“The NRC warned of ‘serious and irreversible harm to environmental values from the cumulative impacts of fire and harvesting’ in some areas of burnt forests and recommended significant additional restrictions

This project received grant funding from the Australian Government.

The total amount of the grant is $1,786,800.

“The project will upgrade and secure power, communications and amenities at the Club to provide support to members of the local community affected by natural disasters,” said a Club spokesperson.

“The grant funding will upgrade the Club’s power infrastructure including installation of additional roof solar panels, and provide independent and reliable 24/7 communications and power via a battery bank, diesel generator and satellite communications facility.

“An external LED sign will provide emergency updates to the community.

ABORIGINAL author and climate activist Tony Birch is appearing in three sessions at the Bellingen Readers & Writers Festival (BR&WF), June 10-12.

At the election all eight Councillor roles for the Kempsey local government area will be re-elected.

The NSW Electoral Commission announced the

date late on Monday 6 June after weeks of consideration since the conclusion of the NSW Supreme Court case.

The Supreme Court wrapped up proceedings

on Thursday 5 May having approved the application by the NSW Electoral Commission to void the result of the local government election in three shires, including Kempsey, requiring a by-election be held.

The eight Councillors declared elected following the election in December last year will remain in the role until the day of the election.

The Kempsey Mayoral election was not materially impacted and the election of Kempsey Shire Mayor Leo Hauville was not challenged by the Electoral Commission.

As such he will remain in office until the next full local government election in 2024.

The accused man was charged at Macksville Police Station and refused bail to appear at Kempsey Local Court on 30/5/22.

The accused was sentenced with a two year Community Corrections Order.

On 30/5/22 at about 7:40pm emergency services were alerted to a motor vehicle accident on

the Pacific Hwy, Eungai Creek.

A truck was travelling south when a wind storm caused a large tree to fall onto the cabin of the prime mover causing extensive damage.

By-standers assisted the driver until the arrival of emergency services personnel.

The driver was later conveyed to Coffs Harbour Health Campus for treatment.

The truck and trailer were towed from the scene and the highway was reopened.

Macksville Resilient Communities visit City of Hope

MACKSVILLE Resilient Communities participants and facilitators attended their June meeting at an outstanding example of a sustainable community.

Architect Reiner Schimminger, the designer of City of Hope, a project of four sustainably-conscious two-storey houses, located off Harbour Drive in Coffs Harbour, opened his doors to the Mid North Coast groups of OzGREEN’s Resilient Communities program recently.

The focus topic for the group this month is water, which Reiner covered in detail, but with the opportunity of sharing Reiner’s knowledge and experience designing, building and living in the City of Hope, the group also asked questions about power and growing food.

Dale Newling, Volunteer Community Facilitator, OzGREEN Resilient Communities Macksville, told News Of The Area, “It was awesome to join 20plus of my fellow OzGREEN North Coast and Resilient Communities Volunteer Community Facilitators and participants on an urban ecovillage site visit on Saturday last, to City of Hope in Coffs Harbour and have a conversation with architect and builder Reiner Schimminger of Schimminger Architects about sustainable living.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to observe progressive measures of sustainability and community in a built environment.

“I came away with lots of ideas, inspiration and renewed radical hope,” says Dale.

Construction of the four houses began in 2016, completing the last in 2019, with Reiner moving into his home in 2018.

The project won the Sustainability Awards’ Best of the Best Award and Landscape and Biophilia Award in 2019.

Reiner, a passionate environmentalist and climate change campaigner, sought a tangible example of his philosophy and skills.

The City of Hope project does just that in a fascinating build of four homes with roof-top gardens.

The aim of the City of

Hope was to create the foundation for a sustainable future, within the density of our communities.

Density living, applicable to towns, not offthe-grid style.

To achieve comfort, safety, health and wellbeing, not only for ourselves but the entire web of life around us, is the philosophy.

“There are two key criteria: not to take up any more green space and no CO2 emissions, no combustion of anything,” said Reiner With the Coffs Coast experiencing a long season of heavy rain, the water system at City of Hope has been put to the test and has functioned well.

“Water is precious,” said Reiner, “water can also be dangerous.”

So, you build a house that doesn’t leak and manage your surface water and use your ground water.

“Nothing (no water) leaves the site uncontrolled.”

There are gratings and a biofiltration system, as well as the water going through the pond and then out into the stormwater system.

“Water that falls onto the surface of the roof garden goes into a gutter, then into an irrigation water tank which pumps it around all the plants in a recirculating system.”

The houses are connected to town water if supplies get low.

“It reminds us that water is precious – don’t waste it,” says Reiner.

“Urban food production here is done by growing on trellises fixed to the side of the building.

“Growing food is much harder than we think – and we have to learn our parents’ traditional storage methods…we need to do more preserving.”

When considering a project like this, Reiner says it has to start with a conversation, asking yourself ‘what is practical?’, ‘what is reasonable?’ and ‘what can you afford?’.

Asking yourself questions about the way you live, consume, connect and care.

City of Hope challenges preconceptions about what a house should look like.

The four homes, nestled in a hillside garden setting, are a stunning sight to behold.

From the top down, the project enables a considered approach to climate change and architecture “aiming at the most advanced measures of sustainability in the built environment possible today”.

The project is a work in progress fed by new opportunities and lived experience of the four homeowners.

Friends for Older People The Mid North Coast’s Community Visitors Scheme needs volunteers

By Andrea FERRARI THE Mid North Coast Community Visitors Scheme (CVS) is seeking new volunteers and is recruiting now.

CVS is a local provider of an Australian Government initiative for socially-isolated elderly people residing in aged care facilities.

That’s older folk probably rarely seeing family or friends other than fellow residents in their facility.

Jan Gaunt coordinates CVS in the Coffs Coast region, extending from Woolgoolga, Coffs, Raleigh, Bellingen, Dorrigo, and into the Nambucca Valley region to Nambucca and Macksville.

“I am looking for anyone who would be interested in offering ongoing friendship to individual residents in one of the local aged care facilities, in a convenient location near you,” Jan told News Of The Area.

“Also, if someone was interested in providing small group sessions, i.e craft/

conversations/music or whatever you think they may enjoy, this would also be very welcome.

“Residents love the opportunity to engage, share, and interact with their visitor and each other.

“I especially need new visitors in the Bellingen/ Raleigh areas,” said Jan. Mary, a Community Visitor, has been visiting Fred at his nursing home for 20

months.

Mary says, “I really look forward to seeing Fred each week, we get on so well.

“Fred lost his wife just before I met him and was very down.

“Gradually over the months, he has perked up, and loves to chat about life on the farm he and his wife ran, and the funny things that happened.

“I get a big smile from him

when I walk through the door, and says to me, ‘Well, Mary love, what’s on the agenda today?’” said Mary.

For potential volunteer visitors, Jan says there’s a number of lonely, isolated residents who would appreciate your time and interest.

Many of the people CVS visits are without immediate family or friends.

“All you need is a couple

Activities can range from having a chat, a walk in the gardens, or going out for a cuppa.

VIEW Club calls for donations to Winter Appeal Nambucca River VIEW Club calls on community to give generously to The Smith Family’s Winter Appeal NAMBUCCA River VIEW Club is urging the local community to give generously to The Smith Family’s Winter Appeal this year, to support thousands of children and young people with their education as they deal with the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, The Smith Family aims to raise $5.4 million by June 30 to provide learning and mentoring support programs to children in need. VIEW is the largest community sponsor of students on The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, which is why its members are calling on Australians to get behind the appeal.

The Smith Family’s CEO, Doug Taylor, said support from the public is vital, and will help the charity extend its reach.

This is especially important with a national survey conducted by the charity revealing families are still worried about their children’s education, even as Australia emerges from the pandemic.

“Helping students in need who are struggling at school is a focus of The Smith Family’s work.

“And what we’re seeing in this third year of the pandemic is the need is greater than ever.

“Our survey found that more than half of parents

and carers believe COVID is continuing to make schooling difficult for their children, with disrupted routines, illness, and mental health all key concerns.

“It’s alarming that 70 percent of respondents said they are worried about their children’s schoolwork in the future.

“We want to extend our tailored learning support programs to help more children over the coming year address these issues, and to ensure they can thrive in their education once again,” he said.

Funds raised will support 12,857 children across Australia to access a range of proven numeracy,

reading, and mentoring programs, including after school Learning Clubs.

Nambucca River VIEW Club president, Marion Watts, said support from the community is vital in this difficult time.

“COVID has been so disruptive for all of us, but children experiencing

disadvantage have felt this impact more than most.

“By donating to The Smith Family this appeal, we can ensure those children who are most in need can get the best out of their education,” she said.

Sun comes out for Valla beach Commu THE first Saturday of June meant it was time for the Valla Beach Community Markets.

With the sun shining, 86 stallholders turned out at the Valla Reserve to offer a fabulous variety of wares including fresh food, plants, clothing and arts and crafts.

“We certainly had the weather for the market, with the ground drying out in time to welcome the community,” said Ceri Wrobel, Valla Beach Community Association.

Ceri said there was something on offer for everyone.

“Children were entertained by the Bubble Lady who created enormous bubbles to the delight of all.

“Hula hoops were also popular as were puzzles with Philida,” Ceri said.

Several community groups and organisations were in attendance providing information about their causes and services; including TAFE, the Nambucca Youthie,

“This market we had a fundraiser at the gate for the Northern Rivers Flood Appeal and people donated generously,” Ceri said.

The markets are held the first Saturday of the even months, the next one will take place on August 6.

past and assured me that they had also purchased a few extra for gifts,” Laura said.

Noel sold sixteen pens on the day, raising $57 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

U3A Fishing For Fun In May

YOU just can’t tell what the weather will be these days.

It was expected that this outing could have been cancelled due to the rain and contingency plans were drawn up for a bit of indoor training.

The complete opposite happened with the fishing being one of the best weather days imaginable, warm and sunny. Only a lack of fish could spoil the day.

With the permission of the Golf Club we settled in on the river bank near the clubhouse.

The running out tide made for testing conditions but that is when experience prevails and plenty of juvenile fish were caught, however only a couple were suitable for the dinner

The winner of the A Grade Medal was Graham Weary (11) with net 69, runner up was Stephen Carr (6) with 71 net. Scratch winner was Allan O’Brien 82.

The B Grade the Medal winner was Joe Street (18) with 68 net, runner up was Stephen McNeil (13) with 70 net. Scratch winner was Garry Johnstone 83.

In C Grade, Robert Handley (26) from Moruya won with 71 net, and runner up was Joanne Miles (24) also from Moruya with 73 net on countback.

Scratch winner was Andrew Johnston 93, and he also won the Member’s Medal.

MEMBERS played their first sessions as a newly affiliated club of the New South Wales Bridge Association.

The president, Col Denney, welcomed people for our first session and recommended they bring their ‘a game’ as today they were playing for masterpoints.

were Stephen and Amber Fox with a credible score of 66.67 percent followed closely by Gillian and John Buganey with 57.74 percent.

Stephen and Amber were awarded 0.24 green master points.

Swimming North Coast Short Course Championships THE Swimming North Coast Championships were held in two venues over June 4 and 5, with the results merged together to get a result in each event.

In the north of the region the venue was the Evans Head Aquatic centre and the southern venue was the Great Lakes Aquatic Centre in Forster.

The Club Point score was won by Coffs Harbour with a massive 6,629 points, Alstonville was second and third was Trinity Lismore.

The rest of the top ten were Forster,

all with 72 net.

Defence Prevails

AFTER a three week break the Nambucca Strikers women’s team returned to the field to hold the Orara Valley Dingoes to a 0-0 draw.

The draw is a testament to the squad’s development, having conceded three goals to the Dingoes in a 3-1 loss earlier in the season.

Strikers coach Rhys Jones provided insights into the match.

“Fresh off a win in the previous week against Urunga, Orara would not be an easy team to play,” he said.

Roosters take on the Rebels

THE Nambucca Roosters travelled to Grafton on Sunday short on troops and a little under done due to the pesky flu that is going around at the moment to take on the South Grafton Rebels.

It didn’t deter the players or dampen their spirits though, with everyone performing admirably which didn’t go unnoticed, even by the South Grafton crowd and teams who acknowledged the efforts on display.

Ladies League Tag: 20-4 loss The ladies started the better of the two teams and looked on top for the first 15 minutes.

The opposition made the most of some fatigue and scored a couple of quick tries.

The ladies however fought their way back into the game with the final score line not indicative of such a close contest.

Reserve Grade: 48-8 loss The lads went into the game missing some key

players and only having three on the bench. They battled hard though with the only difference being some individual brilliance from a couple of the opposition players.

Several injuries hampered the Roosters’ chances, who finished the game short on troops.

First Grade: 44-20 loss With six or seven regular first graders missing from the line-up, things were always going to be tough for the boys.

In saying that, the Roosters went out to an early 10-0 lead and were looking the goods.

Errors, penalties and a weight of possession lead to the opposition getting on top of the contest. The boy’s

AFTER two years and three months the Grumpster has finally caught COVID and luckily it was last week and not this week.

The final of the Men's Major Pairs was played on 4 June in weather that has been a rarity for a long time.

It was a typical winter day warm, sunny and when the sun dropped so too did the temperature but lucky for the players they finished before dark.

The team of Paul Ward and Rhys Riddell 28 defeated Alan Cosgrave and Bruce Mason 10 before a huge crowd and it was nice to see Bob Somerville partaking of an old beer with brother Ken

fought all the way to the final siren though and should be proud of their efforts.

Club legend Michael Ronan played a full game and did not look out of place in the first grade side.

Ben Cockbain came out of the grandstand to pull on the boots and played through injury valiantly.

Nelson Langley backed up from the 18's in another stand out performance for the young lad. Dean Buchanan, Mitchell Williamson-Roe and Michael Tyerman all backed up from reserve grade in stellar fashion.

Applications for fourth round of NNSW Facilities Fund now open

APPLICATIONS for the fourth round of Northern NSW Football’s (NNSWF) Facilities Fund are now open.

Northern NSW Football’s Facilities Fund was established in 2019 and aligns with the NSW Football Infrastructure Strategy.

The fund has seen NNSWF invest $714,928 in community football infrastructure projects since its inception, with partner funding of $848,199 taking the total project value to $1,563,127.

These fourteen projects have supported more than 6,500 players, referees, coaches and volunteers and have included lighting, amenities and field upgrades.

The Facilities Fund was established in order to assist football clubs to partner with local stakeholders such as Local Government Authorities, state government, schools, other sports and relevant landowners to: - Improve the football experience for players, referees, coaches and volunteers - Provide opportunities for more participants to play more football more often - Improve the safety of community facilities Provide inclusive football opportunities within clubs - Improve security at community football facilities.

Northern NSW Football Community Football Manager Ross Hicks said funding came from a portion of player registration fees,

with football money going back into helping football clubs.

“The Facilities Fund provides clubs another avenue to seek significant funding for facility projects and in turn increase participation, improve safety and security, assist in building stronger communities through football and improve the overall football experience for their members and stakeholders,” Hicks said.

“We would particularly encourage clubs from the Football Far North Coast and North Coast Football regions that have been impacted by the devastating flood disaster earlier this year to make an application.

“We have seen the positive impacts the fund has already had on clubs and their facilities.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for clubs. Please don’t miss out.”

Applications opened on Wednesday 1 June, with applications to close on Friday 15 July.

Successful applications will be announced in August to coincide with the Future of Football roadshow.

NNSWF is committed to improving places to play, a focus area set out in its Play On Strategic Plan.

NNSWF’s goal is to increase the number of football facilities that are fit for purpose, welcoming and support the growth of the game.

Deemed consent and non-disclosure MAX and Dave were joint owners of a café business.

They both executed a retail lease, which had three years to run with an option to renew for an additional 5 years.

Max had a young family and found it difficult to juggle work, kids and surfing, so he decided to sell his share in the business to Dave.

Dave wrote to the Landlord, requesting consent to Max assigning the lease and making Dave solely responsible for the lease.

A couple of weeks went by, and Dave had not heard from his landlord, Dave contacted the landlord again, as the sale of the business was subject to the assignment of the lease and both Max and Dave were keen to settle the business sale.

The landlord knew Max well and was aware of his strong financial position but was not so familiar with Dave.

With a view to assessing the merits of the proposed assignment of lease, the landlord asked Dave to provide information on his ‘financial standing’.

Dave did not comply with the request.

Months went by and the landlord had not provided consent to the assignment to Dave.

Dave’s lawyer commenced court action, seeking a declaration that the landlord had unreasonably withheld consent.

The court found that the Landlord’s request for information concerning Dave’s “financial standing” lacked the essential “specificity” to which a lessee was entitled to expect from such a request and held that the landlord’s consent to the assignment of the lease was deemed to have been given.

Although the landlord was entitled to request information regarding Dave’s financial position, a landlord must specify which particular documents are sought, such as financial statements and tax returns for a specified period, or otherwise clearly define what is required from the lessee.

A landlord must also deal expeditiously with a request for consent to an assignment of lease or risk consent being deemed to be given.

$2,000 rebate for IVF treatments

WOMEN in the Nambucca Valley undergoing IVF and accessing other assisted reproductive treatments are set to benefit from an Australian-first cash rebate of up to $2,000 to reduce treatment costs as part of the NSW Government’s 2022-23 Budget.

Under the $80 million package around 12,000 women across the state who are using private fertility clinics will benefit from the rebate, while another 6,180 women will be given access to publicly supported IVF treatment.

Treasurer Matt Kean said about one in 20 births in Australia involve some form of assisted reproductive treatment.

“We know that the costs of these treatments can be prohibitively expensive,” Mr Kean said.

“No-one should have to face the impossible choice between looking after their household budget and starting a family. I’m so proud NSW continues to lead the nation, helping thousands of families fulfil their dream of having a baby.”

In addition to the rebate, the package will also extend rebates for pre-IVF fertility testing, boost the number of fertility preservation services for patients

with cancer and other medical needs and provide five days of paid fertility treatment leave for teachers, nurses and other public servants across NSW. The NSW Government has also committed to investing funding towards the establishment of a hub and spoke model that expands publicly supported IVF services to regional NSW. Minister for Women Bronnie Taylor said that one in every six couples experiences fertility issues.

“Fertility challenges can be stressful and heartbreaking.

“I hope that by lowering the cost of treatments, we can help more women on their journey to start a family,” Mrs Taylor said.

Eligible families will be able to receive up to $2,000 depending on the cost of their required treatment.

Rebates are only available for eligible treatments offered by accredited clinics, ensuring the highest standards for all families.

This is an Australian-first investment which builds upon the NSW Government’s $42 million election commitment for affordable IVF. The $2,000 rebate will open 1 January 2023.

Women who have undergone an eligible procedure from 1 October 2022 will be able to submit a claim when the rebate scheme opens.

There have been numerous times when my children have done the same, and since the buses in Port Stephens are few and far between, often there is no choice but to try to catch the bus, performing desperate overtaking manoeuvres and knowing you're doomed once the bus gets past the sandhills due to a lack of stops.

Does your daughter have the transport App on her phone?

She can use this to see where the bus is in real time, thereby avoiding uncomfortable scenes where she is begging and you are admonishing, while at the same time recalling how you put your own mother through the exact same scenario almost every morning when you somehow managed to miss the school bus (which may or may not have been because the car was so much more comfortable and took you right to the gate instead of enduring the killer hill to the school).

I'd ensure you have some sort of system in place where each time she misses the bus, she either forgoes the activity or else pays you the cost of an Uber/taxi (which, let's face it, is the only alternative).

Then she may see the value in improving her time-management skills.

Created by ubiquitous Emmy Award-winning producer Dick Wolf, this spin-off sees Christopher Meloni (below) reprise his role as volatile former SVU Detective Elliot Stabler. After a decade away trying to rebuild his life following a personal loss, the intense enforcer of justice has been kept busy in this second season as a bearded undercover agent attempting to infiltrate an Albanian drug ring.

In this episode, Stabler, his partner Ayanna Bell (Danielle Moné Truitt) and the highly capable Organized Crime Control Bureau must work swiftly after a deadly bombing rocks the NYPD and leaves several suspects in the wind.

Detective Velasco (Octavio Pisano) then becomes embroiled in his accuser’s problems, leading the SVU crew to defend him. There is nothing here that will convert newcomers to the series, but those attracted to the darker side of human nature may find themselves drawn in.

By David WIGLEY FOOTBALL returned to Coronation Park after three weeks of field closures but spirits weren’t dampened as the Nambucca Strikers chalked up their first win of the season, defeating Coffs Coast Tigers 3-1.

Jacob Staines excited the crowd in the midweek round six catch-up fixture after 20 minutes with his first goal of the season.

“After some ball movement a few blocked shots from the Tigers keeper saw Ethan put his second for the night away. “Corey in goals was directing the play and saving what attempts on goals came his way, in the final few minutes of the match saw Tigers score their opener, but left it a little too late, with the Strikers taking home their first win of the season 3-1.”
