Celebrating Meals on Wheels

Firefighters Honoured THREE members of the Bulahdelah Fire Brigade have been honoured by the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) in recognition of their ongoing commitment to their community.

Formally acknowledging their years of dedication, volunteers Mark Hartwell, Dave Morgan and Laurie Sumner were each presented with a 10year Service Medal at a ceremony recently held at Tuncurry.

At 86 years young, Laurie is one of the Brigade’s most active members and has attended 93 percent of all callouts since he started volunteering 11 years ago.

Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea has been raising much needed funds for a cause close to all of our hearts.

Doing their bit in a big way last weekend, were the residents of Palm Lake Resort in Tea Gardens.

Tables were laden with delicious delights as the community came together for a morning of entertainment and of course, great food and cups of tea.

There was also performances from the Resort’s Choir and a number of other musical numbers.

“All of us are touched by cancer, it’s an insidious disease.”

Last year the Australia wide campaign raised an amazing $11.9 million.

The Cancer Council uses that money for research but also to support people and families living with cancer and to prevent cancer.

For example, $25

covers the cost of protecting 15 children from potentially harmful exposure through the SunSmart School program. $155 provides transport and a night’s stay at a Cancer Council Lodge for people who need to travel for vital cancer treatment.

All the members of the Palm Lake Social Committee ensured the Big Morning Tea in the Promenade Room was a huge success and are sure to be back to do it all again next year.

Celebrating Meals on Wheels

THE tables were groaning with morning tea delights, and the smiles on the faces of the Meals on Wheels volunteers told the story.

They were all happy to be in each other’s company, a rare treat for the group, as they celebrated Volunteers Week last Wednesday.

The team, which is based

in the Hawks Nest Community Centre, cooks and delivers more than a thousand meals a month to clients who live as far away as Bulahdelah to the north, to Karuah to the south and all points in between.

“Some of our volunteers have been with us for 15 years,” Dan Holmes said.

“Without the volunteers we

Meredyth Rae, the Office Supervisor said, “Our kitchen is staffed mainly volunteers on our cooking days.”

Top Student Awarded BULAHDELAH Central School student Seleana Murphy has been awarded a Harding Miller Education Foundation Scholarship in recognition of her top academic achievements.

The four-year scholarship, valued at up to $20,000, was announced at the annual Public Education Foundation Award ceremony at Sydney Town Hall last week.

“I was ecstatic when I found out I had won the Award,” Seleana said.

“It is very exciting and a great honour to be selected.”

The Harding Miller Foundation focuses on providing resources and support for high achieving girls in Year 9 who are facing disadvantage to lift their educational outcomes and

career aspirations.

Seleana said the Scholarship includes a new laptop computer, home internet access, face-toface tutoring and mentoring along with cash to help with school expenses.

“It is going to make a big difference,” she said.

“It will help me alot at school and it will also help me achieve my future educational goals.”

After completing Year 12, Seleana said she hopes to study nursing at university.

“I want a career where I can help others and nursing will enable me to make a positive impact in many people’s lives,” she said.

Seleana was amongst 230 NSW students who received prestigious scholarships from the Public Education Foundation last week.

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott said the Awards provide financial assistance to the recipients and acknowledges their dedication and commitment.

“These Scholarships are about recognising and rewarding student excellence to encourage high-achieving students to continue to maximise their potential,” he said.

Seleana said the Award has boosted her confidence and provided an opportunity she may not have otherwise had.

“It has given me the chance to reach my dream,” she said.

As children get older their priorities change, and friends and social groups become increasingly significant to them. This creates a tension between the importance of socialising children and the importance of children spending time with their parents – particularly the parent with whom they do not live.

The Family Law Act obligates a parent to do all they can to encourage children to attend with the other parent pursuant to Orders.

It is common for conflict to arise when children want to attend social events at the same time as they are due to spend time with the other parent. Courts have acknowledged this tension, but regularly remind parents of the need to be sensible and display common sense. The Full Court of the Family Court has gone as far as

reminding parents that “…children are not parcels to be passed back and forward at the convenience of parents. Children have lives and routines of their own…” The Court reminds parents that Orders should be seen as providing a template around which they can build the time with their children but, in doing so, parents should try to adopt flexibility and common sense to promote the children’s happiness and well-being. Parents, however, should not underestimate the importance of the other parent in their children’s lives.

Agreement cannot always be reached, and consequently the Court remains available as an avenue for enforcement of Orders.

In such circumstances parents are regularly reminded to consider both the practical utility, and the ultimate effect, of any Court proceedings on their children.

Big Curry Night

By John SAHYOUN THE Bulahdelah War Memorial Trust spiced up their fundraising efforts last week by hosting an Indian Curry Night for the community.

With a winter chill in the air, the large crowd of diners at the RSL Hall quickly warmed from the inside out as they sampled the eight curries on offer.

The dishes were the

culinary delights of renowned local chef Ken Snellgrove and received rave reviews from the guests.

“What a fantastic night, the food was incredible,” one community member told News Of The Area.

“The curries were sensational,” another said.

By Margie TIERNEY MOST Fridays for Myall Coast U3A Group are reserved for a presentation and recently it was the turn of the U3A’s resident Science Teacher, Ronnie Nichols.

“Ronnie was superb in delivering a talk, illustrated with slides and videos, on when and how the first people, the Aborigines, arrived in this Great Southern Land,” Warwick Nichols said.

“To understand that, she gave the U3A audience and guests a geology refresher course on continental drift and plate tectonics as well the astronomy related to the generation of an ice age due to variations in the earth’s path around the sun.”

Warwick added, “This then led to a discussion of glaciation and the

Bollywood style.

“The night was a great way of promoting cultural diversity,” War Memorial Trust Secretary Jeff Carryer said.

“The food and dancing were a highlight and it was great for families in that they could bring their children.”

Jeff said with the support of the community, more than $1,200 was raised from the night.

“The chef volunteered his time, money and expertise for this event,” Jeff said.

“All monies raised will go to maintenance of the Hall and the purchase of equipment to maintain the surrounds of the Rotunda.”

The War Memorial Trust has hosted many successful community events over the years including music and movie nights, men’s health talks, displays and ANZAC Day breakfasts.

Jeff said they are hoping to host further events throughout the year.

“We want to continue to utilise the hall on a regular basis for affordable community events,” he said.

Antique Stolen

POLICE are seeking information in relation to the theft of an antique chair which was recently stolen from St James Church in Bungwahl It is reported that the ornately carved chair was stolen between 8am on Thursday 24 May and 10.30am on Saturday 26 May. Bulahdelah Police said the chair is made of oak and has a distinctive appearance.

Anyone with information about the matter is encouraged to contact police.

The Clinic Bus is increasing its operation from two to three days on a trial basis for the rest of the year.

Currently the “bus” operates on Tuesdays to Raymond Terrace and Maitland and Thursdays to Raymond Terrace and Newcastle. Thanks to generous donations from service clubs and local groups and the willingness of volunteer drivers to give even more of their time the “bus” will now operate on a Wednesday as well to Raymond Terrace and Newcastle.

By Margie TIERNEY MEMBERS of the Galleries in the Gardens are busy creating new works for the group’s annual Winter Warmer Art Exhibition.

And what better place to prepare, than soaking up the autumn sunshine in the gardens of their Gallery in Tea Gardens.

‘One Size Fits All’, is the thought-provoking theme of this year’s exhibition, which is being held at the artists’ new home on Marine Drive.

“The exhibition opens at The Gallery on Friday 8 June at 5pm,” Trevor Cook, President of GIG said.

“We invite you to attend, meet our artists, view their latest works and enjoy a complimentary drink and nibble.”

“During the proceedings Maitland Regional Art Gallery’s Curator, Kim Blunt, will reveal the winning artwork following a day of concerted judging.”

And just like the Archibalds, there’s also a ‘People’s Choice’ award.

“Throughout the June long weekend visitors to The Gallery can cast their vote for their favourite artwork,” Trevor said.

The Winter Warmer exhibition will be on display from Saturday 10 June for a limited time, and entry is free.

It’s been a big year for the Galleries in the Garden, finally having a place to call home and thousands of visitors enjoying the experience as well.

Three hurt in crash THREE people were taken to hospital after a motor vehicle accident at Bulahdelah last weekend.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the two-car collision at the intersection of The Lakes Way and Pacific Highway at about 5pm on 26 May. Police said two people, an 82-yearold man and his 80-year-old wife, were in one of the vehicles and a 25-year-old male was the sole occupant of the other.

Paramedics treated the victims at the scene before both drivers and the passenger were taken to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.

Police said investigations into the cause of the collision are continuing.

Dear Mrs BY, SOME people are hoarders and others are declutterers but you have created a whole new hybrid: a declutterer who wants to hoard, but at your expense. I personally hate clutter. I am not big on knick-knacks or ornaments or stray children. They just gather dust. Clean lines make us feel more in control and able to deal with things. If your home is full of junk, your mind will be full of junk as well.

I know not everyone feels this way, however, and they like to hold onto things like ornaments (and children) for sentimental value. Sure, keep the kids, but do you really need that pottery hippopotamus with the chipped leg, just because Aunt Delilah gave it to you when you were five? How about the three planks of timber rotting in the backyard that are waiting to be constructed into an alfresco area complete with pergola, ornamental grapevine and fire pit? No, you are not really going to turn those broken cups into homemade candles or invite guests over for a high tea. Are you?

Next time your mother-in-law comes up with a handful of gifts, just hold your hand up in a ‘stop immediately’ signal.

Tell her, up front, that if the objects are too good to throw out, she should keep them herself or take them to the recycling centre where they will be put to good use. Your politeness is not only creating a cluttered house, but is taking up valuable headspace conjuring feelings of passive aggression.

In the other game two champions faced off in a game of precision bowls that was a delight to watch.

Sean Mearrick went into the game with a badly damaged left shoulder but played superbly to take the match right up to threetime champion Richard Lee. The match went to 36 ends before Richard powered away in the closing stages.

He won 31-23.

A great final to watch next week with Richard in superb form determined to add another title to his impressive CV.

By The JAFFA 23 MAY: Another beautiful autumn day saw 46 bowlers competed in the Wednesday Nominated Triples competition.

Today there were five teams winning both games, an indication that the competition is heating up with some very interesting games and ends.

The Noel Jackson team recorded a creditable +50; Bill Heylbut’s team and Danny Johnson teams topped that with a +53.

Not to be outdone, the Neville Vaughn “four” recorded a +55 but was edged out on a countback by the team of Peter King, Peter Cheney and John Slater who took away the money.

Interestingly, the Noel Jackson’s team, fuelled by jelly beans, jagged a 9 pointer in their second game and Max Stephens’ side also achieved a 9 followed 5 ends later with an 8.

Still not good enough to get the money!

The Myall Bistro voucher went to the lucky winner John Yabsley.

25 May: Open Friday Pairs was played today with 17 players taking part.

26 May: In the Newcastle District Saturday Pennant competition played today, the Pelican Pest Control sponsored Grade 4 side played at home against East Maitland whilst the Pelican Pest Control Grade 6 side also played East Maitland at East Maitland.

Both sides had disappointing results with just one Grade 4 team managing a close win over their opponents.

The team of Ken Devlin, Col Amos, Mark Hair and Jeff Baker managed to scrape home 22-21.

The remaining teams recorded losses and the Master Board was won by East Maitland 67-49.

The Grade 6 side were bought back to earth with a dull thud in their match against the might of the juggernaut that is East Maitland.

All teams were out-bowled significantly on a sluggish surface with the best performed team being the Noel Jackson four which included Gary Wynne, Graham Kelly, and David Perry.

TUESDAY 22nd May: A good turn up of bowlers considering 3 teams of Fours were down the south coast participating in the Womens Bowls NSW Sate Carnival 2018.

Format for play was 2 games of 3 bowls Triples 18 ends and a Singles Contest between Dale Winter, Bev Stephens and Sandra Leisemann. Great

to see Carolyn Bywater back bowling. A close game all the way between Judi Polak, Dorothy Thompson and Lynne Green v Sheril Johnson, Lily Smith and Jill McBride.

Jill’s team winning 15 v 13.

Carolyn Bywater, Jean Glover and Wendy Jones were equal with Dianne Kiss, Carol Hayden and Robyn Beaumont on the 7th end, 8 all. Robyn’s team claiming victory by 8 shots 19 v 11. The singles contest was 10 ends, 3 competitors each opponent

Minor Singles Decided THIS month saw the playing and winning of the Karuah RSL Bowls Club annual Minor Singles Championship.

The final was played before a large and knowing crowd at the club on a beautifully prepared, of fast, green in good weather. Dave Austin, club Vive President, said, “The minor singles is pivotal and hard fought competition and it marks the winner as a major player in our Club.”

The Major Single Championship has now started in the club.

President Mark Wilkie said, “Any club member who has not won a minor singles competition before can compete in the minor singles and as we welcome new and transferring players as members, one of these could well take the title next year.”
