Five-year-old Josiah Reitsma from Bulahdelah said he was well-prepared for his first day, having had a little help from the big man in red.

“I put a school uniform on my Christmas list and Santa brought it for me,” he said.

“I was so excited, I tried it on lots of times.”

Although there were a few first-day jitters around the region, Tea Gardens student Raven Clarke was bursting with excitement after her first day of Kindy.

Since their great escape, only 3,000 fish have been recaptured, leaving 17,000 predatory yellowtail kingfish now hunting in the Marine Park waters off Port Stephens and beyond.

Since the project began 18 months ago, Authorities from the joint NSW Government and Tasmania-based Huon Aquaculture project, have maintained that the ‘fortress pens’ could withstand ‘high energy, exposed sites, storm swells and gale force winds’.

Spokesman for Huon said, “The Company is well prepared for such an event and has initiated its Escapee Recapture Protocol to recapture fish.”

The plan involved luring the fish back with more pellets.

Conservation groups and local tourism operators have been against the five year project

since its inception, claiming it would threaten the pristine marine park’s delicate ecosystem.

“Imagine thousands of Yellowtail Kingfish escaping from aquaculture pen(s) in the recent storm and the NSW Government assuring us they will be caught and returned to pen(s),” local Conservationist Ronnie Wilson said.

Port Stephens MP Kate Washington said it was not appropriate for the fish-farm operators to police themselves.

“There should be independent oversight of the whole trial and an independent investigation into the recent failure,” Ms Washington said, “With the Department of Primary Industries and Huon both heavily invested in this project, it’s hard to know where the truth lies.”

While Huon called on local fisherman to stay away from the area, the lure was just too great.

Surprise Party for Brian Theme of course for the day was red and green with lots Welsh flags and red dragons with many of the guests dressing in either red or green.

Members of the Ukulele group and choirs joined in singing a couple of Welsh songs for the entertainment and there was a large cake complete with red dragon on to finish the day.

In November 2017 the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) ordered a car dealership to pay for repairs to a secondhand car despite the dealer warranty period being over.

The purchaser had bought the vehicle for private purposes and fell within the legal definition of “consumer”. He was therefore able to rely on the guarantees in the Australian Consumer Law when the car began to cause problems. There are several such guarantees but the relevant one in this case was for the vehicle to be of “acceptable quality”.

The tribunal was satisfied that, despite the car being 7 years old and having travelled 262,000 km at the time of purchase, a problem with the brakes did amount to a defect with the vehicle.

If the “defect” was found to be “major” the purchaser could reject the goods and claim a full refund. As it turned out, the tribunal did not accept that the defect was “major” and therefore the decision was limited to repair work at the expense of the dealership.

This case highlights the fact consumers have rights when purchasing goods that may extend beyond the warranties they are told about by a supplier: Darren Cornish v CSJ Motor Group Pty Ltd t/as Western Wholesale Commercials [2017] NSWCATCD 95.

It is also worth noting that NSW Fair Trading run a free dispute resolution service for motor vehicle related matters.

A WELL known resident of Hawks Nest turned 80 this week and a large surprise party of 42 people, family and friends attended a luncheon at the Tea Gardens Hotel to help him celebrate.

Brian Jones is well known in the musical fraternity of the area belonging to two choirs and Old Bones Ukulele group, a presenter of programmes at U3A and is well known for bringing many plays and musicals to this area for local entertainment.

Communications infrastructure FEDERAL Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie has made representations to Telstra, the National Broadband Network and Communications Minister Mitch Fifield about the need for further upgrades to communications infrastructure around Tea Gardens.

Dr Gillespie recently met with residents at Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens to discuss the issues relating

to mobile phone reception and data speeds, through the existing telecommunications network.

“The level of information the residents have provided to me is quite good. Its detailed and provides me with the specifics I need to take it up with the relevant Telcos,” Dr Gillespie said.

“It would appear that during peak periods data speeds are incredibly slow

due to what some describe as bandwidth crunch which is caused by too many people using the network,” Dr Gillespie said.

“To me, that means more capacity is required and that is why I am taking it up with Telstra, NBNCo and the Minister, to find out what plans are currently in place to improve the capacity of the communications infrastructure in and around Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest.

If there isn’t, then it’s going to have to be put on the agenda,” he added.

Queen’s Baton Arrives Jennefer Trott said she was honoured to have carried the Queen’s Baton through Forster on its way to the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

“It was an incredible and amazing experience,” she said.

The proud 22-year-old from Wang Wauk was one of 16 MidCoast residents who took part in the relay when it passed through the region last Friday.

Thousands of people lined the streets and waved, honked horns and cheered as the Baton Bearers journeyed through the streets of Tuncurry, then across Wallis Lake by boat before finishing at Forster Ocean Baths.

Jennefer said it was inspiring to see the MidCoast communities come together and support the special event.

“It was such a great day and I had so much support from everyone,” she said.

Jennefer has also been named as an Ambassador for the Games, and will be heading to the Gold Coast in April to represent the entire MidCoast community.

“I get the opportunity to promote the MidCoast region to tourists,” she said.

“It is an awesome opportunity and I am definitely looking forward to it.”

This interest has continued and he is a Life Member of the Stroud Historical Society. He regularly takes guided bus tours through the historical sites of the Lower North Coast and may often be found with a busload of tourists at Tahlee.

Weathering the Weather

THE start of 2018 has certainly seen some weather extremes hit the Myall Coast.

From gale force winds, to seas so rough they closed beaches and almost swamped Winda Woppa, to temperatures in the high 30’s and last weekend much needed heavy rainfall.

All this as the fallout continues from the extreme conditions which washed much of the sand from Jimmy’s Beach.

Fortunately, nature spared Winda Woppa again last week.

“We appear to have

One of the reasons it was impractical to take the sand from the stockpile was the plight of the Little Terns still nesting in the area. ‘’We still have considerable exposure to any significant east coast lows until at least October, when we hope the long-awaited sand transfer system is in place and the risk will reduce slightly, until a permanent solution can be found,” Ken Garrard said.

“At the moment we are all breathing a sigh of relief on Winda Woppa and thinking that we got away with it this time, but we are wondering how long our luck will hold.”

Dear Jasminda, My husband thinks that the cost of driving our bottles and cans to the new recycling facility at will negate any funds we earn. What do you think?

I encountered this joyful experience last week when I used the facility for the first time. It was important for me to load the entire family in the car and reminisce about the good old days when we crushed cans and received pocket money for them. I spoke fondly about raiding garbage bins and designing can crushers with my friends. The backseat crew seemed unimpressed.

When we rounded the first corner of our journey, the recycling tubs in the boot tipped over, and the combined stench of stale beer, chardonnay and ginger ale filled the car.

Still, I persevered, arriving at the car park, only to realise, in the 35-degree heat, that there were no parks. I ended up on the other side of the centre, and we walked with our bins of trash to the recycling facility.

There we met a lovely man who said, “The bloody thing is full again. You’ll have to come back later, love.”

We carried our cans back to the car and did some shopping (not too much, as there was no space in the boot to put it).

When we were leaving, there was a new crowd of people and the conveyor belts were operational again (only two of them, the others had malfunctioned).

We found another park and stood in the queue, only realising at that point that there were separate machines for glass and plastics (of course ours were jumbled together). Wine bottles were also prohibited (that cut our recyclables in half).

Finally, after another 20 minutes, we had our time in the sun. First the cans and then the plastic bottles (but not the ones we had crushed – the conveyor belt didn’t accept them).

With about 20 cans to go, the machine inexplicably rejected us. I told the kids to get a refund from Woolies, as my desire to donate was overruled. The kids returned with a handful of coins. They looked dejected. They wanted Maccas. We bought two drinks (they wanted ice-cream, but the machine was broken). We received them in non-recyclable containers. I started singing ‘isn’t it ironic’ and the excursion was over.

Hey, Mrs CK, don’t listen to your husband. Do what you think is best.

Pesky Myna Birds

THE Indian or Common Myna is an introduced bird species that has unfortunately called many parts of Australia home.

Myall Coast and Port Stephens have certainly felt the brunt of this pest.

However, local residents are fighting back in the hope of bringing back the native birds and mammals that have been driven out by the Myna invasion.

The Port Stephens Indian Myna Action Group has declared war on the unwanted neighbour that many of us cringe at.

Carla Kleber created the Group and has enlisted the

help of some heavy hitting locals in her fight.

“We lived at our residence for seven years and never had any issues with Indian Mynas until last year,” Ms Kleber told News Of The Area.

“Now, they’ve moved in in a big way.”

Ms Kleber has purchased two Myna traps and has had some success catching eleven birds thus far, but as many residents would know, the tranquil peace and quiet doesn’t stay around for long.

“Native birds move back in when they’re gone but I’m sad to say this doesn’t last long as they move straight back in.”

Ms Kleber is not alone in

the fight, but the cost of traps and the process of disposing of the birds is an obstacle for many people.

Well, it used to be.

The Raymond Terrace Men’s Shed has put their hand up and has pledged to make Myna traps for only $70 each.

A bargain considering many traps online sell for between $100 to $200 or more.

That helps with trapping the birds, but what about getting rid of them?

For those residents feeling squeamish about having to humanely dispose of the birds, there’s a local business offering a very generous solution.

MORE than 300 anglers are expected to descend onto the banks of the Myall River this weekend for the annual Bulahdelah Bass Bash.

The popular catch and release fishing competition is a family-oriented event, with prizes up for grabs for reeling in the biggest bass, the mightiest mullet and many other species.

The weekend of fun and fishing will kick off with the traditional Bass Bash Ball on Friday 9 February from 8pm at Bulahdelah Bowling Club.

Live music from Secret Society will ensure the party rocks well into the night, providing the perfect opportunity to welcome visiting anglers to the town.

Bulahdelah Fishing Club President Darren Carrall said conditions are looking good for the weekend event.

“The water is a bit saltier than usual for this time of year because of the extended

“This ties in with our recent release of fingerlings, as the more bass you have in the river, the less carp you will have.”

Darren said registrations for the competition open at 3pm on Friday at the riverbank weigh-in station and extend throughout the weekend.

The event, now in its 26th year, will conclude with a presentation at the Bowling Club at 1pm on Sunday 11 February.

Final is next Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

31 JANUARY Very overcast skies welcomed the 48 bowlers ready to play today.

After a particularly heavy downpour, play commenced but had to be abandoned after only three ends.

Next Wednesday looks good!

2 February Fabulous Five dollar Friday Open Pairs was played today in great weather.

Twenty players participated in some great bowls.

Ray Prigg and Frank Zumbo will be bragging all week that they ran out the winners today from Bette Saillard and Dennis

Wilberforce, Bill Moon and Frank Dunn.

3 February The Quarter Finals of the Club Minor Singles was played today with some really good bowls played.

In the Gary Wynne, David Perry match Gary trailed for most of the game mounting a comeback at the 14th end to close within 6 shots at the 24th.

A dropped 4 shortly after put paid to his chances with David wrapping it up, 31-23.

Ross Barry and Stewart Sturrock had a real tussle with Stewart grabbing the lead after 26 ends.

There the challenge ended with Ross powering away to run away with the match, 31-22.

The match-up between two exceptional draw

bowlers, Neil ”silky” Kibble and Col Saillard, was much anticipated.

As much as he tried, Col could not get himself into the game for the first 10 ends and after 14, he trailed Neil 5-18.

The lead was far too much with Neil the eventual winner, 31-21.

In the remaining game, Bruce Everitt was contained in his scoring to singles by Ken Devlin, who in contrast, was picking up multiples.

To his credit, Bruce won 14 of the 30 ends played but Ken went on to win, 31-19.

4 February The showers cleared this morning to allow the semifinal of the Club Minor Singles Championship to be played.

The Ken Devlin, Ross Barry game appeared to be a one-way affair where, after 18 ends played, Ross had established a commanding 23-8 lead.

It all changed at the 19th when Ken mounted a real challenge by accumulating 13 shot over 5 ends to get back within striking distance.

There the challenge petered out with Ross the eventual winner 31-24.

By Lyn PEIRSON Hawks Nest Golf Club Social Club LAST week we had 32 dart players with a number of visitors and holiday makers joining in for a fun night of darts. The eventual winners were James Ureta and Greg and the runners up were Mark Thomas and William Livingstone. The ladies high score was 121 by Lyn Peirson and the men’s high score was 140 by Trevor Peirson.

THE fish are on the bite with plenty of big snapper being caught off Port Stephens.

Snapper is not all that is out there at the moment, with schools of taylor and bonito being reported in the area, as well.

Brad Horn of Pacific Blue Charters told News Of The Area, “There have been plenty of good sized snapper and trag out there over the peak holiday season, and there are plenty of fish still out there.

for the marlin season and that’s really exciting fishing.”

For those that don’t have a boat there is good shore fishing to be had around Port Stephens as well.

The break wall at Nelson Bay is always popular as is the jetty at Little Beach.

There is bream, flathead and whiting all ready to be caught inside the bay.

Recreational fishers do need a fishing licence to fish in NSW unless they are participating in a fishing charter.

There are several charter

operators in the Myall region inshore and offshore fishing experiences.

“If you aren’t a regular fisher taking a charter can be a great way of being at the right place to bag a catch.”

“Heath Power (peg leg) , is one happy customer on Dr Hook, in fact he was so happy with the first charter he came back for a second one week apart, and is already booked to go out again, it’s no wonder he was happy catching this thumper of a snapper,” he said.
