Exceptional Service by Meals on Wheels Volunteers

“VERY challenging but the team of management volunteers and staff have stepped up.”

This is how Emilie Tseronis describes what local Meals on Wheels volunteers are doing in response to the demands posed

by COVID-19 in an area with the oldest demographic in Australia.

The demands have been significant.

Daily, the number of main meals has increased from 150 often up to 260.

Weekly, the overall number has increased to around 500, with around 250 desserts The number of days worked has increased from three to five per week.

There are now around 80 volunteers working to plan, cook and deliver nutritious meals.

Around half of the volunteers work in the kitchen which was built in 1984 and in need of an upgrade.

The kitchen, adjacent to Hawks Nest Library, was never designed to deliver over 20,000 meals which is the total cooked last year.

The kitchen volunteers work in shifts of five to help maintain social distancing, uphold food safety procedures, and practice good hand hygiene.

Emilie Tseronis, whose dedication to Meals on Wheels spans 12 years, helps run this exceptional volunteer service.

She told News Of The Area, “Our service is very familiar to the community and relies on volunteers and teamwork to help aged and disabled people stay in and be happy at

home with great home cooked meals.”

The menu is updated fortnightly but some favorites, like the Roast Lamb with all the trimmings and baked sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce and custard, remain available.

The volunteer delivery drivers do much more than drop off meals to Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens, Bulahdelah, Pindimar, Karuah and North Arm Cove.

Every Monday and Wednesday they also provide clients much needed social contact and check their wellbeing.

If concerned, they will contact the client’s family, carer, and/or support services.

Peter Roberts explained, “Volunteers are very welcome, subject to a NSW Police clearance check and the completion of work health and safety training.”

Problems at Tea Gardens Singing Bridge Your paper needs MidCoast Council ATTENTION will keep you updated FROM Page 1

accident which will surely happen.

It’s time to conduct repairs to badly rusting handrail sections and it’s time to spruce the bridge railing which is in bad need of a paint job.

These ‘it’s time’ issues have been presented to Council over the past 4 years through our advisory groups and have received nodding agreement, however no action has been forthcoming.

The Bridge was built in the early 1970’s, funded by Mineral Deposits to obviate the lengthy delays in transporting rutile to the Hexham processing facility. It had inherent advantages in joining the towns of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest to vehicular and pedestrian traffic and the community proudly christened it the “Singing Bridge” due to the tune it plays in the westerly winds.

At the time of construction, it was considered adequate for community needs and proved the case for many years.

Those years have moved forward and we are now almost 50 years on. In that time the community has grown, transportation has changed and maintenance is needed and ‘it’s time’ the Authorities addressed the problems.

As an aging population, the use of motorised wheelchair transport has multiplied and the bridge provides independence for those reaching both sides of the river.

PROBLEM: the footpaths on both sides of the bridge are too narrow to pass. Should users meet going in opposite ways, they dismount and use the roadway, or one backs off.

SOLUTION: widen the bridge (won’t happen) or use logic and have one -way footpath traffic. The logic wins, but has hit a snag in that the easiest, cheapest and safest exit in moving from Hawks Nest to Tea Gardens is to install a path under the bridge on Tea Gardens side. The snag is the path would need to meet 100 - year flood level. Bureaucracy at its extreme?

When the bridge was built, the only regular bike riders were kids going to and from school.

Council wisely placed signage advising those bike users to dismount and cross by footpath.

PROBLEM: Times have changed as have bike riders and the bikes themselves. The current Coronavirus has seen a probable tripling of bike users crossing the bridge and has caused friction between the riders and some members of the driving fraternity. Recent events have resulted in abuse, near accidents and no doubt will culminate in serious injury, or worse. Bicycle riders are equally entitled to use the bridge carriageway and must be accepted by the car drivers.

SOLUTION: Ban bikes from the carriageway and insist they dismount (won’t happen). Or

These issues involve a Traffic Committee which is composed of members from Police, local members of State Parliament and RMS. Council acts as Secretary and must carry out the decision of the Committee, unless it appeals that decision.

We have been waiting far too long for a result which will improve safety and it is appropriate to advise the Committee ‘It’s time’ the community asks Council to take the lead in resolving these matters and if necessary, take the matter to appeal. Safety is paramount and the procrastination is simply not good enough.

The Progress Association (PA), the community and our local Councillor are tired of being ignored.

Bridge maintenance is another issue needing to be addressed. There are sections of the railing badly corroded and needing replacement. Again, the matter has been brought before Council over some time, with no result.

The railing is in bad need of a new paint

job. It presents badly to both visitors and residents and should be addressed at the time of repair. Volunteers through the PA offered to do the work, however, again ended in the “too hard basket” This weeks’ installation of the 12 no standing signs for pedestrians on the bridge footpath (see picture) has prompted the need to bring these matters to community attention and request Council to address these “It’s time” as a matter of urgency.

It exemplifies that Council recognises the fact that the pathway is narrow and that immediate action is required to ensure public safety.

The Executor of a Will is charged with the task of carrying out the terms of the Will.

Often, the Executor must make decisions. For example, if a property is to be sold, will the sale be by auction or private treaty?

Should the property be improved or maintenance carried out before the sale or sold “as is”?

Should it be offered to each of the beneficiaries to purchase before it is placed on the open market?

At all times, the Executor is bound to act in the best interests of the beneficiaries.

However, sometimes the interests of one beneficiary are different to the interests of another beneficiary.

Where the whole estate is to pass to the children of the Willmaker, it is often tempting for the Willmaker to nominate one or more of the children as Executors. The reasoning is that he or she is responsible and will act fairly. However,

this is not always the case.

If the Executor wants to purchase one of the assets in the estate (from the estate) then the Executor is placed in a very difficult position as it can be perceived that the Executor is preferring his or her interests to those of the other beneficiaries. Further, if another beneficiary also wants that same asset, then it is likely that the Executor must step back. Therefore the executor would be prejudiced as a result of being appointed to the role. An alternative is for the Willmaker to appoint an independent person as Executor being a person who can act in the best interests of the beneficiaries and who has no emotional interest in the decisions to be made. An independent executor is worth considering.

And with many Mums isolated, home schooling, working as essential, or otherwise, Sunday 10 May while under different circumstances, is an opportunity to connect, celebrate and support local businesses.

Mother’s Day, first held in 1908 in America, is a day to appreciate Mums for their care and work.

Flowers are traditionally in high demand, especially for home delivery, with a surge predicted following an initial downturn at the beginning of COVID-19.

Janice MacMahon shared, “I have sent flowers to my Mum as she lives in a Nursing Home in Sydney and no visitors allowed. We have ordered the seafood platter from the Boatshed. We are supporting local businesses and keeping up social distancing”.

Local restaurants have also seen a surge in early takeaway orders from breakfast to seafood platters.

Local retailers are also excited about the day.

The local nursery, Woody’s has a new and wonderful range of flowers and gifts, as does Alana’s Flowers and Gifts in Hawks Nest.

If there is no medical reason, you can sometimes put it down to intoxication.

Both men and women seem to snore if they’ve been on the turps, so there’s a good reason to pace yourself.

I’ve found a gentle nudge helps, or, if that doesn’t work, a soft pillow. Just place it gently over his face and say a few encouraging words. You know, something like, ‘If you don’t stop snoring, for the love of God, I’m going to suffocate you . . . ‘ No, no, sorry, Mrs WK, I don’t know what came over me then. Do not do that.

No matter how sleep deprived you are, violence is never the answer. That advice could get us both in a lot of trouble. There is more than a little irony in the fact he gets annoyed that you have disturbed his sleep. A surreptitious recording of his nasal symphony might wake him up to just how frustrating it is to endure the noise.

How about noise cancelling headphones?

Earplugs? The spare room? There are many options available. I sincerely hope things improve soon.

First of all, you should check that it is not a medical issue. My husband used to snore like a chainsaw, but he had a deviated septum (that’s an issue with the nose, not some weird perversion). Once he had surgery, it improved dramatically.

My husband snores. He snores every night, but he snores less when he is on his side. The problem is, when I wake him to tell him to roll on his side, he gets annoyed that I have woken him up. What is the solution?

This is one of those dilemmas that creates incredible angst. If left unchecked it can bubble over into outright hostility that extends into waking hours. No one likes to have their sleep disrupted and snoring is a particularly irritating issue.

BULAHDELAH residents are participating in online photo competitions, capturing stunning local images and posting them for group judgement, or “Likes”, to win.

This week’s winning image is of Legge’s Camp taken

by Robyn Richards.

The site of this spectacular reflection shot is named after Harry Walter Legge, who in the early 1900s legged it 170km along the coast line, starting from Tuggerah to finally stop and camp in this very spot.

Harry fell in love with the area’s beauty and later sailed back in his open boat called Odin and set up camp.

His family later settled at Bombah Point and their descendants remain in the area today.

Harry’s wife, Emily, described the spot as a “lovely position with water on three sides of the Point”, reflected in Robyn’s winning photo.

The competitions are organised by Dee Lovelite through the online Bulahdelah Notice Board on Facebook which has 1,596 members to date.

COVID-19 Update and social constraints begin gradual easing Week Eight of social distancing and there are some hopeful signs that compliance is working.

WEEK Eight of social distancing and there are some hopeful signs that compliance is working.

Nationally there are 6,801 cases, 95 deaths and 5,817 people have recovered.

Over the past week, around 13 new cases are reported each day, mostly in NSW. Good news is there has been a steady and sustained decline in cases across Australia following a peak in March.

From an NSW Health perspective, there are currently 3,035 cases with 44 lives lost (as at 2 May).

For comparison, last week News Of The Area

(NOTA) reported there were 3,002 cases (up 33 this week).

Tragically, there are two new cases at Newmarch House in Sydney West, increasing the total to 61, including 24 staff and 37 residents.

Fourteen residents have sadly passed away.

In Hunter New England, the number of cases is at 277, down from 278 last week.

This is the first time NOTA has reported a decline with the rate steadied and no new cases in the last 24 hours.

As reported last week, COVIDSafe, the new mobile phone application is up and running.

Widespread use of the application will help to ease social restrictions.

When and how restrictions are further eased depends on three tests set by the Australian Government National Cabinet.

First is increased testing, second is greater contact tracing, and the third is the ability of the health sector to contain surges.

COVIDSafe supports the second, providing fast and effective contact tracing.

In addition, the NSW Government has started easing some social restrictions.

Motor Club continues to hand out cheques

THE Motorfest 2020 event at Hawks Nest not only made it just prior to the social restrictions in place, but it was also hailed as a very successful year according to Juergen Seil, .

Mr Siel, President of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club told News Of The Area the beneficiaries each received $2500.

“With good sponsorship contribution, Raffle ticket selling and gate takings the

Club was able to donate $2500 each to our three local beneficiaries, Tea Gardens / Pindimar Rural Fire Service, Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club, and the Local Clinic Bus.” “Thank you to News Of The Area for the good cooperation with MOTORFEST 2020. It all contributed to a successful outcome,” he said.

When the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club was formed the constitution called

for staging an annual event with the aim of promoting tourism and supporting local organisations, that do not get funding from Government.

Mr Seil said, “This tradition has now been followed for eighteen years with great success.”

By Julie MCKIMM KYARA Darcy started the year with great success winning Championships at Eisteddfods across the Hunter Region.

Kyara, aged 14, was awarded the 14/U Tap Championship and Most Promising Award at the Shine Bright Eisteddfod held in February.

In March she won the 14/U Tap Championship, was Runner Up in the Jazz Championship, Runner Up for the Senior Scholarship and was Awarded the Youth Rising Star Award at the Encore Eisteddfod at Cardiff.

This was an outstanding achievement and her teachers are extremely proud of her achievements.

She was also chosen to be an Ambassador for the eisteddfod and won a free modelling shoot as a result.

Kyara hopes to continue to dance in many eisteddfods in the future and at school and has ambition to compete at Nationals in Queensland in January 2021.

After completing year 12 she hopes to study a degree or diploma in dance and see where that takes her.

She enjoys assisting teaching and has been running some of the Studios Online lessons with the assistance of her mother – Principal of Dance ‘n Dazzle Studio – Corynne Darcy.

Unfortunately due to COVID19 at the moment dance lessons are unable to operate as usual but students have been able to access dance classes online in the safety of their own homes.
