By Mitch LEES AS the saga of the “Swedish Sauna” of Tea Gardens continues, Port Stephens MP Kate Washington was joined by the NSW Shadow Minister for Police and Counter Terrorism, Lynda Voltz MP to launch a petition to have the debacle heard in State Parliment.

Ms Washington is urging all permanent residents as well as part-time residents and frequent visitors to get behind the push to have an Official Address of the costings and due processes at Macquarie Street.

“As we all know the community was promised a million dollar upgrade to their Police Station, and what they got in return was a Swedish Sauna with no windows,” said Ms Washington.

“Rightly it’s been met with a lot of disgust by the community and the Police Association themselves who say it’s not fit for purpose.”

Clinic Bus is back helping those in need

AFTER temporarily ceasing services on 25 February due to the COVID19 pandemic, the Free Clinic Bus will resume services on 1 July.

The decision was made to recommence operations on 15 June by the Free Clinic Bus committee and the bus will be operating in line with COVID19 restrictions.

Jan Peeters, a volunteer and Wife of the committee President Ray Peeters, told News of The Area, “It will only carry two passengers at a time, who will be asked a series of questions regarding health and overseas travel and the bus will be sanitised each day.”

The bus operates on Tuesdays transporting patients to Raymond Terrace and Maitland.

It also operates Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays transporting patients to Raymond Terrace and Newcastle.

Pick up can be arranged from homes in Tea Gardens,

Hawks Nest, North Arm Cove, Bundabah, Pindimar and Karuah.

The service is available to all and being a pensioner is not a requirement.

Mrs Peeters told News of The Area, “The Bus is used for lots of appointments to the eye hospital as people can’t drive after appointments.”

“Also to the Mater Hospital for radio and chemo treatments.”

“Often it’s elderly people visiting a spouse who don’t drive or don’t have the confidence to drive out of the local area.”

“It can be used by people on restricted licences and people who can’t walk a long way after trying to find a parking space.”

“This is a door to door service.”

The Free Clinic Bus is a charity service that has been operating since 1985 and is funded by local organisations and clubs.

It is run entirely by volunteers.

John Verdon of Hawks Nest, volunteer driver of twenty- seven years

Two Stabbed at Hawks Nest Home Invasion Officers attended and established a crime scene - Calling for any Information

POLICE are appealing for information after two men were stabbed during a home invasion at Hawks Nest earlier this week.

At about 10.30pm (Monday 30 June), a 78-yearold man opened the door of his home on Booner Street and was confronted by three unknown men.

The group pushed past the man, assaulting him and stabbing him in the abdomen.

Police have been told

the group went upstairs and began assaulting a 53-yearold man.

While attempting to flee, the man was stabbed in the back.

He continued to run from the attackers and was stabbed a further seven times to the back and neck.

The men stole a purse and car keys from a 40-yearold woman, before fleeing the scene on foot.

Emergency services were called, where one

man was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics before being flown to John Hunter Hospital, in a stable condition.

The other man was driven to John Hunter Hospital suffering a stab wound and head injuries. He is in a stable condition.

Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended and established a crime scene.

Investigations are continuing.

Most parents like to treat their children equally both before and after death.

However, care must be taken when the Will is made if it is intended to give specific assets to the children. For example, if there are three children and the parents own three properties being their own home, a holiday home and an investment property all worth roughly the same amount, the parents may be tempted (on the death of the second of them) to leave a property to each of the children. The principal place of residence, if sold within two years of the date of death, will be exempt from capital gains tax. The holiday home, if sold and if purchased after September 1985, will be subject to capital gains tax.

The deductions to be taken into consideration will vary depending upon whether the property has been holiday let or not. The investment

property will also be subject to capital gains tax. If the investment property has been depreciated, it can happen that the deductions for depreciation are added back for the purpose of calculating capital gains tax.

It can create a dilemma for parents particularly if one child would really like to receive the holiday home and another child would really like to receive the principal place of residence. There are ways of drafting the Will to avoid any inequality occurring. A similar situation can arise of leaving shares in listed companies to one child and a property to another. It is important to receive detailed and well thought out legal advice to ensure the Will maker’s wishes are satisfied when making a Will.

By Sandra MURRAY THE local Tea Gardens Lions Club met for the first time since COVID-19 social distancing came into effect,

with all members attending to hear the President’s Annual Report and to acknowledge the outgoing and incoming Boards.

This was the 52nd Annual Changeover Dinner

for the Club and included attendance by the District Governor, Inga Kasch, who toasted the leadership of the 2019-20 Lions Club Board and welcomed the 2020-21 Board members.

The Board members are Peter Webb (President), Helen Watkins (First Vice President), Robert Dorman (Second Vice President), Leone Webb (Secretary), Annette Cook (Assistant Secretary), Linda Allen (Treasurer) and John Boyton (Membership Officer).

The District Governor also welcomed two new members, Amanda Sykes and Shirley Darch, increasing overall membership to a healthy 35.

Inga Kasch stated that, “It is important for members to embrace current challenges to create a positive future.

The Tea Gardens Lions club is continuing to ensure that we all have a better place to live.”

Incumbent and incoming President Peter Webb delivered his first annual report stating, “Our members bring fresh ideas

and enthusiasm. Over the last financial year and despite COVID-19, the club held fifteen BBQs, a Fashion Show, sold calendars, and held raffles all to raise $12,500 plus $4,500 was donated for bushfire aid.

The Club donated $18,500 across 21 local, national, and international causes including our school and aged care homes, for a mobility scooter, eyesight programs, and diabetes awareness. The Club is also identifying local projects that improve our area. To date, these include upgrading the Winda Woppa walkway, maintaining the Lions Park, and providing BBQ catering for local clubs, markets, and events. Please continue to contribute and apply your efforts and talents in the coming year so that the purposes of Lions can be achieved. This includes encouraging serviceminded people to serve

their community.”

During COVID-19 restrictions, isolated members started writing and sharing their life stories online building stronger friendships that will underpin future successful fundraising and social activities.

The event was held at Mumm’s on the Myall and was a warm winter feast featuring local seafood chowder, glazed pork belly and a delicious chocolate mousse.

The restaurant staff were wonderful and welcoming, upholding strict hygiene and distancing protocols.

Lions Club's next event is a business meeting starting 6.30pm on 21 July at the Hawks Nest Golf Club.

Fast Track Approval System for Development MIDCOAST Council will roll out a fast track approval system for minor and small scale development applications, following a successful trial over recent months.

Council approved the fast track system for implementation this week, after reviewing the results of the trial which ran for a 12 week period earlier this year. During the trial 79 applications were assessed with an average approval time of eight business days.

Fast track application development types include low impact proposals such as single storey dwellings, garages, sheds, carports and swimming pools.

“The fast track system has been tailored and resourced to ensure shorter assessment and turnaround times are delivered for these small scale DAs,” said Council’s Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell.

To be considered as a fast track application, proposals need to be straightforward, comply with Council’s LEP and DCP provisions, not require neighbour notification under the community participation plan or internal referral to other sections of Council or external agencies, and be on sites that are not significantly constrained.

“Dedicated officers for fast track applications

provide a direct point of contact for customers, particularly high-volume repeat customers, such as project home builders, shed and swimming pool builders, enhancing customer experience,” added Mr De Szell.

The fast track system also allows for the related Construction Certificate application to be lodged at the same time as the DA, to have both applications assessed and determined concurrently.

“The provisions allow for a one-stop shop for fast track development that meets the requirements, and will significantly speed up approvals for minor and small scale developments across the MidCoast,” said Mr De Szell.

Myall Coast Radio $6,250 of seed funding

By Ashley CHRYSLER MIDCOAST Council has unanimously agreed on funding areas for their annual Community Donations Program, which helps to support community organisations and not-forprofits across the region.

The Myall Coast’s very own Myall Coast Radio has been awarded $6,250 of seed funding to finalise the set-up of the station before they officially

start broadcasting this spring.

Chris Lock, President at Myall Coast Radio, said, “We’re thrilled to have received this Grant from the MidCoast Council to help fund our community radio station which will broadcast to the Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens, Pindimar and North Arm Cove areas.

“We’re looking forward to officially launching this year and offering the community, visitors and holiday makers broadcasts that will focus

“We will also need to establish and train a team of 30 plus volunteers to manage the radio station, so funding like this is really crucial to our success.”

The more than $17,000 of funding will be divided amongst nine local community groups and organisations through the MidCoast Council region.

Other recipients include Bucketts Way Neighbourhood

Group, Gloucester U3A, Taree Torpedoes Swim Club and Forster Neighbourhood Centre, who will each receive $2,000, in addition to other successful applicants who will use the funds to establish a community garden, replace a marquee, provide a street library, replace chairs in a senior citizens' centre, provide tennis coaching, and more.

Council’s Community Strengthening Coordinator, Lyndie Hepple said she is pleased with the variety of projects this round of

funding is able to support.

“This funding is about supporting our network of notfor-profit organisations and the many volunteers across the region who give their time to help others and deliver valuable services to the wider community, in so many different ways,” said Lyndie.

“It’s great to see the funds spread across the MidCoast and the breadth of projects it will go to.”

Holiday rental bookings strong for the Myall

SINCE travel restrictions were eased on 1 June, regional travel has been put back on the agenda for many Australians.

According to John Rumble, Director and Licensee in Charge at Hawks Nest Holidays, the Myall Coast in particular has been experiencing an unprecedented surge of travellers.

“We opened back up about two weeks prior to the Queen’s Birthday, and at that time, we had zero bookings for that long weekend.

“Within a week and a half, our properties were entirely booked out.”

Mr Rumble also shared that winter school

holidays are not typically a busy period for the Myall with about 50 per cent of properties rented on average.

“This year is already far out-performing last when comparing the same time period.

“We’re already 65 to 70 percent booked for school holidays and we still have a couple weeks left to go.

“I think a lot of people will make the last minute decision to visit the Myall Coast and we’ll get close to being fully booked out again.”

Mr Rumble continued, “Because International travel is currently off the books, I think people still want to travel but are now doing so regionally.

“This may disperse once States re-open their borders, but for now, we’re seeing people wanting to get out and travel closer to home.”

Roz Lo Ricco, rental property owner in Hawks Nest, said that they experienced some cancellations around Easter, but also received bookings for essential workers.

“As soon as States started opening their borders, we got a booking for the long weekend in June.

“I think it will start to pick up a bit now; people are wanting to get out of their regions for holidays, especially because they haven’t had a chance to travel prior to the pandemic.”

When the COVID19 pandemic struck they had a wonderful idea as to how to do so.

Finding themselves in isolation they spent the extra time at home getting to work on the Little Street Library.

The Library is a beautifully constructed wooden box handmade by Mr and Mrs Brown.

Mrs. Brown explained, “We didn't know a lot of people, but a lot of people walk up and down our street.”

“The problem is you don’t get to talk to them.”

“When the virus started, we thought let’s start a Library and put it down the front, and it just took off.”

Providing the town with the Little Street Library was the unique gift Mrs. Brown wanted to give to the community whilst so many people were confined to their homes.

She said, “This is one good way to encourage reading and its benefits for the whole community.”

“Often we forget about books.”

“Holding a book and smelling a book is magic.”

Mrs. Brown told News Of The Area about the positive impact her library has had on all those who have embraced it, “As soon as we put it out lots of people started stopping by, often with their children as the bottom shelf is all children’s books.”

“Sometimes when I am out the front gardening people stop and talk and I’ve met more local people than ever before.”

“It is just a nice way to bring people together through the love of books.”

“When the Op Shop closed an elderly lady started using us to get her books and would stand and chat, it really helped combat loneliness.”

MY daughter said she was going to move out of home next year, and I made the comment that she can hardly look after herself with me doing all her washing, cleaning. She said it wasn’t that she couldn’t do these things, it’s just that she ‘chooses not to’ while living at home. I feel like a doormat.

Dear Mrs OL, WELL, hasn’t your darling daughter got you all worked out. Yes, she knows how to clean her room, pick up the wet towels from the bathroom floor, slot a dish into the dishwasher, notice the bins are full, sweep and vacuum, and make dinner, but why would she when you are running around after her like a cut-rate domestic maid?

The solution is quite simple. You need to cut the umbilical cord. In fact you should have done it about five years ago and got your money’s worth. You are a doormat and she is using your good nature against you.

So here is how it goes. When Miss 17 asks you to drive her to work just say, ‘I can, but I choose not to’. When it is dinner time, instead of responding to the ‘I’m hungry, when is it ready?’ comment, make yourself a cheese toastie and watch Netflix. When the inevitable ‘Mum, what are we eating?’ question arises, just say, ‘I could cook dinner, but I choose not to.’ On Monday morning, when there is no freshly washed school uniform on the bed, again, you can offer the same response.

‘I could do the washing for everyone, even though I know half of it is clean and you just couldn’t be bothered putting it away, but I choose not to.’

Imagine how liberated you will feel, Mrs OL. The apple of your eye will wake up to the error of her ways and you will no longer be taken for granted. You’ll also be setting her up for success when she finally does move out.

Local Op Shops begin to re-open VINNIES and local Op Shops have begun the process of re-opening, and are now operating under adjusted hours, and with special restrictions in place, based on Government and health recommendations.

Kim Boyd, Vinnies Regional Retail Manager North-East, said that they were excited to be re-opening their shops across NSW – including Tea Gardens – with their Medowie location still under assessment.

“We are taking a measured response to re-opening our shops based on a number of factors, including the age of our volunteers and the number of reported cases in a location.

“If volunteers are at a higher risk of contracting the virus we ask that they

prioritise their health and step away until it is safe to return.

“The initial response we’ve had from volunteers has been very positive and volunteers are glad to be coming back to work and helping out their local communities.”

In terms of donations, Ms Boyd said they were heartened to see the response from people eager to donate to their shops.

“People can donate items through their local Vinnies Charity Bin; if the bin is full we ask that people hold onto their items until shops re-open and not dump goods outside the shop front,” she said.

“Vinnies welcome donations of good quality clean clothing and household items.

John was also President of the Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club and served as Chairman of Selectors at our Club.

John’s life away from bowls was just as accomplished in that he served on the Residents' Association of The Tea Gardens Grange, he was President of the Hawks Nest /Tea Gardens Probus Club and enjoyed great success in the game of Bridge.

I join with every bowling member of our Club in conveying to Jo and the Younghusband family our

sincere condolences at this sad time.

Rest in peace.

In other news: The timing of this column will mean that members will read about the return to bowling from the Country Club, as it actually happens, next Wednesday, 1 July.

Players will be allowed into the Club, no doubt under strict conditions and there will be some limits as to the number of players allowed on the greens at any one time.

From the sparse information I have available, it is likely that play will be limited to three-bowl Pairs until such time as restrictions are eased.

By The JAFFA Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club IT is with great sadness that I report the loss of one of our respected and valued bowling mates, John Younghusband.

John’s bowling life was one of service to the game of lawn bowls, not only as a competitor, in which he was extremely talented, but as an administrator as well.

In his early bowling days John competed at the highest level in Pennant competitions with great success.

During his time at Tea Gardens he played competition and Pennant bowls until quite recently until failing health
