COVID-19 Community Update FROM Page 1

COVID-19 was declared a pandemic on 11 March 2020 and the Government continues to put in place urgent and aggressive measures to slow the spread with local implications for health, services and businesses.

As at 29 March, there were 1,791 confirmed cases of COVID-19 of which 189 are in the Hunter New England health district.

This number is increasing and the Federal and State Government are urging everyone to follow NSW Health advice about social distancing, personal hygiene and staying at home.

From a health perspective, medical staff on the frontline at Ochre Health Tea Gardens shared insights into patient management during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Andrea Hammond, the Practice Manager, stated, “We are urging everyone to stay home unless absolutely urgent.

Anyone who presents to the Clinic will be asked many questions related to Coronavirus and whether they have symptoms and/or been with anyone exposed or have any respiratory illness.

The Medical Centre is seeking to provide most of their consultations via telephone unless a physical examination is absolutely required.

If physically attending there are protocols now in place that must be followed.

Firstly, book the appointment using a phone, mobile or online.

Secondly, for the appointment, drive to the Clinic and remain in the car in the carpark.

Call reception from your car and advise staff of your arrival and relevant details and wait.

If you have any symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, coughing, sore throat, fatigue, and shortness of breath), advise staff and take protective measures including wearing a mask.

Thirdly, staff will call you when it is your turn to see the Doctor.

Before seeing the Doctor, use the hand washing station situated at the entrance of the Clinic.

Note, everyone is required to thoroughly hand wash on arrival.

Finally, staff will take you to the Doctor and once completed you must leave immediately.

If you do not have a mobile, there is outdoor, undercover and spaced seating at the front of the clinic.

By Sandra MURRAY THE Minister for Police has responded to the Member for Port Stephen, Kate Washington’s question about the cost breakdown for the demountable building that the Government insists represents a "$1 million upgrade" to Tea Gardens Police Station.

The three questions posed were: 1. What is the total amount expended on the Tea Gardens Police Station upgrade as of 13 February 2020?

2. What is the amount expended on the Tea Gardens Police Station upgrade as of 5 February 2020 in relation to: planning and design; demolition and waste removal; capital costs of new building;on-site construction work; information technology costs and other costs not listed above?

3. What is the expected total cost of the Tea Gardens Police Station Upgrade?

The answer tabled in full was, “It is difficult to break down costs to a specific date mid-construction by virtue of the way that costs on a construction project are incurred.

The following figures relate to aggregated costs as at 31 January 2020, excluding GST: 1. to 2. $500,158 3. $934,000.”

A comprehensive breakdown of expenditure was not provided.

The brown box Police Station addons at Tea Gardens and Karuah are part of the 2018-2021 Regional Small Police Station Program that aims to deliver 15 sustainable and repeatable Stations at a cost of $118 million.

The project by the NSW Police Property Group, focused on accessibility, mobility and visibility.

Visibility perhaps, but not the type dismayed locals were at all expecting.

The promised $1 million upgrade was first announced onsite by Premier Gladys Berejiklian on 1 June 2019 to a large local crowd with much fanfare.

The Development Application for Tea Gardens was lodged with MidCoast Council on 11 April 2019, however locals have not been provided any opportunity for meaningful consultation prior to the brown box installation on 24 January this year.

Landscaping has been completed and red NSW state building barriers still in place.

Disappointed members of the local Progress Association are planning a meeting about the matter with reference to the NSW Heritage Act 1977.

Both the Courthouse and Police residence are classified as having local

heritage significance, dating back to the 1890's.

The Courthouse was built around 1910 and the Police residence was added in 1915.

Both are from a time when Police Constables were provided with a boat to navigate the river, in an era when activities such as illegal whisky distilleries made from old copper boilers were being discovered and confiscated.

The 'brown box' design appears at odds with the Heritage Orders that have been in place since 2004.

The Covid 19 virus is causing major changes to the way Australians live and work.

For the protection of all of us, many businesses have had to close or change the way they operate.

Mullane & Lindsay remains open - but has made the decision to close its offices, including at Tea Gardens, for the foreseeable future, to assist the community to more effectively fight the spread of the Covid-19 virus. COVID-19 Hits Myall Coast COVID-19 is impacting the daily life of everyone around the World and it is here in Port Stephens and the Myall Coast.

COVID-19 is impacting the daily life of everyone around the world and it is here in Port Stephens and the Myall Coast.

Fortunately, so far, here in Australia we have seen few deaths, however it is only a matter of time as case number surges, so too will fatalities.

The numbers clearly show that elderly populations are more at risk than younger people, this is of concern in our region.

While New Zealand is in lockdown working towards eradication of the disease, Australia is working to flatten the curve.

A move which will hopefully see

emergency departments and ICU facilities able to cope with all the cases with which our community is faced with.

However, for Port Stephens, Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest these are particularly trying times.

Port Stephens beaches, parks, playgrounds, boat ramps and halls are all closed.

Our elderly and vulnerable population is scared, and rightly so.

The statistics show that the older you are the harder the virus seems to hit.

Some elderly residents are fearful as to whether they will have beds or ventilators if they need them.

Add to this the lack of hospital facilities

and health services in Port Stephens and Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest and there is plenty to be aware about.

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington has taken the stance of actively discouraging visitors to the region – with two Sydney radio interviews this week, based on discouraging visitation to the region which desperately needs to protect its vulnerable and elderly residents.

In a letter to Health Minister Brad Hazzard she stated that the only available testing is over an hours drive from residents at Maitland and John Hunter Hospitals.

She is worried like the residents,

as many of the older more vulnerable residents can’t drive making testing unattainable.

Ms Washington has also requested drive through testing at Raymond Terrace, on the Tomaree Peninsula, and in Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest to make testing accessible to residents.

She is calling for, “Accessible testing clinics, accessible treatment beds and resources, arrangements for travel to and from clinics and additional support and supplies for those in self isolation.”

She has also raised concerns with Minister Hazzard regarding the influx of holidaymakers ignoring non-essential travel bans.

She urged the Minister, “To protect my community and others from the risk posed by tourists, I urge you to issue clear direction to all accommodation providers to prevent holidaymaking, by adding this to the restricted list.”

Dr Paul Craven, Medical Controller for COVID-19 at Hunter New England Health told News Of the Area, “We have accessed equipment and ICU capacity right across the District and have plans in place to surge when we need to.

“Every one of our hospitals are ready and prepared to treat COVID-19 patients as required.”

However Ms Washington’s letter to Minister Hazzard shows her concern for the preparedness of Tomaree Community Hospital which she believes is not ready to treat COVID-19 patients.

“The community has an important role to play in keeping people out of hospitals.

“It is of the utmost importance that everyone practices good infection prevention.

“This includes staying at home and away from other people if you are unwell with respiratory symptoms… cleaning your hands regularly throughout the day with soap and running water for 20 seconds or with an alcohol based rub,” he said.

At the time of writing COVID-19 numbers in the Hunter New England region are growing with 189 cases two of which are noted as recovered,” said Dr Craven.

Kate Washington also stated, “I appreciate the terrible hardship that a lack of visitors to our region is causing local businesses. And that those businesses employ local people who are also suffering. However, in this horrifying public health crisis, lives must be put before livelihoods. I’ll be working hard to see our local businesses and families get all the support they can during this crisis, so we can get through this as safely as possible.”

From 26 March, people breaking social distancing and quarantine can be fined $1,000 on the spot, and businesses can be fined $5,000 for breaches.

Court Attendance Notices (CANs) can also be issued, which carry a maximum penalty of an $11,000 fine and/or jail time.

NSW Police stated individuals could also be jailed for up to six months under existing enforcement powers.

Police can take immediate action in response to suspected breaches of COVID-19 public health orders, including returning

people back home or to their place of quarantine.

Police will also be ensuring that the closure of local public playgrounds, skateparks, national parks, camping and campgrounds and high-visiaton areas is upheld with locals encouraged to report any activities of concern.

Sports Complex Lights Up

By John SAHYOUN MEMBER for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead has announced almost $100000 from the NSW Government's Stronger Communities Fund for the installation of improved lighting for the sports field at the Jack Ireland Sports Complex in Bulahdelah. Mr Bromhead commented that "the lighting will provide opportunities for increased community use at night".

Bulahdelah Soccer Club President and Coaching coordinator Reece Dawes said "We were not allowed to host night games and these restrictions were not allowing us to grow as a club and let the players play in front of their families. They

had to drive some distance in order to play. We have been working on this for the last eighteen months and fortunately there was money available. Through the stronger communities fund Football Mid North Coast helped us facilitate the process and put together a nice compelling submission.

I was surprised when it came through" said Mr Dawes. "So anyone who wants to take advantage of the upgraded lights will be a big thing for us. We would like to thank everyone who was involved in the process from start to finish" said Mr Dawes.

In terms of risks to family members, the Australian Veterinary Association has advised that to date there is no evidence that pets spread the disease to humans.

There is also no evidence that pets can be a source of infection or that they can become sick from COVID-19.

The main risk of infection remains human to human contact.

If you are quarantined or practising social distancing, enjoy the time with your pets however continue to practice good hygiene procedures around hand washing and follow all instructions from Australian Government Department o Health and NSW Health.

LOCAL Sophia Jeffries bravely shaved off all her hair and exceeded her fundraising goal of $560, raising $2398 to help beat blood cancer.

A Tea Gardens Primary School alumna, Sophia informed NOTA, “My Aunt passed away due to blood cancer in 2013, and now I have been given an opportunity to help someone like her, even if I only make a small difference.”

Blood cancer is one of the top four most frequently diagnosed cancers and is one of the leading causes of death by cancer in Australia.

This was the 22nd “World’s Greatest Shave” by the Leukaemia Foundation, making it one of Australia’s longest running and most loved fundraising events.

From the photos, Sophia not only made a difference but also had fun, “experimenting with different hair styles and having a bit of a laugh.”

Sophia acknowledged the support from her family, friends, IGA, Fiona's Family Cafe and the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club.

Donations remain open until the end of June 2020.

IN response to tighter Australian and NSW Government health directives on social distancing and non-essential travel to prevent the transmission of COVID-19, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is putting in place important measures for the health and safety of our staff, visitors and the wider community that we need to let you know about.

This is a rapidly changing situation, so please check our COVID-19 update page regularly for updates and answers to frequently asked questions.

CLOSURES From 26 March 2020 until further notice, the following are closed in NSW national parks: ● All camping and campgrounds,

WHAT a strange world we are living in. At the moment Donald Trump is talking about bringing back military retirees, our PM is explaining we can’t have gatherings of more than two people, my kids are asking if they are ever going to get to see their friends again and middle-aged women are singing One Day More from Les Miserables using their hairbrushes as microphones.

I think we are all grieving for our old life – the one we took for granted just a few short weeks ago. Back when we had stable employment, the idea of toilet paper rations was too bizarre to contemplate, our children were grumbling about going to school and the thought of being in lockdown was something confined to faraway lands.

It is very difficult to stay motivated when working from home as those who have done so for years, myself included, will attest. There are so many distractions. There is no delineation between your working life and home life. People drop in unannounced (though that isn’t so much of an issue now). It is much more fun to play with the dog than write a report, and then there is the fridge.

The only way I have found to successfully work from home is to break the day up into tasks, keep a checklist, and give yourself rewards (I don’t mean anything fancy, just a cup of tea, or five minutes in the sun, or a frequent break to stretch and rest your eyes). Of course this may have been achievable before we were all suddenly thrust into the home schooling arena (previously the domain of women who describe their kids as their tribe, wear kaftans and eat their placentas). I mean, some of us just aren’t wired for home schooling. We actually work to get away from the little darlings.

I think, Mrs TK, we are all just muddling our way through this brave new world in the best way we possibly can. Success now has different parameters. If you make it through the day with a few tears, some sort of meal on the table, kids with clean hands and half a roll of toilet paper then, by my book, you are winning Carpe diem, Jasminda.

rodeos in different towns to compete in the junior steer riding and the mini bull riding.

Last year the twins successfully competed in 35 rodeos.

Darcy finished 5th in the Australian steer riding standing and Toby finished 11th.

Both qualified to compete in the Australian Bushmen's Campdraft and Rodeo Association (ABCRA) National finals held in Tamworth in January 2020.

Both are now ranked in the top 15 cowboys in Australia and are training to compete in the Australian Mini Bull riding championships.

This competition is international, attracting top rodeo cowboys from all over the world including the USA, Canada, Brazil and Mexico.

This event is on hold due to COVID-19 constraints, giving the Wiltons lots of time to train with their mini bull Bruce.

The delay also works well for big sister Daisy who competes in the rodeo circuit in the

11-14 year old barrel racing.

Daisy is training with her horse named WASP for the sport and, like her brothers, will be a formidable competitor in the years ahead.

Troy Wilton, the family’s committed Dad and Durness Station Manager, stated, “Rodeo is our family’s passion. We would like to thank Hunter Metal Market, Bowe and Lidbury Livestock agents, and Jeromy Nolan Travel and Tours for their ongoing support to our young riders so they can train and get on the road each weekend to compete across Australia. We are looking forward to competing in the near future.”

Top Local Cowboys in National Rodeo Championships

By Sandra MURRAY LOCAL twins, Darcy and Toby Wilton (10 years old) have been passionate about rodeo their whole lives.

Now two of Australia’s top young Cowboys, the twins have been in and around the competitive sport for many years, living on large working Farms.

Same for their big sister, Daisy.

The Wilton Family live and work at Durness Station, Tea Gardens, a 4000 hectare run of productive pastures used to produce beef cattle.

Tea Gardens’ The twins, who are also students at Tea Gardens School, began competing in rodeo last year every weekend.
