Carols in the Park ‘TIS the season to don your festive hat and warm up your carolling voice for a jolly night of Christmas fun at Bulahdelah Carols in the Park.

A free sausage sizzle and face painting will be on offer at the family friendly event which will be held in Wade Park on Saturday 16 December from 5pm.

News Of The Area has heard that Santa Claus will be arriving on a trusty fire truck at 7pm, escorted by members of Bulahdelah Rural Fire Brigade.

To help spread the festive cheer, Santa encourages children to dress in colourful Christmas attire.

Bulahdelah’s Rui Coelho said the Community Carols are a great way to share the joy of Christmas.

“Events like this bring the whole town together and are great for lifting community spirit,” he said.

Throughout the evening, Sydney chamber choir Aurora Choralis will perform under the stars and lead the community singalongs.

BULAHDELAH paramedic Wayne Cook has celebrated 40 years of service with NSW Ambulance and said he has no plans to give it up just yet.

“I still love the job and I still love helping people,” Wayne told News Of The Area.

The dedicated paramedic started his career in his hometown of Kempsey in 1977 before transferring to Bulahdelah 38 years ago.

“Once I finished school, I looked at my choices and I was thinking either police, ambulance

or fire brigade back then,” he said.

“My family knew the local ambos in Kempsey and suggested I do some honorary work to see if I liked it, and here I am 40 years later.”

Wayne has experienced just about every emergency imaginable throughout his long and rewarding career including delivering a baby.

He said he enjoys the diversity of the job, but the unpredictable hours have meant time away from his wife Maxine and children Chris and Kelsey.

“We work shifts

during the day and do callouts after hours, it has been hard on the kids,” Wayne said.

“There were times when Chris tried to stop me from going out to jobs at night.”

Wayne recalls leaving for a callout when Kelsey was four years old, a situation he now considers “quite funny”.

“She dialled 000 and told the operator her dad forgot to say goodbye,” Wayne said.

“A policewoman arrived at the house and asked Maxine if everything was alright because there had been a call for an ambulance.”

Wayne has enjoyed working with many dedicated staff over the years, including Glen, Bob and Dave, and said the comradery is a great part of the job.

“I miss working with these amazing fellows, the town lost a great team when that came to an end,” he said.

“My present colleagues are also a great team and I certainly enjoy working with them.”

Although Wayne has served the community around the clock for decades, he said his family deserves the praise.

“I could not have done the work I did, especially on O’Sullivans Gap without Maxine’s support,” he said.

“Families learn to live around the edges of the job, they are the ones that need the accolades.”

Wayne believes there are only three other paramedics from his induction class who are still in the service.

Clarence Town Police Station has already closed and Port Stephens Local Area Command is merging with Maitland.

“We want our police stations to remain open and we want them manned, in fact we need more police not less,” Kate Washington said.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Laksa addressed the gathering and tried to reassure the crowd, “It will be

But MidCoast Councillor Len Roberts questioned police

resources and whether there would be adequate police cover over the upcoming Christmas holiday period.

Inspector Laksa admitted it would be a struggle to increase police numbers over the holiday season.

MidCoast Councillor Karen Hutchinson proposed moving Tea

Gardens and Stroud into the Manning River/Great Lakes area, a suggestion that received a negative response from the crowd.

Ms Hutchinson’s fear is centred around response times and distance.

“This new local command will take Tea Gardens and Stroud police officers over to Maitland,” Councillor Hutchison told

When asked whether she thought the Tea Gardens Police Station with its two officers Dave Coyle and Rob Wylie will remain as is, “They didn’t give a definite ‘Yes,’ Karen Hutchison added, “The buildings will be there but will they be manned?”

The NSW Police Association is also concerned about the Government’s intentions around satellite stations.

It’s worth noting that under the ‘Re-Engineering’ of the force there have been major changes in Sydney.

The research also shows that over the past 20 years, the number of divorces granted peaked in 2001 at 55,330. In 2016 the number of divorces decreased by 16%, to 46,604 and that those who were divorcing were staying married longer than in 1996.

At the time of writing this article, the Senate had just passed the Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Bill 2017 (“the Bill”) with 43 members in favour and 12 against.

The Bill proposes to amend the definition of marriage in the Marriage Act 1961 (Cth) to provide that marriage is between two people. The Bill will now go before the House of Representatives for a final vote.

THE evolution of the Karuah business continued last month with even more businesses opening.

Old Mates Bakery and Cafe opened its doors and the Karuah Pharmacy celebrated its official “Grand Opening”.

Karuah Progress Association stalwart Dave Benson said “since the bypass went in, our town continues to flourish”.

The Karuah Pharmacy held a “Gala” Opening ceremony on the 28th of November.

Owner and Head Pharmacist Wilson Soh cut a ribbon and a cake, while live music was heard up and down the Main Street.

Janelle Henderson, a Karuah local reported that “over 200 friends, and customers of the pharmacy attended and all had good things to say about Wilson and his team and the service they provide to Karuah.

Old Mates Bakery has also recently opened with fresh bread, cakes and light meals with great coffee either inside or at an outside table.

As well as adding colour to the Main Street, it gives another dining option to the those visiting town. Dave Austin, a part time worker at the Bakery said, “Come in, get your fresh bread daily and try our coffee or cakes, you will be pleasantly surprised”.

The local Anglican Op Shop

has recommenced business in its newly renovated and extended premises this month. The newly enlarged and modernised church hall will be blessed and officially opened on 31 December as a last act of 2017.

Church leader Cliff Johnson said, “Anyone wishing to attend the blessing would be made welcome at the morning church service and blessing at the service and morning tea on the morning on New Year’s Eve.” Members of the local progress association are hoping for a 2018 which will see even more businesses and activity within Karuah as the area continues to evolve as the “Pearl of Port Stephens”.

“We had at least a couple of hundred volunteers over the show weekend and the get together is a way of thanking them for their contribution,” President Gary Gooch said.

The volunteers assisted with everything from setting up and staffing the pavilions, stewarding, recording in the ring and mustering cattle.

Others helped in the canteen, show office and on the gates.

Art Brown was one of the many volunteers, giving a large amount of his time to run the beef cattle section.

“I have been volunteering with the show for six years, so I am only a novice,” he said.

“It is all about getting involved and contributing to the community.”

the gate takings are donated to volunteer groups.

Gary said the Lions Club, Volunteer Rescue Association and Bulahdelah Fishing Club will receive donations this year.

In addition, a massive $1,600 was raised from the Men’s Chocolate Cake Auction with a large slice of the proceeds heading to the Men’s Shed.

“A cake made by John Stidolph raised $600 alone, it was his family who bought the cake back, they have been terrific supporters of the show,” Gary said.

“Next year we hope to upsize it a bit more and get more blokes baking.”

Gary said the Show Society extends their gratitude to everyone who contributed to this year’s successful event.

Cash for Cans Bulahdelah Bowling Club could become the first local redemption point for the NSW Government’s new Container Deposit Scheme.

BULAHDELAH Bowling Club could become the first local redemption point for the NSW Government’s new Container Deposit Scheme.

Club Secretary Al Freihaut said all communities should have access to the scheme regardless of their location or population.

“People have been paying increased prices for canned and bottled drinks since the beginning of November, yet there

is nowhere to redeem the containers locally,” he said.

Currently, the closest collection centre is Resource Recovery Australia at Tuncurry and the nearest reverse vending machine is located at Woolworths Medowie.

Mr Freihaut said the Club is currently working through the process to register for the scheme.

When approved, residents will be able to drop off their bottles and cans at the club and receive a 10 cent refund for each eligible container

Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead said he is pushing to have eight deposit stations in the electorate.

But with no details of their intended location as yet, it is unlikely that the stations will be operational anytime soon.

Speaking with News Of The Area, Mr Bromhead said the initiative will be rolledout gradually with the aim of reducing the number of drink containers that end up as litter.

“It is a new scheme so there is going to be hiccups and angst about it, but we are doing everything we can to make sure that it works,” he said.

Mr Freihaut is expecting that the local collection point at the Club will be operational early in the new year.

They start with a note about buying a secret Santa gift for a kid you’ve never met (present number one) and regress from there. There’s the ‘dress up as your favourite Christmas Carol’ and bring a gold coin event (a three-hour Kmart visit before you end up sending your child in a green T-shirt with baubles pinned to every inch of fabric because his “branches green delight us”. Then add 200 candy canes since Claudette wants to improve her social status by giving every kid in primary school a festive gift. Behold the end-of-year presentation where you get to see Jemima ChaseAugenstino receive the Academic Award for the fifth year in a row, while your little Benny gets the ‘Improved Anger Management’ certificate and Mrs Chase-Augenstino smiles at you like the cat that ate the cream bun and says, “Oh, what a lovely surprise for both of us.”

As someone who has many friends and relatives in the profession (bless their little cotton socks full of resilience and dedication), let me just tell you what they don’t want this year, in no particular order: a signed copy of The Complete Burke’s Backyard. A Donald Trump doll that says, “It’s fake news; Hillary did it; I will build a great wall” and various other gems when you pat his toupee. A mug that has been printed with a photo of your child (these gifts can be very off-putting to the teacher’s actual children when they visit on Christmas Day). Ten-year-old resource books that you found in your attic that you feel will be handy in the classroom (they won’t be). $100 in a brown paper bag in exchange for next year’s Academic Award for little Benny (teachers have strict moral codes that can’t be cracked). Finally, anything that they will have difficulty fitting in their car boot on the last day of school (though it is possibly fair payback for all the dog-eared books, paintings, half-chewed erasers, broken pencils and various other items that your child brings home from school on their last day).

You know, Mrs MM, you really can’t go wrong with a gift voucher and a heartfelt message from your child on a handmade card.

TEA Gardens local Sue Douglas has a smile and a warmth that would light up a hundred Christmas trees.

Sue and husband Joe are the driving force behind the community Christmas Lunch that’s being held again this year at the Masonic Hall on Myall Street.

“This is our 16th year,” Sue told News Of The Area.

“We have a traditional Christmas hot lunch, followed by plum pudding, custard, or fruit salad with ice-cream, homemade Christmas cake, mince pies, wine, beer, soft drinks, coffee and tea.”

Sue began the Christmas lunch to give people who may not have family or friends

close by or are unable to cook for themselves, a place to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.

“I just love that people are receiving something, that someone cares enough to give them a gift.”

Along with a veritable feast for lunch, there are raffles, hampers, gifts and entertainment.

After 16 years, Sue also has some funny tales to tell.

“A couple rang up to book and asked if their child could come along as well,” Sue said.

“As it’s a lunch that’s not designed for children I asked how old their daughter was and they said, 51,” Sue laughed.

Sue Douglas is very thankful to the community

and businesses for the donations that help make the lunch such a success.

She also wants to reassure the community that she’ll continue to do the Christmas Lunch as long as she’s able.

“I do have dementia but I will continue to do the lunch every year until I forget there is a Christmas.”

45 people have already booked their seat at the table.

Patron’s Day Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

22 November A great roll-up of 52 players turned out to compete in the annual Patron’s Day competition played in sunny conditions.

The day was sponsored

by Gary Melrose, a great supporter of our club.

Life Member, Daryl Martin, filled in for Gary who is currently sailing the blue oceans of the world,

and presented the winning team of; Vic Garlick, Col Fossey, Nevill Vaughan and Bill Heylbut with their prize.

With the grass green out for renovation work and numbers looking so good for next week, teams of four will replace the usual nominated triples.

This is not a bad thing as this gives everyone a chance to form your teams for the Fours Championship early January and the Pennant season next year.

By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 28th November: Thirty two lady bowlers presented to participate in the annual President versus Secretary Trophy Day. Teams are randomly selected by the Match Committee to bowl for either the President or the Secretary.

Format for play was 3 games of 3 bowls Triples 18 ends and a game of 2 bowls, Fours also of 18 ends.

The final score of each team is tallied and, naturally the side with the most points is the winner. This year the President’s bowlers were the winners 94 v the Secretary 73.

A fun day of bowling was enjoyed by all.

Thanks to our hard working Social Committee Dale Winter, Ingrid Luck and Bette Saillard everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch following play.

The “Spider” was won by Jo Younghusband.

24 November Another well attended Friday Open Pairs day with 22 players competing in great spring conditions..

With bragging rights up for grabs the competition was intense.

It is always great to see the very popular Frank Zumbo back at Tea Gardens and his game has moved up a notch since his departure for Sydney where he now plays with the Randwick BC. He joined with partner, John Slater, to boast their winning performance with +33.

They scraped in over Gary Wynne and Mark Hair on +32 and the Triples game winners, Dave Ransome, Lon Richards and Col Saillard.

25 November The Annual Dolphin Day was held today with a full complement of representatives from both the Women’s and Men’s Bowling Clubs.

The day started with the solemn raising and lowering of the flag to commemorate the passing of friends and colleagues over the years.

The competition that followed was a tough struggle with the men defending their, as yet untarnished , winning record and the ladies determined to win, by fair means or foul, to

PROPOSAL TO UPGRADE A MOBILE PHONE TELECOMMUNICATIONS FACILITY IN SOLDIERS POINT Optus plans to improve the telecommunications services in Soldiers Point and surrounding areas with the installation of a telecommunications facility at an existing site to improve coverage and mobile phone services in the area.

Optus proposes to install a new telecommunications facility at: - 5-7 Mitchell Street, Soldiers Point NSW 2317 (RFNSA No. 2317002) Involving: • The replacement of three (3) existing panel antennas with three (3) new Optus antennas at a height of 15.7m on new mounts; • The installation of twelve (12) new Remote Radio Units (RRUs) at a height of 15.7m on the existing tower on new mounts; • The installation of a new GPS antenna at a height of 16.7m; • Associated and necessary ancillary works to ensure the proper functioning of the telecommunications facility including cabling, earthing, signage, safe access, electrical works and replacement or strengthening of the existing mounting arrangement.

The proposed works do not require development approval. The proposed works are defined as “Low-impact Facilities” in accordance with the Telecommunications (Low-impact Facilities) Determination 1997 and “maintenance activity” as defined in Schedule 3 of the Telecommunications Act 1997. The proposed infrastructure complies with the ACMA EMR regulatory arrangements.

THANKS to all who participated in this Free Competition held Saturday 4th November, 2017.

Nineteen Trophies in Ten Divisions were up for grabs!

Usually it’s the youngsters who “ throng to throw thongs” but this year the X & Y Generationsplus the “Baby Boomer” & “Builder” Generation (born pre 1945) queued to “Have a Go!” with some unexpected results.

Results were as follows.

3yrs/Under: Girls: Kayleigh Thompson (20 mths) - 1.08m (Hawks Nest) - new residents & so Mum was delighted something for the Baby Book!
