Ride for Cancer

By Daniel SAHYOUN BRAD Morante and his daughter Madisson are taking cycling to new heights this month to raise funds to help fight kids’ cancer.

“Both Madisson and I have struggled with the loss of my father to pancreatic cancer.

“I cannot imagine the pain, confusion and heartbreak a family must go through when a child is forced to battle this horrible disease,” Brad said.

Over 600 Australian children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, three children die every week.

The funds raised during the Great Cycle Challenge will help the Children’s Medical Research Institute find a cure.

Brad and Madisson have set themselves a large fundraising target and aim to pedal 150 kilometres around Hawks Nest by the end of October.

“My father was a staunch supporter of kids’ cancer appeals,” Brad said.

“We both thought the cycle challenge would be a way in which we could honour his memory whilst

Brad and Madisson have raised over $4000 so far thanks to the support of their family and friends in the local community.

The Great Cycle Challenge started in 2013 and has grown to become one of the biggest cycling events in Australia.

More than 11,000 riders are taking part this year, with the common vision of a world without cancer,

where all kids are living life, not fighting for it.

“I am very proud to have raised Madisson in such a way that she understands the importance of having a go to help causes such as the Great Cycle Challenge,” Brad said.

entertainment on the foreshore and don’t forget the ‘Buy My Wardrobe’ fundraiser in the Dolphin Room of the Tea Gardens Hotel.

There’ll be dozens of stalls including volunteers from Boomerang Bags. ‘’We will be hosting a kids’ colouring in table where for a gold coin donation young people are able to colour and paint on their own ‘kids sized’ Boomerang Bag to take home,” Brooke Feltis said.

There is also plenty happening with the Myall Koala & Environment Group (MKEG). Ian Morphett told News Of The Area, “It is hard to believe but this is the eleventh year that the Koala Group has been giving away free koala food trees at the Myall River Festival.”

“This year we have been able to obtain some absolutely beautiful Dwarf Parramatta Red Gums in larger tubes than previous years.”

As well as these trees the MKEG will also have about 200 native plants to give away.

As the sun sets the lantern parade will begin.

The festival will come to a close with a gigantic fireworks display on the river just after 8 o’clock.

David, who grew up in Bulahdelah, is now based in Texas and sits at an impressive number 37 in the world professional bull riding rankings.

David said he began competing in bull rides at the age of 15, inspired by his two uncles, Maurice and Matthew Bogie.

“I originally got into the sport because it was a thing that we used to do with the family, especially my uncles,” he said.

“I really enjoyed it then and I still do.”

The 29-year-old, who has won numerous championships during his professional career, said he was delighted to have inspired Frankie.

“It is great to see someone who wants to give the sport a go and enjoys it as much as I do,” David said.

CHRISTMAS is still two months away but the members of the Myall Community Arts and Craft Centre are already collecting gifts to donate to the Salvation Army.

“The Centre does this every year,” Janette Coppock told News Of The Area.

“Last year’s [donation drive] was a great success and we are hoping this year will be no different.”

While many of the members donate to the appeal, the centre is calling on the wider

community of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest to leave a gift under the tree.

“There is a small Christmas tree set up just inside the door of the centre where gifts can be left,” Janette said.

“Gifts for all ages would be welcome.”

“Mums and Dads deserve a treat as well as the children.”

And there’s no need to wrap the gifts.

“We need to know the suitable age group before we wrap them.” ‘’If you can, donations of wrapping paper would also be welcome.’’

Although climbing onto a 700-kilogram bull does not appeal to everyone, Frankie told News Of The

Area he “won’t be scared”.

“I think it will be exciting and lots of fun,” he said.

“Bull riders are very talented, they need good balance and it takes lots of practice to stay on.”

David is currently home visiting family and will be returning to America in December.

Munro v Wilmar Australia Pty Ltd [2017] FWC 2493 is a recent decision of the Fair Work Commission (“FWC”) which provides guidance to employees and employers about what an employee is permitted to do while taking a period of paid carers leave.

Specifically, the FWC considered whether an employee would be permitted to work in their own business during a period of paid carer’s leave taken in the employee’s primary employment to care for a family member.

The FWC considered that the nature of carer’s leave is different to sick leave where it is the worker who is incapacitated from performing duties. The

FWC held that an employee on carers leave is able to work in another role, so long as the work occurs outside of ordinary working hours. The FWC found that this is no different from a worker seeking paid carer’s leave to care for their ill child during the day when the worker is ordinarily at work, and upon the other parent returning home from work to care for the child, the worker running errands, playing sport or even working a second job. Where these other activities occur outside ordinary hours of work, and there is adequate care for the ill family member, this should be of no concern to the worker’s employer.

Price hike cuts hard

WITH the skyrocketing cost of electricity, homeowners and businesses are feeling the squeeze.

According to the ACCC, the average annual household electricity bill has risen by around $500 in NSW and businesses have been slugged with an increase of more than 52 percent over the past 10 years.

Louise Barry from Barry Bros Butchery in Bulahdelah said like most small business operators, they are doing what they can to absorb the hit.

“The price rise affects us a lot, so we have had to make adjustments,” she said.

“We used a company that assessed our electricity usage, they found us a better deal and we ended up changing providers.”

Louise said they have also instituted energy saving procedures including using off-peak power for the cool rooms to help keep costs down.

“With the savings, we have not had to pass the extra costs onto our customers,” she said.

Butcher Josh Dallas said other procedures in place include adopting

energy-efficient work practices.

A recent report from the ACCC found the national electricity market has created “serious affordability problems” that are “putting businesses and consumers under unacceptable pressure”.

“Consumers have been faced with increasing pressures to their household budgets as electricity prices have skyrocketed in recent years,” ACCC Chairman Rod Sims said.

“Residential prices have increased by 63 percent on top of inflation since 2007-08.”

Mr Sims said the main issue fueling the price hikes was “the significant increase in network costs for all states other than South Australia.”

“We estimate that higher wholesale costs during 2016-17 contributed to a $167 increase in bills,” he said.

The ACCC will now focus on making recommendations that will improve electricity affordability across the National Electricity Market.

In the meantime, Louise said they are doing everything they can to maintain profitability without needing to pass the rising costs on.

HSC Underway

By Daniel SAHYOUN MYALL Coast Higher School Certificate students breathed a collective sigh of relief after completing their first HSC exams last week.

The exams kicked off with English Paper 1, with around 40 students from Bulahdelah

Central School amongst the 60,000 across NSW sitting the exam.

Year 11 student Katie Nolan, who sat the two-hour paper alongside Year 12, said she was excited to finally start the exams after months of preparation.

“At first, I was worried that

I wouldn’t be as good as the Year 12s, but we were all on the same page and all worked really hard,” she said.

“Everyone was nervous in the trial exams, but for the actual HSC we knew what to expect and everyone was very supportive.”

THE employment landscape has changed dramatically over time and it can come as quite a shock to realise the hoops you have to jump through to be accepted into various organisations, be they private or public.

I think we can all remember the first job we ever applied for, and how easy the application process was in the good old days.

My first job was as a waitress in a Chinese restaurant.

I had been to the beach and was walking home (sarong, bare feet) when I saw a sign that said, ‘Waitress wanted.’

I opened the door and noticed a man in the corner, who was sound asleep. He had formed a bed out of three dining chairs. I woke him up (brave or stupid) and said I was interested in the job.

He asked me two questions: 1. Can you work Saturday nights? “Yes.” 2. Do you own shoes? “Yes.” I started that weekend.

Let’s fast forward several (many) years.

Now, in order to prove your worth there is a multi-step application process.

First you need to write an application that gives detailed responses to 16 selection criteria.

Your resumé has to be rewritten for each new role, as though you are a bespoke coat that has to be redesigned with each new position.

Next comes the testing process: there’s cognitive tests to ensure you know which shape comes next in a pattern, then psychological tests to prove you have a personality that is nothing like our current political leaders.

This is before the face-to-face interview that involves role plays, written responses to scenarios and team building exercises with the other applicants in a tactic reminiscent of The Hunger Games.

After all of that, if you finally get the job, you’ll be wanting to take your first sick day due to physical and mental exhaustion.

WHO could forget the spectacle of the bulk carrier, ‘Pasha Bulker’ ran aground on Nobby’s Beach, Newcastle in June 2007?

The east coast low that drove the 76,741-tonne bulk carrier was the focus of the Myall U3A presentation, “Storms: Majesty and Terror” last Friday, 13 October at the Hawks Nest Old Library.

Guest speaker, Prof.

Howard Bridgman, is conjoint Professor at the School of Environmental and

Life Sciences, University of Newcastle.

“Storms come in many sizes, shapes and scales,” he said.

“They can be absolutely spectacular and utterly frightening at the same time.”

With the aid of stunning photographs, Prof. Bridgman held the audience’s undivided attention with a discussion of how storms develop from the initial to mature stages to dissipation.

Walking for 30 years

By Margie TIERNEY THEY call themselves the ‘Thursday Walkers’ and this month the group celebrated its 30th anniversary.

As you’d expect they marked the occasion with a walk at Tahlee.

“Forty-two walkers participated in the day at Tahlee, with most walking up and around Prayer Mountains on the grounds of the Tahlee Ministries,” Cherry Hughes told News Of The Area.

The group has come a long way in three decades.

“The original group of five walkers has become 100, though of course not that many turn up each week,” Cherry said.

The original group, going by the name of “Walking for Pleasure” was a Department of Health initiative started in 1987 to encourage people aged over 50 to get some regular exercise.

“Di Vercoe, Pat Pritchard, Shirley Andrews and Helen Macguire, who came to Tahlee last week, were some of the

original members to walk under the Thursday Walkers banner in 1991,” Cherry said.

“Helen led us up the steep tracks of the mountain; what else could we do but follow.”

The walkers range in age from 50 something to 80 something and new members are always welcome.

When a storm is accompanied by lighting that heats the air, a big bang (thunder) occurs, hence a thunderstorm.

Severe storms bring hail (the largest on record was a 1.02kg in Bangladesh), squall lines ahead of a cold front (such as the Sydney 21Jan 1991 storm) or tornadoes, the most severe thunderstorm.

It took 24 days before the “Pasha Bulker” was towed back to sea.

Though the spectacle of the beached 76,741 tonne bulk carrier in central Newcastle brought much-needed tourism and economic boom to the city, Prof. Bridgman emphasised the importance of heeding storm warnings, the failure of which have resulted in massive losses or damage to property and lives (i.e. the Sydney-Hobart race in 1998).

The recent succession of tornadoes in the American southeast coast are of great interest and concern and will be discussed early next year.

Need for Speed

WHETHER it be on the footie field or the race track, local Clarissa Mitchell has a need for speed.

Clarissa and her brother Stephen Saunders are preparing to head across ‘The ditch’ to race in the ‘Xtreme Karts Speedway Showdown’ in Christchurch next month.

“Are we excited? You bet your damned life we are,” Clarissa exclaimed.

The brother and sister inherited their love of speedcar racing from their dad. “ I first started as a passenger with my father at

the tender age of 16,” Clarissa told News Of The Area.

“I’ve had the racing bug since I was small being constantly surrounded with racing activities, as dad got into it first.”

“It then turned into a family event with Dad as pit crew and Mum came along to look after all the kids.”

It was the start of a lifelong love affair with the sport, both brother and sister riding and racing since their teens.

The pair also work at the Hawks Nest Golf Club.

For those into the mechanics of their ride, it’s a Speedway Sidecar FZR 1045

CC Yamaha which runs on Methanol fuel and has no brakes.

The engine was built by nine-times Australian Champion Darrin Treloar.

“With our 2017 Aussie series completed, our full focus now turns to the ‘Xtreme Karts Showdown Across The Ditch Tour of New Zealand’ that will fire into life when the Aussies line up next to the Kiwis in the opening test match at Moore Park Speedway, Christchurch on 17 November,” Clarissa said.

It’s been a hectic few months for Keira on the athletics track and there’s still more competition to come before the end of the year.

The young student from Medowie Christian School competed in the Christian School Sports Association State Championships in August, winning three events she entered the 100 metre, 200 metre and long jump.

She was also named ‘Overall Athlete of the Meet’ for her performance.

Then it was off to State Championships in September and again she won all three events.

“Following her performances at State PSSA she has been selected in the NSW Athletics team to compete in the Pacific Schools Games in Adelaide in December this year in the 100m, long jump and 4x100m relay, where there will be athletes from over 15 countries,” John said.

“All selected athletes need to raise funds to enable them to personally get to Adelaide, and Keira is looking for support by selling the official Education Department raffle tickets.”

Although our Clubhouse in Yamba Street will be used primarily for Bridge activities it is anticipated that it will be utilised by other like-minded groups who have been showing an interest in this wonderful venue.

This building has been a long-term dream and only made possible through the generosity and hard work of club members, and with other fundraising assistance from the community, Australian Bridge Federation (ABF) and Federal, State and Local Governments.

ON Friday 13 October, members of Hawks Nest Bridge Club (HNBC) made welcome Dr Gillespie during the first round of our Club Championships, where it was announced that the HNBC was a successful applicant under the Federal Government’s Assistance Programme for Stronger Communities.

An amount of $5,000 will be matched by the HNBC and used to assist in fitting out the new clubhouse which is currently under construction in Yamba St, Hawks Nest.

Dr Gillespie stressed the importance of keeping one’s brain active in later years and acknowledged that playing card games, such as Bridge or learning a language or to play a musical instrument, helped

delay the onset of dementia.

In this regard, the grant money will deliver social benefits to our community.

After speaking briefly with the members and sharing cake to celebrate Shirley Pearson’s birthday, the club president, Glenn Conroy accompanied Dr Gillespie to the building site, where the builder, Peter Worth kindly allowed access and provided commentary on the construction.

Dr Gillespie was very impressed with the longarched roof span and openness of the building.

Anyone watching the progress of our clubhouse will see, it has now reached lockup stage and interior works, well underway.

Vets and Bowlers Share Last Hurrah

MEMBERS of the Karuah RSL Sub Branch and Bowling Club shared their bowling green’s last hurrah last weekend before it was pulled up for its annual refurbishment. Both Clubs took the opportunity to play and socialise in the last event of the 2018 bowling season on a beautiful Karuah summer Sunday. In the end, the bowlers came out just in front, as you would expect, but the game and day left all involved feeling like winners.

By The JAFFA 18 OCTOBER: day we had 37 bowlers competing for the Wednesday Nominated Triples competition with all play on the artificial synthetic green.

In a closely fought out day 5 teams won both their games but the overall winners on 58 points were; Barry Goode, Bill Thrift and Keith Smith.

A number of players are still away which has affected the numbers but should be back in the next week.

21 October: The Men’s Bowling Club added its support to the Start for Life Foundation today when 34 players competed in the annual “Kneelers” V “Grippers event.

The Club does this every year with the aim to raise at least $2,000.00 to assist local disadvantaged children beyond just educational essentials, encompassing all aspects of a well-rounded education,
