A WHALE preservation charity will fund Australia’s first Indigenous-run marine plastic recycling enterprise, transforming waste plastic into objects of desire.

Gowings Whale Trust, the NFP environmental organisation started by Gowings, is financing the MiiMi Aboriginal Corporation to run a recycling operation facilitated by the Plastic Collective to give recycled plastic a new life – out of our waterways and off our beaches.

“This partnership has the potential to be a really transformative project,” said Plastic Collective founder and CEO, Louise Hardman.

“It will help employ local people and protect marine animals, while demonstrating what a circular economy looks like.” The

Giving back to the community through the gift of music

THIS week News Of The Area spoke with veteran community radio broadcaster Dallas Dent, who gives back to the community in a somewhat unconventional way.

Before moving to the Nambucca Valley from Sydney with his family for a sea change in 1992 he had already enjoyed a very interesting life.

Dallas had a career in the print media including two years in London running the news office for John Fairfax and Son. Eventually his role with Fairfax became redundant and the regular visitor to Nambucca Heads decided to take on the new kiosk at the White Albatross Caravan Park.

Dallas said, “I had always wanted to be in radio and I am passionate about music and sport so I signed up as a presenter for a new community radio station, 2NVR.” Originally filling the ten until midnight time slot Dallas soon added a two hour Saturday morning local sports program to his

repertoire which expanded into broadcasting live local rugby league games, making 2NVR one of the first community broadcasters to do so.

Dallas soon became a favourite choice as a master of ceremonies in the district for community events and sport presentation nights and always did these as a volunteer.

It is his latest venture for the community where Dallas has had the biggest impact.

In 2019 Dallas approached

Autumn Lodge Aged Care in Nambucca Heads and offered to play easy listening music for the residents.

Armed with a laptop and a speaker, Dallas went to Autumn lodge one afternoon and put the music on.

As Sinatra and Bing Crosby drifted down the hallways the number of listeners started to grow and his visits to Autumn Lodge became a fortnightly favourite for the residents.

The crowd grew to 40 residents and staff all loving the music while Dallas’s partner Karola took down requests for their next visit.

It was the effect the music had on residents who were bed bound which was the most remarkable.

Dallas said, “People who could hardly move began reacting to the music by tapping their fingers and moving their feet.

“It would give you goosebumps to see how these songs were reaching people,” added Dallas.

So profound was the effect these sessions were having on the residents that Dallas has contemplated taking the music on the road to other Mid North Coast aged care facilities, however COVID has put a stop to this community gesture for now.

Dallas reflects that these visits to Autumn Lodge have been the highlight of his career as a community broadcaster.

Although COVID restrictions have kept Dallas away from delivering the beautiful music in person he will be reaching his fans through a special three hour Frank Sinatra birthday broadcast from 9am Wednesday 15 December on 2NVR.

Nambucca Valley home to Australia’s first Indigenous-run marine plastic recycling enterprise

But the waste is over, now plastic has a price.

Plastic recovered by Aboriginal Sea Rangers will be broken down and turned into plastic pellets, with a monetary value, by the MiiMi Corporation.

The process is funded by a donation of $167,000 from the Gowings Whale Trust to purchase a Shruder Recycling Station, with an equipment stack designed by the Plastic Collective team.

The pellets will be purchased by the Gowings company, Surf Hardware International, for the creation of surfboard fins and surf accessories.

Completing the circle, Surf Hardware International will donate one percent of their profits back to the Gowings Whale Trust, to fund projects like the MiiMi endeavour.

Managing Director of Gowings and founder of Gowings Whale Trust, John Gowing, said he’s excited about the venture’s potential.

“One of the Whale Trust’s key objectives is to improve the quality of the ocean for whales and all marine creatures,” he said.

“We hope to use some of the recycled plastic to make products for

our surfing business, Surf Hardware International.” A resource recovery centre will soon be operational in Bowraville.

The centre will be staffed by six Aboriginal Sea Rangers from Bowraville, Nambucca and Macksville.

They will salvage plastic from the Nambucca marine and river catchments and provide environmental data to the NSW Government.

“Most of the rangers already have a good working knowledge of the cultural aspects of the river and sea country,” explained SCU q Louise Hardman, Patricia Walker and John Gowing.

Adjunct Professor and Director of Aquamarine Australia, Steve Smith, who is guiding the rangers’ activities.

“Fundamentally, this is about Indigenous people looking after the cultural and environmental values of their own river and sea country.”

According to project coordinator Janette Blainey, from MiiMi Aboriginal Corporation in Bowraville, the project will provide meaningful employment.

“It’s going to fulfill their birthright at the same time as providing an economically viable future,” she explained. “Country will

be taken care of by the people whose place in country it is.”

Manager at MiiMi Aboriginal Corporation, Patricia Walker, said it wouldn’t be possible without the support of Gowings Whale Trust.

“It’s great to know there are people with the wherewithal to do this who are really passionate about supporting this country and these waterways in the way that Gowings does,” she said.

As well as ocean and river plastic from the Nambucca Valley, a consistent supply of waste plastic has been secured from ports on the east coast of Australia.

Plastic collection points will also be set up at Gowings’ shopping centre, Coffs Central.

Plastic Collective has established similar micro-enterprises in Indonesia, Malaysia and on the Whitsunday Islands, but Louise Hardman has long wanted to start a project close to home.

“I’m really happy because I feel like I’ve come full circle,” Louise said.

“Having grown up in Coffs Harbour, I’ve had a strong relationship with the marine park, the wildlife, the turtles - this is the project I’ve been hoping for, for a long time.”

Mr Conaghan said the program is looking for projects that will show that existing land management practices being applied on the Mid North Coast can be effectively applied at scale.

“We’re looking for projects that provide trials and demonstrations farmers can learn and then apply on their own farms.

“This is an opportunity for partnerships involving farmers and organisations such as the local Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hub, farming system groups, Rural Research and Development Corporation, and NRM regional bodies.”

The grants process is open until 11 January 2022.

Rhonda Hoban re-elected as Nambucca Valley Martin Ballangarry 3.31 Mayor; Council spots undecided percent, percent, Barry Clow 2.99 percent,

resounding victory after securing 68 percent of the vote, defeating Labor Candidate Cr Susan Jenvey.

In the Councillor race, as of Tuesday 7 December, 100 percent of Formal Votes had been counted while 6.18 percent of Informal/ Other Votes had been counted.

Rhonda Rhoban leads the way with 43.71 percent of formal votes,

followed by Susan Jenvey on 16.54 percent.

Following the Mayoral candidates, the race for the remaining Council spots is a tight one.

James Angel has received 6.71 percent of Formal Votes while Ricky Buchanan received 4.42 percent, closely followed by Trevor Ballangarry on 4.19 percent and David Hall on 4.15 percent.

David Jones has received 3.62

Peter Sobey 1.92 percent, Michael Scafidi 2.91 percent, Troy Vance 2.70 percent and John Wilson 1.82 percent.

There are eight Councillors to be elected from 13 candidates.

5,961 residential and nonresidential electors were enrolled to vote in the election.

Informal/Other Votes will continue to be counted in the coming days.

FARMERS and interested organisations in the Nambucca Valley are encouraged to apply for a share of $23 million available as part of the Future Drought Fund’s Drought Resilient Soils and Landscapes Program, with applications now open.

Pat Conaghan, Federal Member for Cowper, said the competitive grants

process will trial and demonstrate land management practices that support drought resilience.

“There are land management practices that can help farms manage during, and recover quicker after, drought. We want to help bring these practices into the mainstream,” Mr Conaghan said.

“Practices that maintain strong groundcover helps the soil absorb and hold more water for longer and protects it from erosion and weeds.

“This is about making farms more resilient to drought, and support farms here on the Mid North Coast because we know every farm makes a big difference to Australian

The Physical Disability Council of NSW said the Strategy sets an ambitious agenda of priorities but does not answer recent calls to address high rates of poverty experienced by people with disabilities and those who care for them, who rely on income support.

CEO of the Physical Disability Council, Ms Serena Ovens said, “The new Australia’s Disability Strategy appears to be a step forwards in meeting Australia’s commitments under the UNCRPD by increasing the accountability of the broader community in realizing the rights of our members.

“While there is much that is positive about the Strategy, it has a clear agenda on supporting those who can study and work.

“It is important that the Strategy champions the rights of all people with disability, irrespective of who they are or what they can or cannot do.

“We look forward to working with the NSW government to ensure set targets are monitored and outcomes achieved.”

Disability Discrimination Commissioner Dr Ben Gauntlett has been appointed Chair of the Strategy’s Advisory Council which would support the Strategy’s implementation.

“The Advisory Council gives people with disability a permanent role in helping to guide the Strategy over the next decade,” Dr Gauntlett said.

“The success of the Strategy requires a whole-of-community response and only by having the public, businesses and governments working together can we ensure all aspects of Australian life are inclusive and accessible.”

The Strategy will record progress through publishing of annual data, a two yearly implementation report to the Australian Parliament, in addition to state, territory and local government monitoring under disability inclusion plans.

As part of the framework’s strong focus on jobs, Minister Ruston also launched the Disability Employment Strategy, Employ My Ability, to increase workplace engagement and improve recruitment practises.

“We know that work provides people with a sense of independence, confidence and financial security,” Minister Ruston said.

Joint Chairs of the Disability Employment Advisory Committee Dylan Alcott OAM and Simon McKeon AO said it was critical we turn the dial on demonstrating the business benefits of employing a person with disability.

“This strategy highlights the many benefits to employers who focus on inclusion, such as increased revenue and productivity, happier staff and greater customer satisfaction,” Mr McKeon said.

Dylan Alcott said we all have a role to play in changing attitudes.

“Businesses, organisations – the whole community – we all benefit when more people with disability have jobs and careers,” Mr Alcott said.

According to Australian Bureau Statistics data, 47.8 percent of people with disability in 2018 were employed compared to 80.3 percent of people without disability.

A TRANSFORMATIVE new strategy supported by targeted action plans and a robust outcomes framework will help drive change for people with disability over the next decade in the Nambucca Valley and across the country.

Minister for Families and Social Services Anne Ruston said Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021-2031 would be supported by a $250 million investment by the Morrison Government to break down barriers for the 4.4 million Australians with disability.

“People with disability deserve to have the same opportunities as all other Australians,” Minister Ruston said.

“Importantly, key reporting mechanisms will tell us what is and is not working and ensure greater transparency across the life of the Strategy.”

Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan welcomed the release of the Strategy and said that it would assist individuals in the Nambucca Valley to reach their full potential.

“Our focus should be on the ability and capability of each and every person so that people with disability can contribute and thrive in the classroom, workplace and wider community,” Mr Conaghan said.

Launched to mark International Day of People with Disability, the Strategy has been signed and agreed to by all levels of government and was developed in close consultation with the disability community.

Police on the Street: Upon arrival a 33-year-old woman is alleged to have been assaulted, having sustained injuries to her face, hand and shoulder and was conveyed

by Ambulance to hospital.

A 37-year-old man is alleged to have decamped from the scene with the couple's five month old baby.

At about 10:15pm the offender was located with the child near the intersection of Bowra St and Rosedale Ave, Nambucca Heads.

The accused man was arrested and the child conveyed by Ambulance to hospital.

The accused was charged at Kempsey Police Station for the offences of: stalk/intimidate, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault and intentionally choke etc person without consent.

The accused was refused bail by Police and appeared before Kempsey Local Court on 29/11/21 where he was subsequently refused bail to appear before Kempsey Local Court on 6/12/21.

4. On 30/11/21 at about 11:40am Police attended at Nambucca Heads address where a 40-year-old man was issued a Court Attendance Notice for the offence of: use carriage service to menace/harass/offend following enquiries related to a family dispute that had occurred on 27/11/21.

The accused man is to appear before Macksville Local Court on 9/12/21.

5. Police are investigating a motor vehicle accident that occurred on 27/11/21 during the early hours of the morning on Valla Rd, Valla.

It is alleged that a 29-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle and collided with a power pole causing a number of lines to come down onto the roadway.

6. Police are investigating a motor vehicle accident that occurred on 26/11/21 about 7pm on the Pacific Hwy, Macksville.

It is alleged that a 54-year-old couple were travelling south when their vehicle spun out of control, rolled over, before coming to rest back on its wheels.

Due to the impact the windscreen and driver's window were smashed.

The male driver sustained lacerations to his head and neck as well as possible spinal injuries.

Both persons were conveyed to Coffs Harbour Health Campus for treatment.

The male driver was later transferred to John Hunter Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

7. On 1/12/21 Police attended a Macksville address in relation to enquiries regarding a domestic violence incident where a 52-yearold man is alleged to have been assaulted by a 43-year-old woman on 27/11/21.

The accused woman was issued a Court Attendance Notice to appear before Macksville Local Court on 9/12/21.

8. On 28/11/21 at about 12:20pm Police issued a court attendance notice to a 39-year-old woman

following a search in which an amount of cannabis was seized.

The accused woman is to appear before Macksville Local Court on 9/12/21.

9. On 28/11/21 Police arrested a 22-year-old man at Coffs Harbour Health Campus following enquiries related to a family dispute that had occurred earlier the same date where a 32-year-old woman is alleged to have been assaulted at a Nambucca Heads address.

The accused man was charged at Coffs Harbour Police Station and released on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 13/1/22.

10. On 27/11/21 at about 12:45pm Police arrested a 26-yearold man at a Bowraville address for breaching an AVO. The accused man was charged at Macksville Police Station where he was refused bail to appear before Port Macquarie Local Court on 28/11/21.

The accused was subsequently granted bail by the court to appear before Macksville Local Court on 9/12/21.

Mr Jameson believes that the involvement of the whole community in reporting incidents is vitally important.

“If they see it, hear it or witness it they need to call the police.

“If there is nothing in it and it is

a row that has got out of control, we can deal with that.

“And we can process that.

“But if there is violence involved we can prevent it and stop it.

“This can only happen if the community gets behind us.

“Police may canvas neighbours, knock on their doors and say ‘Hey, did you see, did you hear, did you witness anything?’

“I encourage our community to

be part of stopping this violence.

“What we know is that domestic violence can quickly turn into homicide and women across this nation every week are losing their lives to domestic violence.”

Mr Jameson wants everyone to remain safe, and to document incidents only if it is safe for them to do so.

He is asking that people report family and domestic violence to

the police, calling 000 if there is an assault happening, or if you fear that an assault is going to happen.

If possible, Mr Jameson asks community members to document and provide details to police that can provide evidence of the alleged crime.

1. ON 26/11/21 at about 11:40pm Police attended a residence in Nambucca Heads where a sawnoff rifle was seized. Enquiries are continuing.

2. On 2/12/21 Police issued a 41-year-old man with a Court Attendance Notice following a neighbour dispute in Missabotti where a chain on a gate was damaged.

A 46-year-old woman was also arrested and later charged at Macksville Police Station for breaching an AVO and was released on bail.

Both persons are to appear before Macksville Local Court on 20/1/22.

Suicide prevention grants to double, focus on at-risk groups THE Federal Government is increasing suicide prevention grants to organisations across the country to help reduce Australia’s suicide rate towards zero.

Organisations across the Nambucca Valley can now apply for funding through the National Suicide Prevention Leadership and Support Program Grant Opportunity, with $114 million available for national projects that will raise awareness of the impact of suicide and support Australians who are at risk.

Federal Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan said supporting the mental health and wellbeing of Australians is a national priority and something the Federal Government is deeply committed to.

“The last two years have been a particularly difficult time for many people right across Australia and specifically the Mid North Coast,

with the COVID-19 pandemic taking a toll on mental health and wellbeing,” Mr Conaghan said.

“There are many organisations across our region, from Coffs Harbour to Port Macquarie who have stepped up and have been working tirelessly to support those in our community who are struggling.

“I encourage these organisations to apply for this grant opportunity so they can continue to deliver and upscale the important work they do each and every day.”

Specific vulnerable groups – including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, veterans, men, regional communities, and culturally and linguistically diverse communities – have been identified as the primary focus of the Grant Opportunity as these groups have higher rates of suicide than the general population.

Funding will be shared across various activity streams, including: ● Suicide prevention support for at risk populations and communities ($64.5 million). ● Support for lived experience of suicide ($6 million) ● Suicide prevention training ($18 million) ● National leadership in suicide prevention ($4.5 million) ● National leadership in suicide prevention research translation ($3 million) ● National media and communications strategies ($15 million) Mr Conaghan said that suicide is a national tragedy, with 3,139 Australians taking their lives in 2020.

“One life lost to suicide is one too many,” Mr Conaghan said.

“While it was heartening to see a 5.4 per cent reduction in the number of suicides in 2020, suicide remains a significant public health issue in Australia.

“Every suicide death has a devastating impact on families, friends and communities and that’s why we are deeply committed to driving the suicide rate towards zero.”

“We’re particularly interested to see applications that focus on populations and communities that are disproportionately impacted by suicide, such as men and boys and people in regional, rural and remote Australia,” Mr Conaghan continued.

“We know that men are three times more likely than women to take their life, but less likely to access mental health support. We also know that people in rural, regional and remote Australia have a much higher rate of suicide than people in metropolitan Australia.

“The support that will be provided through the National Suicide Prevention Leadership and Support Program will be vitally important in helping to reduce the number of people we lose to suicide each year.”

Through the 2021-22 Budget, the Government is investing a record $2.3 billion in the National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan to deliver landmark reform in mental health support and treatment for Australians in need.

The Plan recognises Australians need a system that acts early to help people before mental health conditions and suicidal distress worsen, and that wholeof-government and whole-ofcommunity changes are needed to deliver preventive, compassionate, and effective care.

The additional investments will take the annual federal health expenditure on mental health and suicide prevention to a historic record of $6.5 billion this year alone.

The National Suicide Prevention Leadership and Support Program is now open. Applications will close on 28 January 2022.

News Of The Area contacted the Nambucca Valley Police to get a definition of hoon driving.

According to Sergeant Anthony Smith, this can include speeding, burnouts and dangerous driving.

“This can mean many things but is usually best described as driving in a manner in which a normal

person wouldn’t drive their car, like driving on the wrong side of the roadway or cutting corners, crossing unbroken separation lines painted on the roadway.

“Noisy cars are a big issue.

“This can range from illegally fitted exhausts or engine components.”

News Of The Area asked Sgt

Smith what the police can do in hoon driving situations.

“There is plenty we can do.

“At present I am investigating an allegation of dangerous driving in one of the residential streets during heavy rain.

“Today, like most days of the week when I am out and about, I

am driving an unmarked car which increases the opportunity to witness driving matters as described.”

This can be done anonymously.

According to Sgt Smith a problem sometimes encountered with this approach is that often the driver has left by the time that the police get there.

Nambucca Heads Police have recently been involved in investigating allegations of dangerous driving, including incidents of late night noise disturbance from noisy cars.

A community member advised News Of The Area that their complaint was investigated by the police, and resulted in the cessation of the problem which had been a long term issue.

The license plate details were recorded by the complainant and passed onto the police.

If any member of the community is experiencing disturbances as a result of dangerous or hoon driving, Sergeant Smith is keen for them to contact the police so that the issue can be investigated.

‘Wildlife’ Exhibition coming to the Phoenix Gallery

By Karen GRIBBIN ART With Heart Nambucca Valley is excited to bring you the ‘Wildlife’ Exhibition at the Phoenix Gallery.

The exhibition was created to support local artists with disabilities, and fundraise for WIRES, Australia’s largest wildlife rescue organisation.

‘Wildlife’ is an artistic collaboration bringing together a wonderful collection of work from very talented members of two distinct artistic groups.

Nelli Gallop is the Art Facilitator for the Exhibition, and her Classy Arts group comprises four of the artists being displayed.

“Susie Peake had for many years promoted an annual art exhibition for her students,” Nelli said.

“Susie now works with Phoenix Nambucca

Valley, and we have worked together on ‘Wildlife’ to give our artists an exhibiting platform.”

Contributing artists are Barbara Mott, Carmel Mott, Kristine Reynolds, Abbey Jae, Alan Mills, Edward Barns and Marnie Russell.

The artists have been working hard all year to bring you this year’s exhibition with 10 percent of all sales going to support WIRES. “Last year a percentage of proceeds went to Fred Hollows Foundation, and this year the artists agreed to support WIRES,” said Nelli.

“There’s been a lot of interest in the artwork available, especially the work on our poster of ‘Matilda’, the cockatoo by Barbara Mott.

“In the spirit of raising funds for good causes, and good people, we have created an online auction to enable people to bid on Matilda,” said Nelli.

Reporting Family and Domestic Violence

INTERNATIONAL Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was on 25 November, which also marked the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

The rate of Domestic and Family Violence experienced in Australia is devastating.

According to Nambucca Valley Detective Chief Inspector Darren Jameson there were 41 incidents investigated in October in the Nambucca Valley, and in November there were 29.

This equates to more

than one domestic violence incident a day.

Mr Jameson spoke with News Of The Area about domestic and family violence.

“As a crime we look at the effects it has on the family environment,” he said.

“There is a cycle of violence that can be perpetuated throughout the family, children learn to commit violence and then it can contribute through generations.

“The key is to break the cycle.

“And we can do that.”

Mr Jameson said that females are the likely victims, with children becoming the

secondary victims.

News Of The Area asked Mr Jameson about those victims that may be reluctant to report or press charges in relation to a domestic violence incident because they don’t feel confident with the process.

Mr Jameson is aware that some victims may be hesitant with police involvement because of previous negative interactions with the police.

Perhaps nothing had been done when they had reached out before, or perhaps they had witnessed a family member attempting to get help with no success.

He is keen for victims to understand that the police are ready and wanting to

help.

“We as police understand that sometimes you are trapped in domestic violence.

“That’s okay, we will still be there to help you whether you feel at that time that you can disclose the extent of the violence that you are suffering or not.

“We will look at everything that is available to us, whether that be independent witnesses, the scene, the version of events, what is recorded on our body-worn cameras.

“Whatever it takes to help you find safety we will utilise.

“That includes referrals to our Safety Action Meeting (SAM).”

A SAM is held for high risk victims, involving a whole of

government response and includes NGOs in the sector.

Mr Jameson said, “It is a holistic approach to finding a pathway for victims to be safe.

“It has a very strong correlation helping women escape violence, but also to stop them from being repeat victims of domestic violence.

“It is a very successful tool,” he said.

The Domestic Violence Evidence in Chief (DVEC) is a digital recording of a victim's evidence given when soon after police arrive.

The DVEC allows the court to see the victim at the moment of the incident, including their emotional state and any injuries.

Mr Jameson encourages

victims to say yes to a DVEC. “It reduces the negative impacts of the course process on the victim, and we usually get very good results from the courts with DVEC.” The victim needs to attend court, but does not have to sit and recite evidence.

Mr Jameson is keen for those experiencing domestic violence to know that the police can help them if they want to stay in their premises, locks can be changed, or if necessary leases can be broken to assist in moving away from an unsafe situation.

Police can provide assistance if stalking occurs.

The clear message coming from the Detective Chief Inspector is that police are ready and able to assist at all times.

FREYA Paton celebrated her 80th birthday on Saturday 11 December with an Artisan’s Exhibition she curated at her home in Farringdon Village, Nambucca Heads.

Freya has tutored workshops in the Macleay, Nambucca and Coffs Harbour regions for many years, and now she can add curator to her accomplishments.

The exhibition was a huge success with the local community taking the opportunity to view artworks for sale, with plenty of red dots to be seen.

Freya opened the exhibition by thanking the exhibiting artists from across the Nambucca Valley, 14 of which came from within Farringdon Village itself.

“Welcome to my home and thank you to those who

with Eugene Martini who has lived at Farringdon Village for the past six years.

Eugene makes two-and three-dimensional works from collected items, using micro plastics, beach flotsam, bones from dead animals, and collectables.

“I like my work to draw attention to the pollution of our oceans, and to give some honour to the dead animals that are killed on the roadside,” said Eugene.

Susie Harvey has been an acrylic abstract painter and tutor for the last 30 years.

“I still teach at the Macksville Youthie once a week,” Susie said.

Joh Riddle has only been living at Farringdon for the last eight weeks.

A first-time exhibitor, Joh usually designs her jewellery by request.

The Nambucca Valley is such an artistic region and there was plenty of creativity on display all day.

Jude Boden, an abstract collage artist, also exhibited on the day.

“I’ve been making collage abstracts now for about five years, and I’m a member of the Gypsy Craft Group, we have lots of fun,” said Jude.

Barbara Huntington had her beautiful fibre works on display.

The energy in the air was electric on the day with plans already in the making for another exhibition next year.

“Next year we’re thinking of having an artist’s walk.”

“Using a few homes in the village to display exhibitions and larger works, so visitors can walk from each exhibition area,” said Freya.”

A NEW veterinary clinic is set to open in Nambucca Heads.

The Blue and White Veterinary Clinic opens its doors today, Friday 10 December, and the community is invited to head along and check out the new premises, meet the team at the clinic and grab a free coffee voucher while you are visiting.

Dr Andre Greyvenstein is the chief vet at the Clinic, and has 24 years veterinarian experience behind him caring for small animals.

“I practice all aspects of caring for animals that are brought for me, and I particularly enjoy surgery, coming from a digital surgical background.

“I want to help animals

but also be able to assist people with caring for their animals, and answering any concerns that they may have.

“I’m always keen to see good outcomes and a healthy prognosis after seeing an animal.”

Dr Greyvenstein hails from South Africa, where he owned his own clinic for 18 years.

He and his family moved to South Australia in 2018 and Coffs Harbour in 2020 where he became a partner with the Blue and White Veterinary Clinic Coffs Harbour Dr Greyvenstein is excited about the new service being offered in Nambucca, and he and his team are keen to become involved with the community here.

Local tradespeople have been heavily involved in the

remake of the building.

The rooms are spacious and open, newly laid out with a clean and airy feel about them.

The team working alongside Dr Greyvenstein at the clinic are Vet Nurse Trish Mead and receptionist Rebecca Whaley.

The clinic has two consulting rooms, a surgery, and two soundproof kennel rooms, with the cats and dogs being provided with separate facilities.

WHERE do you catch fish in the Nambucca valley?

Locals all have their favourite spots and they do not always want to share such information.

So keep your eyes peeled and you just might see where the good size fish are getting caught.

Spotted last week at Deep Creek, Valla Beach was Greg Artlett landing a brim and Michael Ferris a nice flathead, both within fifteen minutes of each other and both using lures not bait.

They chose to stand in the water and fish the edge of the sand bank.

At the Valla Lions Reserve there are many options.

Apart from wading in the water you can fish from the bank, off the bridge or venture over the sand dunes to the beach.

The weather has been variable so prepare accordingly whether it be sun protection or rain gear and get in early before the holiday makers arrive and compete with you.

A BIG weekend had been planned with the monthly medal and spoon and the play off for the overall annual medal and spoon winners on Saturday and on Sunday Macksville's Open Day. Until rain and hail put a stop to the Robyn Marsay and Craig Marsay Glass and Aluminium sponsored event on Saturday the early starters were able to get their game in untroubled.

The event brings hundreds of surfers to the Nambucca Valley for the three days of competition.

“Competitors from all around the country are sick of lockdowns and travel restrictions preventing them from surfing competitively and I expect the 36th

Loggerheads Malibu Classic to be the most hotly contested ever,” added Barry.

The Loggerheads Malibu Club is open to all ages and abilities, will start their new season in February 2022 and are always looking for new members to join the fun.

After 20 years, I still don't like my partner coming in to talk to me when I am using the bathroom.

I feel as though this is a sacred time and space and even though we've seen each other in every imaginable situation, privacy is still warranted.

Litigation to resolve ambiguity in will BRIAN was a wealthy man who owned real estate, shares, cash and an extensive classic car collection.

At the time of his death, Brian was married to Julie and had three children to his first wife who had died in a car accident 25 years ago.

Brian’s will left his real estate and ‘personal effects’ to Julie.

His children were left his family heirlooms, photographs, personal papers and the “residue” of Brian’s estate.

Brian’s children were appointed as the executors of his will and after obtaining a grant of probate, distributed the shares, cars and cash to themselves.

Julie believed she was entitled to Brian’s shares, cash and car collection on the basis that they were ‘personal effects’ and commenced action in the Supreme Court in what is known as a ‘construction suit’.

The children defend the action, arguing that the shares, cash and classic cars are not ‘personal effects’ and that they should form part of the residue of the estate, to which they are entitled.

There was no evidence of Brian’s actual intentions.

The Court stated that the term ‘personal effects’ comprised something with which Brian had some ‘personal connection’ or was ‘accustomed to use and enjoy personally’.

Additionally, the Court stated that the term ‘effects’ should only include physical or ‘tangible’ items.

The Court ultimately ruled that the reference in Brian’s will to ‘personal effects’ included the classic car collection, to which Julie was entitled and the children were entitled to the shares and cash.

When providing your will instructions to your solicitor, it is important that careful consideration is given to items of value.

Your solicitor should then clearly draft your will to avoid ambiguity so that your intentions are realised without resort to litigation.

What did the Candidates stand for?

DEAR News Of The Area,

THANK you to Karin Matthews for her summary of what some of the Nambucca Valley candidates were standing for in the current election (‘Meet the Candidates’, Karin Matthews, Opinions and Letters, p16, News Of The Area, November 26 Edition).

As I am absent from the area I had a lot of difficulty finding out what the candidates were about from online searching.

There seemed to be a lack of information online and the submission made to the Electoral Commission by some candidates is surprising in its absence of information.

I expected in this time of massive social media influence and reach, that candidates would have a public information page that

summarises their position on the important circumstances of our time, like climate change, loss of habitat for native wildlife, potential over development as well as the bread and butter issues like roads, whether dirt or bitumen, and services that satisfy community needs like affordable housing, safe places to live and work.

I understand that in the past Local Government has been the poor relation of the three levels of government but that time is long gone.

Local Government can bring back the ‘humanity' of government with policies and procedures, plans and actions that support the actual living conditions of the people of the region.

Candidates should understand this and frankly I have not seen evidence that many do.

DUE to the COVID-19 pandemic, my wife and I

have not been able to see our young grandsons in the flesh for the past two years.

Many families find themselves in the same situation, and we all wish that it were not so.

Yet we can console ourselves with the thought that our predicament is but temporary,

AFTER my parents retired to Nambucca Heads in 1984, I visited regularly and a holiday here was never complete without a trip or two to LePac so that my young sons could spend their pocket money at Les and Pam's wonderful shop.

Since moving here ourselves 14 years ago, our five grandchildren are following in the footsteps of their dads and love to visit LePac. So many mesmerising and affordable items for their few dollars!

So hard to choose!

So exciting to consult with Pam and, until recently, Les, about how far their money would stretch!

Now LePac is about to close, and I want to thank Pam for the endless pleasure that her shop has given to two generations of my family.

The main street of Nambucca won't be the same without this iconic place and we will continue to miss the legendary friendliness of its owners.

Happy retirement, Pam, and thank you for the joy you have spread over the years.

Redirection of Funds DEAR News Of The Area,

I REFER to the article by Marlene Griffin in last week’s paper (‘Reduced to a Pile of Rubble’, Marlene Griffin, Opinion and Letters, p16, 3 December Edition, News Of The Area).

I find it an unbelievable fact that Council has totally ignored the local community’s feedback on the proposed Library Update Project submissions.

I believe the community along with my feedback has not been listened to in any way, during the proposal stage.

I totally agree with Marlene's opinion, and find her arguments still exist during the construction stage.

As progress on the construction stage proceeds, it is becoming clear that the project was not approved by the local community.

The project has major issues, such as: - Unnecessary loss of revenue from

surrounding businesses, which is a silent cost, not added to the already overall budget blowout of the project.

- The disruption to a perfectly functioning and fund producing NCAC Hall.

- The total disruption to the traffic, parking and pedestrians in that whole corner area of the business community.

The comment Marlene made on 3 December was, “The funding for the Nambucca Library ReDevelopment Project is coming from Nambucca Valley Council and State and Federal Grants one of which is designated to be directed to ‘Community Roads and Infrastructure’.”

This redirection of funding, added to the redirection of over 50% of the $5m Bushfire Recovery funding (mentioned in Brooke Lewis’ News Of The Area article, ‘Council’s Bushfire Relief fund’, on Friday 23 July 21), as part of the funds being redirected to the beautification of the river’s foreshores, makes it questionable.

Is it one of those all-in-one arrangements where there is a shower, vanity unit and toilet? Or is it a small, dank room with only a toilet and sink, and he feels the need to invade the only time you have to yourself?

There are many moments of intimacy couples can share without the need to chat while one of you is perched with your pants around your ankles.

It is an unnecessary visual (and sometimes olfactory) assault that, once experienced, can't be wiped, (unintentional pun, which is always a delightful thing to experience).

If you don't have a lock on your door, I would suggest you get one.

This is not only helpful for intrusive partners, but also clueless children, curious cats, domineering dogs, and nosy neighbours.

If, however, he/she is just coming in to talk to you while you are showering, it just means there's still a bit of spice left in your marriage and that is cause for celebration, rather than something to complain about.

As I wrote to News Of The Area at the time, ‘It was great to see the Council obtaining the $5 Mill Bushfire relief in our local paper today, but reading on, it became a great example of False Pretences, when you obtain a financial gain, and use it for financial benefits for other purposes.

'Beautification of the foreshore is not essential damage repair of other council interests/infrastructure.’

The allocation of funds given to Council on previous examples along with the library issue, begs the question, is the Council distributing funds in a legal and community interest way?

In this project we have another example of redirecting road funding and Bushfire Recovery funds from the original purpose.

In the interest of the local community and business transparency, the past practice of redirecting funding appears to be bordering on misappropriation of funding.

longboard surfing season with their annual awards presentation at Scotts Head.

Now in its 37th year, the Club has faced one of its most challenging seasons due to the impact of COVID restrictions on the ability to hold monthly competitions.

Nonetheless they were able to get enough surfing done to establish rankings and hand out a swag of awards at season's end.

The Loggerheads hit the water before the formalities of the annual awards with an Old Mal Rally where surfers competed on longboards manufactured in the 1960’s.

These classic boards are much heavier and less manoeuvrable than their modern descendants which made for some interesting viewing from the beach.

The Old Mal Rally was won by veteran surfer Mark Fuller who exhibited some impressive skills in surf conditions that had become very challenging by finals time.

For 2021 the coveted Club Champion Award went to Jamie Lawson who has been consistently strong through the year with Mark Fuller close behind in second place.

Other award winners were: Juniors - 1st Sol Cunningham, 2nd Lilly Lawson Ladies - 1st Holly Williams, 2nd Lin Sullivan Over 60’s - 1st Mark Fuller, 2nd Geoff Gardener Open 9’ - 1st Jamie Lawson, 2nd Mick Birtles
