Take for instance the volunteers from Red Cross who wake up early three mornings a week to put breakfast on the table at Tea Gardens Primary School.

Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning you’ll find the “Breakfast Club” providing that much needed kick start to the day for more than 50 school children.

In accepting the resignation Mayor David West congratulated Glenn on the work and achievements since the merger in May 2016.

“This is disappointing news for MidCoast. As Councillors we have been building on the great work undertaken by Glenn and the staff since May 2016.

Glenn has positioned the Council for success and now our job is to continue to build on this work”, Cr West said.

“Glenn will be remembered for his passion and commitment to the success of MidCoast Council”.

In a statement to staff last night Glenn commented “We have faced a number of significant challenges

The local branch of St Vincent de Paul is again conducting its popular ‘Cash Bingo’.

Every Tuesday and Thursday until January 25 you can scratch off your numbers from nought to 90 and all are welcome.

Recently members of the Grange Art and Craft Group donated $1,000 to the ‘Breakfast Club’.

It’s well worth noting that next year the “Breakfast Club” will be mostly selffunded, donations such as the cheque from the Grange vital to keeping ‘brekkie’ on the table for our children of the Myall.

FEDERAL Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie has been re-appointed to the Federal Coalition Government’s Ministry.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull contacted Dr Gillespie to invite him to again be part of the Ministry as the new Assistant Minister for Children and Families, as part of new ministerial a r r a n g e m e n t s announced today.

Dr Gillespie said he thoroughly enjoyed working in the Health portfolio as Australia’s Assistant Health Minister, and looked forward to the challenge

of new ministerial responsibilities.

“Over the past year and half, I have very much enjoyed working with the various health stakeholders and my department in developing new policies to address the maldistribution of Australia’s health workforce. Some of those policies are now at the implementation stage, and others, are being developed in the context of a broader health workforce strategy,” Dr Gillespie said.

“The creation of 26 new regional training hubs, three additional

MIDCOAST Councillors have voted in favour of proceeding with investigations into bringing Council’s four administrative offices under the one roof.

The proposed site is the former Masters Home Improvement building in Taree recently purchased by the cash-strapped Council for $7 million.

A draft Business Case weighing up the

costs and benefits of relocating to a single site against refurbishing the existing offices was presented at last week’s Council meeting for consideration.

Meeting minutes show only Cr’s Fowler, McWilliams and Smith voted against proceeding with investigating the single site option.

Council said merging the offices is expected to deliver more efficient

service delivery and cost savings over time.

“The potential consolidation of Council’s administrative functions will mean tangible savings and operational efficiencies,” they said.

The cost of the Masters building will be funded by a loan to be repaid over 20 years using revenue sourced from Council’s property investments.

BULAHDELAH Chamber of Commerce and Tourism was a runner-up at the recently held 2017 NSW Business Awards.

“We were informed that the judges had narrowed it down to Bulahdelah and Gunnedah Chambers with Gunnedah narrowly edging us out,” President John Sahyoun said.

Bulahdelah was one of 13 finalists in the Excellence in Local Chamber category, just missing the top spot by half a point.

NSW Business Chamber CEO Stephen Cartwright said due to the quality of Bulahdelah’s entry, judges

unanimously recommended the local chamber for a special award.

“This is the first year I have awarded the CEO Highly Commended Certificate and I am delighted to support the State Judges in their recommendation,” Mr Cartwright said.

Bulahdelah progressed to the state finals after winning their category at the Hunter Business Awards earlier this year.

“This recognition is the result of many people at the local level working tirelessly to achieve the best for their community,” John said.

“It has taken many years

of hard work to reach this point, it has been a journey not a destination, and there is still a lot to achieve.”

The recent award ceremony was held at the International Conference Centre at Darling Harbour and was attended by more than 1,000 business representatives from around the state.

The awards were presented in 12 categories, celebrating business success across a variety of industries.

“It places us on the map and demonstrates that no matter how small your town is or how small you think your voice is, you can make a difference,” John said.

After a well-deserved break over the holiday period, the Bulahdelah Chamber will be embarking on new and exciting projects in 2018.

“As of 11 December, Share the Dignity collected 104,361 bags across Australia.”

School Holiday Fun

By Margie TIERNEY NOW that the excitement of Christmas is over, the question on many parents lips is “What to do for the rest of the school holidays?”

The children who live or visit the Myall are spoilt with beaches, rivers and bush to explore.

But if you’re looking for something to do indoors, then Tea Gardens Library has some fun activities ahead in January.

The Library is closed until Wednesday 3 January

giving Librarians Chris Shelly, Carol Johnson and all the volunteers who give their time throughout the year, a well earned rest.

But when the doors open again, there’s lots to do from books to borrow to computers to use to google the world.

And returning by popular demand is the search for hidden treasure at the ‘Crazy Daisy Magic Show and Pirate Party’.

“Come dressed as your favourite, swashbuckling pirate, mermaid, monster or princess,” Chris Shelly said.

“It will be full of excitement, mayhem, fun facts, games, games, magic and of course treasure!”

The Pirate Party is suitable for children aged five years and up, and costs $7 per child.

The swashbuckling takes place on Wednesday 17 January from 2.30pm until 3.30pm.

If you miss the pirates there’s also Crafty Science taking place at Tea Gardens Library on Wednesday 24 January from 2.30 till 3.30pm.

The afternoon will be full of crazy, messy, slimy fun.

Again the cost is $7 per head and suitable for ages 5 to 12.

Bookings are essential for both activities.

Dear Jasminda, I recently received my ATAR and I didn’t get the result I was hoping for. I’m really annoyed.

People are not defined by a number . . . well, unless you are Kevin 07, Blink-182, James Bond 007, Ben Folds Five, The Fantastic Four . . . okay, some people are defined by numbers.

But let’s not allow that to ruin a good argument. Most people are not defined by numbers, and you should not be defined by your ATAR. It may seem as though it is the be all and end all of life as you know it, but trust me, there are plenty of ways to skin a cat.

Actually, don’t trust me on that one. I can think of only one way to skin a cat.

Of course you are feeling disappointed at this point in time. Particularly when there are multiple media reports placing people with an ATAR of 99.85 on a pinnacle. What is even worse is when these high achievers are quoted as being devastated that they didn’t get the score they were hoping for. What the?

To make you feel better, I took a quick survey of the people in my office, to see how their ATAR affected their lives. Here are their responses: “What’s an ATAR?” “At the end of the day it comes down to hard work and doing the monotonous, small things regularly. It is all about dedication and persistence.” (Picture several staff members sticking their fingers down their throats).

“I have never, in my entire life, been asked what my HSC result was in any interview, promotion, or training course.”

“Can you stop asking questions so we can close the building and go for a drink?”

“I didn’t get into the course I wanted to, but when I look back on it, I’m pretty pleased, because I now have absolutely zero desire to be a psychologist.” (Having worked with this person, that outcome is indeed fortunate).

So, Miss AK, fret not. With around one in three students failing to complete their studies within six years, there will be plenty of spots available.

Oliver’s open for business AFTER a much anticipated wait, Oliver’s recently opened its latest store at Bulahdelah in time for the busy holiday period.

With a team of 15 local staff, there were plenty of

familiar faces when the first customers came through the doors at 6am on the opening day of trade.

Oliver’s Business Development Manager Lori Thompson said the new jobs

will have a positive impact on the local community.

“We have mainly hired young people, so it helps support youth employment opportunities and economy in Bulahdelah,” she said.

Several local residents also popped in the evening before the doors officially opened for a sneak peak of the renovated café.

“Everyone in Bulahdelah has been wonderful in their support,” Lori told News Of The Area.

With many travellers already aware of the Oliver’s brand, it is hoped that the organic food chain will be another drawcard to attract

motorist off the highway.

Oliver’s founder and CEO Jason Gunn said the town is an excellent destination for travellers to rest and relax.

“Bulahdelah has long been a famous stopping point for travellers heading north out of Sydney and the gateway to the Myall Lakes district, one of the state’s largest coastal lake systems,” he said.

Bulahdelah Oliver’s is the 26th store in the chain.

Many State Significant Projects in NSW have Community Consultative Committees.

These committees provide a forum for open dialogue between the proponent and representatives of the local community, stakeholder groups and local councils on issues directly relating to the project.

We are looking for people who live locally or are a member of a stakeholder group (community, environment, Aboriginal or industry) to join the Brandy Hill Quarry Community Consultative Committee.

Your role as a committee member would be voluntary.

Selection criteria: You will be expected to contribute constructively to committee discussions, attend around (four) meetings a year, and communicate information about the Brandy Hill Quarry between the committee and the broader community.

PROPOSAL TO UPGRADE A MOBILE PHONE TELECOMMUNICATIONS FACILITY IN SOLDIERS POINT Optus plans to improve the telecommunications services in Soldiers Point and surrounding areas with the installation of a telecommunications facility at an existing site to improve coverage and mobile phone services in the area.

Optus proposes to install a new telecommunications facility at: - 5-7 Mitchell Street, Soldiers Point NSW 2317 (RFNSA No. 2317002) Involving: • The replacement of three (3) existing panel antennas with three (3) new Optus antennas at a height of 15.7m on new mounts; • The installation of twelve (12) new Remote Radio Units (RRUs) at a height of 15.7m on the existing tower on new mounts; • The installation of a new GPS antenna at a height of 16.7m; • Associated and necessary ancillary works to ensure the proper functioning of the telecommunications facility including cabling, earthing, signage, safe access, electrical works and replacement or strengthening of the existing mounting arrangement.

The proposed works do not require development approval. The proposed works are defined as “Low-impact Facilities” in accordance with the Telecommunications (Low-impact Facilities) Determination 1997 and “maintenance activity” as defined in Schedule 3 of the Telecommunications Act 1997. The proposed infrastructure complies with the ACMA EMR regulatory arrangements.

Ahead in HSC Rankings

By Daniel SAHYOUN BULAHDELAH Central School’s (BCS) top HSC results have ranked them ahead of other schools in the region once again.

Figures from the NSW Education Standards Authority show Bulahdelah finished in front of Hunter River, Irrawang and Gloucester High Schools in the 2017 rankings.

Additionally, it has been reported that Bulahdelah was ranked in the top five percent of 888 NSW secondary schools in the Standard English course.

The rankings compare HSC results from schools based on the number of students sitting exams and the number of top bands achieved.

BCS Relieving Principal Mrs Deb Gilbert attributes

the success to the hard work from students and staff, small class sizes and tailoring programs to individual needs of students.

“Having smaller cohorts going through the HSC, there is more personalised approach to teaching and learning,” she said.

“The rankings are certainly a bit of a confidence boost in the things we have implemented to help students through their senior studies.”

Mrs Gilbert said support strategies in place include a teacher-student mentor program, study skills camp and additional teaching time.

“Our staff volunteer their time over holidays, after school and on weekends for our students,” she said.

“It is a matter of doing the best we can with the expertise of staff and the students we have in the school.”
