DAYLIGHT savings ends this weekend, and residents are reminded to change their smoke alarm batteries when setting their clocks back one hour.

Bulahdelah Rural Fire Brigade Deputy Captain Rod Paar, said only a working smoke alarm can save lives.

“Having a smoke alarm with flat batteries is just as bad as having none at all,” he said.

“A fire can take hold in just a few minutes and fill your home with deadly smoke, that will kill you faster than the fire itself,” Rod said a working smoke alarm can provide an early

Rod told News Of The Area, “A working smoke alarm, along with a practiced evacuation plan, will provide the best chances of escaping a fire.”

“It is critical to have an evacuation plan, especially with young children, so they know what to do in an emergency,” he said.

Council was told that a large proportion of pool users are in their senior years and use the pool to keep active.

Royal Life Saving recommends that older people should be encouraged to participate in aquatic activity as a way of providing them with water safety skills while at the same time improving their health and well-being in a low impact setting.

Council was advised that cold water increases the risk factor of cardiac arrest and that Masters Swimming National guidelines states “that anyone who has a cardiac history should be wary in water below 24 degrees”.

Ms Bobako stated that the solar system is not a new asset but maintenance of an existing asset – an asset that has not been managed properly.

A meeting with the Director of Community Spaces will be held to discuss the maintenance of the pool.

Ms Bobako said, “Tea Gardens Pool was built by the community for the community. The Pool is highly valued by our community, and we continue to contribute time and money for the improvement of this public facility.’’

‘Share the Dignity’ April campaign

FORMER Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke famously once said, “by 1990 no Australian child will be living in poverty”.

Tragically, 27 years down the track that commitment is far from a reality.

According to the Australian Council of Social Service, more than 730,000 children or 17.4 percent of all children in Australia are living in poverty, that’s an increase of two percent in the decade between 2004 and 2014.

The ‘Share the Dignity’ Organisation came into being to oversee a number of initiatives that give back to Australian women and children in need.

Last year the generosity of the women in the Myall saw more than 50 handbags full of essential items and gifts donated as part of the charity’s “In the Bag” Christmas campaign.

Now, coming into the month of April ‘Share the Dignity’ is calling on the public to donate sanitary items for homeless women.

Tea Gardens Mum of two, Jodie Genner is once again front and centre of the campaign in the Myall area.

“I am now a registered volunteer for ‘Share the Dignity,’ Jodie told News Of The Area.

With the final stages of preparation underway, the group is hoping to kick-off with a community barbecue towards the end of April, funded by the Blue Light organisation.

“We’ll be holding a sausage sizzle with free snags and music in Wade Park, and we’re organising to bring up some computer game buses from Raymond Terrace for the day,” Ashley said.

A recent case in the Supreme Court (Lindsay v Arnison [2017] NSWSC 41) highlights a need for family members to take seriously the requirement to keep proper financial records when helping aged parents pay bills and operate their accounts. In this case, one sister accused another sister (Ms A) of failing to account properly for their mother’s money in her lifetime and after her death. The mother’s accounts showed regular withdrawals of money and other expenses which were said by the Judge not to be usual for an 80 year old woman. Ms A sought to argue that her approach to her mother’s finances was appropriate. However, she had not kept good accounting records. The Judge remarked that when Ms A operated her mother’s bank account, she did so as her mother’s agent whether she was acting as a formally appointed attorney or her informally appointed agent. He stated that in either case she was subject to a fiduciary duty to act in accordance with the instructions of her mother, and to not engage in transactions on her mother’s accounts for her own interests, or the interests of her family except with the freely given and fully informed consent of her mother. The Judge also stated that the sister was entitled to a much more accurate, and independently verified, accounting in relation to her mother’s affairs than she had received to date.

A GROUP of Year 8 students volunteered to remove litter from the school grounds on Friday, 3 March, in support of the annual Clean Up Australia campaign.

Armed with garbage bins and gloves on their hands, the enthusiastic students were divided into small groups and allocated a section of the school to clean.

Although on first appearance the grounds looked very tidy, the students were amazed at how much litter they were able to find hidden in bushes and other places around the school.

BLUE Light Discos, movie nights and fishing trips are some of the many activities being planned for young people in the area, with Bulahdelah’s Senior Constable Ashley Ray the driving force behind the program.

“I thought that it would be a great idea to work with the youths under the umbrella of the Blue Light Disco to organise fun events for them,” Ashley said.

“It’s an opportunity for the police to work with the community to engage with our youth, put them on the right path, and bridge any barriers.”

Ashley, along with Senior Constables Trevor Mcleod and Dave Feeney, has

attending an NRL game in Newcastle and we are hoping to have some camping sessions as well.”

All young people from Bungwahl to Hawks Nest, Coolongolook to Markwell and everywhere in between, will be invited to join the fun.

“If we can get in and build a repertoire with the youth now, it may change their behaviour later on,” Ashley said.

The program has already had “immense support” from the local community, and with more people involved, “the bigger and better it can be”.

Anyone willing to assist can contact Ashley, Dave or Trevor at Bulahdelah Police Station.

All volunteers require a Working With Children check.

“All of us at the station are very excited about the program, and we can’t wait to show the community what we can do,” Ashley told News Of The Area.

MYALL Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead visited Bulahdelah during his electorate tour last week, giving residents the opportunity to raise local issues with their member.

Mr Bromhead also discussed topics relating to the wider region and said MidCoast Council “was doing an outstanding job” with its strengths in leadership.

“To take over three councils with a huge area in such a short period of time, get all the administration

in place, find savings, and announce a $30million roads and bridge program, that’s fantastic,” he said.

“There are independent reports saying that Great Lakes Council was the best performing council between the Hunter and the Queensland border, and as the General Manager of Great Lakes Council is the General Manager of MidCoast Council, we’re seeing the benefits of his leadership.”

Hive of Activity KARUAH Public School was a hive of activity last week, with new bikes, a cleanup and a morning tea being some of the many activities that kept the students busy.

“The Smith Family has kindly donated two smaller bikes for our Infants students to ride at school,” Relieving Assistant Principal Mrs Kath Henry said.

“The school already has a set of bikes donated from this fantastic organisation and the students ride these regularly at lunch and recess playtime.”

Coordinator Mrs Suzanne Leonard visited the school last Friday to deliver the new bikes.

Captains Shaqueil and Sophie met with Mrs Leonard and took the opportunity to thank The Smith Family for its donation.

A thank you afternoon tea for the ‘Star Leaders’ was also held last week.

“The ‘Star Leaders’ are

senior students who actively organise activities in the playground,” Mrs Henry said.

“They support all students when playing and wear bright vests and hats so they are easily recognised.”

“The primary children knew that a teacher was having their head shaved, but didn’t know who, we wanted it to be a bit of a mystery to keep the awareness in their minds,” she said.

“By keeping them guessing and thinking it might be this one or that one, it made them a bit more involved with it.”

The popular teacher said the students were “surprised, but very excited” when it was revealed that she was the staff member about to be shaved, Mrs O’Connell told News Of The Area she was a little overwhelmed at the support she received.

“The school and the staff have been excellent, and the community’s been brilliant,” she said.

“I set my limit at $500, thinking it would be hard to get to that, but I was really, really happy that it was over $900, and I still have a little bit more to bank.”

Money raised from the World’s Greatest Shave funds support and research for blood cancers, which include leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

According to the

Leukaemia Foundation, around 35 Australians develop a blood cancer every day, and it affects people of all ages.

Although the annual campaign has almost wrapped up for another year, donations can still be made through the foundation’s website.

Nationally, this year’s World’s Greatest Shave campaign raised over $12 million.

JACKIE O’Connell’s hair went flying last week, as she joined the fight against leukaemia by taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave.

The Bulahdelah Central School teacher sat bravely as young students chopped off her locks with the assistance of local hairdresser, Renee Ballantine.

The primary captains then armed themselves with clippers to finish the job.

Mrs O’Connell said with many friends affected by cancer in the past year, she decided to have her head shaved at a school assembly to raise awareness of the cause.

Better Bush Service Needed

AN outage to Telstra’s network in the local area last week left many Bulahdelah residents and businesses without phone and internet services.

The interruption affected over 100 landlines and ADSL services, and is believed to have been caused by the recent heavy rain.

Many disgruntled customers contacted Telstra to complain, only to be told the service could take until 4 April to be repaired.

BULAHDELAH Volunteer Rescue Association’s Peter Mostyn was awarded the Commander’s Plaque of Appreciation at the recent Manning Great Lakes Local Area Command Awards ceremony.

The award was presented

by Superintendent Peter Thurtell, in recognition of Mr Mostyn’s contribution to rescue management in the region.

Always a team player, Mr Mostyn’s first reaction was,

With no financial institution in the small town, frustrations continued when some residents were unable to access their internet banking.

Mr Mostyn joined the Bulahdelah and District Rescue Squad in 1994, and has since given more than two decades of dedicated volunteer service.

He was on call 24-hours a day, and worked alongside police and other emergency services at motor vehicle accidents, search and rescues and countless other situations.

“It doesn’t matter the colour of the uniform as basically we are all out there for the same reason, and that is to assist someone in need,”

“I didn’t even know, I just thought that I was going to get a certificate now that I’ve retired,” he said.

“I was really shocked, but

a car to pieces, it was the fact that you were there and could say ‘hey, how you going’ and provide some comfort.”

Mr Mostyn held an impressive list of positions throughout the region including Mid North Coast Coordinator, Deputy Regional Coordinator for the Hunter, and proudly served on the Local Emergency Management Committee, a position he held until retiring from the association last year.

“The main thing you get out of volunteering is that you’re just able to help, and seeing the difference that makes in the community,” Mr Mostyn said.

“I would love to see more young people join a volunteer organisation, it is one of the greatest things you can do in assisting people at probably a very dark time in their life.”

Mr Mostyn said volunteering also teaches skills that you will have for life.

“Techs are working to identify the issue and restore services as quickly as possible,” he said.

“We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and appreciate our customers’ patience as we work to fix the issue as quickly as possible.”

Fed up with interrupted service, residents want small communities such as

Bulahdelah, to be afforded the same level of service as larger areas.

“It’s only fair that our community can expect the service they pay for, we’ve got a contract they expect us to honour (the payment for), so we expect them to honour the service,” Mr Lock said.

“If it was Sydney and it affected 25,000 phones rather than the 2,500 here, they would fix the problem that day, all we want is equity of access.”

NO district is free from the menace posed by wild dogs, but the Bulahdelah community is making some headway in the fight to control their impact.

In 2016, public reserve managers and private landholders shot or trapped 81 wild dogs in the Bulahdelah district.

Bulahdelah landholder and chair of the District Wild Dog Control Group, Art Brown, said this number confirms there are plenty of wild dogs in the area.

“Importantly, 46 percent of the cull were females which will have a substantial impact on future reproduction, our risk is complacency,” he said.

“Our group has a first class working relationship with all public reserve managers and we acknowledge the skills of Mick Worth, Forestry, and Nick Patteson, National Parks, who trapped 30 wild dogs in various planned and reactive programs during 2016.”

Mr Brown told News Of The Area, the agencies are working together to get the best results for the

community.

Local Land Services Biosecurity Ranger Laurie Mullen, said coordination of a 1080 baiting program with neighbouring properties and the dedicated trapping by skilled land managers and government agency field officers, is the best approach for wild dog control.

Of the 51 wild dogs culled by private landholders in 2016, Mr Brown said 15 percent were trapped, and the objective for 2017 is to achieve 30 percent.

“Of the wild dogs culled by private landholders in 2017 so far, the trapping percentage is 65 percent, and 75 percent were females,” Mr Brown said.

“We are dealing with Australia’s number one predator and whilst we seem to be making progress, the 21 wild dogs culled in the first quarter of 2017 confirms we need to sustain our efforts.”

Marching against Melanoma

By Margie TIERNEY THE words, ‘Hope, Loss, Sadness and Survivor ‘were repeated over and over again at a fundraising dinner for Melanoma Research in Tea Gardens last week.

He’d disagree with the label, ‘Star of the Evening’ but Marathon walker Jay Allen was the reason Mumm’s Restaurant was crowded with supporters of his cause and his courage.

When he walked into Hawks Nest last Thursday, Jay had completed 800 kilometres of his 1200 kilometre Melanoma March from Brisbane to Sydney.

He was foot sore after 19 days on the road, but elated at the amazing support he’d had along the way. ‘’There are people coming out of their houses to say hello, stopping us to give donations, one lady last week was waiting for us by the side of the road, she’d lost her husband the week before to melanoma,” Jay told News Of The Area.

Forty-year-old Jay is one of the lucky ones who survived melanoma after he found a mole on his ankle eight years ago.

“Everyone is going

through so much heartache because of this disease, it’s pulling families apart, and I’m out there walking, it’s the easy part, it’s the least I can do,” Jay said.

Melanoma is the biggest killer of Australians between the ages of 20 and 39.

“We need to get the message out to the younger generation who are out there sunbaking to get a tan, it’s not worth it.”

admits that he couldn’t walk without the support of his fantastic team, including Danielle Ochoa, herself a melanoma survivor.

The mother of three took time out to visit the Tea Gardens Primary School and talk to the children about the five sunsmart rules.

Deliver Fido the poodle to your veterinarian buddy before you go away for two weeks because he clearly loves dogs.

They’ll get the message. And if they don’t, maybe you need to acquaint yourself with some new, more astute, friends.

IT was nice to hear the concern expressed by The Hon. David Gillespie (News of the Area, 23/3) regarding the cost of electricity for consumers in the Lyne Electorate.

I have been corresponding with Mr Gillespie for years on this issue without success, as well as unproductive results recently with both State and Federal leaders.

When questioned about the Supply Access Charge (SAC), we in the Essential Energy area pay around $1.60/day to have the electricity connected.

Those in Ausgrid areas (Newcastle,Sydney,Wollongong) pay around 72c/day.

The replies that I receive from the

Minister for Energy always state that, because the network is over a larger area (4/5 of NSW), maintenance costs are twice as much.

This may be correct as I have been unable to check this fact.

However, other service suppliers are directed to have a uniform cost throughout the state (e.g.NBN/Telstra).

Furthermore, country residents subsidise city residents lifestyle through transport (motorways), entertainment (Opera house), health(hospitals) and tourist facilities (museums/Harbour Bridge etc), yet, when it comes to Electricity and other living expenses , we in the country pay more.

Electricity cost is a hot topic at present mainly with the supply and cost in South Australia.

OPINION Well, we, the residents of country NSW are second in cost to SA, and it’s time for our local members, both State and Federal to stand up for their constituents and do something, rather than just pass the buck on to the relevant Energy Minister for their lip service reply.

If both Federal and State Governments want to overcome increasing house prices and congestion in the cities, decentralise and make costs in the country more affordable and equitable.

We, the residents of country NSW should apply the pressure to State and Federal politicians for a better deal on electricity when we pay more in land rates, water rates, fuel and food.

On Saturday night, a nautically themed dinner/ dance is being held at the Hawks Nest Golf Club with all proceeds going to Alzheimer’s research.

“This event proved very successful last year and tickets are selling fast from the golf club for this year’s

event,” Trevor said.

On Sunday morning the children’s movie ‘Finding Dory’ will be shown in the Community Hall.

Entry will be by a gold coin donation.

New to the Mardi Gras is the Kayak’n’Coffee guided tour on the Myall River.

Tours will leave from Moira Pde near Yamba St, weather permitting.

And to cap off a great weekend, a Baby Boomers live show ‘Blast from The Past’ is being staged in the Community Hall on Sunday afternoon.

Tickets for the “African Queen” and “Blast from the Past” are selling fast from Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens pharmacies.

Organisers of the recent Motorfest weekend are still on a high after their most successful event ever.

ORGANISERS of the recent Motorfest weekend are still on a high after their most successful event ever.

Motor Clubs from Port Stephens and Newcastle joined the 45 clubs which converged on the Yamba Street Oval in Hawks Nest.

“The people came from South East Queensland through to Melbourne, Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Gunnedah and Port Stephens, it was the best ever in terms of the range and diversity of vehicles,” Phil Hoare,

Secretary of the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest Motor Club said.

Last Sunday the Motor Club members gathered at the Rural Fire Station in Tea Gardens for a barbecue lunch and a presentation ceremony for the local beneficiaries.

This year the Motor club had $9,000 in cheques to share between the local Surf Club, the Tea Gardens/ Pindimar Rural Fire Brigade and the Community Bus. “The response from local businesses that provide us with sponsorship was remarkable,” Motor Club Secretary Phil Hoare told

“We only donate to local beneficiaries who don’t get money from the government,” Club President Juergen Seil said.

As for Treasurer Graham Kelly, he’s already looking to next year.

“We had 355 entries this year and there was still room on the oval, so maybe 400 is in sight.”

“We had 70 sponsors who

gave us cash cheques and gift donations.”

As you’d expect the Surf Club, Community Bus and Rural Fire Brigade were thrilled with their donations.

“We’d like an automatic reel on the truck, so you only need one person not three,” the Brigade’s Ranald Mackay said.

“We want to change the fire warning sign on Pindimar Road to a different position so

that everyone sees it.”

Over its 15 year history, Motorfest has given out $105,000 to local not for profit organisations.

“From the feedback we received, everyone had a great time,” Juergen said.

And the good news is Motorfest will be back again in 2018, the date already marked on the calendar, Saturday March 10.

Grey Nomads’ Cup THE Hawks Nest Golf Club is hosting the Annual “ Grey Nomads’ Cup” in conjunction with the Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras on Friday 7 April 2017 as part of Seniors Week Celebrations.

The event will commence at 9am with a shotgun start.

Lady Hawks back Second Season

By Margie TIERNEY THE Lady Hawks Footy Team are about to kick off their second season with 20 eager players and new sponsors on board.

The ladies have had two trial games, coming up trumps again Raymond Terrace last weekend with a 20 to 10 scoreline in their favour.

They also travelled to the Central Coast to play a trial

game in the wind and rain against an experienced Woy Woy side.

“The final score didn’t go the ladies’ way, finishing up 26 to 10,” Coach Ngaire White told News Of The Area.

“The try scorers were Megan Markham and Melissa Pitfield, who also converted her try.” ‘’The ladies were definitely in the game, with the majority playing out the

full 60 minutes.’’ ‘’The coaching staff are excited for the season ahead with nearly no dropped balls in the wet conditions and the completion of sets.’’ ‘’New recruits, Jess, Makayla, Marley and Megan all showed some great skills and slotted in nicely on the field with the support from Amy, Sarah, Christine, Leilani, Taylah, Lee and Mel,” Ngaire said.

“The lack of a bench was the only downfall.”

The Lady Hawks have spent a busy off-season generating new sponsors and plenty of support from the local business community.

The fifth round of the MidWeek Pennants was played today with Tea Gardens Grade 4 side hosting a home

game against the might of the powerful Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.

It was always going to be tough, and it was.

The Tea Gardens team skipped by Mark Hair were well in the game with 6 ends to play but two dropped 4s in three ends put paid to their chances going down 17-25.

Unfortunately the Ron Webster team suffered a similar fate conceding multiples on too many occasions.

They lost 16-24.

The saving grace of the day was the, as yet, unbeaten Greg Pearson team, otherwise known as the “Houdini Four”, who yet again won on the last end.

They picked up a 4 on the last end to win 23-19.

The final score, Tea Gardens 56, Raymond Terrace 68.

24 March In Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs played in overcast conditions, the winners were decided by the highest winning margin plus a countback on ends.

Two Bills, Bill Moon and Bill Thrift, filled the bill to take the money.

The jackpot was not won and stands at $140 next week.

25 March Round 4 of the Newcastle District Saturday Pennant competition was played today with Grades 5 and 6 at home against Fingal Bay and Raymond Terrace respectively.

The success of last week did not transfer across with Grade 5 taking a bit of a pasting going down by 49-72.

Two games were close.

The Keith Smith team were narrowly beaten 16-17, and the Kerry O’Brien team lost 20-24.

The Danny Johnson team took the brunt of the setback losing 13-31.

Grade 6 fared better in their match against Raymond Terrace losing by just 4 shots 49-53.

In the team games, Tea

Gardens managed a draw in two contests.

The Doug Naylor team had a 16 -16 draw and Ron Webster’s team a 17-17 draw.

The four shots were conceded by the Max Stephens combination going down 16-20.

The good news of the week was the great win by the Mighty Dolphins Grade 3 side who, at this stage of the competition, have swept all before them winning again at Hamilton North 55-50.

26 March There were not enough Sunday bowlers to make a quorum today but those that did turn up enjoyed a game among themselves.

With the forecast of fine weather for the foreseeable future, Sunday bowls is definitely on.

The delayed first round of the Club Major Pairs was played today with some interesting results.

Ian Baker and John Younghusband made a great comeback to win 22-20 over Barry Drayton and Ron Webster.

Greg Pearson and Scott Beaumont had too many aces for Luke Gliwa and Stewart Sturrock winning 31-10.

Brian Emmett and Col Farugia had a comprehensive win over Noel Jackson and Keith Smith 22-10.

Steve Jones and Paul Syron had a similar win over Peter Gurney and Alan Greenhalgh 26-12.

Daryl Martin and Col Amos overcame Geoffrey Muggleton and Doug Naylor 26-17.

In a cracker of a game Jeff Baker and Steve Pell held off the might of the Sean Mearrick, Richard Lee combination to win 25-17.

Tom Parkinson and Bill Thrift had too much experience for Vic Garlick and Col Saillard, winning 267.

Merv Mills and Ross Barry had a bye and will progress to the next round unchallenged.

Important Public Notice Wild Dog and Fox Control The NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) in cooperation with the Bulahdelah and District Wild Dog Control Group, NSW Forestry Corp, MidCoast Council and the Hunter Local Land Services will be undertaking an annual 1080 wild dog/fox baiting and trapping program within Myall Lakes and Ghin-doo-ee National Park. The control program will use a combination of 1080 ejectors and trapping methods.

The 1080 program will take place from Friday 20 March 2017 to Monday 1 May 2017.

The use of 1080 ejector baits and trapping techniques are being conducted as part of a broader dog and fox control program, to lessen the potential impacts on neighbouring property and biodiversity values.

Warning signs will be erected on the main access tracks where the baiting is undertaken.

All neighbours and people using the parks are reminded domestics pets are not permitted in National Parks.
