Cafes, clubs, pubs, bakeries and restaurants in Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Bulahdelah and Stroud are squeaky clean, with not one penalty notice issued by the NSW Food Authority in the last financial year.

Greens Bistro at Bulahdelah Bowling Club was inspected last week, and are “pleased to have been awarded the highest rating” once again.

“The inspector is very thorough and checks everything, including fridge temperature, dates on products, food storage and cleanliness of the premises and equipment,” owner Donna Shannon said.

“We are inspected twice a year and no prior warning is given, so we don’t know when they are going to drop in.”

Donna said their high rating is a reflection of the

staff.

Although kitchens in the local area sparkle, the Food Authority’s ‘Name and Shame’ register reveals penalty notices were issued to four businesses in other parts of the MidCoast region.

The infringements were for minor offences including failure to maintain a supply of single use towels near hand washing facilities and sale of food past its use-by date, both

attracting $880 fines.

Complementing the register is the ‘Scores on Doors’ program which is run by MidCoast Council in partnership with the NSW Food Authority.

Under the program, businesses that are awarded a minimum three-star rating during their routine inspection, receive a certificate to display.

Tea Gardens Ice Cream Shack Co-owner, Les Smith, said they were inspected last week and couldn’t be happier with their five-star rating.

“It is a great achievement for the

team that we meet the standards,” he said.

“Our senior staff are proactive in ensuring that everything is kept in the best possible condition.”

Les said the addition of a dishwasher ensures everything is washed and sanitised to the highest standard, “which is another reason why we have achieved multiple fivestar ratings”.

Council said the ratings give customers “peace of mind” when choosing where to dine.

The sign dates back to when there were two ferry operators servicing the Tea Gardens/Nelson Bay run.

This week’s meeting follows a forum last Thursday between concerned residents, businesses, MidCoast Council and Ferry Owner Adrian Thompson and

his advisors.

More than 80 people packed the Hawks Nest Community Centre for the meeting organised by the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association.

“The meeting was called as the Progress Association had received a number of complaints about the ferry,” Secretary Patricia Garrard said.

Reliability was high on the agenda.

“There is a view that the service

has deteriorated considerably over the past six months,” Patricia said.

“There have been occasions where people have been left stranded at Tea Gardens and Nelson Bay due either to the ferry simply not showing up or not adhering to the published departure times.”

It was noted that businesses are suffering, that the schedule is wrong and cannot be relied upon, and access, particularly in Nelson Bay is difficult for people with limited mobility.

Also of major concern, the Hawks Nest Wharf is no longer being used as a pickup or departure point.

From the outset, Mr Thompson’s business advisor Malcolm Anderson made it very clear, “The Ferry Operation is not a public service and as such is not bound by local or state government regulations.”

He also noted that bad weather hindered daily operations and scheduling but that a new timetable was under review.

Mr Anderson also encouraged people to visit the Ferry’s Facebook

page to check the ferry’s operating times.

Myall River Action Group’s Gordon Grainger was not happy with the proposal.

“There has to be a better way of communication in regards to the timetable,” Gordon said.

“This matter does not end with this meeting,” Patricia said.

Mr Thompson’s take on Thursday’s forum was brief and to the point “It was an excellent meeting,” he told News Of The Area.

The “high income threshold” is the figure above which an employee is not eligible to bring a claim for unfair dismissal relief, unless their employment is covered by an award or enterprise agreement. Each year, the high income threshold for unfair dismissal claims is indexed upwards.

The components of remuneration that count towards to high income threshold are wages, money paid on a worker’s behalf (for example salary sacrifice towards non-concessional superannuation contributions; or to vehicle leases and the like) and the agreed value of

Commencing from 1 July 2017, the high income threshold has increased from $138,900.00, to $142,000.00.

The threshold, and the components that are included in it or excluded from it, are important to both workers and employers. Depending on individual circumstances, they may determine whether or not a worker is able to bring a claim for unfair dismissal relief.

Voice For Students THE new Student Representative Council (SRC) team at Bulahdelah Central School officially commenced their duties last week.

Team members were democratically elected to their positions and will represent their year group in issues relating to the school.

“I am honoured that my peers have confidence in my ability to represent them,” Year 10 student Molly Perry said.

“Being part of the SRC will also provide a stepping stone on the way to achieving my leadership goals,” Ashleigh Dorney added.

As part of their new roles, the team will act as a voice for their peers, undertake fundraising for school equipment and charities and host events, including discos.

‘Tis The Season THE hall was decked and the guests were jolly at a Christmas in July celebration held at Bulahdelah Bowling Club last weekend.

Revelers enjoyed the festive spirit as they merrily mingled amongst the Christmas trees and tables laden with baubles, bonbons and tinsel.

The Good Ol’ Rock n Roll band had the crowd on their feet, ensuring the dance floor jingled all the way.

But the event was much more than just a festive celebration, with the Bulahdelah community turning out in force to raise some much-needed funds for the Great Lakes Women’s Shelter (GLWS).

Russell and Maree Richards said they attended the event to have a great night out and support the initiative.

“It is a good fundraiser for a good cause, and something so important for the community,” Russell said.

“It was a fun night, the food and band were great, and it was good to enjoy the company of other community members.”

The GLWS has been open for two years and provides support for women escaping domestic violence and abuse.

The next fundraiser for the shelter will be held at Hawks Nest Golf Club on Saturday 29 July.

New Appoint for N.O.T.A. publications

THE News Of The Area team is thrilled to welcome their newest addition, Glenda Farrar.

With extensive sales experience and knowledge, Glenda has been appointed as Business Development Manager of the ‘hyper-local’ community paper.

Thirty years in business sales, marketing and advertising means that Ms Farrar is well equipped to look after the paper’s current and future customers.

Glenda said, “I am passionately throwing myself into the task of making this very local paper successful and interesting for the residents of the area and of real value to the local business community in terms of reaching their local customers.”

Glenda moved to Port Stephens about three years ago after living for many years in Far North Queensland.

She has been working in the area for a well known Port

Stephens [Fairfax] paper for that period of time.

News Of The Area Director Michael Wright said the move Ms Farrar has made is a win for the independent paper and for the community.

“I’ve known Glenda for the past three years. I actually hired her when I was at the Examiner and know that her biggest strength is her ability to throw-herself-in and totally understand how a local business operates before making recommendations on its marketing.”

“It was a ‘no-brainer’ for us to appoint her. The three [current] News Of The Area publications are warmly accepted in their respective communities as a strong alternative to the long-time media that has been here,” said Mr Wright.

Glenda has a wide range of experience in sales, originally starting as a travel consultant in a travel agency in Mount Isa and Townsville.

Following this Glenda joined Yellow Pages as their

Advertising Consultant where she spent a number of years looking after a large area of Queensland.

She later moved on to take a challenging job of managing a company in the building industry before finally moving into the media industry, where she excels.

“I do enjoy the face to face meetings and assisting local business owners and managers.”

Glenda said, “Having settled into the area, I have grown to love the comparatively cool, beautiful area of Port Stephens; I am looking forward to my new role as Business Development Manager for News Of The Area, which seems to be gaining more and more traction every week.”

After the first year you will raise your pillow and press it gently over his nose and mouth until the horrendous racket subsides.

By the fifth year you will no doubt be sleeping in the spare room with the dog and re-reading the Bible to find what verses deal with the specific issue of sleep deprivation leading to evil plotting..

Dog Days for Locals

Dear News Of The Area,

Yet again I’m being forced to listen to the loudly vocalised separation anxiety of a dog “on holiday”.

It’s nice that holidaymakers can bring their pets with them, but to

to take them with them on their jaunts or to make some other arrangements that don’t cause their animals and nearby human residents daily holiday distress.

Ferry Service Woes

Dear News Of The Area,

I WENT along to the Progress Association meeting last week,Thursday evening, to hear about the Ferry Service and the community issues relating to reliability, communication and overall lack and quality of service.

How bitterly disappointed I was to hear that the Hawks Nest wharf was more of a hindrance in their schedule rather than another positive to sell to their customers.

The community raised over $100,000 to get this floating pontoon built added by the generous donation of We-ef Lighting who provided the lighting as a donation at considerable cost to them.

This was all done because a few locals shared an idea of how to get visitors from Nelson Bay to see our beautiful beaches and allow them time to enjoy it.

With the help of the Progress Association, we were able to achieve this wonderful result.

However, based on the comments on the night it appears that scheduling a stop at Hawks Nest in the timetable is difficult!!

Seriously it was a comment which was farcical to say the least and raised considerable consternation from those in the hall. Simply said, ‘You make time in the timetable’.

All businesses in Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens understand seasonality as it is nothing new in a holiday destination location.

We adjust our hours and staff to offset the quiet times but also bank the money in the busy period for exactly those times.

That’s nothing new to us nor should it be to Ferry Service.

The same would apply to the ferry service. In the off season run a reduced but reliable service and communicate what you are doing.

Nobody will give you grief if you should adopt this

approach.

The disappointing thing was the Ferry Service arrived with no plan moving forward e.g proposed off season timetable, commitment of stopping at Hawks Nest, and giving a commitment as to the reliability of the vessels to provide the service advertised.

There was talk about declining numbers from the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest side.

Surely by now there must be an understanding of why.

Passengers won’t use a service that can’t be relied on. Address these issues and things may change.

It’s clear that the monopoly we have today has a number of shortcomings.

Dear News Of The Area, WHAT a team! MidCoast Council (MCC),Mr Stephen Bromhead and IPART. I drafted this letter weeks ago, knowing that all the cards would fall into place.

MCC did not discuss this latest proposal for a Special

Rate Variation (SRV) with the community.

Under a different proposal, they did discuss the need for more funds for roads and bridges, but, when MCC realised that they were ineligible to apply for a SRV, they straight away found the necessary funds through savings.

Then, they got greedy once again.

Hotel owners Ben and Emily Hanson are christening their new fire pit in spectacular fashion.

IPART’s generosity has reduced this to 27.3 percent.

We should all be thankful and gracious for their consideration.

Ratepayers in the prestigious area of Glebe only pay $1250 per year.

This is at a time when wages and inflation are below two percent.

I believe IPART’s

determination of MCC’s SRV 2017, has failed on the criteria of engaging the community and in measuring the impact on ratepayers.

I do not believe that having no representatives on Council is fair and just to ratepayers.

I urge ratepayers to recall these proceedings when Council and State Elections take place.

Beyond the Blue Limits

EVERYTHING blue, including the sky, was on parade at Myall Park last Saturday when the Myall Coast Mudcrabs hosted BeyondBlue Day as their chosen charity for 2017.

The hardworking Canteen Committee produced and created an array of baked goodies all beautifully presented with touches of blue ribbon and bags which made for excellent sales from the full crowd who arrived to show their support for our fantastic Blue Day event.

President, David Bright, provided a running commentary during the afternoon on the

sound system encouraging supporters to become involved in the Blue Day sales and at the same time kept the crowd up to date with the Rugby scores as well as promoting the culinary delights from the barbecue which was manned by Peter Cameron and Sam Johnston.

In addition to our regular sponsors who were mentioned several times throughout the afternoon, special thanks should also go to Coles, Peekaboo Creations, Mungo Road Surf Shop, Mumms on the Myall, Tea Gardens Hotel, Queens Kitchen, Myall Coast News Of The Area, Heidi Davidson and the North Queensland Cowboys, all of

whom made generous donations for Blue Day. North Queensland Cowboys (organised by David John) gave us a football jersey which had been personally signed by their players – this jersey was our main raffle for the day which was drawn at the hotel after the game and was won by a very excited Wallamba supporter.

Overall, a hugely successful day allowing the Myall Coast Mudcrabs to send a substantial cheque to the BeyondBlue Foundation to assist in their promotion and support of many Australians suffering from anxiety and depression.

Rate Hike Approved IT’S official, MidCoast ratepayers will be slugged with a 27.3 percent rate increase over the next four years.

The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) approved Council’s application for a permanent cumulative rate increase last week, despite receiving 158 public submissions opposing the rise.

Council sought a 28.5 percent rate hike, but

IPART approved a slightly lower amount “because the 1.5 percent rate peg for 2017-18 is lower than that assumed by the council in its community consultation”.

Rates will rise by 10 percent in 2017-18, and will continue with an annual five percent increase in the following three years.

According to IPART estimates, residential ratepayers will need to fork out an extra $67 over the

next 12 months, equating to around $1.28 per week.

Business rates will increase by $193 and farmland by $80.

IPART Chairman, Peter Boxall, said “the impacts on individual landowners may vary as the Council intends to maintain separate rating structures for each of the former Councils”.

Council will use the additional $23.7 million generated over the next four years for asset maintenance, reduction of infrastructure backlog and environmental programs.

Dr Boxall said IPART considers the impact of the increase “substantial but reasonable given current average rate levels, the community’s capacity to pay, and the Council’s financial sustainability and current infrastructure backlog”.

MidCoast is one of nine NSW Councils which applied for a rate increase, with IPART approving four applications in full, declining two and partially approving three.

‘Share the Dignity’ Appeal

WINTER, for many of us it’s a time to hunker down warm and cosy in our homes, enjoying the delights of hearty soups and snuggly slippers.

For more than 85,000 Australian women and girls, the reality is very different.

They’re the homeless women, the women living in domestic violence shelters, or living in dire poverty.

For these women even the basic necessities are a luxury.

For over two years now the ‘Share the Dignity’ Charity has been making a difference in these women’s lives and once again, it’s calling for donations of sanitary products to help women in need.

Jodie Genner is the go-towoman for the Organisation in the Myall Area.

Back in April she collected more than 200 sanitary products from generous locals.

“From Tuesday 1 August to the end of the month, people can drop their items into the office at Century 21 on Marine Drive at Tea Gardens and I’ll make sure they get to the Salvation Army Registered drop off point in Raymond Terrace,” Jodie said.

In just two short years, ‘Share the Dignity’ has grown into a national charity which has collected over 650,000 sanitary items from collection points in businesses, schools and other locations all over Australia.

Every item collected is registered, sorted and sent to services that directly support women and girls in need.

Jodie is just one of the 1,000 volunteers working to supply over 2,000 collection points across the country.

August is a very busy month for Jodie.

She’s also running again in Sydney’s City to Surf.

“It’s going to be interesting, I’ve done very little training, I’ve put on a few kilos over winter and I don’t know whether my shirt will even fit me,” she told News Of The Area with a laugh.

Jodie will be raising funds for the Autism Awareness Association.

THERE’S plenty of excitement and anticipation at the North Coast Hawks Nest Beach Holiday Park.

They’ve just been selected as a finalist for the 2017 Hunter Business Awards.

“We’re very excited,” Manager Tracey Moore told News Of The Area.

“The category is for under 20 staff which we fit, we’ve got awesome staff and fantastic service,” Tracey said.

While it’s the first time the Hawks Nest Park has been nominated, Tracey is no stranger to awards.

“It’s the first time for this park, we won the 2007 South Coast Tourism Awards for Best Park under 3 and a half stars and 4 stars, the 2013 Award for South Coast under 4 stars and we also won Best Small Business Operator for the entire South Coast in the same year.”

Open Day Art & Craft

IT will be all hands on deck at the Myall Community Art and Craft Centre this Saturday for the group’s annual Open Day. For months now, the Centre’s hundreds of members have been busy creating beautiful and interesting works of art, both practical and decorative.

“This will be a great opportunity for locals and visitors alike to view the many and varied activities that are on offer at the Centre,” Janette Coppock told News Of The Area.

The group first began over a quarter a century ago in a small makeshift hut.

Now it has over 250 members and a Centre that has been purpose built to

cater to all kinds of creative outlets for both men and women.

“There is sure to be something there to interest everyone,” Janette said.

“Groups include Art, Ceramics, Wood Crafts, Wood Turning, Spinning and Weaving, Lead Lighting, Decorative Art, Patchwork & Quilting, Picture Framing, Leatherwork, Print Making, Soft Crafts and Mosaics.”

The beauty of the Open Day is that visitors to the centre will get a handson experience, seeing and learning what’s involved in the creative process.

“Many new people to our area have called in to visit the Craft Centre shop and have been surprised and amazed at the variety of activities available to members,” Janette said.

Tracey added, “We also have 20 beautiful cabins.”

“I just love all the people coming through the park,” Marissa Schutz said.

“Their first point of contact is us, and we need to make them happy.”

“We just want people to know how beautiful Hawks Nest is.”

The Hawks Nest Beach Holiday Park is one of 13 finalists in their category, the winner to be announced 31 August at a black tie dinner.

“We have a saying, sometimes people come from Sydney and you see the stress, and we say breathe, leave it on the other side of the bridge and it will be there on your way home,” Tracey said. o Phot ery Gall line On

By Margie TIERNEY WITH Federal Parliament in recess at the moment, our local representative, Dr David Gillespie has come up with a new way to reach more of his 111,000 constituents.

The Federal Member for Lyne has set up a mobile office, working on the theory if you can’t go to him, he’ll come to you.

“I go round all over the place, given the electorate is over six thousand square kilometres, it’s hard to get everywhere,” Dr Gillespie recently told News Of The Area.

When he can’t travel, his

“We’re just putting ourselves out there as an information stall,” Brendan said.

“We realise that Taree can be a long way for people to travel to our office,” Brendan told News Of The Area.

Speaking in Tea Gardens, Brendan said, “This is a mobile office so people can come and talk to us about any issues or problems they have in the community.”

“We get lots of enquiries about communications, about council and roads.”

Brendan also had some good news for Tea Gardens’

ageing population.

“A lot of elderly people are very happy that we’ve reinstated the pensioner concession card.”

“That will be coming through on 9 October,’’ Brendan said.

The information stall also has some practical handouts.

“We give out pensioner guides, taxation return kits, major care kits,” Brendan said.

The Nationals mobile office will be back at the Myall Quays Shopping Centre this Wednesday.

The team and committee would like to wish the Captain of the Roos Sam Croese a very big Happy Birthday for Sunday.

The Roos kicked off and the Cobras were the first to put points on the board in the first 4mins. 6/0.

Then Harley Ridgeway was over for the Roos with Sam Croese converting to equal the score 10mins in 6 all.

Claro were over for 2 more quick tries 15mins in to take the score to 16/6.

By The JAFFA 19 July Well at least it wasn’t wet!

In contrast to the beautiful spring day that the lady bowlers enjoyed on the previous day, Wednesday was bleak, cold and very windy.

A field of 44 players took to the green for the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples competition.

Two outstanding sides competed for the prize money with the combination of Ken Devlin, Col Amos and Mark Hair just edging out the team of Ross Barry, Peter Gurney and Greg Pearson to fill the winning places.

The rest of us will just have to get better!

21 July The freezing conditions spilled over into Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs today with another great complement of players.

All rinks were full.

In a game of bowls most teams try to win by the largest margin possible however, not today.

To determine the winners for the day the lowest margin was selected discreetly, prior to commencement of play, and was used to determine the first place.

Barry Goode and Max Stephens just scraped over the line by 4 shots to win the day with Jean Glover and Keith Smith filling second.

Interestingly, the games played on Rink 3 and 4 were both very close contests.

Wilma Drake, Kathie Rimmer and Carol Hayden 19 v Ingrid Luck, Pam Gilchrist and Dale Winter 18.

Carol’s team had a lead of ten shots on the sixth end.

Dale’s team managed to win the next four ends narrowing the lead to two shots at the end of the 10th.

Then as “luck would have it” or perhaps with some great bowling, Carol’s team scored 7 shots on the next two ends.

This gave them a nine point lead but Dale’s team didn’t give up scoring 9 shots over the next 6 ends compared to the other teams 1 shot.

But this 1 shot gave them the game. Well played both teams.

I guess the cold weather kept a lot of our members indoors on Thursday 20 July.

Only six bowlers turned up for a game, great to see one of these bowlers was Anne Mackenzie.

Anne has been away from bowls for awhile.

Due to lack of numbers we had a “roll up”.

Well done to our two teams that entered the Newcastle District Triples Competition.

Karen Green, Maynie Roberts and Kayelene Pearson bowled at Cardiff on Tuesday this team progressed to Round 2 where they unfortunately were narrowly defeated by a Raymond Terrace team 18 v 21.

Our other team consisting of Vicki Rankin, Lynne Green and Lorraine Harvey played at Soldiers Point.

Having a win and a bye they have now progressed to Round 3 in the competition.

The team will next be in action at Raymond Terrace on Monday 24 July, a win here will secure them a place in the semi-finals. It’s good to see our teams competing in District events and achieving great results against some very formable bowlers.
