Principal Moving On AFTER almost a decade at the helm, Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) Principal, Mr Don Hudson, has been farewelled and taken up a new position with the Department of Education in Newcastle.

During his time at BCS, Mr Hudson has seen the integration of technology throughout the school, significant investment into teacher professional learning and a focus on the student voice.

He also lead the school through the implementation of a new senior curriculum.

“There was a significant change to the structure of the Year 11 and 12 curriculum to provide students with a greater

choice of subjects,” he said.

“This was needed because of our small senior years and the diminishing choice of subjects that our senior students had.”

Mr Hudson began his teaching career in 1983 as an Industrial Arts teacher at Courallie High School in the Moree district.

He then held various teaching and executive positions in Deniliquin, Broken Hill, Ungarie and Newcastle before being appointed to Bulahdelah in 2009.

Local beach recovery expert Steve Webb from Tea Gardens Marine Mechanics was called late on Monday afternoon.

“They’d been driving too close to the water and when a wave came, they’ve veered to try and avoid it and rolled it,” Steve said.

“I was called and it wasn’t quite low tide and we would have lost the light, you really

need an excavator in those circumstances.”

It took two days before Fenwick’s Off Road Haulage dragged the Landcruiser from the water.

Local Darren Rapley is the town’s other beach recovery expert.

He says he tows an average of 40 cars out of the sand every year.

“The beach can get really soft especially towards the water,” Darren told News Of The

“You’ve got to let your tyres down when driving on the sand.”

Steve Webb also warns, “Driving at speed when your tyres are low can make your car very unstable.”

It’s believed the Landcruiser belonged to a Father of one of the young men.

The car is a ‘writeoff’.

The history of ‘The Branch’ EXCITING times ahead for the Karuah local History Group.

Last year the Myall Coast News Of The Area put out the call for anyone with information about ‘The Branch’ to help the Society compile a book of the area’s rich history.

18 months down the track and a lot of painstaking research and the book ‘The Branch: The Community And Its People’ is ready to be launched.

“The book has been a collaborative effort by three members of Karuah Local History Group, namely Benita Parker, Paul Mulvaney and myself,” the Group’s Secretary Robyn Witt told News Of The Area.

‘’We felt that the area had a great story to tell.”

“The village’s heyday was between 1890 to 1935, although the area’s history goes back to the days of the Australian Agricultural Company and their million acre grant in 1826.”

“A sawmill was built there in the 1890s, and was the main source of employment.”

“The village had its own school, hall, post office and a Union Church, used by various denominations.’’

“As you can imagine, the majority of people who had connections with ‘The Branch’ are no longer with us, and those who are left are all well up in years, so it was also a case of something had to be done now,” Robyn said.

The book is being launched on Saturday 14 October at 5pm at the Karuah RSL. Guest Speaker will be John Chadban OAM.

The book launch will be followed by a film night featuring ‘Forty Thousand Horsemen’.

Brendan Guiney, Director of Water Services at MidCoast Water told News Of The Area, “We were onto the job within hours of being notified.”

“The sewers in this area are gravity fed and there’s also a lot of tree roots that can do damage to the pipes.”

Mayor and Deputy Elected AT the first meeting of the new MidCoast Council, David West was elected Mayor and Katheryn Smith as his deputy.

In an emotional address, Mayor West said he was immensely proud and very honoured to be selected to represent the region.

“It now falls to us to build this community together, I genuinely believe we have the skills to deliver to you a Council that you will be proud of,” he said.

“We are here for you to come and talk to, that is the heart of local Ggovernment.”

The 11 Councillors had the sole responsibility of electing the Mayor which was conducted as a preferential ballot.

Councillors Kathryn Bell, Brad Christensen, Jan McWilliams and Len Roberts

also threw their hats into the ring, with three counts required to distribute preferences and determine the result.

A second preferential ballot was held to elect the deputy Mayor from four hopeful nominees.

Speaking with News Of The Area, Gloucester’s Katheryn Smith said she is “very excited” about her new position.

“The overwhelming support was just amazing,” she said.

“The whole system has given me a little bit more faith, it shows that you don’t have to have a party background or the wealth to spend on a huge campaign to be elected.”

With plans to visit Bulahdelah regularly,

Katheryn said she is looking forward to building a strong rapport with the community.

Katheryn will hold the deputy Mayor position for 12 months.

“In September 2018, we will go through the same process again,” she said.

“I will have a good feel of the workload by then, and my peers will get a good feel of how I am performing.”

Mayor West, who has more than 20 years experience in local Government, will hold the top position for two years.

During last week’s inaugural meeting at Taree, each of the Councillors were sworn in and took their Affirmation or Oath of Office.

THE man given the large task of managing one of the State Government’s biggest portfolios has accepted an invitation to speak at the upcoming Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Progress Association meeting.

Glenn Bunny is Director of Infrastructure and Land Management with the Department of Primary Industries.

Progress Association Secretary, Patricia Garrard lists some of his responsibilities.

“He’s responsible for regional ports, of which Tea Gardens is one, Holiday Parks such as Jimmys Beach and Hawks Nest Caravan Parks, the New South Wales dredging program, Coastal management, bushfire, pest and weed control and land owner consents.”

Myall River Action Group said, “Mr Bunny’s responsibilities stretch from the Queensland to the Victorian borders and he is up to date with the various issues within the Myall area.”

Nineteen youngsters, from toddlers to teenagers, were given the job of stencilling, colouring and sewing a library bag which was uniquely their own.

MidCoast Council Outreach Officer, Meredith Campbell told News Of The Area, “We do this to get the children into the Library to have a good positive experience from a young age so they’ll follow through for the rest of their lives.”

Volunteer Gaye Granger had spent a very busy day, first at the Forster Library then heading to Tea Gardens in the afternoon helping the children with the basics of bag decorating.

“I’ve been volunteering for two years now and I help the children with the craft side of things, stencilling, drawing and sewing,” Gaye said.

There is something for all ages at the Library from computer aids, e-books, toddlers’ “Turtle Time” and homework help.

Tea Gardens Library’s Carol Johnson recently introduced a community jigsaw puzzle for locals and

visitors to piece together.

Young locals, Connor and Maddison McIntosh and Carissa Pope were visiting the

Library to use the Wifi and scanning books to borrow when they found the right spots for the last 100 pieces.

They were chuffed and so was Carol that the Library continues to attract Generation Z.

outside of the area.”

The President of the PSVN, Mr Jim Horton OAM told the meeting that in the last year nearly 450 DVA claims had been processed by the volunteer

organisation.

Barrie said “Member Organisations present at the meeting signed a Memorandum of Understanding to remain a member of the network for

a further 12 months and are pictured in the photograph with Meryl Swanson holding the signed agreement.”

Port Stephens Veteran Network THE Federal Member for Port Stephens, Meryl Swanson MP recently attended the Port Stephens Veterans Network (PSVN) Management Committee meeting at Tanilba Bay. The purpose of the visit was to meet all members who support the work of PSVN and the PSVN authorised Pension and Welfare Advocates who provide Department of Veterans Affairs services to current and ex-service personnel and their families and widows.

Meryl also presented a letter from the Minister for Veterans Affairs confirming a grant of $50,200 to PSVN to allow them to provide support services for the next 12 months.

Now the dust has settled concerning the last local government election, I’m still peeved by something.

There was no sausage sizzle. It was the same at the last federal election. Not one sizzling sausage in sight. With most elections about as interesting as watching cement set, the only thing that saved them was the almost compulsory sizzle, raffle or cake stall.

What is happening to democracy and the Australian way of life?

Mr JWS Dear Mr JWS, THE wafting odour of a sizzling sausage is enough to entice even the most reticent voter.

Forget the optimistic political pundits handing out flyers.

We don’t vote because Roger McMinty is going to build a theme park in Tea Gardens, or Mary Rogerson is going to fill every pot hole in Hawks Nest.

No, Mr JWS, we attend the polling booths, every man and his dog (particularly his dog), for the sausage sizzle (and to dodge a fine).

Communities live and breath sausage sizzles.

There’s something nourishing about trying to balance an icy can of lemonade in one hand and a slice of white bread, soggy with barbecue sauce, offal juice and sheep intestine, in the other.

I mean emotionally nourishing, of course, because it’s certainly not nourishing from a dietary perspective.

We’d be better off with half-coconuts filled with quinoa, beetroot, sprouts, cucumber and grated carrot (washed down with a pineapple, orange and mint smoothie).

But where’s the fun in that, JWS? We’re not a bunch of Bondi Hipsters. No, we’re Hawks Nest Hobblers with Hip Replacements.

And we’re okay with that, as long as it comes with a sausage on voting day.

IT was great to see the report and photo by Scott Harris (NOTA 28 September) of the koala on the beach heading for Yacaaba.

The last sighting of a koala on Yacaaba in our records was on 17 March 2009, so it is a fairly rare occurrence.

Since 1989 the Myall Koala and Environment Group has been recording

koala sightings in the Myall Coast area.

The only way we can do this is if people tell us of their sighting, including a date and reasonably accurate location. Anyone can report a sighting to us on our Koala Sightings Hotline answering machine – 4997 0878.

Hawks Nest Newsagent Hugo Elstermann has joined thousands of other Australian newsagents in a campaign against newcomer to the gambling market ‘Lottoland’.

HAWKS Nest Newsagent Hugo Elstermann has joined thousands of other Australian newsagents in a campaign against newcomer to the gambling market ‘Lottoland’.

Hugo met with Adam Joy, CEO of the Australian Lottery and Newsagents Association last week and ‘Lottoland’ was top of their agenda.

“It’s not actually a lottery, customers are being misled,”

Mr Joy told News Of The Area.

“Lottoland has a license in the Northern Territory as an online gaming service, they’re not a lottery business, the money is going back to Gibraltar which is a tax haven.”

“It’s banned in South Australia, Western Australia is about to ban it and New South Wales and Victoria are looking into it,” Mr Joy said.

“We’re trying to make sure consumers know what they’re actually buying and

where their money is going and we’re working with State and Federal Governments to change the legislation.”

“For New South Wales, $250 million goes into consolidated revenue, from State Lottery taxes and that money goes to things like police, hospitals, schools and roads.”

Nationwide $1.1 billion goes back into Government coffers.

“We’re losing foot traffic which comes into the shop, as well as our interaction with the customers,” Hugo said.

“Mr Joy added, “If Hugo sells an official $1 lottery ticket, 25 cents goes straight back to State Government revenue, if you put $1 in Lottoland it all goes overseas.”

There are also no guarantees when it comes to the prize money.

Mr Joy claims Lottoland has only made one millionaire since its inception as opposed to the NSW Lotteries which turned 70 people into instant millionaires last year.

Hugo said, “When you go online with NSW Lotteries, the revenue goes to the Government, when you bet with Lottoland the money goes overseas.”

Volunteering Pays Off SECURING a job as a firefighter with the NSW Forestry Corporation is a dream come true for 20-yearold Meagan Terry.

“I have always wanted to work as a firefighter, I couldn’t believe it when I got the job,” she said.

Meagan has been a volunteer with the Bulahdelah Rural Fire

Brigade for the past three years and has attended more than 100 fires during this time.

“My experience with the RFS got me the job, they know that I am capable of doing it,” she said.

In addition to keeping busy with callouts and training sessions, Meagan experienced her first

“It is a good feeling knowing you are helping out and making a difference,” she said.

“My confidence is boosted every time I go out, every situation is different so I learn something new every time.”

Meagan told News Of The Area the camaraderie that exists between members of the Brigade is one of the best parts of volunteering.

“You feel like you are part of a huge family, they look after you and help you every step of the way,” she said.

“You also work with people from other RFS Organisations so I have made many new friends, it is like one big extended family.”

WHEN did you last have a PSA blood test?

Medical statistics indicate 35 to 40 percent of our aged male population are or will be experiencing prostate and/or bladder problems.

(surgical removal of a cancerous prostate) to brachytherapy (insertion of radioactive seeds into the cancer).

The Group has a coffee, beer or a wine, and shares any developments in treatment and results.

They share news on prostate cancer research and men’s health in general.

It is confidential and private, informative and educational.

Some members have been or are part of trials for different treatment regimes.

Come along, all you may wish to do is listen, and that’s okay.

The next meeting is Tuesday 31 October at Benchmark on Booner at 2pm.

Girls Approached POLICE are urging residents to be alert after two girls were approached by a man in a car at Hawks Nest last week.

Investigators were told the girls, aged nine and 10, were walking their dog along Monterra Avenue just before 6pm on Thursday 28 September when a white SUV Jeep passed them.

The car did a u-turn before pulling up in front of the girls.

Police were told a man approached the nine-yearold, grabbing her by the arm and pulling her towards the vehicle.

She was able to break free, scratching the man’s face in the process, before the girls fled the scene.

Investigating police said they would like to speak to a man described as being aged in his 40s and balding with grey hair.

He was last seen wearing

a black t-shirt.

In a media interview last week, a police spokesperson said they believe there were two occupants in the vehicle.

“We can’t say if the car is a local car or from out of town, but we are lead to believe that it was an older style car,” they said.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have seen a white SUV Jeep driving around the Hawks Nest area on Thursday 28 September to contact local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Tough Trail Of Faith

A GROUP of 80 youths gathered in Bulahdelah over the long weekend to take part in a three-day re-enactment of the historic Mormon pioneer trek.

Dressed in long skirts, bonnets, aprons and suspenders, the young people

pulled heavy carts through paddocks and wetlands to experience the struggles the early Utah Pioneer Church members endured on their journey to Salt Lake Valley in the mid-1800s.

“They are using handcarts similar to those the pioneers

used and have to carry everything they need for the trek,” Newcastle Stake President Jacob Whiting said.

“It helps them to understand the physical and spiritual hardships the pioneers faced.”

Christmas Gifts for Kids in need

RESIDENTS from Peter Sinclair Gardens have added their special touch to what’s called the ‘Shoebox Project’ run by the Tea Gardens Baptist Church.

As part of their regular monthly ‘Skills Day’ outings, the Peter Sinclair residents have helped fill 31 colourful

boxes with treasures to be sent to children in need as a Christmas gift.

“The first age group is two to four, the second aged group is five to nine and third group is 10 to 14,” Ruth Calcutt told News Of The Area.

“There are boxes for girls and boys and each box contains six unique gifts.”

MIDCOAST Council will hold its next round of community update sessions throughout October.

The meetings provide an opportunity to meet the new Councillors and find out how Council is progressing.

On the agenda is plans to address issues identified by residents as

priorities and strategies for the year ahead.

An outline of the upcoming process for developing the MidCoast Community Strategic Plan will also be discussed.

Ten meetings have been scheduled throughout the region, starting with a session at Forster Council Chambers at 10am on Tuesday 10 October.

accompanied by a support crew of 40 adults, including local event coordinator, Nicky Hammerl.

Nicky said the final day of the challenging trek involved crossing the Myall River and a mountain climb.

The group completed their journey without any modern conveniences or hygiene items.

“There are no mobile

phones or anything else that might provide comfort, it’s really back to basics,” Jacob told News Of The Area.

“They slept on tarps and had to dig their own toilets so they can understand the hardships these early pioneers had to endure.”

Jacob said the trek also showed the youths that they can work outside their comfort zone.

The participants, from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, came from Newcastle and Coffs Harbour, and everywhere in between.

“We have found the people of Bulahdelah to be extremely friendly and accommodating,” Jacob said.

The tri-annual trek is one of many pioneer handcart reenactments held throughout the world.

SWIMMING season has kicked off in the MidCoast region, with Council pools now open to the public.

With the combination of warmer weather and school holidays, the pools have been flooded with swimmers eager to get wet.

In preparation for the launch of the swim season, MidCoast Council in conjunction with Macquatics Training conducted a maintenance and safety audit of Bulahdelah Pool.

A Council spokesperson said several repairs were

carried out last month.

“The pool was emptied, pool decks and tiles were repaired then repainted,” the spokesperson said.

“New signage and depth markers were fitted as well as general maintenance.”

In previous years, Council pools have traditionally opened over the October long weekend.

“Due to the early school holidays and the very warm weather conditions, we decided to bring the opening of all pools forward one week,” the spokesperson said.

Bulahdelah pool

opened a few days later than expected due to a misinterpretation of the change in plans.

The pool is now open from 7am till 7pm daily, except for Tuesday and Friday mornings when it opens at 9am.

Entry is $1 for children and pensioners and $3 for adults.

Family season passes can be purchased for $51.50 from the Bulahdelah Visitor Information Centre.

The swimming season will run until the 29 April 2018.

KARUAH Roos presentation night was a great success, despite the long weekend and the school holidays pulling a few families away from being able to attend.

Karuah Roos players, club members, volunteers, and their guests were treated to a roast dinner prepared by the club, and scrumptious desserts.

Club representative Sonja Evans, the Club Coach and Club President Fiona Manton announced the award winners for the season, and thanked

everyone involved in the club for their efforts to make sure the season was a great success The Harold Evans Memorial for Rising Star Award went to Justin Anderson, and the Ben Jones Memorial Coaches Award went to Matthew Weatherall.

The Ken Barry Memorial for Rookie of the Year went to Adam Crampton, and the Morten Family Club Man of the Year was awarded to Trent Hartup.

The Timmy Greentree Memorial award for most tries was awarded to Luke Perry with 24 tries this season.

They defeated Dawn Jones, Bev Stephens, Dale Winter and Karen Green.

The game on Rink 10 followed a similar pattern

Christine Fossey, Veronica Conaghan, Bev Rhodes and Karen McPhie had a solid lead from the beginning, eventually downing Pam Gilchrist, Robyn Webster, Carol Hayden and Nola Jackson by 13 shots.

A much closer contest on Rink 11, Dawn May, Jill McBride, Olive McKeown and Wendy Brand led by 8 shots on the 4th end but this lead dwindled to 1 by the 11th end and eventually Bev Dunn, Francis Betar, Julie Kennedy and Lynne Green took the lead and came out winners. The final score 16 v 14.

Winners on the day with the highest score were Christine Fossey, Veronica Conaghan, Bev Rhodes and Karen McPhie.

Thursday 28 September: The RSL Pairs Trophy Day was held.

Thanks to the RSL SubBranch for sponsoring this annual event, without your support Trophy Days like this would not be possible.

Hawks Nest Ladies Golf Results

ALMOST 70 bowlers descended onto the greens at Bulahdelah Bowling Club last week for the annual Queen of the Mountain Women’s Bowls tournament.

Under the towering Alum Mountain, 22 teams from Karuah, Tea Gardens, Bulahdelah and further afield battled it out for the crown in the full day triples competition.

The weather conditions proved to be a challenge, with gusts of wind testing the players throughout the two 15-end games.

Bulahdelah Women’s Bowls President, Loretta Towers, said she was pleased with the standard of play.

“It was quite enjoyable to watch,” she said.

“On a whole, there was some good bowls played.”

Loretta said scorekeeper Rodney Lansdowne, games organiser Val Lynch and umpire Ken Southern ensured the competition ran smoothly.

Loretta said the highlight of the competition, which has been running for almost a decade, continues to be the friendships formed between

the players.

“It is great to get players from around the area together, it is always good be able to interact with the other clubs,” she said.

“The good thing about the competition this year is that we had some younger

competitors take part who are normally unable to come down because of work commitments.”

Loretta thanks all players and officials for contributing to the success of the day.

“We hope to see everyone again next year,” she said.
