In Karuah the locals have started a food drive.

“Doing It For Our Farmers” is because of our amazing office staff who came up with the idea,” School Teacher Cherie Edwards from Karuah Primary said.

“They’ve seen firsthand the devastating effects it’s having on drought affected families and communities.”

What began as a trickle is turning into a flood of donations but in this case it’s more the merrier.

destroyed the iconic ‘Rock’ at North Arm Cove last week.

Locals and tourists have been saddened and shocked by the loss of the popular roadhouse that stood like a giant orange beacon for fuel and food on the Pacific Highway.

The blaze broke out just after 7pm last Tuesday night, the Tea Gardens Fire Brigade unit the first of 18 crews to arrive at the site.

Within an hour, the entire complex had been destroyed, but luckily no one was injured.

Cherie Edwards said, “The donations will be delivered to a drop off point in Tamworth where they will be sent out in care packages to families in the surrounding area and region.”

Captain of the Pindimar/Tea Gardens Rural Fire Brigade told News Of The Area, “We were the fourth truck at the scene, it was chaotic.”

“It was a very hot fire and our job was to keep the gas bottles cool so they didn’t explode.”

“All the agencies worked very well together and we were lucky it wasn’t a windy night as the fire could quite easily have spread to the bush.”

It took five hours to bring the fire under control, but it was still smouldering the following day.

Bulahdelah is also stepping up to the plate with a ‘One For the Farmers’ big day out on Sunday 9 September.

“We would have been working there for 7 years, tomorrow (Aug 2),” Jan told News Of The Area.

“We cleaned seven days a week from 6.15 am for all those years.”

“We didn’t hear about it until we were on our way out there to work on the morning

and a Christmas Gift drive.

Money raised will all go to helping our farmers in need.

There have been claims that an electrical fault may have caused the blaze, but official investigations could take months to complete.

Gut Dredging Begins

IT’S taken some hard core lobbying, but dredging has finally started along the Myall River area known as the ‘Gut’ which hugs the Tea Gardens foreshore.

“Since 2014, boat owners who have their vessels moored in the ‘Gut’ have reported that they could only access their vessels at the top half of the tide due to sand intrusion,” Gordon Grainger from the Myall River Action Group told News Of The Area.

“They had been unsuccessful in having the area dredged, and asked the Myall River Action Group for assistance in lobbying the various Government Agencies for approval.”

The Gut was last dredged in 1961.

“We are very pleased to report that this outcome has been achieved and would like to take this opportunity to thank MidCoast Council

which has assumed the project management and Crown Lands for providing financial assistance.”

Mr Grainger added, “Without their help this outcome would not have happened.”

Construction of the sand transfer system to replenish sand onto Jimmy’s Beach has also begun.

Over the coming months MidCoast Council’s contractors will install a pipeline from the Winda Woppa stockpile through to Jimmy’s Beach and commission a pump station.

Council has committed to replenishing the stockpile from the ‘Shortcut’.

Once completed, the system will be capable of transferring 10,000 cubic metres of sand over a two week period.

MidCoast Council has committed to the program for the next 20 years.

New Reel for Rural Fire

By Margie TIERNEY AS we head into another bushfire season, our local Rural Fire Service (RFS) has received a welcome donation to make their lives a little easier.

Thanks to a grant from the

Holiday Coast Credit Union, the Pindimar/Tea Gardens RFS has been able to install an electric hose reel on one of its trucks.

“It’s going to save firefighter fatigue,” Noel Quince from the RFS said.

“You can rewind 30 to 40

metres of hose in a few minutes instead of winding it manually.

The automatic reel winder cost $3,500, money from the Holiday Credit Union was happy to fund as part of its annual grant program.

“Every year the Holiday

Coast Credit Union puts on a community grant program where groups like the fire service can apply for a grant and this year the RFS along with the Surf Club were successful,” Manager, Julie Hammond said.

“A lot of the State has now started their fire season a month early, 1 August instead of September,” Noel Quince said.

The next back burn on the RFS agenda is trying to get the bush surrounding Jimmy’s Beach done sooner rather than later.

“It’s a high priority; we’re just waiting for everything to fall in place, volunteers,the right weather conditions, it all needs to be coordinated,” Noel said.

Local RFS Captain Helmut Panhuber is calling on the community to take care if they’re doing a burn.

“People need to notify MidCoast RFS on 1300 643 262 if they’re going to do a burn as well as their neighbours and be very aware of weather conditions and wind forecasts.”

The Dinner Dance also provided the opportunity for the Show Society to announce their pledge of $1,000 to the upcoming ‘One

for the Farmers’ community fundraising day.

“We want to help out the best that we can,” Show Society President Gary Gooch said.

“We hope to donate more at the community event and we will additionally give the proceeds from our chocolate cake raffle at the show.”

Another highlight of the evening was the lively fundraising auction, with generous bids bringing in over $2,700 which will be donated back to local organisations.

“It’s always encouraging to see the vast range of innovative projects these small amounts of money can help fund, and the positive difference they can make.”

Applications for the 2018/19 Donations Program open on Friday 10 August, and a detailed set of criteria will be used to assess each project. This includes demonstrating support for one or more of

the objectives, strategies and actions outlined in MidCoast Council’s recently adopted Community Strategic Plan, and providing a comprehensive project budget that delivers solid value for money.

“We are looking to distribute donations in a fair and equitable way, and to provide support for projects that meet a genuine community need,” Lyndie added.

Sporting Groups encouraged to Apply SPORTING groups across the region are being encouraged to apply for funding under a new National $29.7million program being established by the Federal Coalition Government aimed at upgrading community sport infrastructure.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the Community Sport Infrastructure Grant Program would enable sport and

community organisations to apply for grants up to $500,000 to upgrade sporting infrastructure in 2018-19.

“Local sporting groups should consider projects that would help build participation in physical activity, community partnerships and inclusiveness,” Dr Gillespie said.

“Sporting facilities are vital for inspiring physical activity and health, but also for building community spirit and pride.”

“I’d like to take this

opportunity to encourage sport and community groups to collaborate and think about projects that could enhance our facilities in our local community. Even the smallest of facility projects can have a big impact on boosting local business, economy, health and social cohesiveness.

“Improving lighting, playing surfaces and accessibility for different ages and genders are just some of the ways sporting facilities can be made safer and more appealing.”

WELCOME news for boaties in the Tea Gardens area, as work is scheduled to commence this month to install a second pontoon on Marine Drive.

Known for its great fishing and spectacular Myall River backdrop, Tea Gardens is a haven for local boating enthusiasts and hordes of visitors to the area, and will soon be home to a new pontoon.

Works will be undertaken from 20 August to prepare for the installation of the new structure, expected to be in place early October weather permitting. Carried out by contractors under MidCoast Council supervision, the initial phase through to midSeptember includes piling and ancillary works.

Signage will be in place, with minor disruption for pedestrians around the worksite, opposite Tillermans Café on Marine Drive.

“Our region is well known for a diverse range of recreational activities based around our waterways,” said Rhett Pattison, MidCoast Council’s Manager, Projects and Engineering.

“Residents in Tea Gardens and the many tourists who visit during our warmer months will make extensive use of the new facility, which we’re aiming to have opened to coincide with the October school holidays”.

Installation of the new pontoon will be undertaken from mid-September through to the first week of October.

As part of the project a shelter will be constructed on the existing public wharf, also located on Marine Drive, to provide protection against the elements for users of this popular boat launching facility. Use of the wharf will not be impacted, but minor disruptions for pedestrian traffic can be expected.

“While we’ve worked with our contractors to minimise inconvenience, locals should remain alert to construction crews and equipment in the vicinity,” Rhett added.

This project is part of MidCoast Council’s commitment to improving infrastructure across the region, and is funded by the NSW ‘Boating Now’ program, an initiative of Roads and Maritime Services.

THEY were such a hit last year, that the Maitland Salvation Army Band has been invited back to Tea Gardens for another concert at the Baptist Church.

Joining the band, armed with his trombone, will be one of the local organisers of the concert, Alan Calcutt.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Alan said.

“There will be some arrangements of

traditional hymn settings, some modern church music, some secular band music, marches and of course tambourines.”

The band, which is made up of 25 members, visited Tea Gardens last year for the first time, attracting 200 people to the concert.

This year Alan is hoping to top that number.

The concert is being held at the Baptist Church on Myall Street, Tea Gardens at 2.30 pm on Sunday 12 August.

Barrington: We need equality Dear News Of The Area, BARRINGTON Tops, without doubt, is a wonderful regional attribute, but so are all the other tourist destinations in Midcoast LGA. It is very important that any new Tourism Destination name is of equal benefit to all destinations within LGA. Including the place name ‘Barrington’, provides preferential exposure, paid for by all Midcoast Ratepayers.

It focuses tourist attention on only one small area -760sq klm; within the entire

region which is 10,050sq klm.

Do a google search on ‘Barrington’ and you will get the full unfair picture. Pages and pages of Barrington area ‘facilities’.

The area already has extensive online exposure, and due to its proximity additional promotion from websites of The Hunter.

Imagine the outcry if eg.’Forster Coast’ had been proposed/approved! Barrington area already have extensive online exposure, & due to its proximity - additional promotion from websites of The Hunter.

This issue is about Midcoast Council making a decision to ensure the name they approve ensures all destinations are viewed equally.

Mr AB, Salt Ash Dear Mr AB, What are you talking about when you say ‘a bit’ of weight? Do you mean that your jeans are tight, or do you have to get dressed horizontally so you can squeeze into your tracky-dacks?

There’s a world of difference between these two stages and only you will know how far you’ve let yourself go.

There are a few positives to your dilemma, so I’m going to try to make you feel a bit better.

Firstly, you are not alone. Most people put on weight over winter, unless they are those annoying types who jog roadside and wave when you’re on your way to the shop to buy a family block of chocolate. If you like to feel part of the community, it is probably a good idea to commiserate with fellow weight gainers, rather than join that patronising group of body mass index sustainers. Killjoys, the lot of them.

Secondly, your weight gain goes back to times of food scarcity when long winters meant a store of fat came in quite handy. Think of gophers. Now there’s an animal that knows a thing or two about storing weight over winter.

Who could argue with a gopher? They are adorable. They must be doing something right, because they are under no threat of extinction, apart from a couple of obscure gophers like the big pocket gopher who must store contraband items in his big pockets that he goes and snorts in dodgy places with his fellow big pocket gopher mates to keep his weight down (I digress, Mr AB).

Finally, in the cold winter months, it is quite nice to cuddle up to someone who is carrying an extra kilo or two. I mean, at this time of year would you rather be snuggling up to washboard abs and protruding hip bones or a stomach as soft as a feather and down pillow?

I hope this eases your mind. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Mattara competition is coming up Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

By The JAFFA 1 August: The dry balmy weather continued making ideal bowling conditions for the 52 players participating in the Nominated Triples today.

Both green were in use with the grass playing superfast.

Three teams won both games to at least get an honourable mention but it was the team of Tom “silver fox” Parkinson, Graeme Watkins and Noel Jackson who took the money with an amazing score of 59 points.

Makes the runners-up on 57 and 55 respectively look rather ordinary!

The Myall Bistro voucher was won by Col Saillard.

The Club welcomed Dennis Longman who was a visitor from Umina and welcomed back Bill Thrift and Henry Dallas, great to see them both back on the greens.

The Club was represented during the week in the annual Mattara Festival by Ken Devlin

and Scott Beaumont, both competing in the restricted singles competition.

On the first day of the event, Scott just missed by 2 shots on a count back to progress but Ken moved into day 2 and just failed by one game to progress further.

Well done both players!

The Club will be further represented by Col Saillard and Ken Devlin when they compete in the restricted Pairs of the Mattara next Monday.

3 August: The beautiful weather continued but only 10 players competed today in the Friday Open Pairs.

The one game of Pairs was decided by one shot on the last end and the one game of Triples was similarly close.

More players needed!

5 August: Another fabulous winter day for bowls attracting 24 players to Sunday Bowls.

The synthetic green hosted 4 rinks of Triples with all players enjoying a great game.

By Sonja EVANS Karuah Roos Rugby League THIS week the Karuah Roos had their Indigenous Round on Saturday at home against Paterson River. Game Day Sponsor was Russ’s Fresh Bake.

It was a very fast and hard game against 2nd on the ladder Paterson, Karuah is 7th on the ladder.

River kicked off and it was on. Big hits were coming thick and fast.

Paterson were the first to score in the first 3 minutes of the game 4/0.

The Roos countered 5minutes later with Mitch Turvey crossing for his first try for the Roos to equal the score at 4 all.

The Big Hitter in the first half for the Ross were Jack Croese, Ben Feeney, Justin Anderson, Matt Croese, Dwayne Fleming, Aaron Benn, Mitch Turvey, Daniel Evans, Tim Johnson, Trent Saunders, Kane Chishomle and Adam Crampton.

Clash for Cup COMPETITIVE spirit was alive and kicking at the annual Chris Hoare Cup Rugby League clash between Bulahdelah Central School and Gloucester High last week.

Spurred on by a convincing 54-0 win by the Bulahdelah junior boys captained by Angus Devon, the open team came out fiery and determined to claim back the coveted Cup lost to Gloucester in 2017.

Taking to the field at the Jack Ireland Sporting Complex, Gloucester were quick out of the blocks and busted over the line within minutes of the kickoff to score the first points of the match.

Bulahdelah dug deep and put up a strong fight but were overwhelmed by the brute strength of the Gloucester attack.

With injuries to key players in the second half leaving Bulahdelah short on the field, Gloucester continually

smashed over the line and easily claimed the Cup. Despite the 56-0 defeat, Captain Caleb Grimshaw praised the efforts of his team.

“Jreaytaine Davis and Kobi Watt had good all-round games and 2nd rower Matt Barry defended well,” he said.

Bulahdelah Coach Bob McCann said the team gave their all.

“They tried hard, but the Gloucester side were bigger, stronger and faster, and outplayed us in every aspect of the game,” he said.

“Going into next year’s competition we will be focusing on some intensive coaching including some offseason training to help bring the Cup back.”

The annual contest celebrates the sporting talents of former Bulahdelah Central School student Chris Hoare whose life was tragically taken in 1996.

Chris’s parents Jenny and Stephen said they were very proud to see the high level of sportsmanship displayed on
