Local Phil Hoare has taken his love of cars and joined MOST of us drive, but some of forces with other enthusiasts us have a real passion for the to become the backbone of the annual Motorfest event in motor car and its history.

15 years down the road Motorfest is expected to attract hundreds of cars and motor enthusiasts to the Myall Sports Oval in Hawks Nest on Saturday 11 March.

There’ll be vintage, veteran, classic and unique cars on show as well as motorcycles all in pristine condition.

But it’s not only motors on display.

The Fire Brigade and Surf Club will be on hand to show off their latest vehicles and equipment.

There’ll be plenty to eat and drink thanks to the Red Cross, Rural Fire Brigade and local

about the history of this area,” he said.

The Bulahdelah Courthouse Museum is open every Saturday from 9am to 3pm and at other times by appointment.

Jay is one of the lucky survivors.

The Myall Coast’s involvement in Jay’s journey began just over a week ago when local Margie Haseltine emailed First National’s Property Manager Kaye Simpson offering her apartment free of charge to Jay and his support crew when they arrive in Tea Gardens on Thursday 23 March.

Kaye Simpson picked up the ball and ran with it.

She spoke to Jenna Fidden from Mumm’s Restaurant in Tea Gardens and Jenna quickly came on board offering Jay and his crew a free dinner.

But the wheels kept on turning and Jenna decided a fundraising dinner was

in order.

Mumm’s has now put together a special three course dinner @ $50 per person.

There will be ‘lucky door prizes’, raffles and donated bottles of wine with all proceeds going to the Melanoma Institute of Australia.

Bookings are essential.

Jay says he’s been overwhelmed by the response.

“The generosity of the people out there has been quite amazing.”

Melanoma is the number one cancer killer of Australians aged 20 to 39.

Jay has been training nearly every day for the past two years for his “Longest Melanoma March”.

“This will undoubtedly push me to the limits physically, but every step I take will be in memory of those who have died from melanoma and those who are currently fighting this disease,” Jay said.

THE Bulahdelah Historical Society recently acquired a vintage StrombergCarlson radio, believed to have been used during World War II. The antique radio was originally purchased by the late Merv Richards, a founding member of the Historical Society, at an auction following the war.

Merv’s daughter Barbara Saville, who donated the radio to the Society last week, said it had been used at the old Central Garage in Stroud Street for many years.

“It sat on the counter for 45 years before it was put into storage,” Mrs

Saville said.

“Our family has a strong link to Bulahdelah so we wanted the radio to remain in the local area.”

Historical Society President Kevin Carter said the item was a welcome addition to the Society’s collection.

“Many locals have contributed to our displays, and the radio will become part of our war collection,” he said.

The Society’s collections are housed in the Courthouse Museum which dates back to 1888.

Mr Carter said the courthouse ceased functioning in 1973 with the Historical Society taking over the building in 1985.

GREAT Lakes Nursing Home staff celebrated 25 years of serving the local community at a recent reunion held at Bulahdelah Bowling Club.

More than 80 past and present staff members and their partners, including some who had travelled from as far away as Queensland, came together for a night of celebration, reminiscing and laughter.

Staff took a trip down memory lane as they viewed photographs from the past, including many of the residents whom they had cared for over the years.

Live music and dancing during the evening ensured the party continued into the

organised to simply mark the occasion of the facility being 25 years old.

“It allowed everyone to get back together and discuss stories, and talk about what they are doing in their lives,” she said.

Speeches during the formal part of the evening highlighted the dedication of the staff and the enjoyable and supportive working environment.

The celebrations continued with a reunion cake cut by Mrs Freihaut and

former Director of Nursing Debe Brassey.

As the evening progressed, the reunion showed that the spirit of togetherness amongst the staff, both young and old and past and present, was still going strong.

The Great Lakes Aged Care facility opened in Bulahdelah on 9 December, 1991.

An All-Star Field

By Daniel SAHYOUN A GROUP of Myall Coast teens recently performed with the Bloodline Sistas Koori Dance Group at the All-Stars Rugby League competition held in Newcastle.

The week-long event, which celebrated Rugby League’s commitment to Indigenous Australia, concluded with the Indigenous All Stars versus the World All Stars match at McDonald Jones Stadium.

The Bloodline Sistas took to the field in front of a packed stadium to proudly welcome the players onto the Traditional Lands through dance and song.

Karuah dancer Leah Slockee, who was dancing with the group for the first time, said she thoroughly enjoyed the performance which was a celebration of her culture.

experience and a whole lot of fun, it was so good being involved in an event alongside so many talented people,” Leah said.

“Learning traditional dances and being able to share them with such a large audience was definitely one of the highlights.”

The night kicked off with an awe-inspiring Indigenous war cry led by Greg Inglis, setting the tone for the All Stars matches.

The dance group cheered the men’s and women’s Indigenous teams who easily defeated the World All Stars in both games.

Leah told News Of The Area it was inspiring to watch the Indigenous teams during the competition games.

Under the direction of Physical Education teachers Brian Belic and Bob McCann, the program, known as the BAR Group, allows the students to release excess energy, resulting in improved classroom performance.

“It’s about giving the kids an opportunity to burn up a bit of energy so when they go back to class afterwards they are calmer and quieter,” Mr Belic said.

“Since the program began, there have been many

program where the boys burn their energy through weight training, and using other gym equipment including treadmills, exercise bikes and rowing machines.

Year 8 student Ben Saunders said he always looks forward to the workout.

“After sitting in class for two lessons, I really feel like I need to use up some energy,” he said.

“The physical challenges are really good and wear me out, so I feel a lot more relaxed

and it gets me through the next lot of lessons.”

Ben told News Of The Area since joining the group,

he is completing his class work more efficiently and his negative behaviour incidents have diminished.

“Socially, the boys from different year groups have formed friendships and now have the ability to mix with kids they probably wouldn’t have been able to mix with before,” he said.

“It’s also given them a sense of ownership, there’s a place within the school they feel responsible for, and are now willing to speak up if they see people not doing the right thing.”

The BAR Group includes boys from Years 8 to 11 and takes place in the school’s fitness centre.

BULAHDELAH POLICE REPORT

Drink-drivers caught LOCAL Police recently took part in the Statewide Operation Drink Drive 1, targeting alcohol related driving offences.

In Bulahdelah, three people were arrested and charged for various drink-driving incidents during the two-day blitz, which commenced on 18 February.

A 17-year-old female and an 18-year-old male were each charged with driving with a special range prescribed concentration of alcohol (PCA).

The male, a learner driver, was further charged with driving without an authorised accompanying person.

Police report a 19-year-old man, who returned a positive reading for a low range PCA, was also charged in Bulahdelah.

Statewide, 230 drivers were charged with drinkdriving offences during the operation.

Acting Commander of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy, said he is alarmed at the number of people caught.

“There are too many people putting their own and others’ lives at risk,” he said.

“Drink driving is not only killing people behind the wheel, it is killing passengers and other innocent roadusers.”

Assistant Commissioner Corboy said with 43 lives lost on the roads this year, people need to start taking responsibility for their actions.

“If you drink and drive you will be caught,” he said.

A total of 127,254 breath tests were conducted by NSW Police during the operation.

THE Pacific Highway south of Bulahdelah was partially blocked after a heavy vehicle collided with safety barriers at about 3am on 22 February.

The B-double vehicle carrying refrigerated goods was travelling in the northbound lane of the highway near Booral Road at the time of the collision.

According to the police report, the driver alleges a VT Commodore pulled in front of the truck abruptly, causing him to take

evasive action to avoid colliding with the car.

As a result, the heavy vehicle then collided with a barrier wire, railing and the concrete side of a bridge before stopping about 270 metres further north.

Traffic disruptions were encountered well into the day whilst the vehicle and trailers were recovered.

No injuries were reported.

A TEENAGE boy has been charged over a fire which totally destroyed the office area at a sawmill in Bulahdelah.

The blaze, which occurred on 24 December, 2016, also caused considerable damage and disruption to the mill and its vehicles.

Following investigations, the 15-year-old boy was arrested and interviewed by police on 24 February.

He was charged with

“destroying property in company by the use of fire”.

The boy was granted conditional bail to appear at Forster Children’s Court in March.

Police report inquiries into other persons, and other aspects of the fire are continuing.

Further charges are expected to be laid in the near future.

Rabbit Virus Roll Out

OWNERS of pet rabbits as well as breeders are being urged to vaccinate their animals as soon as possible, following the release this week of a virus into Australia’s wild rabbit population.

It will be the first time in more than 20 years that a new rabbit biocontrol agent has been launched in every State and Territory.

Farmers and environmental groups in more than 600 sites have been issued with the necessary kits to rollout the RHDV-K5 Korean strain of the Calicivirus.

Veterinary Locum George Dellar has been in practice for nearly 40 years and says it’s essential pet rabbits, especially kittens are vaccinated against the virus.

The Australian Veterinary Association recommends that kittens be vaccinated at 4, 8,

and 12 weeks of age then six monthly for life.

Adult rabbits need two vaccinations a month apart, then six monthly for life.

Land managers have been laying out carrot and oat baits in a bid to ‘train’ wild rabbits to accept the baits.

Researchers believe this latest biological control will reduce the overall feral rabbit population by about 20 percent.

The RHDV1K5 virus is very easily spread, by direct and indirect handling, through clothing, shoes, grass and insects.

However it’s not believed to cause disease in any other Australian animal species.

IN a tradition dating back more than 40 years, seven local workers and volunteers have been recognised by Rotary at their Annual Pride in Workmanship Awards held at Hawks Nest Golf Club.

Volunteer Merv Nagel was recognised for his 25 years of devoted service to Tea Gardens Primary School.

“Our school would not

be the same without Merv in it,” Principal Mark Clemson said.

Bar attendant and supervisor, Thomas King, received his award for his enthusiasm and dedication to his work at the Hawks Nest Golf Club.

Educator Laura Blatch was recognised for her outstanding contribution to the children of Karuah Public School.

Peter Plain was awarded for his 40 years of volunteer service to the Rural Fire Service.

Library Assistant Di Vercoe was recognised for her 20 years of help and dedication to the Tea Gardens Library.

And employees Ursula Roberts and David Shultz received their awards for their work as receptionist and gardener at Peter

Sinclair Gardens.

‘Pride of Workmanship’ was launched as a Rotary project way back in 1975.

“The aim is to encourage a much-needed pride in personal performance in the workplace, and to help create a national attitude for the benefit of our country,” Rotary’s Ian MackenzieSmith said.

“Pride of Workmanship is not a competition and there are no winners.”

“It is a recognition of individual achievement and commitment.”

Last week I returned to my car and there was a shopping trolley wedged against my door. Now my car has a dent in it. What is wrong with people?

Mrs HP, Salamander Bay YOU know, HP, this is one of my bugbears.

It is to do with sheep or, more specifically, people behaving like sheep.

There are clearly marked trolley bays at Salamander Shopping Centre, and very helpful trolley collectors who will happily take your trolley before you’ve even finished emptying it.

Why, then, do shoppers insist on leaving them in between cars, or else parked amongst the very minimal vegetation?

Do they think their trolley will sprout baby trolleys if left in the dirt?

Then there are people who try to shove their Woolies trolley into the Aldi bay or their Coles trolley into the library book shute. Sheer insanity, HP. How about the patrons who balance their trolley against a pole, knowing full well that it’ll slide down the path and into a Mitsubishi with just the hint of a breeze.

You need to park your car as far away from other cars as possible.

This drives my family members out of their minds.

They have been known to exit my moving vehicle because it takes me so long to select an appropriate car space.

In the Swim

Bulahdelah Central School Primary Swim Carnival

WITH extreme weather conditions forecast (and endured) our Primary Swimming Carnival was postponed, until cooler and more suitable weather arrived.

The 2017 Primary Swimming Carnival was held last Wednesday under excellent weather conditions for swimming.

This year we had great support from a large number of available staff in attendance and a pleasing number of parents and

family cheering on students.

The day was a terrific event for students in our annual swimming event with many excited students demonstrating positive participation and determination in racing events.

Students enjoyed opportunities for free-swim sessions and novelty events led by Miss Mostyn and staff.

This year newlyelected House Captains had organised and led entertaining and animated

House ‘war-cries’.

Competitive points were awarded for House ‘warcries’ and students enjoyed the carnival atmosphere.

This year each sports house area looked terrific with decorations and banners.

Sports house, Melba, was the overall winner on the day.

Individual race winners who were congratulated at the conclusion of the carnival were presented with ribbons at today’s Primary Assembly.

Belly Flops and Swimming Sensations AFTER a cancellation due to extreme heat, the Secondary Swimming Carnival was held on Monday, 13 February.

The day began with a continuous swim which got all students enthused and motivated to contribute to their house point score.

The racing then began, with freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke events being contested in all age groups.

It was pleasing to see the high number of competitors in events, especially in the junior age groups.

students showing some interesting techniques in the three noodle race and house teams showing ingenuity in the “Floating Team Pile” (the winning team managed to stack 10 students onto the floating piece of toast).

The “Belly Flop competition” revealed the skills of a number of students and teachers and it was sad to see “Helga the Viking” (AKA Miss Moncrieff) relinquish her 2016 title, after a disappointing second attempt.

The day ended with some hotly contested and very exciting relay events which

ultimately determined the overall winning house.

Congratulations to all students who attended and for their participation and excellent behaviour.

Thanks also to all staff who ensured a smoothly run and enjoyable day. It was also pleasing to see the staff relay team continue their 10 year unbeaten record, thrashing a disappointing Year 12 team by a considerable distance.

Deft touch leads to win Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

22 February A REALLY packed agenda today, only having the one green in play, with the usual Wednesday Gala bowls being played early to make way for the first game of the 2017 Newcastle District Mid-week Pennant matches to follow.

No one could complain too much about the fine and mild playing conditions, with the possible exception of the Grade 4 Pennant players who had to contend with a blustery North-Easterly sea breeze, springing up just before play commenced, making their playing conditions difficult.

Player numbers were down as many were committed to the Grade 4 Pennant side.

Nonetheless, 32 bowlers competed in the Fours format with 20 points being awarded for a win and one point for each end won.

The winners for the day were Brian McPhee, Doug Andrews, Col Amos and Ron Green.

They were followed by Paul Goodwin, Henry Dallas, new member, Bill Bridges and Garry Melrose.

In the Grade 4 Midweek Pennant Game, Tea Gardens took on a side from the Carrington Bowling Club at home.

It was a great opening game with Tea Gardens winning two out of the three matches.

Greg Pearson’s team, after a slow start, eventually clicked into gear and won comprehensively 34-14.

The Danny Johnson team, in contrast, revelled in the conditions and raced away leading 15-1 in the early stages. It was not until the 14th end that Carrington made an emphatic comeback winning 7 out of the last 8 ends.

Tea Gardens had enough points to see them home winners 26-23.

In the remaining game the “sleepy time down south syndrome” also hit the Mark Hair team.

They led comfortably at the 13th end 13-6 but really capitulated on the 20th end dropping a 6 to see Carrington take the lead for the first time in the match.

Carrington won the last end to win the match 20-17.

The final score saw the Tea Gardens side taking the match 77-57.

Next week the Tea Gardens mid-week side traveled to North Lambton to play at the Water Board Bowling Club.

In Sunday Bowls today, players enjoyed the cooler, overcast conditions.

The winners were Dot Montgomery and Col Saillard.

In the semi-finals of the Club Minor Singles Championship played today, Doug Naylor surged into another final with a brilliant display of draw bowling. He halted Luke Gliwa’s chances with a resounding win, 31-10.

In the remaining game it took the man with the “deft touch” Peter Gurney 37 ends to stave-off a determined challenge from Ken Devlin.

BOWLING This was a high quality game that was thoroughly enjoyed by the large gallery in attendance.

Peter eventually won 3124. Great game gentlemen!

It will be an all Palm Lake final next Sunday when residents Peter Gurney, finalist last year, and Doug Naylor compete for the trophy.

THERE was a good turn up of players for social bowls on Tuesday 21 February.

A few returning now that the weather conditions are slightly cooler combined with the earlier start makes bowling in summer slightly more bearable.

The format for play was two games of triples and two games of fours.

The winners decided by gaining four points for the win plus ends were Dianne Kiss, Karen McPhie and Elizabeth Kelly.

After the game everyone joined in to wish Verlie Gray a happy birthday.

It is hard to believe that young Verlie turned 80 on the 15 February.
