ON Monday 14 February 2022 many Australians will reflect on the service to the nation of a group of men known affectionately as ‘The Nashos’.

The day is officially known as National Servicemen’s Day and the Nambucca Valley will mark the day with a service of commemoration at the Nambucca Heads Cenotaph, assembling at 10:45 am for an 11:00 am start.

This iteration of National Service saw the requirement for all 20-year-old males to register with the Department of Labour and National Service.

The Macksville Show is Back!

AFTER an absence of two long years a centre piece of Nambucca Valley life, the iconic Macksville Show, is back.

On 29 and 30 April 2022 the Valley will come alive with the type of show we have come to know and love in Showgrounds that have had an upgrade since the last Macksville Show.

News Of The Area spoke with the President of the Macksville Show Society, Michael Ettelson, who said, “Visitors at this year’s Macksville Show will benefit from improvements to the Showgrounds such as improved ring drainage, dining room and kitchen upgrades, new underground electricity and computerised systems creating a range of efficiencies.”

Michael added, “The Showgrounds are now owned by the Nambucca River District

Agricultural Association Limited with some new young directors who are looking at the show with renewed enthusiasm.”

Those returning to the Macksville Showgrounds will notice expanded sale yards that, combined with success in bidding for State Government grants, are funding continued improvements to facilities at the site.

The 2022 Macksville Show will feature favourites like sideshow alley rides and stalls, a trade area and those much loved traditional pavilion displays.

Visitors will also enjoy entertainment that includes the Aussie FMX Stunt Motorbikes, fireworks, a demolition derby, dog jumping, lawnmower races, a new program from the Australian Stock Horse Association and much more.

“We are very excited to be presenting a great Macksville Show after a two year hiatus and

A winner in running, cricket and football, he was a true all-rounder who obviously took pride in his accomplishments and those gold medallions he secured to a rose-gold chain.

The medallions and later awards and tokens tell the story of a man who cared for others and a life well lived – but who was A D McLeod and how did his precious keepsakes find their way to the tip at Stuarts Point?

As the man who found the medals, this is the mystery that Carey Grace from Grassy Head is hoping readers will help him solve.

“About two weeks before Christmas I took some garden waste to the tip and parked near a middle-aged couple who’d thrown out boxes of stuff,” Carey explains.

“After I’d finished, I wandered over to see what they’d left – as you do when odd bits and pieces come in handy for

Carey took home a box with nuts and bolts and bits of wire, stowed it on a shelf in his garage and forgot about

it until he needed to replace a bolt on his secateurs.

“I was looking for the right size bolt when I picked up a small box

stamped with the words ‘Europa Travel Clock’ and was amazed to find it contained an assortment of medals, awards and things,” Carey said.

Certain the box was thrown out mistakenly, Carey contacted all the McLeods he could find without success.

By Andrea FERRARI PARENTS and carers of teenagers are being invited to join a free webinar series run by headspace that gives support strategies to help them navigate the ups and downs of teenage mental health.

As the National Youth Mental Health Foundation, headspace is working hard to provide support to families and friends of young people living with mental ill-health.

“Currently rolling out across NSW, the series of free mental health education webinars are open to those who want to learn more about how to support young people aged 12 to 25 in difficult times,” Phillip Stone, Team Lead NSW, headspace Schools told News Of The Area.

In Term 1, 2022, the webinars will focus on the topics ‘Communicating with my young person’ and ‘Helping my young person during COVID-19’.

The webinars aim to support parents and carers of young people to: • Strengthen their understanding of mental health • Enhance the conversational approach to mental health and

wellbeing with young people • Build skills and strategies to support young people, including transitions to work and study • Build awareness of local, state, and national supports available to young people Joining each webinar will be a panel of experts, including local headspace centre staff and representatives from other local mental health services.

“The speakers will empower attendees to understand what services are available in their community.

“Attendees will also hear from the headspace Work and Study team about the suite of digital vocational services available for young people at headspace.

“Everyone who registers will also receive a digital information pack,” said Phillip.

The Mid North Coast event date is 28 February.

New program gives back to groups that distributed Covid relief

LOCAL groups and not-for-profit organisations that delivered food and care hampers to community members across regional NSW during the 2021 COVID lockdowns can now apply to recoup up to $30,000 of their distribution costs.

Reimbursed funds will be available in late April 2022.

The Resilience NSW COVID Regional Community Support (CRCS) program will be funded by the NSW Government and administered by the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR).

“This funding opportunity will cover expenses like fuel, couriers, and logistics costs, helping them to continue their wonderful work into the future.”

Resilience NSW Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons recognised the contributions that had been made to support communities impacted

by COVID-19.

“These groups deserve our gratitude for all they have done to support their fellow community members in regional and rural areas of NSW,” said Mr Fitzsimmons.

“This program, which is being run by FRRR on behalf of Resilience NSW, will allow eligible organisations to be reimbursed up to $30,000.”

Natalie Egleton, CEO of FRRR, said that

regional community groups across NSW have worked hard to support their communities through COVID, despite themselves facing funding and operational challenges.

“Rural not-for-profits’ resources are stretched incredibly thin, and for many groups, the costs of distributing these hampers came out of their own pockets, so getting money back into their kitty is vital,” said Ms Egleton.

A second stream of this program will open in March.

The Capacity Building Stream is designed to help strengthen local community groups and not-for-profits in regional areas, so that they are better able to continue supporting their communities through COVID and future crises.

Replacement Bridges To Provide for Soil Erosion, Sediment Control

NAMBUCCA Valley Council last month resolved to endorse the location of the replacement bridge for Sandy’s Crossing, immediately downstream of the existing bridge.

The new bridge will be five metres higher than the old wood bridge.

Council also undertook to adjust the position of an adjacent property gate over residents’ concerns about truck turning movements.

Council resolved to set the gate “further

back with an appropriate fenced splay and any required earthwork and pavement”.

“I drive over this bridge occasionally with work and it does need repair and has been suffering from damage from some of the major rain events that we’ve had,” said Councillor David Jones.

“It is quite an important thoroughfare so it’s a good outcome.”

Council also resolved to consider providing funding specifically aimed at soil erosion and sediment control in budgets for future bridge replacements in the region.

In a foreshadowed motion put forward by Councillor Susan Jenvey and reworded with the assistance of Council members it was moved that Council “makes provision for soil erosion and sediment control in future budgets for bridge replacement”.

The move came during discussion of fines and cautions for non-compliance with conditions of four permits issued under the Fisheries Management Act 1994.

Council received funding of $366,535 under Round 1 of the Fixing Country Bridges program to replace Sandy’s Crossing Bridge on Lower Buckra Bendinni Road.

The new bridge will replace the existing 23m long 5.4m wide two span timber bridge with a 20m long 5.1m wide single span concrete bridge.

Tertiary Scholarships from NSW Farmers THE state’s peak farming body is opening the door to higher education for a handful of members through the NSW Farmers 2022 Tertiary Scholarships.

Scholarships worth $4000 are awarded annually to four members or their children to support their university or vocational qualification in an agriculture-related field.

NSW Farmers Rural Affairs Committee Chair Garry Grant said since its inception in 1993, the scholarship program had shown the Association’s commitment to fostering the future of farming. “There is a wealth of

opportunity in agriculture, and it’s incumbent on us as an industry body to both highlight and help improve access to these opportunities,” Mr Grant said.

“Opportunities in agriculture will only grow more exciting as the sector enjoys a boom period and as technology and innovation drive greater variety and dynamism in agricultural careers.

“The sector has huge potential, and the future success of agriculture truly lies in the hands of the talented younger generation coming through.”

Mr Grant said the scholarships had a proven track record of helping the younger generation find their passion in agriculture.

Georgia Laurie, a sixth-generation cattle farmer studying a Bachelor of Rural Science at the University of New England and 2021 Tertiary Scholarship recipient, spoke excitedly of the opportunities in agriculture.

“The agricultural industry is becoming a highly technical and specialised field where producers must be innovative and abreast of the latest technologies to

compete,” she said.

“As an industry, we must adapt our ways to produce a product that is both environmentally and economically sustainable.”

Applications for Tertiary Scholarships close on Sunday, March 13.

Scholarships will be based on academic performance, commitment to agriculture and rural communities, and all-round ability including leadership qualities and communication skills.

THE pandemic has so far managed to derail attempts by Nambucca Valley Radio 105.9FM to launch their iconic Studio 3 Live Broadcasts for 2022.

The hard working volunteer broadcasters at 2NVR will not be defeated and have lined up another brilliant act to entertain both listeners and the live studio audience alike on Friday 18 February when they present Coffs Harbour’s Casey Alexander performing live and free.

Casey or ‘CJ’, is a young local musician known for his gorgeous tone and relaxed feel.

He has been gigging around the area at restaurants, pubs, cafes, birthdays, weddings, corporate functions and markets with his own original material, as well as hits from the past and present.

Often covering the likes of Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes, Linkin Park and Lewis Capaldi, Casey serenades his audience and has developed a reputation for keeping them captivated and entertained.

Selected in the Waterloo Studios’ Talent Development Project, Casey is working towards a career in singer/ songwriting, already acclaiming many achievements such as placing Top 10 in the International vocal competition ‘Permission to Shine’ and receiving an honourable mention, first place in open division in the Woolgoolga ‘Your Time to

Shine’ Talent Contest and first place in the ‘Self-accompanied’ section of the Coffs Harbour vocal eisteddfod.

IN A WORLD where people place kudos on working long hours and only grabbing a few hours sleep, and feel guilty about savouring a yummy chocolate ice-cream, it might seem that simple pleasures are not valued anymore. Southern Cross University’s Coffs Harbour psychology researcher, Dr Desirée Kozlowski, is challenging that by launching a nationwide survey to find out how Australians perceive their own pleasure, or lack thereof.

And she’s inviting you to participate in the National Pleasure Audit, an online survey open to all Australians aged over 18.

So, why does Dr Kozlowski want to know more about our experiences of pleasure?

“Pleasure is well documented to be good for our mental health and wellbeing, yet we have it upside down both individually and societally,” Dr Kozlowski told News Of The Area.

“The evidence is growing that increasing our range of pleasurable experiences has a wide range of benefits, from reducing perceived stress, depression and anxiety to increasing resilience, boosting our immune function and even to longevity,” she said.

A specialist in the research field of pleasure and emotional intelligence, Dr Kozlowski says many people think pleasure has to come from big things, like a holiday, yet that typically lasts just a couple of weeks.

“In fact, what seems to bring the most benefits is building a wider variety of small pleasures into each day.

“From stopping to enjoy the smell of coffee and the warm feeling of the cup in your hand, to stepping into a hot shower, or walking on the grass with no shoes on, all these

Destination Australia Scholarships help SCU students

SOUTHERN Cross University has attracted nearly a million dollars in scholarship funding for students who commence their studies at the University’s Coffs Harbour and Lismore campuses this year.

Part of the Australian Government’s Destination Australia scheme, the scholarship provides selected full-time students $15,000 per year to complete their degree, for a maximum of four years.* Vice President, Engagement, Mr Ben Roche said the scholarships were a fantastic incentive to study regionally.

“We’re lucky enough to be located in some of Australia’s most beautiful regions with beaches and World Heritage rainforests

literally at our doorstep.

“Immersing yourself in the lifestyle and studying here is really quite a privilege and these scholarships can make it that much more affordable,” he said.

Bachelor of Occupational Therapy student Caleb Bosshard received a Destination Australia scholarship in 2021.

He says it has given him greater capacity to achieve the grades he wants by being able to redirect his focus on study instead of worrying about finances.

“The Destination Australia Scholarship has been helpful for me.

‘I’m receiving $15,000 a year which adds up to $60,000 over the four years of my degree,” said Caleb, who

lives in Dorrigo and studies at Southern Cross University Coffs Harbour campus.

“When studying full time, the last thing you want to worry about is money.

“The Destination Australia scholarship has really helped me focus on what's important and pursue my passion in Occupational Therapy.

“Without it, I would not be where I am today.

“I am able to work parttime as a lifeguard at Dorrigo Swim Centre and and continue with studies full-time.

“The scholarship takes a load off so I can put my main focus on my degree.

“My words of advice for anyone who wants to apply is get in and organised and do it as early as possible, ahead of the suggested timeline.

“I’d definitely recommend students to apply.”

Caleb says he is glad he could study Occupational Therapy locally in the Coffs Harbour region to continue living near family and enjoying the regional coastal lifestyle, while studying at a University with smaller class sizes, where the teachers know you by name.

He said another highlight of the course is learning in state-of-the-art health facilities.

“The new Health Sciences Building at Southern Cross Uni Coffs Harbour campus has taken the study of the health sciences to the next level.

“Its cutting-edge facilities and engaging environment has helped me develop the skills and knowledge needed

to succeed in the healthcare industry.

“I started Occupational Therapy in 2021 as OTs are in high demand in Australia and I liked the idea of a career in this industry where I get to help people.

Landmark State-Federal Agreement To Build Dozens of Local Affordable Homes

UP to 40 ‘affordable homes’ will be built across two locations in Bellingen for low-income older women following a landmark agreement between the state and federal governments and the Royal Freemasons Benevolent Institution (RFBI).

State Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey said the State and Federal governments would jointly fund the $10 million project to deliver “much-needed low-cost housing” for low-income women over the age of 55.

“House prices and rents on the mid-North coast have risen by 30 percent in the past 12 months placing incredible

pressure on housing markets like Coffs Harbour and Bellingen,” Mrs Pavey said.

“Women aged 55 and over are the fastest growing demographic when it comes to homelessness and this agreement will allow us to bring forward new homes faster.

This $5 million investment by the State Government will change the lives of vulnerable people for generations to come.”

Federal Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan said the dwellings would be built at two sites owned by the RFBI at Watson Street and Bowra Street, Bellingen.

“In order to tackle some

of the housing challenges facing NSW we need to embrace partnerships,” Mr Conaghan said.

“The RFBI put forward an innovative proposal that I agreed was critical for our community.

“I contacted then Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack to secure the $5million of Federal Funding.

“The day following the appointment of Barnaby Joyce back into the role of Deputy Prime Minister, I met with him to ensure that funding would continue.

“This project represents value for money to Government and will ensure a safe space for older, vulnerable women.”

“This project has come directly out of local community concerns and our mission as an organization to care for the vulnerable,” said Frank Price, CEO of RFBI. “I’m very pleased to be able to partner with both the Commonwealth and NSW Governments to deliver affordable housing … greatly needed by the local community,” Mr Price said.

Sydney Swans partner with AFL North Coast to help pathways to big time football q Members of the Sydney Swans Academy.

AFL North Coast’s top junior players will now have a better avenue and opportunity to make big-time footy such as the AFL or VFL competitions, thanks to a partnership between the QBE Sydney Swans Academy and AFL North Coast.

The partnership will see the North West, North Coast Force, and Northern Heat rep programs co-branded with the Swans Academy, allowing a greater number of development opportunities for talented and committed players.

This partnership will provide a clear process for high performing players in the region to be selected to attend Sydney metro sessions for potential selection in higher level Swans Academy programs.

Community Football and Competition Manager ‑ Northern NSW, Paul Taylor explained the significance of the partnership with the Sydney Swans Academy.

“This means opportunities for more local players to be included in the pathway and train in the region, whilst also having the chance to be identified to go further in terms of NAB League with the Swans, National Championships, and even to the Draft and AFL recruitment,” he said.

“This is especially important in the North West region where no opportunity has previously existed.

“Last week’s announcement of Sunday footy for juniors and the introduction of a Youth Girls competition means more kids of both genders can play club footy than ever before, and this announcement means they can go as far in the sport as their talent and commitment will take them.”

Taylor said that the partnership with the Swans would be a real boost for the

local representative programs.

“Both North West and North Coast will field teams in the Under 13, Under 15, Under 17, and Youth Girls age groups, and all of these players will now be under the tutelage of Sydney Swans supported coaches who can recommend them for further opportunities,” he said.

“The North Coast has had a local Swans Academy program for many years where the participant numbers were limited.

“There are now significantly more

opportunities for players to be identified and to proceed along the pathway.

“The North West has never had a structured opportunity like this before for players to go further in the game.

“With Junior club footy moving to Sundays, a Youth Girls competition starting, and now a pathway to the Sydney Swans, there’s never been a better chance to find the next Sam Naismith.”

Local representative coaches will have access to coaching programs and resources that have been

developed by the Sydney Swans AFL personnel for use in the delivery of the representative programs.

Head of the QBE Sydney Swans Academy, Chris Smith, is thrilled by the prospect of unearthing talent in Northern NSW. “It’s an exciting development for the Swans Academy,” he said.

“This allows us a broader reach into regions that have talented juniors across numerous sports.

“Those juniors now have an opportunity to showcase

their talent, as well as their commitment and focus towards being the best AFL player they can be.

“Top performing players will now have a clear pathway towards Northern Heat selection, Academy, and ultimately, the National Championships.”

Trials for the North West representative teams and North Coast Force will be staged in March.

Players selected in the programs will have the chance to compete at carnivals during the footy season.

Community Football and Competition Manager Paul Taylor also praised the efforts and work of the young players training over summer.

“Another outstanding Northern Heat training session on Saturday, with the players showing that they’ve done the hard physical work over the summer break by recording

improved testing times,” he said.

“The session also encompassed more footy specific drills, with the players really starting to get their heads around playing a modern style of footy that’s reflected in the higher levels of the sport.”

The Northern Heat

representative AFL program comprises the best players from the North Coast and North West regions in Under 15 and Under 17 squads.

The off-season program exists to extend the representative pathway for the players of the regions and provide them with a further avenue to build their game

ahead of transitioning towards senior footy.

The Northern Heat squad has further training sessions on Saturday, 26 February in Coffs Harbour and Saturday, 19 March in Armidale, before it wraps up on Saturday, 9 April with matches on the Gold Coast against the Southport Sharks.

Northern Heat rep teams put in the hard yards over summer

THE North Coast’s best junior Australian Rules players have put in the hard yards training over summer, which has paid dividends after being put through their paces during their first training session of 2022.

The Northern Heat players' work over summer was reflected in their excellent testing results achieved in last weekend’s training session in Armidale.

The two squads were put through their paces with a 1km time trial to determine who had completed the program set for them over the summer, with the Northern Heat rep players achieving excellent results.

The vast majority of the squad achieved a marked improvement against the times recorded in early December, proving the point that hard work really does pay off.

Mid-transaction Tragedy

ROBERT sells his home for $1 million.

A deposit of $100,000 is paid on the exchange of contracts and settlement is scheduled to occur 42 days later.

Unfortunately, Robert unexpectedly passes-away three weeks after contracts are exchanged.

The contract contains the standard conditions, which do not allow the purchaser to ‘rescind’ or cancel the contract in the event of the vendor’s death.

The contract does however include the usual provision that if the vendor is unable to proceed to settlement, the purchaser can issue a 14 day notice, after such time they are entitled to terminate the contract and have the deposit returned.

Robert’s son Peter, makes an urgent appointment with Robert’s solicitor.

Peter discovers that he is appointed as his father’s executor.

However, he is also advised that in order to proceed to settlement of sale, he will need to obtain a grant of probate and that this can take several months.

Peter is worried about losing the sale and the prospect of a damages claim against the estate for breach of contract.

Peter is advised by the solicitor that he can make an urgent application to the Supreme Court for a special grant of administration which will allow the sale to proceed.

The solicitor proceeds to draft affidavits, outlining the execution of Robert’s will and explaining the urgency of the application.

The Court conducts an urgent hearing and after carefully considering the application, appoints Peter as the administrator of Robert’s estate, with limited temporary powers of administration which allow him to execute the documentation that is required to complete the sale and to pay the proceeds of sale into the solicitor’s trust account, on behalf of the estate.

The Court dispenses with the usual requirement of advertising the administrator’s intention to apply and other evidentiary requirements, on the basis that Peter will ultimately obtain a grant of probate which will supersede the limited grant.

OPINION

CUCUMBERS are super easy to grow here and kindly prolific with fruit.

The Coffs Harbour area is a commercial growing hub for cucumbers, though usually in greenhouses to meet the perfectionist requirements of supermarkets year round.

For backyard gardeners, cucumbers are grown ‘in the field’ and do very well at providing more than enough cucumber for a household and neighbours.

There are a number of cucumber-like plants to explore as well who are similarly prolific cucamelon (Melothria scabra), kiwano (Cucumis metuliferus) and caigua (Cyclanthera pedata).

All of these plants are warm season friends with no tolerance for frost.

None will cross with each other.

Cucumber/Cucumis sativus The biggest issue with cucumber growing here is (Jaws theme tune...) powdery mildew.

Ensuring good airflow around your cucumber plant (grow them up a trellis) and having excellent soil health will both help keep this plant killer at bay.

Make gardening easier, grow varieties that are resistant to powdery mildew.

You can plant cucumbers from August through to March here.

The temperature needs to be 15°C for germination, but they sprout better when the weather is 21 - 29°C. Sow 1 - 2cm deep.

They take 2 - 4 weeks to be ready to transplant out.

Plant 30 - 60cm apart, rows over a metre

wide.

Plant density affects airflow around them so space them further apart if this is likely to be an issue.

Cucumbers do best in soil rich in compost and manures.

They can be grown in containers of at least 20L. They love a continuous even supply of water and nutrients.

They like lots of light and warmth between 22 - 34°C. They will appreciate regular seaweed or fertiliser drinks throughout their life.

Avoid wetting the leaves as this encourages the dreaded powdery mildew.

Depending on variety, you need to wait 7 - 12 weeks before picking.

They are pollinated by bees.

The height of cucumber picking season is December - February.

Once picking starts it may become a daily task if you dare - the more you pick, the more the plant will create. Do your picking in the early morning.

Cut, don't pull them off the vine.

Pulling tends to tear the fruit and this means it will start to rot.

Cucumbers are ready for seed saving when they are huge and yellow and thoroughly unappealing, many weeks past when you would consider eating them.

ABOUT one million families can now enjoy $250 worth of vouchers, thanks to the NSW Government’s Parents NSW program going live from Monday, 7 February.

Eligible families will receive five $50 vouchers which can be redeemed at Discover NSW and Stay NSW registered businesses.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said this program was a big win for households and would help ease the cost of living for busy parents.

“This is all about thanking parents for their home schooling efforts last year, helping make ends meet and supporting local businesses.

Parents have persevered and balanced a variety of challenges as a result of home learning, and we are grateful for their hard work and sacrifices,” Mr Perrottet said.

"This will also put downward pressure on the cost of living by helping families across the State get out and enjoy the best our State has to offer while leaving them with more money in their back-pocket to spend on the everyday essentials."

In addition, the Stay NSW voucher program, providing every adult aged 18 and older with a $50 voucher to spend at registered

accommodation providers, will be progressively rolled out from 21 February.

Both programs will be implemented using the existing Dine & Discover NSW infrastructure.

“These vouchers are a double win – they encourage families to get out and enjoy the best of our State, while also providing much needed income to businesses affected by the pandemic,” Mr Perrottet said.

Treasurer Matt Kean said the vouchers form part of the NSW Government’s $2.8 billion COVID-19 Economic Recovery Strategy announced in October and come on the back of the more than $1 billion COVID business support package recently announced.

“These vouchers are a win-win for industry and families and encourage more families to explore our incredible State and bolster local economies,” Mr Kean said.

“We’ve stood shoulder to shoulder with industry throughout the pandemic and this is another program that will help keep businesses open and keep workers in jobs.”

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said households would be able to apply for both programs via Service NSW.

The fact you have named them Trinity and Karl means they are no longer livestock, they are family members, and family members have responsibilities, but they also have rights.

Are your chooks free ranging? (You sound like the sort of environmentally conscious person who would ensure the chooks have lots of space to roam).

If so, I think you should know that despite their cute, clucking noises, chooks are masters at subterfuge.

They could, in fact, be laying in a secret location and there may be a whole stockpile of eggs that you won't find until you detect a rancid, rotting smell.

Chooks also mature at different stages.

Your chooks may not be willing to lay and will probably do so when they are good and ready - thank you very much (did I mention that, apart from being tricksters, they can be quite stubborn?).

There is also a slim chance that your chooks have a genetic defect and/or are roosters and/or are anti-vaxxers that are not clucking, they are actually chanting 'my body, my choice', which is a terrible form of appropriation that does little to advance their cause, but there's no telling some chooks.

This season, the brides and grooms are as ambitious, outspoken and as game for a fight – and affair – as ever. It’s sassy, superfluous TV at its lowbrow best. Tonight, resident sex therapist Alessandra Rampolla’s intimacy week begins with some couples blooming, while others struggle to connect with their partners. Whether you tune in for the slim chance of a love story, or the thrill of the petty squabbles and flirting, there’s almost something for everyone.

Sometimes, the truth really is much stranger than fiction.

When journalist, presenter and podcaster Marc Fennell learnt about the infamous theft of Picasso’s Weeping Woman in 1986 from the National Gallery of Victoria, he was gobsmacked and, in true journalist style, needed to find out more. This four-part true-crime doco launched on SBS On Demand late last year and it’s plain to see why it has become their most successful digital series ever: it’s a largerthan-life riddle which is amazingly still yet to be solved. In tonight’s first episode, the bizarre art theft, complete with ransom notes, is given the fine-tooth comb treatment by Fennell.
