Traditionally, the male event includes throwing a brick which weighs in at five pounds and the women hurl two and a half pound rolling pins, providing a chance to demonstrate their impressive skills while taking part in this historic event.

Hunter Strongman and reigning Australian Champion brick thrower, Kurt Livens (from Largs) and Stroud local, Sarah Eggins the current rolling pin champion, are both returning to the 2019 event to defend their titles.

If you are up for the challenge to beat Kurt’s 2018 record of 85’ 3” (25m) and Sarah’s 96’ 10” (29m) - entries for all categories open from approximately 11.30am on event day.

Nobody would have ever assumed that an entire event could be based on a brick, and that so much fun could be had from such a basic object.

Boasting a population of over 700 the little town of Stroud, NSW however had very different ideas for this slab of cement, and are now the only Stroud in the world to continue this whacky tradition.

In 1960 the towns of Stroud in the UK and the USA, both brick-making towns, held the first bricking-throwing contest. With

ON one of the bleakest and wettest evenings this Winter, over seventy members and guests of the Rotary Club of Myall Coast attended the 17th Changeover night last Monday to witness the induction of the incoming President, Ian Mackenzie-Smith.

Emcee, Geoff Latona, took great delight in entertaining the audience with his jokes and humorous stories as he officially opened the evening and continued to keep the members and guests enthralled as the night progressed.

Member, Judy Richardson, orated the toast to Rotary International and emphasized the importance of fellowship whilst working together and putting “Service above Self.”

Judy also focused on the promotion of high ethical standards and said to her audience, “All of what I have said this evening regarding fellowship, service, high ethical standards, they all depend on people, people like you and me so if you want to see the true face of Rotary, look in the mirror and remind yourself that you are the face of Rotary.”

Next on the agenda was the presentation of the Paul Harris Awards which date back to 1957 and these were presented this year to husband and wife team, Bev and Geoff Latona.

These awards are a way for a local club to

recognize individuals for outstanding and exceptional service in the community.

After receiving this prestigious award, Bev said, “I don’t believe that I am the only person who is worthy of this award.”

Charter President of Rotary, Geoff said, “It is a privilege to be honoured with the Paul Harris award by our local club and it is great to be part of the team.”

Kate Washington MP, amidst her very busy schedule, was in attendance and spoke with sincerity about the good work that the local Rotary Club achieves in our community and said, “I always find that this club is a very caring group and when I come to these meetings, I am inspired.”

DUE to Crown Lands recently posting a revised order at the Tea Gardens Slipway the facility is now open for business for general repairs and emergencies but are still unable to wash down vessels until a temporary waste water collection facility is installed at the Slipway.

President of the Slipway Association, Paul Bendy, told News of the Area, “The Slipway Association, Crown Lands and Council met recently to discuss the order that had been put in place and the outcome was that Crown Lands were willing to revise the original version of the order which has now allowed the Slipway to reopen.

“Now that the revised order has been put in place, we will be in a position to commence work on the temporary waste water collection facility as soon as possible.”

Priority will be given to those owners who had their vessel booked but were prevented from using the facility due to the initial Crown Lands order.

The Slipway Association is currently finalizing the plans for the slipway upgrade which will ultimately be a benefit to the whole community.

NOTA called Crown Land for a comment however nothing was given at the time of publication.

The concepts of Deeds and Agreements are often incorrectly used interchangeably. From a legal perspective, the two (2) concepts are different and are used in different circumstances.

The significant differences are as follows:(a) Writing – Agreements do not necessarily need to be in writing or signed. However, a Deed must be written on paper, parchment or vellum. (b) Witnessing – An Agreement does not require a signature by a witness, however witnessing may be of

evidentiary value. A Deed must be witnessed by a person not a party to the Deed. (c) Execution – The execution of an Agreement by a party will generally only constitute an offer and will not bind that party unless there is an express intention to do so.

However, the execution of a Deed will usually bind a party immediately even if other parties have not yet executed the Deed. (d) Consideration – An Agreement requires consideration to pass between the parties to the Agreement. A Deed does not require consideration.

Hawks Nest Hall Prior to the Federal election, Dr Gillespie announced a $300k grant to council for community facilities (hall). There has been some misinformation circulating that the grant is available now and why hasn’t council started? Although the grant is allocated there is a process that must be followed. The Grant office will be in contact with the council in due course asking them to complete the grant funding agreement and acceptance.

Once that has been completed, approval will be sent to the Council A & BThis Foley advising the Created: acquittal procedure.

Bridge Club hold Grand National Open Teams event Hawks Nest Bridge Club recently participated in the first round of the Grand National Open Teams event which is an Australia wide competition.

A good turnout of 10 teams played over two successive Fridays in June. This competition is different from many bridge competitions as it is played in teams of four not just two partners and everyone plays everyone else using the same boards of cards. The highest ranked players then progress to the next round playing against other top teams in the Hunter region before, hopefully, going on to the Grand Final – a 4 day event which will be held in Tweed Heads in November.

The result was excitingly close with two teams (pictured) finishing at the top of the rankings with only one point between them.

Friday 28th June: Robyn Webster, Karen McPhie and Bette Saillard travelled to Lemon Tree Passage for the annual NDWBA President, Secretary, Treasurer and Delegates Day. Bowls, raffles, lucky door prizes and lunch.

The purpose of this event is for the District to say thanks to the Committee members of all the Clubs in their District and giving all the opportunity to "get to know each other" a little better. Our ladies had a wonderful day.

Coming events: Tuesday 2nd July: Lemon Tree Passage Trophy Day. Saturday 6th July: Weekend Pennants commences. Monday 8th July: Day 1 District Pairs Competition.

TUESDAY 25th June: The final round of the Annis Young Consistency Competition, Robyn Beaumont v Lynda Richards and Maynie Roberts v Robyn Webster. The winner of this even is the first bowler to reach 150, points are awarded as follows 4 points to the bowl closest to the Jack then 3 points, 2 points and then 1 point. Robyn and my game lasted for 29 ends. I held the lead till the 9th end then Robyn edged ahead holding the lead by 19 on the 22nd end 117 v 98. On the 25th end I had managed to narrow her lead to 5, 125 v 120 but the last 4 ends belonged to Robyn winning 151 v 134. On the next Rink Maynie and Robyn (Webster) battled for 27 ends. This was a very close contest both bowlers taking turns in holding a narrow lead the score on the 19th end Robyn 97 v Maynie 93. The next 6 ends belonged to Maynie, she added 45 shots to her tally, winning 152 v 118. Maynie and Robyn (Beaumont) will now represent our Club at the District Annis Young Competition which will be held in October, not the first time for either of them to have won this honour. Thanks to Karen Green for umpiring and the Markers Dale Winter and Francis Betar. Due to weather conditions there were only a few members present for social bowls, 2 games of Triples. Sheril Johnson, Maureen Campbell and Dale Cameron 19 v Dawn May, Lyn Nightingale and Karen McPhie 17. Sheila Rattray, Christine Fossey and Bette Saillard 15 v Dawn Jones, Jean Glover and Jill McBride 9. The winners, winning with the highest score were Dale's team.
