outdoor court.

“This fundraiser will benefit our children by facilitating educational

opportunities, athletic excellence, promoting physical fitness and sportsmanship with a desire to challenge kids and adapt to outdoor education during a time of social distancing.

“As such, we are looking for support for the event.

“Support could take shape in many ways, and we have provided a few options to consider: hole sponsors, donate a prize to be auctioned or register a team of four

NOBEL Prize winner Professor Peter Doherty is coming to the Bellingen Readers & Writers Festival.

Including the Covid years, Peter will talk about his

personal and professional experiences.

He has penned many published works, most recently the book ‘An Insider’s Plague Year’ (2021).

Appearing live streamed from New York, Kevin Rudd will discuss his past political experience, the post-Prime Ministerial years and his latest

publication: ‘The Avoidable War’.

His book is described as demystifying the actions of both China and the United States, explaining and translating them for the benefit of the other.

Geopolitical disaster is still avoidable, he writes, but only if these two giants can find a way to coexist without betraying their core interests through what Rudd calls "managed strategic competition".

Students pitch in to aid Vinnies Flood Appeal q Students were only too happy to help load the second truck with bags of donated goods and send it on its way to our northern neighbours.

By Susan KONTIC STUDENTS from St John Paul College in Coffs Harbour were quick to pitch in with practical assistance for our Northern Rivers neighbours after their latest devastating flood.

“Students were asking what they could do to help and we had to tell them to wait because in the immediate aftermath there was nowhere to store things,” said Principal Michael Carniato.

However, a Mufti Day was held at the college to aid the Vinnies Flood Appeal, and each of the 1050 students was encouraged to bring in one article to contribute.

And give they did: over $8000 worth of food was donated.

Students, families and staff at St John Paul College and the team at Ritchies IGA Nambucca donated more than four tonnes of essential supplies.

They brought bags overflowing, and boxes filled with necessities, while parents and friends eager to help dropped off more.

At one point the hall had to be closed because it couldn’t hold any more.

“Staff and students were extremely generous with their donations,” said Brett Bujeya, St Vincent de Paul coordinator at the College.

So generous in fact that donations exceeded all expectations.

Local company Faircloth & Reynolds offered the loan of a large truck and a driver to transport the donations to ‘Our Two Hands’ in Casino, a not-for-profit organisation that acted as a logistics base for distribution.

Some of the donated items were on helicopters to

stranded families before the day was out.

It took two trips to move all of the donated goods and Faircloth & Reynolds were happy to oblige.

Year 7 students were pleased to play their part and formed a line to carry boxes to the truck and helped with packing.

The first truckload carried essential items such as baby goods and nappies, toiletries, clothes, food and pet food.

Richies IGA at Nambucca included four pallets of cleaning materials among their donations, which was very welcome for the cleanup.

Mr Carniato commended students and staff and all the parents and friends who supported their efforts.

“This was a humanitarian crisis just up the road, and our students wanted to help,” he said.

“Our young people have a keen sense of social justice, and an innate sense of wanting to do something for others,” he added with more than a little pride.

ON 5 April 2022, Police issued a 31-year-old female driver with a Court Attendance Notice and Licence Suspension after she was detected for a speeding offence and engaged Police in a short pursuit on the Pacific Hwy, Valla.

The accused woman is to appear before Macksville Local Court on 28 April for the offences of: Police Pursuit, Learner unaccompanied, Exceed speed >45km/h, Learner not display ‘L’ plates.

On 3 April 2022 Police arrested a 49-year-old man at a Nambucca Heads address in relation to the alleged assault of a 33-year-old woman during a domestic violence incident.

The accused man was charged at Macksville Police Station and later released on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 21 April.

On 3 April Police arrested

a 26-year-old female driver in Ridge St, Nambucca Heads after she returned a positive Random Breath Test.

The accused woman underwent a breath analysis at Nambucca Heads Police Station and returned a MidRange PCA reading of 0.90.

The accused woman was issued with a licence suspension and a Court Attendance Notice to appear before Macksville Local Court on 21/4/22.

On 7 April Police charged a 66-year-old man at Macksville Police Station for breaching an AVO following a domestic violence incident that occurred on 6 April at a Nambucca Heads address.

The accused man was refused bail by Police to appear before Kempsey Local Court on 8 April Police are investigating a ‘fail to stop’ accident that occurred on 5 April at about

An eastbound vehicle on Partridge St, Macksville is alleged to have lost control, mounting the curb and colliding with a house causing a large hole in the brick wall of the premises.

The vehicle then collided with a water main causing damage before the vehicle fled the scene.

Nambucca Valley Council employees attended

to repair the burst water main.

On 4 April Police arrested a 56-year-old man at a Nambucca Heads address following the alleged assault of a 57-year-old woman during a domestic violence incident.

On 2 April at about 8:50pm emergency services were alerted to a two car collision at the intersection of the Pacific Hwy and Corkwood Rd roundabout adjacent to the Nambucca Heads Service Centre.

As a result of the collision both vehicles came to rest in the middle of the roundabout and both sustained extensive damage.

The male driver of the at fault vehicle was not injured and was issued with an infringement notice for not giving way to the other vehicle when entering the roundabout.

The passenger in the atfault vehicle and the female driver of the other vehicle were both conveyed by ambulance to Coffs Harbour Hospital with minor injuries.

AFL North Coast season to kick off with ANZAC Round

THE 2022 AFL North Coast season is set to kick off with a big ANZAC round on Saturday, 23 April.

One of the best local derbies in Coffs Harbour sport gets the season underway, with the Sawtell/ Toormina Saints playing host to the Coffs Harbour Breakers at Richardson Park, as the two best teams of last

season face off in the opening round.

The Northern Beaches Blues open their season by hosting the Grafton Tigers in Woolgoolga, while the Port Macquarie Magpies host the Lismore Swans.

AFL North Coast recently released its season fixtures for 2022, with the senior men's and women's competitions set to feature six teams in a fifteen-round

season.

Last season's senior men's teams the Nambucca Valley Lions and Casino Lions will now be part of a seven team reserves competition.

The AFL North Coast’s women's competition is set to feature six teams; the Coffs Harbour Breakers, Grafton Tigers, Lismore Swans, Northern Beaches Blues, Port Macquarie Magpies, and Sawtell/Toormina Saints.

The finals series gets underway in August with the grand finals scheduled for Saturday, 3 September.

The AFL North Coast’s junior season gets underway on Sunday, 1 May, and will feature five competitions; under 11s and 13s mixed, under 15s boys, and under 14s and 17s Youth Girls.

The Sir Doug Nicholls Round will be held on Saturday, 21 May. Community Football and Competition Manager Paul Taylor explained AFL North

The Bellingen Valley/ Dorrigo Magpies announced they will not be fielding any teams in this year’s Group 2 competition.

In a statement on its social media platform, the Magpies outlined a number of major factors for the decision, including the lack of depth for senior men, the flooding and inability to train or trial at their home ground, and the loss of a number of under 18s players from the Bellingen under 16s side

from last year.

The Magpies also stated they will be in recess for the 2022 season, and will use this recess to plan for their return in 2023.

The Magpies have won the second most premierships in Group 2 history with eleven.

Eight clubs are set to take part in the 2022 season, including the Coffs Harbour Comets, Grafton Ghosts, Macksville Sea Eagles, Nambucca Heads Roosters,

Orara Valley Axemen, Sawtell Panthers, South Grafton Rebels, and the Woolgoolga Seahorses.

All clubs are entering teams in the four competitions except the Axemen, who will not have an under 18s side.

This season sees the Orara Valley Axemen and Sawtell Panthers return after having last season off, while the Nambucca Roosters return for the first time since 2018.

Island Course has remained waterlogged and unsuitable for play – unfortunately, all competitions during the week had to be cancelled.

Our Staff are taking every opportunity to have the course ready for play as soon as the weather permits, and

we are confident that we will be able to hold this year’s 2002 Easter Bowl – an Open 36 Hole Medley Stableford event over Saturday and Sunday 16 and 17 April – visiting golfers are most welcome, please book through the Pro Shop.

My son has just started work and he is looking at cars to buy.

He has his heart set on a four-wheel drive tray back ute, but these cars are very expensive and he'll be paying it off for years.

I'm trying to show interest, but I know very little about cars and don't want him to buy something beyond his reach.

Landlady and lodger arrangement leads to claim on estate TINA owns her own home and lives alone.

She never married and has no children.

Tina decides to offer her spare room up for board and Peter soon moves into her house.

Peter receives a disability support pension and has not been employed for several years.

Ten years later, Tina passes away at the age of 65.

Tina leaves the whole of her estate to her brother and sister.

Peter challenges Tina’s will, seeking provision from her estate.

Peter claims that he was in a de facto relationship with Tina and that he is entitled to receive Tina’s home.

The Court hears evidence from ten witnesses, consisting of the parties’ friends and family.

One of the witnesses recalls a conversation with Tina where she stated that she had slept with Peter on only three occasions and that the experience was unsatisfactory.

The Court states that different types of living arrangements can create “borderline cases” which may include a relationship whereby the landlady permits the border to have sex with her every so often.

The Court is presented with Centrelink records, indicating that both Tina and Peter described their relationship status as “single”.

The Court ultimately finds that if a de facto relationship had existed, it was brief and ceased many years before Tina’s death.

However, the Court finds that Peter and Tina’s relationship could be characterised as “persons living in a close personal relationship”.

This classification does not require a “marriage-like” relationship, and only requires a relationship whereby one party provides the other with domestic support and personal care.

It is revealed that Peter owns multiple motor vehicles and has a substantial amount of money in the bank.

Nonetheless, given his poor health, he is able to demonstrate financial needs and is awarded the sum of $100,000, payable from the proceeds of the sale of Tina’s home.

Peter’s costs are also ordered to be paid from the estate.

JACK and Moira Welch are celebrating 70 years of marriage on Tuesday, 19 April 2020.

Jack and Moira are long term residents of the Nambucca Valley.

They moved to Yarranbella from Blacktown in 1969 and became dairy farmers.

After leaving the farm they retired to Macksville and now live in Nambucca Heads.

We need road and rail improvements, not missiles

DEAR News Of The Area,

EARLIER this year we heard that Australia is committed to developing a fleet of nuclear powered submarines at a cost of billions of dollars.

This week we hear that we are joining the USA in the development of long range missiles that can travel five times the speed of sound and can be fired from land, sea or air.

Federal Government funding in coming years is to be allocated to these projects.

Yet here in Australia we have no imminent threat from any other nation.

Only around twelve percent of the Federal Budget is devolved to the states and this needs to increase.

After the ravages of fires and floods there is an urgent need for spending on roads, rail, social housing and many other aspects of our

infrastructure.

Here in the Nambucca Valley we have rural roads that are often impassable and bridges that are in dire need of repair.

The situation is far worse up the coast in Lismore and many other flood affected areas.

We only need to take a look at the rail line between Sydney and Brisbane to see that we are miles behind other countries in terms of our infrastructure.

This needs to be a focus for any incoming government.

In short we need investment in community provision rather than massive expenditure on defence equipment which may never be required and only serves to appease the USA. Regards, Marlene GRIFFIN, Valla Beach.

EMERGENCY Services Volunteers constantly strive to support communities through work in evacuation and recovery centres as well as outreach to residents impacted in emergencies.

What a month March was!

Two intense weather systems moved across NSW, significantly impacting communities in the Northern Rivers, the Mid North Coast, Sydney Metro, Hunter and Central Coast regions.

The damage across the state is estimated by insurance companies to exceed $1 billion

dollars.

Six people have been confirmed dead.

More than 5,000 homes have been damaged, with more than half uninhabitable.

Over 8,000 people have come through the doors of evacuation centres, and been greeted

by Red Cross Volunteers. Significant and intense rainfall occurred in the Northern Rivers once again – with extensive flooding and evacuations in Lismore and so many other towns in the Northern Rivers.

Help travelled from near and far to assist flood affected communities, and Red Cross Emergency personnel from Nambucca Heads were present in Ballina for five days to support impacted residents together with other agencies – some 600 people were assisted.

Local flood events Flood warnings and evacuation orders were given to local communities and the Nambucca Team have supported three Evacuation Centres during the flood event at the end of March – at the Urunga CEX (71 residents/visitors assisted), Macksville Country Club and the Nambucca Heads RSL (50 residents/visitors assisted).

Our Emergency Services Team respond to flood events working cooperatively with other Community Partners: the Department of Communities and Justice (Housing), NSW Government who manage evacuation centres, NSW Health, Service Australia, the SES, the Salvation Army, Anglicare, Department of Primary Industries, Suncorp, Save the Children, The Army,

I'm not sure of your vintage, but when we were young and selecting a first car, we had very little to choose from.

Getting a loan wasn't an option, so often the first car was a hand-me-down or something with some pretty significant mechanical or body issues.

Today, it seems that many P-platers expect to be driving around in a sporty current model hatchback or a dual cab with towing capacity and I feel encouraging these visions of grandeur is not preparing them for some valuable life lessons.

It is amazing how much resilience you build when you start out in a car that has to have the bonnet lifted and the starter motor tapped to get it going.

Or purchasing a vehicle from a dodgy second-hand dealer intent on focusing on the low kilometres, while brushing past the fact the car was once submerged in a lake.

Never is there a better time to test your courage under pressure than going down a hill only to realise the brakes have failed.

Boiled brakes are a life-long lesson.

Windows that don't wind down (remember non-automatic windows?), an interior roof lining that has to be held up with thumb tacks, an annoying leak meaning everyone in the back seat has to hold their legs up in the air.

These are the experiences that will make (and sometimes break) a person.

What right do we have to prevent the personal and emotional growth that goes with them by offering our kids an interest free loan?

A good dose of reality is a healthy thing.

Hang back and let him learn from his mistakes and his overinflated car ownership dreams, as painful as that may be.

ANOTHER week has passed, and bowls competition was on and off at the Nambucca Heads Bowling Club, thanks to more wet weather.

On Tuesday, the women played the Final of the Consistency Singles, with Manor Smith defeating Kim Porter 150 -100 in glorious sunshine.

Some of us Googled or asked Siri to find out what that big orange ball was in the sky and were told it's called the sun. On Wednesday, the club's selected triples competition was washed out with more rain.

Women's Social Bowls looked to be going the same way as Wednesday but turned out fine and a great day was had by all.

As always new members are most welcome.

Friday had 60 bowlers play in an enjoyable afternoon on the greens.

Saturday morning dawned and Club Bowl's Organiser Mick ‘Noah’ Boyle let out a huge sigh of relief as the weatherman was wrong.
