By Daniel SAHYOUN A HAIL storm enroute to Bulahdelah last week did not dampen MidCoast Council ’s spirits at the latest community update meeting.

On the agenda was the development of Council’s strategic plan, infrastructure backlog and community priorities.

General Manager Glenn Handford justified the rate rise saying, “You can’t go to the government with your begging bowl all the time and just say give us a handout.”

Council has applied for a $50 million loan to address the backlog, and have requested the State Government match it dollar for dollar.

If successful, the rate rise will be used to pay back the low interest loan.

A MAN has been charged after allegedly leaving the scene of a fatal crash near Bulahdelah earlier this month.

Emergency services were called to Wootton Way at Wootton, about 20km north of Bulahdelah, about 6am on Sunday 15 October

2017, after a car left the road and hit a tree.

The passenger, a 37-year-old man, died at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle allegedly fled the scene before police arrived.

Officers from Lake Macquarie Local Area

Command commenced inquiries into the crash and conducted extensive searches for the driver.

Following inquiries, police stopped a vehicle on The Esplanade at Warners Bay just after 7pm last Saturday (Saturday 28 October 2017).

The 39-year-old driver was arrested and taken to Belmont Police Station where he was

“We are investigating if we can move the Council into one building, but at present, there is so much funding required for roads and bridges,” he said.

“We feel it is more important to look at the structures and get those fixed first.”

It was on a Friday afternoon in early January last year when Ashleigh’s life and those of many others, were changed forever, when four young men were swept out to sea at Bennetts Beach in Hawks Nest.

The four were in water up to their waist, when the sand bank they were standing on collapsed.

The group was immediately caught in a vicious rip.

A witness to their plight ran 800 metres to where Ashleigh was on patrol as a lifeguard.

The girl from Tea Gardens didn’t hesitate.

She grabbed her rescue paddle board and headed out.

A PINK fundraising event was held at Bulahdelah tennis club last weekend in support of breast cancer research.

Players volleyed at the nets in all things pink with plenty of laughs heard around the courts.

Raffles, competitions and a pink morning tea were also added to the day of fun for the serious cause.

“Breast cancer affects too many people,” event organiser Meredith Rae told News Of The Area.

“It is in everybody’s lives, either directly or through friends or family.”

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) said one in eight women in Australia will

And again Ashleigh went back into the wild surf, desperately searching for the last of the four, 20 year old Timothy O’Brien who’d been on holidays with his three mates from Sydney.

She kept searching until police and emergency services arrived and she herself needed to be treated for hypothermia and exhaustion.

Tragically, young Timothy’s body was eventually found a few days later.

Just last month, 22 year old Ashleigh travelled to Government House in Sydney to be awarded a Silver Medal by the Royal Humane Society of NSW in recognition of her heroic rescue at Bennett’s Beach.

Ashleigh said, “It was a very humbling experience meeting all the other

medal recipients.”

“I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of all the Emergency Services that attended on the day along with Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest SLSC, Australian Lifeguard Services and a very special mention to Sergeant Geoff Farmer for all his support following the incident.”

When asked about her award Sgt Farmer said, “If it wasn’t for her extreme courage in perilous conditions, the other two young men would certainly have been lost.”

“I’ve also nominated her in the Australian Honours System.”

To this day, the families of all involved, remain in contact.

Ashleigh, who finished her degree at Newcastle University last year is now working as a Primary School Teacher in Mackay in Queensland.

Munro v Wilmar Australia Pty Ltd [2017] FWC 2493 is a recent decision of the FWC (“FWC”) which has held that where an employee fails to provide details of their additional employment to their employer, it may constitute a valid reason for dismissal.

Specifically, the case involved an employee (Munro), who was conducting his own business alongside his ordinary employment.

The employer (Wilmar) was concerned that the amount of hours being worked in total by Munro might be a risk to both his health and safety and to his co-workers.

Wilmar requested that Munro submit weekly timesheets indicating the time spent working for his own business.

It submitted that this was to allow Wilmar to monitor fatigue. Munro argued that providing this information

on an ongoing basis was unworkable and would cause extreme hardship.

The Commission held that Wilmar’s request was entirely reasonable and not excessive as Wilmar has a duty of care to ensure that its employees were not unduly fatigued. It was found that the information was sought for a legitimate purpose and the failure to provide the information was considered to be a valid reason for dismissal.

This case highlights that if you are an employee working multiple jobs and your employer requests you provide details of your additional employment you should consider providing this information to your employer. If the request is reasonable and for a legitimate purpose, a refusal to comply may be a valid reason for termination.

BULAHDELAH Central School was awash with red last week for the annual ‘Day for Daniel’, the country’s largest child safety awareness event.

Senior Constable Trevor McLeod was on hand to talk to the students about stranger danger and strategies for staying safe in the community.

“We were reminded not to talk to people we don’t know,” Year 2 student Salome Reitsma said.

“We also learnt if you feel uncomfortable to walk away and go to the nearest place where you feel safe,”

classmate Grace McRae added.

The children also took part in Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson by tuning in for a live broadcast from the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.

“The day focuses on keeping kids safe and making sure everyone is aware that there are dangers out there,” organising teacher Angie Vella said.

“It is about empowering children to recognise, react and report if they feel that something is not quite right.”

The Foundation was established by Bruce and

Denise Morcombe in 2005, two years after their son Daniel was abducted and murdered while waiting to catch a bus on the Sunshine Coast.

The colour theme of the national child protection day is red, the colour Daniel was wearing the day he went missing.

“The Foundation is getting stronger every year and it is great to be involved in promoting a safer community for children,” Ms Vella said.

Bulahdelah was one of around 2,700 schools nationwide who took part in this year’s child safety event.

The Jacaranda Spring Festival is coming up fast, with organisers releasing an exciting, jam-packed program for this weekend.

The event will be held across three venuesJacaranda Avenue, Rectory Homestead and Raymond Terrace Bowling Club auditorium.

The festival will be opened at 10am by Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer, and an Indigenou welcoming ceremony will be performed by Tarryn Roche to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land.

A series of performances will entertain the crowds, including Thou Walla drumming group, Dance Extreme, United Dance, Dance of life Belly dancing, Mei Walker cultural dance, Celtic choir and harp, Zumba with Belinda and Shane and the Raduga Trio.

The Raymond Terrace Bowling Club auditorium will host the Irish dancersVoyage of Irish dance and the Raymond Terrace has Talent contest (ages 7-18yrs).

Jacaranda Avenue will showcase the Gym 21 display, roving belly dancers and free twisted animals by The Balloon Guy. Workshops will be running all day with Drumming on Jacaranda Avenue, Soul Fire Circus skills on the Rectory Grounds and a Dream catcher workshop, Photogram workshop and Art heroes workshop on Jacaranda Avenue.

Jumping Castle and Face painting will be in the Rectory Grounds, and there’ll be clowns and other amusement rides on Jacaranda Avenue.

Liz Murray told News Of The Area, “This festival is so strongly about engaging the community.”

“Come and enjoy live performances, junior talent quest, workshops and stalls along with some historical information, charm and comfort of the 1800s rectory.”

“See our avenue in full flower, a community event in Jacaranda Avenue, the historic rectory and Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.”

Oyster and Timber Festival Fun

Crowds were a little down in number compared to previous years, but not spirits.

But of course one of the highlights of the festival every year is the oyster eating competition.

Sponsored by Cole Brothers, it’s a case of who can eat dozens of oysters in the quickest time.

After some fierce competition in the heats, Steve Carter from Raymond Terrace took out the top oyster eater gong, downing two dozen oysters in double quick time.

For his efforts, a $1,000 voucher donated by the Karuah Big 4 Caravan Park.

Steve was a very happy camper.

Remembrance Day is a nationally recognised

day of commemoration when we pause for one minute of silence at 11.00am to remember the service men and women who gave their lives in wars, conflicts and peace operations.

We encourage the community to participate

in the service and pause to reflect on the service and sacrifice of more than 102,000 Australians.

TEA GARDENS put on a superb day for the annual Myall River Festival last Saturday.

Months in the planning, the crowds responded, packing the foreshore along Marine Drive from early morning.

There was plenty to see and do, from perusing the dozens of stalls which lined the waterfront to heading into the Dolphin Room at the Tea Gardens Hotel to grab a bargain courtesy of ‘Buy My Wardrobe’.

“We can’t believe it, it’s fantastic there are so many people and so many clothes,” Leslie Lane from ‘Buy My Wardrobe’ told News Of The Area.

The women running the second hand clothes emporium were run off their feet but delighted with the turnout, all money raised going to ‘Harry’s House’ in Stockton, a home away from home for children undergoing cancer treatment.

Again it was a very successful fund-raiser with generous donations from our Men and Lady golfers together with the proceeds of a lively “mad” auction and raffle ticket sales.

In other news: Nominations are open for a big money event coming up on Wednesday 15 November.

RSL Life Care is sponsoring a men’s Versatility tournament.

The field will be limited to 14 teams of 4 players, maximum.

It will be a condition of play that only 1 player is allowed above Pennant Grade 5 level per team (ie 4,3,2 or 1).

Players are advised to nominate early for this tournament as it will fill quickly.

Dolphin Day is an important event in the Tea Gardens bowling calendar.

This year it will be held on 27 November commencing with a memorial at 11.00 am and then followed by a barbeque lunch.

A challenge has been thrown down to the Women’s Bowling Club to contest a Shirts v Skirts match thereafter.

I have lost my contact with the Sunday Mixed Bowls.

I know they played last week with a great field and they played again this Sunday but I have no results. I hope to have this rectified next week.

The winners with the highest score were Dale Winter’s team. The winner in the Open Consistency Competition is the first bowler to score 150 shots regardless of ends. The semi final draw was Kayelene Pearson v Karen Green on Rink 1 and Robyn Beaumont and Carol Hayden on Rink 2.

Kayelene went out strongly in her game leading by 24 shots on the 15th end but Karen just kept “giving it her best shot” and equalised the score on the 22nd end 110 all. Five ends later the score remained equal 130 then Karen gained 7 shots resulting in a 4 shot lead for her on the 27th end.

Kayelene, giving her a 2 shot advantage, 29th end 6 more for Kayelene, 147 v Karen 143. On the 30th end Karen managed to score a massive 9 points. Karen 152 v Kayelene 148.An impressive finish to a nail biting game. The other game saw Robyn holding the lead from start to finish.

Despite Carol sending down some great shots and on some ends scoring 8 and 7, Robyn’s lead proved unattainable.

The game was over on the 26th end Robyn 156 v Carol 104. Fabulous bowling by all competitors, a pleasure to watch.

Thursday 26th October: Social bowls, 2 games of Pairs 18 ends, and of course the final of the Open Consistency Competition. Bette Saillard and Deyonne Page defeated Lynda Richards 20 v 14.

A “neck to neck” battle commenced 65 all at the completion of the 13th end. On the 15th end Robyn scored the maximum 10 shots, with gave her a lead of 12 shots. Karen delivered some great bowls but some how Robyn managed to out bowl her, scoring another 10 shots on the 22nd end. The 26th end resulted in Robyn reaching the magic 150 mark, Karen reached 110. A wonderful display of “consistent bowling” ladies.

Following the final, players and club members enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by the Social Committee. A big thank you to all those who umpired, marked, acted as the Controlling Body and to our Social Committee without people pitching in to help at this type of event they would never happen. A “pat on the back” to all concerned.

THE sixth round of the 2017 Short Course Championship held at Bulahdelah Golf Club last weekend attracted almost 70 competitors from around the region.

In near-perfect conditions, play began with a shotgun start over nine holes with each of the eight teams completing the course twice throughout the day.

Event organiser, Barbie Gordon, said the competitors came from Karuah and Harrington, and everywhere in between.

“This contest is run in conjunction with other 9-hole courses in the Mid North

Coast Region to encourage the smaller clubs to play on the courses,” Barbie said.

“Each team is made up of players who have about the same handicap, so within the teams there is also a competition to see who is best.”

The competition came down to a three-hole playoff with Toby Carroll from Bulahdelah recording the best gross score to win the title.

Gary O’Brien from Karuah was a close runner-up.

The teams from Karuah were in top form, also taking the wins in the A grade, B grade and C grade categories.

President John Hooper said the competition is a “great social day” which brings players from across the region together.

“It was a very good day, the course is about as good as it can be, and we thank the players and all the businesses that sponsored the event,” he said.

“We look forward to seeing you all next year.”

The 2017 Short Course Championships are played over nine courses including Stroud, Karuah, Krambach and Wingham.

The final round will be played at Patterson on 11 November.
