THE Bulahdelah Show has been officially axed this year due to COVID-19.

It falls each year on the second weekend in November, and offers demolition derbies, fireworks, chainsaw racing, dog and pet shows, wood shopping, cattle judging and much more.

It ranks in the top ten shows across the state.

The Bulahdelah Show recently posted to their Facebook page, “Unfortunately the committee has had to make the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Bulahdelah show.”

“The committee will now focus on bringing you a bigger and better show in 2021.”

The Bulahdelah Show was last suspended during the 1970s, but in 1983, the society was reformed and has been organising the annual show ever since.

The society also recently received a Government Stronger Communities grant this year of $6,000, which was used to purchase a custom-made trailer to help with moving temporary fencing around the showground, used during the Bulahdelah Show, Campdraft and emergency situations.

New insights on whales

EAST Australian humpback whales complete, on average, an 8000-kilometre round trip between Antarctica and Queensland from May to November each year, fasting for most of their journey.

Lead author and researcher, Dr Catharina Vendl, was part of a team of UNSW researchers who studied the changes to these whales’ airway bacteria, which showed the physiological challenges they experience during migration, and indicated a possible compromised state of health.

“Our findings are the first to provide good evidence of a connection between the whales’ airway bacterial communities, their physiology and immune function – something that has been established in humans,” said Dr Vendl.

“In general, we assume that this shift in microbiota is a naturally occurring phenomenon caused by the whales’ annual migration.”

“Studies have shown that whales accumulate large volumes of environmental pollutants in their stored fat layers/ blubber.”

“When they live off their blubber during migration these pollutants are released into the body and can have a negative effect on the immune system of the whales,” she said.

In addition to reducing marine pollution, Dr Vendl said that it’s important to minimise potentially stressful impact on the whales, which includes following the legal guidelines for boats to keep a safe distance from the whales.

“The whales do recover when they return to their feeding grounds in Antarctica,” she said.

“However, the increase in marine pollutants and other anthropogenic stressors are a more recent phenomenon adding to the whales’ compromised immune system.”

“Humpback whales do not only play an essential role in their marine ecosystem but also represent an important economic resource, because whale watching is a booming industry in many Australian cities and around the world.”

52 Hectares Of Koala Habitat Under Threat

IN times when we have lost an unprecedented number of native wildlife and habitat, a proposed development at Brandy Hill is set to see a further 52 hectares of koala habitat destroyed.

There is no doubt that the species is under threat.

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington, told News Of The Area, “The final tick rests with Sussan Ley MP, the Federal Minister for the Environment.”

Washington is urging everyone to call on the Minister “to do the job and knock back the project.”

The deadline for submissions is 8 September.

The Nature Conservation Councils Executive Chris Gambian said, “Koalas are on track to be extinct in NSW by 2050.”

“There were once hundreds of thousands of koalas in NSW - possibly millions - but now there are fewer than 30,000 in the wild.

“The NSW koala inquiry report makes it clear that the key to saving koalas is protecting their habitat.

“We have to stop logging koala trees and start creating more dedicated koala reserves.

“We must also protect forest corridors which link populations and enable healthy koalas to reoccupy areas where there have

been local extinctions, such as around Port Macquarie after the fires.

“Koala numbers have plunged under these laws so they are clearly not working,” he said.

Koalas are an umbrella species, these are species that when preserved, indirectly protect many other plant and animal species.

The protection of Australia’s threatened

species could be improved by a factor of seven, if more efficient ‘umbrella’ species were prioritised for protection, according to research conducted by the University of Queensland.

“The Australian Federal Government’s umbrella prioritisation list identifies 73 species as conservation priorities,” said UQ PhD candidate Michelle Ward.

“This figure could be increased to benefit nearly half of all threatened terrestrial species for the same budget.

“The koala, red goshawk, matted flaxlily and purple clover are more efficient umbrella species, yet none of these appear on the existing federal government priority species list.”

A recent decision of the NSW Supreme involving the hacking of a real estate agents email, serves as a timely reminder of the need to remain vigilant against cyber fraud (Deligiannidou v Sundarjee).

In this case, a real estate agent sent email correspondence to the purchaser of a property directing them to pay the deposit by EFT into the real estate agent’s trust account.

A few days later, the purchaser received an email purporting to be from the real estate agent with an attached invoice and payment details, requesting that the purchaser pay the deposit as soon as possible. This was in fact a fraudulent email and the account details provided were for a fraudulent account, not the real estate agent’s trust account.

The purchaser paid the balance deposit into the fraudulent account.

The purchaser provided a screenshot of the payment to the real estate agent who also failed to notice that the funds were paid into the incorrect account.

The vendors (who had had no direct dealings with the purchasers) subsequently served a notice of termination of the Contract on the basis that the balance deposit had not been received by either the sellers or the real estate agent.

The Court held that the agent did not have authority to authorise the payment to be made by EFT as the contract specifically provided that the deposit was to be paid by cash or cheque. Accordingly as the buyer had paid the deposit by an incorrect means they were in breach of the contract and the seller was entitled to terminate the contract.

Bitou Busters: Volunteers Clearing Jimmys Beach From Weed Infestations

Fourth Charged after Hawks Nest Home Invasion

A FOURTH person has now been charged over an alleged home invasion at Hawks Nest in June.

At about 10.30pm on Monday 30 June 2020, a 78-year-old man opened the door of his home on Booner Street to three men, before he was allegedly assaulted and stabbed in the abdomen.

The group then made their way upstairs and allegedly assaulted a 53-year-old man before stabbing him in the back and neck.

The injured men were taken to hospital where they were admitted, treated and have since been released.

Two men – aged 22 and 46 – and a 30-year-old woman have been charged in relation to the incident; they remain before the courts.

Following further inquiries by Port Stephens-Hunter Police District officers, a 30-year-old man was arrested at The Entrance Police Station on Monday 24 August.

He was taken to Wyong Police Station and charged with two counts of special aggravated enter dwelling with intent to wound.

He was refused bail to appear at Wyong Local Court Tuesday 25 August 2020.

THE prolific yellow flowers of the Bitou Bush, the Asparagus weeds (both from South Africa), as well as the distinctive red Mother of Millions succulent (from Madagascar), are all terrible weeds continuously invading our coastal dunes and forests.

Quick to seed and fast growing, they replace native plants and destroy the habitat of native animals.

Many threatened species and plant communities have been adversely affected.

Back are the Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens Bitou Busters, a group of 20 plus volunteers committed to removing these weeds infesting Jimmys Beach and Hawks Nest.

On Saturday 22 August, they braved the cold and windy conditions along the sand dunes continuing their project to eliminate these weeds, a hard task including sawing, digging out roots and pruning.

The coordinator of

the Bitou Busters, Jill Madden, was happy with the progress, stating, “We systematically and carefully remove seeds and roots.

Where possible we leave safe and dead weeds to mulch the ground. The Bitou Busters have been committed to improving the natural habitat since 2010 and it has had a positive impact on our coastal environment. The working sessions will continue each month until all the weeds are eradicated.”

New local volunteers, Mia and Mike Thew, were happy with the work stating, “We cut the bitou above the sand level and apply poison onto the stems, so the roots die but hold the sand in place.

There are lots of weeds, so the more volunteers the better. It all helps our coastal environment.”

Craft group coordinator Meredyth Rae, said the

group has only been operating for a couple months but has already accomplished so much.

“We normally all bring whatever we’re individually working on and spend the time chatting and laughing,” said Ms Rae. “One of our members,

Francene Barden, was actually the instigator of the mask making.”

“She was concerned that there may be people in our local community who may not be able to access masks because of finances or isolation,” she said.

Ms Barden brought five

sample masks from different patterns to the next meetup for group members to choose from.

“Once we had our sample, we all brought needed supplies from home,” Ms Rae continued.

“Fabric, elastic, sewing machines, and whatever else was required, and worked for about six hours,” she said.

The group was able to produce more than 80 masks in one sitting, and have provided some to RTC, Anglican Op Shop and local newsagent to distribute free of charge to those who ask.

“We’re not, at this stage, planning on making more masks, but will be guided by the needs of our community,” said Ms Rae. “We all really enjoyed our day working on a project together and may consider another community project down the track.”

“In the meantime, we get to pull out those half-made projects from the back of the cupboard at home and dedicate some time to finally completing them,” she said.

Crash In Karuah A WOMAN was left in a critical condition following a single vehicle crash in the Hunter last week.

Emergency services were called to The Bucketts Way at Limeburners Creek, approximately 20km northeast of Karuah, about 5.30pm on Tuesday 18 August 2020.

It’s understood a Hyundai ix35 was travelling west when the vehicle lost control and rolled several times before crashing through a fence and impacting a tree.

The driver and sole occupant – a 51-year-old woman – was trapped in the vehicle for a short period of time before passing motorists stopped to render assistance.

The woman was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

As police conduct inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash, officers are asking any witnesses to come forward.

It’s springtime: nourish to flourish

MIDCOAST Libraries have launched the Nourish to Flourish Festival as we head into spring, with free and fun livestreamed events to prepare homes and help out our environment for the warmer months.

“The Nourish to Flourish Festival aims to inspire us all to make small steps towards living more sustainably – starting in our own home garden and kitchen,” said Council’s Manager of Libraries, Chris Jones.

The free online events provide fun and interesting ways to make easy and small tweaks to our lives that together can have big benefits for personal health and our environment.

Director of Garden to Table Permaculture, Megan Cooke will lead the Garden to Table workshops – with the first one, focussing on

preparation of your spring garden, on Saturday 29 August from 11am.

Megan will show you how to prepare for and plant your spring garden, with tips to reduce household waste through worm farms, composting and chickens.

It doesn’t matter if you have a balcony garden, a suburban block or acres, there’s something everyone can do on their sustainable journey.

Lydia Irving from Internal Instinct will lead a demonstration on how to make your own sourdough on Thursday 3 September from 6pm. Lydia will teach you how to make a starter from scratch and how to keep it alive, followed by the kneading process, theory of the fermentation process and finally the baking.

Myall Coast Little Athletics Club to close MYALL Coast Little Athletics Centre has been a staple in Hawks Nest and the wider Myall Coast community for more than 10 years.

It has operated on a nonprofit basis and is entirely run by volunteers, most of whom have their own children competing.

The centre has recently announced that its upcoming 2020-21 season will be cancelled due to the lack of interest in forming a committee.

Melisa Brown, Acting Secretary, Myall Coast Little Athletics Centre, said, “We have had many parents, committee and athletes come and go over the years.”

Last week was National Science Week inspiring locals to think and engage with science.

How? Well, cut to Dr Neil Jordan who is currently bush bashing in the Myall Lakes National Park, with his team from the Centre for Ecosystem Science, the University of NSW, Taronga Zoo and National Parks.

Geared up with cameras, sound recorders and GPS collars, his team are tracking dingos to work out how they communicate and how they own territory (their scent and sound). Locals can help by reporting dingo sightings to Dr Jordan’s Carnivore and Coexistence

To celebrate the (pending) warmer weather, MidCoast Libraries have launched the Nourish to Flourish Festival, featuring free and fun live streamed events to prepare homes and help out our environment for spring.

Also on the agenda is a report card on their Delivery Program and Operational Plan (July 2019-June 2020) with lots of projects on track but improvements needed in waste water management and regional business development.

Council will be busy with their spring capital works program, which includes road improvements for Ogden St, Tea Gardens (upgrading school parking) and at Coorilla Street, Hawks Nest.

Road upgrades will also be progressing for the townships along the Bucketts Way corridor out to Stroud.

On the crime front, this week locals reported a number of vandalism and property crimes online.

At the Tea Gardens Puma petrol station, the car wash is out of action due to the metal cash boxes being stolen.

Vandalism and rubbish dumping also remain ongoing problems in local parks.

Research shows that communities are much safer when locals care for and protect public spaces as well as their homes.

No matter how many times even small incidents happen, speak up. Everyone can safely photograph and/or report issues to the local Police, Council, Environmental Protection Authority or to relevant support services for help.

Dying to Know Day delivered differently Each August MidCoast Council’s Cemeteries and Memorials team partners with a range of local professionals to bring ‘Dying to Know Day’ events to the region.

THIS annual National campaign encourages important conversations about end-of-life planning and breaks down the stigma attached to talking about death with the people we love.

Previously Council has hosted a range of events for community members to attend, where they can discuss their options with different representatives from the funeral and memorial industries as well as other community organisations, however COVID-19 has changed the way this important initiative is being delivered this year.

For the first time, Dying to Know Day is being ‘home delivered’ with Council and its partners creating an informative video that is available to view online, as well as information and

resource packages to take home.

“Every day my team and I have conversations with community members of all ages about dying and it’s so important to provide a platform that will help normalise the topic for people to openly talk to their family and friends,” said Kimm Christie, MidCoast Council’s Team Leader of Cemeteries.

“We know dying is inevitable, so equipping ourselves with all the information, understanding what our options are, and letting others know our values and wishes, means we can plan ahead and reduce stress on our loved ones when the time comes.”

With the assistance of partnering grief counsellors, funeral directors, healthcare providers, and celebrants, Council’s Dying to Know

Day video provides advice, information and guidance.

Frew Trophy proves as a popular local sports event

for the R&D Frew trophy which occurred over two consecutive weeks. This event is played in pairs and

We are very appreciative of Daphne and Richard Frew’s sponsorship which commenced in 2004.

The 2020 competition was the last time they will be sponsoring the event as they will soon be leaving Tea Gardens and moving north.

Daphne joined us on the last day of the event to present the trophy to Deb Matheson and Fran Henderson who were the 2020 winners.

It was great to have Daphne there to thank her, not only for their sponsorship, but for her help and commitment to the Hawks Nest Golf Club over a number of years.

16 August The Annual General Meeting was held today with a good turnout of members.

It was pleasing to note that the success of the Club over the past year and through the Covid crisis was reflected in the participation of members in the management of the Club.

There were a few resignations, but the Club had no difficulty in filling all vacancies and ballots were not required to determine positions.

Club President, Noel Jackson was elected unopposed for another term and he paid tribute to the work of his committee over the past year.

The retiring Treasurer, John Yabsley, outlined the solid financial position that

Club had achieved but warned that the expected fall-off in activity may impact the Club’s finances next year.

The following positions were elected unopposed.

Vice Presidents, Ross Barry and Frank Dunn.

Treasurer, Greg Smith.

Secretary, Gary Wynne.

Games Secretary, Rob Young and assistant Games Secretary, Dave Perry.

The Committee comprised Jeff Baker, Leigh Hunt, Peter Campbell and Graham Reynolds.

The all-important Selectors included the talents of Danny Johnson, Jeff Baker, Leigh Hunt and Greg Pearson.

The Coaches and Umpires coordinator was Daryl Martin.

19 August Another day of wild and windy weather but that did

not deter the 48 players competing in the popular Wednesday Nominated Triples competition.

The numbers included Ron Drake making a welcome come back.

It is nice to see our numbers returning to some semblance of normalcy in these difficult times.

The winners today were decided on the afternoon games and unfortunately, I must report that the usual suspects were found guilty again.

Winning on the grass with 13 points was the team of Peter Gurney, Ross Barry and Danny Johnson and on the synthetic with 12 points, on a countback, was Lance Atkins, Ron Green and Greg Pearson.

21 August Their numbers may be small but those who attended Friday bowls today had a great time.

For those keen to sneak in another game of competitive bowls in great company, the

‘Spider’ lobsters around Broughton Island

UP until the 1970s giant lobsters to 10kg crawled unchallenged over the reefs around Broughton Island.

Known as “spiders” by the commercial fishermen the monster crustaceans were considered a nuisance as they jammed the entrances to their lobster traps preventing their smaller cousins from entering.

The “spiders” had a limited value on the market as they were considered too big and too tough.

Today a small population of the giants remain in hidden pockets of habitat.

Mask wearing to reduce risk

DEAR NOTA,

I UNDERSTAND that some people do not like wearing masks.

However, since the beginning of the pandemic, masks have been worn in hospitals and by all frontline workers.

We live in Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest which are communities of aged people and these towns are also holiday destinations.

There are many vunerable people here who find wearing a mask so important as they have health issues and they are very frightened.

So I find it puzzling that Coles staff have not been ordered by management to wear a mask as a duty of care to their customers.

It would be of course in everybody's interest if it was mandatory for anyone entering the store to wear a mask.

Masks: the answer to bare-faced inaction DEAR NOTA, I MUST be the odd one out, for I’ve been pulling on a mask for a few months — at a time when they were rarely seen in use, even in populous spots and confined spaces.

It was sometime in May that my UK friend and I both condemned the practice of governments and health gurus for NOT encouraging us all, wherever we may be, to grab a mask.

We raised our voices in agreement over the phone at how ludicrous was this inaction.

Wearing a mask for some protection, was surely a case of the obvious.

We pointed the finger at those quirky leaders Donald Trump and Boris Johnson who were creating headlines by decrying

But just prior to it, I would have been the sole wearer of a mask in Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest supermarkets, and similarly in Raymond Terrace’s shopping mall — couldn’t spot a mask for looking.

I didn’t get to Nelson Bay, but I suspect I would have experienced much the same there.

I noted also that unlike me, most elderly local shoppers had refrained from applying a facial cover-up.

Irresponsible? I thought so, for masks

This would of course force everyone to shop elsewhere, so why are we all taking this risk.

Surely, if you create a barrier, there could be a benefit, to you and those close to you, in both senses.

This commentary isn’t part of a blame game, but I feel it’s incumbent on us all that we take the wearing of masks seriously, as well as keeping one’s distance, of

Dear Petra, THE art of reading body language is an important skill. You can often tell more about what a person is saying by the way their body is positioned or the way their eyes light up than you can by their words. Hand movements are integral to this analysis, as you've discovered. Unfortunately, Cecilia (I'm going to call her Cecilia because when I hear that name, I picture someone who wildly gesticulates at dinner parties) has taken this to a whole new level and you now have odd numbers of hollow-stemmed champagne glasses, red wine goblets and shot glasses as well as pinot noir and port stains all over your white linen tablecloths.

Cecilia may be anxious. Her hands may be darting around because she is so full of nervous tension it is flying out of her fingers like a superpower.

May I suggest that you wait until the weather warms up a bit and start having outdoor barbecues. It would then be perfectly acceptable to position Cecilia next to the esky full of Bundy Rum cans floating around in icy water and she can simply help herself. If she still manages to spill her drink, it's only going to go on the lawn or all over her outfit and there will be no breakages. You'll also be able to take the used cans to be recycled (make sure Cecilia and her nervous little hands don't crush them or she'll render them useless and the machine will spit them back out at you).

If you do this often enough, one of two things will happen. Your friend will have found himself a new girlfriend because Cecilia hates Bundy Rum and/or her frantic hand gestures made him jumpy, or you will have earned enough recycling money to purchase some new wine glasses.
