‘Big Cake Bake’ is on again

By Margie TIERNEY THE ‘Big Cake Bake’ is on again, raising much needed funds for the Red Cross.

Leading the cravings for all things sweet in the Myall is Tea Gardens resident and president of the local branch of the Red Cross, Jennifer Wenham.

Jennifer is putting out the call for volunteers to bake or donate to the worthwhile initiative.

“It’s been going for a number of years now and

it’s one of the Red Cross’s most successful fundraisers,” Jennifer said.

“The community is wonderful, they may not be Red Cross members but they donate cakes, they bring them in and say my mum was in the Red Cross and it’s in memory of her.”

“People bring in two cakes and they buy two cakes, made by someone else,” Jennifer said with a laugh.

“Last year we planned on going until 2pm but we were sold out by midday,” Jennifer said.

The Red Cross meets the fourth Monday of every month at the Masonic Hall in Myall Street, from 10am.

Water Restrictions Possible A HOT dry start to spring and increased water consumption across the MidCoast region has prompted warnings water restrictions may be needed within the next two months if the situation doesn’t change.

The community is being asked to be mindful of their water use, in particular with the amount of water used outside, MidCoast Council’s director of water services, Brendan Guiney has explained.

“Water restrictions may be necessary if we don’t receive some solid rainfall in the next four weeks, so we’re asking our community to take part in our voluntary summer water saving program

which aims to reduce the volume of water used outside,” Mr Guiney said.

The main message of the summer water saving program – ‘don’t spray in the middle of the day’- applies across the MidCoast region and asks community members to limit outdoor water usage between the hours of 9am and 4pm.

Mr Guiney said water consumption is currently 13 per cent above the average across the MidCoast area.

“The current hot dry weather impacts on our water supplies in two ways, the lack of rain means source supplies are not replenished and

the heat often results in more water use than usual. “ MidCoast Water, which on July 1 became the water services division of MidCoast Council, last imposed water restrictions on the region in February 2014.

MidCoast Water Services operates five water supply systems across the region covering the Manning, Great Lakes, Bulahdelah, Stroud, Gloucester and Tea Gardens areas. All supplies, other than the Tea Gardens supply which is a groundwater source, are dependent on local rivers.

The Manning scheme, which supplies customers from Crowdy Head in the north to Tarbuck Bay in the south and west to Krambach, relies on storage in

Bootawa Dam and flows in the Manning River.

“We have a constant watch on river levels as part of our management of our water supplies and are predicting river flows will be critical if we don’t get more rain over the next month.”

MidCoast Water Services is currently working on the construction of a $34.6 million project – the Nabiac Inland Dune Aquifer Water Supply System – which will provide a second water source for the main Manning scheme. This will remove the area’s reliance on the Manning River for water during times of low river flow.

This system is expected to be commissioned by November 2018.

It’s for anyone who’s ever looked in their wardrobe and thought ‘I have nothing to wear’.

Everyone can join in the campaign in the run up to the Myall River Festival.

“We are looking for donations of second hand clothes,” Kerry Patterson told News Of The Area.

When Kerry says ‘we,’ she’s talking about ‘The Pearls’ who are a group of women who raise money for good causes by getting together for lunch once a month and popping $15 each in the kitty.

Since 2013 they’ve donated over $5,500.

“We’ve donated to local Rural Fire Service, the Wig Library at John Hunter Hospital, women’s refuges in Newcastle, Bulahdelah and Raymond Terrace,” Kerry Patterson told News Of The Area.

“We also give an encouragement gift to a student at Tea Gardens Primary which is an ongoing commitment,” Kerry said.

Last year the Pearl’s ‘Buy My Wardrobe ’campaign raised $1,150 for Jenny’s Place, a refuge for women and children in Newcastle.

This year money raised will go to ’Harry’s House’, a home away from home for children undergoing cancer treatment.

“We’re hoping because people found us last year, they’ll be looking for us again,” Kerry said.

Bridge Bonza

The Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey 2017 is now open.

EMU Creek Bridge is one of 13 bridges in the MidCoast Council area to receive funding in the latest round of the Federal Coalition Government’s Bridges Renewal Program.

The grant includes $750,000 to replace the timber bridge at Emu Creek south of Bulahdelah with a two-lane concrete structure.

Making the announcement, Federal Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie, said the funding “is great news for bridges in the Lyne Electorate”.

“This will help fast track many important projects in the local roads and bridges program,” he said.

Other MidCoast bridges to receive funding include $800,000 for Bobin Creek Bridge, $600,000 for Bulga Creek Bridge and $800,000 for Burrell Creek.

Dr Gillespie said more than $16m in funding has been allocated for bridges in the Lyne Electorate.

EXCITING times for bird watchers in the Myall.

Dedicated twitcher Neil Fraser received a surprise when he visited the sand spit at Winda Woppa last week to check the site for the Little Tern.

What he discovered was a Pied Oystercatcher nest with two highly camouflaged eggs and their parents keeping guard close by.

“This is a significant discovery for Port Stephens,” Neil said.

“While around 150 Pied Oystercatchers are known to live here year round, there are no previous records of successful breeding in the

Mr TY, Medowie THERE’S a saying about mixing business and pleasure.

What is it? I would look it up but I am still waiting for NBN service after three months.

If anyone out there would like to write to Jasminda about NBN service, go ahead; make my day.

Now, back to you, Mr TY. Forget the three-course meal.

That is a disaster waiting to happen. I once tried to cook a three-course meal for some new Korean friends.

I also tried to cook Korean cuisine.

Not only did I never see them again, but they actually left the neighbourhood in the dark of night, with not so much as a forwarding number.

There’s only one solution and that’s to serve fondue. It’s basically two of the most divine things on earth mixed into a pot – cheese and alcohol.

It was big in the 70s and, quite frankly, I can’t understand why it went out of fashion.

It is also a very hands-on meal, so it may be an opportunity to showcase your employability skills.

What would you do, for example, if your boss’s fiancé did not realise that she had a bit of melted cheese stuck to her cheek?

How would you respond if the fondue flame set the tablecloth on fire?

There’s a bit of good old Connie Confidence required in that moment.

Or how about when your wife accidentally drops her crusty bread into the seductively erupting cheese and then leans over and displays some Gabby Get Along, leaning in for a kiss from the person on her left, which happens to be your new boss.

This is, I should add, customary fondue etiquette – see page 56 titled ‘The Unexpected Delights of Dropping Your Crouton’ in the 1970s Fondue Guide (it was, Mr TY, a freeloving decade).

I hope I’ve been helpful. Let me know how it all goes.

WHEN Tea Gardens restaurateur Jenna Fidden travelled to Tasmania six years ago for a friend’s birthday, little did she realise that the trip would change the course of her life forever.

Fast forward to last Friday and it was wedding bells for Jenna and Nathanial Menzie, the man she’d met by chance in a Tassie cargo bar back in 2011.

“Nathanial was there with his brother Isaac for Friday night drinks,” Jenna said.

Jenna was struggling to get to the bar to order a birthday cocktail when she decided to ask Nathanial to order the drinks for her.

They chatted for a while and the boys eventually joined Jenna and her friends.

Jenna recalls “At first, I wasn’t that interested but Nathanial was persistent, even putting his number

into my phone without me realising.”

When she got home, he had messaged her and the rest, and they say, is history.

Nathanial and Jenna became engaged last year while on a driving holiday along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road.

Nathanial popped the question and produced the ring at the Silver Band Falls.

When it came to the wedding, there really wasn’t any choice.

The couple chose Bennetts Beach for their wedding ceremony and as they now run Mumm’s Restaurant they had the perfect place for a reception.

The happy couple shared their wedding night with a hundred close family and friends.

But there’s no honeymoon just yet.

“It’s school holidays so we’re too busy with the restaurant,” Jenna said.

“But it will happen, just a bit later.”

The event was funded by the local committee with plenty of giveaways, prizes and glow sticks on offer during the evening, Phillip said although the event was hosted by the PCYC, “credit needs to go to the local guys here at Bulahdelah”.

“Ashley Ray and his wife Aleesha, and the rest of the local area command are the driving force behind it,” he said.

IT was colourful and joyful in Hawks Nest last weekend as the community came together in support of the Boomerang Bags’ plastic free hour on Saturday morning. ‘’We’ve had a fabulous

Local State MP Kate Washington was also on hand, only too happy to lend her ongoing support having recently championed the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest plastic free campaign on the floor of the NSW Parliament.

“It’s fantastic when the community comes together to bring about change,” Kate said.

Bushcare meets bitou busting THE Bitou Busters of Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens celebrated the annual national Bushcare Major Day Out by continuing to restore and maintain the wonderful local sand dunes and native bush.

On Saturday 23 September, the volunteers were very lucky that the forecast hot winds did not happen.

Although uncomfortably hot at times, it was not unbearable.

The Wi-Fi Story THE Myall U3A crew were delighted to have a visit from Dr Alan Young from Port Stephens Third Age Learning who presented ‘The Wi-Fi Story’ to members at Hawks Nest Old Library.

Dr Young was associated with the brilliant team of CSIRO scientists who invented the now famous Wi-Fi, the wireless local area network (LAN) system.

He described the painstaking research that led to the technology which was ahead of its time.

Dr Young explored the background of those involved and how the right mix of people came to be at CSIRO at the crucial time in the early 1990s.

He outlined how they overcame the difficult challenge in attempting to get fast and reliable wireless data transfer inside

buildings where multiple signal reflections from walls, furniture and people damage the radio signal.

Early attempts suffered from serious dropouts and low speed due to the noisy “echo” environment.

MP Demands Funding MEMBER for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead, has once again called on the NSW Government to provide $50 million for MidCoast roads.

“This is not only about infrastructure and expenditure on roads; it is about making roads that connect communities safe,” Mr Bromhead said in Parliament last week.

“This is important not only for families and children, but for school buses, dairy tankers, cattle trucks and freight.”

Mr Bromhead said Council is borrowing $50 million from the State Government to address the significant asset backlog, which will be paid back with the special rate variation.

“I have made representations to the Premier, the Deputy Premier and the Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey, to match that $50 million, dollar for dollar,” Mr Bromhead stated.

The NRMA estimates that the road and bridge backlog in regional New South Wales is about $1.3 billion.

“MidCoast Council has about a $200 million backlog alone, which is probably more than any other council,” Mr Bromhead said.

“The best way the Government can help this particularly complex merger of councils is with this funding.”

Mr Bromhead stated he “can provide the Minister with her favourite chocolate if she comes to the party” with the funding.

For English born Gill, art has been a passion since she was 11 years old.

In her early career she attended Leicester College of Art to Study Foundation and Leisurewear design.

At 19, she gained a City and Guilds Diploma, which qualified her to become a designer.

In 1973 her career with Berlei brought her to Sydney.

Nine years later she moved to Port Stephens where she resumed painting.

Her paintings are mainly in acrylics, watercolour, and pen and ink.

She has won over 100 prizes and commendations, including three prizes at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Most recently Gill has taken up making hand built pottery and incorporating paintings of animals, birds and flowers.

She also makes handmade cards, magnets and signed prints.

Gill Ward told News Of The Area, “I love to be creative and hand building pottery gives me plenty of challenges to achieve my design goals.”

Gill believes that her background in fashion design has been invaluable to her artistic works.

“Being able to hand build pottery and then paint my designs on the pieces is something which I am enjoying greatly,” she said.

The potter’s barn at the Port Stephens Community Art Centre has first class facilities including several kilns and wheels.

Anyone interested in taking part in the pottery group can contact the centre.

SPRING, summer, autumn, winter – no matter what the season or the weather you’ll find the intrepid souls from the Myall Masters Swimming Club in the water or travelling to find some.

Six members of the club recently competed in Round 9 of the Branch Point Score at Ryde in Sydney’s north west.

Rose, Brad Jensen, Chris Lock, Leon Bobako and Chris Mobbs all performed well with podium finishes for most,” Valerie Mobbs told News Of The Area.

“There were 24 clubs represented at the meet with 159 individual swimmers and with just six swimmers, Myall finished in eighth position.”

This leaves the Myall Masters still maintaining number one position in the

second division.

Coming up as well is the Open Swim at Jimmys Beach which is open to all competitors aged 18 years and over.

“There will be a 600m and a 1300m swim and the good news is you don’t need to be a member of Masters Swimming to enter either event.”

The swim is being held on Sunday 29 October.

Whale of a time for Walkers

THURSDAY 14 saw us taking our chances with the weather.

We were invited to revisit the Burdekin area where Mr and Mrs Shuetrim have their excellent 1200 acre property which adjoins the Myall River not far from Bulahdelah.

Once again we enjoyed their hospitality being guided around a section that was unavailable last year due to bushfires.

We returned home with bags full of oranges and mandarins from their orchard feeling very privileged.

Our most recent walk was to Fingal Bay where last year we were able to

The tides were not suitable this time so Barry Park was an alternative plan.

This was a new area for most of us which followed a rolling path along the headland.

What great views we had, some were lucky and saw whales as well as rocky outcrops and shores.

Another welcome surprise was the abundance of wildflowers, so many varieties among the large areas of flannel flowers.

I think this walk will be added to our favourites list.

By The JAFFA 20 SEPTEMBER: With many players away at Dubbo competing in the RSL Competition there, 40

Whilst most played Triples there were a few games of Fours.

It was a Fours team that took home the money.

John Atherton, Gary Wynne and Gary Melrose.
