Community Arvo for Blue Light

A TEAM of runners from across the globe arrived in Bulahdelah last week, bringing with them a message of peace.

The local leg of their 3,500-kilometre journey from Brisbane to Adelaide commenced in Forster.

MidCoast Council Administrator John Turner accepted the torch of peace on behalf of residents, before it was passed onto the Bulahdelah community.

Celebrating its 30th Anniversary in Australia, Team Captain, Amalend Edelsten, said the purpose of the run is to promote peace and inspire a brighter future.

“The whole idea is that peace starts with each individual spreading it from individual to individual,” he said.

“We feel that we are like couriers, carrying the good

wishes and hope for peace from each community and carrying it to the next.”

Arriving in Bulahdelah after a stop at The Grandis, the torch was passed to Carol Poniris, who was celebrating her 12th Birthday.

“By holding the torch, people can make a wish and help in the mission of achieving world peace,” Amalend said.

“The children are the ones who will carry that message forward into the future.”

The Peace Run was founded by Sri Chimmoy and now takes place in more than 150 countries.

Amalend said the runners do not seek to raise money or promote any agendas, they simply aim to create goodwill.

The recommendations approved by Mr Turner include applying for a four-year permanent rate increase beginning with 11 percent (inclusive of a 6 percent Environmental Levy and the rate peg) in 2017/2018.

This will be followed by 5 percent (inclusive of rate peg) for three years up until 2021.

If approved, the rate increase will allow Council to address the annual $5 million funding shortfall for roads and bridges.

According to Council, if the funding gap is not addressed, the current

Council’s SRV scenario was placed on public exhibition and 32 submissions were received, including one with an online petition attached with 267 petitioners’ names.

Meeting agenda attachments on Council’s website state the submissions “were not supportive of lodgement of a Special Rate Variation application to IPART”.

“Areas of common concern raised in the submissions were the perceived lack of community engagement, non-democratic decision-making process, affordability

and varying levels of average rates across the area,” the documents state.

Speaking with Media last week, Interim General Manager, Glenn Handford, said there had been considerable community consultation in relation to the SRV, but at the end of the day, communities need to look after themselves.

“You can’t go with your begging bowl all the time to the State Government saying give us more money, help us out,” Mr Handford said.

“Our business plan has been to increase our rate income so that we can be self-sustaining, so we can address that underfunding and depreciation.”

Mr Handford said a rate increase was the best way forward.

“This gives us a better bargaining position to go back to the Government and say can you help us on this journey, as opposed to just giving us handouts,” he stated.

IPART has placed Council’s SRV application on public exhibition and will make a determination following the exhibition period.

Residents can still have a say on the proposed rate increase by making a submission to IPART. Submissions close on 30 June.

A COMMUNITY fun afternoon will be held this weekend to officially launch the Bulahdelah Blue Light Program.

The celebration is an initiative of the Bulahdelah Blue Light Committee and and will be held at the School of Arts Hall on Saturday 10 June commencing at 1pm.

A free sausage sizzle will be provided and drinks and lolly bags will be available for a very small cost.

Senior Constable Ash Ray said the ‘Bulahdelah Blue Light Arvo’ will be funded by the local committee, in partnership with Raymond Terrace PCYC, as a show of thanks for the community supporting the program.

“We want to show the local community, especially the youth, that we are here for them, and are more than happy to provide a service they will enjoy and can be a part of,” Ash said.

Big Boost For Bulahdelah

Former Great Lakes Council gave approval for the construction of 61 caravan sites, five cabins, amenities building, function hall and

A Development Application was recently lodged with MidCoast Council to expand the initial concept, to include an additional 99 caravan sites, two amenity buildings and a communal kitchen.

“We have been working with MidCoast Council to make sure this development meets all the current requirements,” site owner Gary Ekert said.

“We are looking forward to commencing construction as soon as approval is granted.”

“The development will open up over one kilometre of riverfront land to visitors through sprawling walkways and enhanced natural landscaping, linking it back to the township.”

Speaking with News Of The Area, Gary said the project will also create many new jobs during construction which will “flow into permanent and part time employment for locals”.

Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce Vice-President, Kevin Carter, said the tourist park development is one of the largest investments in Bulahdelah since the Bypass.

“It’s good to see new investment like this in the town as it will lead to the

diversity of options and complement existing venues,” he said.

“Private investments, such as the tourist park, show a commitment to the growth of Bulahdelah.”

The Development Application for the project can be viewed on Midcoast Council’s webpage, or in person at Council’s Forster Office and the Bulahdelah Rural Transaction Centre.

Since they took over the pub just over a month ago, new owners Emily and Ben Hanson have hit the ground running.

There are no days off for this couple, with the pair eager to bring change and new life to the iconic hotel on Marine Drive.

They’ve designed a new logo and branding.

“We wanted something simple and fresh that, first and foremost, honoured the hotel’s history and the surrounding Myall River area,”

Emily Hanson told News Of The Area.

“From the day we arrived, we’ve been mesmerised by the abundance of pelicans and felt they needed to be showcased in our logo as a tribute and to demonstrate the personality of the hotel we plan to cultivate.”

Emily said, “The depiction of the sun rising or setting on the river is a sight we’re privileged to see every day.”

There’s also a new chef and a new menu although some things will stay the same.

Generous Giving

THE Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) and the Community Activity Park Committee are the grateful recipients of generous donations from Bulahdelah Hunting Club.

The VRA funds have been further boosted, with a donation from the Bulahdelah Lions Club.

“We picked the VRA because we feel that they are a forgotten mob in town and they desperately need the funding for their equipment,” Hunting Club Treasurer Greg Russell said.

“They are short on everything,” Lions President Roger Dixon told News Of The

Area.

“It’s a community group that needs community support, otherwise we may lose such a valuable service,” he said.

VRA President, Kevin Johnston, said the money will be used to purchase much needed life-saving equipment.

“Some of our equipment is very expensive, like the ‘Jaws of Life’ which costs upwards of $10,000,” he said.

“The VRA members are all volunteers and are on call 24/7.”

Mr Johnston said they attend all types of emergencies including motor vehicle accidents and search and rescues.

The Hunting Club also donated to the Activity Park to assist with providing facilities for young people.

“We feel that there needs to be the appropriate

infrastructure in town to keep the youth occupied,” Mr Russell said.

The Activity Park Committee, consisting of representatives from

MIDCOAST Water proudly sponsors a number of key regional events each year to support the communities it serves.

Alongside their sponsorship of events such as the MidCoast Science and Engineering

Challenge, the Taree and District Eisteddfod, Tastefest and the Lakeside Festival, MidCoast Water also runs an annual community sponsorship program to assist local groups and organisations.

Applications are

now open for this highly competitive program, which provides limited funds for community-based projects or events.

MidCoast Water encourages applications from organisations with projects which will

provide lasting benefit to the community, or for organisations needing seed funding for new initiatives that have the potential for ongoing benefit.

ONCE again Point Piper resident Mr Phillip Dong Fang Lee has raised the ire of many of his neighbours in Bundabah, Pindimar and North Arm Cove with the application released in late May of plans for a quarry 600m from the edge of the Bundabah village.

The Fame Cove site of around 400ha is currently the subject of a stop work order by Midcoast Council and legal action has been taken by Mr Lee’s company

seeking to prevent Office of Environment and Heritage inspectors going onto the property to see what works have been undertaken.

This follows fines of in excess of $200,000 imposed for tree clearing and pollution by local and state government departments.

The scars on what was once described as “a truly beautiful piece of land. It has Aboriginal and considerable heritage significance for New South Wales” are clearly visible from the waters of North Arm Cove and Fame

Cove.

Residents concerned about the noise, dust and the impact on threatened flora and fauna should read the DA and lodge an objection with Council no later than 26 June 2017.

Bushfire Fundraiser in Tea Gardens

By Margie TIERNEY THE Myall Community has once again answered the call to help others with a charity bowls day for the victims of the Sir Ivan bushfire earlier this year.

The town of Dunedoo may be 350 kilometres west as the crow flies, but it could be around the corner when it comes to the generosity of the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest locals.

Last Friday, dozens of people took to the greens of the Tea Gardens Bowling Club to raise funds for the CWA appeal and Blazeaid.

“Before the bowls day even started the local community had donated $400,” organiser Pip Sullivan told News Of The Area.

‘Blazeaid’ was born out of the Black Saturday fires in Victoria in 2009.

The not-for-profit organisation is made up of volunteers from all over Australia, who help communities get back on their feet.

One of their major areas is supplying the manpower to replace fencing, something the Dunedoo region needs desperately.

“Most of them are Grey Nomads,” Dunedoo local Warren Bull said.

“We’ve had up to 150, at the moment there’s about 80 still there principally engaged in putting up new fencing.”

“People have come from all over to help,” Sue Stoddart said.

“Some of them are in tents, vans and caravans.”

“Virtually every organisation within the community including charitable organisations, are on the roster to feed the volunteers dinner every night.”

The Dunedoo community is hopeful the Blazeaid volunteers will stay until Christmas.

At the end of Friday’s Fun Day of Bowls in Tea Gardens, $1,427 was raised.

Another $2,220 came from a raffle.

All in all, a great effort.

“Special thanks must go to Ross Barry, Graham Kelly, Keith Smith and Club Manager Warren Gooley.”

With the recent announcement that America is pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement, is it really worth bothering with the tiny difference I am making to the environment by using eco-friendly bags, composting and implementing water-saving techniques?

Mr JK, Salamander Bay Dear Mr JK, LET’S turn this into an anecdote.

There was once a little ant and he decided that he was going to try to convert a capitalist tarantula that was still kicking, but getting older and more unreasonable by the day.

The tarantula looked very scary with his furry head and legs, and his darting eyes and what appeared to be a spray tan.

The ant decided that he was too weak, in the face of such strength and madness, and instead, in despair, he gave up on what he was trying to achieve and he died a miserable death.

His baby ants didn’t get dinner because the mother ant was in such a deep state of melancholy that she forgot to hunt and gather, and they died as well. The end.

No, not the end, that was a very bad ending. Let’s try again.

The ant reconvened with his other ant friends and family members and, with their strength and resolve, wearing cute little six-legged ant-style hemp flares and revolutionary-red beanies with holes for their antennas, they surrounded the tarantula and dragged him into their den and tried some reverse psychology on him until he became an Environmental Warrior and he started yelling, “Make the Planet Great Again” (with a French accent that made all the female ants swoon).

The tarantula felt so good about himself that he allowed the ants to crawl onto his back and he carried them towards the horizon and they didn’t fall off the edge, because the tarantula now knew that the earth wasn’t flat or able to be sold off to the highest bidder (insert bright lights and uplifting Disney music here).

Don’t give up on your environment, Mr JK, or it will most certainly give up on you.

BRIAN Jones recently treated U3A members to a catalogue of very interesting, amusing and sometimes unbelievable instances of historical inaccuracies in film.

Brian emphasised how movies present history can have a very powerful effect on how people understand the past; although no one ever said that movies were obligated to reflect fact, some filmmakers have taken liberties under the

guise of allegory and artistic freedom, slanderously misrepresenting individuals, countries and entire civilisations.

Brian’s presentation took us from the Roman Empire to the 20th century with the odd humorous excursion to show how the movie industry unwittingly and deliberately changed our lives and moulded our thoughts and attitudes on subjects such as Relationships, Religion, Race, Slavery, Sin and Sex.

Some of the movies were beautifully filmed and were gripping accounts of history, but the amount of poetic licence taken in many instances was staggering.

Unfortunately, time was not on our side and Brian did not manage to show all he had hoped.

There are hopes that this historical journey can be continued with another session in the future.

Winter Warnings Heat Up

By Daniel SAHYOUN WITH a chill in the air and temperatures continuing to fall, local fire brigade members urge residents to keep their homes fire safe this winter.

According to NSW Fire and Rescue, around 30 percent of house fires in NSW each year occur in winter months.

“There are many house fires in winter as people try and warm up their homes,” Bulahdelah RFS member Rod Paar said.

“There’s a number of common sense things people can do to stay safe such as checking smoke alarms and making sure they are working, cleaning chimneys and not drying clothes on top of heaters.”

Rod said clothes dryers have sparked many house fires in the past, so it’s important to clean the lint filter after every use.

Statistics show that over 350 house fires are started by electrical faults in NSW each year.

“Incorrect use of power boards, such as overloading them, can cause a fire,” RFS member Meagan Terry said.

NSW Fire and Rescue recommend using power boards with built-in safety switches and regularly checking that all plugs are firmly plugged in.

As families huddle together indoors to stay warm, Meagan said to make sure heaters and electric blankets are also thoroughly checked and cleaned before use.

This year, the members of the ‘Galleries in the Garden’ group have attracted a high profile judge to review and award the works of art on display.

“Kim is highly respected in regional NSW for her contribution to the Gallery’s significant growth over the last decade and a half,” Colleen said.

A PUBLIC meeting is being held at the North Arm Cove Community Hall later this month to discuss the plans for a new quarry at Fame Cove.

MidCoast Council has received a development application from Tattersall Lander Pty Ltd. MidCoast Council’s Project Manager, Wayne Burgess said, “Council has requested additional details to accompany the application such as ecological impacts, a soil and water management plan and an Aboriginal Due Diligence Assessment.”

“These reports are part of the exhibition for the quarry

proposal, which is on public exhibition until 4.30pm on Monday 26 June.”

“The application is currently being assessed

by Council staff and any submissions received during the exhibition period will be considered prior to any decision on the application,” Mr Burgess added.

Len Yearsley from the North Arm Cove Residents Association said, “We are seriously concerned that the adjoining peaceful villages of Bundabah, North Arm Cove and Pindimar will suffer from the noise, dust and vibration associated with industrial high impact machinery.

“All this, together with

a crushing plant and heavy truck movements on a daily basis, would outrage communities for kilometres around.”

“We see this development could well result in a serious loss of amenity for our village.”

The DA can be viewed online on the MidCoast Council’s website, or at the Forster or Tea Gardens offices and written submissions can be made on the proposal to Council.”

The local community meeting is being held on Saturday 17 June at 10am.

“WELCOME to the presentation night,” Social Club President Jim McDonald stated Saturday night, 3 June 2017.

The evening was a very memorable night for all, with the sumptuous dinner, live music and great company all going late into the evening.

The twilight golf, nine holes every Thursday afternoon during daylight savings was a real thrill for all club members all season.

The champion golfer for 2016 / 2017 season was Pat Henry, winning with a very close margin of three points from Glenn Burgess, the runner-up champion.

Another very close competition, the best ten games, proved you only need one point to win.

Jed Malone won the best

ten games, one point ahead from Frank Murphy.

The most improved golfer for 2016 / 2017 season was Cory Bates, the porn trophy award went to Ian Ingram.

The social darts division proved consistent weekly results will prove a true darts club champion.

Trevor Peirson was the present season’s club champion.

The club champion runner up and the highest peg out was Darren Rapley.

The most improved dart player from the men’s division was Kumar John Harvey.

Three dart players scored the perfect score of 180 points from a possible 180 points.

They were Lyn Peirson, Trevor Peirson and Paul Bennett.

The ladies dart players division champion for 2016/2017 was Lyn Peirson.

A very competitive evening of darts then ensued with the mixed doubles team

winners being Geoff Smith and Paul Bennett.

The mixed doubles runner-up team was Trevor Peirson and Darren Rapley.

The ladies’ highest score competition winner was Lyn Peirson achieving 100 great darting points.

TUESDAY 30 May, social bowls as usual for the lady bowlers.

On Rink 5 play was a game of Fours, 2 bowls each, 21 ends to be played.

A fairly even matched game, but the winners here were Carol Bywater, Robyn Webster, Lily Smith and Wendy Brand 22 v Sheril Johnson, Jill McBride, Carol Hayden and Olive McKeown 16.

Good to see Carol back playing bowls.

On Rinks 1 - 4, 18 ends, 3 bowls triples was the format for play.

Rink 1, Julie Kennedy, Lesley Kibble and Lynn Green demolished Ingrid Luck, Dawn Jones and Karen McPhie 30 v 8.

On Rink 2, a great fight back by Dorothy Thompson, Christine Fossey and Kayelene Pearson, their team were down by 9 shots on the 15th end, scored 5 shots on the 16th end and 3 shots on

the 18th end.

Final result a loss by 2 points, winners here were Dorothy Dallas, Anne Mackenzie and Dale Winter.

Rink 3 was an evenly matched game with Bette Saillard, Karen Green and Maynie Roberts 16 v Francis Betar, Deyonne Page and Loretta Baker 15.

Winners all the way on Rink 4 Bev Dunn, Kay Wahlstedt and Liz Kelly 27 defeating Kerry Faber, Pam Gilchrist and Nola Jackson 8.

The winners with the highest margin were Julie Kennedy, Lesley Kibble and Lynne Green.

Thursday 1 June: Round 1 of the Club Championship Pairs Competition, some competitors had a lucky draw and moved through to Round 2.

Vicki and Lorraine held a lead of 6 on the 12th end, by the 17th end their lead was 1.

With only one end left to be played, there could be a winner or there could be a draw.

The Game Day Sponsor was Dark Side Concreting.

Cardiff kicked off. The Roos had the dropsies and were finding it hard to hold the ball.

The Roos’ Darren Weatherall was the first to score with Sam Creose converting to open the score with 6/0.

Great metres were made by Zac Cobb, Jordan Cobb, Kane Chisholme, Tim Higgenbottom, Luke Perry, Jack Croese, Justin Anderson, Harley Ridgeway, Ben Feeney, Jake Blanch, Matt O’Connor, Dylan Foley and Darren Weatherall.

The Roos’ Kane Chisholme was in and Sam converted 12/0.

Big hitters were Kane Chisholme, Jack Croese,

The second half saw the Roos’ Zac Cobb over the line and Sam converting 18/0.

IT was raining cats and dogs but the pigs were still able to fly at the Tea Gardens Country Club last weekend.

The inaugural “Pig Day Out’ Family Fun Day drew a huge crowd despite the wet weather.

There were six races contested by seven pigs.

The contenders each had a different coloured racing jacket, their mission to be first past the post after

running and jumping through the hay bale course.

Like many Australians, who’ll bet on two flies walking up a wall, there was no shortage of punters or ways to place a bet.

There were raffles and auctions with the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club, the major beneficiary.

The Master of Pig Ceremonies and Auctioneer went by the name of “AKA Jimmy Rasher” his side kick Jeffery Bacon (his real name).

“I was actually calling crab races in Coffs Harbour for four years, when I was scouted by this organisation,” Mr Rasher told News Of The Area.

“I love it, I get to travel all over the country.”

“We go from Cairns to Tasmania and all parts west,” Jimmy said.

Country Club Manager Warren Gooley was also very happy with the turnout.

“It’s definitely going to be an annual event.”

As for the piglets, they race until they are three months.

For the seven little piggies who ran on Saturday, it was their last race.

They’ve now been retired to greener pastures back on the farm.

The day raised $3,000 for the Surf Club.

“Babe” would be impressed.
