By Mick BIRTLES WITH the much anticipated re-opening of the Bowraville Theatre just around the corner, the Bowraville Arts Council decided that the ‘Grand Old Dame’ needed a bit of a clean up.

On Saturday 5 March a large team of willing volunteers descended on the Theatre with mops, buckets, pressure hoses, an assortment of tools and loads of elbow grease to get her ready for opening night.

The Bowraville Theatre will awake from its pandemic induced slumber with a bang and some big laughs on 18 March 2022, when the ‘Laugh it Off’ comedy fundraiser being produced by the talented people of Human Rabbit Entertainment hits the stage.

The aim of the program is to encourage girls and women to consider a career in a trade, and to get local employers thinking about taking on more women as apprentices in industries that are traditionally male dominated.

range of possible career pathways, which they may not have normally considered,” said Megan Cochrane, Community Liaison Officer, Bowraville Central School.

Secondary girls from the school had the opportunity to gain handson experience with tools used in most trades, gaining skills to help them in the future.

The Bowraville Central Central girls were full of praise for the workshop saying they “thoroughly enjoyed the day”, “it was great to learn new skills”, and “the teacher was so nice and helpful”.

An advantage of the day, and of attending a central school, means that younger students also got to see what happens in high school.

Dignity Initiative At Public Schools WOMEN and girls everywhere know how important access to menstrual products is.

Yet for some the cost is high and access is not as simple as it should be.

Female students at public schools across the state will soon have free access to menstrual hygiene products, following a successful trial in 31 schools.

The $30 million program will make sure female students can participate in all aspects of school life.

Minister for Education

Sarah Mitchell said this is an important milestone for female students.

“Getting your period should not be a barrier to education,” Ms Mitchell said.

This program is providing schools with dispensers, tampons and pads for free and is supporting young women’s health, engagement and attendance at school.

“I want our young women to feel comfortable in knowing they have access to free sanitary products when they need.”

The program builds on a pilot at schools in South

Western Sydney and the Dubbo region.

“We have seen through the pilot program that providing sanitary items has a positive impact on educational engagement and attainment, ” Ms Mitchell said.

Minister for Women Bronnie Taylor said the statewide rollout is what many young women have been calling for.

“This great initiative is about ensuring our young women have the support they need, with dignity and without barriers, as they continue their education

The NSW Government’s Flood Management Program will provide funding at a ratio of up to 2:1 for projects with a value of up to $80,000 meaning a maximum grant of $53,333 ex GST. Nambucca Valley Council will support projects by donating all local (not State) development application and construction certificate fees.

Voluntary house raising is an effective flood mitigation strategy for existing houses in low flood hazard areas where other structural mitigation works to reduce flood risk are impractical or uneconomic.

Expressions of interest will be assessed in accordance with the NSW Government’s Guidelines for Voluntary House Raising Schemes and Council’s Voluntary House Raising Policy. Eligible buildings have to be used for residential purposes (not commercial or industrial) and have been constructed prior to 1986. Weatherboard clad dwellings sitting on a bearers and joists (timber) floors are ideal candidates for the program.

The Blokes Brekky - doing wonders for the wellbeing of men in the community

HAVING its genesis in Nambucca Heads but now a monthly staple in Bowraville, a gathering known as the Blokes Brekky is doing wonders for the wellbeing of men in the community.

At 7:00 am on the first Saturday of each month men show up at the Anglican Hall in Young Street, Bowraville and for $5 enjoy a large cooked breakfast with tea and coffee while catching up with old friends and making new ones.

News Of The Area spoke to one of the driving forces behind the initiative, cocoordinator Jeff Mott.

Citing the tough times the town had been through with drought, bushfires, COVID, floods and the difficulty many men had in expressing their

feelings, Jeff said, “This is a good chance for blokes to get together who may work long hours, maybe have lost their partner, be in hardship or incapacity to enjoy the interactivity they would not get anywhere else.”

Jeff added, “Fellow coordinator Tony Fuller and I are so pleased that everyone who comes along gets something out of Blokes Brekky and they go away with a smile on their dial.”

Each month the Blokes Brekky also features a ten minute talk from a guest speaker.

Tony Fuller said, “We have had some interesting guest speakers, such as the Mayor, local Fire Brigade first responders, a lady doctor, a real estate agent, a tractor accident victim, a Blaze Aid coordinator and many more.”

The guest speaker for March was renowned musician Graham Howle, a Bowraville local who enthralled the gathering with his reflections on leaving Bowraville as a young man to see the world and his eventual return to his hometown.

Although the Blokes Brekky is greatly supported by the Anglican Parish Nambucca Valley, they are not religious events but rather focus on fellowship and general wellbeing.

A much anticipated aspect of the Blokes Brekky are some well researched and delivered jokes.

Tony Fuller laments, “Unfortunately the Anglican Hall at Bowraville can only sit 30 for breakfast and we have a bit of a waiting list.”

Through the generosity of the Anglican Parish Nambucca Valley, St James Anglican Church Bowraville, the efforts of Tony Fuller, Jeff Mott and an amazing team of volunteers in the kitchen, the health and wellbeing of men in the Bowraville community is in a better state.

Disaster assistance available for flood affected individuals INDIVIDUALS impacted by the flood events unfolding in NSW can now access the first tranche of NSW Government support through Service NSW. Since February 22, seventeen Local Government Areas have been declared as disaster areas.

The first round of immediate support is now

available to assist as some areas start their recovery.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said Service NSW was ready to support anyone needing flood assistance.

“The scale of these floods is unprecedented and right now, we are still in emergency and response mode.

“This is the immediate

assistance available that has been unlocked by the NSW Government as part of the disaster declarations,” Mr Perrottet said.

“This is the start of our support measures and there will be more announced in the coming days.”

Seventeen local government areas (LGAs) have

been declared as disaster areas and are eligible for support through Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

These areas are: Armidale, Ballina, Bellingen, Byron, Clarence Valley, Coffs Harbour, Glen Innes Severn, Hornsby, Kempsey, Kyogle, Lismore, Nambucca, Port Macquarie/ Hastings, Richmond, Tenterfield, The Hills and Tweed.

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello encouraged people in need of help to contact Service NSW straight away.

Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience Steph Cooke said the danger is far from over for many communities across NSW. “While we are still in the emergency phase, recovery is a process that must start as soon as it possibly can,” Ms Cooke said.

“The provision of this assistance will ensure we can get people and communities back on their feet as quickly as possible.”

Through www.service.nsw.gov.au/floods/ financial-assistance the following assistance is now available for those impacted by the floods: Individuals • A Disaster Relief Grant – to assist low income earners faced with disaster hardship who have suffered damage to the structure or contents of their home.

• Personal and financial counselling.

• Assistance finding temporary housing for those who have been forced from their homes.

Small business, primary production and not-for profit organisation support • Small business and primary producers concessional loans of up to $130,000 • Concessional interest rate loans for not-for-profits • Freight subsidies of up to 50 per cent for primary producers Additionally, residents may be eligible for the Commonwealth Government’s Disaster Recovery Payment, a one-off, non-means tests payment of $1,000 for adults and $400 for children who have been seriously injured, lost their homes or whose homes have been directly damaged, or the immediate family members of a person who has lost their life, as a direct result of the storms and floods.

Disaster Recovery Allowances are also available through the Federal Government via Services Australia at servicesaustralia.gov.au Service NSW customer care specialists are also able to connect flood-affected customers with services and support information, including: • Access to emergency accommodation; • Relevant charitable services; • Mental health and wellbeing services; • Financial assistance; • Insurance and legal advice; and • Replacing lost ID.

Labor Announces Cowper Candidate “I have heard the deep concerns by many people from Coffs Harbour to Port Macquarie about the many issues that impact directly on them that the Liberal/ National government has just ignored, or acted against our interest, over the past number of years,” Mr McMullen said.

“I am proud and honoured to be chosen by the Labor Party to contest the local seat of Cowper as part of Anthony Albanese’s team for the 2022 election,” he said.

Mr McMullen said voters were looking for action “on the issues that affect them (including) health, aged care, job security, low wages, housing, education, lack of support for small business (and) lack of meaningful action on climate change and women’s safety”.

“People want a National Integrity Commission,” Mr McMullen said.

NAMBUCCA Valley Council is seeking expressions of interest from property owners in flood liable areas who wish to receive funding assistance to lift the residential floors of their houses to the estimated one in 100 year flood frequency level, plus a 500mm freeboard.

The NSW Government’s Flood Management Program will provide funding at a ratio of up to 2:1 for projects with a value of up to $80,000 meaning a maximum grant of $53,333 ex GST. Nambucca Valley Council will support projects by donating all local (not State) development application and construction certificate fees.

“Whilst the lodgement of an expression of interest is no guarantee that funding will be made available it will allow the Council to put forward eligible projects for funding approval and compete for an allocation of funds from the NSW Government’s Floodplain Management Program,” said Cr Hoban.

“I would urge all the owners of housing on our floodplain with habitable floors below the Council’s floor height planning standard of the estimated one in 100 year flood frequency level plus 500mm freeboard to consider the opportunity of lifting their floor with this funding assistance,” said Cr Hoban.

Expressions of Interest for Funding Assistance for House Raising house raising is an effective flood mitigation strategy for existing houses in low flood hazard areas where other structural mitigation works to reduce flood risk are impractical or uneconomic.

Mayor Rhonda Hoban OAM welcomed the initiative as an important component of Council’s work to make the Nambucca Valley community more resilient to natural disasters and the adverse impacts of climate change.

“The Council needs to support its community in taking practical action to reduce the impacts of natural disasters in all their forms.

“The financial costs of natural disasters to the community and government, not to mention the tragic loss

of life and social trauma, have again been brought home by the recent flood disasters in South East Queensland and the Northern Rivers region of NSW,” said Cr Hoban.

Expressions of interest will be assessed in accordance with the NSW Government’s Guidelines for Voluntary House Raising Schemes and Council’s Voluntary House Raising Policy.

Eligible buildings have to be used for residential purposes (not commercial or industrial) and have been constructed prior to 1986.

Job Protection for Flood Emergency Volunteers PREMIER Dominic Perrottet has activated employment protections for volunteers to ensure they cannot be unjustly fired from their jobs while volunteering in the flood emergency.

The Premier said the provisions mean an emergency volunteer cannot be fired or have their position changed for a work absence that is related to their volunteer work.

“The volunteer response in this flood emergency has been nothing short of amazing – everyone who has put their own lives on hold to help others during these floods has been a true hero,” Mr Perrottet said.

“I think the heartfelt thanks and gratitude around the state for these volunteers would suggest that very few employers would take any negative action against their employees who are volunteering.

“I hope this employment provision can give some comfort and security to volunteers who now know that their regular jobs are safe.”

The employment protection order was made by the Premier under the State Emergency and Rescue Management Act 1989 and will remain in force until March 21.

The order means that employers found to have taken negative action against a volunteer can be fined and the court can direct employers to reinstate workers who have been dismissed.

Deputy Premier, Minister for Regional NSW and Minister for Police Paul Toole said volunteers were the backbone of regional communities, and this support was crucial to allow them to continue making a big difference on the ground at a time it’s needed most.

“Many of the volunteers across the North Coast have been directly hit by the floods themselves - with some even losing their own homes - but they continue to work around the clock to help communities get back on their feet,” Mr Toole said.

“This will safeguard their jobs and provide certainty that putting up their hands to help others now won’t impact their employment down the track.

“This is about helping them to help others.”

Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience Steph Cooke said volunteers from a number of different emergency services agencies are continuing to support our community, and it is important we continue to support them.

“Please know we have your back.

“You have all done an incredible job, working long days to help our State through this crisis.”

The order covers volunteer emergency workers from agencies such as the NSW State Emergency Service, NSW Rural Fire Service, Surf Life Saving NSW, NSW Volunteer Rescue Association Inc and Marine Rescue NSW.

Documentary tells inspiring local stories

By Andrea FERRARI INSPIRING stories of locals growing up in the Nambucca Valley are the subject of a new documentary created by the Becoming U Youth Empowerment Project from Uniting NSW ACT. The project is a successful applicant in Nambucca Valley

Council’s Moving Forward Community Grants Program, funded by the Bushfire Community Recovery and Resilience Fund (BCRRF).

For the past three years Cass Wilson, Community Impact Coordinator – Youth, for Uniting’s Becoming U project, and the rest of the team have been working in the Nambucca community.

“For the first eighteen months it was all about listening, taking the time to

build trusted relationships and working out that the young people of the valley, aged eight to eighteen, have the biggest room to grow when trying to meet and then unleash their full potential,” Cass told News Of The Area.

“Becoming U then came to life as a larger co-designed project with the help of young people and those important to them.

“One of these projects that sits under Becoming U

is called the Inspire U Digital Stories Project, which has been proudly supported by a Moving Forward Grant, funded jointly through the Australian and State Government Bushfire Community Resilience and Recovery Fund.

“The Inspire U Digital Stories comes together as a short documentary film showcasing ten stories of local people who grew up in the Valley and are achieving inspiring things.

“Some have overcome hardships, disabilities, natural disasters and grief to get where they are today.

“The aim of this project is to respond to the common theme young people repeatedly told us that they want to see local stories of relatable people who have overcome similar barriers but have got through and created something special,” she said.

The Inspire U Film will premiere at Nambucca High

School on Friday 18 March at 5:30pm.

“We would love our whole community across the valley to come together to watch these stories.

“There will be a free bus available from Bowraville, Nambucca, Macksville and Valla, a free dinner from our local food trucks and a fun photobooth and band.”

“For some communities, the local petrol station is also the corner shop, so it is critical we support our businesses to get back on their feet as soon as possible.

“Payments of up to $50,000 can go towards the cost of safety inspections, building repairs, cleaning equipment, materials needed to resume trade, disposing of debris and spoiled stock, or leasing temporary space.”

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said businesses could apply via the Service NSW website or by calling a Service NSW Business Concierge on 13 77 88.

“The grants are being delivered by Service NSW in

partnership with Resilience NSW and the Commonwealth Government under a 50:50 cost-sharing arrangement,” Mr Dominello said.

“Please talk to a Service NSW Business Concierge who can talk you through the process.”

Connect to Wellbeing for mental health support after floods

AS communities continue to deal with the immediate issues of the current flood emergency, Healthy North Coast is reminding people to also support their mental health and wellbeing.

Chief Executive Julie Sturgess said while the North Coast community is incredibly resilient, the recent events will be taking a toll on people’s heads and hearts.

“Besides the stress of living through a flood event,

we know that many residents will now be feeling devastated because they have lost their homes and possessions.

“Residents who have been displaced, cut off or are without power, will also be feeling isolated and stressed.

“My heart goes out to them, but I want people to know they are not alone.

“Looking after your mental health is critical to coping with disaster.

“Whether you need mental

health support for yourself, a family member or friend, it’s just a phone call or a click away,” she said.

Healthy North Coast’s Connect to Wellbeing service is free and offers a single point of contact to connect people with the right mental health information or service that best suits their needs.

“Connect to Wellbeing can provide you with information or referral to the service that’s most appropriate for

you, including telehealth services offering up to 10 free telepsychology sessions,” Ms Sturgess said.

“Right now, we have extended Connect to Wellbeing service hours to better support people during this flood situation.”

Ms Sturgess also reminded residents that if they can’t access their regular GP, Healthy North Coast is offering a 24-hour free GP telehealth service.

“Through a phone or video consult, you can access health advice, diagnosis and treatment, as well as electronic prescriptions, medical certificates and specialist referrals,” she said.

“I’m also very mindful that residents in flood-affected areas may have limited access to phone and internet services. We understand telecommunications providers are working on these issues as a matter of urgency.

“When connectivity is restored, we urge people to access Connect to Wellbeing or GP telehealth.

“We know that right now and in the coming weeks and months, mental health support will be critical to getting the North Coast community back on its feet again.”

Mosaic master presents in Coffs

COASTAL Claymakers are keeping alive the 20-year legacy of inspiring local mosaic artists of the Coffs Coast and the Nambucca Valley with a mosaic presentation and workshop at the end of March.

“Guy Crosley’s public mosaic art in Scotts Head and Nambucca Heads dating back to 2001 have inspired us to learn more about mosaic making,” Michaela Kloeckner, President of the Coastal Claymakers told News Of The Area.

“Coastal Claymakers is very excited and privileged to have secured renowned artist Pamela Irving from Melbourne to come to Coffs to share her inspirations.”

On Friday 25 March at

6pm there will be a free presentation by Pamela to the public held at Coffs Harbour Scout Hall, Harbour Drive (near Coles).

Pamela Irving has worked as a full-time artist for over 30 years.

Her sense of humour, love of irony and respect for storytelling are apparent in her varied body of work – from drawings and paintings to intimate sculptures and large-scale mosaic installations.

For the last few years Pamela has taught at the prestigious Chicago Mosaic School and has also held several exhibitions at the Gallery of Contemporary Mosaics in Chicago, GOCM. Irving has presented

Boosting Regional Housing Supply SHARING the planning load and helping regional councils speed up the delivery of new housing are at the heart of a new program unveiled last week.

Minister for Planning and Minister for Homes Anthony Roberts announced $1 million for the establishment of a program of targeted assistance to

regional councils, at the Local Government NSW Conference.

“We know regional NSW needs more homes, that’s why I’m announcing a Regional Housing Flying Squad to help regional councils clear development applications faster,” Mr Roberts said.

“A panel of planning

consultants, funded by the NSW Government and helped by the Department of Planning and Environment (DPE), will be available to help manage development applications for new homes.”

Mr Roberts said the targeted assistance responded to recommendations made by the Regional Housing

Taskforce.

“We know attracting qualified planners can be a problem, particularly for smaller regional councils,” he said.

“That’s why, in addition to the flying squad, the Department will open up space in its offices for councils to use as remote workplaces for their

planners.

“Covid has proven the importance of flexibility in the workplace.

The CoPlan Spaces initiative builds on that, giving people access to convenient office space along with opportunities to learn and network with other council and DPE planners.”

Collectively, there are

more than 16,000 active DAs in regional NSW, worth more than $14 billion to the economy. Regional councils will be able to nominate DAs that deliver regional housing, through a formal Expression of Interest process, which will be assessed by an evaluation panel for the flying squads to action.

URUNGA Lions hosted the truck drivers of a Need For Feed convoy en route from Victoria to the flooddevastated Northern Rivers last Saturday, 5 March.

Emily Struik from Urunga Lions Club was contacted the previous week by Darren from the Lions Club of Victoria’s Need for Feed charity to ask if it would be possible to organise a night-time stopover for members of the club who were responding to an urgent request for assistance to provide fodder for farmers who have been devastated by the flooding in Lismore and the surrounding areas.

Initially it was thought there would be about seven vehicles but by the time the convoy left Victoria there were thirteen vehicles.

“The drivers are all volunteers and the use of the vehicles, and the fodder are donated to the Need for Feed organisation,” Lion Emily Struik told News Of The Area.

“Fuel for the vehicles is purchased from monies donated so that this great service can continue wherever

Looking for somewhere to put up the convoy drivers overnight, Urunga Lion Jo Brotherton contacted Ben Flynn from BP North Urunga who agreed to help the club with space to park the vehicles and to organise facilities for the drivers to shower and freshen up.

The convoy arrived in Urunga at about 6:30pm to a very warm welcome from members of the local Lions Club who had prepared a hearty meal for them.

During the evening Urunga Lions President Peter Brotherton presented Graham Cockerel, President of the Lions Club of Berwick, with a

Graham thanked the club for the cheque and for the great meal that they had provided.

He also thanked Ben Flynn for his hospitality and generosity in agreeing to provide breakfast and coffee for the drivers before they were to head off on the final leg of their journey.

Lions Awareness Day a success for Nambucca Lions

SATURDAY 5 March 2022 was Lions Awareness Day and the Nambucca Lions held an Information Stall at the Nambucca Plaza where they displayed the projects and foundations they support in a hope to increase membership.

Those who came to

the Nambucca Plaza were also treated to a free sausage sizzle from the Lions Food Van and had the opportunity to chat with the Lions about the work they do for the community.

News Of The Area spoke to the Secretary of the Nambucca Heads Lions Club, Mr Bill Shepherd, who said, “The Lions Awareness Day went extremely well with lots of interest, many appreciative locals donating to the Lions, with at least eight people who are likely to join Lions so we can continue the range of projects and community work we conduct.”

NEW South Wales Health is alerting the community to protect themselves against mosquito bites.

Japanese Encephalitis (JE) virus has been detected in samples from commercial pig farms at five locations in both southern and western NSW indicating the virus is likely circulating in the mosquito population.

Japanese Encephalitis is a mosquito-borne disease that may affect animals, including pigs, and humans.

The virus is spread by

mosquito bites.

“It is really important to protect yourself from mosquito bites as mosquitoes can spread viruses including Japanese encephalitis,” said Dr Kerry Chant, Chief Health Officer.

Less than one percent of people infected with the disease experience symptoms, which typically include fever, joint pain, and rash.

Occasionally, it can cause severe neurological illness with headache, convulsions and reduced consciousness.

“There is no specific treatment for JE or other mosquito-borne viruses.

“The best way to avoid infection is to avoid being

bitten by mosquitoes”, Dr Chant said.

New South Wales Health issues the following advice for protection against Japanese Encephalitis.

Cover up as much as possible with light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and covered footwear when outside.

Use an effective insect repellent on exposed skin and reapply within a few hours.

It is the NSW Health advice that the best mosquito repellents contain Diethyl Toluamide (DEET), Picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

Insecticide sprays, vapour dispensing units (indoors) and mosquito coils (outdoors)

New Council GM Appointed MR Chris Thompson has been named as the new General Manager of Nambucca Valley Council after an extensive recruitment process.

Making the announcement on Wednesday, Mayor Rhonda Hoban OAM said, “I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Thompson as the General Manager of Nambucca Valley Council.”

Prior to taking the Council GM role, Mr Thompson, of Mooloolaba, Queensland, was the Managing Director of Rethink Business and Commerce, who offer advice on financial strategy, policy and governance, before taking the Council role.

His five-year

performance-based contract with Council will commence in the first week of April 2022.

“Chris performed very well at two interviews, first with the Interview Panel and then at a meeting of the whole Council when he proved to be an outstanding choice,” Mayor Hoban said.

“With his senior executive leadership background in local government and the private sector, Chris will bring fresh ideas and great energy to the Council.

“He has a very impressive background as Deputy Mayor and Chair of Finance, Corporate Services and Business Units at the Sunshine Coast

Council in Queensland.

“Local government in Queensland is a bit different to here.

“Councillors are full time and paid accordingly in Queensland.

“Chris recognises he has some catching up to do but he brings a wealth of vexperience in how business is conducted in a very progressive Queensland Council.”

Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club

WITH over 440mm of rain on the golf course over the week, and the daily flooding of the Causeway, the course was closed during the week.

Very fortunately, there has been minimal flood damage to the course this time, and we hope to resume normal play when the weather lets up.

The usual Monthly Medal scheduled for Saturday 5 March was changed to a Medley Stableford to allow walkers only the opportunity

to get out for a soggy game of golf.

The conditions seemed to suit Brock Wilson (5) who scored 40 points to win the day from David Rosser (16) with 39 points on a close countback from William Mann.

Good rounds from Nathan Ison and Norman Ross from Yarrawonga with 38 points, and the ball rundown went to 32 points on countback.

NTP’s went to Stuart Johnston for the ‘Ecomist’ long putt on 2, Philip Mander on 5, David McBarron

Our long awaited middle green has finally been finished with winners reckoning it's great and some of the losers, well we know what they say don't we.

There are some exciting events coming up.

The first being the Marquis Macadamia Pairs on the last Monday of the month.

A big thank you to Bruce Mason for all his work getting this up and running.

Following that on 3 April is the grand opening of our new greens.

New AFL North Coast Youth Girls competition to kick off in 2022

FEMALE footy in the region has gone from strength to strength in recent years.

Now the AFL North Coast is preparing to add another junior girl’s competition, with the Youth Girls under 14s set to launch in 2022.

The new competition will be in addition to the existing Youth Girls and women’s competitions.

All eight clubs between Grafton and Port Macquarie have committed to fielding a Youth Girls under 14 team in the 2022 season.

The AFL North Coast’s women’s competition now has six teams after making its debut with three in 2019, while the Youth Girls competition now has five

Mick Boyle, our beloved Bowls Organiser, is having nightmares with the rain forcing the cancellation of the first round of the Minor Pairs on 26 and 27 February.

Luckily the sun came out last Saturday and with half decent weather the first round was able to be played.

Neil Duffus and Bruce Mason defeated Aaron Cedelland and Bill Blair.

Dallas Nancarrow and Jo Frank defeated Perry McNally and Mick Boyle.

D Curran and Tony Stokes defeated Rowdy Reynolds and Drum Poletti.

Social Bowls were played last week with all games completed.

NSW State Open Swimming Championships

NSW State Open Swimming Championships were held at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, Homebush from 4-6 March.

Swimmers were entered from five states of Australia, mainly from Queensland.

There was also a competitor from New

Macksville Country Club Bowls Nambucca Valley

THERE has not been a lot of bowls played in the first two months of new year due to the wet conditions that has caused major flooding all along the east coast and our thoughts go out to those that have been affected.

On the greens we have been able to get the Fours Championship to the Final which was played last Sunday in between showers.

The two teams contesting the final were Max Ward, Ken Ainsworth, Cliff Yager and Skip, Michael McMahon against Kevin Garner, Col Crawford, Phil Brennan and

Skip, Dale (Ida) Down.

Both teams handled the slow conditions extremely well with some great draw bowling and both skips playing some great conversions.

The lead swapped between both teams in a very tight game and at 15 - 16 in favour of Ida’s team going into the 20th end where Micheals team picked up a 5 which was enough for them to win the game 20 - 17.

Congratulations to the winners and of course commiserations to the runners up.

New men’s coach Ricky Welsh saw the potential of the team and is excited for the season ahead.

“The game took off to a flying start, fast paced and evenly matched.

“It was played in a great spirit and we showed glimpses of what we can achieve this season, just couldn't persist for the full 90 minutes.

“Unfortunately we weren't able to capitalise on a few chances throughout the game, I am excited to see this team grow throughout this season, a season full of potential,” said Ricky.

The Nambucca Strikers now look forward to hosting

the Nambucca Cup. “We have our annual challenge cup this month on 18,19 and 20 March.

“The executive committee met last week and decided that unless there is a major flood warning we are going ahead with teams coming from as far north as Byron Bay and as far south as Sydney to compete in 35s,

open men and open women.

“Two years in a row we have been unable to hold the tournament because of Covid and flooding so we are jumping at the bit to have it this year and the players are so keen to play,” said Keily.

Despite the wet weather there has been a lot of action behind the scenes at the Nambucca Strikers and

playing numbers are on the rise.

“New coaching coordinator Rhys Jones has just completed his C class licence so he will be able to use that knowledge and experience to help our coaches this year and is working hard to get coaching courses run at our club before the season

commences.

“For the first time in the Strikers’ history we will have 10s,12s,14s and possibly 16s (depending on numbers) girls teams, which is such an achievement for our club, this has come after lots of hard work building girls/womens football at our club,” said Keily.

Estranged child makes claim

MARY makes a will leaving the whole of her estate to her son David.

She makes no provision for her son Peter and her will includes a notation stating that “Peter has chosen not to communicate with me for many years”.

When Mary passes-away at the age of 80, she leaves an estate valued at $2 million.

Peter makes a claim against Mary’s estate.

At trial, the Court hears that Mary was left out of her parents’ wills and made a successful claim, so she was aware of what was involved in challenging a will.

Evidence regarding Mary’s intentions, in the form of lengthy handwritten statements by her, are put before the Court.

These statements demonstrate an estrangement between Mary and Peter of around 30 years. The statements refer to feelings of abandonment and hurt.

Mary describes feeling heartbroken and of an unfulfilled desire to have a relationship with her grandchildren.

She expresses disappointment due to the lack of support she received during her husband’s illness and ultimately his passing.

Peter’s affidavit details a relationship with his mother in which he says she was hostile and erratic and details a critical incident whereby he said Mary was unreasonably enraged with him for leaving the matrimonial home as a young adult.

Peter however concedes that he made limited attempts to reconcile.

The Court hears evidence that David had a close and devoted relationship with his mother.

Peter also claims that he is entitled to provision from Mary’s estate because he is approaching retirement and still resides in rental accommodation.

He also says that his wife has serious health problems which will need to be addressed in the future.

Peter does however hold a substantial superannuation fund.

David on the other hand, is also able to demonstrate substantial needs.

Ultimately, despite an estrangement of around 30 years, the court accepts that much of the blame was attributed to Mary, and awards Peter a lump sum of $400,000 plus payment of his legal costs.

I've met a wonderful lady, but I seem to have an allergy to something in her home.

Each time I go there I develop red eyes, wheezing and sneezing.

I now have to take an antihistamine before I visit, which is not a long-term solution.

There are so many options of what it could be - plants, her beloved dog, her casual approach to cleaning and the candles and incense she burns.

How do I delicately approach this, and perhaps start to remove some of these items one by one to work out the issue via a process of elimination?

The destructiveness of war DEAR News Of The Area,

NIGHT after night, we watch the unfolding horror of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on our screens.

The sight of innocent civilians, mostly women and children, fleeing towards the Polish border, whilst their towns are bombarded and laid waste by the Russians is truly heartbreaking, and the international community must come together urgently to bring this nightmare to an end.

The condemnation of the Russian invasion has rightly been almost universal, and nations have moved swiftly to impose sanctions on the Putin regime.

Let us all hope earnestly that the sanctions will work.

But what of the other wars of aggression that have taken place in recent decades, some of which continue to this day?

There were no calls for sanctions against the US and its Coalition of the Willing when it invaded Iraq in search of non-existent weapons of mass destruction.

And what of NATO’s bombardment of Libya to oust the dictator Gaddafi, leaving the

country in turmoil to this day?

And then we have the destruction of the impoverished state of Yemen at the hands of Saudi Arabia, armed by Western governments and resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of mostly innocent lives, leaving the country almost completely destroyed and its inhabitants in abject poverty?

And why is it OK for Israel to regularly pulverize the Gaza strip, killing thousands of Palestinians and creating mass poverty amongst the two million people living there?

And it’s worth asking this question: why are Ukrainians who throw Molotov cocktails at their invaders hailed as heroes, whereas teenage boys who throw stones at their military oppressors in the West Bank are labelled as terrorists, to be shot dead with impunity by the occupying army?

We should condemn all these wars of aggression, which cause so much suffering, bloodshed and destruction, and which have displaced tens of millions of people in the past two decades. These wars serve only the interests of the all-powerful armaments industry and the politicians who do their bidding.

Equality in low-cost housing allocations said the State and Federal governments would jointly fund the $10 million project to deliver “much-needed low-cost housing” for lowincome women over the age of 55, on land owned by the RFBI in Bellingen.

This appears to be a wonderful project and certainly will be beneficial to all concerned and assist some vulnerable members of the older community.

There is however a disturbing aspect to the project, namely that all accommodation is being allocated to women.

Considering that some older men do become disadvantaged/low income too, would

it not have been possible to allocate some of the 40 residences to men?

Even a token half dozen would be better than none!

For those people who think men should miss out, what if it was your male relative or friend who is being overlooked simply because they are male?

It also defies comprehension that both State and Federal Governments are willing to financially back this anti-equality project model with an election coming soon.

Hopefully, whoever decided to only house women realise they are ignoring today’s

Dear Geoff, Well, this is a bit of a disaster.

You've finally met someone you really like, but there seems to be a few more incompatibilities that we should address.

This woman sounds to me as though she has a rather easy-going approach to life, and your process of elimination comment is a bit troubling.

If you were simply eliminating a grevillea, or perhaps avoiding her home during the height of springtime pollen production, that would be understandable.

But when you start mentioning her beloved dog in the same sentence as having a dig at her housekeeping skills, I fear that once the giddy joy of those early romantic days subsides, your world will start to crumble.

All you will be left with is a woman wearing yoga pants, chanting affirmations through clouds of sandalwood smoke, while her Burmese Mountain Dog, Clarise, licks the breadcrumbs from her plate, while you, Geoff, are in the corner in a Hazmat suit, surrounded by HEPA filters, rolling a lint brush down your pinstripe suit to remove dust mites and dog hairs.

Geoff, if my intuition doesn't fail me - and it rarely does - I feel that the only process of elimination that will be taking place in the very near future is the elimination of you.

Chin up, though.

There are plenty of clean freaks in this world.

Maybe you just need to throw a few more keywords into your dating profile your love of gleaming benchtops, hospital corners and cleaning between tiles with a toothbrush should filter out some of the less suitable candidates.

Carpe diem, Jasminda. equality standards and that men should be included in the low-income housing project as well.
